Welcome to the December issue of

S

exy sells. Back in the 70s a fragrance called Jovan Musk Oil, was promoted with sexual connotations and sales grew from £1 million to a whopping £50 million. Fast forward to now and think about the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomena; it set the record as the fastest selling paperback of all time, has sold over 100 million copies and been translated into 52 languages, oooh la la. So when we look at it, it does make sense to sneak a little sexiness into our spa industry too. Turn to page 57 where we have a peepshow of the latest launch from OPI – their Fifty Shades of Grey, The Collection, along with other naughty and nice tempting treats. On page 67, we act as cupid and offer suggestions on how to romance clients with some sweet endings and ideas to introduce into your existing menus – from tempting chocolates to Pukka ‘Love’ Tea – you will literally fall head over heels with this stuff! On page 21, we look into the future and talk to six brands on their newest

advances, latest technologies and what their action plans are for 2015. While page 30 celebrates the Chinese New Year, (happening on Feb 19th 2015), and the brands that are influenced by the use of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It can easily be adapted into our modern world and more importantly into your spas now. We at Modern Spa HQ are celebrating too – we’ve reached a milestone – 12 glossy issues so... Happy 1st Birthday to us! We received lots of anniversary greetings – and a few are showcased on page 13. So I, along with the Modern Spa staffers would like to take this opportunity to thank all the brands, industry insiders and the influencer’s who have tirelessly contributed to the pages – making it a truly inspirational, thought provoking and fun read. Cue… round of applause to you all. Lastly I would like to wish season’s greetings to all and looking forward to pampering prosperity for 2015 and beyond!

Salon Evolution by Steven Gunnip, Director NEW TECHNOLOGY UV Skin Scanners are fantastic tools for beauty salons to help assist their clients in achieving and maintaining younger, healthier looking skin. The scanner uses a special ultraviolet filter to reveal all of the underlying damage in a painless procedure that then shows the client, via a photographic image, how their skin looks and the damage that has been caused. Beauty therapists can then tailor a client’s treatment around it, building customised solutions from their specific retail ranges that are tailored to their concerns, making it a great selling and retailing tool. ‘Low Profile’ selling techniques concentrate on words painting a mental picture the client can relate to in order to generate sales. These scanners deliver this mental imagery without spending hours training the therapists to do so. The scanners are a tool we encourage all of our beauty clients to use; it’s about educating the client and finding out what their individual problems/needs are and translating professionalism and knowledge to solve these issues. RELIABLE BOOKING SYSTEMS At Salon Evolution we work with a whole host of different salons. One technological breakthrough that I think works brilliantly for salons and spas looking to migrate from a paper booking service without incurring the financial investment of a booking software system, is the free online salon and spa scheduling software programme, SalonLite. This is an online, cloud based appointment scheduling system that is simple to use and set up and allows users in both the hair and beauty industries to monitor all aspects of the system, while allowing reminder mobile text messages or emails to be sent to clients, limiting no-shows and helping build a loyal client base. This is great for salons

that don’t have a huge amount of money to invest, but that are looking to take their businesses to the next level and we recommend this to lots of our clients to help them evolve and analyse their business effectively. INTERIOR ACCESSORIES A big trend that has been growing through out 2014 and I believe will boom in 2015 is the Pedicure Spa Chair market. The products are more affordable then ever now for high quality pedicure chair items with built in back & neck massage, seat vibrations and whirlpool jets and LED lights in the basin. In the past these chairs would of cost over £3000 plus but now chairs start from as low as £1000. The pedicure chairs bring a unique feature to a spa or salon by allowing the chair to give your client a massage while they have their feet soaked. This allows your therapists to be elsewhere working, while the chair is effectively delivering the preparation work for the pedicure. Some chairs have MP3 and Ipod docks and various styles of base and massage functions, the ranges are growing and new styles are being launched like the PJS-Lifepod and PJS-CALM. NEW SPA TERRITORIES To celebrate the Chinese New Year we take a look at the treatments using ancient traditions of TCM that fit perfectly into our modern world and spa business strategies…

PHYTO5 SKINCARE by Founder, Carmela Rosbottom PHYTO5 skincare is based on the premise that your skin, a reflexive organ, reflects the internal condition of your body and follows the five element theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) – which teaches that the body is not, as generally taught in the West, made only of matter (solids and fluids) but is also made of vital energy (50 per cent matter/50 per cent energy). Vital energy is essential to all life forms and in China is called chi. Each season has its’ own energy that corresponds to specific elements with their own characteristics. There are five seasons/elements – Spring (Wood), Summer (Fire), Autumn (Metal) and Winter (Water) and a 5th Earth ‘season’ that is a transitional period between

each of the other 4 (because transition in nature is always progressive and never sudden). Wood is the element linked with spring and the colour green. The spring season runs from February 5th to April 17th. The Wood element is also connected to the liver and gallbladder (which have a critical role in digestion). The PHYTO5 Wood products are created for the aesthetic conditions related to a lack of or, more frequently, an excess of oil in the skin (so the connection with the liver and gallbladder is clear) – oily skin, blackheads, hyperpigmentation (sometimes called liver spots), oily scalp and hair. Energy circulation is also promoted for the whole body.

