News and Product Round-up Pet Industry Confirms Interest in Petindex The Pet Industry Federation (PIF), organisers of the Petindex show, have announced a strong start to sales of trade stands for the event. The UK’s newest pet trade show, which takes place from 26-27 April 2020, is aimed at all types of pet businesses, so will not only attract groomers, kennels/ catteries and retailers, but also potential pet influencers such as dog walkers, home boarders and day care owners. The trade show will incorporate an international zone for overseas companies and PIF is working with an overseas media partner, Dähne Verlag, publishers of PET Worldwide, to drive interest from overseas visitors. There will also be an Incubator Zone for new suppliers/manufacturers and a strong focus on education with a host of relevant seminars for pet professionals taking place for the duration of the event, as well as the 2020 British Dog Grooming Championships. The on-site DoubleTree Hilton hotel has been secured for the Pet Industry Federation Awards, which will take place on the Sunday night making it really convenient for exhibitors and visitors alike to attend and celebrate after a day at the show. Nigel Baker, PIF CEO, commented: ‘We are delighted that so many trade exhibitors have confirmed their interest in Petindex by securing a stand at the show. The aim of Petindex is simply to bring the whole pet industry under one roof at the same time by offering a range of features for pet professionals looking for more than just a trade show.’ 4 | www.christiesdirect.com

Jo Amit, co-founder of HOWND, said: ‘We are always keen to exhibit at new shows, especially if the organisers have run successful trade events in the past with strong pre-event marketing in the lead up. We have been exhibiting at the British Dog Grooming Championships for years now and always been very happy with the results. What drew us to Petindex was the diversity of the show. We will be able to network with a wider selection of prospects, helped by the fact that entrance is free. We often have to miss the PIF awards so having this take place at the same event is a significant saving.’ Georgina Bashforth, MD of Leucillin, said: ‘We are delighted to have booked our stand at PIF’s fresh take on an industry trade show, which looks to welcome through its doors not only retail business’ but also all pet care professionals and enthusiasts from all corners of the market. As specialists in animal skin health our Leucillin Animal Skincare is a broad spectrum product which has a huge variety of

uses and benefits for all animal owners, professionals and care providers.’ Donna Piercy, from GHS Direct, explained: ‘GHS has been making and supplying hygiene products for over 30 years. We have many contacts and we supply all types and sizes of businesses and people within the animal care sector. This new show will be an ideal opportunity to meet new and existing customers, promote our products and the Company. I feel the show will be extremely popular and will attract many visitors. GHS are therefore very much looking forward to being an exhibitor.’ Petindex trade stands are available in a range of sizes and are competitively priced with each one including shell scheme, fascia board, carpet, power and light. PIF members receive a generous 20% discount on the price of their stand. Cool for canines PetWeighter launches new colour options to complement neutral home interiors The ingenious ‘dog bowl that stays’ now available in Pearly White and Platinum colourways Previously only available in vibrant colours, Peak Pet Products has announced the addition of two stunning PetWeighter™ bowls in cool neutral tones. Designed to complement stylish modern interiors, the PetWeighter Pearly White and the PetWeighter Platinum are available now at a suggested retail price of £24.99. Thanks to feedback from PetWeighter customers from the UK and USA, the British company has created these two brand new subtle shades to add real style to any contemporary home environment. Launched in 2016, PetWeighter is an innovative product that has revolutionised feeding time for fourlegged friends. The clever invention features a unique design to prevent the spills and mess that can often result from an ‘ever-moving’ food or drinking bowl. It also ensures a constant supply of water, whatever the season*. Engineered by a resourceful dog owner for his Schnauzer, Charlie, who was diagnosed with diabetes, this clever product was originally created to stop

6 | www.christiesdirect.com

him tipping the bowl and therefore provide his canine pal with access to plenty of water throughout the day. Strong and sturdy, the two-part PetWeighter comprises a removable bowl on top of a base that can be filled with sand, water or a combination of the two. This means that the highstrength, food-grade plastic bowl will not move when a dog nudges it – and stops the container and contents from travelling across the kitchen or garden. It will also stay put if a clumsy human kicks it by accident or a mischievous child knocks into it while playing on the floor. Simply unscrew the cap, fill and then secure again, replacing the bowl on the top, for a robust receptacle that will always ‘sit’ and ‘stay’! When completely full, the PetWeighter can tip the scales at a mighty 13kg – enough to prevent food and water spills by even the biggest of hungry hounds. The PetWeighter bowl is detachable for washing or filling with food and can be placed on a dishwasher top rack for a thorough, hygienic clean. The top is then easily aligned to the base and

locked straight back into place with a simple click. The rounded corners of the PetWeighter make it conveniently chewresistant, while the bowl itself has no dirt-attracting cracks or crevices. As well as providing ongoing access to water, the PetWeighter is great news for arthritic dogs** at meal times as its elevated height (21cm) removes the need to stoop down, which can put stress on joints, necks and shoulders, particularly in older animals. PetWeighter Pearly White and Platinum come with a complementary dark grey base. The product is also available in Red, Turquoise Blue, Pale Pink or Hot Pink with a mid-grey base. Rob Peacock, owner of Peak Pet Products Ltd, said, “We’ve been blown away by the popularity of our existing colour range, but we listened to feedback from our customers around the world, who were seeking bowls to match their neutral kitchen and utility room designs. We recognise that greys and natural tones have become more fashionable in recent years and have answered their wishes with the Pearly White and Platinum shades.” Designed by award-winning British small business, Peak Pet Products Ltd, PetWeighter has a suggested retail price of £24.99 and is available at Amazon. co.uk and authorised pet retailers around the UK. “Ooh! Two New Shampoos!” Two New Products Boost Award Winning Range

L

eading pet care brand Animology is boosting its multi-award winning product range with the addition of two new specialist shampoos for dogs – Animology Curly Coat and Animology Deep Clean. Animology Curly Coat is a shampoo specifically designed for curly coated dogs. Enriched with oatmeal and shea butter, it helps to remove knots from a dog’s coat and improve overall appearance, maintaining the structure and texture of the coat without overconditioning. Animology Deep Clean is an intensive shampoo that penetrates the coat to target, loosen and remove stubborn dirt and malodour to leave even the thickest of coats clean and fresh. Martin Breen, Group55’s Sales Director for Pet Care commented; “Animology is firmly established as a favourite grooming brand amongst dog owners, with a “go to” product in the range for almost everyone. “The addition of our two new shampoos reinforces that reputation and delivers the sort of product innovation

that Animology is synonymous with. “Curly Coated dog breeds are increasingly popular, and yet there is relatively little on the market that specifically caters for their grooming needs. “Deep Clean ticks the box for owners of those dogs who just love dirt, and I’m sure it will prove to be another

essential product for those people for whom grubby dogs are an occupational hazard!” Animology Curly Coat and Animology Deep Clean are immediately available, direct from Group55 and from pet specialist wholesalers. Both products carry a SRP of £5.50.

