News and Product Round-up New Tasty Natural Snacks
A
n online retailer has launched a tasty new range of meaty snacks to help improve dogs’ overall health and behaviour. Raw dog food specialists BellaAndDuke.com have revealed 11 premium meaty treats for UK pets to munch on, from beef hearts to rabbit ears with hair.
Bella and Duke New Treats Range Chicken hearts and rabbit ears with hair are part of a tasty new range of meat snacks for dogs that have recently been launched by an online dog food retailer. Raw dog food specialists BellaAndDuke.com have revealed 11 premium meaty treats for UK pets to munch on, including duck fillets and beef neck tendons. Moving away from artificial, dried snacks to natural, raw treats will improve dogs’ overall health and even their behaviour, according to the experts. So, preservatives, fillers and grains are nowhere to be found in these natural products which can be added on to any subscription order. The £9.90 Rabbit ears are easy to digest and contain 100% natural cartilage, helping to strengthen dogs’ chewing muscles and clean their teeth naturally, whilst the hair acts as a natural internal cleaner, brushing the intestinal wall as it passes through a dog’s system. New training treats have also been made available, including a bag of seven raw and additive free duck fillets for £6.30. The shape can easily be broken into smaller pieces or served whole, to practice recall. Dried chicken hearts are another super healthy and tasty canine snack, containing around 5000mg/kg of taurine, whilst 200 mini training bones 4 | www.christiesdirect.com
Beef mini training bones
are available in beef, chicken or duck for £6.30. The revolutionary range also includes beef neck tendons, containing plenty of collagen proteins to aid smooth skin and coat structure, as well as being an ideal treat for overweight or unfit dogs thanks to their sugar free content. A spokesperson for BellaAndDuke. com said: “Raw, natural meals are much better for dogs than dried food or kibble and this should extend to snacks too. “A few small, dry bones or a handful of biscuits isn’t a treat for your pet – it’s a missed opportunity to improve a dog’s health and behaviour. “Rabbit ears might turn a few sensitive human stomachs, but dogs absolutely love them because they’re tough enough to give them something to properly sink their teeth into, yet still so easy to digest. “They’re great for cleaning both dogs teeth and insides too, whilst the high levels of taurine in Chicken hearts will help keep UK pets fit and healthy.”

new lines, Group55’s Sales Director for Pet Care, Martin Breen commented; “We are delighted to launch these exciting new products, which further enhance our already hugely successful Animology product range. Most dog fragrance sprays contain alcohol, some in significant volumes that can be harmful to the hair and skin of a dog. We have responded to the demand from our customer base for a
fragrance spray by developing a completely new set of formulations that deliver great fragrance levels and linger but most particularly with the health of the dog as our primary focus. These Animology body mists look and smell amazing, and as a brand that is synonymous with keeping dogs looking and smelling at their best, they are a perfect fit for our product range.”

Battersea Urges People Not To Abandon Kittens as Another Litter is Found in a Box
T
hree defenceless kittens found abandoned in a cardboard box are on the road to recovery at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home’s Old Windsor centre. The tiny brood were only a week old when they were found last month and would have died within hours had they not been found and rescued. Despite their ordeal, the three kittens are in good health and are being fostered by Battersea staff. They have been named Emily, Charlotte and Anne. At just five weeks old, they happily already have homes lined up. Sadly, the trio’s story is not an isolated incident, Battersea Old Windsor regularly sees similar cases. The past few months have been particularly busy with three boxes of kittens being found and brought into the Berkshire centre. Just last month, Mushroom, a tiny black kitten estimated to be around three months old, was left outside a block of flats in a cardboard box. He was found by a member of the public, who brought him straight to Battersea Old Windsor. Luckily, Mushroom was in good health and the cheeky little cat quickly found a new home. The month before, in March, two young cats and a nine-month-old kitten were found in a box left by a river in the village of Hurst, Berkshire. The trio, named Peanut, Butter and Jelly by Battersea staff, were distressed but healthy, and have since found new homes. Georgia Randall, Cattery Team Leader at Battersea Old Windsor, said: “All these cats were luckily found in time and brought to safety, but it goes without saying that leaving helpless animals outside in a cardboard box is a huge risk to their welfare. The frequency with which we see cats being abandoned outside in boxes is deeply concerning. We understand that people are often in difficult situations, but we want to stress that abandoning them is

not the only option. “Battersea’s doors are always open to anyone who has cats or kittens that they can no longer take care of and our staff are not judgmental when it comes to dealing with owners, no matter what their reasons for bringing an animal in.” You can contact Battersea Old Windsor’s cattery team on 01784 494 462.

New pup? Blue Cross experts help owners through the first year
N
ational pet charity Blue Cross, a leader in pet advice, has produced ‘Puppy Knowhow’, an essential tool for owners or prospective owners of new puppies. The free subscription service offers in-depth, vet-approved puppy advice and training tips based on the age of the dog up to one-year-old. Advice is emailed directly to the owner every month, to guide owners throughout the first year of their beloved new pal’s journey. The first year of puppyhood can be challenging, especially for those who have not owned a dog before. Through the new monthly email service Blue Cross behaviour and veterinary experts will offer advice, training tips and guidance to help the puppy’s growth into adulthood as stress free and fun as possible for both puppy and owner. A spokesperson at Blue Cross, said: “We know getting a new puppy can sometimes be hard work and we see 10 | www.christiesdirect.com
many being given up for rehoming under a year old. It helps when there is someone there to shine a light on what your new puppy needs depending on their age. Blue Cross is proud to offer its wealth of experience in animal welfare to owners and help them through this journey, making sure both puppy and owner have an enjoyable and enriched first year.” The first year of a puppy’s life is very important in moulding the type of dog they’ll be in adulthood. Learning good, polite behaviours through early positive-reinforcement training, as well as reducing fear of new situations in the first few months can help develop a puppy into a very happy, well-behaved and well-rounded adult. The subscription works by owners entering the details of their dog via the Blue Cross webpage including the puppy’s age bracket and they then will receive tailored email advice about puppies of that age. Blue Cross aims to
equip owners with information and tips to make sure they have a positive and rewarding relationship with their pups. For more information on Puppy Knowhow and to sign up for your tailored puppy advice visit www. bluecross.org.uk/puppyknowhow
It’s a Pirate’s Life for One-Eyed Dog A one-eyed and blind French Bulldog cross named Pirate is about to start an adventurous life after finding a new family at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.
B
efore coming into the charity’s care, one-year-old Pirate had never left his previous home. Because he was born blind, the young dog’s previous owner assumed he wouldn’t need walking; unlike his namesake, Pirate never knew what it was like to explore the outside world. Rebecca MacIver, Rehoming and Welfare Manager at Battersea says: “Dogs heavily rely on their sense of smell to explore the world around them and even if your dog is blind, their disability shouldn’t hold them back from doing all of the regular things that dogs do.” “When Pirate first arrived, he was quite apprehensive and nervous of the outside world. But, since being in our care he has had his first taste of adventure- he went on his first ever proper walk and was allowed to explore his surroundings in a search for hidden treasures. He has also met lots of people and dogs and now has quite a crew!” Before coming to Battersea, Pirate had also never been seen by a vet and needed multiple veterinary treatments. These included basic vaccinations as well as more intricate eye removal surgery. Thankfully it wasn’t long before Pirate found a new home with Christine and her husband Jack. Christine works in Recruitment at Battersea, and first fell in love with Pirate when she spotted him in kennels. Christine said: “The first time I saw Pirate his head perked up and his

