News and Product Round-up BIGA Cat Grooming Two British Isles Grooming Association (BIGA) supporters have teamed up to revolutionise cat grooming in the UK
F
ern Gresty of iPET Network, met Heidi Anderton when they were both Directors at BIGA, and true to the spirit of the organisation, the doors were opened for a partnership and further promotion grooming for animal welfare. Heidi’s Absolutely Animals business in Lewisham is now an approved iPET Network Training Provider, and industry veteran Heidi, who has run her business for 28 years, worked with Fern and partner Sarah Mackay to create the UK’s first portfolio of dedicated cat grooming qualifications. Fern said: “This really does show how being part of a trade organisation like BIGA can open doors to new opportunities. “iPET Network is also exactly that too, and all those that become Training Provider’s with iPET Network benefit from being part of our inspiring gang! “We are so excited to have worked with Heidi on these qualifications, and as far as we are concerned the sky’s the limit for cat grooming in this country, both in the UK’s current salons and beyond!” Heidi currently grooms around 30 cats a week at the London salon, and her unique two groomers per cat technique is a key part of the training she passes on to students who come through the door. She said: “This is the first nationally accredited portfolio of cat grooming qualifications, and I want to encourage existing salons to consider cat grooming, because it is so important for their welfare. “I’m really pleased to be working with iPET Network, and thrilled that 4 | Total Grooming Magazine

Rosewood Pet Products Raises Funds for Charity
R
osewood Pet Products has raised £7,750 for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, following a sample sale held at its headquarters in Hortonwood, Telford. Following on from Rosewood’s first sample sale in 2018, the event which took place this September was the most successful to date, surpassing last year’s amount raised by over £2,000. Customers had the chance to choose from a range of pet toys, beds, collars, treats and apparel for every kind of animal, discounted by up to 90%. 100% of proceeds have been donated to Midlands Air Ambulance, one of the longest established and busiest air ambulance organisations in the UK. The charity is responsible for funding and operating three air ambulance helicopters and two critical care cars serving six counties across the Midlands. In addition, surplus stock not sold on the day has been donated to charities in the local Telford area. Maria Jones, Shropshire fundraising executive for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, said: “We’re very grateful to Rosewood Pet Products for raising
£7,750 to support the critical care work we do in the region. To put it into perspective, each air ambulance mission costs an average of £2,500, and each critical care car mission costs an average of £224. We do not receive funding from the Government for our daily missions so rely entirely on the support and generosity of local people and businesses.” Bev Panter, Marketing Director at Rosewood Pet Products, commented: “It was a pleasure to welcome the public back through our doors once again to raise money for a charity close to many
of our hearts. We hope our donation will go some way in helping the fully charity-funded service continue to provide vital life support here in the Midlands. “We’re delighted about the continued success of our charity sales, not only in ensuring all our products find a loving pet and a home, but also in bringing the local community of animal lovers together to support a worthy cause.” To donate to Midlands Air Ambulance, visit: www.midlandsairambulance.com/ donatenow

