PUBLISHER’S NOTE

BALANCING ACT

“The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion.”

- James Michener

Cover star Giancarlo Esposito is the embodiment of that quote, as you’ll read in the interview in this edition of Cigar & Spirits Magazine.

Legendary soul singer James Brown must have bequeathed his moniker “The Hardest Working Man in Show Business” to Giancarlo. Giancarlo is an accomplished and in-demand actor who constantly juggles multiple projects. His work is play, and his play is work.

Speaking of play, our special travel section is unique in its diversity. Hawaiian adventures, decadent hotels and luxe safaris are all there for the taking. Oh, and a bit of cigar and spirits coverage, too.

Let’s try and balance life as we make our way through what promises to be a compelling 2024 and a challenging election season. Hard work and plenty of hard play will go a long way in fortifying us.

Sincerely,

THE NIGHT OWLS AND THE OBSCURE

BARS COME AND GO in a state of perpetual motion. It takes something truly memorable to make it past the rush of opening interest to become an actual destination. The immersive concepts behind The Night Owls in Lakewood, Colorado, and The Obscure in Los Angeles do just that by intertwining mixology with art and magic.

THE NIGHT OWLS Lakewood, CO

The Night Owls, conceived of by art installation masters and Prismajic co-founders Eric Jaenike and Jennifer Mosquera, combines conceptual and culinary arts to create an experience that transcends the ordinary. Located in Lakewood, an upscale suburb in Denver, Colorado, the cocktail bar is adjacent to Prismajic’s Shiki Dreams, which was voted 4th Best Immersive Experience in the Country by USA Today.

The nature-themed expo tells the story of Shiki, a magical yeti who protects the forest, through the works of dozens of artists ranging from sculptures and set design to technology that stimulates sight, sound, touch, and smell.

The adjacent Night Owls bar takes the concept a step further with adult-friendly “majical” cocktails, kid-friendly mocktails, light food, and rotating entertainment.

“The Night Owls is inspired by the natural world like Shiki Dreams, but we’ve also incorporated a sense of an outdoor European cafe,” explains Jennifer Mosquera, chief creative and cofounder Prismajic.

“It’s beautiful but also very approachable and organic, so it’s similar in tone and mood to Shiki Dreams but is different enough to have its own voice. It allows us to expand and explore the sense of taste and further our exploration of the sense of smell, which we do with custom designed scents in Shiki Dreams.”

The Sensory cocktail flight includes five 2-oz pours themed to awaken the senses in a specific order. Start the experience with Taste, a sweet and sour cocktail centered around Haku vodka, citrus and cherry. See gets its “majic”, as the bar calls it, from its shifting color achieved with Giffard Violette liqueur, butterfly pea flower syrup, lemon juice and soda. Hear goes deeper into flavor with Brechenridge spiced rum and ginger root. The sound element comes from culinary crystals that pop on top. Smell is exactly what one wants from a Colorado bar: Woody Creek rye whiskey, rosemary demerara syrup, orange bitters and smoked wood chips. Finally, feel will get you all tingly with its combo of mezcal, orange liqueur and pineapple. A spring equinox menu, which launched this past March, adds several fruity and herbal cocktails to the mix such as the Exquisite Equinox Elixir with vodka, sage-peach-vanilla liqueur, lemon, fresh herbs and soda water.

If you’re looking for something a bit more overthe-top than a cocktail flight, book The Night Owl’s Absinthe fountain for four to six people. The fountain dispenses ice water over flaming spoons topped with absinthe-soaked sugar cubes. As the water pours into glasses, the liquor turns from clear to opalescent. Magical indeed. prismajic.com -Molly Headley

THE OBSCURE

Los

Angeles

The Obscure was founded in downtown Los Angeles’ Arts District as a “pandemic project” by distiller Théron Regnier and illustrator Laura Hines. Unlike many restaurant and bar concepts, which are carefully crafted by branding teams, consulting firms, and F&B experts, The Obscure was created by a small team of out-of-work artists and bartenders who needed a creative outlet during the lockdown. They imagined a realm of fantastical decor and storytelling that would go way beyond the word “bar.” Imagine having a private invitation to an eerie movie set to sip magical potions while listening to tales both strange and spectacular, and you’re on the right track.

When the world emerged from isolation, The Obscure became the first fully licensed cocktail bar in California to be owned and operated by a distillery. Within its mysterious confines, it hosts members' events and guided cocktail tastings based around spirits crafted in-house such as “Rites of Fall”, a 100% American Chestnut-matured rye whisky released in partnership with the American Chestnut Foundation. A portion of the proceeds goes directly to the foundation’s efforts to restore and reforest the once-great species.

“Distillation began with pre-modern alchemy, so we have a lot of fun delving into the lore around that,” explains bar director Hope Ewing. “Theron and Laura spent much of the early days planning the mythos and aesthetic of the bar with this connection in mind, so we love playing up the intersection of history, art, and science with a dash of magic.”

Reserved tastings—starting at $60 for six drinks—are hosted four nights a week, with the other evenings dedicated to members-only events such as expert presentations on everything from the history of chocolate to introductions to rare global spirits.

While The Obscure promotes an invite-only atmosphere, that doesn’t mean that guests can’t get in. Simply text 1-213-513-7521 to reserve this spooky speak-easy experience. -Molly Headley

“ POLESTAR IS PROVING THAT ELECTRIC VEHICLES CAN BE MORE THAN JUST ECO-FRIENDLY TRANSPORTATION —THEY CAN BE WORKS OF ART.”

POLESTAR SYNERGY

Polestar, the Swedish electric performance car company, is making waves in the automotive industry with its bold vision for minimalistic Scandi design combined with sustainable mobility. With recent unveilings at prestigious events like the IAA Mobility 2023 in Munich, Polestar is proving that electric vehicles can be more than just eco-friendly transportation—they can be works of art.

One of the most talked-about reveals from the Munich Motor show is Polestar’s Synergy electric fantasy supercar. This low-slung creation is the result of the Polestar Design Contest, where participants were challenged to design a vehicle that embodies the essence of performance while prioritizing sustainability. From over 600 entries, three winning designs were selected. Polestar brought them together to create Synergy—a sexy beast with rounded curves that push the boundaries of automotive design. Inspired by the sleek strength of hammerhead sharks combined with futuristic touches, Synergy features hollowed-out details and a one-of-a-kind floating interior that undoubtedly commands attention.

While Synergy is certainly a showstopper, it is also just a concept car, meaning it is unlikely to make it into your garage anytime soon. For those who actually like to drive their cars, enter the Polestar Roadster, also known as Polestar 6, which will begin production in 2026. Polestar 6 aims to set a new standard for electric sports cars with features like an 800-volt electric architecture and a dual motor powertrain capable of producing up to 884 horsepower. To mark the occasion, Polestar has announced plans to produce 500 limited-edition units of the “Polestar 6 LA Concept edition.” These exclusive models will have a distinctive sky-blue exterior, complemented by a light leather interior, and 21-inch wheels.

With the first customer deliveries expected this summer for Polestar 3 and 4, and Polestar 5 and 6 set to be added to the brand’s lineup of performance EVs soon thereafter, Polestar is set to challenge other eco-luxury car companies like Tesla and Lucid.

And the best is yet to come. Polestar's vision extends beyond just making groundbreaking vehicles that look cool. The brand is also committed to creating a truly climate-neutral production car by 2030, proving that electric vehicles can be both sustainable and exciting. -Molly Headley

1800 TEQUILA X ARTIST DUSTIN YELLIN

Imagine if landscapes were made from dreams. Not the twee butterfly and rainbow dreams that are so often associated with the word, but something more akin to what our minds really do while we’re sleeping. They tear apart bits of associations and images, then collage them together with our hopes and anxieties to create some truly weird stuff. The way this psychedelic world might intersect with nature and technology is what inspired Brooklyn-based artist Dustin Yellin’s groundbreaking “Psychogeography” series.

1800 Tequila chose to honor Yellin as the creator for the brand’s 11th edition of the “Essential Artist Series.” The collaboration has resulted in mesmerizing, layered tequila bottles filled with suspended images that blend fantasy, psychedelia, and 19th-century taxonomy. Each creation maps a different transformed landscape, from a surreal volcano and ski station to explosions of botanical motifs seemingly overtaking human structures. When customers purchase a bottle from the series, they will be sent one of the six designs at random.

Expressing his gratitude for being selected as this year's featured artist, Yellin remarked, "1800 Tequila is an artist-forward brand that celebrates innovation, creativity, and culture, in a similar way to which I approach art."