right ear flopped down and I thought he was just the sweetest looking little boy. When they told me he was blind, I felt like my heart was going to burst! I made up my mind quite quickly that I
wanted to take him home.” The couple are teaching Pirate spoken commands to help him navigate the outside world, which will help him gain more confidence while out

exploring. Christine continues: “Pirate has been on quite a few walks since being with us. He was extremely nervous of even walking out the front door the first time we took him out. Now he’s gaining more confidence and walking beside or ahead of us rather than nervously behind us. He’s even mastering ‘step up’ and ‘step down’
when there’s stairs or changes in pavement.” “He is such a lovely addition to our family, we’re absolutely in love with him and we wouldn’t have him any other way.” Rebecca MacIver continues: “Pirate is the perfect example of why people should consider adopting an animal
with a disability. Despite being blind and not previously having any experience of the outside world, he’s taken everything in his stride and can now live the fulfilled and exciting life that he deserves.” If you’d like to give a Battersea dog a home, please visit www.battersea.org. uk.
Battersea’s top tips for caring for a blind dog: 1. Give your dog a safe zone - It’s important to establish an area that’s comfortable and safe, which will act as a retreat for your blind pet. A large soft-padded bed is helpful to keep them comfortable. 2. Introduce new commands to increase safety - Teach your dog important words like “step up,” “step down,” “left,” “right,” “danger” or “stop” to help them navigate the inside and outside world in the safest way possible. 3. Talk to your dog frequently Your dog is already one of your most trusted friends, so having regular conversations with your
14 | Total Grooming Magazine
blind dog will be even more important. The sound of your voice can help them figure out where you are. Always talk to your dog to get their attention before touching them so you don’t scare or startle them. 4. Dog-proof your home - Get down on all fours and crawl around your home looking for hazards, such as things they could dangerously bump into or fall from. Put corner protectors on sharp furniture and baby gates at the tops of stairs until your dog can safely manoeuvre staircases. 5. Use scents during activities - A dog is a dog, so they can still fetch!
Therefore, you can and should engage in active play with them. Rub a dog treat on a dog toy before throwing it to help your dog find it and choose an open, safe area for them to play in. 6. Create location cues - If your living room has a distinct rug, it could be a cue your blind dog will remember. This will help them understand where in the house they are. 7. Always keep food and water in the same place - Once your dog has learned where their food is, it will be easier for them to return to it — and it will become another location cue.

Protect Yourself against HMRC Scams HMRC Phishing Scams Continue to Rise despite Repeated Warnings
D
espite continued action and warnings, HMRC ‘phishing’ scams continue to rise with criminals using increasingly sophisticated methods to target UK taxpayers. With reports of criminal activity using landlines, emails, text messages and social media to distribute bogus HMRC information, you might be forgiven for not knowing which forms of HMRC contact you can trust. Tax preparation specialist David Redfern, managing director of DSR Tax Claims Ltd, has issued his advice to help taxpayers distinguish between genuine HMRC contact and bogus contact. Bogus refund texts and emails are the most common ‘phishing’ method used, often containing links to fake HMRC websites or malicious software designed to damage your computer or smartphone. Redfern stated “I’m sure most people can recognise how appealing it is when you receive a text or email claiming that you are owed money, often sums over £1000, and it is tempting to click on the link to claim the refund. However, these emails and texts are never genuine. HMRC does not communicate with taxpayers in that method - they usually communicate via letter and any emails from HMRC deliberately don’t contain any links for the very reason that they don’t want taxpayers to get caught out by ‘phishing’ scams. Such links are usually intended to harvest your financial information, such as bank account details or card details. HMRC will never ask you for your card details in order to issue you with a refund. 18 | Total Grooming Magazine
Similarly, never open attachments to emails. The best way to deal with this texts or emails is to report them to HMRC and then delete them”. HMRC recommend that all ‘phishing’ texts and scams are emailed to phishing@hmrc. gsi.gov.uk, even if it is seems like a familiar scam that you have seen before. In a worrying and growing development, criminals are targeting elderly and vulnerable people by phone, usually landline, to inform them that HMRC is taking legal action against them, fraudulently demanding money in order to halt the supposed legal threat. Redfern noted “It is easy to imagine how concerning it must be to answer a call, only to be told completely out of the blue that you are being taken to court and the scam callers know that most people will feel panic and fear and prey upon that sense of horror. If you are faced with one of these calls, my advice would be to take
a deep breath to allow your commonsense time to kick in. The facts are that HMRC does not inform taxpayers of impending legal action in this method. If you are unfortunate enough to have caught the attention of HMRC due to your taxes, it will inform you by letter that they are investigating you and you will be made aware of how long your case is going to be long before it reaches a court or tribunal. While some may feel that HMRC’s insistence on written communication is outdated and unnecessarily unwieldy, it is a strong method of combating fraud”. Taxpayers who find themselves on the receiving end of such a phone call are advised to hang up. If you are able to capture any of the call details, such the number used or the content of the call, HMRC strongly recommends that you report the call to them for further investigation.

