PUBLISHER’S NOTE
WATCHING THE WHEELS
“I’m just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round.”
-John Lennon
John Lennon helped changed the world with his musical genius. He was an integral part of the zeitgeist that was the 1960s and 1970s cultural and political revolution.
John’s belief that we could “imagine all the people, livin’ life in peace” wasn’t in vain, regardless of how tragically his life was taken in 1980, and how toxic the world can seem today. Many people have cultivated inward and outward peace because that song made a difference. “Imagine” is one of the most elegiac and spiritually aspirational songs ever written. Those lyrics should be implanted in our brains and played on a mantric loop. The world would be better for it.
As a Beatles freak, I know John was as conflicted as any of us, maybe more. He was at times, during his all too brief 40 years on earth, angsty and acidtongued, and fought deeply rooted demons successfully and unsuccessfully, like many of us do.
Regardless of his worldly accomplishments (defining popular music and culture and antiwar activism), nothing was more definitive than when he unburdened himself from his inner turmoil and tuned out most of the world’s messiness.
John’s true success was only realized when he took a cleansing life-breath, sat back and gave himself the gift of leaping off life’s dizzying merry-go-round. He had to let it all go so he could become the realized person he was meant to be. Better health, raising his son, family travel, baking bread and creating a new life so he could truly experience peace and love. It was the greatest accomplishment of his life.
You can’t take that away from the man. My hope is that we all take something away from his story.
Summer is here. I hope you’ll have many sublime moments relishing your cocktails, smoking wonderful cigars and watching the wheels go round and round.
Sincerely,
Randy Mastronicola Editor & Publisher @cigarandspirits

TAILORED SCENTS OF DISTINCTION
SCENT IS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL TRIGGERS OF MEMORY THERE IS, capable of transporting us back to specific moments and emotions with just a whiff.
Bread baking in grandma’s kitchen, cigar smoke drifting out of father’s office, a vanilla lip gloss that reminds you of the first girl you ever kissed…imagine being able to wrap those memories into a custom-made cologne that defines your very you. As Coco Chanel once said, "Perfume is the invisible, unforgettable, fashionable accessory that announces your arrival and prolongs your departure."
The following three master perfumers are already known for their high-end fragrance collections, but a select few people know that they also offer custom experiences that will take your cologne from Sephora-standard to a thing of rarity.
“ YOUR TWO-HOUR OLFACTORY EXPERIENCE WILL TRANSPORT YOU INTO THIS HEADY SPACE OF HISTORY AND NOSTALGIA, COMPLETE WITH FRAGRANCE OILS HAND-POURED INTO ANTIQUE GLASSWARE FOR YOU TO CHOOSE FROM.”
FLORIS LONDON SMELLING LIKE A BRITISH ARISTOCRAT SINCE 1730
FLORIS, A LEGENDARY NAME IN BRITISH PERFUMERY, HAS BEEN CRAFTING SCENTS SINCE 1730. Nearly three centuries ago, Juan Famenias Floris crafted his first fragrance and documented the formula in a large leather-bound book. These records have been carefully preserved at the Floris perfumery on 89 Jermyn Street—the same location that hosts their bespoke fragrance experience—where nine generations of perfumers have fine-tuned their creations over hundreds of years.
If you fancy something vintage, you’re in luck. Winston Churchill’s favorite scent Special Number 127 is still in stock. More of a 007 guy?
James Bond author Ian Fleming fell hard enough for the brand’s orange and bergamot-infused Number 89 that he even put it in one of his Bond books.
Your two-hour olfactory experience will transport you into this heady space of history and nostalgia, complete with fragrance oils hand-poured into antique glassware for you to choose from. Relax with a glass of champagne while Floris’ scent experts interview you to find a scent direction. From there, the
experts will build a base, and layer on complimentary heart and head notes until you’ve found your scent legacy.
Fragrance Creation: Starts at $950 for a 2-hour session and a 100ml engraved bottle. A session for two people can also be arranged for $1,600.
Replenishments: Your formula will be securely archived in Floris's ledgers, ensuring that your personalized scent can be recreated for generations to come. Replenishments start at $250.

TECHNIQUE INDISCRÈTE FROM FASHION TO FRAGRANCE
TECHNIQUE INDISCRÈTE, CREATED BY LOUISON LIBERTIN GRAJCAR, embodies fashion-forward expression without too much pretension. Born in Belgium and trained in the arts, Louison is the only Belgian perfumer who designs and produces his own perfumes and clothing. His commitment to ethical and sustainable practices can be seen in his penchant for organic forms and poetic homages to nature, such as in the cologne Centenaire he created while imagining two trees living together like an elderly couple. Unsurprisingly, it features base notes of cedar and top notes of foliage.
Follow in the footsteps of John Galliano, a fan of the brand, and dive into this deeply personal service. Louison will take into account your tastes, desires, and life experiences to create a fragrance that reflects your soul. This service can be conducted via Zoom or phone for international clients.
After initial discussions, Louison develops three formulas based on your olfactory profile. You then can test these at home, allowing you to live with and refine your chosen scent. The final fragrance is personalized with a name of your choice.

MAISON GUERLAIN: EAU DE EXCELLENCE
MAISON GUERLAIN, THE MOST WELL-KNOWN NAME on this list, has been perfecting the art of bespoke fragrance since the creation of Eau de Cologne Impériale in 1853. Each scent is born from a meeting with Guerlain’s Master Perfumer, Thierry Wasser. Through detailed consultations, Thierry crafts a unique concept that can take as many revisions as necessary until the client finds their perfect formula.
The final scent is stored securely in the Guerlain fragrance archives so that clients can reorder their cologne throughout their lifetime. The scent is presented in Guerlain’s iconic Bee Bottle, created in 1853 in honor of Empress Eugenie and Napolean III’s wedding. It is then housed in a custom box created in collaboration with La Maison Moynat, the renowned French luggage maker.

IT’S CLEAR TO SEE THE OGS OF DENIM ARE MAKING A COMEBACK. Whether you're a die-hard denim head or the kind of guy who wears the same pair until they’re ready to walk by themselves, this guide is your ticket to finding jeans that last.
Despite the recent uptick in companies promoting raw denim, selvage style is about as old school as it gets, taking us back to the origin of denim itself. The fabric was first woven in the 1700s in Nimes, France. When it was exported abroad, merchants hawked their hardworking fabric as being de Nimes (from Nimes), which non-French speakers transformed into denims. A century later, denim found its way to the U.S. courtesy of the King of Jeans, Levi Strauss.
Crafted on slow-moving shuttle looms, selvage denim boasts a distinctive selffinished edge, earning its name from this unique characteristic. When the cuff of the jeans is turned up, we’re rewarded with a nice, neat vertical band of light blue that contrasts with the indigo of the exterior denim. Crisp seams with a popping colored thread, usually red, run along the outseam. So why the resurgence in selvage denim's popularity? Two words—sustainability and style. Made with care and precision, they’re the eco-warriors of denim. Less waste, more wear. Unlike their pre-faded counterparts, selvage denim ages gracefully, each wear leaving its mark, resulting in a bespoke fade that's as unique as your thumbprint.
