Welcome to the April issue of in.Design!
It’s so good to be back in ‘hard copy’ after our short on-line-only hiatus; there’s nothing to compare to a newly-printed publication!
And we have a packed issue for you to enjoy! In in.His Life on p06 Mathew Freeman, Creative Director at 33 Interiors, allows us to peek into his diary and read about how his love of yoga helps maintain a great work/life balance.
Keeping an eye on the latest trends, we have two in.Vogue features in this issue - Contract Flooring (p14) takes a look at commercial carpets and sees what the Flooring Show has in store, and Bathrooms (p20) features some glorious sanitary ware to please both traditionalists and fans of the most contemporary fittings!
in.Brief shows how, when challenged with a relocation which also involved the incorporation of three offices in to one, Woods Hardwick proved more than up to the task. Read about their stylish fit-out of IGT’s new premises, on p24.
And finally, on p34 the BIID reveal more details of their 2017 event, Inside Knowledge: The BIID Business Success Conference.

A Week In The Life Of Mathew Freeman Mathew Freeman is a member of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) and sits on its professional practice Committee. He is Creative Director at 33 Interiors (www.33interiors.com), which specialises in residential, hospitality and commercial interior design. Over his last 14 years in London, BIID Registered Interior Designer® Mathew has been busy working on a vast array of projects, leading to his current position as Creative Director. 33 Interiors delivers a unique vision for every brief, and Mathew ensures that each project has a strong concept, a narrative that provides creative direction, clear rationale and a common thread that pulls everything together. Focusing on the concept so intently feeds his passion for attention to detail. This, in turn, builds richness and depth into his schemes, providing his clients with highly individual interiors. Monday Almost every day starts with my commute into central London. This typically takes an hour, and as I live at the start of the line, I have a choice of seats and the opportunity to keep up to date on my reading. I browse through Elle Decoration and Sleeper, as well as the Homes section of the Evening Standard. I also make sure I have a few episodes of my favourite shows at hand in case I don’t get a seat on the way home. Watching Drag Race, Walking Dead, and Grace and Frankie makes the journey time fly by. I’ve also become addicted to Peak, a nifty brain training app. It promises to improve memory, alertness, problem

Once at the office I sit down with the team and we discuss the week ahead, update each other on projects, resourcing and client meetings. My evening is a quiet one, sharing homemade lasagna with my partner who also has a totally absorbing job as a theatre producer.
In the afternoon I have a meeting at one of our central London hospitality projects to run through shop drawings on the restaurant area. We discuss details of the planning implications of signage and services routes to the bar from the basement.
Tuesday Today is looking like a busy day. It begins with a team run-through of one of our commercial office projects. The team has been working on the project for over 18 months. The completion date is in September, and I am satisfied that we are

10 : in.HIS LIFE Wednesday We recently won a project in the Middle East, and work on this is due to start next week with a series of client meetings in the region. I’ve already done a lot of preparatory research. I’m really looking forward to checking out the built environment there, as well as doing some general exploring of the region. In the evening I have drinks with two of my friends from my interior architecture degree course. We meet in Soho on Old Compton Street, and settle down to catching up on each other’s news. Thursday Thursday is spent analysing our company website and choosing the updates we want to showcase. The stunning photographs of our Paddington development will be the lead project this week. Specially commissioned professional photography is essential to sell our completed projects to future clients. We always make sure we have both general and detailed shots so we can visually demonstrate the intricacy of our designs as we talk through the brief. Currently, our most far-flung brief is a hospitality project in Penang, Thailand. We have already developed our proposals and are awaiting client feedback. We’ve produced a series of beautiful spaces for the project, and we believe the client will be very happy with them. Thursday evening includes one of my favourite activities. I’m looking around show apartments, including a £17m penthouse in Chelsea. The Berkeley Homes development there is just spectacular! In the penthouse lobby we are welcomed by a sweeping staircase leading up to the master bedroom
The luxurious Grosvenor Hotel in Chester and terrace, which is minimal and beautifully detailed. The rest of the four bedroom penthouse has stunning views and is everything you would expect for the price tag. I vow to keep buying lottery tickets, thinking “Maybe one day…!” Friday Today looks like it’s going to be a day of deep thought. Our business has recently celebrated its third birthday and we are due to refresh our business plan. So I spend the day intensively note-taking, sketching, thinking, analysing and researching. I cover short term and long term goals, business development, existing and new clients, fees and turnover. By the time I finally leave for my yoga class there is nothing I need more. Friday evening is quiet, dinner at home watching the sun set over the city. My partner and I discuss our plans for 2018 and our Easter trip to Miami.