Be Impressive! Mark Williamson, Sales and Marketing Director at PHMG, looks at why first impressions count:
P
et grooming businesses only get one shot at making a good first impression, so salons should be making sure that customers and prospects feel warmth towards their brand from the very first point of contact. This means taking into consideration how their business looks both on and off the premises including signage, websites and appointment and loyalty cards. But it also means thinking about how their company sounds. The telephone is still an important communication channel for pet groomers. From enquiring about the cost of a service to asking about opening hours, the traditional method of picking up the phone remains a significant way of getting information about a business. But if the call isn’t handled in a professional manner, it could impact on a company’s bottom line. Recent research amongst 1,000 consumers revealed that 73 per cent of respondents wouldn’t give repeat business to an organisation if their first phone call wasn’t up to scratch. When face-to-face, body language and facial expressions can help portray a friendly, open attitude. Yet over the phone, visual cues aren’t available and a person’s voice becomes the sole tool for communication, making it that bit more difficult to convey positivity. By offering telephone training to staff, it represents the first step in establishing good call handling – but moulding employee behaviour isn’t the only aspect to consider.
Speak to an attentive audience Telephone hold time is inevitable. Most companies aim to deal with a call 22 | Total Grooming Magazine
straight away but there are instances where this just isn’t possible, such as employees being in the middle of a dog shampoo or when information isn’t to hand. In fact, pet grooming businesses have been found to keep callers on hold for an average of 39.44 seconds per call, a golden opportunity to communicate with a prime audience. Repetitive ringing, monotonous beeps, anodyne pan pipes or even confusing silence are some of the most common techniques used by businesses to greet callers on hold, yet these methods are unengaging and frustrating and can leave a lasting negative perception in the caller’s mind. Instead, customers can be treated to brand-audio branding productions that perfectly represent the business and its values and speak directly to an attentive audience. The messages can assist in crossselling and upselling products and services. For example, a customer calling to book a clip and trim, can be sold the pick-up and delivery service,
generating additional revenue for the groomers. Or a customer looking for nail trim could be upsold the VIP bath and blow dry, ear and teeth cleaning package. A credible script can also be used to build consumer trust. By advertising accreditations, highlighting involvement with animal charities or offering advice on topics like how to cut back on pet hair cleaning in the home, it can help to reassure customers that their pets are in capable and caring hands. Specialist services can also be highlighted like services for skin conditions or expertise in handling anxious pets.
Sound as good as you look Pet grooming businesses rely on word of mouth for business success. If customers experience poor call handling, it’s not just their business that is lost but also potential clients that result from their recommendation. Salon owners should look to ensure their business sounds as good as possible.

This amazing new concept was born due to our lining's incredible lifespan - they often out live the vans they were placed in - so we created a demountable pod where your business can be moved on to the next chassis easily when needed - or if you no longer wish to be mobile, you can demount the pod and work from your garden!
• • • • • • • •
As the chassis ages, the Palace can be removed and placed onto a brand new chassis - resulting in a much cheaper cost than having to buy a whole new van and conversion with next to no downtime If the chassis is involved in an accident or breaks down you can simply remove the body, place it on the ground and work from your driveway whilst you wait for it to be repaired. The lining will not out live the vehicle like so often seen with used van conversions. You then have to sell the van & conversion and then buy a new van and conversion and wait whilst it is converted. Whereas with the Palace, you can keep the pod forever and change the chassis as you need to. Once you choose to retire from mobile grooming you can remove the Palace, sell the chassis and work from the Palace in your garden instead of having to buy a parlour or convert a room in your house. When you choose to move home, you can take the pod with you and this portability combined with the size means they will not normally require planning permission in your garden. You never need to buy a Brand new chassis that can depreciate - simply buy used a chassis and then swap them out as they get too old. Smaller than its LWB Van equivalent but provides a more workable space inside that is highly customisable as there are no van strutts or vehicle constraints Can be driven on a normal car driving license Say goodbye to having to buy a whole new van and conversion every few years - simply move your Palace from one chassis to another with zero down time and when the time comes and you no longer want to be mobile, simply

Introducing Cat Grooming Heidi Anderton is principal of Absolutely Animals and London School of Pet Grooming. She is an experienced industry expert and is a founder member of the British Isles Grooming Association (BIGA). Grooming cats for over 30 years, Heidi holds two separate cat grooming qualifications and is based in London. Are you thinking about adding a cat grooming service to your business? I couldn’t get enough groomers to start cat grooming, because there is such a huge call for it. We groom about 12-15 cats per week over a two-day period and all my team love grooming the cats. I think we will soon be increasing this to three days. The cats are groomed in a separate room from the dogs and having cats and dogs in on the same days makes for a very full on day, but we love it. Our students are always amused and bemused by the cat grooming, especially when they can hear a loud meowing from a cat next door and expect us to come walking into the dog salon cut to shreds; it never happens…...and I will explain why. It’s a myth that cat grooming is difficult and that cats go crazy during grooming or bathing. It’s no different in terms of behaviour to dog grooming. 95% of dogs will enjoy or tolerate the grooming jobs they require. In the same way 95% of the cats will enjoy or at least tolerate the grooming service.
Why is there a call for cat grooming? Contrary to common belief, cats cannot always clean and wash themselves. With thick coated short haired breeds, semi-long- and long-haired breeds, they need additional help. As well as older 26 | Total Grooming Magazine

cats, cats with health issues, overweight cats and sometimes even lazy cats, they need assistance maintaining the coat. Cats will generally be anaesthetised for this once per year, but of course we know the risks are high with this course of action, and it can be avoided. My vet sends all cats to me now for coat care. I have groomed 13-year-old cats and older who have been sedated all their lives for coat removal and in fact, they have just sat there and enjoyed the attention and the grooming; never actually needing the sedation in the first place. These poor cats have to be one of the most neglected pets in terms of coat care that I have ever seen. They often arrive to my salon in the most atrocious of conditions. I had a cat once that had the matting on its cheeks, attached to