Ready to rock selvage like a style icon? Take a cue from the timeless cool of the 1950s. While you might not be into the decade’s classic fedoras and company man suits, you can’t go wrong with the effortless charm of James Dean’s raw denim jeans and white tees. Embrace the selvage by cuffing your jeans and showcasing that distinctive stripe. When it comes to care, take it easy on the washing—selvage jeans prefer a lowkey approach. Opt for a gentle cycle, low temperature, and air drying. Breaking in raw denim might take some time, but trust us, the payoff is worth it.

FLYTECO BREWING WITH ALTITUDE
THE IDEA OF CUSTOM BEER-MAKING HAS BEEN AROUND FOR A WHILE. After all, homebrew kits are marketed like crazy for Father’s Day and every dude-centric gift-giving occasion. But anyone who has actually tried one knows that firstly, they’re messy, and secondly, you don’t have that much control over how your beer tastes. Sure, home brewing can scratch that mad scientist itch we all have now and again, but after all the fermenting is said and done, does your beer taste good?
This leads us to FlyteCo’s Interactive Beer-Making Experience. If you happen to be in Denver, Colorado, you can leave the gear to the pros while crafting your beer to your ideal flavor profile. FlyteCo, an aviationthemed brewery, located at the former Stapleton International Airport Control Tower, has launched an experimental three-barrel pilot system that allows customers to create one-of-a-kind beers over a collaborative brew day. The company, started by a pair of pilot-engineers with a passion for beer, has garnered several awards, including a silver medal for their Marzen Copter and a bronze for the P-38 Pumpkin Porter at the 2021 Brewski Awards.
Your experience can draw on the expertise of FlyteCo brewmasters Michael Bracco and Co-Founder Jason Slingsby, who will help you choose the style, select the ingredients, and even name your creation. Three to five weeks later, your beer will be available for your Brewer-fora-Day on-site celebration. If there’s any left after the party, it will be put on tap for the public to enjoy. Recent creations have included Hall Pass, a fruited Blonde Ale, Smooth Skies Oatmeal Stout, and Call Me Dragon, an IPA with Juicy Fruit gum.
FlyteCo’s commitment to the aviation community extends beyond its theme. Ten percent of their profits are dedicated to supporting the future of aviation through scholarships, donations to youth engagement programs, and veteran-focused organizations.

Some have referred to steampunk as “retro future” and this stainless-steel pocket watch fits that notion well. The side-sliding cover adds some freshness to the design and the Inner face includes gold accents and numbering. The reverse offers a quick peek at the mechanical workings inside.
Tell time and make a statement with this piece. ($65)

Get that order in and get ready to hit the town in style. ($1,025) -Sean Chaffin
FEATURED PAIRINGS
PERFECTO PAIRINGS TO EXPAND YOUR PALATE
by Greg Mays
EDITOR’S THROWBACK PAIRING
FUENTE DON ARTURO DESTINO AL SIGLO DE AMISTAD LAST DROP CENTENARIO TAWNY PORT
One of many tribute cigars to the late Don Arturo Fuente, the Destino al Siglo is a limitedrelease cigar with a flavor profile to match the rich heritage of the Fuente family. Prelight, the cigar is well-aged, rich and musty on the nose, and after the light, there are some incredibly deep notes of toast and rich cream.
As the Destino al Siglo progresses, the rich, aged tobacco is clear, and wine-cellar notes with prune and plum take the lead. The richness and complexity of this stick is masterful. There are nuances throughout, and the flavors work together well, like jam on toast.
A cigar as elegant as this requires an equally elegant pairing, and Last Drop’s Centenario Tawny Port turned out to be better-than-perfect. Syrupy and woody on the pour, the flavor profile of this fine port is exactly as hoped: jammy, prunes, sweet but not sickly. Pairings dance between the richness of the cigar and port, from the plum notes to the toasty cream, and the sweet balance between these two quality aged products is outstanding. This pairing is best reserved for an evening with perfect temperature, cool shade and a belly full of a rich, delicious dinner.

DEFINITION CIGARS CHAIRMAN
DEWAR’S DOUBLE DOUBLE 21-YEAR LIMITED RELEASE
Definition Cigars is a relatively new small-batch brand, founded in 2019. You’ll recognize their cigars’ beautiful multicolored woven bands, and all their blends are grown and made in Nicaragua. The Chairman is a meticulously crafted, hand-rolled gem with a rich flavor profile. With a medium-to-full body, it exudes notes of leather, cedar, and a subtle spice. Perfect for special occasions or moments of relaxation, it offers an impeccable draw and even burn.
I paired the Chairman with Dewar’s 21-Year Limited Release, aged in Mizunara Oak casks. Your firsts sips and scents greet you with honey, dried fruit, and oak on the nose; the palate delights with toffee, vanilla, and a gentle smokiness, leading to a long, satisfying finish.
Together with Chairman Cigar, Dewar’s 21-Year is a treat. The cigar’s leather and cedar harmonize with the whisky’s oak and smokiness. Take a sip, then draw on the cigar—the combination enhances both flavors. Sweetness balances spice, creating an indulgent celebration of craftsmanship. This is a sublime pairing and delightfully enjoyed after a savory meal while pondering in the cool evening air. I can speak from experience on this.
SIZE: 6.5 X 54
Casa 191 a premium cigar and lifestyle brand that captures the national pride and spirit of The Mexican Revolution through exclusive high-end products.
BALVENIE 25 SINGLE BARREL PADRÓN FAMILY RESERVE 45 YEARS (MADURO)
Padron is a cigar brand that is unapologetically Nicaraguan, with nearly all its production tobacco being grown and rolled there. The Family Reserve 45 Year was developed to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the brand and as a celebration for the work ethic of José O. Padrón, the company’s founding father. Some of the tobacco in this blend is upwards of 10 years old.
The flavor of the Family Reserve 45 is complex and rich, with notes of chocolate cake, and in particular, cocoa powder. Sporting an aggressive box press, the 45 smokes straight and the draw is easy and smooth. Smoke production is high, and this is a perfect smoking experience, well worth the premium price.
To honor a cigar like the 45, a Scotch with an equally rich profile is required. I chose the Balvenie 25 Single Barrel. A rare luxury, the Balvenie 25 is a whisky with dried apricot notes, and a long finish that’s all vanilla and caramel. As I continued smoking the Padron 45, the strength of the cigar ramped up, and the bold vanilla of the Balvenie was a perfect complement, as well as a contrast from the chocolatey goodness of the cigar.
A pairing opportunity like this is rare, and maybe it should be. It’s a happy marriage of two fine products that are some of the most remarkable examples of both.
MONTECRISTO SIGNATURE ESPADA EL CRISTIANO EXTRA AÑEJO TEQUILA
The Montecristo Signature Espada was introduced in late 2021, and it’s like a song from a supergroup: Rafael Nodal headed up the blending along with Nestor Placencia and the “Grupo de Maestros.” These master craftsmen are some of the most skilled and experienced cigar-makers in the world.
The Signature Espada is a bold-looking cigar, with three bands and a stout vitola. It’s bigger than both a toro and a robusto. The pre-light nose is sweet with finely aged tobacco and a touch of tingly spice. On light, fruit and spice take the forefront, burning perfectly with large smoke output. As you smoke through, honey and cedar become more apparent, and the strength holds at medium throughout.