The Essential Artist Series has become a canvas for 1800 Tequila to support and elevate emerging and established artists, pushing the boundaries of taste and aesthetics. Previous collaborations featured renowned artists such as Shantell Martin, Okuda San Miguel, Enoc Perez, and contributions from the Basquiat and

Haring estates. The collaboration with Yellin also champions emerging artists. For every bottle of the Essential Artist Series 11 sold, $1 will be donated to Pioneer Works, the non-profit institute founded by Yellin in 2005. Located in Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood, Pioneer Works is a collaborative space led by artists and scientists, which fosters innovation through the visual and performing arts, technology, and music.

At the heart of the Essential Artist Series 11 lies the 1800 Silver Mexican Blanco Tequila—a premium tequila crafted from 100% blue agave, cultivated in the mineral-rich volcanic soil of the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. Aged and mellowed in American Oak barrels, 1800 Silver Tequila has a spicy and fruity flavor palate, with notes of black pepper and prune.

The bespoke bottles from the Essential Artist Series 11 featuring Dustin Yellin are now available. -Molly Headley

JC NEWMAN DIAMOND CROWN JULIUS CAESER GEORGE DICKEL LIMITED RELEASE 18 YEAR

The Julius Caeser cigar, a distinguished member of the Diamond Crown Family, pays homage to the visionary founder of the J.C. Newman Cigar Company, Julius Caeser Newman. These meticulously hand-rolled cigars are crafted in small batches by the renowned Tabacalera A. Fuente in the Dominican Republic. What awaits you is a flavor symphony: an Ecuadorian Havana-seed wrapper envelops a blend of fine Dominican binder and select Dominican and Central American filler tobaccos, aged for a remarkable five years. The result? Bold and rich flavors that dance on the palate. Picture notes of crème brulée and stone fruit elegantly swirling in the air as you savor each puff. To enhance this experience, I paired the Julius Caeser with the Limited-Release George Dickel 18 Year.

From the quiet hills of Cascade Hollow, this George Dickel Bourbon is a true testament to patience and craftsmanship. Aged for 18 years in charred oak barrels, this bourbon exudes a mellow yet intricate character. The flavor profile unfolds with deep, velvety notes of crème brulée and stone fruit, inviting you to explore its layers. The mashbill—84% corn, 8% rye, and 8% malted barley—creates a harmonious balance. At 45% ABV, it's a sipper that commands attention. Paired with the robust flavors of the Julius Caeser cigar, this bourbon's mellowness creates a delightful contrast. As you lounge in a cozy nook, surrounded by warmth and good company, let these two exceptional creations weave their magic.

ARTISTA HARVEST

OLD FITZGERALD BOTTLED IN BOND FALL 2023 BOURBON

Pairing the Artista Harvest cigar with the Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond Fall 2023 Bourbon is an exploration of complementary flavors that enhance the experience of both. The Artista Harvest, with its Sumatra wrapper, Cameroon binder, and Dominican filler blend, offers tasting notes of rich cedar, baking spices, and dried fruit. This profile marries well with the bourbon, which boasts a copper hue and a palate of cinnamon, vanilla custard, and milk chocolate, and warm spices.

Lighting the Artista Harvest, initial puffs are honey sweetness and spice, while the first sip of the bourbon greets you with a vanilla and cinnamon embrace. As the cigar warms, the dried fruit nuances begin to dance with the bourbon's citrus and summer fruit notes, a great marriage of flavors. The earthy cashew and almond from the cigar find a perfect partner in the bourbon's musty oak and caramel sweetness, ensuring a smooth and balanced experience. The medium-bodied nature of the Artista Harvest allows the brightness of the Old Fitzgerald to shine, while the bourbon's 100 proof strength stands up to the cigar's complexity without overpowering it. This pairing is ideal for a relaxed evening, where each draw and sip provides a moment of contemplation and pleasure, reflecting the meticulous craftsmanship behind both the cigar and the bourbon.

BLACK LABEL TRADING ORTHODOX VARA CORONA DE ORO RUM

Black Label Trading Company has just introduced the Orthodox cigar, handcrafted at Fabrica Oveja Negra in Estelí, Nicaragua, a limited release offered to retailers who attended this year’s PCA tradeshow. Created by James Brown at Black Label, this cigar takes us back to the brand's roots, highlighting the strength and intensity of Nicaraguan tobacco. Imagine boldness with a symphony of spice dancing across your palate and nose. It remains balanced, revealing flavors of dark fruits, cherries, and raisins, finishing with a touch of star anise. The Orthodox is bold, complex, and a true testament to Nicaraguan craftsmanship.

To pair with the boldness of the Orthodox, I chose Corona De Oro Rum, a new release from VARA Winery & Distillery in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Crafted with locally sourced ingredients, this rum reflects the New Mexican landscapes that inspire its distillation process. Corona De Oro is a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, sipped neat or in your favorite cocktail. Paired with the Orthodox cigar we have a delightful contrast: the rum's smoothness against the cigar's boldness. Letting the flavors intertwine, and you'll discover an extraordinary pairing. Corona De Oro is available at select retail locations in New Mexico and soon will be direct shipping to select states.

Whether you're savoring the Orthodox cigar by the fire or enjoying this rum under the New Mexican sky, these moments are an ode to craftsmanship and the art of indulgence.

COHIBA SERIE M RESERVA RIOJA

KETEL ONE COCKTAILS: ESPRESSO MARTINI

The Cohiba Serie M Reserva Roja is a masterpiece that marries tradition and innovation. Handcrafted by El Titan de Bronze in Miami, this limited-edition cigar is the fourth installment in the Cohiba Serie M line, offering a new blend that elevates the experience. This toro is wrapped in a Nicaraguan Corojo wrapper, plus a Nicaraguan Corojo binder lies beneath that wrapper, while the filler combines tobacco from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. This gives us a medium-plus profile with notes of cocoa, cedar, leather, and nuanced spice.

Only 2,500 boxes of this exquisite cigar exist, each with just 10 cigars. The price per cigar is $29.99, making it a collector's gem. As you light up the Reserva Roja, you're savoring the collective expertise of artisans—a blend designed to deliver a memorable smoking experience.

Now, let's transition to a different indulgence—the Ketel One Espresso Martini. It’s got the smoothness of Ketel One Vodka mingling with the rich allure of espresso, all balanced by the sweetness of coffee liqueur. It's ready to drink, so no mixing —just pour and enjoy...though I added a splash of milk. I left my Ketel One Espresso Martini chilled in the fridge. Whether you're hosting a soirée or simply unwinding after a long day, this ready-to-drink delight is your ticket to elegance, and paired with the Cohiba Serie M Reserva Roja, you’ll enjoy the smooth marriage of cream, cocoa and spice.

LA FLOR DOMINICANA CAMEROON CABINET SWEET GRASS VODKA

The La Flor Dominicana Cameroon Cabinet is a boutique cigar that’s also handcrafted in Miami by El Titan de Bronze. This cigar boasts a 4-year-old Cameroon wrapper—tasty and naturally sweet. Beneath that wrapper lies a blend of Nicaraguan and Dominican long leaf, all held together by a Dominican binder. This blend results in a complex, smooth smoke with a toasty array of nuts and spices, with a rich, long aftertaste. Each puff reveals the artistry of the blend and is a true testament to the Dominican Republic's tobacco heritage.

Now to the spirit side of our pairing—the Sweet Grass Vodka. Crafted in Charleston, South Carolina, this vodka is continuously distilled for an ultra-smooth profile. Imagine sipping a spirit that captures the essence of the South: locally sourced ingredients, community-based values, and a touch of magic. Sweet Grass Vodka is a true labor of love and whether you enjoy it neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail, its clean, crisp character shines through. Paired with the La Flor Dominicana Cameroon Cabinet, it contrasts well. The cigar's complexity meets the vodka's purity, creating a symphony of flavors. Sip, puff, and savor—the perfect way to unwind after a long day and to celebrate life's finer moments.

LUXE LIFE ON SAFARI

YOU THINK “SAFARI” MEANS ROUGHING IT? THINK AGAIN.

SAFARI IS A SWAHILI WORD, derived from the Arabic “safar,” meaning journey. In Hemingway’s day, going on safari meant big-game hunting. These days, it’s associated with adventure travel and wildlife viewing. It can also be the ultimate luxury vacation.

In addition to elegantly furnished ensuite tents, fine dining, and personal swimming pools, part of what makes a safari luxurious is the opportunity to have your own private guide and vehicle. That allows you to spend as much time as you want observing courting giraffes, mating lions, bathing elephants getting into a beef with an invading rhinoceros, a cheetah stalking a young, unprotected wildebeest, a leopard in a tree dining on a freshly killed impala, or a parade of wildlife visiting a watering hole—without having others in the vehicle urge your guide to move on. It also ensures that serious photographers aren’t knocked about by others in the vehicle moving around just as they’re about to take that once-in-alifetime shot.