Two hero hounds received prestigious awards at the House of Lords Jasper supports traumatised NHS COVID-19 staff while Bear rescues injured koalas
T
wo very special dogs were stars of the show at the House of Lords recently when they were honoured by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) for their heroic work helping humans and wildlife. While Lancashire therapy dog Jasper was recognised for supporting hundreds of NHS staff working through the COVID-19 pandemic, koala detection dog Bear was also awarded for his work, on the other side of the world in Australia, where he helps locate injured and sick koalas in need of rescue. Six-year-old cockapoo Jasper, along with owner David Anderson (46), from Preston, a hospital chaplain and counsellor, works with East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust to support more than 9,000 staff across the Trust’s acute and community hospitals, including Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital. Before the pandemic Jasper had accompanied David to visit patients undergoing end of life care, as well as those suffering a mental health crisis. He has also worked with physiotherapists assisting patients affected by strokes, with patients encouraged to stroke Jasper as part of their therapy. When COVID-19 hit, with Blackburn one of the worst affected areas in the country, Jasper was no longer able to visit the wards and initially had to stay at home. However, with the huge strain placed on staff working through the
10 | Total Grooming Magazine
Jasper with his award
darkest days of the pandemic, David soon realised there was a need for Jasper, as well as himself, to provide inperson support to hospital staff. David set up opportunities for them to spend time with Jasper either one on one or in small groups through his
‘Conversations with Jasper’ sessions which proved to be hugely popular, with more than 1,000 staff taking part. Jasper spends at least two full days a week in the Trust’s hospitals and his role will continue to help support staff, though he is now allowed to visit
children’s wards too to support younger patients. David said: “Jasper’s role has always been to make people smile and feel better and during the peak of the pandemic, when everyone was giving so much, sometimes staff just needed to have a cuddle with Jasper, have a cry and go back to the wards.” Jasper is trained to go to people showing distress or crying and is very perceptive to the emotions around him. David explained that although the peak of the pandemic has passed, it was at this point for some staff that the trauma of the previous months hit home, and many have continued to struggle as the next wave of COVID patients has been markedly younger. David, who received a British Empire Medal for his work during the pandemic, said: “All of us here will carry the scars of working through COVID forever, so it is important we offer this support. We are thrilled that Jasper has been given this award from IFAW and will ensure he has a few extra treats on the day in recognition of all his hard work!” Jasper received his Animal of the Year award ‘in person’ at IFAW’s prestigious Animal Action Awards event at the House of Lords, while Bear was given Special Recognition and appeared via video. Six-year-old rescue dog Bear, an Australian koolie, was once struggling to find a forever home due to his boundless energy and obsessive enthusiasm for play. However, these qualities, together with a sharply honed sense of smell, made Bear an A* canine student when he was trained by the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC’s) Detection Dogs for Conservation team. He now works as an IFAW x USC koala detection dog to sniff out koalas, and sometimes other native wildlife, in need of rescue. Bear, who recognises the scent of the fur of live koalas, has been trained to drop silently to the ground at the base of the tree where he has located a koala, to ensure it is not disturbed. During the infamous Black Summer bushfires of 2019-2020, which raged 12 | Total Grooming Magazine

across Australia, huge swathes of koala habitat were destroyed and thousands of koalas were among the billions of wild animals that perished. One ray of hope at this time was Bear, whose searches of scorched land resulted in more than 100 koalas being located, many in need of veterinary care. Some suffered burn injuries while others were severely malnourished and dehydrated, but Bear’s efforts enabled them to be rescued and rehabilitated before being released back to the wild. Bear’s handler Dr Romane Cristescu, of USC, said: “We think Bear really deserved this award because he’s been
such a good boy in helping us find and rescue a lot of koalas, especially during the bushfires, but he works throughout the year to help us in our job to make a better and safer place for koalas. We’ll give Bear extra pats and extra play for his award.” James Sawyer, UK Director of IFAW, said: “Jasper and Bear are two truly amazing dogs, both highlighting the important and positive relationships between animals and humans. They have made a huge difference to so many and continue to do so. We are very proud to recognise their achievements with IFAW awards.”

Behind the scenes... Who are Mutneys?
M
utneys Professional Pet Care Ltd has been a staple name in the dog grooming business world for the last 26 years. The founders, Jamie and Stephanie Roberts come from dog grooming family backgrounds and it seemed natural back in 1995 for them to take their dedication, love and knowledge of our furry friends and develop dog grooming products. They have put their heart and soul to develop a safe product which would suit everyone’s budget. After much research and dedication, the Mutneys Shampoo and Fragrance range was developed with first shampoos Dewberry and Coconut still being part of their core range. They pride themselves to offer a product which is locally made and supervised by Jamie himself, biodegradable, eco-friendly and vegan friendly, pH balanced and finally with ingredients 16 | Total Grooming Magazine
which meet the Kennel Club standards and EU Regulations. A selection of dog grooming salon essentials started to follow following demand and today Mutneys offers a range of high quality super tubs, grooming tables and trolleys As they years gone by and the business grew, so did Mutneys workforce. Today they employ 15 dedicated employees, all willing to offer the best advice. Mutneys end goal is to be part of the dog grooming community and not just a one stop shop. In fact this year they launched a series of seminars the first being with top grooming expert Colin Taylor, and were invited to join Julie Harris on her educational tour. Mutneys Brand Ambassadors Lorraine Motterhead, Vikki Pearman and Millie Beddows is a continuous testimony of the high quality products they develop and their promise to offer as much support to the grooming community.

