Introducing La Aurora 120 Anniversary.
For 120 years, La Aurora and the León family have cra ed premium cigars that stand on the shoulders of tradition. Now, this legendary family legacy and a new, innovative approach at our historic factory in the Dominican Republic have culminated in a cigar that is 120 years in the making – La Aurora 120 Anniversary.
With a cedar aroma, the first draw reveals smoky flavors of peppered cinnamon and anise. Sweetness then enters the fold with a sweet cocoa and creamy coffee bean, soon evolving into a smooth vanilla finish. A flavor ride to the finish, 120 transitions to dry fruit and rich tropical notes, with subtle hints of wild honey and rich earth.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE
DING DONG
I’VE BEEN AFFILIATED with Cigar & Sprits Magazine for seven years in an executive role plus a couple of years prior as a contributing writer and editorial consultant. I was offered and accepted the publisher title early this year, and it’s been an incredible ride to date. To quote Frank Costanza of Seinfeld, “I feel reborn! I’m like a phoenix, rising from Arizona.”
It’s been a hell of a year, and we’re only in July. Our loyal audience, new friends of our publication, advertising partners, cigar and spirits industry ambassadors and countless others have embraced my position as publisher with open arms. Molto rispetto and mille grazie!
July is an exciting month. We create timeless memories as we explore new vacation locales; we barbecue with family and friends, and we spend time lounging by the pool or beach with cigars and cocktails—and there’s no guilt about it. But all good things must come to an end. The bell tolls, we reach the end of summer, and we recalibrate as we make our way into the second half of the year.
Each July, The Premium Cigar Association (PCA) hosts its annual industry trade show, providing another opportunity to mix and mingle with new and old acquaintances before summer passes. Cigar & Spirits Magazine is an exclusive media sponsor of the PCA event, and this represents our commitment to foster the premium cigar industry in every manner possible. We strive to ensure that cigar lovers have the ability to indulge in their appreciation of premium blends, unfettered from legislation. Our industry offers immense appreciation for those who support brands, consumer events, brick and mortar, and other cigar outlets.
This July feels like a new year for me, too. The enthusiasts we reach and the industry I cherish have been there for me as I’ve remained steadfast in the evolution of our publication. We are confident at Cigar & Spirits that our audience will continue to seek us out as influencers for the cigar, spirits, lifestyle content and the events we offer.
George Harrison wrote the New Year’s anthem “Ding Dong” back in 1974: “Ring out the old, ring in the new. Ring out the false, ring in the true.”
Rest assured, the Cigar & Spirits staff is committed to each and every one of you. Feel free to reach out on social media anytime you’d like with feedback, a new cocktail suggestion, praise for a cigar you’ve recently discovered, a cigar lounge you’ve called your home-away-from-home, or a new one you’ve just come across.
In fact, you can knock on my proverbial door with anything you’d like. Ding dong. You’ll find I will always answer the bell. We hope you enjoy the photos and interview with Mike Tyson. He’s been known to answer the bell a few times as well.
Happy summer!
Sincerely,

WEIWEI AND ST. REGIS COCKTAIL COLLAB
THE ST. REGIS VENICE offers an opulent Venice getaway showcasing brilliant architecture and unique accommodations right on the city’s famed canals. The property’s Arts Bar recently ramped up the cocktail experience with a new drink inspired by global provocateur and conceptual Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. The artist returned the favor by creating an exotic and beautifully crafted artisanal glassware collection for the hotel.
Weiwei’s work has become a bit of a thorn in the side of the Chinese government. He’s often critical of the regime’s stance on democracy and human rights. Fans note that his works create deeper connections by spanning poetry, sculpture, and photography while shining light on the country’s real-world struggles for freedom and dignity.
The St. Regis and Weiwei collab showcases the artist’s lighter side with the combined efforts to meld cocktail and artistic glassware.
The Arts Bar at the St. Regis Venice crafted the AW Vision Cocktail as an homage to Weiwei’s Chinese heritage with the use of Baijiu rice wine. The custom-crafted cocktail and glassware is indeed an inspired project.
Blending art and opulence is traditional at the St. Regis. The hotel offers an avant-garde design combining modern interiors with its historic ambiance. The property appeals to those who appreciate art history. The hotel hosted Impressionist painter Claude Monet in 1908 and currently offers an artist-in-residence program. Additionally, the hotel commissioned a centerpiece chandelier from Weiwei. The White Chandelier is seen as a ball of light with glass vines twisting in great arches around each other, a unique take on the traditional architecture of a Venetian chandelier.
The Arts Bar’s AW Vision Cocktail honors the highly lauded artist. Baijiu Chinese rice wine plays a key role in the drink. Weiwei’s Berengo glassware collection is spot on—right down to the crab claw on the glass stem. Crabs have been a regular feature in Weiwei’s works.