A private guide also caters to your viewing hopes and dreams. Tell them what you most want to see and more often than not, they can make it happen, thanks to sharp eyes and deep local knowledge of the area. If you’re ready to take the trip of a lifetime, we’ve rounded up six luxury safari camps for your consideration.

CAMP

OKAVANGO BOTSWANA

The Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a vast wetland system that’s home to an equally vast population of wildlife, including the Big Five–lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and Cape buffalo—and many others, plus more than 400 species of birds. Delta safaris are famed for water activities such as outings in mokoros—traditional dugout canoes—or motorboats, fishing, and guided bush walks and game drives. At Camp Okavango, located on Nxaragha Island and surrounded by lakes, lagoons and meandering channels, chefs cook to any dietary preference, and meals throughout the day include an early-morning snack before a game drive, a hearty breakfast, afternoon tea, Champagne sundowners and five-star dinners. Helicopter flights, a camouflaged bird-viewing area, a plunge pool and sundeck, and sleepouts beneath the brilliant night sky are among the other experiences available. okavangodelta.com

WOLWEDANS DESERT LODGE NAMIBIA

To experience the desert and help save the planet, it’s hard to beat ecotourism champion Wolwedans Desert Lodge in Namibia’s NamibRand, one of Africa’s largest private nature reserves and an International Dark Sky Reserve. Ten spacious tent-top wooden chalets with verandas overlook the desert. In the main lodge are two lounges, a surfeit of sundowner decks, a swimming pool, a fireplace, a tea deck, a library and two dining areas, although it’s hard to imagine having time to experience even half of these relaxation areas. Guides take guests on morning and afternoon drives in the desert, explaining how to read the landscape, identify tracks and spot wildlife, among them oryx, springbok and hartebeest; bat-eared fox, aardwolf and other small predators; and about 170 bird species, including the endemic Dune Lark. Enjoy a beer or gin and tonic sundowners at the end of the day before heading back to the lodge for dinner. wolwedans.com

TSWALU KALAHARI SOUTH AFRICA

For a luxury experience all the way, visit this enormous private reserve of restored wild area, home to many rarely seen mammals such as aardvark, aardwolf, bat-eared fox, brown hyena, meerkat, pangolin, rhino and wild dog, as well as black-maned lions, cheetah, sable antelope and more. It’s a brilliant choice for experienced safari goers because the opportunity for unusual and diverse sightings is very high, says wildlife biologist Bill Given, founder of The Wild Source Foundation, which sponsors research there on pangolins, the most-trafficked animals in the world. Spend down time in one of three camps spread out over grasslands and dunes: Motse, nine private retreats for two to four guests; Tarkuni, a thatched lodge for up to 10 guests in five bedrooms; and Loapi, with six luxury tents in the foothills of the Korannaberg mountains. The result is the lowest ratio of guests to space in a privately protected area in South Africa. Beyond wildlife, guests have the opportunity to view ancient rock art, go horseback riding, indulge in spa treatments, and spend the night under the stars, to name just a few. tswalu.com

LEMALA NANYUKIE TANZANIA

The Maasai escorts who walk you from your room to dinner carry spears to ward off any lions or other predators who may be wandering the unfenced grounds. The Eastern Serengeti’s Nanyukie Lodge, overlooking the endless plains, is a gateway to plentiful big cats, elephants and giraffes as well as the annual spectacle of the wildebeest and zebra migration. When you’re not saying “Wow!” to the wildlife, you’re probably saying it about your suite, which has a king-size bed with a view, a free-standing tub with a view, indoor/outdoor showers with a view, a private plunge pool with a view—you get the picture. SANCTUARY GORILLA FOREST CAMP UGANDA

If primates are your jam, then gorilla trekking in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park must be on your bucket list. Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, located just inside the UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a serene introduction to the lush forest where the great apes make their home. Guests wake to birdsong in one of eight ensuite tents set on platforms, providing beautiful forest views. Sometimes gorillas don’t wait for trekkers to come see them but visit the camp themselves as if in welcome. When you’re not on the trail communing with gorillas, hang out at the lounge and bar area, schedule a spa treatment, engage in nearby community visits, go birding or forest walking, sip craft cocktails around the campfire or dine on fresh, local, seasonal dishes.

THE MOST DECADENT HOTEL SUITES

AMSTERDAM, DUBAI, NEW YORK AND BEYOND

THE STAYCATIONS OF THE EARLY 2020S have been on the decline for a while now. In theory, they’re defined by cozy movie nights at home and the type of meaningful slowing down that makes us thankful for what we already have. While a bit more gratitude never hurt anyone, staycations often devolve into battles over the remote control, ruminations about how long ago that spider set up shop in the corner of the living room, and whether you should take time out of your “vacation” to dust. This is why global tourism is set to surpass pre-pandemic levels in 2024–we all want a bit more fantasy, more splendor, more extra, and a lot less ordinary.

Yet, if we’re truly honest with ourselves, not all of us are hardwired to Indiana Jones our way through the Amazon nor trek through a zillion Italian cattedrales. If your vacation vibe is more about hibernating in spa robes than extensive sightseeing, the hotel suites on this list will allow you to shut out the world and forget that the Eiffel Tower even exists. These “Suite-Scapes” are staycations on steroids—a chance to indulge in the kind of extravagance usually reserved for royalty or lottery winners. Worth every penny of the splurge, each destination is truly one of a kind, whether due to its architecture, bespoke services, thematic intricacies, or

idyllic locations. But it's not just about lavish furnishings or extravagant amenities. These suites offer something far more elusive—an escape from the mundane.

Let your neighbors enjoy their vacations attempting to fix a leaky faucet, while you're lounging in a private infinity pool and pondering the meaning of life. After all, what’s better than being home? Being somewhere with no responsibilities other than shutting off your phone, sinking under the softest sheets in the world, and waiting for the caviar to arrive with room service.

"THE BELVEDERE SUITE, ABUTTING MILES OF GREENERY, WILL ALLOW YOU TO ENJOY YOUR SLICE OF SERENITY ABOVE THE FRAY."

PARK LANE NEW YORK

THE BELVEDERE SUITE

LOCATION: Set along the curved belly of Central Park with sweeping views of greenery, picnickers, and street carts, you can’t get more Manhattan fantasy than this.

HOTEL OVERVIEW: Situated within a modernist building that has been embroiled in a preservation battle for years, Park Lane Hotel is just the right mix of Big Apple nostalgia and modern luxury. A status skyscraper is set to eventually replace the iconic 1970s structure, if the developers can ever get past the red tape. We suggest staying here, while you still can, for a magical bird’s eye view of this ever-evolving city.

The hotel is also a playground for foodies. Under the guidance of NYC restaurateur Scott Sartiano, three dining destinations await: Darling, a rooftop oasis on the 47th floor, where seafood towers mingle with libations; Rose Lane, a Parisian-inspired escape with light fare; and Park Lane Cafe with reinvented classics and quirky cocktails.

THE SUITE-LIFE: Perched on the 45th floor, this castle in the sky boasts 1,750 ft² of plush beds, swanky bathrooms, and a mini theater, perfect for binge-watching old episodes of 30 Rock and Seinfeld. In terms of design, think black and white marble, polished wood, and houndstooth chairs straight out of Mad Men. But then nature-inspired wall murals swoop in to bring you back to The Park.

There are certain luxuries that are worth their weight in gold. One of them? The sound of silence in nocturnal New York. The Belvedere Suite, abutting miles of greenery, will allow you to enjoy your slice of serenity above the fray.

THE EXTRA: Dial the ‘caviar hotline’ and Petrossian, blinis and Perrier-Jouet bubbles will arrive as if by magic.

“ THIS SHOWSTOPPER SUITE COMBINES JACQUES GARCIA DESIGNS WITH THE CINEMATIC CHIC OF STUDIO HARCOURT, THE LEGENDARY PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO KNOWN FOR FIRST CREATING “THE GLAMOUR SHOT” IN THE 1930S. ”

HÔTEL BARRIÈRE LE FOUQUET'S PARIS

HARCOURT PARIS SUITE

LOCATION: Located on the legendary Champs-Élysées, Fouquet’s Brasserie has been a mainstay of Parisian elegance since 1899. The hotel, which opened in 2006, extends this feeling of timelessness with a touch of avant-garde.

courtesy of Park Lane New York.

