ondon came alive last month as the industry remembered Vidal Sassoon, Salon International celebrated its fortieth birthday and some of the world’s best stylists converged on stage at the Tribute and Alternative Hair shows 2012. October is always a busy time for all salon professionals; but with so many significant milestones, careers and occasions celebrated, this year was a particularly momentous month and it will undoubtedly be remembered by many. It was indeed a month of sorrow and nostalgia as well as joy and optimism for the future. We said a heartfelt goodbye to the globe’s biggest hair legend at a special memorial service and recognised his far-spanning impact on the entire global industry. We also celebrated the talents of today and tomorrow in true hair and beauty industry style by showcasing awe-inspiring work both onstage at Salon International and during sell out shows at Alternative Hair and Tribute. I was lucky enough to be invited to Sassoon’s memorial service at St Paul’s Cathedral, which was filled with hundreds of people all wanting to pay tribute to the life of the world’s most famous hairdresser. Rather than a traditional funeral, the ceremony was a celebration of his talent and success rather than a sombre affair; although there were tears shed, particularly during Elan Sassoon’s
tribute where he described his father’s unwavering ambition and generosity (read the full story on page 10). Similarly, this year’s Alternative Hair Show managed to spread joy and hope while still delivering its poignant message of helping others in need. Celebrating its 30-year anniversary, the charity has raised nearly £9 million for leukaemia research – the disease that took the life of both founder Tony Rizzo’s son and Vidal Sassoon, who was a worldwide patron for the cause. Held in the late hairdresser’s honour, some of the industry’s greatest living legends took part in a series of presentations in homage of his work and that of other legends around the world. And led by his creativity, it was clear to all those that attended that the legacy of his innovative style of hairdressing lives on. This year’s event raised over £193,000 for the cause (turn to page seven for the inside story). So as we look to the future of hairdressing and the salon industry as a whole, it’s met with positively. No one will ever replace Vidal Sassoon. But his determination and talent along with the work of many of his peers will no doubt serve as an inspiration for hairdressers and salon professionals for many generations to come. Alternative Hair Show 2012 honours industry legends with an awe-inspiring 30-year anniversary celebration
T
he Royal Albert Hall was filled last month for the Alternative Hair Show’s hotly anticipated thirtieth anniversary presentation. Underpinned by the theme ‘legends’, thousands of international hairdressers, press and brand representatives witnessed the work of some of the greatest living stylists from all four corners of the world with an awe-inspiring collective of live hair presentations. Presented by founder Tony Rizzo and president Anthony Mascolo, the show included spectacular interpretations of the event’s theme by 20 esteemed hair teams from around the world. The likes of Sassoon, Saco, TIGI, Alan Edwards, Sanrizz, Mahogany and Trevor Sorbie were present to fly the flag for the UK, while international teams such as Gerry Santoro, Rizos and David Murray jetted in
from as far a field as Japan to show their support for the cause. Standout presentations included a rainbow of primary-coloured geometric bobs and crops by Sanrizz (pictured); sky-high vintage and voyeuristic bouffants by Slovenia’s Stevo team; and TIGI UK’s homage to Alexander McQueen. Vidal Sassoon was also remembered as part of the event as the “late and great” original hairdressing legend. Led by his son Elan, daughter Eden and wife Ronnie, the audience gave a standing ovation when they were presented with a unique award in memory of the iconic hairdresser, who was also the charity’s worldwide patron. But as the evening was a celebration of true legends, it was also a chance to recognise the stars of the future. The event’s live shows were followed by the announcement of the prestigious
International Visionary Award, which went to Dublin’s Michelle McDermott from the Peter Mark hairdressing salon. Beating off stiff competition from creative teams from around the entire globe, the young stylist wowed judges with a statement scarlet crop featuring a precision cut fringe. The winner will now be invited to take part in next year’s Alternative Hair Show with a presentation of her own. The Alternative Hair Show was founded in 1983 after Sanrizz’s Tony Rizzo and his wife lost their son to leukaemia. To raise money for others suffering from the disease, the hairdresser organised a oneoff charity show. However, its popularity led to more events and throughout its history it has seen many of the world’s greatest hairdressers taking to the stage. To date it has raised almost £9 million in support of Leukaemia and Lymphoma research.

