Getting Here
Inishowen Tourism has produced this information guide to enhance the experience of “what to see and do” when you visit The Peninsula. We have two information touch points one based in Buncrana and the other in Carndonagh. The Visitor Services Team, Sally Toland with Heidi Woods in Buncrana and Nan Crampsie in Carndonagh are dedicated to pass on their factual expertise of the area highlighting iconic attractions of scale, cultural and historical locations, niche and special interest activities to suit your needs. We do recommend that you take time to call in with us at the Tourist Offices to collect your comprehensive guide, avail of additional information, and meet our team to say “hello”. One of the key themes of the current strategy for Tourism Ireland/ Failte Ireland is to develop The “Wild Atlantic Way” launched in March 2014, and the brand associated with a world class coastal tourism route that we are part of. We host Signature Point One of the route starting at Malin Head (Ireland’s Most Northerly Point). This is perhaps the most unspoilt and less talked about region in terms of tourism in the past, but that is all about to change. The big news that Star Wars Episode VIII is being filmed at Malin Head this Spring has drawn phenomenal interest in Malin Head and the Peninsula as a place to visit. As we welcome the film crew to Inishowen we dedicate our cover page to the spectacular natural images that have gone viral that bode well with “May the Force be with you” as our skies light up in a special unique display (courtesy of a local photographer Ronan McLaughlin). Be part of this exciting journey from the start, capture the wave of enthusiasm and join the avid explorer to choose Inishowen for a holiday, make it your own! “My Inishowen”.

T H E W I L D AT L A N T I C WAY To really experience Ireland you need to feel it – the land, the rain, the bursting rays of sunlight that change in a heartbeat, but most of all, its ability to permeate the core of your entire being. This is a country that cannot be rushed, and exploring it with a combination of driving, walking, cycling, and climbing is one of the best ways to experience it. This allows you the opportunity to meet the locals, unfold thousands of years of history and understand what makes Irish people so unique. Choosing the Inishowen Peninsula as the starting point in the Northwest, the journey of a lifetime begins. The Wild Atlantic Way is Ireland’s first long-distance driving route and one of the longest in the world. Stretching from the Inishowen Peninsula in Donegal to Kinsale in County Cork, the route offers an open road to truly discover the West Coast. It stretches down the Western Seaboard
approximately 2500km,and boasts 15 Iconic signature points and spectacular places of interest, with a further 160 discovery points to engrave memories you will never forget. 150 Hidden Gems where the locals frequent lie off the beaten track and can be shared with visitors to get a true Irish experience. Donegal has 3 of these signature points; the first is located at Malin Head, followed by Fanad Head and Slieve League traditionally known as Sliabh Liag in Irish. Of the total discovery points on the WAW, Inishowen hosts 10 of them to explore along the route.

I N I S H OW E N H I S TO RY Predating the formation of Donegal by centuries, the area was named Inis Eoghain (the Island of Eoghan) after Eoghan, son of Niall The Nine Hostages (Niall Naoigeallach, a High King of Ireland), whose name was also used for Tyrone (Irish: Tír Eoghain). Inis Eoghain is also the ancient homeland of the Mac Lochlainn clan (descended from the tribe of Eoghan), a clan that grew so formidable that they eventually came under siege by a Limerick King, who came north to Aileach, and ordered the destruction of Aileach fort, and that each soldier was to carry away a stone from the fort in order to prevent its rebuilding. Later, after the decline of the Mac Lochlainn clan, the chieftainship of Inis Eoghain was usurped by the O Dochartaigh Clan, as they lost their own homeland in the Laggan Valley area of Tír Conaill.
In 1196, John de Courcy, a Norman knight who had invaded Ulster in 1177, defeated the King of the Cenel Conaill and most of Donegal was at his mercy. Two years later he returned to devastate Inishowen. Inishowen has many historical monuments, dating back to early settlements, and including the ruins of several castles, and the fort, An Grianán of Aileach. The ancient Grianán of Aileach fort at Burt was the one time seat of the High Kings of Ireland, including both High Kings of the Mac Lochlainn Clan, who held power in Inis Eoghain for many centuries. It was restored in the nineteenth century, although some damage in recent years has resulted in the partial collapse of the south side wall. Among the main castle ruins of Inishowen are Carrickabraghey on the Isle of Doagh, the Northburg Castle at Greencastle, Inch Castle, Buncrana Castle and Elagh Castle which is located near Bridgend.