I paired the Signature Espada with El Cristiano Extra Añejo Tequila, which brought in some similar wood and spice notes, along with an ocean-saltiness that helps to round out the flavor profile of each. As the Signature Espada approaches the nub, the cedar that blends with the woody-saltiness of the tequila is sublime. Overall, this pairing is in the medium category as both cigar and spirit are not overpowering or overwhelming. It’s a soothing pairing that delivers big time as an after-lunch pairing, and offers a crisp refresher to your midday.

DREW ESTATE LIGA PRIVADA H99 WOODY CREEK RYE
Drew Estate has a variety of acclaimed cigars in varying vitolas, of course. However, it’s their Liga Privada line that’s consistently awarded, and it’s arguably their most beloved offering to the cigar world. The H99 has been elusive for Drew fans until recent months. Fortunately, it’s currently a nationwide release.
The H99 is unique in that it uses a lighter wrapper than its Liga Privada No. 9 and T52 brothers, a very light wrapper for Drew Estate, in fact, who has gone all-in on maduro. Under the supervision of blender Willy Herrera, the H99 is wrapped in a hybridized Connecticut Broadleaf/Corojo wrapper that has to be seen to be truly appreciated.
On light, there are sweet earth and white pepper notes, with Asian peppers right on the forepalate. When retrohaled, there’s a lively toasted oak note, with cedar highlights. The H99 burns slow, too. I experienced over an hour and a half of smoking time packed in the toro size. Toward the end, there is a sourdough note as well.
I paired the H99 with Woody Creek Rye. The rye is one in a line of whiskeys from Woody Creek Distillers in Basalt, Colorado—nestled in the mountains in the western part of the state—just up the road from Aspen. Woody Creek’s Rye whiskey has that perfect rye spice you’d expect, with cinnamon and spicy wood notes, then finishes with some sweet vanilla.
Paired with The H99, there’s a sweet and woody quality to both sides of the pairing that mingles well—a spicy tingle on the tongue with a round, full finish. This is an extremely satisfying pairing that starts and finishes as delicious as can be.
SIZE: 6 X 52 TORO | WRAPPER: CONNECTICUT HABANO | BINDER: MEXICAN SAN ANDRÉS FILLER: NICARAGUAN, HONDURAN | STRENGTH: MEDIUM/FULL | MSRP (CIGAR): $16 | MSRP (WHISKEY): $45
CRUISING THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS
“LAS ISLAS ENCANTADAS”
by Kim Campbell Thornton
FOR CENTURIES, SAILORS AND WHALERS CALLED THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS “LAS ISLAS ENCANTADAS” (THE ENCHANTED ISLANDS). UNDOUBTEDLY, YOU’LL UNDERSTAND THAT ROMANTIC NOTION WITH A VISIT TO THE ISLANDS AS EASILY AS WE DID THIS PAST YEAR.
The Zodiac brings us in for a wet landing on Punta Pitt, and we jump out into shallow water. Our first greeters are the ubiquitous lava lizards: brightly colored males performing pushups to display their lizardly prowess and red-headed or red-throated females who have their own territories to defend.
But what we are really there to see are the three species of boobies unique to the Galapagos Islands: red-footed, blue-footed, and Nazca. Frigatebirds (which resemble pterodactyls), pelicans, Darwin’s namesake finches, San Cristobal cucuves, and seagulls round out the bird life on our first day of a week’s worth of activities from our base on luxury yacht Origin, one of three eco-friendly boats hosting no more than 20 passengers each on a cruise of Galapagos bays and beaches.
Ever since a 22-year-old Charles Darwin spent five weeks in 1835 exploring the volcanic islands with their unique inhabitants and geology, a visit that gave rise to his theories of natural selection and evolution, the Galapagos (called Islas Encantadas, or enchanted islands, by a 16th-century Spanish ship captain) have drawn adventurers, naturalists and travelers in search of the weird and the wonderful: marine iguanas basking on beaches until they’re warm
enough to enter the water and forage for algae; Galapagos penguins, the only species found north of the equator; blue-footed boobies, the strutting courtship moves of the males showing off their bright blue feet; and the largest living species of tortoise, some weighing up to 500 pounds or more. Other Galapagos denizens we met included nursing sea lion pups, brightly colored Sally Lightfoot crabs, and reef sharks and green sea turtles.
CRUISE CONSIDERATIONS
ALTHOUGH I LOVE being on board a boat, a cruise has never been my idea of a good time. But to see these and other amazing creatures, I was willing to sacrifice. Fortunately, I didn’t have to. A small-ship Galapagos cruise on 142-foot motor yacht Origin, operated by luxury hotel group Relais & Chateaux, was just my cup of tea. No casinos, no bingo, no trivia nights, no shuffleboard, no line dancing. What we did have were daily opportunities for hikes, snorkeling, kayaking, standup paddleboarding, nature tours on shore and by Zodiac, and impromptu Zodiac races with dolphins, all accompanied by expert local naturalist guides who shared their knowledge of our new reptile, avian and sea mammal acquaintances while ensuring that we kept our distance so as not to stress them.
The maximum number of 20 guests allowed us to get to know each other in a relaxed, intimate setting, enjoying snacks and drinks on the sun deck between activities, sharing tables at meals, admiring each other’s photos from the day’s adventures, and stargazing at a sky displaying constellations from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
ROOM WITH A VIEW
I SIGHED IN HAPPINESS as I explored our cabin on the first day. It contained a king-size bed, room-length picture windows, a walk-in shower with an ocean view, and an electric kettle for brewing my loose-leaf tea every morning. Inside the closet were waffle-weave robes, slippers, and plenty of space for hanging clothes. Apple TVs hang on the wall. We were told they were loaded with the latest movies, series and documentaries. I don’t know; we didn’t turn on the TV for the whole weekend.
While Origin and sister ships Theory and Evolve are eminently comfortable, don’t expect the stabilization you might have experienced on large cruise ships. Those prone to motion sickness would do well to wear patches or load up on medication before boarding. But at night the rocking motion will lull you to sleep on your bed, which is dressed in fine linens.
“
MEALS PREPARED BY HIGHLY TRAINED CHEFS
RANGED FROM FRESH SEAFOOD AND EXCELLENT BEEF TO ECUADOREAN SPECIALTIES.
”
LUXE LIFE
THE GALAPAGOS IS NOT A POLISHED DESTINATION. It’s known for its wildlife, not wild life. You won’t find motorized personal watercraft, ziplines, or beachfront hotels on uninhabited isles, and touching the animals is strictly forbidden, although you’ll be charmed by your proximity to them and their fearless response to your presence.
When we’re not gearing up to head to shore for a ramble—donning life vests, grabbing walking sticks, and lining up to be handed into one of two Zodiacs—we’re resting or eating. I looked at the well-furnished gym but felt no need to use it before, after, or between the days’ activities. We are greeted on return with people collecting life vests, spraying sand off our feet, offering hot chocolate, and announcing that delicious snacks await us on the sun deck.
Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style in the dining room, but dinner comes with menus, an amuse bouche, and choices of appetizers, main courses and desserts. Meals prepared by highly trained chefs ranged from fresh seafood and excellent beef to Ecuadorean specialties. Think “encebollado,” an Ecuadorean dish featuring fresh tuna; grilled octopus or tournedos of beef in mustard sauce; and tiramisu or passionfruit cheesecake. At a barbecue lunch on the sundeck we’re served fresh ceviche, including a lesson in how to make it. More than 50 percent of the ingredients served on the boats such as the fruits at breakfast and seafood at dinner are sourced from Ecuador. Vegetarians and people who are gluten-free or have allergies are easily accommodated.
Wines come from Argentina and Chile. All beverages are included except for cocktails containing premium spirits. Bartenders Daniel and Paul make a mean Negroni.
“ EVERY DAY IS THE BEST DAY, OUR GUIDES TOLD US. IT WAS TRUE. EVERY DAY HAD SOMETHING SPECIAL, FROM THE SAND ON ESPANOLA SPARKLING WITH MINUTE OLIVINE AND PERIDOT CRYSTALS TO BLUEFOOTED BOOBY PARENTS CARING FOR THEIR NESTLING TO THE GIANT TORTOISES WE VISITED AT A HIGHLAND RESERVE TO THE SQUADRON OF GOLDEN RAYS SPOTTED FROM MY PADDLEBOARD. ”

GRACIOUS GUIDES
OUR GUIDES GO ABOVE, BEYOND, AND SOMETIMES BELOW TO MAKE OUR DAY. I realized at the end of one hike, with the Zodiac already on the way, that I had dropped my phone somewhere on the trail. I asked Jorge if it was possible to alert other guides on the island to keep an eye out for it. Otherwise, I was resigned to losing it. He shook his head, asked where I thought I had dropped it, and took off at a run. He was back with it before the Zodiac docked.
On a snorkel outing, Fabrizio noticed that I was struggling to dive deep enough to photograph the scores of starfish lining the ocean floor. He took my camera and photographed them himself. They’re the only good underwater photos I have.
Snorkeling gear and wetsuits are provided, although we brought our own masks, snorkels, and hiking sticks. Onboard Wi-Fi was included as well, allowing us to share photos and updates daily.
Every day is the best day, our guides told us. It was true. Every day had something special, from the sand on Espanola sparkling with minute olivine and peridot crystals to blue-footed booby parents caring for their nestling to the giant tortoises we visited at a highland reserve to the squadron of golden rays spotted from my paddleboard. The only sad day was the one on which we had to leave.
LA VITA DI MARIO CARBONE FROM QUEENS TO CULINARY KING
by
“A tavola, non s'invecchia mai” is an Italian saying that means “At the dinner table, one never grows old.” It is said to remind people to take their time, to enjoy, to focus on friends, family, and, of course, the food.
Mario Carbone’s story is best told at his namesake restaurants—once you sit down, you’ll feel like time has stopped. You could be chasing the ghost of Ray Liotta through a Martin Scorsese set or sipping wine with Sophia Loren at a candlelit table. You’ve gone back in time, but not in a saccharine “let’s wax poetic about the good ol’ days” kind of way. Instead, Mario’s restaurants pack a power punch of damn fine food and classed-up theatrics. They’re the perfect introduction to the man himself. With Mario’s brooding movie star looks, full sleeve tattoos, and style that somehow manages to fall between Armani, the soulfulness of The Bicycle Thief and retro country club chic, he’s the kind of guy who’s hard to tie down as he continues to build his empire beyond his restaurants. He’s as much at home picking tomatoes in the fields of San Marzano as he is comparing tats and teaching Post Malone how to hand-roll mozzarella balls on YouTube.
“THE LITTLE THINGS ARE BEAUTIFULLY SIMPLE BUT IMPOSSIBLY DIFFICULT TO DO.”
It’s this charisma combined with his New York work ethic that propelled him from his family kitchen to gastronomic greatness. But before we delve into Mario’s empire of 40 restaurants worldwide, his line of jarred sauces, and his fashion collection, let’s journey back in time to Queens, where a young Mario Carbone is stirring a simmering pot of tomato sauce with his mother and grandparents. His culinary journey began here, at the intersection of three worlds: the refined elegance of northern Italian cuisine, imparted by his maternal grandparents; the hearty Sicilian flavors that defined his father’s side of the family; and his own lived experiences in New York’s Italian neighborhoods, where the spirit of iconic Italian films like Goodfellas and The Godfather echoed through the pizzerias, family gatherings, and neighborhood festivals.
In retrospect, Mario’s future in the culinary arts seemed almost predestined, yet, when he started out, humbly working in local kitchens, shucking clams, and being the sous to the sous’ sous (if such a title exists), his glorious rise to culinary icon was far from set in stone. Italian restaurants in New York were a dime a dozen, not to mention the number of Italian chefs trying to find space somewhere between the long shadow of gastronomic superstar Massimo Bottura and America’s first canning pioneer, a certain Chef Hector Boyardee, who’d been stocking American pantries with “Italian” flavors for over a century.
Mario did things differently, instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, he just made it better, sourcing the best ingredients and preparing them in the best possible way. As he puts it, “The little things are beautifully simple but impossibly difficult to do.” Mario’s innate talent led him to the prestigious Culinary Institute of America. In 2009, he teamed up with his CIA school friend Rich Torrisi and business-savvy enthusiast Jeff Zalaznick to create Major Food Group (MFG). Fifteen years later, Mario Carbone is not just a renowned chef; he is a formidable entrepreneur and the creative force behind a range of successful ventures that span the worlds of food, fashion, and beyond.
What started as a single restaurant in New York City quickly evolved into a global empire. He established Carbone in Greenwich Village in 2013 (formerly the legendary Rocco Restaurant) and has never looked back. The restaurant became a magnet for A-list celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio, Jay-Z, Rihanna and a slew of international players. Even President Barack Obama has dined at Carbone. This gave Carbone instant cachet and MFG’s mid-century Italian dining concept has expanded into eleven locations across the world. Arguably, none are quite as full-on as the hyped-up glam of Miami’s Carbone Beach. The restaurant’s brief is supper club extravaganza: Murano glass chandeliers, velvet everywhere, and Miami Beach’s glitterati dressed to the nines. This focus on style is something that Mario takes seriously. In 2021, he expanded his creative endeavors with Our Lady Of Rocco, a menswear collection created in collaboration with La Ligne. Inspired by the sartorial suave of 1980s New York City, the line gives new life to men’s fashion, which he felt had too long been relegated to the choice of sportswear or suits.
While it might seem unusual for a celebrity chef to dip into the style sauce, it all makes sense when you consider the cross-section of the brand and the man: Always elegant, a bit old school, and deeply connected to the way that all the pieces fit together. Mario’s talents extend beyond the culinary realm. He has a keen eye for creative direction, influencing every aspect of the MFG brand, from music and wardrobe to graphic design and even the china selection.
This holistic approach ensures that every experience, from food to fashion, is a meticulously crafted event. MFG’s recent addition, Chateau ZZ’s, exemplifies this spirit of glam exuberance. The first Mexican restaurant in the group’s line-up,
Chateau ZZ’s also features Members Only ZZ’s clubs in their Miami and New York locations. ZZ’s white glove services and top-notch cuisine give members a peek at what it might mean to live life Mario-style.