Amanda Holden is Wetnose Day Celebrity

C

harity fun event Wetnose Day will be on September 20th this year and celebrity, Amanda Holden is joining the celebrations. She said: “As a family we have two adorable dogs, Buddy and Rudie, who are loved and cherished every single day. Sadly some animals are abandoned, unwanted or mistreated, finding their way to rescue centres. The thought of any pet suffering or being abandoned is unthinkable to me but this does sadly happen, and is on the rise. This is why I’m so keen to support Wetnose Day. 8 | www.christiesdirect.com

“Animal Rescue Centres across the UK are in desperate need of funds so they can rescue, rehabilitate and rehome pets. These centres are experiencing fewer donations but an increasing number of animals. “Many of the smaller sanctuaries are full to bursting and need help to buy food, equipment and pay large vet bills. Please join me and support those without a voice. “Join Wetnose Day this September 20th and let’s all ensure every animal, no matter how big or small, finds their forever home.”

Battersea Pair Struggle to Find Home Second Time Around

A

pair of mature Staffordshire Bull Terriers at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in Old Windsor have been waiting for over 100 days to find their perfect home, but so far have not had any luck in finding a new family. The pair’s owners adopted them separately from the Berkshire centre as young dogs. Sadly, through no fault of their own, nine-year-old Roxy and sixyear-old Conkers have found themselves back at Battersea again after their owners’ circumstances changed. The first time Roxy came to Battersea, she stayed for just 28 days, while Conkers stayed for 38. Since finding a home together, the duo has been inseparable. But now, the pair are struggling to find the right owners and have now been at the centre for three times the average length of stay for a Battersea dog. Sean Welland, Rehoming and Welfare

10 | www.christiesdirect.com

Manager at Battersea Old Windsor said: “When Roxy and Conkers came to Battersea as much younger dogs, they had no problems finding a new home. But, now that they’re slightly older, and are looking for a home as a pair, they’re really struggling to find a new family to live with.” “Although they may be slightly more distinguished than before, Roxy and Conkers are still young at heart. They love nothing more than chasing one and other around the garden or playing with toys and their favourite people.” “Many people prefer to rehome younger dogs, as they will have them for longer and spend most of their lives with them. But older dogs definitely have their own advantages; this pair have some lovely manners in place already and have years of love to give. They would love for someone to give them a retirement home together.” As Roxy and Conkers find being

in kennels quite stressful, they are currently spending some time in a foster home. Now, they are looking for new owners with experience of bubbly bull breeds. If you would like to give this pair the perfect retirement home, please visit www. battersea.org.uk.

Eight Key Canine Emotions and How to Identify Them No doubt experienced groomers will be familiar with these signs, but you may want to share these with less experienced clients:

D

og-owners wanting to better understand their pets have been offered advice on how to translate eight canine emotions. Pet specialists from Pure Pet Food have revealed how to read dogs’ body language – and owners should pay special attention to tails and ears. Just like humans, dogs are capable of feeling anxious, angry and playful, and these emotions are primarily conveyed through their body language. Whilst a happy dog will have its ears up straight and a wagging tail, an anxious or fearful dog will avoid eye contact, cower, and tuck its tail between its legs. A spokesperson for Pure Pet Food said: “Just like humans, dogs can show their emotions through the way they handle their bodies. “Helping dog owners understand what their pet is wanting to say can be a big step in developing the relationship between humans and their canine companions. “Nobody knows their dog better than the owner. The more time they spend together, and the better the human is at reading their dog, the stronger the relationship will be.”

1. Happy Your dogs’ ears will be up (not forward) with their tail down and relaxed, unless of course it’s wagging which is a good indication any dog is happy.

2. Alert The main sign of an alert dog is the ears being forward and they may twitch if they’re trying to listen out for a 14 | Total Grooming Magazine

specific sound. Their eyes will be open and bright as they concentrate.

wary when introducing strangers to your pet.

3. Anxious

6. Angry

Avoiding eye contact is a key trait of an anxious dog. Their body and tail will be still and slightly lowered. Sweaty footprints can also be an obvious sign, along with a raised paw and ears flattened.

Dogs will make themselves look as big as possible in the face of a threat, so a stiff body and fur standing on end is what to expect. Their mouth will also be open as they bare their teeth. The weight of the dog will mainly be over the front two feet in preparation to lunge and attack.

4. Fearful Dogs can show fear in different ways. Some will cower, others may roll on their back and some will bark or growl. A tucked tail and darting eyes whilst they concentrate on the source of fear is often a giveaway.

5. Vulnerable Many dogs can feel unsure about meeting new people, making them feel vulnerable. They may roll onto their back with their paws in the air. But many people consider this to be a sign of wanting their belly rubbed, so be

7. Relieved A relieved dog can often be easy to spot when their position changes from a previously angry or anxious position. They will visibly relax, with the eyes softening and head returning to a lower position.

8. Playful Resting on the front legs with a raised bottom and a wagging tail are the main giveaways of a playful dog. Bringing a toy over is a pretty good sign too!

Treating Customers Fairly

Debby Knight of Bristles Grooming Salon & Training Centre provides her advice on how to handle complaints in a positive manner

A

re you delivering a good quality standard groom? How do you judge? In order to treat your customers fairly, set a criteria for each breed you groom and set a complaints procedure in place.

How should we handle complaints? Firstly, look at why the customer is complaining and examine whether they have grounds to complain. You can help to manage their expectations and so provide fewer grounds for complaint by implementing the following procedure: When a new customer calls look to build a rapport with the customer by discussing their breed of dog and expressing enthusiasm for grooming it. Next ask them questions. For example: How old is it? Has it been groomed before? Why are you changing your groomer? Has it any issues? All this information will lead to a potential price and what is achievable. Your customer is likely to be impressed that you are asking questions and in turn, you will have an idea of their expectations. Next, when the dog arrives for its appointment, don’t just put a card in front of them and ask them to fill it in and then grab the dog and put it in a cage. Instead, fill in the card asking all the questions you asked when booking the appointment then place the dog on the grooming table and go over it with the customer. If it is a clip off, make sure the customer understands and agrees to how it will look and ensure the customer completes 18 | Total Grooming Magazine

a consent form. You won’t need to do this every time the customer comes in but it is a must for new customers as a lot of problems result from a breakdown in communication and when expectations aren’t understood or met. Next, how are you going to handle the customer who’s dog you have just nicked / cut? You need to be honest. Don’t pretend it Debby Knight didn’t happen, whether it is your fault or the dog’s the customer will not be happy. Just explain and don’t charge them and apologise. Most people will be fine about it. If you have a customer takes their dog home and then says it has an injury, maybe you missed it, maybe it happened after it got home . Listen to what the customer has to say, be sympathetic and apologise Ask them what they would like you to do about it, they won’t expect this and you don’t have to admit liability. Keep records of calls, visits etc so you can

refer back to them and lastly don’t put off resolving the issue. Keep in contact with the customer and update them, especially if it has been referred to your insurance company. Ignoring a complaint and hoping it will go away is not an option as your reputation is at stake particularly in this technological age where social media rules. Businesses live or die by their reputations, so you need to protect yours.

