PUBLISHER’S NOTE

THE CIGARS WE CHOOSE

WHEN I WAS GROWING UP in New York City, I became aware of cigars at a fairly young age. One of my first jobs—at twelve years old—was working as a dishwasher and bus boy at the famous John’s of Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village. John’s is arguably the home of New York’s best coal-fired brick oven pizza, and you should make it a bucket list item if you’re a pizza fanatic, as I am.

The owner’s brother was sight-impaired. I picked up a few extra bucks to walk “Blind Louie” around the neighborhood so he could get some exercise. He always had a cigar in hand or mouth. The small cigars were machine-made and usually sold in a pack of five. The price was right for working-class guys back in the day. Some men in the neighborhood wore nicely tailored suits, conducted their daily and nightly business from darkly lit “social clubs,” drove Cadillacs (or were driven by others while comfortably sitting in the back seat) and smoked what I later learned were Cuban cigars.

Long story short, as the years went on, for me and many of the guys I grew up with, we reached the proverbial fork in the road and had to figure out which type of man we wanted to be. And which cigars would be our choice.

I was fortunate enough to go to college. I decided to do the work, pull myself out the right way and resist the temptation to go for the short money. I figured I’d fuse the best of the different elements I was exposed to in my youth and make myself into my own man. I put it together so I would end up with both street smarts and book smarts.

To that point, I’ll smoke a working man’s cigar or a premium stick any day of the week with people I connect with, or with others where a cigar is the conduit to a new relationship. Connecting to people through cigar appreciation has been an impactful part of my life. Some of the most meaningful conversations, celebratory moments and contemplative thoughts in my life have occurred with cigar in hand.

I find it rewarding to experience new cigar moments with colleagues and the audience we reach with Cigar & Spirits Magazine. It’s my way of building a bridge to people regardless of the cigar they smoke. My hope is that you’ll take away entertaining information from our cigar, spirits and lifestyle coverage during the time we have together, and our connection will be that much stronger. Remember, we are the people we choose to be.

Sincerely,

MYSTIC GALACTIC

Mystic Farm & Distillery in Durham, North Carolina has an audacious plan to create one of the world’s most exclusive batches of bourbon by sending five barrels of its finest spirits into space to age for a year. This endeavor by the brand hopes to create a bourbon that’s truly out of this world.

The release is limited to 1,500 bottles, and just 1,000 bottles of Mystic Galactic bourbon will be available for pre-sale at $75,000 each through an NFT (Non-Fungible Token) drop.

The 10-year-old company is currently working with a variety of launch vendors, including SpaceX and United Launch Alliance, to send the 3-year-old bourbon into low Earth orbit, reports Johnathan Blitz, who co-owns Mystic Farm & Distillery with his wife, Marla Tuchinsky, and Mike and Katie Sinclair.

The barrels used to store the bourbon will be recoopered by West Virginia Great Barrel Company to install baffles so that sloshing bourbon doesn’t destabilize the spacecraft and add corrosion-resistant titanium hoops. The barrels will also be pressure-tested to three times normal pressure in preparation for their sojourn into space.

“The barrels will be inside an orbiter with a heat shield and parachute suitable for reentry and will orbit the Earth once every 100 minutes or so,” says Blitz. “It will slowly spin on its axis, which will spin the bourbon out into the barrel.”

A year in space will expose the orbiter and its contents to some unique extremes, including dramatic temperature fluctuations. Blitz isn’t overly concerned that the quality of the bourbon will suffer, though he admits there’s no way to know with certainty. “I believe only one experiment has been done aging spirits in space, but that was putting high phenol whiskey in a plastic vial with a wood chip, and that’s just not real,” Blitz says. “We’re using quality Appalachian oak barrels that already have some age on them.”

Upon its return to Earth, the bourbon will be placed in 900-gram European glass bottles, which are laser-etched with metal insets. “The bottles come with a tamperevident composite nosecone over the top, which requires a special tool to remove,” Blitz adds. “Once you remove the top part of the fairing, you will never be able to reseal it again.”

An NFT will be provided as proof of ownership, and each purchaser will receive a fragment of one of the space-faring barrels and a 50-ml sample so they can taste the bourbon without opening their bottles.

“Mystic Galactic represents a milestone beyond just an elite luxury product because in every generation there is that object of desire, whether it’s a limited-edition Ferrari or a high-end watch,” Blitz observes. “I also believe Mystic Galactic represents the reality of manufacturing in space. Since I was a kid in the 1980s, I’ve been hearing about how we’re going to manufacture in space, and it has never come to pass. I believe Mystic Galactic speaks to the maturity of commercial space endeavors to be able to create a commercial product, even if it’s not a mass market product.”

Blitz hopes to send the five barrels into space in January 2024 and will return them a year later. Purchasers will receive an app that will provide content related to the engineering and the mission, and there will be a live video feed as the barrels are sealed and prepared for space. “There will also be a launch party exclusive to those holding NFTs, as well as a re-entry celebration a year later,” Blitz says. “Purchasers will be able to pick up their bottles at Mystic Farms & Distillery or another designated location. As you can imagine, this isn’t something we want to ship through the mail.”

THE $10K “MARTINI ON THE ROCK”

The Algonquin Hotel is one of New York City's most storied hotels–full of quirky traditions it protects with pride. The Algonquin was home to the famous literary circle known as The Round Table from approximately 1919 to 1929. This literary aristocracy included Dorothy Parker, Noël Coward, Harpo Marx, George and Beatrice Kaufman and Tallulah Bankhead as members. You can still request a seat where the world’s most famous writers and actors once held court.

The Algonquin’s history is rich beyond The Round Table, too. Lerner and Loewe worked 24 hours a day at the hotel while writing My Fair Lady. The hotel’s owner threatened to remove the piano from their suite if they didn’t turn down the volume. The hotel bar was dubbed “the Blue Bar” by actor John Barrymore at the end of Prohibition in 1933. Barrymore convinced the general manager to add blue gel over the lights “because people look more attractive in blue lighting.”

Maya Angelou stayed at the Algonquin when visiting New York. She wrote the screenplay (adapted from her memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings) on Algonquin stationery. Curiously, the Algonquin has been the abode of a resident hotel cat since the 1920s. Currently, an orange tabby stray named Hamlet (the seventh of his name) resides at the hotel, and the hotel holds an annual cat fashion show to raise money for charity.

One of the more extravagant traditions at The Algonquin Hotel is the $10,000 Martini, also known as the "Martini on the Rock."

Ordering the $10,000 martini is not quite so simple as bellying up to the hotel’s Blue Bar and requesting one. Ordering the martini requires a 72-hour pre-order notice. Once the order is placed, customers visit the hotel's inhouse jeweler, Bader & Garrin, to select their preferred diamond (and setting if desired). The martini is then served in the Blue Bar.

The first $10,000 martini was ordered in 2005 by a young man who proposed to his girlfriend with the drink. "When all was said and done, the proposal cost almost $13,000," according to the hotel. The same year, NPR reported on a certain John Ridley who also ordered the drink, opting for James Bond's martini of choice, the Vesper. Ridley sold the diamond for $7,000 and with a $1,000 donation from The Algonquin Hotel, donated the proceeds to charities that support returning military service members and their families.

We asked The Algonquin Hotel if they know how frequently the drink is ordered. The response was that they don't keep a record, but "it is a pretty rare occurrence." Still, you will always find the drink available on The Round Table menu, where it has become an intriguing and spirited tradition. -Michelle Young/C&S Staff

NIP AND TUCK

A hip flask offers a quick nip, perhaps a shot, or maybe just a nice pick-me-up when on the go. A flask can be a great companion for that outdoors adventure, drinking by the firepit or can be tucked away as creatively in your outfit as you’d like when out and about.

These beverage receptacles trace their roots to the Middle Ages when hollowed fruit would often be filled with a desired libation. The more recent versions date back to the 18th century when women would conceal these handy devices and smuggle them aboard British warships for their men. No doubt Prohibition made concealing a bit of firewater even more of a necessity.

Modern flasks have even gone beyond the traditional steel or pewter look. With spring approaching, and perhaps a little time on the tee box, here's a look at some newer flasks that might be perfect for that golf bag or backpack.

Garrett Flask by Ralph Lauren ($250)

The canvas and leather cover displaying the classic Ralph Lauren engraving is timeless. This flask is elegant, the cover is moisture-wicking, and the solid brass topper adds some color to this drinking setup. Add 12 ounces of your favorite liquor and twist on the cap. Better yet, keep the cap off and enjoy.