Despite being famous for running some of the most celebrity-packed restaurants in the world, things weren’t always so glitzy for Mario. Growing up Italian American in New York meant family gatherings around a “Sunday sauce” that had simmered for an entire day on the stove. It meant playing stickball with the neighborhood kids and eventually lighting up his first cigar with those same guys. (His long-time go to is the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2) It meant striving to carry forward Nonno Vito’s authentic flavors while putting his own respectful spin on those recipes.
With the recent launch of Carbone Fine Food in 2021, Mario can share some of those formative memories with the public. The Carbone retail line of jarred pasta sauces brings Mario’s famous red sauces to homes across America. With 13 flavors, including Marinara, Spicy Vodka, and Arrabbiata, these sauces are slowcooked in small batches to ensure restaurant-quality taste. Now available in over 24,000 retail stores and on Amazon, Carbone Fine Food has become the fastestgrowing center store brand in the country.
So, what’s next for Mario Carbone?
While he shows no sign of slowing down, he never forgets the essence of his craft—the joy of gathering around the table and letting time stand still.
Sunday at Mario’s house still means savoring the moment, tasting the perfect tomato sauce, leaning into a Mastroberardino Taurasi 1968 and a Cuban cigar.
As he continues to expand his culinary and creative ventures, one thing remains clear: time spent at Mario Carbone’s table will always be time well spent.

SUMMER WITH TRUE ITALIAN STYLE
ICONIC BRAND SPOTLIGHT ARDBEG SCOTCH WHISKY
by Audrey Pavia
Ardbeg distillery has been around for a long time—almost as long as the U.S. has been a country. Located in the town of Ardbeg on the northwest coast of the isle of Islay, in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, the distillery began making whisky in 1798 and hasn’t stopped since. Today they are known for their heavily peated scotch, renowned for its smoky flavor.
Cigar & Spirits recently spoke with Cameron George, the U.S. National Ambassador for Ardbeg, about what it’s like to work for this iconic brand. A former bartender and two-time Best U.S. Brand Ambassador nominee by Tales of the Cocktail, Cameron manages Ardbeg’s seminars, masterclasses and virtual tasting events.
Cigar & Spirits Magazine: Please tell us how you became affiliated with Ardbeg.
Cameron George: I was a young bartender working in a cocktail bar in Seattle when I was first exposed to heavily peated single malts. Ardbeg and Laphroaig were the first two heavily peated whiskys that I tried side by side, and I thought they were both magnificent. I started to learn more about whisky, which led me to more heavily peated malts, most of them coming from the iconic island of Islay. I was offered an opportunity to travel to Scotland and ended up working with Moet Hennessy, which included Ardbeg in the portfolio.
How rewarding is it to work for an iconic brand like Ardbeg? It's incredible. It’s been so fulfilling and rewarding to be integrated into the brand's story—to be part of its fabric and DNA. It’s a privilege to be associated with the brand's rich history and story. The history of Ardbeg spans over two centuries, and we have much more ahead of us.
Who would you say is the typical Ardbeg drinker these days?
Ardbeg drinkers are known for being diverse and nonconforming. They enjoy unconventional and luxury whisky experiences. The Ardbeg brand is for anyone who appreciates a company whose ethos pushes the boundaries of whisky making and the creation of unique flavor profiles.
“ THE ARDBEG BRAND IS FOR ANYONE WHO APPRECIATES A COMPANY WHOSE ETHOS PUSHES THE BOUNDARIES OF WHISKY MAKING AND THE CREATION OF UNIQUE FLAVOR PROFILES.”
The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Miami Beach is the first fullscale residential architectural project designed by Master Italian Architect Piero Lissoni. The expansive, seven-andhalf-acre waterfront enclave extends itself with elegant design, a selection of over 60 unique floor plans, exclusive world-class amenities, resort-style living managed by the world’s leading hospitality brand, The Ritz-Carlton.
The Residences are comprised of 111 luxury condominiums that range from one-to five-bedroom layouts and 15 stand-alone villas, with clean, modern architectural lines complemented by multiple suspended gardens, generously shaded walkways and a 36-slip private marina to create a unique tropical living experience. The property offers a half-acre rooftop pool deck with private cabanas and poolside grille, pet grooming facility, indoor and outdoor yoga studios, a private cinema-style screening room and a meditation garden. The world’s first residential art studio, generously proportioned social rooms, kid’s room, and a library further complement the sophisticated Ritz-Carlton lifestyle.
How does a new Ardbeg drinker discover your spirit? We encourage new and seasoned Ardbeg drinkers to ask questions and engage us on social media. The whisky-making process and the influence of factors like location and production methods is fascinating. Additionally, learning about the history of Ardbeg on our website and print media develops an appreciation for Ardbeg's unique and flavorful story. We encourage the exploration of bespoke styles of whisky that some might have previously written off.
Are there any unique anecdotes about Ardbeg that you can share?
The purifier at Ardbeg is a specific piece of equipment that is unique to the distillery. It sits off the line arm of the still and throws pieces of the distillate back into the body of the still to go through the process again. This is where the lighter and more floral characteristics of the whisky start to reveal themselves.
Ardbeg prides itself in tradition and authenticity. Has there been any feedback from consumers that's inspired you to develop new expressions?
We’re always looking forward. Yes. We have developed new expressions based on feedback from consumers, like Ardbeg Very Young for Discussion and Ardbeg Still Young.
What’s on the horizon regarding consumer engagement this year?
Our brand fans should keep an eye out for the Ardbeg Masters of Smoke Tour. Our goal is to immerse consumers in the brand’s world and educate them about the diverse characteristics of smoke in whisky.
How about the rest of 2024 and beyond?
Our brand is constantly evolving. We have the return of an iconic age-statement whisky and other intriguing releases like Ardbeg Spectacular and Ardbeg's Y2K. Ardbeg’s future will be fueled by the quest to create exciting new offerings from the distillery.
Wonderful. Thank you for giving our audience an insight into Ardbeg.
It’s been a great journey. Cheers!
HIGH NOTES, HITS AND LONG ROADS RILEY GREEN Breaks Big
by
More than any other musical genre, country has an emotional connection to place. The best artists bring us into their worlds. They give us glimpses of their hometowns and heartaches through stories that are as easy to relate to as they are to get lost in. Riley Green, one of country and western’s newest stars, does just that. His soulful tunes and authentic storytelling make us long for the simplicity of pickup trucks and cut-off blue jeans, faithful dogs, and long-lost loves. The spirit of the South runs as deeply through his songs as it does through a Faulkner novel.
In the middle of his extensive international Ain’t My Last Rodeo tour, the college quarterback turned country music star was riding high from his recent chart-topping hit featuring Luke Combs.
Riley sat down on stage with us prior to one of his recently sold-out shows in California, and we chatted about the highs and lows of life on tour, his creative process, and the routines that keep him connected to his Alabama roots.
the INTERVIEW
Randy Mastronicola: Our staff is jazzed you’re gracing the pages of our magazine–particularly the female staffers. Our readers are overdue for a country and western artist as well.
Riley Green: Thank you. I love your publication, man.
It's been an intense period for you given your 2024 touring schedule. Definitely. There's no off-season for touring musicians right now.
It's not like football. Not at all. It's a full-time job, but at the same time, what a cool way to be out there making a living.