WELL- KN OWN LINKS TO IN IS H OWEN Over the centuries to the present day there have been many famous people associated with this beautiful peninsula from the world of art, culture and sport. The distinguished actor Charles Macklin was born in the village of Culdaff and is famed for his role of Merchant of Venice. A dedicated festival takes place each autumn in Culdaff to celebrate his life and work. John Colgan originated from Carndonagh and was a Franciscan friar in the Irish convent at Louvain, in the 17th century. He was a laborious and voluminous writer on the ecclesiastical antiquities of Ireland, his best known works being, Acta Sanctorum Hiberniae, Lovanii, 1645; and Triadis Thaumaturgae, Lovanii. Agnes Jones lived in Fahan with her family as a
young girl. She became one of Florence Nightingale’s nursing colleagues. Greatly admired for her caring dedication for the sick, she died at the age of 35 from typhus and is buried in St. Mura’s graveyard in Fahan. John Newton composer of the world renowned hymn Amazing Grace, was inspired to pen the famous lyrics after his vessel found safety in the calm waters of Lough Swilly following a near-death experience during a severe storm in 1748. The peninsula has a special association with some of Ireland’s most distinguished writers and musicians. Highly respected award-winning playwright Brian Friel, a resident of Greencastle since 1966. His famous pieces of work include
Philadelphia Here I Come, Translations & Dancing at Lughnasa. Buncrana-born Frank McGuinness, is an award-winning playwright and poet. His plays include The Factory Girls and Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme. Phil Coulter is an international songwriter, pianist and music producer originally from Derry but with strong links to Inishowen. His work includes the award winning album Sea of Tranquility inspired by his love for Lough Swilly. Talented musicians Ciaran Tourish & Tom Byrne both come from Inishowen and are members of Irelands biggest traditional band Altan. The quality of Inishowen’s golf and cycling has caught the attention of two sporting legends. Nick Faldo, a regular visitor to Inishowen, is one of the world’s leading golfers, regards Ballyliffin Golf Club as one of Europe’s best links courses and was responsible for re-designing the Old Links course in 2006. Sean Kelly, Tour de France winner has fully
endorsed Inishowen as a world-class cycling destination and has participated regularly in the annual Tour of Inishowen Cycle Race. Inishowen is fast becoming a sought after location for film production. Award-winning Film Director Vik Serin, who directed Shine of Rainbows, chose Inishowen as the film’s location stating that as soon as he saw the breath-taking scenery he immediately knew he had found a location that would capture the beauty and peacefulness needed for the film’s story line. Shine of Rainbows has wowed audiences all over the world and visually captures the real beauty of Inishowen.