The Role of Diet in Managing Separation Anxiety Separation anxiety is a complex condition, and many factors can exacerbate it. It is important to always seek professional help in extreme circumstances. As with anything, a balanced diet is a vital part of any recovery programme:
The bond between a dog and owner is strong and many dogs suffer from some degree of separation anxiety when they are away from their owner
F
resh dog food producer, Butternut Box, has provided a guide to help understand separation anxiety in dogs and help your dog to cope whilst you’re apart. Separation anxiety: signs to look out for in dogs Also known as separation related behaviour, separation anxiety occurs when a dog and owner are apart, leading to the dog feeling distressed and reacting with signs such as: • Destructive behaviour as a result of 18 | Total Grooming Magazine
boredom, or your dog may frantically chew something that you recently touched that still carries your scent • Incontinence • Reports of howling and barking • Physiological signs of fear which can include an increase in heart rate, breathing, panting, salivating • Trembling, pacing, whining, and repetitive behaviour • In extreme cases self-mutilation and vomiting Owners have often recorded their dogs at home alone to identify any
concerning behaviour to make sure they’re as happy as they can be. After all, we now know what it’s like to be locked in the house all day bored and lonely — so why would we want that for our best friends? Things you can do to treat minor separation anxiety There are several things you can do to help your dog cope with separation anxiety. Firstly, it’s important to note that you shouldn’t leave a dog alone for too long. You should record your dog home alone first to assess the dog’s
reaction • Try not to make a big deal out of arriving and departing from your dog — calmly pet them • Leave your dog with an item of clothing you’ve recently worn • Teach your dog a word or action to signal you’ll return • Invest in over-the-counter calming products that can help reduce feelings of fear such as pheromone diffusers • Leave the radio on • A balanced and nutritious diet
Nutrition Humans experience emotions as a result of their social situation — and dogs do too, facing struggles such as loneliness and boredom. And, like humans, we should never underestimate the importance of a healthy, wellbalanced diet. For example, research published in the Journal of Veterinary Behaviour found that when dogs were fed a natural supplement derived from fish protein, their fear and anxiety was significantly reduced. A healthy diet can have the ability to extend a dog’s life expectancy and reduce risks of cancer, obesity, and digestive issues. Unsurprisingly, there is evidence to suggest that changing a dog’s nutrition can also significantly reduce feelings of anxiety. Meat by-products can also be used in some dry food, “animal derivatives” byproducts of the human food industry which may not be traditionally eaten by people.
So which foods are good to treat feelings of anxiety in dogs? Vitamin D-og Vitamin deficiencies can have a psychological effect on dogs — for example, vitamin E keeps dogs’ cognition functioning in tip-top condition and B vitamins can contribute to their mental balance. Specific foods that you can give your dog to ensure they get all the vitamins and minerals they need are: • Blueberries which can protect against stress • Kale for a cocktail of nutrients, 20 | Total Grooming Magazine
Dogs will often spend their time alone just watching and waiting for you to return
Dogs face struggles with boredom and loneliness, just like humans
such as vitamin A, B6, K, calcium, manganese, copper, potassium, iron, fibre, and antioxidants • Sweet potatoes that are packed with antioxidants • Beef which is a natural antidepressant with B vitamins • Turkey which is a great source of L-tryptophan • Oily fish for omega-3 fatty acids that suppress adrenaline production used in a dog’s fight or flight stress response In addition to sourcing some healthy alternatives for your furry friend, it’s also important to ensure that you’re offering your pup a balanced diet. It’s essential to feed your dog a variety of protein and vegetables for adequate nutrition. So, try to move away from the repetitive dry food and help your dog transition to a variety of gently cooked dog food instead. If you want to introduce new and
exciting elements into your dog’s diet, but you’re concerned that you don’t have enough time to cook fresh meals every day, don’t fear! There are a number of subscription services out there which you can tailor to your pooch’s specific needs, whether you’re looking for gently cooked dog food, sensitive stomach dog food, or, in this case, dog food that will help with your dog’s anxiety levels and leave your pet feeling healthier than ever! Diet alone might not cure dogs of anxiety, but it can help provide a platform of good gut health. If problems persist — particularly with extreme symptoms — then seek advice from a behaviourist and a veterinary professional.
Over £21,000 of crucial funds raised for struggling dog rescues by the Agria Dog Walk

