Welcome to the April issue of in.Design!
We’ve two talented interiors professionals talking to us this month – for in.Brief Agnese De Masi of Suna Interior Design shows us around the marketing suite she created for London Square, for their new development at the Star and Garter in Richmond Hill, and Paul Rogers, the business development director of Rhubarb Solutions, opens his diary in Week in the Life.
Our two in.Vogue features focus on bathrooms and flooring this month; deep wall colours really set off a white bathroom suite – I especially like the inky blue on page 24 – but then I’ve never thought that dark colours make a room appear smaller either, the drama of a big colour seems to add a depth that creates a feeling of endlessness.
For rooms where wood itself may not be the best flooring material, but you still want to achieve its lovely natural finish, what do you do? We show you some wood effect flooring in vinyl, LVT, and porcelain stoneware that’ll tick all the designer boxes!
And in BIID news, they have announced a new protected title for professional interior designers, BIID Registered Interior Designer® – look out for RegID after the names of those who qualify! Meanwhile it’s been confirmed that the BIID’s post conference ‘by invitation only’ Summer Drinks Party will be sponsored by Cornflake, taking place at Cornflake’s state-of-the-art show apartment at 41 Windmill St, London.
If you’d like to appear in Week in the Life, or have a great project you’d like to share with our readers, please get in touch, we’d love to hear from you!

A Week In The Life Of Paul Rogers Paul Rogers is the business development director of Rhubarb Solutions, a contract seating and furniture manufacturer based in Bicester, Oxfordshire. Paul joined the business just under six months ago and has over 20 years of knowledge and experience in the furniture industry.
A stunning view from the riverside hotel
The last few months have brought a whole host of new and exciting opportunities and a busy schedule which involved building a new sales team, launching new product ranges, a new website as well as business trips abroad.
in.HIS LIFE : 07
Paul Rogers Monday Monday starts off early (and slow thanks to the usual accident black spots) with a two hour journey round the M25 and up the M1. My first visit of the day is in Birmingham to sign off a large installation that we have just undertaken for a new National HQ. We have made and delivered hundreds of chairs in very short time frames to support the client and contractor and this is the final inspection visit. My second call is to a meeting with one of our dealer partners to discuss some issues reported by one of their customers with some swivel chairs. The good news is the product is perfect; however the end users had forgotten how to use some of the features of the product as they had removed the user guides. A demonstration of how to sit and how to adjust the chairs resolves all issues with the chair and, even better news for the dealer and myself, the client says he may require seating for another two floors. I leave this meeting on a high and make my way to my third meeting of the day to
Dream cars at the Classic Car Show at ExCeL discuss an operations office within an airport. Working with and supporting our local dealer, we work with the client and narrow down the options to two chairs. We have such a large range of 24 hour and specialist seating within our seating collection that meeting the needs and requirements of the client for challenging areas is a simple task. Intermittent stops at coffee houses (and thankfully free wi-fi) allow me to catch up on my emails and quick calls back to the office allow me to get back on track before I hit the road! Tuesday Tuesdays are an office day for me, which means another early start, leaving my house in Kent at 5am to be in the car for the 121 mile drive to Bicester, hopefully early enough to avoid being square-wheeled on the M25. A quick stop in the local supermarket to buy sweet treats for the office and factory staff and some decent coffee for the board meeting and I arrive bright eyed at around 7am.
The early morning is spent sorting out queries and chatting to the team in the factory. I keep calling in favours to get chairs made quickly and in the short time that I have been with Rhubarb I have also brought a number of bespoke products in for manufacture. The team at our office and factory in Bicester are fantastic and always manage to turn everything around in less than ten days, so a small thank you is the least I can do. The board meeting starts at 11am and it is ‘full on’ until we all leave at 5.30 and I can make the long journey back home. Wednesday I am visiting London today to meet with a very good client of ours. I drive to the O2 and catch the tube. I am early so have enough time to stop off and visit an old architect friend who gave me my first order back in 1990. He has purchased from me ever since so I show him some of our new task seating ranges. He is enthusiastic and excited to learn about the new Nature range. Next time I am visiting we can
08 : in.HIS LIFE
The ‘Kolbak’ modular seating, seen used at the Macmillan Towers in Bradford see if he has managed to get it into a nice project. I then jump back on the tube and make my way to Baker Street for a meeting and client brief for an office fit-out. Working to the brief requirements, I measure the office and discuss options with the client, and promise a proposal for early next week. Back on the tube and over to Clerkenwell, I visit some of our best customers and also chat through the desking requirements from my last visit. Another long day, but with positive feedback – and fortunately an easy trip on the A2
means that I am home by 7pm. Thursday Much of this day is spent at home catching up on lots of paperwork and tender replies. It is also a good opportunity to chat to the whole team by phone, which is not always so easy to do when I am out and about. Friday Friday is spent on the road visiting current, new and prospective clients. As a small business I think it is vital to know what our customers think, what they require from us and how we can best support them moving forward.
I am constantly on the road and do a lot of miles but have some great conversations – to me there can never be any substitute for that face to face dialogue. The feedback on the new ranges is all very positive, as is the feedback on our service. It is great to show people some of the new equipment we have put in the factory: the video of the new Laser cutter is always a great one to show and it reminds our customers that we do actually make the furniture too. Saturday I am dad to an energetic seven year old, Poppy, who is always excited to spend time with me during evenings and