MA LI N H EAD Malin Head is the location of Ireland’s most Northerly Point. In 1870 the first weather reports were recorded, and in 1902 the first wireless message was sent from Malin Head to the ship S.S. Lake Ontario. The most northerly tip of Malin Head, and of Ireland, is known as Banba’s Crown. In 1905, Banba Tower was built as a signal station and was a very important news link between America and Europe before modern communication technology made it redundant. Natural attractions along the cliff edge include a spectacular subterranean cavern know as “Hell’s Hole” and a natural arch called “Devils Bridge”. On a good day the Scottish coast line, Tory Island and nearby Inishtrahull Island are visible.
GR I AN AN OF AIL EACH An Grianan of Aileach Stone Fort is built on the site of the original 1700BC ringfort which is located in Burt. High on a hilltop 800 feet above sea level, the ancient fort looks out over the beautiful waters of Lough Swilly and Lough Foyle, provid-
ing breathtaking views of Inch Island below, and an excellent panorama of Counties Donegal, Derry, Tyrone and Antrim.
ST. PATRIC K’ S C RO SS St. Patrick’s Cross is situated in Carndonagh and dates back to the 7th century, making it one of the very early Christian crosses outside mainland Europe. The cross is beautifully decorated with carvings which at the same time reflect the Christian traditions with biblical reference and also the older Celtic art of interlacing patterns. This suggests again the success achieved in converting the Irish from a Druid based religion to Christianity.
B O CAN STO NE C IRC LE This is an impressive and evocative monument situated on pasture land near St. Mary’s Church Bocan just outside Culdaff. With a diameter of 65-75 feet, consisting possibly of 30 stones originally, the surviving orthostats are fine specimens up to six feet high.
LA TRINIDAD VALENCERA It was just off Kinnego Bay in 1970/71 that divers found the Spanish Armed Transporter,
La Trinidad Valencera, a 1,100 ton wooden ship, which, badly damaged in a storm, had limped into anchor offshore on September 14th 1588 and sank two days later. Many artefacts have been recovered from this vessel and can be seen in the Tower Museum in Derry.
E URO P E ’ S L A RG E S T SA N D D UN E S To the north lies the fine sandy beach known as the “Five Fingers” backed by some of the highest sand dunes in Europe. The sand dunes probably began to form in their present position about 5000 years ago. The tough marram grass grows best when sand is blown on top of it and here great sandhills up to 30 metres high have been built up by the action and wind blowing sand from the beach and into the marram.
S T. M UR A’ S C RO SS The site of the ancient Abbey of St. Mura lies in Fahan Village. This monastery flourished during the seventh century. The most interesting object from this period is the cross of St. Mura which is supposed to mark his grave 654A.D.

Travelling in a north-eastern direction is the village of Greencastle, with the much ruined but still impressive structure “Northburg Castle”. Built by Richard de Burgh, the Red Earl of Ulster in 1305 on a prominent rock, close to the shore. This awesome building utilised the advanced construction techniques of the Normans and the remarkable use of the natural rock to build a fortress intended to prevent attacks from Scotland and to act as a staging post for the final assault on the heartlands of Gaelic Ulster.
This stunning waterfall is located on the outskirts of the village of Clonmany. Its wedge shape cascades fresh mountain water descending over black rock from an astounding height of 30 feet. Designated car park, walkway and picnic areas are provided.
This castle, which was one of the Clan O’Dochertaigh’s strongholds in Inishowen, is one of the best known of all our castles located near the main Derry to Letterkenny road. While you can get quite close to this ancient fortress by taking one of the side-roads off the main, it in fact lies on private land.
INC H W ILDFOW L RESE RVE Ireland’s premier wetland site, Inch Wildfowl Reserve is an internationally significant destination and staging ground for migrating birds from three continents. It is a Special Protected Area (SPA) under the EU birds directive.
This castle was built in the 16th Century during the reign of Henry VIII. This was established when a medallion dated 1525 and a coin dated 1547 were found close by the building.

A MAZIN G GRACE CO UNTRY Ireland’s beautiful Lough Swilly was the setting for a dramatic story which changed the life of a foul mouthed slave trader. John Newton went on to pen one of the most famous and well-loved songs of all time “Amazing Grace”. In 1748 a violent storm in the Atlantic Ocean crippled Newton’s ship. When all hope was lost, the Greyhound found refuge in Lough Swilly, County Donegal in the North West of Ireland. Years later, Newton wrote “Amazing Grace” to chart his
personal spiritual journey which began with his miraculous escape from death. He went on to become a prolific hymn writer and, later in life, to mentor William Wilberforce in his fight against the Slave Trade. He was a changed man thanks to his encounter with God’s Amazing Grace.
KNO C KAM ANY B ENS The Lagg road to Malin Head takes the visitor along the shores of Trawbreaga Bay. The Bay is an area of regional ornithological importance and has been declared a wildlife sanctuary. The road rises sharply following the coastline
around the Knockamany Bens with magnificent views of Trawbreaga Bay from the car park. On a clear day Tory Island can be seen to the west.
THE TEMPLE OF DEEN A fine and well preserved megalithic monument, sometimes called the Laraghill Cairn and lies on the opposite side of the road to the Bocan Stone Circle at the top the Hill of Deen. There are twenty large stones remaining at the forecourt and the first chambers are well preserved.