ogs waiting for their forever homes have received a significant boost this autumn, thanks to the Agria Dog Walk. The nationwide event ran throughout September and saw dog-lovers join forces with Agria Pet Insurance to raise an incredible £21,145 for small local dog rescues and larger charities. Hundreds of dog owners took part in the month-long virtual event, walking and donating to dog rescues across the UK. Individual donations topped an incredible £10,000, which Agria Pet Insurance matched, enabling the total fundraising generated to reach such an amazing amount. Rescues have reported a continued increase in dogs and puppies coming into their care since the start of the pandemic
dog rescue partners, that shockingly revealed over half of dogs handed into rescues are currently younger than two years old. Many are suffering from behavioural issues. The rescues surveyed also reported a continuing increase in dogs and puppies coming into their care since the start of the pandemic, resulting in over three-quarters of dog rescues currently almost or totally full. Lizzy Brown from nationwide breed rescue, German Shepherd Rescue Elite, (GSRE), commented on the devastating impact that continues from pandemic puppy buying: “Donations are so greatly needed at present whilst we suffer the onslaught of the lockdown dog dump. Sadly, we knew this would come and are currently overwhelmed with intakes. “Running costs are going to remain high for a good while now as many of these youngsters have not received any socialisation or training, so will be with us while we turn them around. Sadly, there are not so many homes out there willing to take on a rescue dog with issues and work through them. GSRE would like to say a massive thank you 24 | Total Grooming Magazine
to everyone that took part in the Agria Dog Walk, and Agria Pet Insurance, for their generous donations.” Vicki Wentworth, Managing Director at Agria Pet Insurance, said, “We are astounded by the incredible generosity shown by dog owners across the UK, and their dedication to helping dogs less fortunate than their own. As our Rehoming team sees first-hand, the situation in animal rescues is extremely tough, both for dogs needing homes and the amazing individuals who take care of them. “Our goal with the Agria Dog Walk was to make a difference, but we never expected to raise such a significant
amount. Thank you to everyone, and their very special dogs, whose kindness will have a huge impact.” Agria Pet Insurance Ltd is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, Financial Services Register Number 496160. Add Cat Grooming to Your Salon Offer Sarah Mackay and Fern Gresty - the iPET Network – explore Feline Asian Fusion
W
e all know that dog grooming can serve a number of purposes, and improve the welfare of the dog, besides making them look fabulous or ready to show. A third purpose too, is the ability for the groomer to have a good look, and often spot skin problems and other ailments that may not have been picked up until that point. The rise and popularity of styles such as Asian Fusion have proved that not only does our UK grooming industry have the skills, but there is also real demand for high-end cuts. Potentially more than ever. But what of the cats? Well of course there are big differences, but that doesn’t mean that cats don’t get to look wonderful too. And what about styles? Just like grooming there are plenty of ways to style a cat, just as there are plenty of breeds and coat types. With cat grooming, many people don’t bring their pets to the salon unless there is matting, which means that for many cat clients, more practical styles such as the belly shave or comb cut are the most appropriate. This has been adapted to majestic effect with the lion cut, which retains the welfare benefits, but leaves a ‘mane’ and tufted tail on a longer-furred puss. Asian Fusion has also entered into the cat grooming world, with some types of cats being able to sport a teddy bear cut, with its characteristic round face and styled paws. A quick search online will of course