Poppy’s thoughts and views on the world have that wonderful freshness that can only come from a child and her comments about new designs for seating are little short of genius on occasion! My partner Helen is very supportive and as a family we have a packed social life, with this weekend being no exception. Saturday is treat day! I am taken by train to London to go to the Gin Festival in Tobacco Dock. There are over 500 different Gins to try (no, I didn’t try them all) and my favourite is a very strong botanical Gin with Chilli as a garnish and a Mediterranean tonic. Then out for a great meal in St Katherine’s Dock before going back to a hotel by Tower

Home With The Range Easy-clean range cookers are becoming highly popular, and on-trend styles tend to be more modern as stainless steel and black glass versions look particularly chic. Danny Lay, Managing Director of Caple, explains
I
t’s these sleek aesthetics, which blend well with the traditional elements we all love about range cookers, such as double cavity cooking space and plenty of hob space.
The latest range cooker functions include Turbo Defrost, which uses fan power at room temperature to cut defrosting time in half. Top plus Fan Heat to finish off a cooked dish or melt a cheese topping without the worry of cooking and Base Heat to re-heat cooked food or keep meals warm. Telescopic shelves, which allow the user to check their food without removing the entire dish from the oven, make life easier and a rotisserie function will create prefect, even roasting. The most popular range cookers tend to have high energy ratings and time-saving features, which will make life easier in the kitchen. Range cookers with multi-functional ovens are high on the agenda as these appliances are in demand where cooking is key to the end user’s lifestyle.
Caple’s new dual cavity dual fuel CR9209 range cooker
There is a definite trend where the consumer is looking for a large surface on which to cook with ovens that come with a whole host of functions to help them easily create mouth-watering meals. Range cookers are particularly suitable for those who enjoy food and entertaining and are looking for a versatile model, which will allow them to cook with ease. Dual fuel models – electric ovens with gas hobs – are popular as are second ovens, which come with rotisseries.

