Support Dogs In this issue we find out more about the valuable work of Support Dogs and how the charity’s canine companions transform the lives of people with autism, epilepsy and physical disability.

B

ack in 1992 the fledgling charity Support Dogs had just three dogs and was based in a hut in the grounds of a cottage hospital on moors on the outskirts in Sheffield. Fast forward 26 years and Support Dogs is now a national charity helping people from Portsmouth to Dundee, with a committed staff and more than 80 volunteers and having successfully trained more than 250 assistance dog partnerships during that time. Over a quarter of a century, thanks to the very special partnerships between canine and human, the lives of hundreds of people with epilepsy and autism, as well as those with physical disabilities, have been transformed. Using an entirely reward-based system, the dogs are trained to carry out a wide range of tasks that make

having a support dog has on partners, parents and the wider family shouldn’t be under-estimated either. In its early days Support Dogs concentrated its efforts in training dogs to help people solely with physical disabilities. Then in 1993, it trained a dog for a woman with a physical disability, who also had epilepsy. Support Dogs’ instructors also decided to train a dog to predict her seizures - and within three months the dog was giving a 30 minute warning of every seizure. Today these assistance dogs are trained to provide a 100% reliable warning up to 50 minutes prior to the onset of an epileptic seizure, which is truly life-changing. In 1997 Support Dogs set up its first national training centre, dedicated to animal behaviourist John Fisher, whose unique approach to dog training formed the foundation of the training methods applied by Support Dogs, and also influenced the development

Super Stanley the life-saver Specialist seizure response assistance dog Stanley is making a real difference to the life of 24-year-old Amy Williams, who has epilepsy. Thanks to the constant support of black Labrador Stanley, Amy Williams now has her life back, and can look forward to a happier future. Fouryear-old Stanley graduatedlast year as Amy’s seizure response dog, provided and trained by Support Dogs. Amy, from Gloucester, explains: “My epilepsy started after I had chickenpox encephalitis as a young child. I now have something called startle epilepsy. This means that when I am surprised or startled by a loud noise or sound I can have an epileptic seizure. This can happen two or three times a day and sometimes at night. Since I left school I became rather isolated because there are no community based services suited to my condition.” The condition meant that her family were extremely anxious about her safety both during the day and night

6 | Total Boarding Magazine

and Amy always needed someone by her side. Amy says: “It got to the point where I was even scared to sleep in my own bed in case I had a seizure in the night and choked or was seriously injured. “After being so reliant on a carer and my family, I was desperate to find a way to increase my independence. Thanks to Support Dogs, I’ve now got Stanley and he has made a huge difference. I feel safer, I am more confident and I now feel much more able to get out of the house.” Whenever Amy now has a seizure, day or night, Stanley is trained to pull an alarm to call for help. He is 100% reliable and never misses a seizure. Stanley has also been trained to help reduce the number of seizures Amy has. For example he has been trained to alert Amy when people are calling at her home; this prevents them knocking loudly on the door and potentially triggering a seizure. Having Stanley also means Amy is

able to have her mobile phone on loud. Previously she would have to have it on silent because the sudden sound could cause a seizure. Amy, who also uses a wheelchair and has limited mobility, also benefits from the support that Stanley gives her with day to day practical tasks. Amy explains: “He’s been trained to pick up things for me when I drop them, help me with getting dressed, open drawers and doors, and fetch the phone. “He has helped me so much. He has given me the confidence to get out of my wheelchair and walk more, knowing if I fall he is there to help me back up. “In Stanley, I have a support dog that will alert my parents or my carer when I am having a seizure, but he also helps with many other aspects of my life. He is not just a life changer, but potentially a life saver. Life is so much better now I have Stanley with me.”