THE HOTEL: Oh, the stories these walls can tell...Hôtel Barrière Le Fouquet's Paris is a magnet for glitz and glam. From hosting the annual César film awards ceremony to being the location for former President Nicolas Sarkozy’s 2007 election victory celebration, Fouquet’s has both historical and pop culture panache. Every corner of this legendary hotel, designed by Jacques Garcia, embodies the spirit of Paris, but our favorite hideaway is Le Marta. A jewel box of a nightclub decked out from floor to ceiling in improbable but impeccable florals, where Drake once graced the DJ booth, and famed footballers and celebrities regularly convene over cocktails and les burgers à la française.

Fouquet’s also includes a spa, swimming pool, and fitness center. If you deign to leave your room (and room service), dining options include Le Joy, a modern gastronomic restaurant, and Fouquet’s Brasserie, where you can indulge in the kind of classic French dishes, such as escargots or beef tartare, that made French cuisine world-famous.

THE SUITE-LIFE: This showstopper suite combines Jacques Garcia designs with the cinematic chic of Studio Harcourt, the legendary photography studio known for first creating “the glamour shot” in the 1930s. Celebrities such as Josephine Baker, Clark Gable and even Keanu Reeves have been immortalized in their luminous black and white style. Guests in the Harcourt Suite can relax in a 1,938 ft² Haussmanian style-apartment complete with views of the Arc de Triomphe, a spacious terrace, private gym, walk-in closet (perfect for Fashion Week), and a marble bathroom.

THE EXTRA: The living room turns into a pop-up studio, where you can have your own glam Harcourt-style photoshoot.

FAIRMONT PACIFIC RIM VANCOUVER

LOCATION: Within walking distance of the downtown financial district, Vancouver Art Gallery, Coal Harbour and the SkyTrain, Fairmont Pacific Rim has all the convenience a traveler needs while also commanding unparalleled views of the harbor, mountains, and the city skyline.

HOTEL OVERVIEW: From immersive cocktail experiences at the trendy Botanist Bar to spa experiences inspired by the Pacific Northwest at Willow Stream Spa (we recommend the Canadian Wilderness Retreat treatment, which combines the concept of forest bathing with glacial clay masks and an evergreen scented massage), every aspect of Fairmont Pacific Rim reflects a sense of place. Service? Impeccable. The crowd? Fashionable, with a dash of Canadian charm.

THE SUITE-LIFE: The Chairman’s Suite, also known as the 'Rock Star Suite,' is a massive 2,250 ft² spread over two stories. It comes complete with a private elevator, Swarovski crystal chandelier, a fireplace in the master bedroom, and a spa-inspired bathroom. Guests of the Chairman's Suite enjoy exclusive Fairmont Gold services, including personalized butler and concierge services. From the breathtaking views of Coal Harbour to the private terrace overlooking Stanley Park and the North Shore Mountains, this suite isn't just a stay—it's a spectacle.

THE EXTRA : Our favorite touch is the sky sanctuary - a rooftop patio, featuring a gazebo, meditation pond, and fire pit with a Japanese minimalist meets Brutalist-chic style.

HOTEL TWENTYSEVEN AMSTERDAM

SIGNATURE SUITES

LOCATION: Hotel TwentySeven’s location on Amsterdam’s Dam Square offers guests prime views of the National Monument and Royal Palace. In a classical Dutch building dating back to 1913, this bijou of a hotel reimagines the noble bones of its location in a way that is equal parts intimate and maximalist.

HOTEL OVERVIEW: The hotel is the brainchild of Eric Toren, two-time recipient of the Hotelier of the Year Award. Toren brought together a team of talent, including Michelin-starred Executive Chef Tim Golsteijn, architects, designers, and seasoned hospitality professionals, to create an exceptional guest experience, which has resulted in a flurry of awards including Best "WOW" Effect for a Luxury Hotel and Best Luxury Hotel Sommelier Team Worldwide among others.

Entering the hotel feels a bit like walking into a painting, not the austere interiors of Dutch national treasure Johannes Vermeer, but more like the gilded intricacy of a Klimt. To this end, Michelinstarred restaurant Bougainville and Bar TwentySeven are decked out in cognac-colored velvet, damask fabrics, and sculptural chandeliers, with food and cocktails so perfectly presented they deserve a place in The Rijksmuseum.

THE SUITE LIFE: In a hotel made up entirely of 16 ultra-luxurious suites kitted out with things like handmade silk carpets, jacuzzis, and lavish wallpapers from Pierre Frey France, you know that you’ll be treated right. The maximalist fetish continues from room to room, but, in terms of theatrical design, our favorite for lovers must be the 646 ft² Rooftop Stage Suite. Set under the eaves of the top floor of the building, the room’s peaked ceiling is ensconced from floor to summit in gold with glass Sputnik chandeliers throwing out extra glimmer on a massive round bed holding court in the “cuddle corner.” To visit Amsterdam without ever leaving the room, guests can make use of the telescope for voyeuristic city views.

Need more space? The Imperial Terrace Suite has 2,637 ft² of living space including a massive outdoor terrace, three en-suite bedrooms, a dining room, living room, bar, rain showers and a jacuzzi.

THE EXTRA: The hotel offers an exceptional concierge service, crafting detailed personal itineraries for guests to experience the best of Amsterdam. From arranging helicopter tours to 3-star Michelin restaurants in Provence Zeeland to private boat tours in classic salon boats with a personal captain, or luxurious Mercedes S Class rides with a personal driver, the hotel ensures every guest's desires are fulfilled.

CLARIDGE'S HOTEL, LONDON

THE PENTHOUSE

LOCATION: In London’s posh Mayfair District, surrounded by the greenery of Hyde Park and just a few steps from the city's most fabulous shopping spots, it’s impossible to miss this Art Deco landmark that regally gazes over the intersection of Brook St. and Davies St.

HOTEL OVERVIEW:

Since its inception in 1856, this English institution has earned a reputation as the go-to spot for art deco charm and impeccable service. Go back in time to the 1940s when the Kings of Greece, Norway and Yugoslavia used the hotel as a refuge during the war. Fast-forward to the ‘50s to sip martinis with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn or perhaps to the early aughts to party in style at Kate Moss’s 30th birthday.

But Claridge’s isn't just about basking in past glory—it's about embracing a stylish future. Every corner has a story to tell, from collaborations with renowned designers like Veere Grenney and Diane von Furstenburg to modern art deco makeovers by Thierry Despont, the hotel is constantly evolving.

Feeling peckish? There’s a slew of places to get your dining and drinks on, including two of our favorites - L'Epicerie, which specializes in culinary theatrics, and The Fumoir, a den of drink since 1929. Spa treatments at Claridge’s Spa are de rigueur for hang-over recovery the next morning.

THE SUITE-LIFE: One glance at the sky-skimming sanctuary perched atop Claridge’s is all it takes to understand why The Penthouse is London’s most expensive suite.

This airy abode, spanning 16,145 ft² of indoor and outdoor space, boasts a glass-walled turret, three private terraces, a private wine cellar, a fitness garden pavilion, four bedrooms, and panoramic views of London that you can take in from your heated hydrotherapy pool. The suite also includes the world's largest private collection of Damien Hirst artworks.

THE EXTRA: Have you ever imagined that if only you had a grand piano, you might discover you could belt it out like Elton John or croon like John Legend? There’s no better place to test your talent than in the penthouse piano pavilion. An art piece, the space is crafted like a glass and copper music box with perfect acoustics.

“ THE MIAMI BEACH EDITION MANAGES TO CREATE BOUTIQUE INTIMACY WITH AN EXPANSIVE RESORT FEEL. ”

MIAMI BEACH EDITION THE BUNGALOW PENTHOUSE

LOCATION: Smack in the center of Miami Beach, the hotel offers private access to the beach and the members-only beach club, as well as two landscaped pools - perfect for those who prefer their ocean views sans sand. Bass Museum and Art Basel are close-by, as well as South Beach’s Lincoln Rd.

HOTEL OVERVIEW: The Miami Beach EDITION manages to create boutique intimacy with an expansive resort feel. Dining/ entertainment options, curated by Michelin-starred Chef JeanGeorges Vongerichten, take the hotel’s minimal vibe in a different direction with the grandiose Matador Room and Bar, inspired by 1940s South America.

The hotel also includes a range of other eateries and amenities like a luxury spa, fitness center, and a boutique filled with unique limited edition finds.

THE SUITE-LIFE: Your first glimpse of your (sadly temporary) new digs will be the serpentine exterior stairwell that connects bi-level balconies spanning 1,900 ft². You might wonder why you would need so much terrace space when you have miles of beach in front of you, but that’s the wrong question. The better question is whether you’ll even decide to put on a swimsuit, or if you’ll float au naturel in your personal plunge pool to avoid the tan lines.