Hundreds of people attended a memorial service last month to celebrate the life of Vidal Sassoon CBE at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. Among the guests leading the tributes were his wife Ronnie, actor Sir Michael Caine, Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman, fashion designers Mary Quant and Zandra Rhodes as well as hairdressers Nicky Clarke, Lee Stafford, Tony Rizzo and John Frieda. The hour-long Christian and Jewish service included celestial singing, readings and addresses from the late hairdresser’s close friends and family as well as hymns and prayers. Conducted by the Right Reverend Michael Colclough, the congregation was asked to remember Vidal’s “creativity, flair, generosity and friendship.” Lord David Puttnam CBE explained how he’d helped change the nation’s attitude to class by never attempting to conceal his upbringing in an East End orphanage; Rabbi Julia Neuberger from the West London Synagogue led a traditional Jewish Kaddish prayer for mourners and Jeremy Irons read A.E. Housman’s To An Athlete Dying Young. Finally, Sassoon’s son Elan gave a tearful description of his relationship with his father who he said had penchant for “Chelsea soccer and beautiful women” as well as giving money to those in need. Sassoon died on 9 May 2012 after a decade-long battle with leukaemia.
Fudge collaborates with world-renowned architect to launch pop-up salon Fudge joined forces with internationally renowned architect Zaha Hadid recently to launch its first pop-up salon. Set inside her Clerkenwell-based gallery, the cool monochrome space featured bold polygonal shapes on the floor, two single standalone hair stations as well as a model of one of the designer’s latest buildings. Fudge’s creative team offered invitees hair advice and styling as well as cut and colour services. Creative director John Vial comments: “This was an important collaboration for Fudge as it brought hair, fashion and design together to help position the brand as a key player. The feedback from the guests and the buzz it created in the design world was really exciting.” The salon was open for five days to coincide with London Fashion Week and the London Design Festival.

New report commissioned by EasyDry reveals potential hygiene risks behind cotton towels Salon clients could be at risk from bacterial infestations lurking on dirty cotton towels, warns a newly published report commissioned by EasyDry. The eco-towel pioneer says that bacteria such as MRSA can survive on cotton towels for up to 21 days, and that such organisms might not be eradicated during laundering if low temperatures or bleach-free detergents are used. Its disposable versions use grade one bacteria-resistant fibre created in a ‘clean room’ that has an enclosed, almost sterile, environment. The towels are said to inhibit bacteria growth without the use of chemical additives and undergo regular batch testing to ensure they are as close as possible to being sterile without going through a sterilisation process.

Professional salon brands celebrate CoolBrand status Several professional hair and beauty brands have been awarded CoolBrand status by the annual bible, which has just published its eleventh annual edition. MAC, Aveda, Dermalogica, Bumble and Bumble and Philip Kingsley were among the salon favourites topping the lust-lists of the CoolBrands expert council and consumer voters. Co-ordinated by The Centre for Brand Analysis, the prestigious list is drawn from over 10,000 independently identified brands and then short-listed to 1,200. A panel of influencers – which included Millie Kendall, Ruby Hammer, blogger Susie Bubble and Plan B – score each brand with innovation, originality, style, authenticity and desirability in mind before the British public casts its vote. The results reveal the brands most highly rated by both audiences.

Chichester salon Q Hair and Beauty scooped the Education and Training Award last month at the Southern Business Awards 2012. Following on from its regional win, owner Anthony Barnes-Smith and MD Dawn Lawrence (pictured) beat off competition to secure a place as overall frontrunner. The company was the only representative of the hair industry to achieve a final position. The UK’s iiaa has been named Distributor of the Year by international cosmetics brand Jane Iredale. Available in over 40 countries worldwide, the award was secured thanks to the London-based company’s “outstanding success in sales” and “representation of the brand with vision and integrity.” Ishoka Hair and Beauty in Aberdeen has raised £3,300 for the Grampian Children’s Leukaemia Research Fund. The team, which chooses a charity to champion every year, accumulated the funds through various activities including a charity day in the salon where clients took part in a raffle and prize draw. The eponymous owner of Derbyshire’s Sally Montague Hair Group and her artistic team collaborated with Midlands fashion independent Young Ideas last month for its annual fashion show. Showcasing the store’s AW12 lines in front of 100 guests, the team created glossy, side-parted and polished up-dos to enhance each look. As well as promoting the two businesses, the event raised over £1,300 for the NSPCC through ticket sales and a raffle.