You're living your dream. I believe you had your third number 1 recently, and that was with Luke Combs. Luke Combs is on a song of mine called Different 'Round Here. It was the title track on my debut album, so it had been out for a couple of years. But I went on a stadium tour with Luke last year, and the timing was great to hit radio with it.
Kismet. Did you think early on that the song was going to hit kaboom, or was it just like, "Oh, we’ll see..."? I can't say that I've written many songs that I just knew would be hits, especially on the radio. I try a lot of songs out at shows and see what the reaction is. Different 'Round Here was one of those songs that always raised hands. When I got Luke involved, and we made it into a single, it was just that much bigger.
I've got some hit songs that were never played on the radio, songs I wrote long before I signed a record deal. I just try to write songs that I think fans will relate to and latch on to.
You can see it at your concerts. I don’t even know what classifies as a hit nowadays anyway. In the past, you make a demo, you try to get signed, you put out a single, and hope it hits. That’s not really the process anymore.
I think a lot of that’s gone away because there are different ways to be successful outside of a traditional record deal. When I signed the deal, I had 25 songs already recorded. It was a little different for me. I had a brand, I had something that was working, and we just tried to do more of that.
I'm always fascinated by people who have wideranging talents. You flourished as a Division 1 quarterback at Jacksonville. Is there any connection between being an athlete and a music artist? Or are they two very different parts of you? I would never say that I flourished in college football. [laughter]
I was trying to be kind, man. Yes, I appreciate that a lot. [laughs] I think to answer your question plainly, the connection between sports and being successful in music is, for me, the accountability that I learned in college sports. Coming out of high school, you're an 18-year-old kid. You've been made to do everything you've done at this point in life, and you get to college and how hard you want to work is how successful you're going to be. In music, it’s that. I could play 30 shows a year. Nobody's holding a gun to me and making me go play these shows, travel, and be away from home. It's the motivation of seeing something that's working—our fans, enjoying writing songs, and being in front of crowds. That’s what I took from playing college football.
“I don't have a lot in common with the big city. I grew up in a small town in Alabama. The more often I can get out there, the more I’m able to write."
We’ve talked a little football. Now, I'm going to share a moment where entertainment and football rub up against one another.
Now, I’m curious.
When I interviewed Joe Buck, he told me that his pregame ritual with Troy Aikman is to take a little shot of tequila and get a little fired up. Is there any ritual that you enjoy with your band and crew before a gig?
We have a circle-up moment and a prayer before we go on stage.
That's wonderful. You guys go the opposite of Buck and Aikman.
I always try to get a little bit of time to myself before going on stage. Playing sports, there’s always a moment when you're getting the team fired up as a coach. You go over things, and then you just want to sit there and get in the mental space. Especially, playing quarterback. I think taking a moment to myself is probably the biggest ritual I have.
But now that you mention it–I do take a shot of tequila every night. But it’s during the third song, so I don’t get ahead of myself.
There you go. I had a feeling. I’ve found that the third song of the set is a great time for it. It just gets me through the whole thing.
That’s the marker.
To me, the most fascinating thing about you is Carl–your famous corgi. Aka Carl the Cowboy Corgi. [laughs] Carl's probably the most popular thing about me in a lot of circles. He’s become a very famous dog. He's a corgi-blue heeler. I found him at a buddy of mine’s horse farm in Arkansas. His demeanor, he didn’t jump up and bark, like a lot of little dogs. He would just be around you. He'd come lay there by your feet and take a nap.
I've always had labs for duck hunting. I have my lab Jazz back home, but I could never take her on the road. She's so active and she’s a big dog. Carl's a perfect tour-bus dog. He rides with me everywhere. He’s very, very popular with the fans. I think there'll be four or five signs in the crowd every night saying,
"Where’s Carl?" He’s got his own merch. He's starting to realize how popular he is, too. You can tell.
It's going to his head a little bit. [laughter] Yes. A little bit.
There's just something divine about corgis, having had one myself.
Yes, I’ve always had a good relationship with my labs, but the corgi personality is so different. Because Jazz is a trained hunting dog—I trained her from a puppy—you can tell when she knows she’s done something right. She gets enjoyment out of that. Carl’s a completely different animal. He’s got a side-eye he’ll give you. He’s got a little bit of sass.
Love it. It's entertaining, man. He keeps us all entertained on the road.
You have a rigorous tour schedule. But when you get off tour, and you need to decompress, what does that look like for you?
THE ESSENTIAL RILEY GREEN MIXTAPE
• ATLANTIC CITY (Bruce Springsteen cover from the Nebraska album.)
• BEHIND THE TIMES
• BETTER THAN ME (feat. Randy Owen)
• DAMN GOOD DAY TO LEAVE
• DIFFERENT ‘ROUND HERE (feat. Luke Combs)
• GET THAT MAN A BEER
• HALF OF ME (Thomas Rhett feat. Riley Green)
• HELL OF A WAY TO GO
I spend a lot of time on the road just thinking about little projects I can be working on when I get back to my farm in Alabama. I’ve done construction my whole life. We've always had equipment of some type. Riding around on a tractor, and clearing off some of the property, is very relaxing for me.
• IF IT WASN’T FOR TRUCKS
• I WISH GRANDPAS NEVER DIED
“I was from the era of burnt CDs. I’ve always listened to so many different types of music. We could have Tim McGraw and Tupac on the same CD."
It's a good disconnect because even just being back in Nashville, but off the road, feels like work to me. That's where we do a lot of writing. We have a lot of recording sessions and meetings. There’s nothing like that on my farm. The world moves a lot slower there. There’s one flashing light and one convenience store out there. My grandmother still lives a few miles from my farm. My entire family lives right there. It’s a really great place for me, not only to decompress, but it’s also where I get all the inspiration to write songs.
I don't have a lot in common with the big city. I grew up in a small town in Alabama. The more often I can get out there, the more I’m able to write.
We all need that safe place. You have a new EP out, correct? You covered Bruce Springsteen's Atlantic City Why that particular song of Bruce's?
I was from the era of burnt CDs. I’ve always listened to so many different types of music. We could have Tim McGraw and Tupac on the same CD. I had a sister who was 10 years older than me, so she was into Sublime and Weezer. My mom and dad were more classic rock. The Band, Marshall Tucker Band, and Bruce Springsteen fell into that realm with Bob Seger. That stuff was really before my time, but I just enjoyed something about that music.
Americana.
Yes. I think because we're in California at this moment, and I’m singing songs about my small town in Alabama, I think most people don’t know anything about the place I’m singing about. There was something about Bruce Springsteen’s Atlantic City that I felt the same way about. I didn’t know about the “Chicken Man” and the things that he was singing about. I felt something but didn’t know exactly what.
The Band’s version of it with Levon Helm was the one I really latched onto. I’m a huge fan of The Band. I think I could do an hour-long cover set of their songs. I probably did at some point. I played Atlantic City at shows for years, and fans just really made it an original song for me. It was cool to go back and record it and shine some light on it now. Playing it, seeing fans’ reactions, is always a love of mine.
We talked about Luke. I know you’ve collab'd with Thomas Rhett. Is there anyone on the EP that you’ve featured, or is it all you?