of the seizure alert dog training programme. In 2008, following on from a successful pilot study, the charity launched a new initiative to improve the quality of life for children with autism with its autism assistance dogs. This programme has been extremely successful in helping children with autism and their families. Autism assistance dogs not only help with safety but have been shown to reduce children’s stress and reduce the sensory overload that prevent many from easily leaving the house and accessing community and health services. It can form a link between a child with autism and the world around them, enabling them to develop self-esteem, confidence and better communication skills. Support Dogs doesn’t have its own dog breeding programme, but takes dogs from rescue charities such as Dogs’ Trust, Battersea Dogs’ Home and Blue Cross, also from the Guide Dogs’ breeding programmes, and even council dog pounds. For its disability assistance programme the charity trains a client’s own pet pooches to become their disability assistance dog. And it has just started recruiting puppies from the age of eight weeks who live with local ‘puppy socialisers’ for a year before

their training officially starts. So what makes the ideal support dog? They have to be very sociable, with a sound temperament; not too nervous and not over-confident – an all-round solid, friendly sociable dog. Unsurprisingly, that means largely Labradors and Labrador Retrievers, although some collies, spaniels, terriers and crossbreeds make the grade too. All Support Dogs’ training courses are accredited by Assistance Dogs UK, an international umbrella organisation. It takes on average 18 months to

complete the training of a support dog partnership. The animals spend several weeks on basic training with their trainers before being assessed for suitability as disability, autism or seizure alert dogs. Further weeks of assessment with an instructor, then more training with instructor and client follow, before the dog is allowed home. Finally, after several more months’ hard work, they will hopefully qualify as support dogs, and the start of a relationship that will last around eight years. At the ‘graduation ceremony’

Nick’s support dog has real Poppy appeal For Nick Waldron, the world has shrunk as a result of his multiple sclerosis, and his much-loved support dog is playing an ever-increasing role in keeping him connected to it. Nick, now 68, has had progressive MS for the past 19 years. The onceactive newspaper sales manager is now reliant on wife Maggie, a team of carers, and just as important, his support dog Poppy. The yellow Labradoodle has been Nick’s constant canine companion for the past five years. Poppy accompanies Nick in his electric wheelchair on trips to the shops, and sleeps in Nick’s ground-floor bed room, which has been converted from a dining room. up that he’s dropped, and is trained to fetch help or sound the alarm if and when required. And, as most Support Dogs’ clients attest, the dogs’ most important role is providing companionship, and giving Nick muchneeded confidence when they leave the house. “With both dogs, Molly and now Poppy, people come up and speak to you, which they wouldn’t normally; they are marvellous ice-breakers,” says Nick. ”The dogs give you confidence from that perspective. People are so much more helpful if you have a dog, and they realise you can actually speak!” As MS has taken hold, Nick is now no longer able to get out so often.

But he remains as active as he can, and loves the company of his three grandchildren – who adore Poppy and Molly. He also gives talks to schools and local groups and clubs about Support Dogs, and the difference the charity has made to his life. For Nick, who now only has the use of his left hand, having an assistance dog is all about keeping him connected to the world. “One of the biggest benefits of having a support dog is that it draws people to you,” he says. “You wouldn’t have that pulling power without one. You would feel a lot more alone. These dogs have provided me with a lifeline, and for that I’m immensely grateful to Support Dogs.”

held each year, there is rarely a dry eye in the house… Over the past 25 years the charity has survived some major challenges, not least when its national training centre, opened by its honorary president Angela Rippon in 2005, was devastated by the flood that hit Sheffield two years later. It took a year to recover and rebuild. In 2012 when Rita Howson, who originally started as volunteer with the charity in the early 1990 took over as chief executive after years as a dog trainer and instructor. Since then she has seen the charity profile and reputation grow. The Earl and Countess of Scarbrough and Elaine Paige OBE, have given their support to the charity as patrons. Yet the demand for its works has also grown, with more than 4,000 requests for its services every year. As the charity reached its 25th year in 2017 it also celebrated its first expansion to its training centre in over 12 years when it moved in to additional premises. This expansion means more scope for many more dogs and partnerships to be trained each year. Although this of course means its need to raise funds is greater than ever before, with the charity reliant entirely on voluntary donations. Rita Howson is aware, not only of the massive difference these dogs can make, but also the growing waiting list of people desperate for the support of an assistance dog. “Our clients have such difficult lives, take on the big responsibility of having and working with a dog, then help us in so many ways to raise funds and awareness. I’m in awe of them, and what they do to support us,” says Rita. “They know, first-hand, the difference that a dog can make, and yet there are so many other people out there who need our help too. Our work is far from done, and we’re determined to keep on doing what we do – transforming the lives of people with a range of medical conditions courtesy of our amazing dogs.” For more information about Support Dogs go to the website: www.supportdogs.org.uk