Diamond Blue Flask by Vermont Copper ($350)

This vibrant flask is perfect for a spring or summer outing. Vermont Copper brings the traditional feel with a dotted blue patina, but the design adds a bit of a modern twist. The handcrafted copper will have your friends bumming a shot, and they’ll likely ask you where they can pick up one for themselves. This copper canister looks like a work of art.

Come and Take It Flask by Republic Boot Co. ($59)

This rustic flask is the perfect indulgence with an attractive price point. You may never be cast as a badass on Yellowstone, but you can at least take a nip like Rip or Lloyd might. These handtooled works of art are designed by leather craftsman Bill Land, and they make for quite the conversation piece. Choose your exact design and hit the trail (or cigar shop).

Bayside Red Silicone Glass Flask Gift Set by Ragproper ($50)

This affordable gift set features attractive colors and modern technology to the traditional hip flask. We especially liked the refreshing red. The silicone sleeve also includes an easy-pour window, making overfilling almost impossible, and conveniently lets you know when it’s time for a refill. Ragproper has thought of everything with this set—a 100-milliliter single shot and a 240-milliliter double shot. Both are sleek, stylish and perfect for your favorite spirit. -Sean Chaffin

ANTIQUE TASTES

Some enthusiasts may want to re-visit the Roaring Twenties or perhaps a European battlefield in World War II with a vintage flask. Finding an antique flask has never been easier in the age of online auctions and seller’s markets. A vintage flask collection makes for an interesting conversation starter in a mancave or cigar lounge. Here’s a look at a few spirited collectibles.

Gothic Revival Flask (Thomas Johnson, $1,523)

This oval Victorian sterling silver hip flask dates back to 1875 and was recently auctioned online. This piece is a classic example of true craftsmanship, and the ornate engravings gracing the cap are flawless. No doubt this flask will draw plenty of attention when displayed, or when broken out for a quick sip.

Russian Hip Flask (manufacturer unknown, $2,300)

This colorful enameled flask brings a real artistic flair to your drinking collection. This work of art makes use of the cloisonné process, an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects with colored material (normally enamel or gemstones) held in place or separated by metal strips or wire, often gold.

Antique Silver-Plated Hip Flask (manufacturer unknown, $2,300)

The silver gleam on this beauty gives off an elegant panache. The classic leather cover adds to this flask’s appeal and offers inviting textural aesthetics. The dome-style cap accentuates the flask and certainly catches the eye. -S.C.

BESPOKE TECH

CERTAIN BUYERS desire exclusivity—a thing of beauty designed just for them. The final result might not flash iconic labels or Instagrammable glitz, but true luxury isn’t about showing off, is it? It’s about rarity. Think diamonds on the soles of your shoes vs. gold chain bling.

In our era, when fast fashion can be purchased with a flick of the finger by the multitudes with matching smartphones, how can the worlds of bespoke and tech intersect in an intelligent way?

Before you conjure up images of robot tailors taking over Savile Row, take a look at our list of trends that will give your lifestyle a personalized touch (without worrying about an AI revolution.)

3D Print Your Style

3D printing has been used to make everything from architectural models to prototypes for children’s toys since it was invented in 1986. Yet, it’s only in recent years that the technology has gone beyond prototypes and into the mainstream market, with new bio-plastics and recycled materials helping to reduce waste. The benefit of 3D printing in bespoke fashion is that each product can be made to order at a relatively low cost for the company— the drawback is that the types of materials that can be used by the printer are limited. For now, you’ll still have to source your custom silk shirts and leather wingtips the old-fashioned way.

Holthinrichs Watches

Many people with a passion for the finer things in life also have horological obsessions. The low-tech, yet highly skilled, craftsmanship of a beautiful timepiece offers a respite away from the barrages of smartwatch text messages that can vibrate on the wrist like a secondary pulse. Holthinrichs , an independent Dutch watchmaker founded by former architect Michiel Holthinrichs, was one of the first crafters of luxury timepieces to jump into 3D printing. Far from the polyamides and plastics typically used to print, the line of watches is printed in noble metals such as gold, titanium and rhodium, then hand finished. The Ornament series recalls the sculptural lines of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Art Deco constructions, while the Ornament Raw watches are inspired by the Brutalist aesthetic of Le Corbusier. Each watch can be custom designed to your specifications with a variety of finishes, bands, faces and gears.

Pricing varies depending on customization and style but count at least $8,000 for your bespoke watch. holthinrichswatches.com

XYZbag

XYZbag was born in Italy, one of the fashion capitals of the world. Rather than trying to make its mark in a country known for luxurious leather goods and haute couture, XYZbag focuses on sustainability and digital manufacturing. The bag cases are fabricated out of printed layers of nylon powder with leather or fabric inserts. You can choose from one of the pre-made styles or create your custom bag or briefcase by uploading your concept and having a designer 3D print your tailor-made vision. From $250. xyzbag.com

Adidas’ FUTURECRAFT.STRUNG

Sportswear giant Adidas has been in the 3D printing game for several years now. Their line of 4DFWD sneakers uses a 3D printed midsole to balance the compression and impact that occur in the feet while running. Yet, a runner’s stride is an individual thing, and the shoes should reflect that. The upcoming Futurecraft.strung shoes take latticed 3D printed soles and merge them with an innovative upper, which wraps around the foot like a cocoon of colored thread. The threads are custom placed by a robot to conform to an athlete’s specific performance needs. The shoes are still in development. Until they’re available to consumers, head to the company’s website to check out the midsole tech in their 4DFWD line. $200/pair. adidas.com

ATHOS

Any trekker or climber knows that having the right shoes is essential for a successful adventure. Imagine having climbing shoes that are literally made for the exact bone structure of your feet. ATHOS, a custom shoe company developed by students in Barcelona, scans each user’s feet and then prints the shoe using biodegradable and vegan TPU materials. The resulting footwear has an improved slip-free grip that makes even the steepest cliff scalable. The shoes are still in their BETA testing phase, but they should be available to the wider public soon. They are currently priced at just under $200 for the prototype. Check out the concept here: athos-era.com

What’s

New?

Smart fabrics that change colors and/or temperatures based on your mood, setting, or needs, AI shopping assistants, and body-scanning mirrors in dressing rooms are all on the horizon. But perhaps the most interesting addition to the luxury goods market is Arianee, a French startup that has created a protocol to authenticate high-value items through NFT-based watermarks. Arianee is collaborating with companies such as Breitling and Richemont Group to ensure the rarity and quality of luxury goods aren’t disrupted by cheap knock-offs. -Molly Headley arianee.org

The hotel itself is comprised of two Georgian-style townhouses that have been refurbished to combine classic English elegance and hospitality with modern amenities. FEATURED PAIRINGS

PERFECTO PAIRINGS TO EXPAND YOUR PALATE

ROCKY PATEL AGED LIMITED RARE AMARAS LOGIA MEZCAL TOBALA

Rocky Patel has developed a vast cigar portfolio over the years. Many of the company’s offerings center around Honduran and Nicaraguan tobacco. The Aged Limited Rare features a large set of elegant bands that cover the cigar, and underneath lies an oily, smooth wrapper with scents of sweet, aged tobacco.

As we see in the name, the Aged Limited Rare contains aged tobacco, and Patel has rested these leaves for two years before blending. The San Andrés wrapper adds notes of sweetness and boldness to the cigar, with floral flavors on the light. As the smoke progresses, we have a cinnamon/chili/cocoa flavor profile that’s tasty and exquisite for pairing. The slight box press makes it easy to puff and the burn is flawless.

I paired this rare Rocky with Amaras Logia Mezcal Tobala, a mezcal using 12-yearold agave that’s grown and processed in Tlacolula, Oaxaca, and is double distilled in clay pot stills by maestro mezcalero Doroteo Garcia Salvador.

The nose on Amaras is bold and smoky, and flavors include grass and wood char. After the first smoky sip, you’ll begin to note herbs, forest floor flavors, and moss which balance out the sweet chocolatiness of the Aged Limited Rare.

This is a tasty and abundant pairing, enjoyed on a late spring evening with one or two hours to sit and savor.

LA AURORA PREFERIDOS

1903 EDITION SAPPHIRE PERFECTO (TUBO)

GLENGOYNE LEGACY SERIES CHAPTER THREE SCOTCH

It’s always a pleasure to revisit cigars from the original cigar factory in the Dominican Republic: La Aurora. Their doble figurado tubos are arguably the most visually recognizable cigars in the industry. The iconic cigars are available at brick-and-mortar stores in a rainbow of colors, the presentation is unique and as a result they make great gifts.

