How does it work?

DISC-LOCK Washer Installation Procedures

Proven Applications

The working principle behind the Disc-Lock Washer is simple. It consists of two washershaped pieces which are preassembled (glued pairs) which have inclined cams on one side and a series of ridges on the other. On installation the two cam sides are mated together and placed between the nut and the joint material. Under vibration the nut will attempt to rotate loose but, as the angle of the cams is greater than the pitch angle of the thread on the bolt, the interlocking cams and the nonslip ridges of the Disc-Lock Washer work together to create a jamming effect. This effect prevents loosening and further locks the assembly, thereby maintaining joint integrity. The result is a fastening system that is vibration proof according to Military Standards. (United States Military MIL-STD-1312, Vibration Test 7. Test Results data available upon written request.)

1 To install the Disc-Lock Washer, simply place the preassembled pair of washers between the nut and the joint material.

The Disc-Lock Washer outperforms all other types of loose, washered, threaded or pinned systems in a wide range of high stress, corrosive and vibration sensitive applications including:

The Disc-Lock Washer is not only a vibration-proof locking device but also a heavy duty structural locking device recommended for the most stressful applications.

● Automotive Industries - cars, trucks, buses ● Compressors ● Construction ● Cranes ● Farm Equipment ● Foundries ● Go-Kart Racing 2 As the nut is tightened, one half of the Disc-Lock Washer is seated to joint material and the other to the nut.

● Manufactured in 1010 carbon steel and case hardened to 40/55 on the Rockwell C scale to a depth of 0.005 (0.13mm) ● Coated with Delta Protekt (Color - silver matte) Minimum 600 hours of salt spray ● Can be used with Grade 2, 5, 8 and even stronger bolts

Disc-Lock washers are sold in pairs. These pairs may be glued together for easier installation. However, due to circumstances beyond our control during shipping and handling, some washers may become separated. This does not effect the operation of the washers and these washers should not be returned as defective.

3 When the bolt elongates due to vibration and shock, the nut will attempt to rotate loose. As one half of the Disc-Lock Washer tries to rotate with the nut, the interlocking cams work against each other. This will maintain the preload and lock the assembly.

Once applied and installed correctly the Disc-Lock Washer will ensure that the fastener remains secure and that nuts and bolts do not require retightening.

● Heavy Equipment Manufacturers ● Logging Equipment ● Marine Installations ● Military ● Mining ● Oil Drilling Rigs (On and Off-shore)

Specifications and Ordering Information 4 As the bolt contracts, the inclined planes of the cams cause the nut to rotate back to its original position.

5 In common with most fastening devices, Disc-Lock Washers should only be used against flat, relatively smooth metal surfaces. 6 If the joint material is not metal, the Disc-Lock Washer may be used by securing a metal plate to the joint material in such a manner that the metal plate will not rotate. 7 A torque wrench is not required when installing Disc-Lock Washers. 8 An air-gun can be used when installing and removing Disc-Lock Washers.

How does it work?

DISC-LOCK Locking Nut Installation

The Disc-Lock Locking Nut is a vibration and shock proof, free spinning locking nut. It consists of two components, each with interlocking cams, which are joined together to form a one-piece assembly.

To install the Disc-Lock Locking Nut follow the same procedure as for conventional nuts and torque to normal specifications. To remove the Disc-Lock Locking Nut place the wrench or socket over both hexes and loosen.

The top component of the Disc-Lock Locking Nut is a threaded hexagon nut with cams on the underside and a pilot that retains the washer. The bottom component is a hex flange washer with cams on the top and a smooth bearing surface. When the assembly is subjected to vibration and shock, the interlocking cams of the DiscLock Locking Nut attempt to rise against each other. As the cam rise angles are greater than the pitch angle of the threads, the assembly locks and maintains the clamp load of the bolted connection, thereby protecting joint integrity.