Devise a menu to support detoxing, eating ‘green’ foods (fresh, leafy greens and sprouts, nettle soup) to a traditional Chinese New Year banquet (Chinese dumplings, fish, spring rolls, and Niángao (glutinous rice cakes)). Foods that support the liver include dandelion leaves, sorrel, nettles, yellow dock, red beet and watercress, bamboo shoots, garlic, ginger and lemon – lots of scope for a talented chef. 2. Activities out of doors help get the

Chi flowing including stretching, yoga, Tai Chi and Qi Gong. 3. This is a good time to use acupuncture, reflexology, and chakra balancing to promote energy treatments. 4. Offer seasonal face and body treatments, exfoliation, massage, detoxifying and wraps. 5. Introduce traditional Chinese decorations such as red, dragons with a touch of green for a nod to the spring season.

INTRODUCING TCM INTO YOUR SPA by Carolyn Shafer, Acupuncturist The main principle of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) is balance. So harmony in all aspects of life, physical, emotional and spiritual is very important. If any of one if these elements becomes out of sorts, then it affects the entire wellbeing. So it is therefore crucial to incorporate TCM into our lives. I offer Acupuncture facials that not only affect the superficial problem areas, but also at the same time address any underlying health issues, which often are reflected in our faces. For example, those creases between the eyebrows are due to an imbalance of liver energy, caused by frustration, or pent up emotions, so if we treat the energy of the liver, not only will the patient feel happier and less wound up, but the lines between the eyes will lessen. Another example is sagging jowls, which are caused by a deficiency in the spleen energy, which also causes tiredness and the reliance on sweet foods. Energising the spleen will lift the sagging and increase the patients zest for life. So in a typical facial I will take a short case history to discover what the client would most like to change and improve in their appearance, then take the pulses on both wrists, to help me diagnose any underlying problems. I will then choose points on the lower legs and arms to needle, which will influence the internal organs, and finally gently insert very fine needles into the face itself at specific points, to lift, brighten and energise the

entire skin. These needles are left in for about 15 minutes, during which a deep relaxation is felt, and then they are gently removed. This is followed by a massage using a jade roller along the meridian lines of the face to improve circulation and lymph drainage. Introducing TCM would be a fantastic addition to the spa sector. There is now much more emphasis generally towards the holistic in society. Acupuncture would work particularly well in residential type spas, where perhaps two or three treatments consecutively might be possible, but would also work as a one off session. The deep relaxation felt after an acupuncture treatment would be very beneficial in a spa setting, making the client more receptive to other therapies on offer, and making their whole spa experience more therapeutic and memorable. www.carolyncrafer.co.uk

ANCIENT BAMBOO THERAPY at Serenity Spa, Seaham Hall For centuries, Asian masseurs have recognised the benefits of their native bamboo plants in softening and strengthening the skin. elen Harker, design manager at Simon Jersey, began her career studying fashion and fabric design at university, which included a placement year at Simon Jersey. After finishing her degree she was offered a permanent position with the company, where she has worked with the design team for the past 25 years. Helen is responsible for a team of three designers and oversees the creation of bespoke uniforms for Simon Jersey’s customers. This includes the design of suits and parade wear for Team GB which will be worn at the Olympics in Rio 2016. She is also responsible for the design of more than 650 garments which feature in the Simon Jersey catalogue and on the website. To ensure the catalogue stays up to date and reflects current style and colour trends, Helen travels throughout the UK and Europe, visiting trade shows and talking to customers to source inspiration for new garments. Under Helen’s direction Simon Jersey has become known for its high quality uniforms that combine style with comfort and functionality.

What’s your morning routine? I get up at 7am when I’m in the office, although it can be earlier if I’m visiting customers. I always plan what I’m going to wear the night before, and my uniform for work is a wardrobe bursting with Simon Jersey garments. I’ve always felt that it’s really important to wear Simon Jersey and I’m proud to do so. It means that I’m confident in talking to customers about our range as I’ve tried and tested our clothes and made sure they stay looking stylish for a full working day, while also being comfortable and functional. How do you start the day? I have breakfast at home, before taking my youngest daughter to sixth form and heading to work and catching up on emails over a cup of tea. I then put together my list of things to do for the day. I’m quite famous for my lists. Down to business… My first meetings of the day are with the rest of the design team to discuss the uniform specification for new clients. We talk about the various garments and sizes that are needed, as well as the fabrics and colours we’ll use to create a uniform that has maximum impact. Mornings are also spent planning

design boards, for example to create a new look for a client based on garments that are available in our catalogue. Much of my afternoon is spent planning the design work for our next catalogues. My favourite meetings are those where we unveil the finished uniforms to clients. I’ve been designing at Simon Jersey for more than 25 years, but I still look forward to this! The presentation is the client’s first chance to see and feel the designs we’ve created, so it’s important that they look their best. We steam all garments and dress a selection of mannequins before the presentation, as well as presenting design boards. Lunch I go for lunch at 12.30pm with the rest of the design team. It’s good to have a bit of down time and a catch up on nonwork matters every day, and it keeps us working well together. What do you do to unwind? After finishing work, I head to the gym to unwind. However, work is never far from my mind as the team at my gym wear uniforms that we’ve designed, which is great as I love seeing how they look in action!

My inspiration for new garments comes from all kinds of places including trade shows, client feedback, the catwalk and the high street.