“As the main ingredient we choose Baijiu, which is the national Chinese spirit,” says Facundo Gallegos, St. Regis director of bars and restaurant. “We create a pineapple and black pepper shrub to enhance the tropical and pepper notes of the spirit
and we add the Venetian Select to balance in bitterness. All the ingredients create a wonderful red cocktail that recalls the color of China’s national flag.”
Gallegos continues, “Weiwei’s famous sunflower seed installation in London’s Tate Modern museum gives us the inspiration to fat-wash the Baijiu with sunflower oil. This technique adds flavor and depth to the cocktail.”
No trip to the St. Regis Venice would be complete without experiencing the ambiance of the Arts Bar and the AW Cocktail— the story behind it is worth the journey. If Venice isn’t in your immediate travel plans, you can recreate the AW for your next night of cocktails using the recipe here.
-Sean ChaffinTHE AW VISION COCKTAIL
• 30ml Baijiu Chinese rice wine (fatwashed with sunflower oil)
• 20ml roasted pineapple and black pepper shrub
• 15ml select bitter
• 10ml citric acid
When crafting the drink, the St. Regis master mixologist team recommends that the cocktail is shaken and poured elegantly into the glass.
THE NEON MUSEUM LIGHTS UP VINTAGE VEGAS
A STROLL THROUGH THE NEON MUSEUM isn’t just a visual feast for the senses but it’s also a trip back in time. This is more than just a graveyard of vintage Vegas neon, but a bit of a Sin City Frankenstein—bringing forgotten signage back from the dead to delight eager visitors. The property houses signs from popular destinations like Binion’s Horseshoe, Fitzgerald’s, the Algiers, Stardust, Sahara, Frontier, the Las Vegas Club and just about every classic casino imaginable. Las Vegas junkies may even have a harder time recognizing some of the more obscure properties’ signs featured in the museum’s collection like the Jackpot Motel, Red Barn, La Concha and more.
The museum has been in operation since 1996 and preserves the history in a city that sees megaresorts get the wrecking ball on a regular basis. With major gaming corporations looking to move on to the next modern property, preserving some of that history isn’t always top of mind. That’s where the Neon Museum comes in.
“The signage itself is usually tied to the property,” says executive director Aaron Berger. “And it ends up going into the trash. So, we come in and try to meet with any of the executive team that would let us go through and find the right representation, whether it's an indoor sign or outdoor signage. We're trying to really focus on getting these casino owners to know that we're a resource to them—let us preserve your history.”
That’s certainly a worthy cause, but the collection comes across as simply vintage Vegas cool. The property features more than two acres of every historic casino sign imaginable. Looking for that Terrible’s Casino cowboy mascot? He’s here,
complete with black cowboy hat and Pancho Villa-style mustache. Who could forget those classic Vegas prime steak dinners? Check out the Flame’s sign, fittingly offering a bit of neon fire advertising prime rib and being open for diners 24 hours a day.
Day tours are available, but of course the Neon Museum really comes alive at night. Many of the property’s 250 signs once again light up the Vegas skyline. The Hard Rock Cafe guitar certainly stands out, as does the Red Barn’s neon martini—seemingly toasting the desert and coaxing in thirsty visitors for a quick cocktail. A Liberace neon signature also adds a nice touch, an homage to “Mr. Showmanship,” who performed at the Riviera for years and became one of the city’s biggest stars. Some of the property’s multi-colored monoliths haven't advertised a functioning casino in decades but remain in operation just as they did when beckoning gamblers of a bygone era.
Along with offering plenty of neon wonders, the museum hosts an artist-in-residence program for others to show off some of their own works on site. From 2019-20 famed filmmaker Tim Burton even presented his own “Lost Vegas” show with some of his own designs and celebrating his links to the city and its neon heritage. The Neon Museum still hosts two of his pieces in the Neon Boneyard that visitors can view during a visit.
Tickets start at just $20, and a trip is well worth the price. Spending some time exploring gambling history also might just save you from losing a few bucks at the craps table in the process. -Sean
ChaffinPIZZA, BUY THE SLICE
PIZZA IS ARGUABLY THE WORLD’S MOST POPULAR FOOD CHOICE , and it transcends all cuisine preferences. New York. Chicago. Boston. Neapolitan. Sicilian. Brick oven. Coal-fired. It’s all good.
There’s the classic Margherita as a start and end point for some and a bazillion other options for classic and non-traditional tastes. (The episode of Seinfeld where Cosmo Kramer chooses cucumbers as a pizza topping fits in the non-traditional category.)
Obviously, commercial ovens aren’t suited for the average home, but pizza ovens come in many smaller formats—perfect for the backyard or kitchen pizza artisan in you. Let’s take it outside or inside with four ovens you’ll want to consider for purchase.