COASTAL S CEN IC D RI VE It may sound like a Formula 1 race, but it gets its name from the approximate distance in miles of the sign-posted drive, which officially starts in Newtoncunningham on the Inishowen Peninsula. You will certainly not wish to break any speed records as you linger and savour the many scenic and historical gems which Inishowen, Irelands largest peninsula, has to offer.
NEWTON CU N N IN GH A M As can be seen from the surrounding rich and fertile landscape, farming has long been the mainstay of life in this area. A key feature is the Church of All Saints, a new Catholic Church, with a most unique design showing it as a boat in full sail. It is well worth a visit to view the varied array of artwork it contains including a large oil painting by Thomas Ryan, RHA commemorating how the land for the first church here was granted by a local landlord; Mr William Forward.
Grianan (na) of Aileach, takes the form of a massive ringfort on the summit of Grianan Hill which has been the sentinel of Inishowen for over 3000 years, guarding the narrow approaches caused by the Rivers Foyle and Swilly. Also home to Nearby is Burt Castle, one of The Clan O’Dochertaigh’s strongholds in Inishowen and was built in the 16th Century during the reign of Henry VIII. Burt is also the location of a The unique award-winning designed St.Aengus’ Catholic Church, which opened in 1967, was designed by Liam Mc Cormack, who took inspiration from the circular shape of An Grianan Aileach.
B U RNFO OT This is the anglicised version of the name “Bun Na hAbhann” or “Foot of the River” and shows the Scottish influence locally, as “Burn”, a Scottish term for a small stream or rivulet. This village is an excellent starting off point when visiting the nearby Inch Wildfowl Reserve.

Burt Village is steeped in history and home to one of Inishowen’s most iconic sites, An
Situated on the southwest corner of Inishowen is Inch Island and Blanket Nook. While
the name of the place is Inch Island, it is in fact attached to the mainland by a wide causeway. Anywhere on this island is excellent for bird watching, especially from the Causeway itself. Between Inch Island and the mainland lies a region of drained polder land, which has an area of 1,200 hectares. Here Whooper Swans are of international importance with, on average, 300 birds overwintering. In the 15th century, Sir Cahir O’Doherty built a castle near the southern end of the island, parts of which are still visible today. There is also a fully functioning pier on the northern side of the island with easy access to Lough Swilly.

This is the site of the ancient 7th Century Abbey of St Mura. The cross of St. Mura marks his grave 654A.D. Other artefacts found here are the Wishing Stone and Greek Cross both of which are set in the outer wall surrounding the site. Legible marked graves date from 1652 and include the names of the early plantation settlers of the area. Another grave worthy of