The 688 ft² of interior space is all about clean lines and zen-ifying colors, with a luxurious marble bathroom featuring an oversized soaking tub, an enclosed rainforest shower, and custom Le Labo amenities.

THE EXTRA: For some offbeat fun, head to the Basement Bowl, where you can choose between bowling or ice skating with a disco vibe.

ATLANTIS THE ROYAL, DUBAI

THE ROYAL MANSION

LOCATION:On the man-made Palm Jumeirah Island archipelago in Dubai, Atlantis the Royal has incredible views over the Arabian Sea and Dubai’s skyline.

HOTEL OVERVIEW: If Atlantis Royal had a mantra, it would be 'go big or go home.' Designed by Kohn Pederson Fox Associates (KPF), this architectural marvel is Jenga like you’ve never played it before. Divided into two distinct towers, the hotel’s daring construction techniques result in a mind-bending stacked modernist design. The $1.6 billion development spans 43 stories and six towers connected by a sky bridge.

It’s the location of the first Nobu beach club, a debut bar by chef Heston Blumenthal, a dozen other dining options, many of them Michelin-starred, several nightclubs and a rooftop infinity pool that seems to cascade over the edge of the building. The resort also contains the largest jellyfish aquarium in the world, a fire-breathing water fountain, and larger than life collabs with fashion icons like Louis Vuitton and Atlantis: Dolce & Gabbana.

THE SUITE-LIFE: The palatial Royal Mansion spans 12,141 ft² and is decked out in plush furnishings and extras fit for a queen. Queen B that is. When the hotel opened in 2023, Beyonce slept in this very penthouse and performed in jewelry worth more than most people's homes. Now, mere mortals like us can experience the splendor firsthand, albeit for a princely sum.

The suite includes a private entrance to the two-level, four-bedroom penthouse equipped with a steam room, an expansive terrace, an entertainment room, a library, bar, and ultralux bathrooms with Hermès products to boot. Take a dip in the shimmering infinity pool, dine al fresco in the outdoor kitchen, or opt for a more intimate affair in the lavish dining room seating 12.

THE EXTRA: For youth seekers, the hotel includes the AEON Clinic, a center for anti-aging, where guests can take advantage of a menu of injectables, skin rejuvenation, and even hair loss treatments.

SMOKIN’ ON THE HIGH SEAS SUMMER CIGAR, WINE AND SPIRITS CRUISES

A

CRUISE CAN BE THE ULTIMATE GETAWAY with the soft gentle breezes of the open ocean, brilliant views, excellent cuisine, and captivating ports of call. Throw in some high-end cigars, wine tasting, and fine spirits, and the trip itinerary just got even better.

Cigar cruises allow stogie lovers to test out new smokes, connect with fellow aficionados, share some drinks, and generally just have a great time. Some cruises cater specifically to cigar smokers with some fine wine and spirits mixed in. Ready to plan that summer or fall getaway? Here are some cruise options to put on the list of possibilities.

MSC CRUISES

RAPID DEPLOYMENT CIGARS CRUISE

This is the perfect getaway to combine a love of smokes and fine wines. The debut event was set for April 16-21 on the MSC Divina, but organizers are already planning another voyage next year. You should pencil the cruise in for 2025 if you missed out this year. The cruise events kick off with a VIP pre-cruise “Cigar Poker Run” in Miami with plenty of sticks and prizes. A second pre-cruise event includes a visit to the country’s southernmost winery–tasting some unique vintages that include guava, starfruit, passionfruit, and more. The trip then heads to Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas where cruisers can kick back in the former home of pirates like Charles Vane and Blackbeard. A cigar rolling lesson is on tap at Graycliff Cigar Company and a rum tasting at John Watling’s Distillery. The cruise is founded by military veterans and offers a pro-military environment.

JOKES & SMOKES (PRINCESS CRUISES)

Combine plenty of laughs and a love of cigars with this annual event. Jokes & Smokes bills itself as the largest “cigar event at sea” with seven nights of non-stop cigar parties, comedy, games, and more. This year’s event embarks from Fort Lauderdale on July 20 with stops in Puerto Rico, Grand Turks, and the Dominican Republic before returning to port on July 27. Want just a bit more? The fun kicks off on July 19 with a special pre-cruise party. Bring a torch and big sense of humor. jokesnsmokes.com

SEADREAM YACHT CLUB WINE CRUISE

Have smokes, will travel. Ditch the mega-ships for a “boutique cruise” aboard the SeaDream I and II. Each 344-foot ship features housing for only 112 guests and provides a more intimate and personalized experience immersing guests into the world of wine. The SeaDream wine director Martin Arentz looks to enhance food and wine pairing knowledge—and a stogie can make this pair a trifecta. Check out picturesque Mediterranean ports, visit world-renowned wineries, and take in other wine-related yachting land adventures. Head out on other shore excursions you might find on other cruises as well. luxuryonly.com

ESSENCE GRAND CRUISES

HẠ LONG BAY, VIETNAM

If money is no object, why not create a cruise for your own cigar-loving crew? Essence Grand allows world travelers to host their own multi-day get-together on a modern super cruise ship in Ha Long Bay. Located in northeastern Vietnam, this World Heritage site and popular travel destination features brilliant waters featuring a group of 1,600 limestone monolithic islands covered with thick jungle vegetation. Hạ Long means “descending dragon” and the islands look like the back of a dragon lurking beneath the surface of the water. The onboard Voyage Cigar and Wine Lounge is the perfect way to unwind with some of the world’s best selections. essencecruises.vn

There’s a lot to experience from this cigar culture voyage. In Key West, expect a factory tour with information on the region’s tobacco history, wrapping, blends, and more. The experience includes a cigar and complimentary Cuban espresso. The Bimini stop includes a private beach club, pool party, and late-night bonfire. Each cruise goer receives a $300 bar credit for that perfect glass of wine, beer, or cocktail–which can also be used at the beach club. wetravel.com

AMA WATERWAYS

WINE RIVER CRUISES

Looking for a European vacation (minus the Griswold experience)? Pack up your own cigars and visit some of Europe’s most important wine regions with a river cruise. Each AMA excursion includes an enthusiastic sommelier to offer recommendations and insight on the winemaking process in old world Europe. Hop aboard and get ready for specially curated wine tastings, visits to historic cellars and vineyards, and more. This may not necessarily be a “cigar cruise,” but bring those smokes along and maybe even purchase a few on shore. Wine and cigars can be the perfect combination.

TEQUILA CABAL

THE GROWTH OF A NOBLE SPIRIT

“CLASS IS EARNED, NEVER PURCHASED.” These are the words of CEO and founder Everado Gonzalez of Tequila Cabal.

When we sat down to speak with Everado, we learned the meaning of the Spanish word “cabal,” and how important it is to the integrity of the emerging brand. Cabal refers to diligence, sincerity of word and consideration of others. Cabal is nobility by way of action for Everado and generations of agave farmers at home in Mexico. “It’s how we interpret class. It’s earned each day through our actions."

The culture of Jalisco, Mexico, is the original culture of tequila. It’s also home to Campo Cabal’s agave fields, where the family agave harvesters work meticulously through a six-year process in developing the tequila.

The final tequila product is forfeited if the farmers don’t pay constant attention throughout the process. In order to do right by the agave and the tequila, the core diligence of the Tequila Cabal culture is crucial. Everado compares this to raising horses. “To grow into a noble steed, a horse must be raised with love and care from a young age,” he notes. “The same is true for agave. To grow into a noble spirit, the agave must be raised with love and care from the start.”

Everado believes that cabal culture is what drives communication and understanding between cultures. While an understanding comes from Everado’s Mexican roots, he knows honesty and integrity can be found everywhere.

The goal of Tequila Cabal is to bring this global ideology of purity back into the spirit market. In late 2012, Everado was approached by a friend who was making RTD cocktails (ready to drink) and wanted to add in a tequila. After considering this collaborative project, he decided to start a brand of his own. Everado saw an opportunity to bring the culture of cabal to the United States. “Growing up, half in the U.S. and half in Mexico, I realized that tequila was going in a direction that felt unfamiliar. At home, there was always tequila in big jugs at parties and weddings. We understood the process, and we appreciated the taste.” He continues, “In the U.S., I noticed everyone taking tequila shots in a rush. Why are you drinking tequila if all you want to do is drink it fast and hide the taste? I wanted to make a tequila that people like to drink.”