need lots more groomers to help with the feline’s upkeep, and to promote grooming education to the owners.
Cats in need, are huge indeed! People often say: “why get a long-haired animal if you aren’t going to groom it?” Well, the answer is simple, often they don’t go out to buy this cat, perhaps they are given it or left it by someone or sometimes, the cat finds them. They seem to have no idea that the cat needs help grooming this coat and they often find out when it’s too late. When the coat is matted or the faeces are stuck on at the rear, giving off an unpleasantly strong smell. This is usually when they will seek the help of a cat groomer. We use this first meeting as an opportunity to educate the owner to maintain the coat care regularly by grooming at home and with regular visits to the salon. This usually works and owners will book every two to three months with their cat – we also have quite a few who visit every month. And those that still come once a year or more. If you research cat groomers in your area you will still see there is a huge call for cat groomers. We have clients that travel a long way for our service, but we can’t groom them all.
What’s it like being a cat groomer? Much like being a dog groomer, only slightly different handling and use of equipment. Firstly, we recommend there are two of you available for grooming cats.
28 | Total Grooming Magazine
It may be difficult for some owners to keep long haired cats free of tangles
This may be two designated groomers or one groomer and the owner of the cat. Of course, it really depends on the temperament of the cat as to what assistance is required, but often two will make the job easier and quicker, completely removing the need for scruffing the cats too, which I hate! I have to say grooming cats is generally a lot quieter and slower than the dog grooming but just as interesting and entertaining.
What skills and equipment will I need? It may be difficult for some owners to keep long haired cats free of tangles. You will need a calm and confident disposition to be a cat groomer. Cats will play you just like the dogs and read your innermost thoughts. If you are afraid or over exuberant you will have difficulty communicating with the cats. With cats you need to be slow and
steady, calm and assertive, I find talking to them usually makes a huge difference to their demeanour. You need to have the correct equipment and techniques when working with cats. We follow general rules of procedure, always putting the health and safety of the groomer and the cat first, but as with the dogs, we may need to modify these for the individual. When the coat is matted on a cat it generally needs to be cut off - this is the job of a skilled person who uses the tools required. We use specialist Kiss trimmers on the cats to remove mats safely and as they are so quiet, without much objection from the cat. The blades are such good quality my one has already lasted me a year. You can find these on my website shop. We also use specialist gloves if required to protect the back of the hand and forearm. If a cat is going to scratch you, it will be here. You must be ready for all situations, watching the behaviour of the cat and concentrating on what you are doing, otherwise you will lose their attention. If you already possess transferable skills, like those of a dog groomer, then you can learn cat grooming very quickly. Just make sure the tutors are experienced who teach you cat grooming. Professionalism in Social Media
Social media is a great marketing tool for groomers, but it can also provide a few traps for the unwary. Joanne Angus, LCGI, shares her advice on maintaining professional standards on social media:
O
ver recent years, social media has become one of the biggest communications network for both business and personal use. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram are now as common place in today’s world as a pen. Used correctly social media is a fabulous marketing vehicle for your business but used incorrectly it can be a car crash! The issue lies within the written word – there is no emotion in writing. You can add as many punctuation marks or emojis as you want but someone can still misinterpret your meaning. Always think about the words you are typing on the keyboard and how they can be interpreted by another person. The words you type can remain in someone’s ‘saved box’ for a long time, so ensure the words you say are inoffensive. Never put anything in writing that you think or say in haste. If you feel the need to delete a post then it should not have been written in the first place, even if a derogatory comment is deleted almost as soon as you post it, someone may see it. If you feel the need to express your anger or concerns in writing then do it on paper and then it can be destroyed without causing any issues for someone else. Social media evidence has been used in court cases as evidence of wrong doing, from employees lying about why they aren’t at work to criminals filming a crime they are committing. Clients and friends can be
32 | Total Grooming Magazine
lost through mistakes made on social media. Paper and pen can cause a lot less damage than a keyboard! Remember that photographs are there for all to see so be careful of the sights you offer for viewing! You may think your latest ‘selfie’ is fabulous but it can say a lot about you to your clients. Ensure you have a caption with the photograph or picture to convey a clear message to the viewer. Likewise with quotes and catch phrases, their misinterpretation is also paramount to confusions and upsets caused on social media. The advantages of social media can also be the disadvantages. Don’t forget that Facebook and Twitter etc. are linked to friends of friends of friends. Any comment you make could be seen by thousands of people including existing and potential clients. Groups that are closed or private are not really secure either as information can be passed through the complex connections process. The positive side of social media when used sensibly and professionally is the exposure you can gain through networking with fellow professionals worldwide and sharing work ideas and thoughts with each other. Photos and comments that you post should be set on all platforms to get full viewing potential and help with promotion of your business. Treated with care social media is your friend but remember….big brother is watching you!

Style to Rescue Success
This year’s Style to Rescue Grooming Event took place at the Kennel Club Buildings in Stoneleigh at the end of April and was even better attended than the first show.
F
ollowing the success of last year’s first ever grooming competition for UK rescue dogs, the second event achieved £7,548 for dog charities - an even greater sum for rescue dogs than last year’s £4,500. Sponsors and organiser, Vita Canis Style, set the strapline: “helping those who cannot help themselves” which set the tone for the event. Jitka Krizova of Vita Canis and founder of the event said: “The cherry on the cake last year was being nominated by the Grooming Industry for the “Event of the Year” in their 2018 achievement awards! We currently don’t know the results. Whatever the result of this is at the International Grooming Conference, we’re grateful for all the publicity generated for rescue dogs, rescue organisations and our generous sponsors.” As expected, this year’s Vita Canis Style to Rescue was even bigger and better. We had more competitors, more rescue centres attending, more trade stands and we were able to raise even more money. I am thrilled to report that Vita Canis Style to Rescue 2019 raised £7,548! The money has been split between this year’s participating rescue centers: Wheels to Paws UK, Many Tears Animal Rescue, Hessa’s Homeless Hounds; Petwelfare Stafford, Poodles from Portugal and STECS – Scottish Terrier Emergency Care Scheme. Jitka Krizova said: I would like to thank our amazing judges this year - Lakhi Thindal and Colin 34 | Total Grooming Magazine

This is what the rescue organisations had to say about the event: Many Tears: “2018 saw the first Style to Rescue grooming competition organised by Vita Canis and Many Tears was asked if they would like to take part. This is a grooming competition with a difference as groomers have no idea what dog they will groom until they arrive and select an envelope. Dogs are either rescue dogs which are still looking for homes or those already adopted. As a local supporter I took up the challenge and sorted a number of dogs to attend. We had a great day, raised money for the rescue and were delighted to be asked to attend again in 2019. What can I say is that if 2018 was great, 2019 was absolutely fantastic. Bigger, better, more groomers, more dogs, more stalls, a great atmosphere and most importantly an impressive amount raised for the rescues which attended. Everyone was so friendly and the groomers really took the needs of the dogs into consideration, giving them regular breaks if necessary, to cope with the needs of nervous dogs or those with physical problems. The hall had a real buzz to it all day, it was fascinating to watch the grooming and the groomers were so supportive of each other. The judges were very approachable, putting groomers at their ease and were genuinely interested in the dogs. And the dogs, well they were just superstars! Many Tears Animal Rescue is a rescue which mainly takes ex-breeders many of which need specialist veterinary care for eye and heart