Technical Specification Key features of the Disc-Lock Locking Nut • Free Spinning (No thread interference) • One piece assembly • No washer required • Installed with standard equipment, no special tools required • Easy to remove • Reusable • Manufactured from medium carbon steel

DISC-LOCK TENSION CONTROL BOLTS MANUFACTURED EXCLUSIVELY BY DISC-LOCK INTERNATIONAL

Consistent tension • Visual inspection Will not loosen due to shock or vibration Available in hex head and button head configurations Tension Control Bolts are replacing conventional high strength friction grip bolts and swaged collar rivets because they are quick and easy to install using the lightweight DISC-LOCK electric shear wrench. Guaranteed tension, along with visual inspection, eliminates the likelihood of operator error and ensures engineers that connections are tightened in accordance with specifications. The Hex Head Bolt, when combined with the DISC-LOCK Hex Head Nut, is easily removed and can be reused. Other manufacturer’s bolts are not reusable because they must be burned or cut to be removed, thus destroying the bolt.

www.disc-lock.com

DISC-LOCK Tension Control Bolts are produced with full factory mill certifications and lot identification marked on the head of each bolt. Tension Control Bolts meet all AISC requirements and specifications of A.S.T.M. A325M. A490M structural bolts and DISC-LOCK nuts meet all physical requirements of A.S.T.M. A194-2H. The DISC-LOCK Fastening System is approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Rail Administration. Each container of DISC-LOCK Rapid Tension Bolts and Nuts are labeled with lot number identification which corresponds to the lot number marked on each bolt in that container. The lot number allows for traceability of the bolt from raw material through manufacturing. The accompanying certification documents are traced to the actual bolts by the lot number identification system. This fastening system is reusable with no performance degradation from repeated use. It provides greater reliability through preset tension and does not require tool calibration, eliminating operator error. The FRA (Federal Railroad Administration) has approved DISC-LOCK products for use in railroad equipment applications.

DISC-LOCK SHEAR WRENCH

MANUFACTURED EXCLUSIVELY BY DISC-LOCK INTERNATIONAL

• Electric motor - 120V/220V operation • Light weight compared to hydraulic wrenches • One man operation - saves installation cost • No torque pass to the operator The DISC-LOCK shear wrench model DL-537E is electric and light-weight compared to hydraulic wrenches. This translates into a one-man operation, saving installation cost. The unique design of the DISC-LOCK shear wrench uses an outer socket that engages the nut while the inner socket engages the bolt. The two sockets rotate in counter force allowing the nut to turn while the bolt remains stationary. This counter force operation allows no torque to pass to the operator, reducing fatigue that can cause carpal tunnel syndrome which is a compensable injury and not desirable.

DISC-LOCK HEAVY HEX NUT

THE WORLD’S SAFEST WHEEL NUT

THE DISC-LOCK SAFETY WHEEL NUT with NEW environmentally friendly, anti-corrosion coating

I N T E R N A T I O N A L

Vehicle Safety Invention Award

www.disc-lock.com

Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut

The vibration and shock-proof wheel nut for trucks, trailers and buses which eliminates the risk of wheel loss.* *As confirmed by MIRA Tests (see back page)

The Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut: ● maintains wheels on axles ● is approved by vehicle and axle manufacturers ● is fitted by major fleet operators worldwide ● is as simple to install as a standard two-piece wheel nut

What is the Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut? The Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut is specifically designed to prevent wheel loss from commercial vehicles such as trucks, trailers and buses. Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nuts have proven to be far superior in terms of safety than standard two-piece wheel nuts. The combination of lateral, bending forces on the road-wheels due to cornering, and torsional forces due to braking and acceleration which result in settling and looseness of normal bolted assemblies cause Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nuts to maintain the clamping force and to lock. thus keeping the wheels secure on the axle.