Adam Handley with mum Diane and autism assistance dog Stanley

Adam’s four-legged miracle Too outsiders Grant is just a dog, albeit a handsome black Labrador. To 13-year-old Adam Handley however, Grant is a four-legged miracle, a dog that has transformed the autistic youngster’s life, and that of his family, by increasing his confidence and enabling him to go out, have fun, and relax. Thanks to Support Dogs, Grant has been Adam’s autism assistance dog for the past seven years, and the partnership has been a fantastic success, reports Adam’s mum Diane. Before Grant Adam found speaking and communicating with people outside the family very, very hard,” says Diane. “He couldn’t sleep in his own bed at night, and was very unhappy at school. Also, he had no sense of danger when crossing the road, for example. “Grant made an immediate impact. We quickly got more confident so that if we went out there would be less anxiety and far fewer meltdowns. Having Grant helped us as family to go to new places such as the cinema,

shops and museums.” These days Adam is much happier than he has ever been, his self-esteem has grown, and his communication skills have advanced beyond what his mum could have imagined. He has also formed friendships with children at his school – often difficult for youngster on the autistic spectrum. Grant and Adam still spend a lot of time together and Grant is always on hand to provide emotional support at home as well as physical support when out and about. Diane adds: “When we go out as a family everyone is less stressed and anxious and meltdowns are few and far between. When they do happen, people can see that Adam needs support, so we all feel calmer and can focus on helping Adam and getting back on track.” “Having Grant has enabled Adam to move towards a brighter future. Grant is helping our whole family to live more happily and more independently. We owe him so much; there are no words to describe how much.”

New thoughts on rabbit nutrition

There has long been discussion on the benefits and pitfalls of feeding muesli and nuggets to rabbits. New research results revealed.

T

he year-long research study into the differences between feeding muesli and nuggets to rabbits, commissioned by the Pet Industry Federation, and run in conjunction with Hadlow and Moulton colleges was established to validate a previous study (Meredith et al., 2015; Prebble et al., 2014; Prebble et al., 2015) on the subject of diet presentation and its effects on weight, feed intake and dental health. 32 rabbits were split across Moulton and Hadlow and were not kept in laboratory conditions, but in outdoor pens to simulate how a rabbit may be kept in an outside home environment. The rabbits were allowed free access to hay and water and were provided with driftwood logs as a non-nutritional chew. Both food presentations were similar in nutritional composition and based on FEDIAF guidelines, which provide the most current recommendation for pet rabbits and each set was offered the feed at maintenance levels. The dental health was assessed by a specialist veterinary surgeon at the beginning, middle and at the end of the study. Dental assessments looked at malocclusion, elongation, slanting wear, ridging, fractures of incisors; direction, elongation, step/wave mouth, missing teeth and gingival health of cheek teeth, as well as facial indicators of dental health. Announcing the results of the trial at the Forum, Drs Ambrose Tinarwo (Hadlow College) and Wanda McCormick (Moulton College)