OONI KODA ($599)
The portable Ooni Koda 16 Gas-Powered Pizza Oven is a stellar choice for those who want to cook their pies outside or on-the-go. It can reach temperatures up to 932°F, allowing you to cook Neapolitan-style pizzas in just 60 seconds. The Ooni Koda 16 is user-friendly and features simple controls and a built-in gas ignition. It uses either propane tanks or a natural gas line, which conveniently heats the oven quickly and easily. And its low-profile design is perfect for not cluttering the patio.
FONTANA FORNI ($5,023)
If you're a serious pizza enthusiast looking for an authentic Neapolitanstyle pizza oven, the Margherita Pizza Oven by Fontana Forni USA is an excellent choice. This high-quality stainless-steel oven comes in three formats: countertop, portable cart or portable desk. We prefer the portable desk option because it’s similar in size to a backyard grill. It’s a traditional wood-fired grill with Saputo stone surface that can reach temperatures up to 900 degrees Fahrenheit, cooking perfect pizzas in minutes. It packs a big punch for its size.
FORNO BRAVO ($4,950)
Crafted in Italy, the Toscana 80 Pizza Oven by Forno Bravo is a fine choice for anyone looking to invest in a high-quality traditional pizza oven. This oven offers traditional techniques and materials, and it’s designed to provide an authentic wood-fired pizza experience. One standout feature is its spacious cooking surface. With an interior dimension of 31.5 inches by 31.5 inches, you'll have plenty of room to cook multiple pizzas at once. It comes in a few styles, can be used outdoors or installed indoors, and has the option to use gas as an alternative fuel source.
MONOGRAM ($9,000)
The price point is high, but the Monogram Pizza Oven is worth the lira. It’s a built-in electric pizza oven that features a sleek stainless-steel design. It can reach temperatures up to 800°F and has a programmable digital display for precise cooking. This oven is perfect for those who want a convenient and easy-to-use option that's also energy efficient. It's also versatile, with the ability to cook a variety of dishes beyond just pizza. The Monogram is a contemporary oven that offers modern convenience with top-tier pizza cooking. -Dave Johnson
COGNAC AND CHAMPAGNE’S UNKNOWN COUSINS
ALL THE BEST THINGS in France began with an accident.
There’s the oft-told tale of the Benedictine monk, Dom Pérignon, proclaiming that he was “drinking the stars” upon his first sip of Champagne wine, which had accidentally been left to ferment until it transformed into bubbly goodness. Tarte Tatin, the rustic French cousin of apple pie, began when a chef forgot to put a crust on her tart and just plopped it on top of her apples instead. Roquefort cheese is simply the result of someone leaving their lunch out too long and returning to a blue-veined chunk of mold. (The first taster must have been very confident in his iron-clad stomach.)
In keeping with the French tradition of “accidental genius” we’ve recently explored two of the best apéritif wines you've never heard of.
PINEAU DES CHARENTES
Pineau des Charentes is a beautiful amber wine with a captivating history and a highly addictive flavor.
Originating from Cognac, in the Charentes region in western France, this fortified wine was created in the 1600s when a winemaker accidentally threw grape must into an oak barrel containing Cognac eau-de-vie. When the barrel was tapped into years later, a golden-toned wine with complex hints of Cognac was discovered. Despite the exponential rise in Cognac’s popularity worldwide, Pineau des Charentes has remained one of the region’s best-kept secrets. A classed-up version of home-brew, most small wineries in the region had a barrel or two of Pineau stocked up for family gatherings and special occasions but nothing for sale. This all changed in the 1940s, when the wine was given an official Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée label and started to be exported internationally. It remains difficult to find outside of France, but pineauacademy.com has a state-bystate vendor search function.
This captivating drink can be consumed as an apéritif poured over copious amounts of ice. Or it can be served in classic cognac glasses as a lighter digestif. It’s available in white, rosé and red variations, each offering its unique profile. The white Pineau has a fruity and floral character with hints of citrus, while the red Pineau presents richer notes of ripe berries, spices, and caramel. If you’re a lover of Cognac, but you’re looking for something lighter in alcohol, go for a trés vieux bottle. The aged wine takes on some of Cognac’s spicy complexity with a bit of sweetness that makes it an ideal companion for a smoke. Unlike lighter wines or brandy, it can hold up well to the rich mouth feel of a cigar.
RATAFIA DE CHAMPAGNE
Another lesser-known cousin of a famous French libation was born in the region of Champagne. Ratafia de Champagne, also known as Ratafia Champenoise, is produced in small batches by a few exceptional winemakers. This rare liqueur originated in the 13th-century as an after-effect of an attempt to preserve grape juice. It’s made by blending unfermented champagne grape must with brandy, resulting in a luscious and aromatic drink with notes of honey, milk chocolate, or candied fruits, depending on the bottle. Characterized by its golden hue, long finish, and intricate flavors derived from the region's diverse grape varietals, you’re in for an experience that is completely unlike Champagne. Yet, there is that same pleasing freshness underlying the sweetness.