The differentiating feature from color to color is the cigar wrapper itself. The cigar features a Connecticut wrapper. Pre-light smells of the wrapper are fresh hay, and when cutting and lighting, the hay notes blend with a sugar cookie flavor. I’d swear you could taste the grains of sugar as you go. As the smoke progresses, the hay flavor remains, and those dry crops remain on the tip of your tongue. The cigar is creamy and burns well.

I paired the La Aurora Sapphire with a limited release for Glengoyne: the Legacy Series Chapter Three. Nosing this Scotch will give you barley, plus similar crops as the La Aurora. Sips, however, give you some tropical flavors: banana bread with raisins, mango and fresh bananas as well. The breadiness of both cigar and Scotch, from cookie notes to banana bread, make for a balanced pairing that’s light and smooth. The strength of either is not overpowering, and this pairing would go down easy over lunch or a late-morning snack.

BLACK WORKS STUDIO KILLER BEE NIKKA WHISKY YOICHI AROMATIC YEAST (2022 DISCOVERY SERIES)

As we shake off the winter frost and enter springtime, I’d like to offer a nomination of one of the better “short smokes” out there: the Black Works Studio Killer Bee. With a unique cap featuring “striped” contrasting wrappers, this is a small but-significant cigar that’s great as evenings turn warmer.

The cap itself is deliciously sweet and almost sticky, but as you light the Killer Bee, you realize there is some strength being masked by the sweetness. If you’ve smoked Black Works before, they are not shy with the black pepper profile, and this also brings that familiar tasty zing. Only a bit into the smoke, there are some tropical fruit notes, and there’s something of a pepper-and-pineapple interplay here that’s really special. I paired my Killer Bee with Nikka’s limited Youchi Aromatic Yeast 2022.

The Nikka begins with a vanilla nose, and there’s a slight hint of appealing smoke. There’s a plethora of herbal tasting notes here, particularly mint and basil, while the smoke remains in the background. “Aromatic” indeed, this is a unique Nikka product that should hold a place on your whisky shelf and makes for a lovely cigar pairing sipper.

ALEC BRADLEY TEMPUS NATURAL CODIGO 1530 AÑEJO BARREL STRENGTH TEQUILA

The Alec Bradley Tempus is a labor of love from AB’s founder Alan Rubin, who spent several years (“tempus” is time in Latin) developing the blend, and in particular, the wrapper for this stick. The price point is excellent for those seeking a stellar AB premium cigar while saving some coin for your wallet. The end result is a flavorful and enjoyable smoking experience.

The wrapper has familiar earth notes from the Honduran tobacco, and on light the earthiness remains, with a bit of salted nuts and wood. The smoke production is ample, and the burn line is perfect. As it develops, there are also notes of leather. This is a rich and filling cigar, which fits well in the “full” category with its complex flavors.

I paired the Alec Bradley Tempus with Codigo 1530 Añejo Barrel Strength Tequila—a special bottling of Codigo packaged in an aluminum sleeve, commonly seen with Scotches. Barrel strength tequilas are rare sips, and it was a pleasure to pair this one with the Tempus. The nose of the Codigo 1530 is wood with spices and cinnamon. Sipping is extremely pleasurable, even at the higher proof. Flavor notes include black tea, anise and baking spices, which pair well with the earthy notes of the Bradley. This is a charming and rich after-dinner smoking experience that’ll easily fill your craving for dessert.

ESCOBAR MADURO CHURCHILL UNCLE NEAREST STRAIGHT RYE

Escobar is a relatively new player in the cigar industry. Headquartered in Nicaragua, the blends are divided into maduro and natural lines and are blended by Puros Privados, founded by David Gomes and Michael McNaughton in 2017. Hip-hop legend Nasir “Nas” Jones is also actively involved with the brand.

The flavor notes of the Escobar Maduro are chocolate and fine brandy—a surprise— and earthy notes of fall leaves. Into the second third, there are vanilla notes as well, underscoring the earth and remaining both earthy and sweet to the nub. The cigar leans towards bold, and the Churchill is a long and elegant smoke.

I paired the Escobar Maduro with Uncle Nearest Rye, particularly because it has a similar chocolate nose, and I surmised the two would pair well. Uncle Nearest Rye is 100-proof, but smooth and easy-drinking. The flavor profile is sweet grain and a long-lasting creamy vanilla note on the back palate.

While the Escobar Maduro is a bold and lengthy smoking experience, Nearest Rye pairs well because you can sip slowly and it’s light and crisp.

Escobar and Nearest provide a chocolaty and smoky pairing experience that’s reserved for fans of bold cigars with lots of unique character.

BLAIR O’NEAL THE BALANCING ACT: GOLF, MODELING AND MOTHERHOOD

Not many athletes can claim to be a topnotch professional golfer, a highprofile model and a television broadcaster all in one, but Blair O’Neal has all of these niches covered.

Currently the co-host of School of Golf on the Golf Channel, Blair spent 10 years as a pro golfer while simultaneously establishing a successful modeling career. She has graced the pages of Sports Illustrated (including the swimsuit issue), Maxim, Golf Digest and Men’s Health

Blair’s golf credentials include being named the Women’s 5A Arizona State Golf Champion at a young age and attending Arizona State University on a golf scholarship. She competed all four years on the women’s Sun Devil golf team and was crowned a two-time NCAA women’s longdrive champion.

Blair sat down with Cigar & Spirits to talk about her passion for golf, her newest career as a television broadcaster, and her role as mom to two young boys.

Cigar & Spirits Magazine: What was your initial inspiration to succeed in a golf career?

Blair O’Neal: I think my initial drive was competing. I loved to compete, and I still do. It was competing and then putting in the work to see improvement. I loved to see improvement, so I loved to practice and work really hard. I started playing tournaments when I was 11. All these girls had been playing for years before, so I was behind. Then in like two years, I was catching up and winning these junior tournaments with girls who have been playing for a long time. I don't play professionally anymore, but I think having that drive when I was younger helped me to push myself and create the career I have today.

How has your drive to succeed evolved over the years?

My career has shifted to television and a modeling career, but everything I've done in the past has helped me to get to where I am now. All the experience I had playing on tour and traveling and grinding all those years as a professional athlete has helped me now to be able to go on television to talk about the g ame and what it is to play at that level.

You are transferring the skills and that tenacity as a competitor to your media career.

I don’t feel there's a cap or a limit of what I can or can't do in my career. To this day, I've done things I never thought I would've done. I just never know what opportunities will come my way. I've always been open to accepting opportunities, even if I'm really scared of them. I jumped into television and threw myself into it. I had never done it. I push myself to succeed, and that inner competitiveness has helped me do things I wou ldn't have thought of doing.

You still play, right?

I play in celebrity events now, which for me is perfect. I get to also feed my competitiveness because celebrities are so competitive. [laughs]

Oh, no doubt. How many have you done over the years?

Oh my gosh. A lot. Too many to count. It has been a mazing to meet all these people.

Was there ever anyone that you were like, “Ooh, I'm in the same airspace as this famous person.”?

A lot of them. I think probably one of the biggest ones was Justin Timberlake. I played in the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe, and he was playing as well. Charles Barkley, too.

You shared some cocktails with Justin Timberlake and Charles Barkley after the tournament, right?

We ended up hanging out at the Cliche Cigar Lounge at Caesar’s Palace and having drinks after the round. Cigars were being smoked. Now whenever I play in these celebrity events and I see them , it's like a little reunion for us.

“ I PUSH MYSELF TO SUCCEED, AND THAT INNER COMPETITIVENESS HAS HELPED ME DO THINGS I WOULDN'T HAVE THOUGHT OF DOING."
>> Blair’s career has progressed at warp speed as a model and television personality these past few years.

How do you balance modeling, your media goals and your family? I know that you recently had a boy. Congratulations.

Thank you. I just had a second boy. So, I have two boys. A two-and-a-half-year-old and a an eightweek-old.

How do you balance all that?

To be honest, I'm still figuring that out. My career keeps me so busy, and my family keeps me busy. I really strive to try to do the best in every area, but ultimately, I am trying to figure it out. It’s a balancing act, and I don't want to let anything go. I love to work and compete and do all the things I did before I had children, but I have a lot more in my life now. So, it's cutting out some of the things that maybe aren't as importa nt.

Do you have any international courses that you like? For golf travelers, where would you recommend playing?

Teeth of the Dog in the Dominican Republic. I competed on The Big Break and there’s a beautiful course on the ocean in the Dominican gray spot. There are also some great courses in Prince Edward Island, Canada.

I always try to put that information out, those recommendations. We do a lot of travel pieces.

“THERE IS NO BETTER SETTING FOR A LIBATION THAN PEBBLE BEACH."
Photo credit Ryann Lindsey Photography >> Blair lining one up like the pro that she is.

