Even with the excitement of the festive season upon us, day-to-day jobs like laundry still need to be done, and we look at some systems that’ll keep your towels and linen deliciously clean. And we don’t forget the men either – the rise in popularity of beards and moustaches mean that many spas are adding special facial treatments to care for this trend, as well as the skin and bodycare offerings that make a spa visit

he SPAshell Spa has been in planning and development for the last five years, and the first SPAshell to be commissioned in the UK has just been opened in the grounds of Fishmore Hall Hotel in Ludlow, Shropshire. It is entirely different from any other spa that has been built – and the reason is that is has been constructed in a factory off site and delivered in sections. The building is made from giant pods that are clad in Siberian larch wood. Once fitted on site and connected you would never know that SPAshell hadn’t been constructed in situ! What is extraordinary about this concept is not only how the building is
constructed but also that it is delivered with all of the internal fixtures and fittings for a fully operational 5* spa. SPAshell provides a hotel operator with a unique spa experience, it is completely turnkey – all you need to add are customers! The SPAshell team manage the entire process of delivery, setup and launch, this means there is a minimum impact to the business, and finance options with lease purchase are available. The SPAshell has a reception desk with juice bar and spa lounge with large windows onto the garden. Four generously sized treatment rooms equipped with exceptional quality electric massage beds from the USA,

therapist chairs, client chairs, trolleys, laundry baskets, unique wall art, lamps, bed throws and even bolster cushions. Two of the four treatment rooms are fitted with walk-in showers. The treatment rooms can be opened up to make dual treatment rooms for VIP treatments if required. SPAshell has a unisex changing area with built-in wooden lockers, seating and hairdryers. There is an Italian designed two-person sauna and steam room and large relaxation space with four loungers. Do you have a restaurant or cafe, and what’s on the menu? SPAshell has a F&B facility although the aim is to drive traffic into the hotel.

Within the SPAshell we have selected Nespresso which has been introduced into the hotel bedrooms. Fishmore Hall chef Andrew Birch (Great British Menu) will prepare some spa food offerings. Do you have a signature treatment? Fishmore Hall has made the Laval Shell Thermal Relax their signature treatment. This unique treatment uses the Elemis Frangipani Monoi Body Oil which is massaged into the skin with the warm Lava shells, helping to melt away tension and at the same time treating the skin to some super hydration. This treatment will leave you feeling rejuvenated and revitalised with skin that is supple and soft.
What are your favourite brands? Fishmore Hall have selected Elemis as their house brand and treatments will be provided using the Skin Energising Biotech system which is a performance and results driven regime that reenergises the completion and enhances visible skin health. There are also holistic, hands-on treatments from Elemis and a luxury body massage ritual incorporating soothing Lava Shells. SPAshell also offer luxury manicures and pedicures from the Jessica nail brand and Mii make-up consultations will be available to support Fishmore Hall Hotel’s Wedding and Special Occasions market.
Tell me about your staff The launch team spent a month in training before the SPAshell opened. This built on their considerable knowledge of holistic treatments. They were all chosen for their positive and sunny personalities that will quickly help to give the spa its personality. Describe your staff motivation and training programmes All staff completed a month’s training on all aspects of the treatment offer. In addition, there is training on guest journey and delivering the highest level of customer service. Our approach is the team are an important ingredient

to the spa and we have a strong philosophy of ‘happy staff means happy customers.’ We are also running a number of incentive programmes. What’s your mantra? ‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a small step’ – it’s the small steps that make all the difference and we want our customers to see the special small steps that we are taking to help them on their journey. What special ‘spa breaks’ are you currently offering?

he Spa at Galgorm is located within Galgorm Resort, and nestled on the banks of the River Maine in Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland. Owned by the Hill family since 1991, the original building itself dates back to 1857. Tell me about your facilities? With the first Thermal Village in Ireland, Galgorm Resort and Spa are proud to introduce spa facilities that are unique to the UK and Ireland in terms of sheer size (75,000 square feet) and diversity, incorporating hot and cold experiences for guests. This includes nine different saunas, one of which is used to perform the Galgorm ‘Celtic Sauna Ritual,’ riverside yoga studio, a snow cabin, indoor pool and infinity hydrotherapy
pool, experience shower, water beds, outdoor jacuzzi pool and hot tub, beltane hot tub and fire, as well as a relax orangery and Elements Spa Cafe. Alongside these facilities we also offer an extensive menu of treatments to include bespoke treatments, all of which take place in one of our 13 treatment rooms of which we have seven single occupancy treatment rooms, two double treatment rooms, and two hands-off treatment rooms (Cleo bath and Mud Serail). What’s your mantra? Relax, Revive and Rediscover. What packages, or specific offers or marketing, have worked best for you? Online marketing was employed as a critical element of our campaign. The first step in this process was to schedule a series of teaser e-zines launching the
campaign and offer to our e-marketing database. We also partnered with industry influencers of whom we chose on the merits of sharing company values and interests. These included Women In Business and Ulster Tatler, Northern Ireland Hotel Federation, Visit Belfast, Tourism Ireland, Tourism Northern Ireland and Manor House Hotels who sent these e-zines to their databases. Digital tactics included utilising Facebook organic and promoted posts, Digital Display Advertising across the Google Display Network and Remarketing to those who had visited the ‘Be The First’ landing page. As a quirky take on our digital strategy we ran a Facebook competition to become “The Face of the Thermal Spa.”

Across Twitter and Instagram we utilised the power of hashtags and created the #BeTheFirst hashtag which become synonymous with the campaign and helped to engage our loyal Twitter target audience, drawing interest in the launch across both platforms. My LIFE… clare Anderson, the founder and Managing Director of Shared beauty Secrets, describes her career and her on-going ambitions. What’s your background? I qualified as a beauty therapist in 1993, and gained 5-star experience working as a therapist for champneys. Over following years I worked in management roles for clarins, Decleor and carita, back to champneys as Group Development Manager, then in 2006 I moved to Gerards as Sales Director. In 2008 I discovered Lava Shells and made the decision to combine all my experience to launch Shared beauty Secrets and bring Lava Shells to the uK and Ireland. How do you start your day? I have always enjoyed starting my day with exercise. For many years it was a dog walk across the Oxfordshire countryside, nowadays I am enjoy pushing myself in spinning classes at Soho Farmhouse Gym three days a week. For me the weekends are for relaxation and indulgence! Do you stop for lunch or graze? It will vary depending on the day, but I try and have lunch although I rarely stop or switch off from work. I will often have working lunches with members of my team and colleagues, and find we achieve a lot over a relaxed lunch.
How do you unwind? Spending time with my family. We love going to the cinema and eating out as a family and early evenings are often spent horse riding or playing dress up with my five-year-old daughter. A perfect evening with my husband is a large glass of wine and a movie. What’s the secret to your success? Seeing an opportunity where others don’t and the ability to act fast. I also know what I am good at and realise we can’t all be good at everything, so surround myself with people who complement my skills. I am incredibly driven, determined and thrive off a challenge, but most importantly I love what I do and have a huge passion for our industry. What’s the best piece of advice you were ever given? I was once told ‘go with your gut feeling and never to regret your decisions.’ the only thing that is certain in business is that we will all make mistakes so don’t worry about past decisions that didn’t go your way. Do you have a philosophy? It is important to remember to have fun. Anything is possible if you want

I am really excited to be launching my first body oil range Kokolokahi in January and for the past six months have been testing and refining our blends. I am using Kokolokahi Energise every morning which is incredibly uplifting, much needed at this time of year as well as nourishing to a dry skin. Do you take nutritional supplements? No, I have a balanced diet and don’t feel I need any supplements.