How does the Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut work? 1

2

3

Unlike a standard two-piece wheel nut, the Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut is split into three sections, comprising a nut (1), a hexagon-flanged washer (2) and a flat faced cup washer (3). These sections are joined together to form a one-piece assembly with a C-clip. The top two sections (1 & 2) have interlocking cams. When subjected to road shock or vibration, the most common causes of wheel nut loosening, the interlocking cams of the Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut attempt to rise against each other.

DL The angle of the cam (DL) is greater than the pitch angle of the thread on the stud (T).

T

DL>T As the angle of the cam is greater than the pitch angle of the thread on the stud, a wedging action takes place and the Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut locks and will not come loose, thus maintaining the clamp load and keeping the wheel on the axle.

New features for 2006 Disc-Lock is always working hard to find ways in which to improve its products. Main new features of this latest version of the Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut are: ● Indestructible - The nut has been strengthened considerably to overcome the problems caused by impact wrench abuse. Though, it should be noted, that while the Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut can now withstand such abuse, the same cannot be said of the stud. This could experience untold damage, in particular stretching of the stud, if the wheel nut is severely over torqued. ● Better socket engagement - The height of the middle hexagon-flanged washer (see section 2 in diagram on left) has been increased to give better socket engagement. ● New, environmentally-friendly coating GEOMET®. The Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut is now coated with a new, environmentallyfriendly, anti-corrosion protection, GEOMET®, which is chrome free, ensuring it is compliant with European Union Directive 2002/95/EC (Restriction of Hazardous Substances). This new coating has passed a 720 hours salt spray test.

www.disc-lock.com

The patented Disc-Lock system is approved by vehicle and axle manufacturers throughout the world and the Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut is installed by many truck and bus fleets worldwide who recognize the Nut as an essential safety device.

What the experts say: “The Disc-Lock nut should be encouraged and publicized because practical experience shows that it does make a major contribution to road safety and it is the most significant improvement to wheel security for years”. —Eur Ing Don H Wright, Bsc (Eng), CEng, FI MechE.

How to install & remove the Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut The Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut is easy to install and remove. Indeed, it is installed in exactly the same way as a standard two-piece wheel nut. To install or remove, simply place the socket over the hexagon nut and hexagon flanged washer and tighten or loosen. Refer to axle manufacturer’s instructions for torque settings. A detailed installation instruction leaflet and workshop poster is available on request to Disc-Lock International, tel 310/944-9352 or email info@disc-lock.com. Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nuts keep wheels secure if maintained and installed correctly.

Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut On Test MIRA Test In December 2004 the Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut underwent a severe performance test at the Motor Industrial Research Association (MIRA) Proving Ground in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, UK. A fully-laden semi-trailer/tractor-unit combination (weight 35 ton) was fitted with Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nuts on the nearside and standard two-piece wheel nuts on the offside. Over a two-day period the vehicle was driven around a figure-of-eight track to apply lateral bending movements to the wheels. In addition, repeated forward and rearward emergency braking was undertaken to induce torsional slipping forces to the wheels. At the completion of each cycle of thirty minutes a torque check was undertaken. Actual truck and trailer used for the MIRA Test.

These checks revealed no loss of torque on any of the Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nuts at any stage. The same could not be said of the standard two-piece wheel nuts, a staggering 50% of which had come loose by the end of the test. To obtain a detailed copy of this MIRA Test report call Disc-Lock International at 310/944-9352 or e-mail info@disc-lock.com

Junker Vibration Test Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nuts are tested on a Junker Vibration Test machine which is named after its German designer Gerhard Junker. Junker’s theories are based in part on the so-called “longform torque equation” relating the torque applied to a fastener to the frictional and elastic reactions to that DISC-LOCK INTERNATIONAL torque. The Junker Test machine works as follows: an eccentric cam generates a controllable amount of transverse displacement on the joint under test. A load cell measures the actual transverse forces exerted on the joint. One can determine the relationship between residual preload in the fastener under test and external vibratory forces created by the test machine as a function of time.