Do you you have a go-to cocktail or a drink when capping off a memorable day of golfing?

I used to play a tournament at Pebble Beach [California] every year. After the tournament, one of my favorite moments was to bundle up on the patio of Spanish Bay with the bag pipers playing or at the Lodge overlooking the 18th hole with a nice class of cab, Champagne, or gin and tonic. There is no better setting for a libation than Pebble Beach, in my opinion.

For 2023, you're doing School of Golf . Can you elaborate a little bit more on that?

Yes. We'll be filming with School of Golf on the Golf Channel. The filming starts up pretty soon, and we will be including celebrity events. I also just finished playing in the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions alongside the Ladies Professional Golf Association [LPGA], and I'll play in a number of celebrity events throughout the year coming up.

Were you always a student of the game?

Yes. I love the game of golf, and I just loved competing and improving. I loved putting in the time and the work. When I was younger, parents would ask my dad how he got me to practice so much. He’d say, "She just loves to practice." I did. I was out there all the time. I'd be out there before school playing a couple of holes on the golf course, I'd go to school, and I'd be out there after school. When it got dark, the range would light up and we'd be out practicing.

I was obsessed with the game. If you asked me when I was 11 what I wanted to do, I'd say I wanted to be a professional golfer. Looking on that now with two young kids, it’s kind of an odd thing. To be that young and be that decisive about what you want to do. And to have that much drive.

That’s very interesting.

I think I was just meant to follow this path. When I was out on tour all those years, I thought my ultimate only goal was just to play on an LPGA tour, and that's all I wanted to do. Then I experienced change and developed who I was. Then I realized there's this other career I can do too. So, it evolved into this new career. It started as a very focused goal and has evolved.

You’re in a very small percentage of people who have such diverse opportunities.

I’m absolutely grateful. A lot of people have entered my life at certain moments and helped me in my career. Even working with Golf Channel, the timing has fallen into place. I never really knew exactly the path it was going to take, but I always just kept doing what I felt like I was meant to do.

What would you like your legacy to be, personally and professionally?

That's a hard one because who am I to say what my legacy will be? I do think just being a kind person, working really hard, being enjoyable to work with and coming prepared are definitely things that I hope stand out in my career. I feel like those things are really important. I think those things have gotten me a long way. That's kind of the core foundation of who I am, I think. Hopefully when my kids are older, they will look back and say, “My mom was a badass mom and did all these things. She had a career, and she was a great mom, and she was loving.” I absolutely love being a mom and being there for them. I hope to mold them into beautiful human beings.

ART X COMMERCE CIGAR AND SPIRITS BRANDS RETHINK COLLABORATIONS

Andy Warhol made it a thing. It was the early ‘80s. The creed was More & Bigger. Brand collaborations with artists were reborn with tongue-in-cheek decadence and intentionally blurred boundaries, launching cross-overs between worlds that had traditionally stayed separate. Art merged with merchandising. Commercialism became a culture.

Forty years after Warhol’s soup cans and Absolut Vodka paintings became iconic symbols of both Pop Art and branding, art collabs are starting to look a little different. It’s no longer enough to simply merge a brand’s identity with an artist’s style—people expect more meaningful partnerships.

Companies are imagining new ways to make an impact in the art world. From residencies and mentorships that support up-and-coming artists to collaborations that consider the cultural identity of the product, one thing is certain, 2023 will continue to revamp the intersections between creativity and commerce.

FROM BRAND PARTNERSHIPS TO BENEFACTORS

Luxury brands have always had an insider’s relationship with the art world. Certain companies take that connection further—making creative kinship part of their very identity. Having a dedicated arts and culture foundation has become the new status symbol for major European fashion houses like Louis Vuitton, Prada and Cartier. Not only do these foundations benefit the brand name by creating a lasting legacy beyond their commercial activities, but they also support the artists whose works are presented within.

Pernod Ricard, the second largest wine and spirits company in the world, has followed suit with its Paris-based Fondation Pernod Ricard and its yearlong mentorship program. The prize culminates in an exhibit at the famed photography festival—Les Rencontres de la Photographie d'Arles. Each year, the French liquor company chooses a renowned photographer for the program, who in turn selects another artist as a mentee. The program highlights the founder’s artistic vision and the company’s mission to be “creators of conviviality.”

Contemporary artists’ residencies and colonies began in the 1900s as a way for art-loving patrons to sponsor new works by their chosen creators. The residencies provided artists with a respite from the distractions of the outside world, while also putting a branded stamp on the pieces that were made while in residency. A few savvy liquor and cigar companies are using these programs to feature artists, give back to their communities and create memorable new works inspired by the ethos of their brands.

Davidoff, the Swiss luxury tobacco company, has partnered with the global art platform Art Basel since 2012 to create the Davidoff Art Initiative and Residency. The program supports artists from the

Caribbean, particularly the Dominican Republic, where the Davidoff cigar factory is located. Two types of residencies are offered—Caribbean artists can be selected to go abroad to places such as New York, Berlin, Beijing and Switzerland or artists from around the world, whose work focuses on the Caribbean, can be chosen for residencies in the DR. The initiative benefits the company’s CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) image, while also creating opportunities for dialogue between the creative landscape of the region and the cigar maker’s identity.

Glenfiddich and Glen Scotia, two world-renowned houses of single malt Scotch whisky, have also become patrons of the arts. Each summer, Glenfiddich opens the doors to its distillery in Dufftown, Scotland, to artists from around the world. Since its launch in 2002, more than 160 artists have been awarded grants of $10,000 and the opportunity to reside within the distillery, taking in its unique atmosphere and history. The resulting works are exhibited at the Glenfiddich gallery at the end of the summer.

Glen Scotia takes a different approach with a single resident artist chosen for the Scotch whisky company’s annual participation in the four-day Campbeltown Malts Festival. The festival was created in celebration of the town’s storied whisky distilleries and bottlers—Glen Scotia, Springback, Glengyle and Cadenheads. Each spring, Glen Scotia chooses an artist to create a series of works inspired by the company’s historic distillery and the Campbeltown community. The art is exhibited during the festival to draw visitors into a multidimensional Scotch experience.

ARTS AND ARTISANS UNITE

Artistic pursuits aren’t only relegated to works that can be displayed on gallery walls. Artisanship is at the heart of products such as upscale liquor, cigars and fashion accessories. New collaborations are linking artisanal luxury products in surprising ways. There’s something about cognac and leather that just go together. Maison Hennessy continues its time-honored pursuit to support the avant-garde with its newest collaboration for its Editions Rares collection. The cognac house has partnered with the famed Parisian leather maker Berluti to celebrate excellence in savoir-faire. The artistic collaboration has resulted in a limited run of 150 bottles worldwide, available through private sales and at Houses of Hennessy around the globe starting the first week of September 2023.

The Richard Hennessy x Berluti Carafe consists of a 70 cl decanter of the Maison’s most exclusive cognac, the Richard Hennessy blend, surrounded by a sculptural piece of cognac-colored leather handcrafted into an attaché case worthy of a head of state. The sculptural crystal decanter can be viewed through a peek-a-boo cutout in the side of the leather case.

Maison Hennessy is no stranger to the art of collaboration; previous partnerships with creatives have included Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry, French dancers/designers Les Twins, and Turkish-American digital artist Refik Anadol.

The name Elie Bleu has always been synonymous with fine craftsmanship and artistry. The French company known for its masterful marquetry

of wooden boxes used to house the finest items (cigars, watches…even a jar of honey for former First Lady Michelle Obama), has collaborated with numerous prestigious brands (Cohiba, Asprey of London, Montecristo) and artists (Mark Pasini and Fabien Verschaere, among others) since the brand’s inception in 1976. A recent collaboration includes a humidor created with the French photographer Réhahn, known for his cultural work and fine art photos of Vietnam, Cuba, India and Malaysia. The humidor features the artist’s portrait of Elva, an elderly Cuban woman. What’s notable about the humidor, beyond the striking artwork, is that the artist is known for his giving back projects in the countries and communities that have become integral to his work, a value that more and more luxury brands are also embracing.

The mash-ups between artists and luxury brands are far from static. The reinvention of the relationship is part of what makes the act of cocreation—whether that means painting a masterwork for a brand label or creating the perfect cigar or cognac blend to match an artist’s individual style—so exciting. Some critics may call these collabs commercial, yet the fact remains–the power that a famous brand has to disrupt the status quo and to bring art to the people can’t be overlooked. As Pernod Ricard puts it on the brand’s Fondation website: “Art is meant to be shared.”