Tequila Cabal is a gorgeous product from sip to style. Their award-winning “Cabal Horse Head” bottle designs are made from 100-percent recycled glass. This intense detailing aligns with the brand’s overall aesthetic. Everado wished to have the vessel for the tequila be just as well done as the tequila itself. He notes, “There’s a stigma within the tequila community that a nice bottle equates to a crappy juice. Because they invested in the bottle and not the juice. Why not have both?”

GIANCARLO ESPOSITO Gentleman, Everyman and THE Man

THE FIRST TIME I REALLY TOOK NOTICE of Giancarlo Esposito was when he walked onto my TV screen as Gustavo Fring, the mysterious and terrifying drug cartel leader in Breaking Bad (and later, Better Call Saul). But although the role brought the New York native considerable notoriety from TV viewers (as well as a bobblehead in his image), Giancarlo had been working in Hollywood for decades. He started as an extra in the late 1970s, and by the 1980s had scored roles in several films, including Francis Ford Coppola’s Cotton Club, and a few by Spike Lee including Do the Right Thing.

Today, Giancarlo is a leading man, starring in so many films and streaming shows, it’s getting hard to keep track.

We sat down with Giancarlo on a rainy day in Los Angeles to get it all sorted out, post-Gus.

the INTERVIEW

Cigar & Spirits Magazine: Giancarlo, you’ve played both bad guys and good guys in your career. Which is your favorite?

Giancarlo Esposito: Playing any guy. [laughter]

Playing the everyman is my favorite. Bad guys are on one end of the spectrum, and the good guys are trying to be heroic. Right now, at this time in my life, I want to play the everyman who's not represented. Up to now, it's been fun to play nefarious, bad guy characters with a dark side. I think the audience likes it because we all are a blend of both light and dark, and we very rarely present our dark side because it's just not appropriate.

[laughter]

We live vicariously through your characters. Absolutely. I've had the opportunity to play the dark side of a character in a very fastidious and very graceful way. My objective in doing so was to allow people to start to like that character.

When it goes too far to a stereotype, we immediately don't like them. When you peel the onion of a character away, you may see some of the traumatic background, where that character comes from. I've enjoyed cultivating that so people can see the mirror to what they might be keeping secret for themselves.

Back in the 1980s, you worked with Spike Lee on Do the Right Thing , School Days , Mo' Better Blues , Malcolm X . What was it like working with him? It was a very exhilarating time because Spike is very playful. He loves sports, so there's a way he directs that brings people together like a family or a team. But the exhilaration came from his ideas. He was very courageous. When do you meet a filmmaker who, in their younger years, has the confidence that Spike has? Beginning with the scripts that he writes by hand in his own handwriting—which I totally believe in because that really captures the essence of your own spirit.

“Playing the everyman is my favorite. Bad guys are on one end of the spectrum, and the good guys are trying to be heroic. Right now, at this time in my life, I want to play the everyman who's not represented.”

Yes. Some of my favorite films are Spike Lee films. Do The Right Thing was incredible.

Do The Right Thing is such a classic movie, and it was such a wonderful thing to work on. He was really pushing the envelope as to how we look at each other and treat each other in bordering neighborhoods in Brooklyn, New York.

Right. I was living in Brooklyn at the time the film came out, so it really hit home.

I think it opened a lot of people's eyes. It was a great movie.

People would argue at parties about what the ending meant, which is always great.

Yes. He was very provocative with his endings, in School Days as well. Of course, at the end of Do the Right Thing, Sal's Pizza burns down. There's a whole sense of, "Do we play into that violence? What is that teaching us? What is that telling us?" I think it was a call and a cry for respect, and a cry for acknowledgement.

Big, huge Breaking Bad fan here. Many people have come to know you as Gus Fring. Your death scene is one of the most iconic moments of Breaking Bad . What was your reaction when Vince Gilligan told you that's how your character was going to meet his demise?

Well, Vince was very graceful and very charismatic in the way he told me, and I think that's the way he is in his life. Because it wasn't like he told me. It was like he was asking me a question. That changes the game when someone asks you, "If this were to happen and you were to meet your demise, what do you think you'd be doing?" [laughs]

I was in his office, and he called me in after Episode 4-01, which was the one with the boxcutter, where I did something really reprehensible. I wasn't seen again as a character on screen in Breaking Bad until Episode 4-03. Vince came in and prepped me for what was to be Episode 4-13. It was a long time off, and it was just

to let me know that's the way he was thinking. He proposed it as a collaboration, in a way, because he was invested in investing me in thinking about what action I would be doing, how I would go out.

He said, "What if it were an explosion?" I said, "Well, I would be fixing my tie." It was a wonderful moment—I felt included in my demise.

How did you feel when you saw that scene the first time after it had been edited?

I thought it was really amazing. There was a process that went into it, so I didn't know how it would look, other than I'd have half my face missing. I went through hours with Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger, who designed the prosthetic makeup that went on my face. Howard came out and did a fivehour makeup job on me. I was told that during that process, they also dotted the inside of the face that was gone, so they could do some kind of prosthetic movement. I was never privy to the whole thing until I saw it, so I felt terrified. I felt like, "Oh my gosh, this is ugly and nasty," but there was some real power. There was some dignity in it. That's what I had asked Vince for in that conversation. "The way you take me out, it must have dignity. It must be composed, and it must have some kind of real magical charisma to it." Because that's who Gustavo Fring is.

It was a death worthy of the character. Absolutely. I felt triumph and victory because all the pieces came together, and there was a lot that had to come together to have it be respectful. It was a good death.

It was great. One people will never forget. That's right. Iconic.

“I believe that a costume can make or break you because it can make you feel feeble, or it can make you feel powerful and strong and invincible. Those are the feelings I want to feel when I'm wielding the Darksaber in a Beskar suit.”

I want to talk to you about Mandalorian . What was it like dueling in your Beskar armor?

It was a challenge to figure out how to move in such a weighted costume with limited mobility, but it was really a powerful feeling, because when you put on a breastplate, and you put on thigh plates, and the costume is just so formidable, you realize your movements can be simpler and smaller because you have to allow the costume to move for itself. I felt like I was in another world. Really, kudos to all the designers who worked on this piece that was just so very amazing. You feel invincible in many ways.

So, it was as formidable as it looks on screen. Absolutely. Everything from the boots to the helmet to the cape were flawless, and so you're cutting a very incredible figure. You let that stand for itself, and you work with the chiseling of your emotions and your face when you do take the helmet off, to portray what you need to portray. I believe that a costume can make or break you because it can make you feel feeble, or it can make you feel powerful and strong and invincible. Those are the feelings I want to feel when I'm wielding the Darksaber in a Beskar suit.

Speaking of the helmets, what's it like doing a scene with actors like Pedro Pascal or Katee Sackhoff, where you can't see their faces because they're wearing a helmet? To me, it's intriguing, and it's challenging, and satisfying because you have to read their voices and you have to read their body language. Speaking in a helmet is also challenging because the voice gets garbled. It heightens all your senses. In a way, for me, it's an exercise as an actor. I've got to hear through the veil of what's really happening and look at physical movement to tell me the emotion that's really being portrayed other than the modulation or demodulation of the volume of the voice.

It's like you must use senses you don't normally use when you’re acting.

Absolutely. You also have to rely on yourself to know the material inside and out. If I know all my lines and all the other person's lines, and I know how the scene should modulate and where it should go. If we're not getting there, then I know how to push to get it there or to push the other actor to get them there.

I also want to ask you about a new series you’re in, The Gentlemen , on Netflix, created by Guy Ritchie. Can you tell me about it?

Oh, I'm so proud of The Gentlemen. I think it's just a marvelous piece. I've loved Guy Ritchie as a filmmaker for a long time. He has a way of working that's different than any other. I had seen the movie [released in 2019] and fell in love with it. It really heightened my sensitivity to how British actors work and British directors. Guy truly is a master at what he does. I feel like this series is chockfull of fun, full of edgy action. It's dangerous, but it's also very funny.

I'm looking forward to it. Tell me about your upcoming movie, Abigail . Is this your first horror film?

It is. I don't think anyone's seen me this way. Abigail was a joy to shoot in Ireland, at the Guinness Mansion. On one hand, it's a very innocent piece about a young girl who loves ballet. But it turns out in a way that you never expected. I play a guy who, basically, brings the crew together seemingly and sets them off on their journey. We kidnap and hold this child hostage and little do we know that we are really the hostages.

68 / CIGAR & SPIRITS MAY / JUNE 2024

What about Parish , on the AMC Network? I know you're a co-producer on that.