problems, liver shunts to name a few of the problems. Therefore they rely on fundraising and donations to allow them to ensure each dog receives the care it requires. Thank you to the team at Vita Canis for asking us to take part in Style to Rescue and I can’t wait to see what you do in 2020” Liz, Many Tears Animal Rescue Patricia, Poodles from Portugal: “This was our first time at Style to Rescue - long drive for us and I must admit to being a tad concerned as to how the little rescues would cope with such a long day and busy environment. Upon arrival I was struck by the vast number of vehicles in the car park and people milling around - how would these three vulnerable babies cope? I entered the hall somewhat warily - no need! Despite the many vendors, spectators, competitors and dogs what instantly struck me was the overall calm that pervaded the venue. We walked in to join our colleagues and they noticed the surprise in my face. This event remained the same the whole day. Calm, welcoming, happy, respectful but above all, compassionate. I cannot stress enough to anyone considering coming along next year - this is one if not the, most compassionate and genuinely caring event I have attended. Of course, everyone wants to win but somehow that didn’t come across. By that I mean, the grooming competitors and the Judges were only concerned with the welfare of the dogs, and desperately concerned that the owners
were happy with the end result. I wondered into the ring on a couple of occasions to see groomers doing their bit with nervous dogs in their laps or being cuddled, a couple of paralyzed dogs receiving so much affection. I was relieved I had tissues in my pocket asI found the day really rather emotional. The organisation was superb, so much to juggle and never a raised voice or cross expression. I had told myself, as you do, to rein back on the plastic.........How could I with so many first class stalls and stands, I went home with more scissors, shampoos, lotions and potions, toys and treats. I mustn’t forget to mention the catering - just gorgeous real chilli and again, service with a smile. I cannot recommend this event highly enough. If you are a groomer, aspiring groomer, rescue or foster home come along, in fact anyone come along and spectate it really is a super day out and a super cause. We arrived home very late, tired but very happy and the three little fluffies looked beautiful and had had a wonderful time with their very talented groomers. Thank you to everyone for giving us such a memorable day out and thank you from Poodles from Portugal for your generous donation which will go towards helping fluffies in the U.K. and from Portugal”. Jitka concluded: “I think everyone who has attended this event in 2018 and 2019 would agree with me that this charity dog grooming competition for rescue dogs is not just about raising money to donate to the rescue centres – it’s also about giving hope
to the dogs and hopefully finding them new loving homes, it’s about spoiling the rescues who don’t have their forever homes yet, it’s for new groomers looking for some experience in competing (the competition is brilliant for groomers who’ve never competed as it’s more relaxing, and they have more time and less pressure), and finally, it’s about education and awareness, and a community coming together seeing old friends and meeting new ones! “We’re already excited about next year. Fleas – a groomer’s worst nightmare? Flea infestations are something groomers try to avoid at all costs. Beware the new client that books their dog in for a long session because their coat is ‘tangled.’ All too often groomers discover they have taken on more than they bargained for but why are fleas so feared? About fleas:
So why are fleas so feared?
Fleas are parasites that feed on blood. Fleas can live on any warm-blooded animal, but seem to prefer to live on humans, cats, dogs and rodents. They can also infest pet bedding, carpets, blankets.
Fleas are best known for spreading the Bubonic Plague. They also transmit the bacterial disease murine typhus to humans through infected rats. Their saliva is an allergen that can cause allergic reactions in pets and humans. Fleas can also transfer tapeworms and
cause anemia in pets. Flea bites cause painful, itchy red bumps. . This diseases kills many people, so maleria pills and early treatment is necessary .
Flea fact file: Fleas transport themselves on rodents and other mammals, and usually remain on their hosts at all times. The most common species is the cat flea, which often feasts on cats, dogs and humans. Fleas do not fly. Instead, they jump from one place to another. In fact, fleas
can jump as high as 8” vertically, which is 150 times their own height. If we could do this, we would be able to leap over skyscrapers! • Size: 1/12” to 1/6” • Shape: Flat • Color: Dark, reddish brown • Legs: 6
• Wings: No • Antenna: Yes • Clean and vacuum frequently to keep areas flea-free. Give dogs lots of baths, regular flea and tick treatments. There are natural products now available that can also help to keep these pests at bay.
who was suffering from flea allergies as a result of his problem. Luckily, she is situated adjacent to a local veterinary practice, so she took every precaution to limit any damage to her salon – moving dogs into other premises and enlisted the help of a veterinary nurse in treating the dog in question. The owners claimed no knowledge of the problem.
Tina spent hours resolving the poor dog’s issues, knowing that she wouldn’t be able to recoup all of her costs and lost time but convinced that this was the only way the dog would have any chance of becoming free of fleas and healthy once more. She gave the owners strict instructions on how to keep him free of fleas in future.
Case study: Last year, a salon on the Welsh border accepted a booking from a new client whose dog was in a ‘tangled state.’ The reality was that the dog was literally crawling with fleas. Salon owner Tina was faced with a dilemma: should she return the dog without treating it or treat it and sort out the issue and risk salon infestation? She decided to treat the poor pet

P
arasites...The thought we may catch or be carrying parasites is not a nice one , but the reality is working around dogs , we have a very good chance of being infected by them. Tapeworms, Roundworms, Giardia, Cryptosporidium, P.Falciparum, D.Fragilis,Toxoplasma, Guinea Worm, Lice, Scabies, Fleas and Ticks to name but a few. So let’s look at the different parasites: LICE - these insects live on your blood and there are three types, head , body and pubic. Luckily only body lice spread diseases and they crawl. They lay eggs on you and when they hatch, you start itching. They are easily treated with shampoo and other over the counter medications. SCABIES - dig into your body and lay eggs . Caught by skin to skin contact from an infected person and causing you to itch at night creating a pimply rash, crusty patches and sores. This is treated with a prescription that will kill the scab.

PORK WORMS - obviously caught from eating raw or undercooked pork or coming into contact with someone who has them. The disease can lead to infecting the intestines and brain and can lead to a disease called cysticercosis. Some people get better with or without medication others need surgery. TAPEWORM - creates abdominal pain , nausea , diarrhoea , weight loss . This needs medication to kill them and is 95% curable. GIARDIA - is commonly caught when people go camping and you get gas, cramping, bloating and nausea. It is

caught from food or drinking water or contact with poo of an infected person or animal. This is treated by prescription drugs . CRYPTOSPORIDIUM - also referred to as ‘crypto’. This is be transmitted by contact with human or animal poo and kids often catch it form pool water. It causes diarrhoea , which can last a long time , but usually goes away on its own . P.FALCIPARUM - mosquitoes can carry this parasite and it causes malaria . This diseases kills many people, so maleria pills and early treatment is necessary . D. FRAGILIS - this can cause stomach pain and diarrhoea and infects the large intestine. You may however have no symptoms at all. This is common through out the world. TOXOPLASMA - is found in meat , water and infected cat feces. Pregnant women are told to avoid cat litter trays as this can lead to serious symptoms like cysts in the brain , muscles and eyes . Though this disease is generally not treated medication can be prescribed for severe infections . GUINEA WORM - this is a roundworm which use to be very common in the day before clean tap water . When people drank water from ponds , it could be infected by the larvae and the worms mated and grew in the stomach , then burst out through a blister in the skin .It could take up to a year for for the symptoms to show and there is no treatment for the disease . FLEAS - blood sucking insects that love warm blooded animals and humans .They create itching in an animal and leave signs of ‘flea dirt ‘ on the fur. They also make us itch and leave small pimples where they bite. TICKS - of which there are several types: Dog ticks, sheep ticks and hedgehog ticks all of which can infect your dogs, but are treatable and can be eradicated by breaking the breeding cycle. These parasites require a host to feed and breed from and spread infectious diseases to both pets and people. Ticks can cause a serious illness in humans called Lymes disease which if not diagnosed quickly enough is incurable and leads to nasty symptoms. There are also good parasites and 44 | Total Grooming Magazine