Molly Headley holds a master’s degree in Creative Writing and Literary Criticism from the University of Oxford. Her work can be seen in a wide range of publications, from Bloomsbury Press, Glénat Editions and Al Jazeera Media to magazines focusing on Arts & Culture, Food & Beverage and Travel. She's lived and worked in Los Angeles, London, Saigon and Paris— endlessly hunting the best places to enjoy the finer things in life.

Behind the Leaf BLENDING FAMILY, FARMING AND FUTURE ONE CIGAR AT A TIME Justo Eiroa

JRE TOBACCO WAS FOUNDED BY JULIO R. EIROA. He’s the patriarch of a tobacco growing company that is one of the most respected “crop to shop” organizations in the cigar industry and he’s been one of the foremost Corojo growers for decades.

Julio is one of the most renowned figures on the cigar landscape, but his son Justo shares the same attributes that his father holds–commitment to family and an innate ability to develop blends for all palates. His passion for honoring a business with a storied past, developing elite brands in the present and securing the future of the family and business is admirable.

The company brands–Aladino, Rancho Luna and Tatascan–have seen increasing demand by consumers over the past few years.

We recently chatted with Justo about the past, present and future.

Cigar & Spirits Magazine: Please talk about your launch a few years ago. Justo Eiroa: The brand had a soft launch in 2015. In 2016 we actually had a revamp of our presentation and everything. Our product got some better packaging. Our packaging is very simple, very Cubanistic and very traditional.

How rewarding is it that you drive the business with your father, and that it continues to grow as a respected brand in the industry?

One of the things I admire about my father is that he’s probably the premier tobacco grower in the industry. Separate from him being a premier grower, we're the oldest farmers in the Central American area. At the same time, he has a palate that is magic. I kind of inherited that palate in a very humble way because he and I tend to like the same cigars. We like lots of flavor. We don't like harsh tobacco.

People like flavor. They don't like harshness. We give you so much flavor that even a person that smokes an intensely strong cigar, our cigar profile covers that palate, too. At the same time, it's mild enough that you're not going to get sick, and it's extremely clean. You don't get any aftertaste; you don't get any extra salivation. Once people try our cigars, they keep coming back. They get used to this profile of having a clean cigar with lots of flavor, and automatically they catch on. It’s a very big win. Every manufacturer wants people to be extremely loyal. It’s a great success for us.

>> The award-winning Aladino portfolio is a source of pride for the Eiroa family.

That’s really interesting because you have your go-to based on palate, but creamy, and flavorful, and aromatic go a long way. Yes. If you look at anything you do... My daughter says, ''Oh, don't say that.''

I'm going to say it now…The most popular ice cream in the world is vanilla ice cream. The most popular and best-selling cigar in the industry is the Connecticut. People like milder stuff, and we have a combination. Like you said, we give you mild, flavorful and creamy—no harshness. That for me is probably our distinct trait if they want us to know that, that we make a cigar for everybody.

You're creating a premium artisanal cigar with Aladino, and you are also creating a premium artisanal experience. Do you know right off the bat if you have a winner?

When I brought my retailers down to the farm three or four years ago before COVID, I came out with a Connecticut for everybody to try it. I said, “Guys, I have Corojo, I have Corojo Reserve, I have Habano,” and nobody picked up the other cigars. The thing is, our Connecticut is so flavorful, so creamy, so wonderful. I said, “We have a winner.” It’s probably my top-selling wrapper.

It must be rewarding to know that your various vitolas more than hold their own with dominant brands in the industry.

Yes, it is very rewarding. I think one of the things you'll see from us is now we have all the big boys trying to partner up with us. Because the quality of our tobacco, our manufacturing—we have very unique tobaccos that will really take a brand to the next level, and I think that we're able to do that. That's our forte. If you want to do a collaboration with me, you’re getting quality; you’re going to pay for it. It’s not going to be a cheap cigar.

THE HOMETOWN EDGE

FOUR SEASONS WASHINGTON, D.C., HOTEL

IF YOU’VE SPENT any length of time in Washington, D.C., you’ll notice that the city’s burgeoning dining and hospitality scenes have transformed the nation's capital into a destination spot.

The legendary Georgetown Four Seasons hotel’s aesthetic is warm, inviting and the staff makes a genuine effort to create a home away from home experience for guests. The goal is full immersion in relaxation and comfort. The hotel is a gathering spot for locals who want a “staycation” and global visitors alike.

The rooms are stylish and comfortable. The highly desired Capital Suite offers a space larger than most urban studio apartments. Diptyque Spa products and luxury linens all elevate the experience and leave one hoping to achieve a similar level of comfort at home.

The food at the hotel restaurant is artisanal and provides guests with myriad options. The hotel houses one of the most exclusive dining destinations in the city: Michael Mina’s Bourbon Steak. This highly decorated restaurant, beloved by celebrities and politicians, continues to attract the hottest crowds in town.

It’s recommended you visit Engidawork Alebachew at the restaurant’s bar. “Engi” is the maestro at the bar, and his newest creation is the “Yo, You Got Beef?” cocktail. It’s an homage to the famous wagyu beef steaks served in the restaurant.

The popular Wagyu & Whiskey tasting trio offered at the restaurant began as a seasonal promotion that coincided with the area’s popular Cherry Blossom Festival. Its success led to its inclusion in the regular menu at Bourbon Steak. Chef Curtis prepares an umami of flavor with a trio of melt-in-your-mouth Wagyu beef dishes. Three types of beef, presented with their certificate of origin, take diners on a culinary discovery tour. A trio of Japanese whiskies are the perfect complement. The restaurant’s expansive courtyard patio makes it a coveted destination for cigar lovers. Engi curates the cigar and whisky pairings from Bourbon Steak’s extensive section of fine whiskeys. The cigar menu selection is sophisticated and includes elite brands and limited release offerings. On most evenings expect the patio at Bourbon Steak to be the hottest after dinner spot in the city.

Should your travels take you to Washington, D.C., the Four Seasons Georgetown simply delivers the highest level of luxury from check-in to check-out.

C&S PROMOTIONAL

Absolutely. I think consumers are very savvy. If they are in line with a brand, they like that exclusivity. It’s aspirational. If you look at the older generation—we're talking my dad's generation, I would say 65-plus. Those are the guys that go for the real traditional brands, the Macanudos, all the other ones. One of the things we're trying to do is appeal to that younger smoker, that 25 to 30-year-old. For us to focus on the younger generation and getting my daughters involved so they can start going after that younger generation is very important. At the same time, I think our profile is unique because we cater to everybody, everything when they go out and dine or they go out and drink, it's about an experience. We provide everybody with an experience by the different wrappers that we have. The different flavor profiles without being very harsh.

Switching gears…What would you want your legacy to be, both professionally and personally?

The farming side is important there, that we help and support the communities we work with. These are the people it takes to get us there. When you look at the retail side, we want to be a partner they can count on. If you're a consumer, we want to be a company that receives feedback. We want you to have the best experience with our cigars. At the same time, we're very open-minded to all kinds of feedback.

We have farm trips now with our retailers. We like their input. I think a lot of times we get great ideas, and a lot of stuff that really resonates for both consumers and clients.

One of the things that’s very important for family–everything we do with friends and family is to set an example for the next generation on how to work. To instill a strong work ethic, be thoughtful, be courteous, and always try to protect your reputation as a good person.

What should we look out for in terms of new releases, consumer engagement in 2023?

We're working on a couple of things that are very special. We're working on an 85th-year anniversary for my father.

We’re also working on some event cigars. At events, consumers will experience that cigar, so we get feedback on those cigars and see how that new project is viewed and coming along.

We're going to be more dynamic to see what we have. Our arsenal is good. We have a lot of stuff that we could come out with. One of the things we also try to do, we first want a blend to be established and then slowly grow.

We're still pretty new when it comes to the company, so we have a lot of stores to grow into. When I provide a portfolio of five, six different blends, and four, five different sizes. You're looking at 20 to 30 facings, and not all retail humidors have that capability. We have to be very strategic on how much product that comes out. We're probably at 30 percent of all the retail stores that we want to be in, we still have two-thirds to grow.

Consumers can’t get enough of the newer premium artisanal cigar brands nowadays They really seek them out at the retail level We still have a long way to go. We're very satisfied with the work we've already seen.

INTERVIEW DERMOT MULRONEY JOURNEYS FROM YOUNG GUNS TO SCREAM VI

“Hey, buddy. It’s been a minute. Let’s catch up over a stick and a drink.”

Most of us have reached out to a friend at some point and thrown that invite out there. Maybe it’s actually been more than a minute. The thought crosses your mind that the effortless rhythm you had with your friend may no longer be there. But when you meet up, there it is: the familiar warmth, easy chatter and natural connection.