note is that of Agnes Jones a nursing colleague of Florence Nightingale who died in 1868. Across the road in the grounds of the Protestant Church is the mass grave of the 68 victims of H.M.S Laurentic which was lost on January 26th 1917 at the mouth of Lough Swilly following an attack by a German U-Boat. A major claim to fame for this village is that Cecil Frances Alexander, wife of the then Anglican Bishop of Derry, wrote “There is a Green Hill Far Away”, “All Thing Bright and Beautiful” and “Once in David’s Royal City”, while living in the local rectory. The focal point of Fahan is the Lough Swilly Marina, which provides a sheltered anchorage for 400 boats and yachts of varying sizes.
BUNC RAN A Buncrana is located on the banks of Lough Swilly, which translates, from the Gaelic into the very appropriate “Lake of Shadows”. The importance of Lough Swilly to Buncrana during W.W.1 became evident when Admiral Jellicoe moved his grand fleet from Scapa Flow to Lough Swilly.
The Clan O’Dochertaigh has had a long affiliation with this town and the historic O’Dochertaigh’s Keep still stands near the lovely walk towards Fr.Hegarty’s Rock. Also nearby is the spot where Wolfe Tone was taken ashore following his capture on board a French warship during the 1798 rebellion. The town also has a beautiful coastal walk and riverside trail in Swans Park.
DUNREE & DESTERTEGNEY Fort Dunree, which is perched majestically on a rocky outcrop overlooking Lough Swilly, demonstrates its vital role in coastal defence and neutrality protection with a complete expose of coastal artillery. Newly developed hill-side walks enable visitors to get breath taking views of the Atlantic and Fanad Head. The monastic site of Desertegney is dedicated to St. Columba and the area is one of spectacular scenery overlooking most of Lough Swilly, while in the distance lie the Urris Mountains with the famous Gap of “Mamore”
which allows access to the Urris/Dunaff peninsula.
M A M O R E GA P With views of Leenan and Urris, the Gap of Mamore, five miles north of Buncrana passes between Mamore Hill and Urris at 800ft. above sea level. This is a favourite spot for tourists and locals alike with its spectacular views of the Inishowen Peninsula and beyond to the broad sweep of the Atlantic Ocean. For the energetic it’s the starting point of the Urris Lakes Loop and Butlers Glen Loop Walking Trails.
UR R I S The trip down from the Urris Mountains through the “Gap of Mamore” towards Urris on the steep winding road is one of the most breath taking in the country and it is well worth your while to stop and take in the magnificent vista before, and below you, stretching all the way to Dunaff Head or on a clear day you can see Tory Island. Just at the base of the mountain lie five beautiful Irish cottages, painstakingly restored to their original condition.

C LONM AN Y The traditional Irish village lies beside a river overlooked and sheltered by four awe-inspiring mountains; Bulbin, rising to 1,500 feet, (457.1 M), Raghtin Mor rising to ( 1,656 feet, (504.7M), Binion at 830 feet (252.9M) and towering overall; Sliabh Sneacht at a mighty 2,019 feet (615.3 M). Close to the village and well signposted is the popular recently restored walk to Glenevin Waterfall. Also nearby you can enjoy a stroll on the beautiful Binion and Tullagh Strands.
BA LLY LIFFIN One of the chief attractions of this delightful little seaside resort is its magnificent stretch of golden sands, over 2 miles in length, known as Pollan Strand which is superb for windsurfing and surfing. There is also a children’s playground at the beach. Carrickabraghy Castle, built around 1,500 A.D was a stronghold of the Clan O’Dochertaigh, one of its original occupiers being Phelemy Brasleigh O’Dochertaigh. It is accessible by walking along the beach. Ballyliffin is also home to one of Ireland’s finest golf clubs with two outstanding, but contrasting links courses. The Old Links and Glashedy Links set in natural terrain and incredible dunes, are ‘a must’ for golf fanatics and a favourite of Nick Faldo and Rory Ilroy.
DOAGH IS L AN D On the route from Ballyliffin to Carndonagh, this was an island until after the Ice Age, when melting ice left the sea at more than 50 meters below
the present level. 6,000 years ago it was again an island to the mainland and wave action pushed ashore sand which was blown into dunes. There are records showing the Isle of Doagh itself inhabited as far back as the early 9th Century. The isle of Doagh (BarMouth or Lagg) is a wonderful location for Spinning or free lining Sand Eel from both sides of the channel and for Sea Trout. Doagh Famine Village Visitor Centre, one of Inishowen’s top visitor attraction which traces the changing times of Ireland from 1800’s to the present day, is located at Doagh Isle.
CARNDO NAG H The chief glory of this market town is the famous St. Patrick’s Cross. It has been dated to the 7th century which would make it one of the very early Christian crosses outside mainland Europe. The cross is 11ft. 6 inches in height and is regarded as one of the finest examples in Ireland of low relief carving remaining from ancient times. Alongside the cross are two pillar stones each carved on all sides. The most impressive sight to greet the visitor en route into town is the magnificent granite-built Sacred Heart Church, which towers above the town centre where four roads from the main compass points meet. Every single stone for this magnificent building was hand-carved and laid by Master Stone Masons from all over Ireland.
M ALIN An interesting and unspoilt
17th century plantation village picturesquely situated at the head of Trawbreaga Bay. An interesting feature of the approach to the town is the bridge with its ten arches spanning the bay. It is the second largest stone bridge in Ireland. The original triangular village green is still intact, planted with limes, sycamore and cherries, and recently with oaks to commemorate the O’Doherty clan. All round the village are signs of the care that has won it many awards in the National Tidy Towns competition, including the much coveted overall prize in 1970. The Church of Ireland parish church has a fine three state battlemented tower with square pinnacles. The Lagg Road to Malin Head takes the visitor along the shores of Trawbreaga Bay. The Bay is an area of regional ornithological importance and has been declared a wildlife sanctuary. The road rises sharply following the coastline around the Knockamany Bens with magnificent views of Trawbreaga Bay from the car park. On a clear day Tory Island can be seen to the west and to the north lies the fine sandy beach known as the “Five Fingers Strand” backed by some of the highest sand dunes in Europe.
MALIN HEAD Visitors should not miss Banba’s Crown Malin Head. It is not just Ireland’s most northerly point, but an area of great scenic beauty and of historical, scientific and ecological importance. The circuit of the Head will take you past the Radio Station, built in 1910, and round the coast to