12 | Total Boarding Magazine

revealed that there was no significant difference in either the weight, body condition score or dental health of the rabbits regardless of whether they were fed muesli or nuggets. Both sets of rabbits gained a small amount of weight during the trials and there was a general improvement in dental health in each set which could, the researchers felt, have been attributed to the hay quality and non-nutritional chew. Importantly, all the feed was consumed each day by both sets of rabbits on each diet, so there was no evidence of selective feeding. In concluding, Dr Tinarwo explained to delegates that the trial suggested that feeding the correct amount of feed to maintain a healthy body condition score was more important than whether they were fed nuggets or muesli; and that if this was done incorrectly, then concerns regarding dental health and weight would remain for both diet types. He

also concluded that the importance of good quality hay as the primary diet could not be underestimated in helping to ensure that rabbits remained healthy. Nigel Baker, CEO of PIF said: “We were delighted to have worked with Hadlow and Moulton colleges on this research and are very grateful for the time they have spent establishing the trials and carrying them out with their students. Theses interesting results show, most critically, the importance of conveying correct husbandry advice to pet owners, specifically with regard to their feeding regime. “We look forward to moving on with further studies into defining quality hay and collaborating with both manufacturers, retailers, welfare charities and other trade bodies, to enable owners to have as much correct information about how to feed their rabbits as possible, to help safeguard rabbit health and welfare.

If you go down to the woods today…. You may get an upsetting surprise. As experts warn of a potential UK epidemic of the disease Alabama Rot also known as the ‘’Black Death’, we take a look at how to stop the rot.

A

labama rot or idiopathic cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV) is an often fatal condition in dogs. It was first identified in the USA in the 1980s in Greyhounds but cases are now being seen in other breeds and in the UK and since the discovery of the disease in the UK in 2012, there have been 109 recorded fatalities attributed to it. The disease seems to have no geographic boundaries and has been confirmed in 27 Counties. However there are some areas where the recorded cases are higher than average, for instance 20 plus dogs have died after being walked in the New Forest, but cases have been reported as far apart as Devon, the Lake District, and the Midlands.

Signs and symptoms: Alabama Rot causes initially lesions on the skin. The first sign that is normally seen is a skin sore that isn’t caused by a known injury. Most commonly these sores are found below the elbow or knee and appear as a distinct swelling, a patch of red skin or are open and ulcer-like. However complications start to occur if the disease progresses and can lead to kidney failure. As the disease progresses it causes damage to the blood vessels of the skin and kidneys, causing tiny blood clots to form in the blood vessels which eventually blocks them ultimately damaging the affected tissue. On the skin this causes ulceration but if the disease has progressed to the kidney this can result in acute kidney failure leading to death. 16 | Total Boarding Magazine

Most cases are connfirmed between December and May

Cause

Prevention

The cause is as yet, unknown but 90% of confirmed cases have been in the six months during winter and spring (December – May)

As the cause of Alabama Rot is still unknown, there is no known way to prevent your dog from contracting the disease. Knowing the warning signs is key to treating the disease. If caught early your vet can evaluate if your dog has contracted CRGV. It is thought that the disease is picked up on the paws and legs on muddy walks, so always: • Wash off woodland mud • Check for signs of CRGV • If in doubt call the vet For further information on Alabama rot visit: www.vets4pets.com/stop-alabama-rot

Treatment Primarily symptomatic involving wound management of skin lesions and aggressive supportive therapy when there is kidney failure.

Prognosis Fatal in 9 out of 10 dogs, the better news in that some UK dogs with Alabama rot have been treated successfully. (20-30%)

Growing from strength to strength

The importance of the Association of Licensed Kennels and catteries continues to grow with its 250-strong membership of existing and prospective licensed boarding establishment owners.