Tick Season is Here
Ticks lurk in the long grass waiting to latch on to a host
D
og owners have been urged to take caution as the warm weather approaches and ticks emerge to feed on the blood of passing humans and animals. Gardening experts at BillyOh.com have compiled a list of top tips to help the public stay safe during peak tick season. Ticks are most common in the UK’s woodland areas and are often found clinging to tall grass and shrubs – but numbers have increased dramatically in the past ten years. A blood-sucking member of the spider family, there are over 22 species in the UK, each becoming particularly active from the start of spring to midautumn. The majority feed on wild animals such as bats, woodland birds and badgers, but they are known to cling onto family pets or bite at the ankles of passers-by, too. Ticks can transmit bacteria when feeding which can cause Lyme disease, which can become serious if not treated. Named as a danger to public health, 46 | Total Grooming Magazine
experts are urging people to remain vigilant of the critter and ensure that they are properly prepared to deal with the risk. Tips include swapping sandals for wellies, opting for light coloured clothing and not straying from footpaths unless necessary.
Here are BillyOh.com’s top tips for ticks: 1. Stick to paths Try not to stray from paths and avoid overhanging vegetation unless necessary. Ticks do not jump or fly so sticking to clear areas without tall grass or shrubs will decrease the chances of being bitten. If in an area where there is no footpath, try and avoid tall grass or shady areas that are surrounded by shrubs.
2. Light Clothing When in areas of woodland remained covered, wear long sleeve tops and full-length trousers. Protect areas such as the back of the knees, armpits and the groin area. Opt for light coloured clothing in order to easily identify any
ticks present that may become attached.
3. Footwear Wellies are not only reserved for rainy days and are perfect when in high risk areas, as you can tuck trousers into the wellie boots. Tucking trousers into socks is also a great defence mechanism if wellies are not an option.
4. Regular checks Ticks are very small and hard to identify when not paying attention. Check regularly whilst outside and also when home in order to remove any feeding ticks. The longer a tick is left attached the harder it is to remove.
5. Right tools Avoid any home remedies to try and remove ticks such as covering the affected area of the body in Vaseline or nail varnish or even burning them off. Instead, use a tick removal tool. This will help avoid aggravating the tick and lower the risk of secondary infection. When removed, use an antiseptic wipe and be aware of any symptoms of Lyme disease.

A Star is Born
Behaviourist, groomer and founder of Paw Naturel, Angela Pinder, shares her experiences of establishing a natural product range for salons:
Angela Pinder
How did it come about? As a groomer for 12 years, I had used a lot of different products which had left my hands and skin in a terrible condition. Some products irritated or triggered either my eczema or allergic reactions to either my hands arms or face. Over the years I had tried lots of different brands from different countries at various price points and never really found a solution. I have suffered from 48 | Total Grooming Magazine
allergies since I was a child, and spent lots of years using steroid creams, emollients. Continuous treatments of antibiotics for skin infections etc. Your skin is one of your biggest organs and one we don’t value enough. My journey started on a trip to a large European show where I visited a lot of trade stands looking at the current trends and new products. I had a feeling I would meet someone/brand
etc and bring it back to the UK, and I did, I was introduced to two options; one European and one Australian. There were quite a few complications with the different brands - one brand contained banned ingredients in some of the products which would breach UK rules, the other contained dead animals. This started me on my journey of research research, research. I had

A selection of Paw Naturel products
noticed an increase in customers coming into my pet shop/grooming salon and asking for no perfume/ fragrance to be left on their dogs. There were greater numbers of dogs coming in with skin problems; some even life threatening, and I could totally relate to that. I know firsthand how debilitating skin reactions can be, except the difference is dogs can’t talk and tell you where it hurts. I knew myself with some of the lotions and potions I had tried over the years that these could sting and be really painful. It was then that I decided there was most certainly a gap in the market, to create a really highend product range
50 | Total Grooming Magazine
that would nourish and love skin, not tear it up. Not just for the dog but for the human hands that applies the products. I spent a lot of time researching, reading books, researching ingredients, talking to lots of specialist chemists, talking to dermatologists, studying the top 26 allergens which are high on the patch tests that the hospital conducts. I have made sure that none of these ingredients were included in the products, and voila Paw Naturel was born. All products are tested on me, if I get a reaction from them they don’t go any further. I have really high standards, and believe that my products firmly underline this stance, from high quality recyclable packaging and quality ingredients, through to the customer service and delivery. I feel that our success has been down to this. Our retail range was launched shortly after Crufts last year, and now we have nearly 90 stockists on board, alongside winning best dog grooming product of the year at PATS, which was amazing. Retail wise, if you are using a good quality product on your pet dogs, then
more than likely the owner will want to replicate that process at home. We have a few single groomers who work from home who sell our products. You don’t have to be a sales person to sell a product, you just explain the benefits and let them decide. Social media is a great way to communicate to your customers about what products you use. The dynamics of the pet industry have changed drastically over the last 10 years. The food and treat market has been phenomenal, we have gone from 4% meat based complete diets to 90% meat, with a massive surge in raw based diets. I see the same with pet products - owners are becoming more and more savvy about what they want to put on their dogs and don’t underestimate them, they also know their stuff too. We have lots of exciting plans in the pipeline for products to be launched and we will continue to be at the top of the game launching incredible innovative products for dogs and dog groomers alike, to help create more revenue and more profit for your bottom line. Check out our range at www.paw-naturel.co.uk