Like Pineau des Charentes, Ratafia comes in several versions—white, red or aged. Serve it chilled, but not on ice, as an apéritif or pair the aged versions with cheese. All Ratafia will also pair well with fruit-based desserts. Sipped with a mellow bodied cigar, it would perfectly capture the interplay between the earthy, smoky notes of the stick and the sweet, aromatic profile of the wine.
In both the Cognac and Champagne regions of France, there is a saying that the wine that evaporates as it ages in barrels is “la part des anges”—the share of the angels. Follow the example of these drunk cherubs and don't limit yourself to the well-known choices. Ratafia de Champagne and Pineau de Charentes are rare delights that deserve recognition for their exquisite flavors and intriguing histories. These wines add a touch of elegance, setting the stage for a memorable culinary journey. So, venture beyond the familiar and discover the charm of Ratafia de Champagne and Pineau de Charentes, the best apéritif wines you've never heard of. -Molly Headley

PERFECTO PAIRINGS TO EXPAND YOUR PALATE
SERINO ROYALE MADURO XX SUBLIME HEAVEN’S DOOR WHEATED BOURBON, BOOTLEG SERIES VOLUME IV
by Greg MaysSerino initially sold “naked” cigars to a small group of retailers in South Florida upon its launch during the 1990’s cigar boom. In the past 20 years, however, they’ve expanded their distribution nationally and have partnered with the La Corona factory in Nicaragua, establishing their stellar Royale cigar line nearly a decade ago. For this pairing, I enjoyed the Royale Maduro XX, a toro-sized cigar with a very dark wrapper. Initial scents are chocolate and leather, both smoky and rich. On light, the Royale Maduro XX brings in some rich espresso notes with a lingering taste of toast.
I paired the Royale Maduro XX with a special-release from Bob Dylan’s Heaven’s Door whiskey line: the Bootleg Series Wheated Bourbon. The bottle features an original painting created by the music icon himself and this special edition is packed in a leather journal case. As with other releases of Heaven’s Door, this is an absolute delight to enjoy.
Bottled at 111 proof cask strength, I enjoyed this bourbon neat. The Islay casks they use to finish this whiskey are not overpowering and add subtle complexity to the flavor of the drink. Flavor notes are smoke spices and berries. It’s an excellent accompaniment to the chocolatey coffee notes of the Serino Royale Maduro XX.
This match makes for a well-balanced pairing, and I was able to enjoy them after a delicious lunch of Mediterranean food on the back patio, resting my eyes from all my screens and reflecting on a successful morning of work.

BRICK HOUSE CRYSTAL CHURCHILL ARDBEG HYPERNOVA
As one of the oldest families in the cigar business, J.C. Newman & Co. are renowned for the quality of the cigars they produce. It’s always a good day when I get to enjoy a cigar from their Brick House line. The Churchill I smoked was packed in a glass tubo—the “Crystal” presentation of their natural line. This variation is great for gift giving, packed in a box of 10 tubes vs. the more common 25count boxes that we see the Brick House line in.
The wrapper on this smoke is milk chocolate, and on light I was thrilled with the draw on this stick. Great construction is especially important when you commit to a larger cigar like this, and the Brick House burned wonderfully all the way through.
Other flavors include earth and a bit of spice while retaining the sweet chocolate profile as well. I chose to pair the Brick House with limited-release Ardbeg Hypernova, a beautiful straw-colored Scotch with all the power of Islay behind it. The familiar smoke and iodine nose leads the way with Hypernova, a bold and brash expression from Ardbeg. There are tasting notes of sweet smoke and lime, and after a few sips, there are some lingering woody caramel notes as well.
I found the two in this pairing to be superbly compatible, and the palate really lights up with the depth of flavors you experience with these two together. Ardbeg’s has unique notes of smoke that allow it to shine with the Brick House, and this is an outstanding pairing. I enjoyed this pairing on a warm evening in the shade and found it to be a laid back and relaxing time, and the long smoke made for plenty of time to enjoy, as Steve Harvey calls cigar smoking, “my yoga.”

EL SEPTIMO EMPEROR YAO MADURO HEAVEN HILL HERITAGE COLLECTION KENTUCKY STRAIGHT CORN WHISKEY (2023 EDITION)
The Emperor Yao Maduro is part of El Septimo’s 10-cigar collection dedicated to the world’s most sovereign rulers. The maduro version here is an homage to the legendary Chinese ruler known for being one of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors who reigned over 4,000 years ago during the Great Flood.
History aside, this formidable cigar blend features tobaccos from four different regions (undisclosed) of the world. This complex maduro is creamy and complex. There’s a zing of citrus along with the warmth of toasted cinnamon raisin bread.