Glamour meets comfort at Paddington Exchange Saturday I start my day with a long tube ride to the other side of London to see a friend who lives near Kew Gardens. We discuss the impending birth of her second child and what we can do to her house to accommodate a children’s play area. A few sketches later and I think the basics are there. From Kew I head to Chelsea to celebrate another friend’s 40th birthday at Phene, so plenty of delicious food, good wine and chocolate birthday cake!
Sunday Hockney day! Finally I have managed to get round to seeing the Hockney show at the Tate Britain with my favourite art lover and publishing friend Yvonne. We have been going to shows together for around five years and always make the most of the members’ area and the cake! We arrange our next catch up at the Groucho Club in a few weeks’ time to celebrate her birthday.

It is supported and sponsored by the Contract Flooring Association, who will also be running a Demonstration Zone with a specific focus on contract flooring. The Trends Hub is once again curated by Scarlet Opus, and a specific seminar area will host CPD certified seminars, giving visitors from the contract sector a chance to add to their professional development. Brintons (www.brintons.net) exhibited its latest High Definition collections at the BCFA Open, Spring Design event which took place in March at the Old Truman Brewery in London, where they showcased two bold graphic designs woven in its 32-colour High Definition Weave, a unique Brintons’ innovation created for the contract market that allows for infinite design possibilities and highly dynamic visuals. An art-inspired design from the Altered Gravity collection created by Stacy Garcia (shown) was presented as a wall-hanging extending to the floor alongside a pixelenthused design from the Zuzunaga collection by artist-designer Christian Zuzunaga. These two designs showcase the creative possibilities and extended colour combinations allowed by Brintons’ HD Weave technology. The colour choices include red, orange, green, blue, purple, grey, black and plum, plus three recent additions; cream, beige and brown. There are proven benefits to incorporating nature-inspired – or biophilic – design techniques in interior spaces. For example, Interface’s Human Spaces report (2015) found that including natural elements can significantly boost levels of well-being and productivity. In the educational environment specifically, research from Wells & Evans (2003) shows that increased contact with nature can dramatically boost young people’s attention capacity, meaning they are more focused in the classroom and better able to concentrate. For example, simply optimising exposure to daylight alone can increase the speed of learning by 20-26%.
Heckmondwike FB’s Constellation range (shown in Brown)
Interface’s Human Nature collection, which is inspired by the tactile textures found in the most elemental of floor coverings – forest floors, grassy fields and pebbled garden paths, was the perfect biophilic flooring for the project. Human Nature 840 skinny plank in Limestone – which mimics a pebbled design – was chosen to create a focal square design in the reception area at the entrance of the building. For the main corridors in the building, Interface’s Off Line collection was selected to create an eye-catching, stimulating design. It was used in a Pepper/Lime colourway, which incorporates two different colours of yarn – a pepper grey shade and brighter lime colour. To complement this, the Infuse collection in Clay Lime, Unity in Graphite and Online collections in separate Pepper and Lime shades were also used in various classrooms and communal spaces.