They really seem to be making their mark.” New product launches over the past few years have also made creating long natural-looking nails much easier for techs. And as new systems have been perfected and training becomes more widespread, obtaining celebrity and catwalk inspired finishes in the salon has become a reality for today’s heavily influenced clients. “Now products are stronger, last longer and application is made much easier,” Smedley adds. “Ease of use has improved so much, with self-levelling products enabling the technician to perform her service in a more efficient and speedy manner with greater accuracy. This helps for finish filing, as the applied product will have been closer to perfect than ever before.” Rather than using tips and overlaying them with acrylic, this has opened the doors to free-form sculpture, allowing techs to create diverse shapes that are more tailored to the client’s needs. “Free form sculpting is much more popular now,” says Crick. “This gives the technician many more options and enables them to achieve a deeper C curve, which in turn can create an extreme nail.” IMAGES COURTESY OF CREATIVE NAIL DESIGN INC
hort nails have been the manicure choice de jour for a number of years. But as more celebrities experiment with longer styles and fashion designers send their models down the runway wearing exaggerated tips, clients across the country are turning down short shape and paints in favour of artificial nails. Rather than the ‘90s penchant for overtly artificial, square pink and white talons, today’s ultra-trendy versions are natural looking, oval or stiletto in shape, and often impractically long. Moreover, instead of a French finish, new products offering infinite colour options and interesting textures have led to an “anything goes” approach. Justine Crick, CND’s Educator Ambassador of the Year 2012 (Justinecrick.com), thinks that a growing trend for nail art has paved the way for longer styles. “Nails are the latest accessory and over recent years we’ve seen a huge change with top designers and runway shows accessorising manicures to complete the overall final look,” she says. “Nail art is back in fashion and so much more can be achieved on a perfectly extended nail enhancement than a short, natural nail – giving the client more choices.” Indeed, led by the likes of pop stars Rihanna, Katy Perry and Jessie J, there’s been a clear merge between urban culture and high fashion as increasing numbers of women use their nails as an extension of their style.
The road to gel However, the biggest reason for the U-turn in style has been the introduction of advanced products and improved artificial systems. “We initially saw a backlash against the long nail, which came from the thick, fake looking enhancements that were popular in the early ‘90s,” says Rene Lipsitz, director of Bio Sculpture Gel UK. “But technology has advanced so much that now natural looking extensions can be created with a variety of systems – including gel.” Georgie Smedley, director of Nail Harmony UK, agrees that gel is taking over liquid and powder (or acrylic) systems thanks to improved features. “Up until very recently, acrylic systems always seemed to be the favourite for creating long artificial nails,” she says. “However, in more recent years, hard gels have come into

She explains: “Polymers are finer, brushes are superior, monomer odours have been reduced, primers are less aggressive and some product companies now zinc coat their files to reduce heat build up.” According to the expert, the new systems can create nails that are also more wearer-friendly for the client. “As today’s products are more flexible rather than hard rigid set, nails can be left longer as when knocked they flex as opposed to a ridged nail will either pop at base or snap at the stress zone.” Moreover, advances in coloured polymer powders and soak-off gel means techs can get even more creative at the nail table. “There is so much for techs to offer their clients,” Crick says. “They can custom colour blend to their skin tones

and achieve their specific requirements so they are much more individual. Pigment additives are the latest products on the market today and the technicians can use their creativity with these. There are no limits to the artistry that can be achieved.”
Industry evolution Rising demand for soak off coloured gels that are overlaid onto the natural nail has meant some clients are able to grow their own rather than opting for enhancements. Bio Sculpture’s Rene Lipsitz says that while techs can use the company’s hard gels to create sculpted nails, the soak-off product can also aid the growth process. “With Bio Sculpture Gel we can create natural looking sculptures in extreme shapes and styles but it also gives clients the option to grow their own nails,” she says. “The nourishing treatment gives
strength to natural nails, which allows them to grow without breaking.” But whichever system you opt for, the main advice asserted by all the experts is to ensure your techs are up-to-date with training so they can offer clients the best results. “Training on a regular basis is always recommended as product houses improve products and techniques and this needs to be passed onto the technician,” says Smedley. “Many techs do not realise the value of this.” So whether your clients want impractical stiletto nails or neat natural manicures, the only way to keep up with trends is to invest in education. As Timberlake concludes: “The nail industry is ever evolving; who knows what will be introduced next. Nail trends much like hair trends tend to go full circle so brush up on your technical skills and keep ahead.”