showcase some outlandish designs; butterflies shaved into fur and dragon’s spines so it is clear that, just like in the world of dog grooming there is no limit to creativity, when you have a relaxed animal to work on. And relaxed is the operative word, because welfare is, and always should be top priority. Wendy Payton has been grooming cats since 1991, and tutors cat groomers of the future at Four Paws Cheshire. She said: “Every cat is different and they all have different tolerance levels. Some people see things on YouTube and ask for that on their cat, and the answer almost every time is ‘no’. “You have to think about what is practical and fair for the cat, sometimes it is about educating owners too, and promoting the natural beauty of the cats. “Cats are sensitive, but if you take your cat to the groomers on a regular basis and they are used to being handled they may tolerate a different kind of groom. But most cats that we see in our grooming room are welfare grooms, and that is essentially what we feel we are here for. The welfare of the cat.” Sarah Mackay and Fern Gresty, iPET Network

Preparing your Salon for the Festive Season Top Groomer and Christies Direct Ambassador, Kayla Harrison, looks at how you can prepare ahead and maximise festive salon opportunities.
C
hristmas is the busiest time of the year for many and especially dog groomers, as everyone is keen to ensure their dog is looking tidy for family visits over the festive period. And I totally understand, as even my dogs get a preChristmas groom on Christmas Eve! It is so important that while we work hard making our customers’ dogs look lovely for Christmas, we also ensure that we are keeping ourselves healthy and maximising our profits to enable us business owners, to also enjoy a muchdeserved rest over Christmas. In this festive article, I will cover how I get ready in my salon for the big rush, what products we use and how we make enough money to enable us to close for a Christmas break! Let’s get ready to dance around that Christmas tree this year instead of being totally and utterly burnt out. Remember: Work smarter not harder. Here are my top tips to ensure good wellbeing at this busy time of the year.
Offer a Christmas Spa Package Having spa packages for special occasions is a must. We do a mixture of packages in our salon but our most popular at this time of year is ‘Santa Paws’. This includes teeth cleaning, a Groom Professional Christmas fragrance, paw balm, a festive bandana, and a festive-themed photograph, which we share on our social media. Our customers love the package and to be honest, I think some buy it just for the festive photo at the end! We have had 30 | Total Grooming Magazine

clients come to us just for the ‘Santa Paws’ package and they are happy to buy this as an extra on top of their normal groom. It doesn’t cost us much so has a good profit margin and we just love pampering the dogs and giving them a special Christmas treat.
Be Selective with your PreChristmas Appointments To be fair to our 4 to 6 weekly regulars we offer them priority appointments over our once-a-year visitors and new customers during the lead up to Christmas. This means our regulars
are happy as they have a pre-Christmas groom, and it also means we have regular dogs in, who are used to the grooming process, and that are usually still in good shape from the previous groom.
Offer a Premium Day If you’re like me and struggle to say ‘No’ then this works wonders and offers your less-regular customers, the opportunity to book in with you in December. Once I have filled my diary with regulars (usually by midNovember) I offer a Premium