Award-winning actor Dermot Mulroney has been able to consistently connect in that same way with his audience, in what now spans more than a thirty-year career. He’s navigated Hollywood’s rough waters and carved out a stellar career, working with iconic stars like Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep, and directors like Garry Marshall and Robert Altman. His diverse acting chops have enabled him to crossover into a variety of genres. He’s starred in Westerns like Young Guns, moving dramas like Longtime Companion and romantic comedies like My Best Friend’s Wedding

In a bit of a career twist, he most recently appeared as Detective Bailey, starring with Courteney Cox, Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera, in the latest installment of the horror-mystery-thriller film, Scream VI

Dermot and I had a chance to visit and talk about Scream VI as well as life’s journeys, his career and what the future might hold. The rhythm was effortless.

THE INTERVIEW

Cigar & Spirits Magazine: Let’s start with Scream VI . It’s not the first type of film that comes to mind for you.

Dermot Mulroney: Well, I'm thrilled to be in a franchise that I've heard is really fun. It’s something I've never done before, so I was thrilled when the nice folks at Scream V I called and asked to add me to that cast. It's an incredible movie coming up on the hit Scream 5 that was a blockbuster hit.

There’s buzz on this one as well.

Yes. It's incredible to be in a movie where you know going in that it’s probably already a hit.

The cast is kind of old guard, new guard. You see Courteney Cox reprising her role, and then you also have Jenna Ortega coming up fast. That's right. Of course, Jenna’s so popular now on Wednesday. The cast is also led by Melissa Barrera in the other lead. In fact, in Scream VI, they make a pretty good case and a really strong emotional story between the sisters. The humor is deeper, and the horror is deeper. I'm joining a franchise that's really matured into something. Scream was a groundbreaking movie in 1996. It brought horror films back. It added humor with horror, and it even did a meta thing where it's talking about how you make a movie while it's showing you a movie. Now, a lot of movies do that, but I argue that Scream was one of the first. It’s really gotten good at being “Scream”, so they added me in. It has it all: blood, more action, more emotion, more humor and more horror.

“THE PARTS KEEP COMING. I'M SO BLESSED AND LUCKY. YOU'RE RIGHT, THE VARIETY OF ROLES THAT I'VE BEEN ASKED TO PLAY WHEN PEOPLE HAVE EXTENDED THEMSELVES TO GIVE YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY. I CAN'T EVEN BELIEVE IT SOME DAYS.”

52 / CIGAR & SPIRITS MARCH / APRIL 2023

And they had the smart idea to add more of you. Yes. They had the good sense of adding me as Detective Bailey on the case. [laughter]

Did you work directly with Courteney Cox?

I had the distinct pleasure to work with her in scenes, in groups and so forth. What impressed me the most wasn't just her game attitude. Of course, she's done five of these. She was on that set like it was summer camp. She was having a blast. We all were. We're really good friends.

We're on part of the investigation. You remember from Scream 5 that her character, Gale Weathers, moved to New York City, so Scream VI takes place there. In other words, the horror came to her.

Those carryover casts. They can be well-oiled machines. There’s a shorthand. The team that worked together to make Scream 5 are thick as thieves. Courteney had all of the cast, including new cast members, over to her apartment, and put on a dinner right at the beginning.

Courteney’s done so much. On some level, she’ll always be the girl in Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing In The Dark” video for me. You and I know the ‘80s. Right. Remember, that's how she was discovered.

When The Boss reaches down and pulls her out of the audience, and she dances on stage with him. Iconic. Right. Remember those things called music videos? [laughter] Anyway, it's hard to explain. She became the big thing in that moment, and she stayed the big thing for years.

That moment right there. How could you not have a crush on her? You mentioned music videos.

Yes. I remember when MTV actually played music videos.

Speaking of MTV. I know you worked with Winona Ryder again last year. Yes, Gone In The Night.

You and Winona were nominated for an MTV Award For Best Kiss in How to Make an American Quilt in 1996. You both peaked right there, so young. You could never top that, of course.

[laughter] Yes. That was a peak for me. [laughs] Maybe for Winona Ryder it was her two Academy Award nominations. I’m not sure. [laughs] But, we were honored and touched to have been nominated for “Best Kiss.”

WWW.CIGARANDSPIRITS.COM / 53
THE INTERVIEW

I know some people who’ve kissed both of you, and rumor has it that you’re the better kisser.

[laughter]

Of the two of us? That's recently been determined?

Correct.

Oh, that's so cool. Funny. [laughs]

You know, social media and all that.

Social media, right. It makes the old, young. It restarts old embers and turns them into flames.

Undoubtedly. I know you have a busy 2023, and there a couple of things on the horizon you can’t quite mention yet.

Just to tease a lead, I play a high-profile coach in a movie that takes place in the '90s. Some of the reasons I can't tell you what's coming up in 2023 is I'm now getting these shows where there are spoilers. They're having me play the bad guy now, too.

Wait. Men of a certain age like us can still be leading men. Well, maybe you more than me, I hate to admit.

[laughs] The parts keep coming. I'm so blessed and lucky. You're right, the variety of roles that I've been asked to play when people have extended themselves to give you the opportunity to play. I can't even believe it some days.

The women I’ve spoken to in advance of our interview, they automatically go to My Best Friend’s Wedding . You make them swoon. And not just that one. Thank you. Now, I'm back in rom-coms because I can be the dad. [laughs] Then 20 years after that I'll be the guy on oxygen in the hospice care scene. [laughter]

We talked about My Best Friend’s Wedding . The different notes you’ve hit in your career is impressive. What are your thoughts about Longtime Companion now? It was groundbreaking.

Thank you. That one lives on. I ran into Bruce Davison who was nominated for an Academy Award for that scene with Mark Lamos, as he said, “You can let go.” That scene still kills me.

Bruce Davison is so underrated. There are many that I've worked with that are somewhat unsung. He's probably tops on that list.

It’s such a beautifully written film. Yes. Craig Lucas and Norman René who directed the movie. There were many incredible moments.

“BECOMING A PROFESSIONAL CELLIST AND HOW IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IS ITS OWN TALE THAT WOULD TAKE TOO LONG TO TELL. A COUPLE OF KEY PEOPLE CAME IN AT KEY MOMENTS, AND IT ALLOWED ME TO CONTINUE DOING SOMETHING I WAS ALREADY GOOD AT.”

WWW.CIGARANDSPIRITS.COM / 55

You've probably talked about this ad nauseam, but you’re a highly lauded cellist. Becoming a professional cellist and how it actually happened is its own tale that would take too long to tell. A couple of key people came in at key moments, and it allowed me to continue doing something I was already good at. I studied hard as a student, was a top student, expert cellist and then it just came back to me in multiple ways and even different types of music. Even now, I have two dates this month while I'm in town where I get to record for [composer and director] Michael Giacchino.

How wonderful.

He’s an incredible maestro who's one of our best American scoring composers right now.

You’ve played in orchestras for several films now. There are a couple of movies I've played on that I'm actually in. I just did one recently. That's where I play the coach. Then I was called in by Mark Irwin, the great composer, to play a day on that. That's happened a couple of times, but the big movie scores that I played on that were the most exciting, that's for Michael Giacchino in his orchestra. Planet of the Apes, Mission Impossible 3, 4, and 5. I played that famous Mission Impossible theme on cello in a five-four.

The Incredibles 2 was probably the last big one that I did. It's been a couple of years with the shutdown and stuff. That one blew my mind because it's that big band horn section. They had about 100 horns in that room and a small string section that I was included in. That was mind-blowing to hear musicians of that caliber.

C&S PROMOTIONAL

It's such a gift to be able to share one talent. Two must be a blessing for you. I'm so humbled that I'm still here to even answer your questions with gratitude. This is where I'm at. You brought up My Best Friend's Wedding, and other movies, but that movie in particular has matured on the vine, it's aged on the shelf. It's incredible what people bring to me when they see me from that movie and come up to me. It means something to them. I feel it already coming at me. Other actors could tell you they know what movie they're going to bring up when they come out to talk. You have a sense of where the person is coming from even before it because we've tapped wires for people over the years. That won't be alone if it was only that movie. It's just made me more and more grateful. I can't quite define it. I'm sure other performers have trouble too, but it's a real feeling and it pervades my day.

Thank you, Dermot, for being so forthcoming. My pleasure, Randy. Thanks a ton for having me. Appreciate it.