erbal medicine works in the same way as modern medicines because plants contain elements which have a direct physiological effect on the body. Many medicines used by doctors and vets today are still derived from plants or are a synthetic copy of them. When science enabled production of synthetic copies of plants or their compounds, it became unfashionable to use the whole plant material. Advantages of a synthetically produced drug are that it eliminates natural variation in plant batches, removes contamination during the harvesting/ drying, enables accurate administration and is cheap to produce. However, the advent of these drugs also generated increased incidences of adverse reactions and side effects. It is here that the difference between herbal and allopathic modern medicine really lies. The whole philosophy of herbal medicine is that by using the whole plant, and very often a combination of plants, the patient, whether human or animal, is taking a mixture of many thousands of naturally occurring complex elements which are contained in each plant. The action of herbs may sometimes be slower than the modern drugs that we have all become accustomed to using but, the advantage of fewer side-effects and of using a medicine that works in a more natural way makes this form of medicine very useful and increasingly the preferred one for the treatment. Of course, it is because the side effects are minimal, and instances of adverse reactions are few

that herbal medicines are so popular. All medicines, whether herbal or conventional are subject to the same standards of quality and safety, with the exception that herbal medicine manufacturers are not required to undertake any animal testing procedures, and this is something that is reassuring for many people who are concerned about the animal testing methods used to establish safety standards for modern drugs. Dorwest Herbs are proud to be a British company celebrating over 70 years in business and the undisputed experts in herbal pet care. Dorwest not only produce medicines to treat common conditions such as

arthritis, incontinence, skin complaints and minor infections, they also make a comprehensive range of dietary supplements to the same quality standards, formulated to keep dogs and cats healthy and support them at various stages of life. With the greater demand now for medicines and supplements that work in harmony with our pets’ bodies, herbal products are not only appropriate, but are widely used by owners and their vets alongside modern medicine when needed. So next time, when treating a common condition for your pet, seek advice from the experts in herbal pet care. Visit www.dorwest.com to find out more, naturally.

Home or Away - Options for Delivering a Pet Grooming Service This month Heidi Anderton looks at the best options for delivering a pet grooming service. Heidi is principal of Absolutely Animals and London School of Pet Grooming, with over 30 years in the business, Heidi is a highly qualified and experienced industry expert as well as an award-winning groomer, former Groom Team England member and founder member of the British Isles Grooming Association (BIGA).

T

he pet grooming industry is diverse, which makes it so difficult to regulate and advise on methods, routines and animal behaviours. Environments where grooming is offered can make all the difference to the end result and to your pocket, whether you are employed or self-employed.

Home grooming Grooming pets in the comfort of the client’s own home is not to be sniffed at; no pun intended. This was the route I took after I left my training; I loved it! I really got to know the pets and their owners, and some became friends and long-time clients too, who I still have to this day; some 30+ years on! Advantages – Grooming on a 1-1 basis, with the pet in their own environment. Going to a different place every day. Having a closer bond with the owners in an informal setting. Disadvantages –Time consuming travelling and setting up. Can be physically difficult, bending while bathing, lifting equipment and not having another pair of hands to help. This is usually a self-employed option for offering a pet grooming service. Excess hair in the client’s home can be a disadvantage for some clients. “I trained with Absolutely 26 | Total Grooming Magazine

Animals over three years ago and have since been grooming in peoples’ homes. It is great as I really get to know them and many of them are waiting with tea, biscuits and chat. It’s surprising the things they tell you (sometimes quite surprising)! The downside can be timings setting up due to parking, traffic and packing, the table in and out the car can take its toll on you physically and some dogs do behave differently with owners’ present. You need to make boundaries clear for the owners, like not distracting the dog while you are scissoring and not coming in and out of the room whilst you are working. No two days are the same, but I love it!” Sue Wright

High Street Salon grooming Usually a team effort but grooming from the high street can be a real toll unless you have another income stream, such as selling pet products, pet day care or offering hydrotherapy. Advantages –You can gain employment easily in high street salons/chains. All equipment is at the right height. There is usually a team for support. More pets are groomed in a shorter space of time. No distractions from clients. Room for growing your business and improving your employment level. Disadvantages –Bills, Bills, Bills! Rent, rates, service charges, taxes, other premises costs, PAYE, Wages, Pensions, Staff training and Welfare, Administrative expenses, legal and Professional costs – the list goes on! “I opened my own salon in 1995. I gained assistance from the Princes Trust, but we didn’t have access to the internet then, so things were a lot more challenging than they are today. My salon has developed from a dog grooming salon into a salon and training school with a large cat grooming clientele as well.” Heidi Anderton

Mobile Grooming Another option is to offer a grooming service in a mobile van. These vans are now professionally fitted out. Drive to the client’s home, set up in the driveway 28 | Total Grooming Magazine

or in the street. You will never be in the same area for too long. Advantages - Low-cost lay out. Provide a very convenient service with no mess in the client’s home. Grooming on a 1-1 basis, flexible grooming times. Tools at right height and accessible. No distraction from clients. Covers a large catchment area. Van provides your own advertising. Disadvantages –Will be too expensive to pay for parking in some areas, mostly a self-employed option for delivering pet grooming. You need to hook up to the customers electric. Can be hot in the summer and cold in the winter depending on your insulation. Can be lonely. “I run a mobile dog grooming business in London. My van has been converted into a grooming salon by Wet Pets Conversions who have done a brilliant job. Before I started my business, I trained at Absolutely Animals with Heidi and Christine and their wonderful staff. It was an amazing environment to train in as it wasn’t just the handling and grooming of dogs that I needed to learn. It was how to run a business, dealing with customers and getting my pricing right to run a successful business. Absolutely Animals are the company that helped me get to where I wanted to be, they taught me everything I needed to know about dog grooming. Even now that I have left they are still on the other end of the phone if I ever have a question or query about dog grooming.” “The pros of being mobile: Very convenient for my customers as I travel to them and give their dog one to one attention in their own surroundings. I get to travel to different locations throughout the week. Different scenery. Overheads are lower than a salon as it is just me working. No employees. I can be very flexible with grooming times. The cons of being mobile: Can’t

cater for everyone as not everyone has parking outside their property and a power supply available for me to plug my cable into. Can’t fit as many dogs in as a salon as I have to travel to each customer. Less financial gain than in a salon, as more staff and more dogs can be groomed. But overall, I am glad I went mobile as it suits me perfectly.” Lucy Tallant

Grooming from your own home Home-based business: Pet grooming is very flexible. For example, you can start with a home-based business, working from your garage or spare room. That means lower costs – so it can be a great way to start. Advantages –Very low overheads, you won’t need to leave your own home. Disadvantages –Clients coming to your home out of working hours. Dogs marking on your premises. Planning permission is required with your local council as this option could disturb your neighbours. Whichever route you take – you still have a legal and moral obligation to be competent in the service you offer, to be insured and to declare your income to your local tax office. Keep inspired, motivated, informed and be happy! Heidi Anderton LCGI ICMG www.absolutelyanimals.biz

Their range has been developed in working salons over the last 25 years, to ensure they’re some of the best professional products available. At the cutting edge… Some top groomers review their favourite scissors

Aesculap scissors:”... cut well, were comfortable to use and gave a nice finish.”

