Frida Kahlo was an important Mexican artist who was born, lived and died in Mexico City, the Mexican capital, in a house painted in bright and intense colors. The house is called La Casa Azul in Spanish, which means the Blue House in English. Today her home is a museum visited by millions of admirers every year.

Her mother was a meztiza Mexican womanof indigenous (or native) and Spanish ancestry - and her father was a Mexican nationalized German immigrant. Frida had three sisters. She was born on July 6, 1907.

She was of mixed race, that is to say, a Mexican of indigenous-Spanish ancestry. Her native ancestry was Zapoteca, a native group of the Oaxacan region. The women of this culture are called the Tehuanas. The Tehuanas wear very distinct, traditional clothing, as you can see in this photo of Matilde's class in 1890.

In 1904. Three years before Frida's birth, the family moved downtown to Mexico City, to Casa Azul - 247 London Street.

Frida contracted polio, a very serious illness, in 1913 when she was 6 years old. One of her legs was damaged by polio. Frida had a lot of operations and wore a brace around her leg. She had to stay in bed for nine months. To regain strength, her father pushed her to practice various sports, such as football and boxing. These sports were not common for girls in Mexican society in 1913.

Frida was interested in radical politics for the rest of her life. She united with communism and got to know Leon Trotsky, a prominent Russian communist and revolutionary.

The bus was completely destroyed in the accident. Some passengers died, and many people suffered serious injuries, such as Frida. Her spine, collarbone, right leg, and right foot were fractured. Frida had multiple surgeries (at least 32) to repair the injuries she suffered in this horrific accident. Here is a drawing of the accident that Frida illustrated in her diary.
Frida started making art after the bus crash. She never went back to school. She dedicated herself to Communist art and politics.

Diego was a muralist, which means he painted murals (paintings on the walls). Here is a mural by Diego titled "La Historia de México" (The History of Mexico) at the National Palace in Mexico City.

Through her art, she has explored questions of her identity as a Mexican, meztizo woman. In her selfportraits, she often wore traditional clothes and used bright colors. They say Frida is the selfie mother because she loved painting herself so much in her self-portraits.

For example, in this self-portrait, Raíces ("Roots" in English), we see Frida with roots coming from her body. The roots are a symbol of the tragedies that Frida suffered during her life.