A CITY-BY-CITY GUIDE FOR SMOKE AND DRINK SEEKERS

VERTIGO-INDUCING SKYSCRAPERS surrounded by the whoosh of scooters, old-world dive bars and gleaming resorts, futuristic fashions and spiritual sabbatical—the juxtaposition of hypermodernism and steadfast tradition is stronger in Asia than anywhere else. Anyone who’s ever passed the day bartering at a wet market, and the night downing dim sum above Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour, knows that a visit to Asia will be a lesson for your senses. If you also happen to indulge in the pleasures of fine cigars and glasses of the “good stuff” then get your inner hedonist ready for Chinese Baijui, Japanese drams, and chili-infused cocktails that will slow-burn down to the last sip. Pair Asia’s booze-infused traditions with the fact that more than half of the world's 1.1 billion smokers live in the region (with the largest cigar market growth in the last 10 years), and it’s a sure-fire recipe for a good time. Now that travel restrictions have lightened, head East to experience a whole new world of spirits and smoke.

>> Hong Kong is a sight to behold.

SAIGON

Though it isn’t the capital of Vietnam, Saigon is the country’s hub for all things fun-loving. District 1 is home to historic hotels like Hotel Caravelle, a journalist haunt during the Vietnam War, and Hotel Continental, the iconic setting for Graham Greene’s 1955 novel The Quiet American. While it's fun to chase Greene’s shadow through the city, D1 is also where you’ll find landmarks like the Saigon Opera House, luxury shopping, and 151 Dong Khoi. Tucked into a small alley off the main street, this address contains everything you’ll need to while away your afternoon. Seek out the Art Arcade sign above a colonial-era hem passageway. Up the rickety stairwell at the back, and you’ll find the collaborative space that houses Kohei’s bar, Brother’s barbershop, Lacaph specialty café, and the Saigon Cigar Club. In its former location, the club hosted the Cigar Smoking World Championship Saigon Qualifier in 2018. A good selection of smokes is stocked in the humidor bar, where Japanese star bartender Kohei can be found swinging shakers. We recommend his “Smoke Affair.” The cocktail’s combo of Balvenie 12-year-old single malt, Grand Marnier, and orange bitters in a smoke-filled glass will marry beautifully with your favorite fullbodied cigar.

In Vietnam, anything can be counterfeited, including alcohol and smokes, so buying and consuming at a reputable place are of utmost importance. And when it comes to cigars, there’s no place more legit in town than the new La Casa del Habano, which opened in 2021. It’s one of 160 Habano concept stores in the world and is run by the Avanti-Group for the Vietnamese market. The group is the official distributor of Diageo alcohol products in the country (note the Walker Whisky boutique next door to the lounge), as well as being the only official vendor of Habanos, Davidoff and Arturo Fuentes. A mind-blowing 7-meter-long humidor is filled to the brim, so you’re sure to find your perfect puff.

If you’re looking for a smoke friendly place to lay your head, look no further than the Sofitel Saigon Plaza, on the posh Le Duan boulevard. The lobby includes the Habanos Specialist boutique, also run by the Avanti Group. On the 3rd floor, you’ll find the swanky Ministry of Men. The bar’s decor is opulent enough for a movie set, complete with headshots of some of the most famous faces throughout history. Craft cocktails created in honor of iconic personalities are presented in equally cinematic terms, like the Jesse James libation served in a miniature banker’s safe.

Tobacco is a major part of local customs in Vietnam, making it one of the friendliest countries for smokers in the Asia Pacific region. While most Vietnamese smoke cigarettes or Thuoc Lao (a potent high-nicotine tobacco puffed through a long wooden pipe), cigar smoking is gaining in popularity among the upper-class. You’re allowed to enter Vietnam with up to 100 cigars or 500 grams of tobacco, duty-free.

BANGKOK

Bangkok famously never sleeps. Its nightlife feeds the maze-like streets, where tuk tuks overtake Bugattis. Bangkok’s reputation for being the best place to party in Asia has never waned, but that distinction has gone a step further since Thailand’s recent decriminalization of marijuana in 2022 led to an additional influx of tourism into a city that is already the most visited in the world. A stay at the Four Seasons Chao Phraya will offer you the luxe accommodations you have been seeking. The area is where you’ll find some of Bangkok’s most luxurious shopping alongside colonial-era buildings. Beyond its famous hospitality, the Four Seasons Chao Phraya also prides itself on BKK Social Club, voted Thailand’s #1 bar on Asia's 50 Best Bars list 2022. Run by mixology master Philip Bischoff, the club leans into the glamour of 1920s Buenos Aires, with plush leather booths that will wrap around your entourage like a hug from a posh uncle. We recommend taking to the terrace, where you’ll find a full-service cigar bar. Pair the “Bananazo” cocktail, a grown-up punch with bourbon, salted banana, chocolate bitters and caviar with a Montecristo No. 4, to complement the tropical tipple’s sweetness. Bischoff focused on three P’s to create his menu: People + Place = Party. Let’s add a Puro to that list, and we’ve got perfection.

Another hotel/bar option includes The Blind Pig at Hotel Muse (part of Accor’s MGallery Collection), which sells premium cigars such as Montecristos and Romeo Y Julieta Churchills. For a larger selection, head to Cohiba Atmosphere, a Habanos concept store, in the Pathum Wan District. This oldschool cigar bar has a walk-in humidor with more than 250 Cuban selections.

Smoking laws in Thailand are strict compared to neighboring countries. Public smoking can earn you a 5,000 baht fine (approx. $153 USD). Electronic cigarettes and vaping are illegal and could result in additional fines or even imprisonment. Tourists may enter the country with 250g of cigars or tobacco per adult, duty free.

HONG KONG

Skyscrapers, luxury malls and the influx of business travelers have cemented Hong Kong’s reputation as a must-see location. But it's the eclectic duality of the city that keeps us coming back. From plush cigar lounges to spirited market streets scented with the smoky-sweet smell of char siu pork, a visit to Hong Kong wouldn’t be complete without some serious eating followed by a drink and a smoke.

The rules for traveling with tobacco products leave voyagers a narrow window for error. You’re only allowed to enter the country duty-free with 19 cigarettes, 1 cigar, or 25 grams of tobacco. That said, Hong Kong is filled with cigar shops, where you can stock up in country, so there’s no need to pay extra to bring in your favorite sticks. One of the most popular is the flagship Davidoff of Geneva boutique in the Landmark, a luxury shopping center. The boutique isn’t just any stop n’ shop; it pulls in the third highest sales of all the Davidoff stores in the world. A commemorative special edition Winston Churchill was launched in 2019, featuring a Landmark 2019 ring encircling the puro. Another special edition to ask about is the Davidoff Year of the Rabbit in celebration of the 2023 Lunar New Year.

At Bertie HK Lounge & Terrace, connoisseurs can relax amongst likeminded travelers and locals with a variety of Arturo Fuente, Ashton, Joya de Nicaragua, Eiroa, Mombacho, Flor de Selva, Cumpay and Toscano, alongside Habanos, vintage Cubans and the recently released Confidenciaal cigars. Bertie has the largest selection of ‘New World’ cigars in Hong Kong and possibly in Asia. The lounge is a tailored retreat kitted out with leather armchairs, deep green walls, and antique Chinese artwork. Get comfy with one of Bertie’s gin concoctions, like the classic Negroni or Old-Fashioned, made with Oriental Cigar Gin, which was specifically blended to be enjoyed with a fine smoke.

HONG KONG

A four-minute walk from Bertie’s will take you past the Red Chamber Cigar Divan, a Habanos specialist, and to the newly relocated Bo Innovation. The restaurant touts two Michelin stars and bills themselves as the best X-treme Chinese cuisine in the city with their molecular take on pop art irreverence. Cigars can be purchased in the restaurant and enjoyed on the terrace with a glass of a traditional Baijiu alcohol. Alternatively, a cup of smoky oolong tea would pair beautifully with the menu of premium cigars, including Cohiba Maduro 5 Genios and Padron 85 Years Family Reserve, among others.

It would be remiss to talk about merrymaking in Hong Kong without mentioning Macau. Just a 50-minute TurboJet ride from the Hong Kong Ferry Terminal, Macau is a gambler’s paradise, pulling in more bank than Vegas. These days, you might find fewer high rollers than in years past, since Covid regulations ravaged the tourism industry, but the dice are still rollin’. Cigars are a niche market, but a stop by The Cigar Emporium at Wynn hotel will stock you up for a night of cards and chips.