The Pet Blood Bank
In this issue we discover more about the valuable work of Pet Blood Bank UK and how pets can donate to this lifesaving service:
L
aunched in 2007, Pet Blood Bank UK is the only charity that provides a canine blood bank service for all veterinary practitioners across the UK. The charity’s aim is to advance animal health and welfare and to relieve suffering by providing quick and convenient access to blood. Similar to the human blood service, dog owners kindly bring along their much loved canine companions to give blood at one of many sessions across the country.
Canine donor programme Similar to the human blood service, dog owners kindly register their much loved canine companions to give blood at one of many sessions arranged across the country. After each session, the blood is taken to a processing centre in Loughborough where it is separated into red blood cells 52 | Total Grooming Magazine
and plasma products, and then stored ready for despatch. An average of five sessions a week are held at veterinary practices and kennels, with over 10,000 lifesaving donors registered with the charity. Last year, over 5,000 units of blood were sent out and as transfusion medicine advances, the demand continues to grow. Every unit of blood can help save four other lives, saving thousands of lives every year.
Donor criteria Like us, dogs have different blood types and in the UK the charity tests for DEA 1 Negative and Positive. With only 30% of donors being Negative blood type, keeping up with demand can be challenging. Certain breeds are more likely to be Negative and the blood bank is particularly appealing to these owners to register their canine
companion. At present, stocks of this type are low and there is an appeal for the following breeds to help: Airedales, American Bulldog, Border Collies, Boxers, Doberman, Dogue de Bordeaux, English Bull Terriers, Flat Coated Retrievers, German Shepherds, Greyhounds, Lurchers, Old English Sheepdog, Pointer (English), and Weimaraners. To be a donor, your dog needs to be: • Fit and healthy • Between one and eight years old • Weigh more than 25kg • Have a good temperament • Have never travelled abroad • Vaccinated • Not on any medication When you register your dog, our team will be in touch to confirm your details and discuss arranging your first appointment. After this, we will send out a Donor Information Pack
There is a need for more Border Collie donors
which includes a Consent Form and Donor Health Check Form. Please complete these and bring them with you to your appointment along with your dog’s vaccination record. When you come along to a Pet Blood Bank UK (PBB) donation session, you will be greeted by the staff who are hosting the session. We work on an appointment system, much like your veterinary practice. Your appointment is split into two parts: 1. Health and suitability check with our fully qualified vet PBB UK will go through the following process with your dog prior to any donation going ahead: • Undertake a physical examination of your dog and take its health history • Carefully clip and clean two small areas of your dog’s neck • Take a small blood sample and run some tests to ensure that your dog is fit to donate • Microchip your dog if it is not already microchipped 2.Donation
What happens at a donation session: If your dog passes the initial checks, you will be shown to the donation area where a fully qualified phlebotomist will collect about 450ml of your dog’s
blood. After donating, we’ll ask you to stay at the donation venue for a small amount of time to allow your lifesaver to have a drink, something to eat and to be observed by our team. Your dog will receive a goody bag which includes an “I’m a Lifesaver” bandana and tag to thank them. They will also get to pick out a toy to take home and Pet Blood Bank takes their picture for their Facebook and Twitter pages! You are then ready to go home. We advise that dogs rest for the rest of the day and can go back to their normal routine the following day.
In total, you should allow around 45 minutes for your appointment, although the actual donation process only takes between 5 and 10 minutes.
What happens to your dog’s blood? Approximately 450ml of blood is taken during a donation from your dog. The blood is taken from the jugular vein in your dog’s neck and goes into a special blood collection bag containing anti-coagulants to stop the blood from clotting. The collection set has four bags attached to the tubing, one bag
Chester’s Story Andy brings his canine companion, Chester along to donate at Rutland House Veterinary Hospital and recently reached the impressive milestone of nine donations! Andy shared Chester’s story: “Chester came into the care of the Mersey and North Cheshire Branch of the RGT with a reputation of being aggressive. It was quickly realised this was all related to nerves, but it was an extreme case and kennels only made it worse. Because of this, I fostered Chester and he slowly improved, and after around a year, he
did his first donation with Pet Blood Bank. “He surprised everyone with how calm he was. His reputation preceded him but the calm, understanding and professional approach of the PBB team ensured that first donation was a success. There has now followed a further eight successful donations. To put it mildly, if this dog can donate, any dog can. He’s still fear aggressive, even with the dogs he lives with and unpredictable with people but the PBB staff understand how to approach a dog and relax it.”

is used to collect the blood and the others are used during processing.
After Collection After each donation session, the units of blood collected are transported to our processing centre in Loughborough. The blood is transported in a protective box which allows it to cool down gradually to around 20°C. This is the optimum temperature for the processing stage.
Processing When the blood arrives at Pet Blood Bank’s processing centre, the lab team inspect each unit of blood and log the unique reference number which relates to your dog’s donor number. This means every unit of blood can be traced back to each donor. The tubing and needle are removed in sterile conditions and the unit of blood is weighed and placed in the centrifuge. It is then spun at 3,800 revolutions per minute, for fifteen minutes to allow the red blood cells to separate from the plasma. When the unit is removed from the centrifuge, the lab team carefully
Donor dog: Frank Frank is a five year-old Border Collie cross German Shepherd who was found by the dog warden as a stray roaming the streets of Bristol. He was on death row when Heather Loring rescued him. That was four years ago and since then Frank has put on weight and grown into a confident, happy dog. Heather heard about the Pet Blood Bank through a friend on facebook and signed Frank up as a donor for the first time this year. Heather commented: “Frank doesn’t mind blood being taken at all. He loves all the attention and the treats, he gets treated like a real VIP. I think it is very worthwhile and hearing back from Nickie, Kassie’s owner, was a very moving experience. We are very proud of him and delighted to find out about the life he helped to save.”

Donor dog: Hudson Hudson is a five year-old chocolate Labrador. He is a working gun dog and lives with Fiona and Michael Gray in Dundee and donates blood for Pet Blood Bank every three months. Fiona commented: “Hudson loves all the fuss and treats. He just lies there, snoring away. I feel it is vital for dogs to come forward and donate blood to this worthy cause. When we received the ‘thank you’ card from Nickie, I had a lump in my throat as I felt such empathy with her situation. ‘Kassie is my world’ she said and I knew exactly what she meant. We are delighted to
transfer the plasma into one of the other collection bags and the red cell nutrient is added to the red cells in the other bag to extend their shelf life to six weeks. Both are labelled with the unique reference numbers.
Storage The plasma is firstly placed in a freezer at -80°C and once frozen, it is transferred into the -34°C freezer with a shelf life of up to five years. The red blood cells are placed in a special refrigerator and stored at 4°C
have helped her dog’s recovery.” A full check is carried out by veterinary professionals ahead of the donation procedure to check the dog is in good health and suitable for donation. Pet Blood Bank holds blood donation sessions at selected veterinary practices at various locations around the UK. for up to six weeks.
Dispatch and Use The units of plasma and red blood cells are stored at Pet Blood Bank UK until they are needed by a vet for a patient. When required, the unit of plasma or red blood cells is packed carefully in temperature controlled boxes to ensure the temperature is maintained until the blood reaches the vet. When it arrives, it is carefully warmed to body temperature before being transfused to a sick or injured dog.
For the love of a dog For dog mad, Nickie Torbet, it was a dream come true to finally have her own King Charles Spaniel puppy, Kassie. And the delightful, playful puppy did not disappoint her new owner when she joined Nickie in her Ash Vale home; within just a short time the two became inseparable. Unfortunately, Kassie developed a few health issues and allergies which, although relatively minor, did give Nickie a few misgivings. Sadly, these were the prelude to a much more concerning condition which Kassie went on to develop. An early riser Kassie certainly wasn’t, but on this particular Spring day Nickie noticed her little dog was particularly lethargic and was also refusing to eat. Nickie encouraged Kassie to get up and was devastated when her dog immediately collapsed. Nickie said: “I was terrified for poor Kassie and picked her up and rushed her to my vet, the Companion Care
practice in Pets at Home, Farnham. Roger Holden, the senior veterinary practitioner instinctively knew what was wrong. He immediately looked inside Kassie’s mouth and noticed that it was white instead of the usual healthy pink colour that it should have been. “It turned out that she had dramatically low blood cells. Her pack cell volume was seven and should have been 40. Kassie was diagnosed as suffering from a condition called Auto Immune Haemolytic Anaemia (AIHA) and she needed an immediate blood transfusion if she was to survive.” Nickie’s vet arranged for blood to be sent via an emergency service from Pet Blood Bank UK (PBBUK) – a national canine blood bank service and the first and only charity of its kind to collect blood from donor dogs, process, store and supply blood products for vets who need to perform life-saving transfusions in dogs. Thankfully for Kassie the blood
was readily available and this service, together with her vet’s swift diagnosis and response, saved Kassie’s life. So severe was Kassie’s condition that a second transfusion was necessary a couple of days later. Following this emergency surgery, Kassie began a steady recovery and although she is on medication, she is back to her old self again. Nickie said: “Kassie means the world to me and I came so close to losing her. If it hadn’t been for the availability of the blood she wouldn’t be with me now. I am so thankful not only to the Pet Blood Bank and to Roger, my vet, for his fast response, but also to the kind-hearted owners of the dogs that donated their blood to the Pet Blood Bank.” Nickie was so grateful that she sent cards to the two dogs whose blood had saved Kassie’s life, explaining how much their gift had meant to her and her dog.