Wood You Know? Wood is possibly my favourite flooring, but sometimes it’s not the most suitable material. We take a look at some fabulous wood-effect flooring in vinyl, LVT, porcelain stoneware – options for every design scheme! Karndean’s Tawny Oak
K
arndean Designflooring (www. karndean.com) has recently expanded its popular Van Gogh Wood collection. Inspired by reclaimed natural wood materials, the twelve distinct new plank designs replicate the unique look that comes from the transformation of wood over time, in addition to processes such as burning, liming and smoking. The four groups – French Oaks, American Redwood, Scottish Beech and Mexican Cypress – ensure a grain and colour palette
to suit a wide variety of commercial projects. The four lightly lime-washed French Oak looks, Tawny Oak, Burgundy Oak, Hessian Oak and Honey Oak are reminiscent of salvaged antique flooring. The rich grain details and large scaled planks (48”x 7”) complement both traditional and contemporary architecture, and the larger size means reduced downtime and installation costs. The collection also includes three unique designs inspired by American Redwood
railway sleepers – Reclaimed Redwood, Aged Redwood and Salvaged Redwood. Running with the theme of reclaimed woods, Karndean’s product designers were drawn to the unique detail and texture of the Redwood ties, which over the years had aged beautifully. Introducing wire brushing and etching techniques, they have taken the natural aging process one step further with these three designs, giving the American Redwood designs the look of repurposed timber without the practical drawbacks of real

Incorporating fuming and smoking techniques that have been used by real wood flooring manufacturers for years, the rich brown tones of their Burnished Beech and Smoked Beech planks can accompany nearly any décor scheme, whilst the striking variation of Charred Oak makes a real statement. The new collection is rounded off by the stunning lime-washed Cypress and Burnished Cypress. Combining the limed finish of Honey Oak and the burnt effect of Charred Oak, these two designs are some of the most detailed in the entire collection. The result of liming and smoking techniques is a more refined and sophisticated aesthetic, perfect for any commercial space benefiting from a highly realistic, rustic feel. Striving to push the boundaries of design by modernising classic wood effects with innovative finishes, Amtico (www.amtico. com) has created the Signature collection of premium luxury vinyl tiles and planks.

Best≠ selling, high performance products span from Mapeií s range of Ultrabond adhesives, to the Ultracoat range of nishes. Several new innovations have also joined the range, including Mapesilent Slatted for improved acoustic performance and Mapeií s Ultracoat Oil for a durable surface nish. New Ultracoat Easy Plus is a one≠ component (100% aliphatic) water≠ based acrylicñp olyurethane varnish, best suited for wooden oors, which possesses excellent resistance to wear and abrasion. This varnish enhances the installation of wood ooring as part of a full Mapei system, consisting of Ultrabond Eco S995 1K and Ultracoat Aqua Plus. All types and sizes of wood ooring can be fully bonded with Mapeií s elastic adhesive, Ultrabond Eco S955 1K. This adhesive has a high resin content, which gives the product extra strength to allow the wood to expand and contract without shearing the adhesive bond. Mapeií s Ultrabond Eco S955 1K provides safety, performance and environmental bene ts as the sililated polymer≠ based adhesive emits very low levels of VOC and does not contain solvents, amines, isocyanates or epoxy resin. Its formulation ensures that installers working in close proximity arení t subjected to any

una Interior Design was commissioned by development company London Square to design the marketing suite at The Star & Garter, their majestic development on the top of Richmond Hill. Their brief was to set the tone for the visitor experience at this unique listed building, and interior designer Agnese De Masi undertook this sales suite design. “In any marketing or sales suite, specifically in a high-end one, the customer journey is very important,” explained Agnese. “The
concierge sets the tone with the exclusivity of the development, inviting you into the building that may become your potential new home. So there has to be both an element of comfort, and also of luxury. “The flow of a great sales suite is important, helping to build anticipation and excitement about the development along the journey.” Guests arrive at the entrance hall where the concierge area sets the tone, portraying the exclusivity of the development and inviting you inside. A selection of original newspaper
prints, from the time of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation are displayed on the wall. These were found in the building and are a testament to its history. From here guests walk along a passage with a time-line graphic showing the history of the Order of the Garter from its conception by Edward III in 1348 up until the present day, when London Square gave a new lease of life to the building. The bespoke floor design, created by Agnese, enhances the long entrance corridor and is a key theme used in the entire suite.