I am. Parish is a labor of love for me. It's about a driver, an everyman who can't make ends meet. He can't look over his shoulder into his past because there's some shame behind it. He can't be that person anymore. We meet him as a family man who's lost a child, losing his house, and in many ways, he's being pushed away by his wife and child because he's never home and can't really provide because his business is falling apart. Then a dear friend who has disappeared out of his life for 17 years comes back and offers him a job as a driver. As he's not making enough money to make ends meet, so he takes it. He thinks he's driving

for a Zimbabwean businessman, and he gets in over his head. It's a crime story drama about a man who gets in too deep and must get out.

I heard that you once thought about becoming a priest. Yes. I was raised Roman Catholic. Most of my younger years, I was in parochial schools of Yonkers, New York. I went from Manhattan to Yonkers, then to Elm Street, then to Tarrytown, where I wound up in a school called Transfiguration. My mother and father were divorcing, so for two years I went away to Mount Saint Joseph Military Academy, which is now a home for elderly nuns. It's no longer an operating military academy.

WWW.CIGARANDSPIRITS.COM / 71

It was there that I began to get up at 4:30 in the morning and got the vestments ready for the priest for a 6:00 a.m. mass. Then I used to pour the wine for the priest and do everything the priest needed. This is at a time in the '60s when the mass was still said in Latin. I loved the pomp and circumstance, but also the ritual of it all. It appealed to me. It was a way to bring people to God, which was a good thing because it would ease some of their pain.

At that time, I thought becoming a priest would be an honorable thing, and also something spiritually fulfilling for me because there’s so many people in the world that are in need of solace.

So how come you didn't become a priest?

I think I saw that the priests were really good actors, and I thought I was too [laughs]. So, I became an actor. There's still a way I can get my message out there somehow, some way. Slide it in there, maybe.

Do you have any other films coming up?

MaXXXine, by Ti West, a young filmmaker who I really, really admire. It's also in a horror kind of genre, but this, to me, is a real statement on the film industry in Los Angeles. I'm really excited about it because you have to look for me to see if you even recognize me. I play a very different kind of character.

Is that all you’ve been up to?

I'm also writing a book.

Oh wow.

It’s about my life, not only in the entertainment industry, but also about all the other things I do. It'll be inclusive of stories of the old Hollywood I come from, and the new Hollywood that has arrived.

Where do you find time to do all this stuff?

I don't sleep. [laughs]

Life After Concrete PEP WILLIAMS WANTS MORE

92 / CIGAR & SPIRITS MAY / JUNE 2024 92 / CIGAR & SPIRITS MAY / JUNE 2024
C & S
>> Karina forefront. Yuni background. Cuba.

BELYING HIS CHILL EXTERIOR, Pep Williams rolls through life with the force of a train, always asking "What's next?" rather than "How am I going to get there?"

Yet, get there he has, navigating careers as a pro skateboarder, fashion model, music industry creative, and fine art photographer. From South Central to DogTown and everywhere in between, Williams channels his creativity and adrenaline into capturing the rawness of urban existence, offering glimpses of previously unseen perspectives. His photographs reveal the intimacy of lives lived on the margins, showcasing the grit required to keep moving forward, always forward. Because for Williams, every moment is an opportunity to do more, and he shows no signs of slowing down.

Cigar & Spirits Magazine: You’re now an acclaimed photographer, and you were a world-renowned skateboarder. I want to talk a little bit about how the journey took you from skateboarding to this.

Pep Williams: I was born in Florence [Los Angeles], and we moved to Watts when I was around seven years old. As I got older, and I was able to catch the bus myself, I started to travel. I learned how to make fake bus passes as a kid. I'd go everywhere, around the whole city. My mom never knew.

I always had my board with me. I started skating in ‘75, when I was four years old. Then I found Venice Beach. I think it was ‘85, ‘86. I got hooked even more because I didn't know people did it in big groups. I always took it seriously. I didn't know the names of the tricks, but I was already doing them. The guys in Venice became my brothers, like the guys from DogTown and everything.

Back then, I didn't walk. I just rode my board. It was natural. When I was around people who were doing it, it was normal. They looked like me. They dressed like me. They weren't surfer dudes. They were basically gangsters on skateboards.

After that, I turned pro. I was on the covers of magazines. I was in a bunch of commercials. Then I dabbled in the music industry. Music is my passion. I believe if you're really good with people, you can do anything. You can go into any world.

Even with my photography, the way I got into that was real cool. I was in a fashion show for a friend of mine...

Did you model?

I modeled for about four years.

“I've never been the type to follow a certain program. I guess I was always an individual. I wanted my work, my idea, my concept, not someone paying me to shoot theirs.”

Look at you, you handsome devil. [laughs] I did a lot of runway. It was cool. Then one day, this photographer double-booked a shoot. He chose to go with the other company. The company I was working with was freaking out.

They were going to pay [the photographer] $6,000 for the shoot. I thought, “How hard is it? You look through a hole, press a button.”

So, I said, “I'm a photographer.” They're like, “What? Well, we need to see your portfolio.”

I said, “We don't have time. We have to get this shoot done now.” I hired this kid at a local college because every major shoot I'd been to, the assistant did everything anyway. I just sat back. Boom, boom, boom. He set it up. It was easy. I did it for several years until I thought I knew what I was doing. That's when I started to learn about perspective. It's easy to learn the mechanics of a camera—how to shoot it—but when you put angles and perspective and lenses,

that's the hard part because you want a certain look or a certain style.

I was working for a bunch of brands doing really good. Then I got bored. That's when I got into fine art photography. I just said, “I want to be known for my style, my work. I want to be in museums. I want to be in that world.”

It's interesting that you’re able to combine the physicality of skateboarding with a metaphysics of art.

I've never been the type to follow a certain program. I guess I was always an individual. I wanted my work, my idea, my concept, not someone paying me to shoot theirs.

The biggest lesson I ever learned in photography was when I was making tons of money with my tattoo work. I pursued shooting in a prison. It took me about four years of getting denied over and over again. Then they finally said yes.

I'm there in the prison. I walked up to a guy, fully tattooed, and I said, “Dude, I would love to shoot your portrait.” He said, “Oh yes, sure. Hold up a second.”

So, I'm waiting. He comes back wearing a sweatshirt. I'm like, “Why did you put on a shirt?”

He said, “Oh, this is my past.”

That moment changed what I wanted to do with my work. It made me look at myself. Like, ‘I came here to use you guys, to make money, not realizing this is your life I'm using. This is your thing I'm taking advantage of.’ At that point, I just changed. The only thing you can see in that image I shot is “Faith” on his neck.

Now, I speak at colleges all over the world. My work sparks conversation. The prison work, it's a whole other level of questions. It's at the Autry Museum. It's a permanent exhibit. My images aren't dark. They're very positive. Happy, smiling, dancing, laughing, just having a good time. People cry because they have someone in prison. They’re like, “Thank you so much because now I know that it's not so bad for him in there.”

That's worth it. That's worth more than any money.

That’s what makes it dynamic, too. You’re showing the light. You’re showing the breadth of a person, not just the cliché or what you see on the surface.

As you said, music is your passion. Cigars as well. Pick an artist–anyone that would make you say, “Hey, Randy, you’ve got to listen to these guys while we chat over a cigar.”

One of my favorites—he passed—was Pop Smoke. He was dope. Cool kid, just a really nice guy. Who else? Thundercat,

that's like my little brother. There are so many, but who would I have a cigar with? If I could choose someone from my past in the music industry, it would be Suge. 100%. Suge Knight.

Were you guys tight?

I met Suge years ago. I would see him all the time up at Death Row Records, as I was running across the hall from Death Row to Interscope back in ‘92 to about ‘94. He was the first guy I ever saw smoking real cigars. He always had one. I had no interest in it back then, but it was cool.

What was the first cigar you smoked?

I didn't start smoking until 2018. I had no interest until I went to Cuba. Hirochi [Robaina] had these freshly rolled, beautiful cigars. Everyone knew I didn't smoke. My friends were laughing at me. I lit it. I didn’t know how to hold it; didn't know how to do anything. Before that, there was a guy who wrapped a cigar for me before we went to lunch, and I put it in my pocket and just kept it. I still have it in my humidor. That was my very first cigar, but the first one I smoked was Hirochi’s.

Cigar sentimentality. I love it. What would you like your last cigar to be as a reward for all that you’ve accomplished and will continue to do so?

If I do have a cigar–something I enjoy. I love Zaya's [Younan] blends from El Septimo, they're on point. First and always, cigars, music, photography…being positive and challenging yourself is what it’s all about.

OUT-OF-THE-BLUE TASK FOR TODAY:

Without thinking too hard and long, go ahead and name ten of the world’s most respected and popular spirits brands. As spirits enthusiasts, we can probably agree on many of them. We can take it to the next level by tackling a similar task by category: scotch, tequila, bourbon, etc. Spirits enthusiasts would likely agree on many of those choices as well.