Sue Oliver reviews Aesculap’s scissors: When I was asked to try the new Aesculap scissors I admit I was a little hesitant, as like most dog groomers I was already settled and content with my own scissors. I arranged to try the scissors in the salon at Derby College on a range of coat types. I was really surprised at how smooth they felt and really liked the thinners and how effective they were. I thought the curved scissors looked a little too curvy, but when I used them I was amazed and found them to be a great device for shaping style into the coats. 30 | Total Grooming Magazine

The comfort of the scissors was another aspect that I liked; they are fairly lightweight and gave ease of use. I found the scissors to be of high quality and well balanced. There was no strain on the hand and they were comfortable to use. They cut really effectively and gave a nice finish on a range of coat types. I really enjoyed scissoring poodles with them and appreciated the quality of them. I believe these scissors are a great example of high quality, with obvious manufacturer expertise. I found them great to use particularly on scissored breeds.

Louisa Tandy reviews the Mastercut Pro convex Simpsons Mastercut range is my choice of shear in the salon. I have used these every day for several years and love them. There is either the Pro convex range which is a good all round quality scissor ideal for those who want to progress from their budget/training scissors to a decent pair without costing the earth or there is the Iconic range which is for the groomer wanting a bit more from their scissors. The Pro Convex range are Japanese scissors. They have a convex edge

which means it is shaper than a bevel edge and leaves a much crisper finish. The Bevel edge grips the hair as it cuts which makes it better for thicker heavier coats. You can adjust the tension with the tenion screw which allows for them to better fit your style of scissoring. The difference between these and budget scissors is the quality and longevity of them. Cheaper scissors do not hold their edge or sharpen particularly well. The Pro Convex include Straights (plus a left handed scissor), curved, small detailing scissors and blenders. The straights start at 5.5 inches good for feet, edging ears etc moving up to 8 inches which are the most popular length of scissor. The curved make any scissor collection complete. Especially handy for putting in angulation, scissoring round heads or topknots or rounding off feet. The blenders come in 30 tooth which are perfect for giving texture to drop coats and scissored heads or for bulk thinning and shaping. The 50 tooth are a good all round blender good for thinning out shaping and blending in clipper lines and leaving a neater finish than the 30th blenders. The 80 tooth leave a much tighter finish, better for softer coats and leaving a neater finish. Not so good on the thicker coats but excellent on drop

coats. The Iconic range is a “faster” scissor. They can take off a lot of coat without you realising it. I find them lighter to use, not so much in weight but in style. They are a good finishing scissor

and come in a slightly longer style which makes short work of scissoring larger breeds. Some degree of control is required for these but they will certainly make a difference to your work and speed.

Employers’ liability insurance – what is it and do you need it?

A

ll employers are responsible for the health, safety and wellbeing of their employees and if an employee is injured whilst at work they can look to their employer for compensation? The Employers’ Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969 was created to give employees protection and access to compensation should an incident occur at work and a claim for compensation arise. Employers’ Liability insurance is compulsory for ANY employer, and they must display a valid Employers’ Liability Certificate where their employees can see it.

Many people wrongly assume that if their employee is self-employed and pays their own tax, or is an unpaid volunteer, that Employers’ Liability cover is not required. This is not the case. What is important is the nature of the relationship and degree of control between the parties i.e. a master/servant relationship exists. The Health and Safety Executive enforce the law regarding Employers’ Liability, and employers can be fined up to £2,500 for each day without adequate insurance. Although an employer may be exempt from the requirement to hold Employers’ Liability insurance if they

only employ close family members, it is worth considering that even though they may not want to, a family member working for you may be forced into suing you if they suffer a life-changing injury at work and require expensive long term care.

Paws for thought... In this issue Debby Knight LCGI of The Bristles Dog Grooming and Training Centre - an Assessment Centre for Summit Training Group – visits Marie Burns of Top Trimz Training school, Consett, County Durham and finds out more about her passion for grooming and showing: The beginning Marie explains how it all started: My story starts way back in 1991 when I purchased my first West Highland White Terriers with the intention of starting to show. My main focus in these early days was to learn how to hand strip and present my dogs for the show ring and it never even entered my head to be a dog groomer. I showed my dogs for a few years and learnt how best to present them for showing. I also learnt from fellow exhibitors how to clip and scissor a Westie, which came in very useful for the dogs that had now retired and I kept solely as pets. I had built a little grooming room in part of my garage at home which was used only for preparing my own dogs. Around 1997 a couple of people who had purchased a puppy from me asked if I would groom their dogs and I agreed. It wasn’t long before word got out and neighbours, friends and family would ask me to groom their Westies. Westies were a very popular dog in those days. I only groomed them for a couple of years as I still had a full time job and only did it in my spare time. Although I had no formal training everyone was very pleased with their grooms and they started asking if I could groom their relatives’ dogs which were a variety of different breeds. So off to the library I went gathering as many dog grooming books I could lay my hands on. The people I knew who were dog groomers had learned their skill from working in a salon alongside an experienced groomer. I was fortunate in some ways that I 34 | Total Grooming Magazine

attended dog shows and could see a variety of different breeds groomed to a high standard and was able to ask their handlers for tips. For a few years I continued as I was, grooming a few dogs on my days off or at the weekends, and not for great financial gain but just because I enjoyed it and loved dogs. Around 2003 I changed jobs and was now working part time which meant I now had the time to start taking on more dogs and build my grooming business, so I applied for planning permission for my grooming salon at home which was granted and I registered my company under the name Top Trimz. I had heard about a local training school and decided to enrol on a short course, I wanted someone to assess my grooming and see if I was doing it correctly. Obviously I found out there were areas I needed to brush up on and I was very keen to listen and learn.