T

he Associations’ annual conference is fast becoming an important fixture in the members’ calendar and also attracts interest from pet industry professionals, suppliers and many others considering dipping their toe into animal welfare. Now in it’s second year, the 2017 conference was recently held at the College of Animal Welfare in Godmanchester near Huntingdon and attended by more than sixty delegates. An all-new line-up of high-calibre industry speakers delivered superb presentations on a diverse range of topics with particular relevance to kennel and cattery owners. Sue Hawkins, the Proprietor & Founder, of Hawksmoor Hydrotherapy & Training Centre got the day underway with the importance of diversification in kennel and cattery Services. Throughout her life, Sue has been driven by the philosophy that animals must be cared for in a safe, and loving environment and should receive attention from dedicated and qualified professionals. Originally an extension of the animal boarding service being offered at the time, the Hawksmoor Hydrotherapy Centre was the first to be formally accredited for training in hydrotherapy. Today it’s professionally recognised as a market leader in pet therapy and renowned worldwide for its high standards. Her keynote presentation featured the much debated topic of titre testing. Not only did Dr. Adams provide a valued talk at the Conference, ALIKC is also delighted to announced that she has agreed to join its committee to make regular contributions to the activities and efforts on behalf of licensed kennel and cattery owners in future. In her ‘day job’ as an epidemiological and statistical consultant, Dr Adams is responsible for a number of projects including Pet Nutrition, AMTRA companion animal courses, First Aid for small animals, microchip training and

professional edge required in our mission with the licensed kennel and cattery sector and is able to guide us on all aspects relating to animal welfare and is, furthermore, an accomplished public speaker and lecturer”. Stephanie Kleyman partner in London law firm, Kleyman & Co Solicitors, spoke about understanding the law and how it affects the animal boarding business. An experienced commercial solicitor specialising in advice and assistance from start-up, her presentation covered some of the common business mistakes and the legal steps to get it right first time. Boarding industry issues ranging from the sale of a business and premises to drafting agreements and transferring ownership, legal process and documentation, financial obligations and what records business owners are required to keep were all covered in this hugely informative talk. Marketing and lead generation consultant Diana Chrouch works with SME’s to help achieve their income goals. She’s also a special advisor on the UK economic blueprint project for small businesses under the patronage of Prime Minister, Theresa May. With experience in the veterinary industry, Diana presented valuable insight into the social media challenges and needs of pet boarding owners including key advice on new business generation. Peninsula Business Services have been protecting employers for many years. They deliver over a million pieces of HR advice every year and look to support business of all sizes in minimising disruption within their organisation. Business Development Manager, Savio Zuzarte clarified a number of key areas where licensed kennel and cattery owners could put measures in place to protect their business. Explaining why health and safety legislation can be complicated but in place for good reason, the Peninsula representative pointed out that HR law is demanding and can be challenging for business owners to implement. hazardous substances, fire risks, fire extinguishers and emergency lighting to manual handling, procedures, organisation and documentation. SAI Global has created a quality assurance standard for pet boarding establishments aligned to local authority legal requirements and incudes gold standard recommendations. SAI Welfare Schemes Manager, outlined how the scheme provides independent verification of standards in several areas including pet arrivals, animal accommodation, grounds and exercise areas, animal health and welfare, feeding and the provision of water, health and safety, waste disposal and team training. There are likely to be a number of benefits of pet welfare quality assurance including the independent verification of a caring, clean, safe and skilled boarding establishment. It also enables the promotion of high standards of animal care, highlighting areas for improvement and demonstrates dedication to pet care and customer expectation. Leslie Heaton-Smith, Marketing and Development Director at the College of Animal Welfare and Vet Skill Ltd brought the keynote speakers to a close with an excellent presentation selecting the right staff for kennels and catteries as well as understanding the meaning of qualifications presented on CVs. Association members enthusiastically engaged with Q+A sessions and appreciated the value of this annual ALIKC event that they felt was a great asset for networking and advice and an excellent source of industry information. In closing this year’s Conference, ALIKC Chair Gregory Warman told delegates that ALIKC has now firmly established itself as the representative voice of a growing number of licensed kennel and cattery owners. He outlined how membership of the Association brings a number of benefits, including the latest information and news from the canine and feline world with particular focus on protecting the future of the licensed industry. Fit and Healthy Felines Although your cat may appear happiest when curled up on the sofa, Nicole Paley of the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association explains why it’s important that this cushion-like state is not accepted as the norm all day long!

ats can happily spend up to 16 hours a day sleeping but with obesity levels rising and recent research suggesting that 47% of cats are overweight/obese, it is clear that we need to counter-balance this down time with increased exercise – in addition to a diet check.