The 2023 Edition Heaven Hill Heritage Collection Kentucky Straight Corn Whiskey is a 20-yearold whiskey comprised of 100% corn mash bill. As corn is the sweetest grain in bourbon, there was an expected “sweet bomb” of flavor, but it was surprisingly well-balanced and a nuanced spirit. There are deeply spicy notes here, complex and earthy. There’s a touch of sweetness on the nose, but the flavor profile is rich and filling. This is a case of a pairing that’s complementary more than mirroring: the creaminess of the Yao Maduro together with the bold and rich spiciness of the Heaven Hill’s juice. Together, they make an excellent pair while reading up on the great emperors throughout history. -Cigar & Spirits Staff

LA AURORA CONNECTICUT CHURCHILL 1987 RAVELLA EXTRA AÑEJO TEQUILA
While La Aurora’s cigars are recognizable for their iconic rainbow-colored figurado line of tubos, they also have many Parejo options on the shelves that are affordable and equally delicious. As warmer months arrive, I’ll be smoking larger cigars like the 1987 Connecticut in Churchill size.
The 1987 has a sweet tobacco smell with a smooth, flawless wrapper. On light, the flavors are creamy with cinnamon and baking spice notes. Many cigars in the La Aurora lines are mild-to-medium strength, and the 1987 is no exception.
Note that when you prepare to smoke a larger cigar like a Churchill, it’s critical to get a proper cut and light as the cigar may burn unevenly without it. I cut this cigar just a millimeter more than usual, toasted the foot with a 3-torch burner, and made sure to take upwards of 10 puffs while rotating to ensure a quality light. From there, no touch-ups were needed. Because this is a lengthy smoke, the strength ramps up a bit as you move past the halfway point. The creaminess remains throughout as does the cinnamon.
I paired the 1987 with Ravella Extra Añejo Tequila. The cinnamon and baking spice of the La Aurora was excellent with this 3-year-old blend from 11 Ravens—the makers of elaborate custom poker and billiards tables for some of the world’s most famous casinos.
A luxury product indeed, Ravella Tequila is aged in American oak, then bottled. Flavors include almond and vanilla with traces of smoke. When pairing with La Aurora, the sweeter notes of the tequila match superbly with the spicier and warmer cigar tasting notes. This smoking experience made me reminisce on a recent trip to Belize and the breezy, beautiful beaches (and cigars) I relished there.

LA AROMA DE CUBA MI AMOR CHICKEN COCK DOUBLE OAK WHISKEY
A famous brand from pre-revolution days, La Aroma de Cuba has been made by Don Pepin Garcia of My Father fame for several years now. An award-winning lineup with ornate and elaborate packaging, the LADC family has a lot of offer.
There is a slight box press to the robusto version of Mi Amor, which has a smooth and slightly toothy wrapper that’s rolled perfectly. There is a chewing tobacco aroma pre-light with overall sweetness on the nose. Upon light, a sweet and nutty flavor kicks in—like salted peanuts on vanilla ice cream. As you approach the halfway point, flavors become more coffee and leather, retaining a bit of the saltiness from the start.
I paired the Mi Amor with a whiskey I expected to complement its flavors well—Chicken Cock Double Oak 8-year-old straight Kentucky whiskey. Double Oak has a really interesting interaction with cigars, and I tried it with a few to see. This whiskey has some sweet notes followed by big woodiness, as can be expected from a double-barreled drink. However, when enjoyed with a cigar, it actually drinks quite dry and even woodier than sipped alone.
I found this made it a great companion to the Mi Amor, which brought sweetness and spice to the party while Double Oak brought spice and wood. These two made for a very bold smoking experience—almost like another helping of dessert in its richness. I enjoyed these together with a group of friends over a late night out and it proved to be an experience that everyone relished.

INTERVIEW MIKE TYSON RED HOT AND UNDISPUTED
byThe pop culture zeitgeist that was the 1980s. You had to be there.
The short dossier: Madonna, the ’86 Mets, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Brook Shields, Eddie Murphy, Indiana Jones, Michael Jackson, Ronald Reagan, coke, New York’s Limelight, London’s Hippodrome, Jean-Michel Basquiat, The Berlin Wall and a multitude of transformative people and events that defined the divine and decadent decade. And then there was Mike Tyson. “The Baddest Man on the Planet.” “Kid Dynamite.” And the everlasting, “Iron Mike.”
Mike Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion in boxing history when he knocked out Trevor Berbick on Nov. 22, 1986. Mike would subsequently defend his title nine times. But more than that, his fights were spectacles. The energy, the fervor was beyond belief. Mike became a god-like gladiator, and his penchant for blowing guys up before the fight even settled into a match, propelled the man, along with the myth of his invincibility, into rarified boxing and pop culture air. Far beyond any sports phenomena of his time, or maybe all-time. Of course, every hero takes a fall. It’s the bounces up and off the mat that defines Mike more than those devastating
knockouts. His controversial life has been chronicled in many ways over many years. The good, the great, the bad and beyond.