Day. It’s a Saturday or Sunday that I would not usually work, and appointments are charged at time and a half. For our once-a-year customers this offers them the option to have their dog groomed before Christmas once we are fully booked, but they pay extra for an appointment on this special Premium Day.
Look After Yourself Groomer health is so important at this time of the year, and more than ever with the soaring number of puppies around, so it’s important to look after yourself remember your worth. I know many of us are guilty of living off the coffee and chocolate diet when we are busy, but meal planning to ensure you have a healthy diet will boost energy levels and help you avoid burnout. It’s also important to schedule in some exercise, I find it helps me wind down after a day in the salon or gears me up for a busy day. It’s great for physical and mental health. If you work as part of a team, why not plan a staff Christmas party in November before you get too busy. This will boost team morale and ensure your team can blow off some steam before getting stuck into a busy festive period. Team morale is important as without a good team you cannot run a successful salon.
Offer Mini Grooms Our last day before Christmas is 23rd December, and we only offer mini grooms and ‘bath and brush’ appointments on this day. We get takeout pizza and really LOVE our last day. We are never stressed, never overworked, and get to see all our regular fluffies before we break for Christmas.
Charge Your Worth Charging your worth is something I am still so passionate about. There is no glory in burning yourself out to please clients, they would not do the same for you, so you should 100% price your services correctly and enjoy doing fewer dogs per day and protecting that body that you need to work. Again – work smarter, not harder. 32 | Total Grooming Magazine
Good Equipment is Key Good quality equipment will make your job easier. By using better quality equipment, you will be able to groom more quickly and efficiently. Since upgrading my equipment 3 years after opening my salon I really noticed improvements in my drying time, quality of prep, the quality and speed of my scissoring, and the overall quality of my grooms. I cannot wait to press play on our Christmas playlist this year and dance around my super tall Groom Professional Everest table this year! I am 5ft 11 and it’ll be my first year using a grooming table that is the right height for me, so I am very excited not to have backache for Christmas this year!
Let’s talk products I love trying new products! One of my favourite things to do is flip through the Christies Direct catalogue and make
my little dog grooming Christmas wish list. In the lead up to Christmas, I really enjoy getting the fragranced shampoos to add into our spa packages and I often get a set of bows, make my own festive bandanas, and invest in some festive scented products for our salon to make sure it has a Christmas feel! If you haven’t tried the products below, I would highly recommend putting them on your Christmas list!
Spare a Thought for the Golden Oldies Lots of mature dogs who end up in rescue through no fault of their own are overlooked in favour of young dogs, but golden oldies still have a lot to give:
A
10 year-old Collie named Marley has been in the care of Battersea for 100 days, but so far no one has stepped forward to give him a home to call his own. Marley’s owners brought him into Battersea when a change in circumstances meant that they were no longer able to look after him. Despite being at the rehoming charity for nearly three times the average stay (34 days), he has struggled to find a retirement home; something that staff suspect may be due to his age. Rebecca Lodder, Rehoming and Welfare Manager at Battersea said: “Marley may be in the twilight years of his life, but he’s still got so much life left to give and loves nothing more than playing fetch with his with his favourite people before settling down for a good cuddle. However, despite being so active still, Marley has continuously been turned down by potential owners because of his age. “Marley doesn’t have many years ahead of him, so we’re really hoping someone will soon come forward and enjoy the time that he does have left. Sadly, many people overlook older dogs in favour of youngsters, but older dogs like Marley have a lifetime of love to give someone; they just need someone to give them a chance.” Being in his golden years, Marley likes to have all of your attention to himself and so is really looking to be the only dog in his future household. He’d also like his retirement home to be an adult only environment with a nice garden for him to play with his beloved
34 | Total Grooming Magazine
Marley is a great dog who has been overlooked because of his age. He is one of Battersea’s longest residents - with over 100 days at the rehoming centre
tennis balls. Rebecca continues: “Throughout the pandemic many people have preferred to rehome puppies and younger dogs, but often forget how much time, training and exercise younger dogs need. Older dogs, like Marley, likely already have some training in place and while many still have a lot of get-upand-go, older dogs can require less exercise making them a lot less work for a new owner which may come in handy now that lockdown has lifted and
life is a bit more normal. “The saying goes that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but here at Battersea we know that a dog’s age is all part of their unique character. Marley is such a huge personality here at Battersea, with such a passion for life, and we’re all hoping that someone will soon give him the chance that he deserves.” If you’d like to give Marley a home, or to find out more about other golden oldies, please visit www.battersea.org.uk.