ways to have a happy Christmas Make the most of this year’s festive rush with a carefully masterminded strategy DON’T REST ON YOUR LAURELS Just because the salon is busy now, don’t sit back and do nothing. Use the peak time to promote your services to reach even more clients because once January and February arrives, it could be a different story altogether. “Now is a prime time to reach a captive audience,” says Amy Armitage, marketing executive for Xen-Tan and Glamglow UK. “Make sure you not only remind clients of what you offer, but also to let them know how you plan to extend your offering throughout the holiday season. Late night salon evenings once a week can attract an audience you never had before.”
CREATE A FESTIVE AMBIENCE
While clients will probably want to seek sanctuary in your salon away from the hustle and bustle on the high street, creating a Christmas atmosphere can help raise spirits and sales. “A little festive background music can work wonders on Christmas spirit, but rather than choosing music that may irritate, use something that will have a soothing effect,” says Lizzie Benton, PR and marketing assistant at Palms Extra. “Also, why not give your customers a little treat with festive sweets on hand for them to nibble on? A simple gesture like this adds a personal touch to the salon experience.”
SEND OUT CHRISTMAS INCENTIVE CARDS It’s nice to acknowledge your clients’ valued custom with a personalised Christmas card. However, it’s even better to use the tradition to give them a reason to return in the New Year. At the Sally Montague Hair Group in Derbyshire, clients each receive a card containing a recommend-a-friend voucher or treatment offer for January. Meanwhile, at salon group Westrow, clients receive a full-size shampoo and conditioner or a free insalon treatment. “This is a great incentive to encourage repeat business in the quieter month of January,” says director Steve Rowbottom. “These cards are given to every client who visits the salon from mid November through to Christmas Eve.”

Cheaper to send than the traditional versions while still highly effective, sending out e-cards to customers a few days before Christmas is a great way to promote New Year offers. “We send out e-cards like this every year and they always achieve high open rates,” says award-winning fashion stylist and make-up artist Justine Collins of Pinkgloss in Gloucestershire. “The timing still gives clients a chance to ring and book in to take advantage of the promotion before we close for the holiday. It gives clients a good deal after the spending spree of Christmas and ensures that we’re kept busy at a time when business is traditionally quiet.”
BUSINESS OFFER THE FIVE-STAR SERVICE Going the extra mile for clients at all times will always cultivate a happy client base. And during Christmas, when time is short, the small things will really count towards retaining loyal fans. The Richard Ward Hair and Metrospa in Chelsea is not only championing a complete festive menu of pre-party beautifiers including eye-lash extensions and sunless tanning: its team is also offering clients a complimentary dog walking service so they can truly relax and indulge in some muchneeded rest and rejuvenation.
STOCK UP ON GIFTS Take the stress out of Christmas shopping for clients by offering them the perfect gift ideas. At Westrow, the salon’s retail figures can almost quadruple during December thanks to its range of bespoke sets that are heavily promoted through multi-buy offers and a free gift wrapping service. “We pre-pack gift sets based on hair type and texture offering a multi-buy option so clients can buy for friends or family,” says Rowbottom. “We also offer complimentary styling or heat protective products as a gift with the purchase of styling irons and tongs. This definitely increases retail as it offers our clients value for money.”
MAXIMISE VISUAL MERCHANDISING
The way you display your retail gift ideas can make or break a sale. So make sure your message is crystal clear for clients by clearly identifying that you have something for everyone. “People are always on the look-out for buying gifts,” says Armitage. “But think beyond mums, sisters and friends and help clients find something for those harder to buy for – I personally always struggle with grandparents or that secret Santa present. Or, you could also promote your lower priced products as perfect stocking fillers.”
FOCUS ON VALUE Added value is a buzz phrase we’ve heard a lot since the recession. Instead of enticing clients with discounting, offering them more for their pounds will retain your service’s worth and keep them coming back. “This Christmas we’ll be offering bespoke canvas bags full of goodies for every voucher purchased,” says salon owner Sally Montague. And such a move will no doubt raise interest among clients.
INSTIL HARD WORK While it’s known as the party season elsewhere, anyone that works in the salon industry knows that December equals hard work. And while it may not be appreciated initially, team members need to be encouraged to work hard with a range of incentives such as time off in the New Year and commission. “Bookings need to be maximised around the festive season so staff work longer hours as well as Sundays,” says Montague. “This time can be taken off in lieu in early January. The festive period is the time stylists can really increase their retail sales, so they should be committed to spending longer hours in the salon.”
USE EVERY SPACE Take your lead from the nation’s biggest retailers and place great value festive goodies at key points around the salon – including the reception desk. “We like to put an eye-catching and well-signed display of products that would make ideal stocking fillers or small Christmas gifts in a basket by our reception,” says Gary Edge, owner of Zaks Hairdressing in Wolverhampton. “While clients are settling up they cannot fail to see our festive goodie basket and will often make a purchase or two to top up their gift supply. It helps them and is an extra income source for us.”

