MY ROLE GROUP D

4

For my group event research I was involved in Group D. For our research we were asked to research The Barbican in London. Due to the Corona Virus pandemic we could only use online resources to do so. We were asked to look at multiple aspects of the gallery but I choose to focus my research on the online presence/ website of the Barbican. I found the website for the Barbican really useful and a lot better than pervious Irish gallary websites I had looked at, sometimes only showing the event dates and with nothing more to offer. In my write up I cover a summery of the points made in my presentations and more detailed analysis of some. Attacted to this is screenshots of my miro boards with more information on my persona write ups and more secondary images.

Detailed Look at Websites Exhibiton Info. Barbican.co.uk

BARBICAN .ORG.UK

The homepage includes a GIF displaying areas of the building and examples of the collections they have on display. Engaging and Nicely Designed. It’s easy to begin navigation with the top menu bar with the information broken down. Within the Nav bar you can begin exploring into various other pages such as the ‘What’s On’ section which shows you the types of exhibitions that take place and you can filter down to find something that might interest you. Each section is colour coated per catagory and applied throughout the entire site. Within the Exhibition Guide there is a another menu bar which brings you to information about each room of the exhibtion including maps. Very useful info and each a interesting read. As well as looking at the website I wrote the persona titled “Neil”, this was based around a young kid who is very interested in social media and isn’t too interested in the actual exhibitons himself, I think this website/ mobile website would be well suited for him as he can find podcasts and videos that might be more suited to his attention span.

INSIGHTS REFLECTION

What I really liked from the website was their fantastic online collection. In the online collection there is Articles, Podcasts, Books, Spotify Playlists and Videos all related to content displayed in their gallarys. They also have specific content for each exhibition currently showing or exhibitions about to be on show. I thoughts this was great because I love to do my research before going to an exhibition and make a whole day of it and I thought this feature really allowed you to completely engross is the subject matter prior to your visit to the gallary. Another great aspect to this is that some people may not enjoy the typical audio guides found at exhibitions and would prefer to just be in the moment during their visit and I found that this type of online content would prevent certain audiences from missing out on certain aspects of a exhibtion. I also this this online content is great for a more tech savy generation who might enjoy as a natural right of passage to follow their experiences into the online world. Their online presence such as their instagram page really shows this language of being current and in the design world. It reminded me of sites such as “it’s nice that” and I think their whole visual langauge is consistant across all their platforms.

Online Responsive Website. Barbican.co.uk

Example of outside Wayfinding - Illuminated RHA- For Example.

ONE LAST DANCE FORMAT & SITE My exhibiton is based around Rave Culture from the 80s until 2020. One Last Dance focus’s on highlighting the key connections between the atmosphere of rave’s as seen in photography and the visual assests that emerge from the Graphic Design ephemera. I plan on having it broken into two rooms with the photography in one and the graphic design work in the other. I would need a enclosed space such as the main exhibiton space in the barbican displayed in the photograph on the left. Atmosphere and mood is a very important aspect to my exhibiton as the content is about rave/club culture which is atmosphere dependant, therefore I would like the rooms to have ambient techno music playing and the lighting to represent that of a dark club with still being able to see all the works on display.

Modern Art Indie Film with Electronic Score: Climax.

90’s Rave Classic Cult Movie: Human Traffic.

Old School Experimental Aphex Twin

Contemporary Dance Barker DJ

Theatre Barbican.

My main thing that I took away from my reasearch on the Barbican is the multimedia aspect to their exhibtions and online collection. This is something I really wanted to follow over into my exhibition. Another feature of my exhibiton is having a space for watching movies that link in with the Rave time peroid. I would like to have a selection of movies ranging from cult classics to more contemporary art-house film feature a electronic dance music score as illustrated in the left. Aswell as this I would like to curate a spotify playlist that guests can access prior or following their visit to get them in the mood of the exhibition/ to educate them on the music from the time peroid and music created that was influenced by this.

Yayoi Kusama Tate.

I would also like to have light installations such as the Yayoi Kusama exhibition illustrated to the right. I think this would really add to the overall mood and experience of the exhibition. Aswell as these light installations I would like to have an interactive screen where people could upload pictures from their experiences at Raves. I think this would cater for the older audience as well as entertain the younger audience. In my persona write ups I wanted to cover each type of person that may come such as young people who are interested in Rave/ Nightlight culture at the moment, Past ravers and Graphic designers. I tried to include a level of interaction for each of these.