My main street salon & qualifications My part time business went from strength to strength and in 2008 I decided to open a main street salon but before doing so I wanted to complete the City & Guilds level 3 advance dog grooming qualification. I did this primarily to test my skills set and ensure I would be offering a good service to the public. In 2009 I opened my main street salon, not content with just the level 3 qualification I wanted to challenge myself more and went on to complete the British dog groomers higher diploma. For this I knew I needed more training and wanted to attend the best place possible for further training. My choice of school for this was Look North training school in Keighley with Zoe Duffy. Zoe was very passionate about grooming and is not only a good groomer herself she was also an excellent teacher. In 2013 with Zoe’s help, I completed my higher diploma. I also want to mention Joanne Botwood

& Jitka Krizova with whom I also attended training days.

My training school In 2011 My sister in-law, Catherine asked me to teach her to be a dog groomer. I had been in charge of training in a previous job and really enjoyed it, so decided to give it a go. She worked alongside me for a few months and quickly became very competent so we decided she should enrol for her exams. She completed the Level 3 Diploma within 12 months of starting her training with me. Around the same time two other friends asked if I would train them. So, I put a scheme of work together and organised how these lessons would run and within a few months they too were producing quality grooms. I really enjoyed training these girls and watching them develop into skilled dog groomers really gave me a buzz. I then decided this was a path I wanted to explore and

after returning to college to complete my Teacher Training and Assessors qualifications. I opened as a training school in 2013. The school took off immediately and most of my students even today are from recommendations of past students. I now have a job I truly love, one I never planned for but wouldn’t change for anything. The success of my business is obviously down to hard work and dedication but also down to the fantastic centre I work under ‘Summit Groomers Group’ who have guided me every step of the way. Dog Shows My success as a breeder/exhibitor has also gone from strength to strength. Winning the ultimate prize, Best In Show at CRUFTS in 2016 with my home bred Westie Champion Burneze geordie Girl. Dogs have and will always be a big part of my life, in fact they are my life and I wouldn’t change a single thing.

The pros and cons of going mobile

As with everything where there is a choice, there is no right or wrong answer – going mobile is down to what suits the individual but what are the cost implications:

G

oing mobile involves the least initial outlay and keeps your financial commitments to a minimum. A liveried van helps with exposure as everywhere you drive, your van advertises your business. That’s why your liveried brand identity is so important – make sure your van promotes your business in the right way and reflects what you offer. However, fixed premises can give you a great opportunity for free permanent advertising: not only do you have a shop-front to promote yourself through, but you also may be able to put out A boards and all sorts of other signs to grab peoples’ attention. Premises also give you a chance to offer an ‘experience,’ both to your customer and to their pampered pooch; something that’s harder to achieve if you turn up at their house. Premises also give you a chance to separate home and work, and they provide you with storage space. If you do decide to work from some premises, be very careful in taking on any lease. Remember that you are promising to pay the rent for the lease term – come rain or shine, good trade or bad; if things don’t work out as you expect, your landlord will still expect his or her rent. Equally though, remember that if you only take on a short lease commitment the landlord could be moving you on when you’d rather stay. Setting up a shop is a big investment, and you need time to achieve a payback

38 | Total Grooming Magazine

from that investment. A shop will also tie you: people expect you to be open at least 5 days a week, including a Saturday – and if you can’t meet that sort of commitment then you’ll need to budget for staff. Working mobile gives you far more flexibility as to when you work. Finally, remember to budget for the true travel costs associated with a mobile grooming business: you could find yourself having to buy a replacement vehicle, paying to have it sign-written, etc – all of which mounts up.

So, you decide to go mobile – what are the cost implications? If you’re a self-employed mobile groomer, one of the ‘big issues’ is motoring costs.

As a sole trader or a partnership so long as your annual sales are below the VAT registration threshold (currently £85,000) you have a choice: you can choose to claim either the business proportion of your actual vehicle costs, or a mileage rate instead. If your sales are over the threshold, then you have no choice: you claim the business proportion of the vehicle costs. Vehicle costs include fuel, repairs, tyres, insurance, road fund licence, hire purchase or loan interest. Assessing the business proportion means keeping a mileage log; that way you see what percentage of your travel was for business. Mileage rates are 45p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a tax year, falling to 25p per mile thereafter. You can switch between the methods – but only when you change the vehicle.

Dog Wins Bravery Award

Pepper with owner, Lynne Grant

P

epper – an eight year-old Blue Roan Cocker Spaniel bitch from Widnes - has won ChesterGates Veterinary Specialist’s highly acclaimed Pet of the Month title in recognition of her incredible bravery in recovering from a potentially paralysing back injury. Her owner, Lynne Grant, was horrified when she discovered her dog had lost the use of her back leg and her tail. As a nurse, she recognised that she had a spinal problem. She rushed her to her local vet who immediately referred her to ChesterGates Veterinary Specialists in Chester/

40 | Total Grooming Magazine

Lynne commented: “Pepper hadn’t been doing anything strenuous, she just suddenly collapsed and was unable to put any weight on her back legs. ChesterGates fitted us in straight away and scanned her. It turned out that she had 90 per cent compression of the spinal cord over two vertebrae due to a ruptured disc.” ChesterGates Veterinary Surgeon, Anna Tauro said: “Pepper’s spinal cord compression is very severe and only surgical intervention can give her a chance to recover; however, her neurological deficits are so severe that a complete recovery is uncertain”.

The team immediately operated on Pepper and within 3 days she was home, walking once again. Lynne commented: “Pepper is a wonderful, affectionate companion and has made a remarkable recovery. The team at ChesterGates were all very reassuring and supportive. I was very impressed with the treatment she received.” ChesterGates’ awarded their Pet of the Month title to Pepper in recognition of her bravery and in keeping a happy, positive disposition in the face of such adversity.

Pets Suffer When Love Breaks Down

Irina Wells of ExoticDirect pet insurance looks at who gets the pet after a relationship break-up:

D

o you think you’d let your boyfriend or girlfriend visit the shared pet if you broke up? If you said yes, then you agreed with 78% of exotic pet owners who were asked how they’d respond in one such hypothetical situation. It turns out, however, that when the breakup is not hypothetical but very real, responses change dramatically. When posed to former partners, that same question garnered only 21% of yeses. The two questions were asked by ExoticDirect as part of two separate surveys totalling 500 people. The aim was to understand how couples handle pet ownership in a break up. And when pinned up against one another, the two surveys suggest that most couples underestimate the effect that a breakup would have on them,

42 | Total Grooming Magazine

overestimate how polite the breakup would be and fail to account for the possibility of their partner having different preferences to theirs. Sadly, this often leads to one person’s relationship with the pet disintegrating or becoming severed all together. Which raises the question, is getting a petwith a partner a good idea at all? 10% of pets acquired during a relationship have to be re-homed It is true that shared pet ownership can be a good precursor to becoming parents and can even solidify your relationship. In fact, according to one US study in 2013, having a pet together turned out to be a better indicator of whether a couple stayed together than having a baby together. This is because having a baby can often be considered a “constrained commitment”, which is characterised by a moral sense of obligation, while a

petindicates a “dedicated commitment” , which is a hallmark of stable romantic partnerships – where both partners have no other reasons to be with each other than because they want to. However, for the couples that don’t work out, in addition to all other complicated decisions that need to be made when separating, they are also faced with the matter of who gets to keep the pet. And while one of the main factors that couples consider is who bought the pet, according to our surveys, 59% of couples get their shared pets while living together. In addition to a shared income, which many long-term co-inhabiting partners have, this could make determining the “rightful” owner a quarrelsome matter. And if a decision can’t be reached, the pet might have to be rehomed as 10% of owners in our survey said they have done or would do after a breakup.