Up your game! Beware!!!
Can internet enabled crime affect your business?
I
f you or your employees have access to the internet or email, hold client data in an electronic format, operate a website or store data in the cloud then the answer is most definitely “yes”!
What would you do if... 1) A hacker managed to access your system, seize your data and demanded money in return for the data? 2) A hacker gained access to your sensitive data and personal information? 3) A member of staff innocently clinked on a link in an email which allowed a hacker to gain access to your system? The data held within a business can be extremely valuable to hackers as it commands a high price tag when sold on to criminals who will use it to commit fraud and identity theft. Cyber-criminals are becoming increasingly clever and are able to generate emails which appear to come from a reliable source. These emails contain sophisticated links which may contain malicious software (malware) which enables the hacker to access systems and bank accounts. Security software will aid in the prevention of a cyberattack, but will not make it impossible. Cyber-attackers may choose to hack into the most secure system as a personal challenge or to impress their peers. Cliverton’s sister company South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB) are able to provide expertise on this complex subject and can offer explicit Internet Enabled Crime Cover which addresses the key financial risks faced by clients. travelling with their animals. The motoring experts at LeaseCar.uk have compiled their advice for travelling with pets, with the top priority being to keep them and other passengers safe. The Highway Code states that a dog or other animals must be suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you or themselves if you stop quickly. Failure to do this could result in a fine and penalty points. The experts are urging owners
to use suitable restraints including harnesses for dogs, pet guards for larger, active dogs and cages or carriers for smaller animals. Other tips featured in the guide cover preparing your animal for the journey, advice for during the trip and what to do when you finally arrive. Tim Alcock from LeaseCar.uk said: “Travelling with your pet can be stressful, especially if they become anxious or suffer from motion sickness. “These tips have been put

together to help make the journey as easy as possible for both your animal and you. Preparing them ahead of the trip with a long walk and a light meal will get you off to a good start. “Once the journey is underway, it’s important to make sure your pet is safe, and you adhere to the guidance set out in the Highway Code. Also remember to have plenty of stops, keep water in the car with your pet and make sure they don’t overheat. “And when you finally reach your destination, let them run or take them on a good long walk.”
Before you start your journey 1. Go for a walk Take your pet for a long walk before you head off on your travels to burn off excess energy. They’re more likely to spend the journey relaxing if they’re worn out. 2. Feeding Feed your pet at least two hours before travel – they travel better on an empty stomach and it reduces the risk of 60 | Total Grooming Magazine
travel sickness. Also make sure there’s water in the car in a spill proof bowl.
On the journey 3. Keeping your pet safe Make sure you stick to the rules in the Highway Code and keep your pet safe by using restraints. Harnesses are great for dogs. For larger, more active dogs, try a pet guard which can turn the boot into a dedicated pet area. For smaller pets, consider investing in a carrier, crate or cage. 4. Breaks Remember to take plenty of breaks on the journey for toilet stops and exercise, especially if you’re travelling a long way. And remember to keep your pet on a lead when you take them out of the car. 5. Window Shades Invest in some window shades to help keep the car cool and block out direct sunlight. This will make the journey more comfortable for your pet. 6. Keep your pet relaxed
Journeys can be stressful to pet, so try and make them as happy and relaxed as possible. This could be as simple as their favourite toy or a blanket from home. 7. Cooling down Don’t let your pet hang out of the window to cool down. Not only is this illegal, they could injure themselves. Instead turn on the air conditioning and open windows furthest from your animal. 8. Breakdown If you breakdown while travelling with your pet, don’t let them out unless it safe to do so and make sure you keep them on a lead but make sure to keep them cool in the car – use a cool coat or mat and keep windows open or air conditioning on.
When you arrive 9. Let them free As soon as you arrive and it’s safe to do so, give your pet a chance to stretch their legs and run around.

Wrap that Cat!
H
ave you considered the Certificate of Competence in Cat Grooming qualification? Reports from trainers in this PIF approved qualification highlight that the uptake is growing with some students aiming to start their own grooming business. But maybe you’re put off ? Bathing, grooming, clipping and other delicate procedures are not always appreciated or accepted by our feline friends. Often, they will try to remove themselves from the situation. If they are unable to do this, fear aggression can quickly escalate until the only option is to fight. Scruffing and muzzling can seem like the only solution and might make

completion of the task faster on the day but, (along with punitive handling) research has clearly proven that resorting to these techniques simply escalates the original behaviour. It may also cause the development of new (more dangerous) behaviours, and let’s not forget, the cat will associate the punishment with whoever is delivering it! What are the alternatives? For many years, people have used towels to restrain cats, but toweling is designed for moisture absorption and offers little or no protection. Now available to cat care professionals is the revolutionary Cat Wrap™. Already highly acclaimed by vets and nurses, the Cat Wrap
has been made specifically for gentle wrapping restraint. The effects of light pressure (swaddling) on the body have been studied in animals with positive results showing a reduction in anxiety and the promotion of relaxation. With soft and comfy fleece on one side and high tech slash and tear resistant ProTex fabric on the other, the Cat Wrap provides extremely strong protection from unwanted paws, claws, and nails, and the ability to machine wash and tumble dry means a hygienic alternative to gloves or safety sleeve is always at hand. No need to muzzle, glove or scruff. It’s time to Wrap.