CAT CHECK First things first… it’s important to keep an eye on your cat’s weight and to monitor it regularly. PFMA has developed a series of Pet Size-OMeters (pet owner friendly charts to help owners assess whether their pet is a healthy size) for cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs and pet birds. PFMA encourages owners to keep a more conscious eye on their pet’s shape by using these charts as part of their regular home care routine. The charts can be downloaded from the PFMA website or hard copies can be requested online. Many vet practices use the Pet Size-O-Meters for their weight management clinics and increasingly retailers are giving them as handouts to owners or using the display posters for visuals in the shop. Could they be useful in your establishment?

Playing helps cats simulate their natural hunting behaviour

PORTION CONTROL Research has shown that vets consider portion control to be a major contributory factor to obesity and a good proportion of pet owners are not following the feeding guidelines. The guidelines are a starting point for how much to feed based on the size of a pet but a variety of other factors need to be taken in to account including level of activity, neutering status, age etc. Owners are encouraged to start with the recommended amount, keeping an eye on weight and then adjust the 22 | Total Boarding Magazine

amount accordingly. Avoid scraps and limit treats. It’s hard to monitor but print off our food diary from https://www.pfma.org.uk/weightmanagement-tools to help you keep track.

LET’S GET PETS FIT Insufficient exercise is a root cause of pet obesity and vets say this is particularly evident for cats (46%). The good news is that luckily most cats

love to play, which makes it easy to incorporate an increased amount of exercise into their daily routine – and even into their feeding regime! Playing helps cats simulate their natural hunting behaviour and is therefore important for their mental well-being too.

Working for food With natural behaviour in mind, our top tip is to make cats work for their food. Just two simple changes – introduce plastic foraging balls and increase the distance between the cat’s water and food bowls, can make a difference to mealtimes. These seemingly small things really do work and help burn calories over time.

Toy Time The shops are full of ingenious toys such as catnip mice, exercise balls and bells. Despite the growing choices, many cats are content with a cardboard box and feathers tied onto a stick.

Play TiPs The key to getting cats excited by play is to turn it into a hunting game. Once the favourite toy has been identified, we

suggest hiding it away for a few days. The cat’s penchant for play will have intensified when this toy is revealed again.

HoW mucH? Guidelines suggest approximately 40 minutes daily for a cat. Play time should be introduced in short and regular bursts. The quantity of exercise a cat needs

will vary with age, existing health conditions and breed has an impact too. For example, some pure breeds are extremely active e.g. Siamese and Turkish. Again, we advise owners check with their vet for bespoke advice.

TiPs for indoor caTs Indoor cats will certainly need a more creative approach and an increased amount of play time. Although it’s impossible to replicate the exact experience of outdoor hunting and patrolling, toys and games will help.

summing uP All cats are different and, like humans, some are more active than others. However, it is not normal to be totally disinterested in play time. Inactivity may indicate a medical problem so if the cat is struggling to engage in play, then a visit to the vet for advice could be useful.

Supplying Catteries and Kennels for over 40 years

Manufacturing Catteries is what we do

We don’t build sheds, or garden furniture, we design and build premium bespoke living accommodation for cats. This is a new era for animal housing. Expectations have risen dramatically over the last 5 years meaning customers want larger, lighter, luxurious living spaces for their beloved animals and what better way to ease the wave of guilt you might feel when leaving home watched by two large, sad eyes, than to know your furry friend will be enjoying five star luxury in your absence. Each individual cat house or run is made from scratch by the team of expert joiners in our factory near Bristol. Some weeks we are busy manufacturing enormous 30 pen catteries ready to be delivered and installed in Scotland, other days we will be putting together a bespoke garden run for a cat lover a couple of miles away. Whatever we are doing, we are doing it with the love, care and attention to detail that people have come to know and expect from a Lindee Lu building.