Joining forces with your key brands for festive promotions can be a great way to make an impact. These can then be used to lead your entire seasonal strategy, taking centre stage in the windows and throughout the salon. “One of the most effective marketing strategies that is often forgotten is to jump on the back of any promotions or gifts your suppliers are marketing over the Christmas season,” says Armitage. “And don’t forget to ask for some beauty press to support any of the initiatives you decide to put in place.”
INVEST IN ON-HOLD MARKETING
When the phones are busy and clients are placed on hold, salons have a captive audience for outlining special offers and promotions. “In the run-up to the festive period, messaging can incorporate opening times, special events, promotions or new products, ensuring customers are given up-todate information when they call to make an enquiry or appointment,” says Mark Williamson, marketing director for PH Media Group. “This ensures any activity carried out will be properly supported. After all, promotions will only work if they are communicated effectively.” Phmg.com

Successful boutiques and retailers hold special events for their most valued customers around Christmas time, so why do the same in the salon? “Organising a small VIP event for your most loyal customers is a brilliant way to show your appreciation and reward them for their continued support,” says Dermalogica’s UK sales manager Celia Rose. “Offer goody bags and serve refreshments while treatment demonstrations take place to encourage advanced bookings.”
Justine Collins suggests revising your opening times so they’re in line with the rest of the high street. “At our Christmas shopping evenings we run a ‘buy two, get one free’ offer on our gift vouchers that can be redeemed for spa treatments. Sometimes clients are so stressed about trying to find a physical gift they forget that a treatment or makes a very thoughtful present and is a real treat for the lucky recipient. These particular gift vouchers have a redemption date from 1 January 2013 so from our point of view it helps with cash flow and drums up business in the New Year too.”
THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX
Festive promotions should excite clients while gently persuading them to re-book or spend more money. And the more creative you can be with achieving this goal, the better. Carl Mitchell, MD of Bonce Salons, always holds a competition in December to give clients a chance to win a free service in the New Year. “This is open to all clients that book an appointment for January in December,” he says. “The great thing is that stylists feel comfortable promoting this and it always gets clients rebooking. It’s been a great way to build up our January bookings and to give us that new start to the New Year.”

PERSONALISE YOUR SERVICE As businesses compete more aggressively for custom, marketing experts are focused on new ways to help firms deliver a personal service. While this is relatively straightforward for addressing clients faceto-face in the salon, some businesses are taking this one step further by installing a caller ID service at the reception desk. Salon software specialist StudioTracker has just added a database linked function to its latest version. The company says the innovative application will enable receptionists to see which client is waiting, when their appointment is and which team member they are seeing before they have even answered the phone. It says that this valuable information will make the reception process more efficient while creating a professional image and improving the overall service (Studiotracker.co.uk).
USE DIRECT MARKETING
INTRODUCE ONLINE BOOKINGS Online booking is the industry’s next big thing and salons are already being somewhat slow off the mark (who books train tickets and flights over the telephone now?). Many salon owners remain frightened by the concept of losing control. But the truth is, the benefits are huge – not only for the client, but for the general running of the business too. Numerous companies are now also hitting the scene offering clients umbrella bookings in return for commission, much like the highly popular versions in the restaurant and hotel trade. Hair and beauty specialist Wahanda is one such firm. Its relatively new Connect system gives salons and spas access to its 1.5 million monthly visitors with its comprehensive suite of