Our recent chat took place at Malka Media in Jersey City just after Mike finished his popular Hotboxin’ podcast. The podcast is aptly described as “Listen as the baddest man on the planet pours his soul into conversations with fascinating minds, celebrities and athletes in a studio full of smoke.”
The podcast is just one of a plethora of projects he has going in this redemptive renaissance. There’s the Tyson 2.0 premium cannabis line, apparel and boxing gear. And, he’s been co-starring in film roles alongside the likes of Sean Penn. All this makes for a breakneck pace of a professional life. More importantly than his red-hot business endeavors, his home life with his children and his splendid wife Kiki have placed Mike firmly in the sweet spot of life. That is undisputed.
“BOXING, BIG TIME, CHOSE ME. BIG TIME. ONCE IT WAS INTRODUCED TO ME, THEN IT WAS A WRAP. I WANTED TO BE MORE ACQUAINTED WITH IT AND PURSUE IT. LIKE “THIS IS WHAT I WAS GOING TO DO.” I FELT THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY IT.”
THE INTERVIEW
Cigar & Spirits Magazine: Our staff got pretty juiced when they learned we’d be meeting with you.
Mike Tyson: Well, thank you.
We started talking about the Mount Rushmore of heavyweight champions around the office. My assistant decided to take a poll. 24 out of the 25 put you up there. Do you want me to give you the dissenter’s name and address? [laughs] Actually, I dont. Those are the ones I appreciate the most. I appreciate the honest opinion.
24 out of 25. Not too shabby. Hey, Im overrated, man. Way overrated.
[laughter] Many would feel differently. Thank you.
For some boxing fans when they meet you, it's a very big thing. “This is like Mike Tyson, heavyweight legend.” Has there ever been anyone that you’ve met that you were just awed by?
That wouldnt be hard at all. Muhammad Ali. My brother Roberto Duran. He was a street fighter. Im a real fighter groupie. I respect fighters.
Obviously, they make your personal boxing Mount Rushmore. Others?
Wow. This is so hard. I would look at guys from different perspectives. I would look at Lester Ellis.
Lester Ellis. “The Master Blaster.”
Yes. George Foreman. Sugar Ray Robinson.
No doubt, right?
So many people deserve to be up there.
What about Jack Johnson, Rocky Marciano and champions of previous eras? Do you think those guys would be able to hold their own with current boxers?
No way. I don't believe that. Guys are just bigger and stronger. Much stronger. A different kind of human being—even though they trained longer and harder back then—the fighters today train smarter.
Just their sheer physicality, training methods, nutrition, etc. Right. The older generation fought longer than fighters now, though. Today, they get that money. One fight now, you get $20 million. You don’t have to fight again.
Isn't that just something?
A guy doesn’t have to be a better fighter now, just a big attraction.
I've spoken to people who come from a similar background who grew up in neighborhoods like Brownsville [Brooklyn] as you did. Point being, it’s not so easy finding the right path. We all have a calling in life. Did you choose boxing or did boxing choose you?
Boxing, big time, chose me. Big time. Once it was introduced to me, then it was a wrap. I wanted to be more acquainted with it and pursue it. Like “This is what I was going to do.” I felt this was absolutely it.
Interesting. That's my belief. But I know once I met Cus, he made me feel like I could do anything. [Cus DAmato was Mike’s trainer, mentor and father figure, and produced three world heavyweight champions: Floyd Patterson, Jose Torres, and Mike Tyson.]
Cus was your inspiration. Big time. He helped bring me along, to become a man and a boxer.
Did you ever think a troubled kid from Brownsville would have such a successful entrepreneurial career?
I know that Im in a position to help people now.
To give back. Maybe it’s a way of never going back?
I see it now. I see people and theyre like “Hey, what were you doing with this crime-infested guy?” I said, “This guy lives in the same building that I live in. His mother and my mother smoked cigarettes. They exchanged cigarettes together.” They dont understand that. Well, they understand, they just dont want to. I dont care how successful you are. You cant run from your roots.
It's just what's in your veins. I understand that.
You can come from the ghetto, move past it, or you can have the ghetto in you. Exactly. I dont care what Black, White, Red or Yellow—its just the personality you were born with. It’s just who you are, but you can change. This is how life transforms us.
“WHAT INSPIRES ME IS SOMEONE TELLING ME, ‘IS THAT ALL YOU GOT?”’
What inspires you at this stage in your life? You've come so far. You've had such a path. What inspires me is someone telling me, “Is that all you got?” In other words, “motivate me.” Exactly. 100%. “Look at your fat ass.” Like “Oh man, you feel happy? You feel good about yourself?” You cant inspire me with like “Hey, Mike. Lets go to the gym because youre not looking that great.”