The good news is that for couples who part on good terms sharing a pet might be possible. In fact, that’s exactly what 7% of our survey respondents reported they did after they broke up with their partner. Caution is advised, however. Some pets, like rabbits for example, would not fare well when split between two homes and others like snakes and lizards, who require a carefully regulated environment to thrive, need bulky items like vivariums and all the associated equipment. These would be very tricky to transport without significant disruptions to their habitat. 34% of partners do not let their ex visit the pet Many pets need a stable living environment in order to thrive, which means that letting the pet live with one owner, and allowing the ex partner to 44 | Total Grooming Magazine

visit, might be the best thing to do. This can reduce emotional pain felt by both the pet and the ex partner. But judging by the 34% of owners that reported that they do not let their ex visit the pet, and the 45% that said their ex doesn’t want to visit the pet, that might be easier said than done. More often than not if an ex doesn’t get to see the pet it is because the relationship didn’t end well. In those scenarios the relationship has usually disintegrated to such a degree that at least one, if not both, former partners do not want to see each other. More trivial reasons are one partner has moved too far or is simply not interested in the pet. But either way, the reality of breaking up and deciding who gets the pet proves to be very different to the expectations people have, which

means you might have to give the idea of getting a pet together some extra thought before you do. Not only might it make a breakup messier, but it could even keep you in an unhappy relationship for longer as a 2017 study reported. So, should you get a pet together and if so is there a right time? There’s no definitive answer and as much as we like to think we know how we’d react, until it actually happens, we never really do. A break up involving a pet, whether 2 months into ownership or several years, is very individual.v ExoticDirect offer pet insurance for large and small birds, lizards, tortoises, small and exotic mammals and birds of prey. A Gift of Life

F

ew pet owners realise that behind the scenes, donor pets are a vital component in making an incredible gift of life to help other animals in need. Now, the owners of deceased pets are able to bequeath their pet’s body to an organisation to harvest tissue and bone that is then used to repair injuries in needy pets. Veterinary Tissue Bank is the UK’s first ethical animal donor programme. It was established ten years ago by veterinary surgeons, John Innes, former professor of surgery at University of Liverpool Veterinary School now referrals director for CVS Vets based at ChesterGates Referrals Specialists and Dr Peter Myint, who has also extensive experience managing and developing tissue banks for human procedures. Since its formation, over 9,000 procedures have been conducted using donor materials.

it can give owners comfort to know that their loss will benefit other pets in need. We are encouraging pet owners to register their pets as donors in advance and carry a pet donor card. This makes it easier to have the difficult conversation when the pet passes away.”

Donors needed

Recipient Case:

Mirroring the same principles and many of the supply problems as human tissue donation, the tissue bank has an urgent need for more pet donors. Dr Peter Myint from Veterinary Tissue Bank, commented: “We appreciate that it is a ‘difficult’ subject when the pet passes away but often

Clodagh Tanner, noticed that Dusty was struggling to walk and immediately took her to their vet. To complicate matters, she had already had the other forelimb amputated when she was a puppy. It turned out that Dusty was suffering from a condition known as Humeral Intracondylar Fissure (HIF), also known as Incomplete Ossification of the Humeral Condyle (IOHC), where the bone easily breaks at the elbow. Springer Spaniels are particularly predisposed to this condition. Dusty was referred to ChesterGates Veterinary Specialists in Chester, where orthopaedic specialist, Ben Walton, performed a CT scan of the leg and diagnosed the condition. Successful stabilisation of the fissure was critical, as Dusty could not live a normal active life without her remaining forelimb, so the orthopaedic team used donor bone, provided by Veterinary Tissue Bank , to encourage healing. This was used in conjunction with the Humeral Intracondylar Repair System (HIRS) – an implant designed by Ben Walton and John Innes specifically to treat HIF - and a Lateral Epicondylar Anatomic Plate (LEAP), a 3d-printed, titanium alloy, bone plate, designed by Fusion Implants to fit the shape of the bone in spaniels.

The surgery worked well for Dusty and within a few days she returned home. Owner, Rob, commented: “I was amazed to see her walk out of the surgery. It was unbelievable. The swelling went down quickly and, although she limped a little initially, she started using the leg immediately and you wouldn’t now know that there had ever been a problem. “It is of course, still early days and Dusty is only having short walks but we are so pleased with the progress she has made. “We are grateful to the owner of the donor pet for thinking of other pets in need at such a difficult, traumatic time.”

Donor Case: Larry the Lurcher has become a donor dog and has helped improve the lives of 83 other dogs When Larry, a 15 year-old Irish Lurcher from Taunton, began to fail, his owner, Marion Davis, engaged in some careful consideration about how to manage his final days and his ultimate passing. As an organ donor herself, Marion recognised the important role donors play in the field of human surgery and embarked on a search for the animal equivalent. She was surprised and delighted to discover there was a donor scheme for pets operated by Veterinary Tissue Bank. She commented: “I was realistic about Larry’s ageing process and knew that he wasn’t going to be with me for much longer. “I loved him dearly, but also felt that when he died it was important to go on to help someone else – whether that is another human, in our case, or another animal in their case. “I spoke to my veterinary surgeon at Priory Close Surgery about the scheme and they signed us up and were well informed about how it worked. “It’s hard when your loved pet is dying to think about how this loss might help other animals, but in some cases the knowledge that a beloved pet’s departure has actually been able to help other pets find a new lease of 48 | Total Grooming Magazine

life can make the grief more bearable and that was certainly the case for me when Larry had to be put to sleep a few weeks after I had signed him up.” In Larry’s case, his tissues went on to help 83 other dogs in need of surgery and after the donation process concluded, Marion received an oak casket which contained his remaining ashes. “Peter Myint from Veterinary Tissue Bank said: “We are very grateful to Marion for thinking of helping other dogs in need and for her generous donation.”