On the other side, Carmen pays tribute to the past with the redesign of an iconic model from Roca’s centenary history. The classical Carmen washbasin is coming back with a vintage style to become a new complete bathroom collection with the most advanced features such as rimless toilets.
Along with new washbasins the additions to the collection also include rimless WCs, a bidet, a circular, free-standing bathtub, and a complete faucet series.
The new Comtesse suite from Thomas Crapper & Co (www.thomas-crapper.com) features sophisticated, curved lines with a nod to vintage glamour. Inspired by original designs from the 1920s, Comtesse has been re-mastered combining classic design with the best modern materials and techniques whilst maintaining the qualities unique to Thomas Crapper. Crafted by experts from the highest quality ceramic, the WC pan is available with a lowlevel cistern creating the illusion of space when fitted with elegant wall brackets. The anti-splash roll around basin is made using one piece of ceramic, whilst creating the effect of an under-mounted basin, synonymous with 1920s design. When Three Become One! When the leases for International Game Technology PLC’s (IGT) three London offices were about to expire in 2016, the company acquired a 17,300 sq ft office at 10 Finsbury Square to create one big central office. Woods Hardwick, one of the UK’s leading multi-disciplinary architectural practices, was appointed to maximise the space through creative and efficient design while delivering sound value for money. With the first office having to be relocated by 1st May 2016, and the remaining two planned to move on a phased basis in June 2016, time was of the essence…
in.BRIEF : 25
T
he project, predominantly a fit-out scheme, required some sensible creative input; up until April the three offices were part of two separate companies - GTECH, the largest global lottery business, and IGT, the world leader in the gaming equipment space. After merging to create the world’s leading end-to-end gaming company and adopting the IGT name with GTECH’s visual identity, the new office needed to inspire employees and integrate historically different companies and departments. Visually marrying two brands, as well as combining three offices into one, required some specific design considerations. The environment had to be suitable for HR as well as the more creative gaming/ programming division of the company. According to the white paper ‘How to Create a Successful Organisational Culture: Build It – Literally’ by Haworth’s Global Workplace Research department, creating workplace culture is the most important factor to take into account when designing office spaces. Generally, companies have an overarching culture that is often tied to their brand, but there are also strong and varied subcultures that tend to run along business unit lines, (such as the aforementioned HR and gaming departments). Unsurprisingly, different units may express very different cultures. “Understanding the cultural context of an organisation can help the designer offer the right mix of individual, meeting and social spaces and even the atmosphere of those spaces that encourage the desired behaviours,” explained Haworth’s senior research strategist Dr Michael O’Neill. As a new build with all the 17,300 sq
26 : in.BRIEF
ft of space on one floor, the new office building at 10 Finsbury Square did not offer the natural internal character of an older building. Therefore, Woods Hardwick, acting as design team leader, decided to flair into the vast space by using a playful colour palette. The colours were toned down for specific working zones to cater to the diverse needs of the employees, and at the same time, they were used to create unified company spirit. To meet IGT’s multi-use space requirements consisting of 134 open plan desks, 15
offices, eight meeting rooms and a number of informal meeting spaces as well as support spaces, the architects decided on a holistic colour-led design approach. Engaging office design plays a significant part when merging companies. Informal meeting spaces encourage staff interaction, which in return increases staff morale and, in the best case, leads to the generation of ideas through casual, verbal idea exchange. Creative interiors also allow companies to make a statement. However, the functionality of an interior concept
should never be compromised in favour of gimmicky features. Letting their imagination fly, but not being quirky for the sake of it, Woods Hardwick created spirited and playful communal spaces, using bold contemporary furniture and flashes of colour. The design and vision for the breakout and link spaces tie this playful palette together to ensure that the identity of each space is clearly representative of IGT’s creative aspirations. Open plan offices encourage

n.Design caught up with north Star Club owner Carolyn Van outersterp, to find out how she creates beautifully natural spaces that take your breath away.
Set in sun-dappled woodland close to York, there’s a fairytale feel to the suites, and Carolyn’s used a flair for interior design to capture rustic chic with a hint of elegance in every single one. Four poster beds await the weary, roll top baths add a touch of luxury, and log burning stoves promise warm, cosy evenings with the sounds of the trees swaying in the wind outside. We asked Carolyn what she thinks holiday let guests are looking for from their escapes, and she explained that glamping is all about reconnecting with nature and making memories. “people want something different to what they have at home,” she told us. “i like to give them a sense of theatre. i think luxury is time with nature, and experiences like sleeping under the stars.”
part of north Star Club’s charm is that it feels like a true escape from the daily grind, and with nature right at the end of your decking, a stay feels like an adventure. the setting captures the romance of the outdoors, and thanks to Carolyn’s attention to detail, the woodland suites make unique spaces to return to after a busy day exploring. Soft lighting, fur throws and beautiful artwork are just some of the features that make the woodland suites feel a world away from home. “i like my décor to be quirky, reflecting a theatrical element that’s larger than life,” added Carolyn. “i try and make each space personal and unique so that it’s heartfelt.” And we must say, she’s certainly succeeded!