Harsh, but it works?
Yes, youre like “Motherfucker, get your fat fucking ass off and go to the gym. Do you remember what the gym looked like, motherfucker?” That inspires me. I only want people to tell me the truth. Like the guy you mentioned who didn’t vote for me. He told the truth. Thats the guy I respect the most. He didnt go with the pack.
That 25th guy. Yes, I respect him the most. He was the odd guy.
Ok. I admit it. It was me. [laughter] That’s funny, man.
Circling back to the entrepreneur thing. You launched Tyson Pro. What is that?
It’s high-end boxing equipment for boxing pros, boxing enthusiasts. The motivation comes from a phrase that I live by, “Will-vsSkill.” It’s the ideology that discipline is key to success and growth, and that hard work is more important than raw talent.
“I WAS MISERABLE MOST OF THE TIME WHEN I HAD MONEY. PEOPLE THINK MONEY EQUATES TO HAPPINESS, BUT THOSE PEOPLE NEVER REALLY HAD MONEY. I KNOW MY JOURNEY WAS ALL DIVINELY WRITTEN TO LEAD ME HERE TO THIS PATH, TO THIS MOMENT OF INNER PEACE AND SELF-KNOWING.”
Nice. What items are in the collection?
Limited Edition pro standard gloves, focus mitts, hand wraps. I’ll be launching apparel as well.
Like most of us, you’ve had a life with high of the highs and low of the lows. Why do you think you’ve been given this life to work through?
I don’t look at it as a negative thing. Highs and lows are a part of any life. It’s relative to your station in life. But I know I have been blessed with an outstanding resilience and strength. Each low after every high has given me more perspective on myself, humanity and gratitude. Many think it was a low when I lost my money, but they don’t know I was miserable most of the time when I had money. People think money equates to happiness, but those people never really had money. I know my journey was all divinely written to lead me here to this path, to this moment of inner peace and self-knowing. That is priceless.
What would you like your legacy to be? Family man? Boxing? Business/entrepreneur?
I don’t look at my legacy as a thing I want it to be. I’m just me, a man, a student, a father or whatever label you want to call me. But my legacy is a personal statement for myself. People are going to view me from their lens whether it’s good or bad, but I can’t allow my ego to spend time caring about that stuff. We all return to dust, that’s inevitable, so a legacy means nothing because it doesn’t go with you to the next place after you leave here. So, for me being a present father, husband and friend is more important than an attachment to my ego, which is all legacy really means to me at this stage in my growth.
What would you like the man upstairs to say to you?
“You are a beautiful prophet for dying.”
We’re all just passing through. Thank you. Thank you, brother.
“I KNOW I HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH AN OUTSTANDING RESILIENCE AND STRENGTH. EACH LOW AFTER EVERY HIGH HAS GIVEN ME MORE PERSPECTIVE ON MYSELF, HUMANITY AND GRATITUDE.”

From the finest vineyards of Sonoma County to the fields of the Midwest, farmers provide the Ammunition for creating award-winning wines & whiskeys, but the relationship between these two show-stopping lineups goes far deeper than that.
Ammunition whiskeys are expertly-distilled and aged to perfection in precisely-charred American oak casks. From there, the whiskeys are artfully blended and finished in toasted French oak barrels that once held Ammunition Sonoma County Pinot Noir (Rye) and Cabernet Sauvignon (Bourbon) for a texture, flavor and finish unlike any other.

DOWNTOWN’S NEWEST HOT SPOT
MOXY LOWER EAST SIDE NEW YORK, NY
New York City’s center of gravity has shifted decidedly toward Downtown. Younger travelers in particular are less interested in traditional draws like Rockefeller Center and Central Park, and more excited to experience “living like a local.” To them, the prospect of delving into a micro-slice of the city, be it the Lower East Side or East Village, is more appealing than a Broadway show — which is still just a short subway ride away. These urban explorers need a place to stay, and the series of Moxy hotels developed by Lightstone in New York City over the past few years has served as their home bases for neighborhood after neighborhood from Times Square and Chelsea, to the East Village and Brooklyn.
In 2022, Lightstone debuted Moxy Lower East Side, a new 303room eclectic and stylish pleasure garden in the city’s most electrifying neighborhood. Inspired by the Lower East Side’s history as a crossroads of entertainment and culture, and its present-day role as an incubator of innovation, the hotel entices with endless amusements enlivened with the spirit of the absurd, among them, Sake No Hana, a modern Japanese restaurant; Silver Lining, a piano lounge; The Highlight Room, a rooftop bar; The Fix, an all-day café and aby Tao Group Hospitality. With interiors by Michaelis Boyd and Rockwell Group and architecture by Stonehill Taylor, the hotel’s design feeds the curiosity and dazzles the eye, layering references to the Lower East Side’s eclectic social history with the vibrancy of today. Cleverly designed rooms, tech-savvy amenities, co-working spaces, and flexible meeting studios meet the needs of the pluggedin modern traveler, all at an affordable price.