• Pet owners sign on the donor register. • Donor pets need a full vaccination record and need to be free of infectious diseases. • Tissue bank contacts their vet to ask the practice to note the pet’s donor status on their medical record and owners then carry a pet donor card. • When the pet dies, the owners decide if they are still agreeable to donation and if they are, the vet contacts the tissue bank and arranges collection. • Once bone and tissue has been retrieved the pet is cremated and the ashes are returned to the owner if requested. • There is no cost to the pet owner. • For more information on becoming a donor contact Veterinary Tissue Bank on 01691 778769 or visit the website at www.vtbank.org

The Dog Catcher of Beverley Hills

Doris Day, Hollywood legend and the only woman to hit No. 1 at the box office and No. 1 on the music charts simultaneously, died on May 13, 2019 at her Carmel Valley, Californian home. She was 97. Doris may have departed, but her legacy to unwanted and abandoned pets lives on.

A

ffectionately known as the Dog Catcher of Beverley Hills after personally rescuing unwanted dogs from the streets, one star was famously quoted as saying: “We all had at least one of those Doris Day animals. If you would see Doris on the street or in the studio, chances are you would end up with some homeless dog or cat Doris was sponsoring. She carried around photos of the animals who needed homes, and then she’d actually come over to inspect your house to make sure you were up to it.” The Doris Day Animal Foundation (DDAF) of today is a national, not-forprofit charity founded in 1978 as the Doris Day Pet Foundation by Doris Day, with a straightforward mission that continues to this day: to help animals and the people who love them. As a grant-giving charity, DDAF funds other animal rescue organisations across the United States that directly care for and protect animals. When she initially founded what was then the Doris Day Pet Foundation (DDPF), Doris focused on finding homes for the large number of animals that were being destroyed simply because there weren’t enough good homes. Her grassroots efforts resulted in Doris personally rescuing hundreds of animals over the years. In addition to fostering animals at her own home, Doris and DDPF were leasing kennel space, providing veterinary care, and finding loving, forever homes for the

increasing numbers of homeless pets with the help of a dedicated staff of volunteers.

Despite the large number of animals that Doris and DDPF were rescuing, Doris knew it wasn’t enough, and

that addressing the root cause of the homeless pet overpopulation through spay/neuter was the key. To complement the Doris Day Pet Foundation, she formed the Doris Day Animal League in 1987, a national nonprofit citizens’ lobbying organisation, whose overriding mission is to reduce the pain and suffering of animals through legislative initiatives, education and programmes to develop and enforce regulations to protect animals. In 1995 Doris and DDAL founded Spay Day USA. Now known as World Spay Day and under the auspices of the Humane Society of the United States, this annual event has reached global proportions and helped spay and neuter more than 1.5 million animals in the first 15 years since inception. In 2007, the Doris Day Animal League merged with the Humane Society of the United States for an even greater legislative voice in Washington. In the meantime, the Doris Day Pet Foundation evolved into the Doris Day Animal Foundation, whose efforts have become even more far-reaching. With Doris’ hands-on involvement until her death in 2019, DDAF has become a grant-giving organization, funding other non-profit causes across the country that share DDAF’s mission of helping animals and the people who love them. In addition to assisting numerous organisations with various programmes, such as spay/neuter, veterinary expenses, seniors programmes, pet food pantries, wildlife rehabilitation and educational resources, some of DDAF’s “legacy” project funding includes World Spay Day, the Doris Day Equine Center (located at Cleveland Amory’s Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison, Texas), the Duffy Day Life Saving Programme (giving a second chance to older and injured animals that may otherwise face euthanasia). The Duffy Day Life Saving Programme was named after one of her rescue dogs – Duffy. Through a veterinarian friend, a beautiful Maltese named Duffy put behind him a life of abuse, neglect and found a home with Doris, who 52 | Total Grooming Magazine

had recently lost her little white dog. Millions of dogs aren’t as lucky as Duffy Day. To spur change, Doris founded the Duffy Day Lifesaving Programme, directed at saving senior animals in need of medication for the rest of their lives. Once Doris left the limelight of Hollywood, she enjoyed a quiet life at home in the Carmel Valley, California. Here, she took over the co-ownership of the Cypress Inn in Carmel by the Sea alongside Dennis LeVett. Together they established Carmel’s original pet-friendly boutique hotel, welcoming pets of all shapes and sizes. Thanks to Doris, Carmel has become known as the dog-friendly capital of

the world, and her influence has had a global domino effect. When Doris first started travelling to Carmel regularly with her dogs in the late 70’s, she couldn’t find any hotels that allowed pets. She entered into partnership on her now world-renowned Cypress Inn, only on the condition that pets not only be welcomed in the hotel, but pampered as much as the human guests. Soon other hotels, restaurants and places of business followed suit. Even though her work was mostly in the States, her animal welfare advocacy has had an enormous influence around the world. The Cypress Inn has gone on to welcome everyone from kings and queens to Hollywood royalty to the

everyday traveller, but especially those who like to travel with their pet. A regular visitor to the Cypress Inn who is also a volunteer for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) had met with Doris during a fundraiser and commented on her commitment and down-to-earth approach: “Doris was really humble and always had time to speak to us volunteers. Her love of animals was instantly apparent and her dedication to their cause was an overriding passion in her life.” In the 30 years since she left the limelight, Doris has focused her energies on the Doris Day Animal Foundation and the Doris Day Animal League. Doris’ wishes were that she have no funeral or memorial service and no grave marker. Friends and fans wishing to remember Doris Day, are encouraged to visit www.dorisdayanimalfoundation.org.

About Doris Day:

S

he was born Doris Mary Ann Von Kappelhoff, April 3, 1922 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She pursued a passionate interest in dance, winning a number of competitions as a girl. After a serious injury in a car-versus-train collision, a fractured leg that took many months to heal, Day turned her interests to singing. Her mother arranged private lessons to distract her convalescing daughter, and vocal coach Grace Raine saw such a spark of talent in young Doris that she offered lessons at two for the price of one. Day began her professional singing career at the tender age of 15, working with local band leader Barney Rapp, who suggested she change her surname to “Day.” Her star rose quickly, and she caught the eye of band leader Les Brown. Day played with Brown for two stints, marrying trombonist Al Jordan, giving birth to her son Terry in 1942, and divorcing in the interim. Day’s first hit with

54 | Total Grooming Magazine

Brown’s band, “Sentimental Journey,” captured the national mood of the day, as World War II veterans returned home. Time would show “Sentimental Journey” – along with her signature “Que Sera Sera” – to be Day’s biggest hits. Movie-wise, Day took the box office by storm, appearing in romances, comedies, dramas and bio-pics – from the fun and frivolous “Pillow Talk” to the dark “Storm Warning” and the dramatic “Love Me or Leave Me.” During her three decades of work in film, Day starred in nearly every genre, not just as a singer/dancer but as an actress with superb comic timing, a natural talent for interpreting a role and a gift for evoking emotion. She worked with many of Hollywood’s greatest leading men – Rock Hudson, Clark Gable, Jack Lemon, James Garner, Frank Sinatra, and Cary Grant – many of whom became lifelong friends. Her 39 films – many still incredibly popular and shown

frequently today - stand as a testament to her talent. While Day was honoured with many awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004 and a Grammy for Lifetime Achievement in 2008, she never won an Oscar. Day’s third marriage, to her agent, Marty Melcher, in 1951, was tumultuous. His sudden death in 1968 ultimately revealed he and a business partner had squandered Day’s earnings, leaving her nearly bankrupt. Reluctantly, Day entered the world of television, honouring a TV contract for “The Doris Day Show” (1968-1973) that Melcher had signed on to without Day’s knowledge. A consummate professional, Day set her personal troubles aside, and went on to win a Golden Globe for the series, and to produce two television specials before retiring from Hollywood entirely and focussing instead on her animal rescue work.