Whether you foster, breed or have been thinking about running a little business from home with a boarding cattery, we are here to help you make your dreams a reality. Why not give us a call for a chat? We don’t hard sell, we don’t insist you buy a minimum number of pens and it doesn’t matter how large or small your project is. Off To Puppy School There are many great puppy classes out there to choose from but it’s important to do the research before signing up. Becky Howe points us in the right direction.

Recall - an important command to master!

P

uppy owners will often look to join a local puppy class whether it’s to get help and advice, meet other puppy owners or socialise and train their puppy. This helps to ensure their puppy gets the best possible start in life. This is a great choice and can really benefit the puppy’s development, however there are things to consider before choosing the training class you join. Methods and equipment used Today dog training generally consists of positive reinforcement training methods. This means we use a reward to reinforce a behaviour we like but ignore the behaviours we don’t want. This way we are able to guide our dogs into making the correct choices to help them get it right in the future. These are the methods scientifically proven to work with the old fashion aversive methods proven to be unnecessary. Puppies should only be walked and trained in a properly fitted flat collar or harness. Classes should only allow puppies to arrive at training in flat collars and harnesses so check on the equipment being used in class. It isn’t unheard of to see training classes using

26 | Total Boarding Magazine

Practicing some walking on a loose lead

equipment such as choke chains in class so this is something to be wary of.

Content Look at the class content and see if this suits your needs. Is the class offering a mix of socialisation and basic obedience? An important part of puppy training is socialisation. A good puppy class will incorporate this in the course with a focus on handling, meeting people and dogs as well as getting used to novel stimuli such as sounds and sights. Ensure there is a mixture of exercises in each class. Ideally each exercise should only be carried out for a few minutes before moving on to something else to keep both you and your puppy interested. Will your dog be off lead for puppy play? Puppy play should be controlled to ensure it is an enjoyable and positive experience for all involved. This being said, only small numbers of puppies should be let off at one time. The puppies should be matched to ensure they are suitable to play together safely.

Down – useful for various situations such as a vet examination

Class numbers Is the class size large? The class size will vary dependant on the venue and the available space however a sensible number of puppies is a maximum of 8 per class. If the hall is large then there could be 8 puppies per class however with smaller venues it may only be safe to accommodate 5 – 6 puppies per class. The puppies need to be able to have their own space so they feel safe and have plenty of room to practice the exercises taught in class. If the space is too small it may be that puppies are unable to concentrate and shy puppies may feel uncomfortable being in such close proximity to unfamiliar puppies and people. It’s also important to ensure there is enough time to help everyone throughout the class.

Puppy ages For puppy classes, ideally the puppies should be of a similar age to ensure safety in the class. This means puppies are likely to be matched better for play to ensure they are safe and have an enjoyable experience. This also means that the puppies are likely to be at the same level of training so everyone

Location and venue

Instructors

The time and location of the class can be an important factor. It’s important to look around and pick the most suitable class but also consider the time it takes to travel to the venue. Make sure you’re able to arrive in good time and take your puppy for a short stroll to calm them from the car journey and allow them a chance to toilet.