No collabs on the Way Out Here EP. On my last album, we did a song with Jelly Roll. It’s just tough to find the time. Especially, with me writing from a very personal place. There are some songs like I Wish Grandpas Never Died that are so personal to me. It’s hard to find a song that’s right for a collaboration when it’s something that personal. Definitely. There will be some more collabs in the future. This EP was just a lot of self-penned songs that were really personal.
What should we be on the lookout for the rest of the year? I’m constantly writing. We’ve got a lot of new music. We’re in the studio as we speak, cutting through the next album that we’re looking to put out in the fall. We’ll probably release some of those songs a little early to give fans a taste of the album before it comes out.
Sure. Tease it.
Like I said, we’ll be touring through Thanksgiving. Even when this tour ends, we’ll be on the road and catch you somewhere.
What’s your cigar moment right now? When do you like to have your cigar and relax—maybe pair it up with a little bit of tequila—that Zen moment?
After any show, it’s great to sit down by the bus and have a cigar moment. We do that quite a bit. After a good run on the road. I’ve got buddies that are into cigars as well. When they’re out with me, I usually try to have a box. We’ll sit around and share one and catch up. On the farm, I’ve got a little cigar room. I’ll say it’s a poker room, but we don't play cards. We sit around the table and talk and smoke cigars. It’s just a great way to catch up, and has always been a cool thing for me. That’s what’s so wonderful about cigars. I could talk about this all day, but there is that connection. If you’re by yourself, there’s a connection—contemplative. It could be a way to chill out or be with your buddies. Sit around and have a meaningful conversation, laugh, and be silly as well.
The cigar is sometimes a conduit, you know? It's got that nostalgic, traditional feel to it. My granddad only smoked cigars. It connects you to that back-in-theold-days feel for me.
Obviously, there’s no smoking allowed on stage as we’re chatting, but I do look forward to having a cigar with you one of these days.
After the show, we might step out and smoke one.
That’s a deal.
Postscript: And we did.

PARADISE IN YELLOWSTONE’S VALLEY HOOKED on SAGE LODGE
Nestled in the striking hills of Paradise Valley, Montana, lies the angler inspired Sage Lodge Hotel. The magnificence of Paradise Valley is fully realized in this multi-faceted hospitality experience—where fly fishing is far from the only activity. Pick your poison: horseback riding, hiking, biking, hunting, rock climbing, and cross-country skiing are available for guests of varying skill and interest levels. That is all not to mention the luxury lodging, full-service spa, and two restaurants, The Fireside Room, and The Grill.
For an adventure-based hotel, there is a wonderful combination of wellness and indulgence in self-care. Those wishing to get into the park early could return to the serenity of the soaking tubs before an afternoon massage. Or perhaps a morning of cross-country skiing would conclude with a single malt scotch on the patio, overlooking Emigrant Peak.
Fly fishing is at the heart of The Sage Lodge. The hotel is positioned near a variety of water types: still water for casting ponds, great rivers for floating, and spring creeks for technical fishing. The Sage Lodge angler experience is suited to all genders and ages wishing to try the sport on their own terms. It desires to combat an unapproachability
that traditionally accompanies fly fishing. The angler of all classes, all types, and all levels of experience is encouraged to experiment with the sport. Those who have never fly fished can enjoy an introduction and sampling of it outside of the confines of a traditional fly-fishing lodge.
Sage Lodge is positioned on the north end of Yellowstone National Park, claiming the only entrance to remain open to vehicular traffic during all 12 months of the year. In the cold winter months of January and February, guests are privy to fascinating sightings of rare wildlife, notably Yellowstone’s wolves. Animals move seasonally through the property, which lands at an impressive 1,250 acres. There is no shortage of land to go enjoy—the Lodge holds 300 acres on the Yellowstone River, and lodgers can expect frequent sightings of moose, elk and other animals throughout their travails.
The setting and landscape at Sage Lodge is dramatic. Whether it is the sun peeking through clouds or lights shimmering off the river, the stunning experience Sage Lodge offers is undeniable.
But don’t take our word for it. Book your stay at the Sage Lodge Hotel and find out for yourself. sagelodge.com

“I started my love affair with handrolled tobacco back when I enlisted in the navy. Admittedly, I smoked handrolled sticks that were kind of crappy, but it was a great way for me to kill time.”
Behind the Leaf STEVE SAKA FROM SCRIBE TO SEED TO SHELF
by Tommy Zman
THERE ARE A GOOD NUMBER OF ELITE CIGAR MAKERS out there that I’m pleased to call friends and colleagues. I’ve worked with many of these fine people in different capacities for years. Our industry ambassadors and I love talking about the cigars they craft, and many of these cigars are my cherished favorites. This leads me to Steve Saka.
I’ve known Steve for close to twenty years, back when we both worked with Lew Rothman at JR Cigars in New Jersey. Steve and I were valued writers for JR’s Cigar Magazine, and it’s been a pleasure getting to know him through the years.
Recently, I caught up with Steve, and we talked about his life and his progression through the cigar world. As always, our chat was enlightening for me.
Cigar & Spirits Magazine: How and when did you get into cigars?
Steve Saka: I started my love affair with hand-rolled tobacco back when I enlisted in the navy. Admittedly, I smoked hand-rolled sticks that were kind of crappy, but it was a great way for me to kill time. I started with one a week, then one per day, and my love for smoking grew and grew. I smoke an average of eight to ten cigars daily.
Your first big step in the cigar world was working for JR Tobacco.
Well, I first started the website cigarnexus.com where cigar lovers hung out and yakked about their love for lighting up. I didn’t want to get into the cigar business but in 1999, JR’s owner, Lew Rothman, saw what I was doing and contacted me about writing a cigar book. Well, we met and spent a great amount of time talking about everything but cigars. Lew took a tremendous liking to me and flat out asked me to work for JR. I was really taken aback, but I accepted and ended up working for JR for four years. And the crazy thing was that I was actually getting paid for doing something I had been doing all along for free. What really came out of this is that I honestly learned more about the cigar business than I ever thought humanly possible.
So, after four years with JR, you got offered a heck of a position with Drew Estate. That must have been unreal for you. I was also taken aback that Drew Estate wanted me to work for them and they offered me the position of president of the company. The bottom line was that Jonathan Drew needed someone to launch them into the “regular” cigar world after building his business with ACID. So, surprisingly, I accepted it. But I really didn't know where I was going to take the company and spent a lot of time developing ideas. But then...I came up with the idea that not only catapulted Drew Estate to a new level, but actually changed the way the cigar industry did business.
I introduced using Connecticut Broadleaf tobacco as a wrapper leaf which was something no one in the industry was doing. Basically, everyone looked down on Broadleaf tobacco, but I was well-aware of its capability of being a flavorful, well burning outer leaf.
I had no idea that it was you who introduced Connecticut Broadleaf to the top-shelf cigar world. What happened next? Well, of course, the first cigar I introduced for Drew was the Liga Privada #9 which exploded in popularity. It contains seven different long-fillers from both Nicaragua and Honduras along with a Brazilian Mata Fina binder, and a gorgeous 18-month aged Connecticut Broadleaf Oscuro wrapper that is dark and oily. It became a massive success in the industry and grew a huge following with smokers. Next in line, I created the Liga Privada T52 which also became a monster success. The difference with the T52 is that it uses a reddish brown, stalk cut, Connecticut Habano wrapper. Basically, stalk cut means that not only the leaf is cut from the plant, but the entire stalk is cut as well and hung to dry in the curing barn. Both the T52 and Liga 9 were loaded with flavor.