When you think of the cognac category—and there are any number of crème de la crème brands—you’ll most likely land on Hennessy in the blink of an eye.

The brand’s history is magnificent. Real history that involves war, aristocrats and familial pride. Hennessy Global Brand Education & Training Director Julien Pepin Lehalleur was able to share some insight about the iconic brand’s yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Cigar & Spirits Magazine: Tell us about how you became affiliated with Hennessy.

Julien Pepin Lehalleur: It was a long and intense journey to get to the holy grail of spirits. I joined Hennessy as the Global Brand Education & Training Director in October 2018. However, my career at Moet Hennessy started in 2000, with Ruinart Champagne as business controller. I then moved to fashion for Dior Couture managing wholesale in Europe for five years. After that, Krug Champagne in the U.S.A. and Asia. Finally, two years in travel retail as Key Account Director on Duf ry.

How rewarding is it for you that you represent Hennessy and that it’s recognized as an iconic brand?

Pride of belonging to this incredible Maison is the common trait to all Hennessy employees. Very rewarding, yet very challenging to be up to the task of representing the number-one premium spirit in the world, the leader of cognac and the most important wine and spirits brand of the LVMH group. But I adore when people in key markets (such as the U.S.A., our number-one market) look jealously at me when I tell them I work for Hennessy, in Cognac, France.

Please share with our readers a bit about the history and prestige of the brand and how that tradition and authenticity informs Hennessy today.

Hennessy was founded in 1765 by Richard Hennessy, an Irish aristocrat who joined the troops of French King

Louis XV to fight the British who were ruling in Ireland.

After eight years on the battlefield, he quit to learn the trading of spirits—eau-de-vie or “water of life”—with his cousins in Flanders, which is what we now know as Belgium.

He settled in Cognac, where he deemed the eaux-de-vies to be of superior quality and reputation. The company was then passed on to his son

James who rapidly developed the business internationally with the very first shipment to the U.S.A. in 1794. And so on and so forth for eight generations.

The roots of the brand are fascinating.

Yes. But what sets Hennessy even further apart is the fact that this is actually the tale of two families who have worked hand in hand for eight generations. In 1806, James Hennessy named Jean Fillioux as the first master blender for Hennessy. This position was then occupied by his son, and this carried on until nowadays, with Renaud Fillioux de Gironde, who took over after his uncle Yann Fillioux in 2017.

“HENNESSY IS A GLOBAL LUXURY BRAND AND UNIQUE IN ITS ABILITY TO EMBRACE LOCAL CULTURES ALL OVER THE WORLD.”
>>Next-gen Maurice Hennessy.

This transmission of skills, secrets, savoir-faire and above all of an incredible qualitative stock of eaux-de-vies is unique in the world of spirits. Together with his tasting committee, the gatekeepers of tradition and quality at Hennessy, Renaud gathers daily to taste some 60 eaux-de-vie—12,000 samples per year. They also look after over 500,000 barrels and 3,000 demi-johns, most probably the largest reserve of eaux-de-vies in the world, and certainly the most ancient, with some over 200 years old. This unparalleled reserve allows Renaud and his tasting committee to craft a portfolio of very different cognacs, from our Hennessy Very Special to some of the most prestigious cognacs in the world, such as Hennessy Paradis or Richard Hennessy.

Who would you say is the typical Hennessy connoisseur these days? Or maybe there isn’t a typical enthusiast… Hennessy is a global luxury brand and unique in its ability to embrace local cultures all over the world. It’s fascinating to see how people around the world feel close to our values. In each country where Hennessy settled, it adapted itself to local culture and customs. The brand found its public and thanks to this versatility, consistency of excellence and quality it has become the number-one cognac house in the world. You’d be surprised to see how differently people drink it around the globe. There’s absolutely no archetype for the Hennessy lover.

What are the most popular or prestigious sellers?

It varies drastically from one country to another. I can just tell you that Hennessy is present in the most high-end restaurants and hotels around the planet, as well as in the most renowned wine and spirits retailers.

What are the unique aspects that make Hennessy elite, collectible and sought after?

At Hennessy, the price of our cognacs is driven by the rarity of the eaux-de-vies composing the blend. The rarest cognac in the permanent collection is Richard Hennessy, a tribute to our founder, created in 1996 by seventh generation master blender Yann Fillioux. This incredible cognac is an assemblage of our rarest and oldest eaux-de-vies. Only 12 barrels—around 9,000 bottles—are released annually so this is a must-have for collectors and serious aficionados. We also have even more limited editions, sold through very selective distribution, created in very limited quantity, or even made-to-measure by the master blender. Cognacs belonging to the “Edition Rares” are the epitome of cognac-making so highly praised.

100 / CIGAR & SPIRITS MAY / JUNE 2024

How does a new Hennessy drinker discover your cognac? Hennessy is present in over 150 countries. The brand is a major player in travel retail and is well-distributed in key on-trade accounts such as restaurants, cocktail bars and hotels. Hennessy is also a sponsor at important sports and music events. And we have famous Brand Ambassadors in the hip-hop community, boxing with Canelo Alvarez, or reggaeton music with Maluma. Since 2020, Hennessy is the official spirit of the NBA. As you start to understand, Hennessy is brand that cannot be unnoticed.

Why would a new consumer or a seasoned enthusiast select the brand? It’s a safe choice as the number-one cognac—the prestige of the brand through international recognition. There must be a reason behind such success, meaning that if undisputed quality was not there, we wouldn’t be able to withstand that leading position. The width of our portfolio and the versatility of our cognacs allows everyone to find a cognac that will suit their palate. The brand is enjoyed in many ways—neat, on the rocks or even in classic cocktails for some of our cognacs, from Hennessy VS and VSOP to Hennessy X.O. Last but not least, a consumer may also choose Hennessy because he or she has been introduced to the brand by a sommelier, a bartender, a caviste or through a friend who’s in love with Hennessy. This decade is a very exciting one for Hennessy, nevertheless we face a challenge—we do not have enough eaux-devie to face the growing demand!

The hotel is positioned near a variety of water types: still water for casting ponds, great rivers for floating, and spring creeks for technical fishing. The Sage Lodge angler experience is suited to all genders and ages wishing to try the sport on their own terms. It desires to combat an unapproachability

that traditionally accompanies fly fishing. The angler of all classes, all types, and all levels of experience is encouraged to experiment with the sport. Those who have never fly fished can enjoy an introduction and sampling of it outside of the confines of a traditional fly-fishing lodge.

Sage Lodge is positioned on the north end of Yellowstone National Park, claiming the only entrance to remain open to vehicular traffic during all 12 months of the year. In the cold winter months of January and February, guests are privy to fascinating sightings of rare wildlife, notably Yellowstone’s wolves. Animals move seasonally through the property, which lands at an impressive 1,250 acres. There is no shortage of land to go enjoy—the Lodge holds 300 acres on the Yellowstone River, and lodgers can expect frequent sightings of moose, elk and other animals throughout their travails.

The setting and landscape at Sage Lodge is dramatic. Whether it is the sun peeking through clouds or lights shimmering off the river, the stunning experience Sage Lodge offers is undeniable.

But don’t take our word for it. Book your stay at the Sage Lodge Hotel and find out for yourself. sagelodge.com

The Soho Cigar Bar Celebrates its 25th Anniversary Part II

introduction and photos by Margaret

THE CELEBRATED SOHO CIGAR BAR is commemorating its 25th anniversary this year. Formerly known as Circa Tabac until 25 years ago, this iconic establishment exudes the ambiance of a 1920s speakeasy with a nod to Art Deco. It continues to be one of New York City’s must-visit cigar bar locales.

The Soho Cigar Bar is one of six remaining establishments in Manhattan where patrons can freely indulge in eating, drinking and smoking indoors. The plush interior, a delectable small bites menu, and an extensive whiskey collection contribute to the allure of Soho Cigar Bar—making it one of New York's oldest and most revered landmark cigar bars and lounges.

Can you imagine seeing Andy Warhol and JeanMichel Basquiat sketching and smoking in the back of the bar? Well, that and much more happened at this storied establishment. Regulars from as far back as the 1970s share tales about Saturday Night Live post parties and other unique anecdotes from inside the walls of the Soho Cigar Bar. Today, one might even spot a celebrity imbibing, smoking and enjoying some Sinatra tunes in a secluded corner.

Soho owner Lee Ringelheim shared some of Soho’s top cocktails from the past in our last issue. Today, he shares some current favorites that devotees can craft at home or are sure to enjoy on their first or next visit to the lounge. Cheers!
