ABOUT TINA HARGADEN
Tina Hargaden has been teaching French, Spanish, Reading, Language Arts, English Language Development, and Social Studies since 2003. She holds a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction and has pursued extensive training in literacy and language acquisition. She is the author of Foundations: A Natural Approach to the (Transition) Year and Stepping Stones, a literacy-focused curricular framework for language development courses and programs. Tina has presented and keynoted at many workshops and state, regional, and national conferences, and consulted with many departments, districts, and teachers. She is the founding director of the World Language Proficiency Project.
High leverage, transferable skills that are essential for quality instruction — go slow, make it compelling, make it personalized. Talk to and with the kids, about stuff they’re interested in, using comprehensible language.
- Tashia Maureen, Spanish and English Language Development
The training provided me with a system, instead of just the next fun idea to try to jam into a class period. I feel like I am teaching real language. The oral language used for authentic communicative purposes, culminating in "writing and discussing" has changed everything for me. Students learn the words because they own the content and the new words pop up as they need them. Very natural for the brain. My Level 1 students are producing output I never thought possible.
- Jennifer Smith, German
THE WORLD LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY PROJECT
Founded in 2017, the World Language Proficiency Project is a for-profit curriculum development and teacher training partner to teachers and districts worldwide. Through our Free Year of Curriculum, developed for and in collaboration with teachers during the Covid-19 crises, our Summer Institutes, and our Partner Schools program, we support educators in implementing the Stepping Stones curricular framework, a multi-year, spiral framework for developing students' communicative language proficiencies and crosscurricular literacy. We are ethically and materially committed to environmental and social justice and their deep intersection with racial justice and the eradication of White Supremacy Culture in our educational systems, and our most important mission is to equip educators with tools and instructional frameworks to ensure equitable access to successful outcomes for all students, in particular Black students, Indigenous students, students of color, and students from historicallyoppressed, marginalized, and underserved communities, including the LGBTQ+ community. We actively seek and prioritize partnerships with educators and leaders of color, and those whose work impacts students from communities of color, and we can get pretty creative about how to work out the financial arrangements. Contact us at pd@ciliftoff.com to see how we can work together to build a more just, equitable, and multilingual world.
This workshop was so valuable. I learned, and will implement, how to plan a non-fiction lesson around some of the topics our textbook covers. I am not using the textbook, but with these strategies, I can use the topics. I teach Spanish 3 & 4, so I will use your scaffolded guides to writing and your support materials for oral practice. All the ideas with using photos and matching up cards for comparing and contrasting will just further support the students. I have seen so much from my students this year and your workshop has re-inspired me and helped me to see how to build proficiency in the upper levels. - Kay Cee Mills, Spanish 3 and 4
This workshop helped me understand how to scaffold output writing and speaking for my upper levels and develop a unit structure based around content, so I have more of a plan to move from building background knowledge and providing language input, to output. I feel well-equipped to plan units for levels 4-5 and my IB/AP classes. I want to invite our dual language teachers (elementary and middle) school teachers to this training, as well as our ESL/ELD content area teachers. - Adrienne Brandenburg, Spanish and English Language Development
This framework lays out the stepping stones to run a proficiency-based program founded on brain-based best practices leading to stunning results and success for students and teachers.
I have always known
teaching could be like this. - Stephanie Connor Mignone, German