Banba’s Crown, the northern tip of Ireland. Here a tall derelict building known locally as “The Tower” was built in 1908 by the Admiralty, and later used as a Lloyds Signal Station. During the Second World War, the small huts were built and used by our defence forces to keep a lookout and protect our neutrality. It is also a perfect starting point for a ramble along the cliffs to Hell’s Hole, a remarkable subterranean cavern 250 feet long and 8 feet wide, into which the tide rushes with great force. Nearby is a picturesque natural arch called the Devil’s Bridge.
GLENGAD This area is on the scenic ‘Inishowen 100’ coastal route and you can reach it by driving or walking through some of the most rugged and scenic countryside imaginable which is well worth a visit. For generations Glengad has been a traditional fishing area, a practice still continued today and where the visitor can take in views of Inishtrahull, Rathlin Islands and further out to sea to the Western Isles of Scotland.
C ULDAFF A picturesque village, with two fine stone bridges and a triangular green featuring a now disused pump house. In Culdaff River you can see St. Boden’s ‘Boat’, a stone in which he crossed from Scotland. Only the sceptic will doubt the marks of his fingers! Situated on a pretty estuary, there are beautiful sandy beaches which have Blue Flag status. Culdaff is a fine walking area with cliff scenery stretching north-west
to Malin Head and southwards to Inishowen Head. The famous Shakespearian actor, Charles Macklin, was born here and his memory is celebrated with an annual autumn festival.
KINNEG O BAY The scenery as you approach this beautiful cove is quite breathtaking and when you descend to the actual beach you feel as if you are in another world, feeling totally cut off by the sea in front and the sheer cliffs to every side. Glenagivney, called the “Queen of the Inishowen Glens,” runs inland from Kinnagoe Bay towards Lecamy. At Lecamy an example of an ancient sweat-house can be found. They were an early form of Turkish or sauna bath. It is believed that the almost enclosed chamber was heated like an oven and people crept in and then, having been sweated, rushed out to immerse themselves in cold water. Tradition has it that they were used as a cure for rheumatism. It was just off Kinnego Bay in 1970/71 that divers found the Spanish Armed Transporter, La Trinidad Valencera, a 1,100 ton wooden ship, which, badly damaged in a storm, had limped into anchor offshore on September 14th 1588 and sank two days later.
B O CAN, G LE NEE LY, CARROW M E NAG H, RE DFO RD These areas must also be referred to en-bloc because they contain possibly the widest range and greatest number
of historical sites and ancient monuments in Inishowen. Among the ancient sites to visit in these areas are, Cloncha Church, Cross of St. Boden, Larrahirril Court Tomb, Bocan Stone Circles, Kindroyhead Standing Stone and Carrowmore High Cross. These areas have also been the birthplace of many well-known authors who have contributed greatly to our knowledge of our past and still continue to supply us with some wonderful reading material. Brian Bonner, Sean Beattie, John A. McLaughlin, Hazel Clarke/ McIntyre, Evelyn Ruddy, Neil McGrory and Bridget O’Toole have written some superb works on various aspects of life in the area as well as local and general history. Nearby is Tremone Bay where in 1848 a Young Irelander, Thomas D’Arcy McGee escaped from his pursuers and eventually ended up in Canada where he became one of the founders of the Confederation of Canada and a Government Minister.
G R E E N CAS T L E This is a popular resort with a fine beach. It is an important commercial fishing port. It was once a place of considerable importance. Richard de Burgo, the Red Earl of Ulster, selected the place as a site for a castle to dominate the O’Donnells and the O’Dohertys of Inishowen. This village has been synonymous with the sea for centuries and many generations of its people have sailed the seven

However, numerous locations in Inishowen such as Dunree Fort, Mamore Gap, Tullagh Point, Polaan Bay, Carrickabraghy Castle, Malin Head, Shrove and Inishowen Head is host to sightings of these magical
seas. It is therefore only fitting that there is a Maritime Museum and Planetarium, with hundreds of relics of the sea, situated here, along with the Irish National Fisheries School, which prepares young men and women for a life at sea both practically and academically.
SHRO OVE A favourite walk in Shroove leads to Port-a-doris - Port of the Door. The “Door” to the lovely cave is a natural arch. There is a wishing well where those who drink the water are said to have their wishes granted. Near Shroove, there is an ancient cross-inscribed pillar stone and a small modern cross. A spring dedi-
cated to St. Colmcille spouts near the stone. The saint is said to have stopped here for water on his way to Iona. Located close to Inishowen Head, this area has many lovely small coves including a beautiful sandy beach known as “The Big White Bay” overlooked by Shroove Lighthouse. Its main attraction of course has to be the fact that it is a European Blue Flag Beach and with the standards that apply to this type of accreditation, it ensures that this beach is also an excellent place for bathing.
M OVILLE A busy scenic market town, located along the banks of
Lough Foyle. Moville can also boast of having the ancestral home, called New Park House, of Field-Marshal Montgomery of North Africa and El Alamein fame. To further emphasise this link, overlooking the shorefront is a row of wonderful Victorian houses built in 1884 and named Montgomery Terrace. These houses have all been tastefully restored to their former glory. Here is also the starting point to the Moville-Greencastle coastal walk.

QUIGL EYS P OIN T
Located on the eastern shore of the Inishowen peninsula, overlooking Lough Foyle, at probably its widest point. Quigley’s Point lies on the main road between Derry City and Moville and is a key Junction for travellers heading for most areas of North Inishowen. The Village of Quigley’s point is also known as ‘Carrowkeel’ as it is marked as such on Irish Ordnance Survey maps. However all local signage and local post office give the name “Quigley’s Point” to the village.
MUFF This small village on the border of Donegal and Derry has a Church of Ireland built by the Harts of Kilderry House which dates from 1737. The house itself, part Palladian in design, dates from the 18th century. Muff is in the parish of Iskaheen or in Gaelic, Uisce Chaoin, “pure waters” because of a holy well near an ancient church, formerly situated in the area. This parish has numerous famous historical connections. One is the ruin of an old church, which lies outside the village opposite the existing Catholic Church of St. Patrick. This old ruin with its graveyard is reputed to date from the 8th century.
The second famous item in this parish is the plaque inserted in the wall of this same old church, which reads: “Eoghan, Prince of Inishowen, Son of Niall of the Nine Hostages, died 465 of grief for his brother Conall. Baptised by Patrick and buried in Uisce Chaoin.” The third is the “Giant Stone,” locally known as the “Morton God.” It is a collapsed dolmen or an ancient burial place, thought to be the biggest in Inishowen. Such monuments were used as graves for chieftains and also as “altars” for pagan worship.