Swop It For STORMBOARD® STORMBOARD® is the superior, sustainable, waterproof alternative to plywood, chipboard and MDF. Perfect for hoardings, shelving, display units, partitioning and more, STORMBOARD® is made from mixed upcycled plastics and can be used for interior and exterior applications. STORMBOARD® can be manufactured in any colour, so there’s no need to paint the panels or apply surface finishes or cladding. This can have a massive impact on overall project cost, with the potential for huge reductions in labour and materials costs. STORMBOARD® is the responsible solution. By replacing plywood and MDF, it’s saving trees and reducing pressure on landfill. Also, with no additives like formaldehyde as used in some imported MDF panels, it’s safer for fabricators. What’s not to love! STORMBOARD® is available in 2440mm x 1220mm sheet sixes with 19mm thickness. www.amariplastics.com

30 : in.BRIEF An impactful reception featuring a studded leather front desk and an engraved logo on the wall behind it provides a second point of greeting for the visitors who are then taken further on their journey. They are led to an architectural model of the development before being invited to see the potential of the apartments in the show home. Back in the marketing suite an impressive marble and brass champagne bar provides refreshments to the guests. The feature backdrop to the bar consists of layered brass panels. The base element of these brass plates is reflective while the elevated front panel is matt, creating depth and a variation in texture. The elegant marble bar set in front of the brass panelling adds opulence to the whole room.

Bespoke brass panelling forms a backdrop to the bar As you get further along the journey the customer experience is more intimate and sales advisors will then take their guests to an exclusive seating area to discuss their requirements, whilst admiring the picturesque view over the Thames and the much celebrated Richmond Parklands, which are amongst the strong selling points for this development. This area includes a secluded room to provide privacy where the customers can select the finishes for their new home from three opulent palettes. “It was very important to us that the customer feeling created through the design struck the perfect balance between a private members club and their own home,” Agnese said. “Guests must feel like they are being looked after as they would be in their club, while still feeling the comfort
that they would at home. For us it was vital that the customer must feel special. Every detail, accessory and light fitting has been bespoke designed and chosen to portray a contemporary interior that enhances the period of the building. As a project, this was a complex but fascinating one that involved both specification and interior elements to the design. “We are thrilled with the outcome – the elegant design speaks for itself,” added Agnese. www.sunainteriordesign.com

Registered Title Launched The BIID has announced a new protected title for professional interior designers, BIID Registered Interior Designer®
T
his new title is a way for clients, designers and other built environment professionals to identify interior designers who have met the BIID’s rigorous professional standard. The BIID will hold a Register of these professionals which clients will be able to use as an essential resource. Once a designer has become a BIID Registered Interior Designer® they must adhere to the BIID’s Code of Conduct and annual CPD requirement to remain on the Register. In addition to being able to describe themselves as a BIID Registered Interior Designer® individuals will also be able to use the post nominals RegID after their name. The ‘Registered’ professional title is already well recognised in the built environment, with fellow Construction Industry Council
(CIC) member the Association of Project Management (APM) launching their APM Registered Project Professional standard in 2011. The BIID is hoping that the launch of this new title will bring much needed clarity to the current field – whilst in the UK the term ‘architect’ is a legally protected title, governed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB), there is no similar government regulation for interior design. BIID President Daniel Hopwood launched the new Registered Interior Designer® title to BIID members on Thursday 17th March at design brand Ochre’s stunning Clerkenwell showroom.
a much needed professional benchmark for our industry,” said Daniel. “This current widespread title confusion between Interior Designer, Interior Architect and Interior Decorator is not helpful for designers, students or clients. “Interior Designer is the best descriptor for the complex mix of knowledge, skills and experience required to design interior space, which of course includes extensive knowledge of interior architecture and interior decoration.” To find out more about the new Registered Interior Designer® title visit www.biid.org.uk/about/registered