The Lower East Side is home to some of the city’s most cuttingedge restaurants, bars, shops, and cultural institutions, as well as iconic historic landmarks. The neighborhood is an incubator for the avant-garde and an arbiter of what’s cool in NYC. Moxy Lower East Side puts guests at the doorstep of all of the neighborhood’s attractions — and reflects the variety and vibrancy of the Lower East Side with its own offerings.

Behind the Leaf A MASTER OF THE CRAFT CIGAR MOVEMENT AJ FERNANDEZ
by Brian Desind of Privada Cigar ClubCUBAN-BORN AJ FERNANDEZ is a third-generation cigar blender. He picked up the mantle from his grandfather who was the architect of the San Lotano line established in San Luís, Cuba, many decades ago. Having grown up in a family of tobacco farmers, AJ honed his skills in cigar making under the tutelage of his grandfather. Subsequently, AJ’s distinguished himself as one of the most prominent figures in the premium cigar industry for well over a decade now.
Initially, AJ made his mark as a manufacturer of cigars for other companies like Rocky Patel. His Tabacalera Fernandez started out in a humble facility with six rollers. AJ’s association with the mega mail order company Cigars International led to the development of the Man O'War and Diesel blends. Fast forward to 2023, the Fernandez factory in Estelí is among the largest in Nicaragua and produces some 9 million cigars a year. AJ is widely lauded as one of the top-tier cigar-makers in the industry.
Beginning in 2003, AJ immersed himself in the local tobacco scene. He successfully melded his Cuban heritage with Nicaraguan tobacco resources, giving rise to highly acclaimed cigar lines such as the reinvigorated San Lotano, New World and
Enclave series. His portfolio expanded and received further notice through collaborations with industry heavyweights, and he secured ownership of tobacco farms across northern Nicaragua.
AJ has clearly been driven by passion, dedication and an unrelenting pursuit of developing the perfect blend. He’s elevated the standards of quality and flavor within the premium artisanal cigar realm, and his cigars have become industry benchmarks. Not too shabby considering he’s just 42 years old.
Recently, we visited with AJ and chatted about creating winning blends, pairing cigars and what brand fans should be looking out for the rest of 2023.
Cigar & Spirits Magazine: Was it always your goal to be the best tobacco grower in the industry?
AJ Fernandez: My goal is not to be the best, but to focus on doing everything well, day by day. I draw inspiration from different sources, such as my children and giving back to the people who make it all possible. Helping others is a great motivation for me.
Do you smoke other tobacco growers' cigars to stay competitive?
Yes, I do smoke other growers' cigars, but my biggest competition is always with myself. Each grower has their own signature, and I focus on maintaining my quality and creating a special blend that people can recognize as an AJ cigar.
How do you know when you’ve created a winning cigar blend?
I know when I make a blend that's pleasant for me, but that doesn't guarantee it will be a winner because it's very subjective. I rely on my team's feedback and only release a blend if they like it as well.
What is your top personal achievement to date?
My greatest personal achievement is my family and my company. Being able to provide for my family while
creating an international company based on effort and dedication is an accomplishment that inspires me daily.
What do you like to pair your cigars with?
It depends on the cigar and the occasion. Some cigars I like to pair with coffee, while others go well with rum, whiskey or cognac. The choice of pairing depends on the specific cigar and the time.
What do you want cigar consumers to understand about tobacco?
I want consumers to understand that tobacco is not easy. It involves a lot of hard work, hands-on labor, numerous people and families. From seed to finished product, creating a premium cigar requires discipline, proper fermentation, aging and construction. I would like to expose the entire process to show the hard work that goes into making a cigar.
What should our audience be looking out for in 2023?
I can't give too many details, but I recommend keeping an eye out for some great blends we're preparing to celebrate our 20th anniversary. We believe these blends will be successful and delight all consumers.
“MY GOAL IS NOT TO BE THE BEST, BUT TO FOCUS ON DOING EVERYTHING WELL, DAY BY DAY.”Brian Desind, founder of Privada Cigar Club, has built a distinctive platform for cigar lovers, offering exclusive, aged, limited edition and rare cigars. He dedicates his time to learning from cigar makers and deepening his understanding of the craft.

SOHO PRO TIPS
• As you may have noticed, these cocktails, while all named after boxing legends, are variations or plays off of famous cocktails. While the original cocktails are still recognizable, all it takes is a little change to make some different flavors and visual appeal to cocktails.
• When looking to get creative with making cocktails search for similar flavors but from different sources. For example, I swapped fresh lemon juice for limoncello and was able to bring a similar, but more in-depth flavor to the cocktail. -J.B.
