CIM’s purpose is to be the trusted authority & collective source for advancing mineral industry knowledge, guidelines & best practices. In support of this purpose, we collaborate with other national and global societies to advance a more sustainable future. Many of the challenges we face are not new, but their level of importance and speed at which we need to address them has increased dramatically. In an industry where protection of the eco systems, safety of our people and successful deployment of capital have created an environment of conservatism, the rapidly changing landscape of issues we face has, at times, left us uncertain about what the future looks like. How might organizations address diversity and inclusion within their ranks? Where will the next generation of employees come from? Can net-zero targets be effectively integrated throughout mining operations? Who will be affected as mines are automated and digitalized? CIM, its branches, societies, committees, events, professional development and educational programming is moving the dial on issues of Diversity and Inclusion, Health and Safety and the future workforce. We have the reach and vehicles to engage industry stakeholders, discover, examine and share meaningful insight, and drive innovation for the evolution of ideas. Together, we keep the minerals and metals industry progressing toward common goals. If these final months of 2021 have taught us anything, it’s that we can overcome any obstacles that arise as long as we maintain an adaptable and a problem-solving mindset. To that end, we utilized our extensive outreach and engagement to identify and respond to a number of common issues impacting our industry. We have redefined the model for standards, best practices and guidelines, audited and optimized the user experience, streamlined constituent and member management and more. We are an important connector and conduit for critical insights and expertise that advance the level and quality of technical and industry knowledge, and we do it within a completely collaborative and neutral space. This report shines light on that work. The products, initiatives and programs CIM delivers support and enable our industry’s priorities. Partnership is at the heart of our work to curate knowledge, drive innovation, develop expertise, recognize excellence, engage society and foster connections.

DRIVING INNOVATION Successfully navigating change management and the management of change requires a collaborative space where thought leadership can lead to innovation and advancement. Our partnerships allow that deep work to happen. CIM-supported initiatives inspire the industry to imagine the future of mining – whether it’s examining the adoption of digital, addressing the labour market shortage, or simplifying project execution.

DEVELOPING EXPERTISE Our work in developing standards, guidelines and best practices in conjunction with workforceand community-focused workshops, courses, programs and events supply the framework needed to collectively advance our industry and create sustainable prosperity together.
“We often think outside the box and are more innovative because we have to be. This can lead to many more great careers. Neurodivergent people are in all walks of life, in all kinds of jobs – engineering, finance, quality control. All of those things are beneficial to the mining industry.”

– Kelly Bron Johnson, Autistic and Hard of Hearing Self-Advocate, founder of Completely Inclusive
“A lot of Canadian businesses, especially in the mining sector, are doing their part in terms of reconciliation by investing in Indigenous students through training and mentorship programs and other areas of investment. While they might be small investments, they have significant impact with First Nations communities.”

STUDENTS ASK: Q: How do you grow and maintain your professional network? A: “The best for me is attending conferences. You get to know people and you end up seeing them at each conference you attend.” – François Landry, Senior Partner, ERM: Environmental Resources Management
Q: What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned in your career? A: “Flexibility is the key to success. We must persevere and be adaptable and agile to be responsive to changing circumstances. I’d also say to treat every experience as a learning experience and every person you meet as someone to learn from. Push yourself beyond your comfort zone and aim to assume more responsibility. Be respectful of everyone you meet. This industry, while global in scale, is actually a very small world. Very importantly, take the opportunity to volunteer with an organization. Not only will it help others, it will expand your network and horizons and make you a better person.”
Q: How do I make connections in the industry as a new Canadian? A: “There are, no doubt, many challenges when job-seeking in a new country. How you can get started is to first find people who have a similar background to you – people who are new to Canada as well, maybe even from the same part of the world that you’re from because there’s a natural degree of trust already there thanks to the shared experience and culture. Then look for companies that are open-minded and interested in hiring from all walks of life.”