TOKYO

Mention Tokyo, and we can’t help but visualize Scarlett Johansson in a pink wig singing karaoke with fellow Lost in Translation star, Bill Murray. But this capital city is about so much more than lost souls, neon rush and cat cafés. There’s a niche for every passion, especially when it comes to whisky and cigars. Japanese drams have been having a moment for a while now. Brands like Suntory and Nikka started producing for domestic consumption in the early 20th century, but they only gained in popularity for international audiences in the beginning of the 21st, when they started to dominate competitions. Now, these complex and elegant spirits are sought out world-wide. A 2020 indoor smoking ban added a layer of difficulty to finding a great place to have a dram and a draw, but there are a few stand-outs if you know where to look. Start your drinks experience at the Tokyo Whisky Library. Here you’ll find more than 1200 types of whisky, Scotch and bourbon. The bottles line floor to ceiling shelves like a collection of beautifully lit books. The one drawback is that since Japan enacted its indoor smoking ban, the bar has been a smoke-free zone. Luckily, there are several cigar lounges 10 minutes away. Habano

Vegas is a membership only lounge/shop, but the registration is simple. #1. Prove you’re over 20 years old and #2. Love cigars! Bring an ID and wait for approval. It’s worth the trouble because the club is populated with hardcore cigar smoking regulars, and you’re apt to find some rare, aged sticks and limited editions.

Cigar and Rock, located in the Cerulean Tower Tokyo Hotel, features a selection of cigars from various origins, some truly special sakes, other spirits and rotating musical acts. Pair the delicate sake rice wine with a smoke such as the earthy and peppery Davidoff Exclusive made for the Travel and Retail market in Japan 2021. Check the stocks at the Davidoff of Geneva boutiques in Ginza and Minato City. The final question is where to stay? The Palace Hotel Tokyo offers 5-star comforts overlooking the gardens of the Tokyo Imperial Palace and you’ll have access to the Royal Bar with its plush burgundy velvet and dark wood surroundings. Known for their classic cocktails like martinis and negronis, the bar is run by master bartender Manabu Otake, who won the Diageo Reserve World Class tournament in Japan. Customers are invited to retire to the hotel’s smoking room to indulge in their favorite sticks, since laws don’t permit smoking within the bar.

ICONIC BRAND SPOTLIGHT HIRSCH WHISKEY THE BEST BOURBON YOU’LL NEVER TASTE

NI1974, A.H. HIRSCH first commissioned his now legendary bourbon A.H HIRSCH Reserve 16-Year-Old, considered by some to be the best American bourbon ever produced. In the book, The Best Bourbon You’ll Never Taste, author Charles K. Cowdery details the story of Adolph H. Hirsch. An investment banker and philanthropist who dedicated part of his career to rescuing troubled distilleries, Hirsch invested in the Schaefferstown Distillery and commissioned only 400 barrels of the A.H HIRSCH Reserve 16-Year-Old. Today, this whiskey is extremely rare, with bottles selling for as much as $7,000 among private collectors. I recently had the good fortune of tasting this incredible whiskey at an A.H. HIRSCH event at Joshua Tree National Park in California. Sipping this complex, richly flavored and wellbalanced spirit felt like a real privilege.

Although HIRSCH is most famous for this rare Reserve, the company is still a formidable player in today’s bourbon world. The company’s Bivouac was recently awarded the 2022/2023 Winter Editors’ Choice from Whisky Advocate, while HIRSCH, The Cask Strength expression was awarded 91 points. HIRSCH The Horizon was also awarded gold by The Spirits Business in the Global Spirits Design Masters for The Horizon and The Best-NonKentucky Bourbon for Batch 0320 by whiskies awards in 2021.

We sat down with Kevin Aslan, Innovations Distiller at HIRSCH Selected Whiskeys, and Luis Rivas Ball, Brand Lead of American Whiskeys, to learn more about the brand.

Cigar & Spirits Magazine: How did you became affiliated with HIRSCH?

Kevin: I’m the Innovation Distiller at Hotaling & Co., based in San Francisco, and over the last 10 years, most of my time here has been focused on Old Potrero Rye Whiskey and innovation brands, under the mentorship of Master Distiller Bruce Joseph. When Hotaling & Co. decided to relaunch HIRSCH Selected Whiskeys, they asked me to lead the whiskey development for HIRSCH.

“IT’S BEEN UNBELIEVABLY REWARDING TO BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF HIRSCH, A BRAND THAT PUTS PASSION AND DISCOVERY AT THE FOREFRONT, SINCE THE VERY BEGINNING OF ITS RELAUNCH AND AN HONOR TO LEAD PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT AND BLENDING.” -KEVIN

How rewarding is it for you that you blend HIRSCH Whiskey and that it’s now recognized as an iconic brand?

Kevin: It’s been an enormous privilege to represent HIRSCH. I’ve been closely following the brand for over a decade and have always admired the range of whiskies the brand releases, particularly the iconic A.H. HIRSCH Reserve 16-Year-Old. It’s been unbelievably rewarding to be an integral part of HIRSCH, a brand that puts passion and discovery at the forefront, since the very beginning of its relaunch and an honor to lead production development and blending.

Tell us a bit about the history of the company and how that informs the brand today.

Luis: Hotaling & Co. acquired HIRSCH 30 years ago when the company was founded. In 2020, the company renamed the brand HIRSCH Selected Whiskies. Hotaling and Co., originally named Anchor Distilling Company, was established in 1993 and is credited with releasing America's first craft whiskey, Old Potrero Straight Rye Whiskey, after Prohibition. In 2010, Anchor Distilling Company was sold to a business partnership that included Tony Foglio and London's oldest wine and spirit merchant, Berry Bros. & Rudd. In 2017, Anchor Distilling became Hotaling & Co, a nod to one of Anchor Distilling's most beloved small batch whiskies—Old Potrero Hotaling's Whiskey—and to the San Francisco legend A.P. Hotaling, who came out West during the Gold Rush and quickly became one of the most reputable spirits dealers in the country. This history drives home how the HIRSCH brand story and ethos is ingrained in exploration, and how that’s carried throughout the entire company.

HIRSCH’s portfolio has been lauded for its artisanal craftsmanship and many years of blending to a high standard. What are the unique aspects that make the spirit sought after?

Kevin: HIRSCH has been sourcing and curating whiskeys since it was founded, allowing the brand and our team the freedom to access the very best whiskeys out there. With no limit to a grain style or mashbill recipe, our creativity is limitless, and innovation is threaded throughout all we do. In addition, by partnering with distilleries around the country, each release is a collector’s bottle in its own right, as the grains, barrels, blending and distilling methods won’t be replicated again in a new expression.

Who is the typical HIRSCH drinker these days?

Luis: HIRSCH is designed for the modern explorer, trailblazers, and those who toast to the journey and the great outdoors. A

seasoned connoisseur knows the brand as an iconic and respected name in whiskey due to the critical acclaim surrounding A.H. HIRSCH Reserve 16-year-old and trusts that HIRSCH will always bring something exceptional to your glass. For new consumers, HIRSCH focuses on exploring new possibilities and so those that are entering the world of whiskey naturally gravitate to the brand.

What are the most popular sellers?

Kevin: Our permanent expressions, HIRSCH The Horizon, debuted in 2020 and more recently, HIRSCH The Bivouac, a 100-Proof Bourbon from Bardstown, Kentucky was released in September 2022, both have received great reception from the public. Our limited edition releases such as HIRSCH The Single Barrel, aged a minimum 6-years in Bardstown Kentucky, and this past Fall’s release, HIRSCH The Cask Strength a bold bourbon finish in 30 years-old Hine Cognac barrels, have also each been met with great enthusiasm. Overall, each release really has its own standout moment, and we find the public really gravitates towards our ethos of exploration and discovery with these expressions.

What should we be on the lookout for in 2023 and beyond?

Luis: 2023 is shaping up to be an exciting year for us at HIRSCH. We will be launching two new expressions and will also showcase the portfolio at many consumer events such as WhiskyX in cities across the country. The brand‘s Chase Your Horizon Campaign, will also be launching across many markets in the US. In addition, we are always encouraging consumers to join us on our journey on social media where we always keep the exploration spirit alive with giveaways to amazing adventure destinations. Lastly, we have expanded into more markets including Canada west provinces, Duty Free and soon into Australia. The interest in United States Whiskeys is now universal, and craft whiskeys like ours will surely have a place for those looking beyond traditional brands.

SOHO PRO TIPS

When dealing with egg white cocktails…

• Always dry shake first (no ice) with all the ingredients to emulsify the egg white which will produce the frothiness that egg white cocktails are known for. After the dry shake is complete, add ice and shake again to chill the drink. This technique will produce the proper froth.

When looking to add some zest to your cocktail…

• Using bitters is an easy way to incorporate new and interesting flavors without a lot of work or disrupting the balance of a cocktail.