Are the instructors friendly and willing to help? The trainer running the class should be friendly and show and interest in you and your puppy. The instructor should teach the class as a whole including a demonstration for each exercise. During the class they should be keeping an eye for anyone struggling with the exercise so they can help and guide on an individual basis when needed. It is essential to get puppy training right as this is a key part of the dog’s development, allowing them to gain essential socialisation and training. During this time it’s really important to get plenty of positive experiences. A good training class can enable an owner to set their puppy up for success, meaning their puppy is able to deal with everything they may experience later in life and therefore reducing the possible behaviour issues in the future. This means it’s really important to see a knowledgeable and experienced trainer to ensure you get the best possible

Class visit It doesn’t hurt to ask to view the class without your puppy. Many training classes are happy for you to come along and watch the class to see if you like the methods used and the content. This will give you a better idea as to whether you would like to train your puppy in that environment and with that particular trainer. By visiting without your puppy you will be able to view the environment and teaching. Look out for calm puppies, handling methods, methods of teaching as well as the instructors teaching and attitude towards the puppies and owners in 28 | Total Boarding Magazine

advice and your puppy gets the best start in their training. There are many organisations offering puppy classes. I am part of Puppy School and run classes in the Tiverton (Devon) area. All puppy school tutors use positive reinforcement training methods and are happy to have classes viewed before signing up to a course. Puppy school teaches many exercises such as recall, walking on a loose lead, positions, stay and leave. There is also a big emphasis on socialisation including meeting dogs, people and children as well as handling and socialisation to scary things. This is all carried out in a safe and controlled environment. Becky Howe BSc (Hons) is a dog walker, pet sitting and dog trainer. Working with companion animals for over 8 years she has a passion for improving the quality of life for companion animals. Specifically by aiding dog owners in understanding their dogs better and helping to improve their quality of life through early socialisation and training for a happy dog.

Welfare crisis looms for flat faced dog breeds commonly used in advertising Organisations with an interest in dog welfare have penned an open letter asking companies to stop using ‘flat faced’ (brachycephalic) dogs to sell products

T

he Brachycephalic Working Group is warning that certain brachycephalic breeds have seen huge rises in popularity in recent years, driven by their increased prominence in advertising. These dogs are often considered to look appealing, cute or comical, but breeding primarily for their looks has led to health problems associated with their body conformation in a substantial proportion of them. These problems include breathing difficulties caused by anatomical defects in the upper airways, recurring skin infections as a result of skin folds, eye disease, inability to give birth naturally or properly regulate body temperature, and spinal disease. According to registration figures released by the Kennel Club, the French Bulldog has seen a staggering 3,104 per cent increase over the last ten years, the Pug a 193 per cent increase and the Bulldog a 96 per cent increase in the same time period. However, the number of dogs from these breeds in the country is likely to be far higher in reality, due to undocumented and unregistered dogs and dogs that have been brought into the country illegally from Eastern Europe. Sudden boosts in popularity of certain breeds can result in a huge and profitable market opening up. Puppies can be churned out with little or no regard for their health and welfare, solely for profit, because they are so easy to sell due to their looks. The use of these breeds to advertise products or services only perpetuates their appeal. It is widely believed by those with an

30 | Total Boarding Magazine

interest in dog welfare, that ethical advertisers and companies have an important role to play in reducing the demand for breeds that can suffer from health problems. Dr Dan O’Neill, Senior Lecturer in Companion Animal Epidemiology at the Royal Veterinary College, and Chairman of the Brachycephalic Working Group, said: “There is a real concern that the use of French Bulldogs, Bulldogs and Pugs in adverts is fuelling the popularity of these breeds, and is widening the market for those who simply wish to make money from these dogs with little or no regard for their health and wellbeing.’’ The Brachycephalic Working Group was set up in 2016 to look at ways to tackle the health and welfare issues that can affect brachycephalic dog breeds. Signatories of the open letter include the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA), the British Veterinary Association (BVA), Bulldog breed clubs, Dogs Trust, French Bulldog breed clubs, the Kennel Club,

The Pug has seen a 193 per cent increase in the last 10 years

PDSA (People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals), Pug breed clubs, Royal Veterinary College (RVC), the RSPCA and the University of Cambridge. Companies are encouraged to contact the Brachycephalic Working Group to pledge their commitment to dog welfare by avoiding the use of brachycephalic breeds in advertising and on products. They can do this by contacting BWG@ thekennelclub.org.uk or media@bva. co.uk.