GIVE STAFF PERSONAL ACCESS Another notable technology launch to hit salon owners is the ability to offer staff personal access to their own columns via tablets and smart phones. In a bid to help salon professionals organise their days more effectively, SalonGenius has unveiled its MyGenius software that enables staff to view their up-coming appointment slots and analyse and amend client histories using their own hand-held device without having to leave their station or interrupt the receptionist. The service also means that

Salon software firm Vantage offers a direct marketing function as part of its system as standard. Users can write their own messages if they prefer and handpick the clients they want to target based on services they’ve booked in for in the past and when they last visited the salon. This way of marketing eradicates sending out messages that might be considered spam, meaning a higher percentage of recipients are likely to respond. The youth of today With young team members featuring on every salon floor, Stuart Holmes shares his insight into managing industry newcomers
“M
anaging a team that is made up of a large percentage of under21s requires a very different approach to managing a more mature team. In my experience, younger people respond best to managers who can help coach them through their first few years of employment. Young people don’t want to be patronised; they need to feel valued and just as important as those who have years of experience. “When a young person joins your salon, this could potentially be their first proper job. Therefore you do not only have to train them professionally, you also have to train them for life in the workplace. “For some new staff, this is a big shock. Turning up to work on time, following instructions and acting professionally in front of clients are some of the simple hurdles that we regularly have to iron out when new team members join. A friendly-yet-firm tone from the beginning means that respect for company policy will be engrained from the start. “It’s so important to keep young people motivated. After the novelty of the new job dies down and they realise that the reality of working life is forever, it is imperative that managers continue to provide staff with opportunities to keep them excited and engaged. “All of my team are motivated by the promise of working on magazine shoots and high profile runway shows. From apprentice level up to senior stylist, I like to get everyone involved. “We also offer a vast array of staff social activities too. It is important that managers think outside the box and don’t

just organise activities that would appeal to the older members of the team. At The Stuart Holmes Hair and Beauty Spa we do everything from video nights to trips to Westfield in London and group outings to The Secret Cinema. “Young people need to be nurtured and often need their self-confidence boosted.
If they feel proud of where they work and the opportunities they are offered, this is always a good start. “I always find I get the best results out of our team members by focusing on what they can do instead of what they can’t. Feeling proficient in one area will help them move on to others and feel capable of achieving. “It’s important that all staff – no matter
what their age – feel valued. I want my team members to contribute ideas, so anyone who brings suggestions to my attention is commended. No idea is too silly or weak. I give constant public recognition at all levels to staff that provide valuable business or creative input or show they are thinking about the wider business goals. Some of the best ideas have come from the younger team members during our staff forum sessions. “One skill that young people are sometimes lacking these days is a good grasp of figures and this is vital when working in a commercial salon. As a result, think about what extra support you can provide to help them in this area. We offer regular training courses to help our staff improve their maths and English. These functional skills are now incorporated into NVQs but see what you can do to go over and above. “Finally, staff will come and go – especially the younger ones. They are still finding their direction, so don’t take it to heart. Make sure you protect yourself though by introducing staff bonds for training. We have done this and it works very well. Those that receive a lot of training contribute over 12 months from their wages to a deposit that we retain which helps cover course costs. When they have worked for the salon for a certain period, we then release it back to them. And if this year hasn’t been so kind, don’t worry – think of it as a fresh start and focus on the next 12 months as the year you turned it all around. Either way, if you stay focused and determined to succeed using the following new strategies, the results will follow...
COMMUNICATE Throw a ‘fence’ around your clients. While customer loyalty is rare these days, this doesn’t prevent you from ‘barricading’ your clients so they don’t want to go anywhere else. How? By communicating with them on a regular basis – ensuring you give them interesting and useful information and not just asking them to buy. The truth is, your customers will spend when they’re ready and not when you’re ready to sell – so the most effective thing you can do is keep yourself in their view so that when they do decide to buy, they immediately think of you and not your competitors. FOCUS ON MARKETING Divert your attention to great marketing campaigns. No matter what business you’re in and how good you are at what you do, your real business is in marketing that business. And contrary to what most people believe, marketing is not about selling:
