HEART OF THE CITY b y SIT IN G YAO
The aim of this photobook project is to rediscover my connection to the city as a migrant, through the methodology of taking an aimless walking experience navigated by heartbeat data.After living in London as a migrant for the fourth year, I have more complicated feelings about the city than I did before. This is the city I live in every day, but I know that one day I will leave. It's a contradictory feeling, London seems both familiar and unfamiliar to me.How could I connect with the city in a different way than before? The red dot on my heartbeat data, give me the idea to let my own physiological data decide where I will go. This guidance comes from myself but is not subjective.Thus, the certainty of the data appeased the precarious sense of belonging within me.By combining the heartbeat data with a map of London, I obtained 10 locations in the heart of London. Through the walking experience and recording what I saw on the road with my film camera, I rediscover my connection with London. The details of the city and the people in it become more lively in my eyes.