It supports a wide diversity of wintering waterfowl, notably swans and geese, as well as breeding terns, gulls, waders and duck. Being on the western- most part of Europe it also attracts a fair share of unusual birds throughout the year.

W ILDLIF E Inishowen is home to a large variety of habitats, animals, birds and plants, albeit within a relatively small area. The habitats range from the rich farmland in the south of the peninsula to mountain and bog land in the centre and north. Inishowen is bounded on the west by Lough Swilly with Lough Foyle to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the north, and this long coastline ranges from mudflats at the inner reaches of the Loughs, through sandy beaches in the middle reaches to rugged rock and cliff on the Atlantic coast. There are small areas of natural woodland of mainly oak and much larger areas of state conifer forestry. The wetlands of Inch Lake and Blanket Nook are often mentioned in bird books as important areas for Ducks and
Geese. The small area of hayfields around Malin Head have become very important recently as one of the few places in Ireland where the Corncrake still breeds.
BI R D WATC H I N G The Inishowen Peninsula is renowned all over the world for this activity, especially places such as Burt, Inch, Trawbreaga Bay, Loughs Swilly and Foyle and Banba’s Crown. Birds that nest on the cliffs of North Inishowen include the Shag, Guillemot, Fulmer and Kittiwake. The Fulmer looks like a seagull but is related to the Albatross which can be seen in its stiff wing flight. Fulmars were rare in Ireland but are thought to have benefited from the waste products of the fishing industry. An easy place to see Fulmars nesting is beside the car park at Fort Dunree Military Museum (where there is a small museum showing the wildlife of the peninsula). They can also be seen at Culdaff and at Malin Head. Rock Doves which are wild ancestors of city pigeons nest on ledges of sea caves. The Chough is a rare bird of the crow family with a

slender red bill and red legs. Another bird seen around the coastline is the Oystercatcher. These black and white birds with long red bills and legs have a distinctive “peep peep” call. A similar looking but much smaller winter visitor is the Turnstone which gets its name from its habit of turning over small stones in its search for small shellfish. Another small black and white bird is the Ringed Plover which are often invisible among the beach shingle and pebbles until it does its distinctive burst of running, and when you move closer they then fly away in a flock.
I NI SHTRAH U L L Malin Head is the most northerly point of the Irish mainland but to the North East lies the small island of Inishtrahull. This island has the oldest rocks in Ireland and is closer in rock type to Greenland. A small community of fishermen and their families lived here until the early 1900’s and a manned Lighthouse only became automatic over twenty years ago. Now the island is left to the birds and the Grey Seals that breed on nearby rocky
islets and basking sharks that populate its waters.
ARTS & CO NTEMPO RARY C U LTU RE Inishowen has definitely put its stamp firmly on Irish arts from theatre and literary heritage to music, film, art and exhibitions. Frank McGuinness, Sean Beatie, Ros Harvey, Hazel McIntyre and Sharon McDaid to name but a few. Be inspired by the beauty and depth of our historical past and cultural fabric.
THEATRE There is an abundance of local drama groups and productions dotted throughout Inishowen such as the Cairn Theatre in Greencastle, The Flough in Muff and The Rambling House in Carndonagh. A natural talent and flair of its people shows the true character of Inishowen.
M USIC When it comes to music, Inishowen has something for everyone traditional, jazz, bluegrass and contemporary. It is renowned for the quality and diversity of its live music with venues such as McGrory’s
Backroom hosting many famous national and international artists. Local hotels and pubs invite local artists to perform showcasing unique and local music talent.