Now, after eight years with Drew, you admittedly got burnt out. Yeah, at that point I decided to leave Drew to pursue starting my own cigar company. But my contract stated I had to wait two years before I could do so. Now, Drew had spent time paying me off each month in a buyout, but when Swisher purchased Drew, they finally bought me out in full. And then I spent two years developing ideas for a new company and kept it very quiet all that time.
In 2015 your dream became a reality as you and your wife Cindy founded Dunbarton Tobacco and Trust, and it’s become an extremely successful company in the boutique category. Yes, it was a bold move. Of course, my first release was the Sobremesa, a delicious smoke that received many rave reviews. The meaning of the term in Spanish refers to the relaxing time spent after dinner when people sit around the table for hours talking, smoking cigars and drinking— enjoying each other’s company.
Now, the following year Dunbarton introduced Mi Querida which has become an incredible success. On a side note, the Nicaraguan meaning of Mi Querida refers to “a secret mistress.” And just a few weeks ago you and I got together to smoke the newer Mi Querida Black—SakaKhan 7.5 x 54—which lasted well over two hours. The flavors of chocolate, coffee, earth and black pepper make smoking the stick a wonderful experience.
Yes, that was a great night, and I can’t thank you enough for the smokes. Which cigars are in your present portfolio?
Well, we’ve got the Mi Querida, Mi Querida Black, Mi Querida Triqui Traca, Muestra de Saka, Sin Compromiso, Sobremesa, Sobremesa Brûlée, Red Meat Lovers, Todos Las Dias, Umbagog, StillWell Star, and the Unicorns. I think we’ve built a hell of a selection.
The company is doing very well and growing. Finally, after 10 years in the business, where would you like to be in another 10 years?
Honestly…I really don’t know because it’s not something I think about. I just concentrate on making the company and the cigars better and better every day. And that’s why I believe my company is so successful.

LITTLE PALM ISLAND RESORT & SPA
LUXURY, PRIVACY AND INTIMACY IN THE FLORIDA KEYS
by Audrey Pavia
IF YOU’VE EVER DREAMED OF HAVING YOUR OWN PRIVATE ISLAND but you don’t quite have a billionaire budget , don’t despair. There’s a place in the Florida Keys that will get you pretty close.
Little Palm Island Resort & Spa is a world-class luxury refuge located two miles off Little Torch Key, a middle Key less than an hour drive from Key West. Little Palm Island is a 4-mile square islet only accessible by boat, and is home to just the resort. It’s only accessible to guests and employees.
Guests check in at the Shore Station on Little Torch Key, just off Highway 1. As they enjoy their complimentary Gumby Slumber cocktail, which dates back to the resort’s beginnings in the 1980s, they wait for an antique yacht to pick them up the private dock and take them 20 minutes to the islet.
The yacht docks at Little Palm Island and guests walk along the pristine wooden pier past the bar and restaurant, to the thatched roof suites. Coconut palms sway in the breeze, and the island’s peaceful energy is intoxicating. Televisions, telephones and other distractions don’t exist here.
AMENITIES
When looking at the flawless beauty of this luxurious resort, it’s hard to believe that only seven years ago, in 2017, Little Palm Island was nearly decimated by Hurricane Irma. About an acre of beachfront was lost, and the original dining room was destroyed. It took two years to rebuild it.
Today, the resort offers even more in the way of amenities than it did before the hurricane. The suites feature a modern West Indies design, each with a wooden deck and views of the ocean. The Island Romance Suite and the Island Grand Suite also include a copper bathtub on the deck and an outdoor shower, as well as an exclusive white-sand beach with a firepit, hammock and loungers.
The Dining Room at Little Palm Island is one of the highlights of the resort. It features fine dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner inside the ocean-front dining room or on the beach. The resort’s executive chef curates the menu daily, and offers multi-course meals best defined as modern rropical cuisine.
The adjacent Monkey Hut is a full bar with a comfy lounge, complete with a roaring fire on cool nights and live, relaxing music.
Situated just outside the dining room, the resort pool is designed to emulate a lagoon. Adjacent to the outdoor Palapa Bar, guests can enjoy a variety of cocktails and spirits poolside, along with gourmet snacks.
For guests who want to read, play games or just relax with others in a quaint atmosphere, the Great Room is perfect spot. Ocean views from the second story and an Old World sensibility make this room a unique feature at the resort. The only television on Little Palm Island is located here, and is for viewing of special events.
ISLAND FUN
Little Palm Island Resort & Spa was designed as a get-away for busy people. But for guests who want to do more than just relax and gaze at the ocean, a number of activities are available.
Snorkeling and diving are two of the most popular activities for guests to the island. Because Little Palm Island is only a few miles from the Looe Key Reef, which is part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, it provides incredible snorkeling and diving opportunities just a short boat ride away. Snorkeling trips are available twice a day, while diving trips for the day or several days are available. The resort provides the boat and professional crew, along with instruction and gear.
Other options for fun include kayaking, sailing, seaplaning, skydiving, fishing, eco-tours and dolphin encounters. These activities are offisland but can be arranged by the island concierge.
For guests who prefer to stay on-island, snorkeling and paddle boarding can be done right from the beach, with equipment provided by the resort. And for total relaxation, the world-class SpaTerre offers exotic massages and soothing body rituals.
“A
STAY AT LITTLE PALM ISLAND IS AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE, AND ONE THAT GUESTS OFTEN CHOOSE TO REPEAT ON A REGULAR BASIS. AND IT’S EASY TO SEE WHY. ONCE YOU HAVE SPENT TIME AT THIS VERY SPECIAL RESORT, YOU’LL DREAM OF GOING BACK.”
NATURE
Nature is abundant on and around Little Palm Island. Guests who appreciate wildlife are treated to an assortment of creatures, including Key Deer, an endangered subspecies of White-Tailed Deer that live only in the Florida Keys. These diminutive deer regularly swim to Little Palm Island to enjoy the mangrove trees that grow here. Guests can see the deer wandering around the resort, and may find their small hoof tracks in the sand.
Birds are everywhere in and near the resort. Brown Pelicans, Cormorants, Great Blue Herons, Egrets and Ibis are common on the beach and just offshore. Some birds visit the decorative pond at the resort, and provide a treat to guests who enjoy seeing these species up close.
Iguanas can also be spotted on the resort grounds, although they are considered an invasive species in the Florida Keys. Still, for those guests visiting from areas without large lizards roaming free, seeing one of these green creatures hanging out in the trees can be exciting.
Guests who want to get a look at the amazing fish and other sea creatures that dwell in the nearby Looe Key Reef—including giant sea turtles and moray eels—snorkeling off a resort-provided boat is the best bet. You’ll see Yellowtail Snapper, Barracuda, Angel Fish, Parrotfish and Sergeant Majors among the 150 species of fish that live in this rare coral reef.
A stay at Little Palm Island is an unforgettable experience, and one that guests often choose to repeat on a regular basis. And it’s easy to see why. Once you have spent time at this very special resort, you’ll dream of going back.