Grooming Van of the Year

The Portable Palace Created from our Revolutionary insulated panel, the Palace provides groomers with unrivalled benefits never seen before in the industry! This amazing new concept was born due to our lining's incredible lifespan - they often out live the vans they were placed in - so we created a demountable pod where your business can be moved on to the next chassis easily when needed - or if you no longer wish to be mobile, you can demount the pod and work from your garden!

• • • • • • • •

As the chassis ages, the Palace can be removed and placed onto a brand new chassis - resulting in a much cheaper cost than having to buy a whole new van and conversion with next to no downtime If the chassis is involved in an accident or breaks down you can simply remove the body, place it on the ground and work from your driveway whilst you wait for it to be repaired. The lining will not out live the vehicle like so often seen with used van conversions. You then have to sell the van & conversion and then buy a new van and conversion and wait whilst it is converted. Whereas with the Palace, you can keep the pod forever and change the chassis as you need to. Once you choose to retire from mobile grooming you can remove the Palace, sell the chassis and work from the Palace in your garden instead of having to buy a parlour or convert a room in your house. When you choose to move home, you can take the pod with you and this portability combined with the size means they will not normally require planning permission in your garden. You never need to buy a Brand new chassis that can depreciate - simply buy used a chassis and then swap them out as they get too old. Smaller than its LWB Van equivalent but provides a more workable space inside that is highly customisable as there are no van strutts or vehicle constraints Can be driven on a normal car driving license Say goodbye to having to buy a whole new van and conversion every few years - simply move your Palace from one chassis to another with zero down time and when the time comes and you no longer want to be mobile, simply

Keep Cool Nick Jones, Pet Behaviourist Examines the Reality of Summer Heat on Dogs

S

ummer is well and truly with us, and as I write we are experiencing a mini heat wave in the UK. It’s even dry during Wimbledon. My old girl Amber used to know the phrase ‘In the shade’, and she would go to a cool spot and stay there when hot (quite sensible I thought!). Little Pip the Border terrier, however, knows nothing of common sense and will stay in the intense sun until she is near to meltdown. As a result, I keep her in the shade or in a well-ventilated cool room. Free access to water is, of course, essential for both man and dog in this weather so do be sure to keep the dog well watered. Just plain clean tap water is sufficient. Dogs are lactose intolerant, so no milk and so on. If it’s too hot for you to walk barefoot on the pavement (for example) then it’ll be too hot for your dog too! Avoid

exercising your dog at peak sun hours and go for early morning or late evening walks. Take a water bottle and possibly a collapsible water bowl too for regular water stops. Be on the alert for heat stroke. I have seen the opposite whereby my ol’ girl Amber once went into hypothermia when walking in the freezing rain on a Lake District peak with me. She should have had a Gore-Tex kit like I did ;) Hyperthermia is the excess of heat build-up and equally as dangerous for a dog. Early signs of this might include rapid breathing, heavy panting, and salivation. Also fatigue tremors, and staggering. If you see this and feel concerned, get the dog into shade naturally and apply wet towels if possible. Offer small amounts of water and call your vet (always carry that number with you). At worse I would be prepared to dial 999, or 118247

in the UK and they can put you through to the nearest vet if you’re away from home. Did you know that for your own safety you can insert an entry in your mobile phone under ICE-name (In Case of Emergency) and then the number you’d like the emergency services to call if you’re out of action or involved in an accident? Watch out for sunburn! Pale or white dogs and those with very short coat can suffer on the nose and back. I have often placed a dob of lotion of my dog’s nose and rubbed it in past the licking point! Sprays or aerosols are good along the back too if the coat is short enough for the sun to hit the skin on the back. On the beach all day? Dig down to a cool level or provide a small pop up tent! Certain breeds may be more susceptible to the heat too. Such breeds would include the boxer, bulldogs, pugs, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus and so on. These breeds have a job breathing at the best of times, so be careful in the extra heat. Dogs with heavy coats such as the Old English and so on should be clipped out nicely to allow a cooler summer. I love the idea of a longhaired Shepherd for myself, but these dense coats put me off thinking about how to keep the dog cool at times. 60 | Total Grooming Magazine

I would (funds allowing) consider an air-conditioned environment for such a thick-coated dog. Dogs that carry an excess of weight can feel the heat too, so be kind and keep your dog trim :) Dogs in cars. You would be shocked how quickly the temperature rises when a car is parked up (even with the windows down a little). This is just a bad idea full stop. Don’t do it. The dog should only be in the car when with you, and with the air con on. I often place the car in the shade at home prior to going out with the dog, and leave it running air con on full blast to get a nice starting temperature. I admit that I obsess a little about keeping things cool or warm accordingly, but remember your dog can’t talk, so it pays to go the extra mile. Imagine what it must be like with a coat on too. Going back to the car situation, I did an exercise for my local radio station a couple of years back as it was an article surrounding leaving dogs in cars in connection to a local game fayre. Thankfully I keep the notes in a file (quicker to find than on my PC!) and here are the notes I made whilst in the car: I started with the car in direct sunlight with the air conditioning on

to begin with. I wore shorts and a t-shirt. To begin with the temperature in the car was 25 Celsius. I had a small thermometer with me to keep a record. I then wound the windows up and the engine was turned off. Within four minutes the temp had raised to 33 degrees Celsius! It was already feeling very warm and ‘like an oven’ quoting my notes. Another six minutes on and the temperature had hit 37 degrees (99 Far.) I was at that time running with sweat. After a full 15 minutes, the car was 40 degrees Celsius inside (105 Far.) and I was gasping...I had to get out of the car. Imagine Fido that maybe be already warmed up after a dog walk/run and you then repeat this by dropping into Tesco on the way home. Please be careful!! Dogs regularly die this way. Otherwise, enjoy the summer folks with some walks focused on clean streams and edges of rivers. Remember to keep well hydrated yourself and enjoy the moment.