Keep Calm and Carry On Jitka Krizova looks at ways groomers can calm dogs in the salon or, if owners are looking to calm their dog at home during the excitement of the festive season:
I
’m often asked whether to buy Calming Floral Spray or Comfort Blend and my standard reply is to ask what the problem or issue is. Both products are calming and relaxing but they aren’t the same. Some of the essential oils I’ve used are the same but most of them are different and have different therapeutic properties and benefits. Basically, one size doesn’t fit all. So which product should you use – Calming Floral Spray or Comfort Blend?
38 | Total Grooming Magazine
My brief explanation of both products comes down to this. Calming Floral Spray is calming and uplifting and Comfort Blend is calming, relaxing and more sedating. In stressful situations, I’d recommend that we use Calming Spray.
Stress We’re all talking about stress and stressing about stress, but what is it actually? Stress is defined as a negative differential between a series of demands and the ability to cope with them.
Simply said, if we, or our dog, are put out of our comfort zone, stress will quickly appear. Not all stress is bad, however. Some stress is necessary for personal growth, development of successful coping tactics.
Demands & stressors Calming Floral Spray aids in coping with these demands in a natural way. For example, if you want your puppy to get used to the car. If you just put the puppy in a crate or on the back seat, shut the door and then drive

for half an hour your puppy will more than likely cry, drool, shake and even get sick or maybe pee and poo. Don’t you think that there’s too many demands, too much pressure, noise and motion perhaps? A bit much, isn’t it? After an experience like this, how would the puppy feel when approaching the car next time? Stressed, right? Other stressors in your dog’s life can be visits to the vets, groomers, fireworks. Stress is a response to a specific stressor, in this case, the car journey, and stress typically goes away when the stressor disappears. The opposite should now happen when you train your puppy to be relaxed in the car and eventually he/she will enjoy the journeys, especially when something special is waiting for him, like a walk on the beach or in the woods. Essential oils that are useful when it comes to stress (and that are safe for dogs too) are: • Petitgrain • Roman chamomile • Lavender • Sweet orange and • Ylang-ylang And guess what?! You can find them all in Calming Floral Spray.
Why not just one oil then? Not because more is better, but because well-chosen essential oils work together in harmony and synergy. They interact together and the combined effect is greater than the sum of their separate effects.
Anxiety I designed the Comfort Blend specifically for separation anxiety, however, it also works for doggy dementia and grief, etc. Anxiety has no identifiable root and sometimes we have to dig deep to find the cause (which is not always successful). It tends to stick around for longer than stress, and it’s more difficult to treat. It’s an uncomfortable inner feeling of fear, worry, nervousness or unease about something with an uncertain outcome. We’ve all experienced anxiety at some point in our lives… it’s a normal human 40 | Total Grooming Magazine
reaction to some stress, disaster or bad luck, however, some people are constantly anxious to the point where it’s abnormal and interferes with their life.
Now, what about dogs? A reaction to a short-term, active stressor like an unexpected bang is normal but when those behaviours become routine, they may become… you guessed it… anxiety.
Signs of anxiety in dogs are: • Dilated pupils • Panting and trembling • Pacing and fidgeting • Whining • Avoidance of eye contact • Hiding, shutting down and avoiding interaction Comfort Blend, with useful oils for anxiety such as neroli, bergamot, basil, and ylang-ylang, helps in many of these cases and can bring dogs like this peace and help them to relax.
Work on a dog’s coping skills Can you see why it’s important to work
on a dog’s coping skills from an early age? Perhaps leave her alone for a short period of time, play a bit of loud music here and there, drop something on the floor, take your puppy to as many different places as you can and expose them to as many different situations as you can. A well-adjusted dog finds his home safe and usually a stress-free environment. Just like many other animals dogs will scan the environment for potential threats and if there aren’t any, he’ll relax. If you find that your dog is doing this excessively or seems to be alert all the time, anxiety might be the cause. An anxious dog might be unable to sit still or relax and it’s really hard to watch. The relaxing and sedating properties of the blend helps those who are emotionally intense and even agitated. Ylang-ylang, which is found in the blend, is known for its ability to slow rapid heartbeat and breathing down which are symptoms associated with anxiety. We will look at other solutions in future articles.

Take the next step in your grooming career with the higher diploma by Vicky Skinner, Head of Education, National Pet College
T
he Higher Diploma is the next step for dog groomers holding a level 3 diploma. The course focuses on perfecting grooming skills, techniques and finishes as well as developing knowledge to maximise the welfare of the dogs. Raising standards in the industry and improving animal welfare – as well as lifelong learning and continuing professional development – is something the National Pet College is passionate about, so the prestigious Higher Diploma is self-taught over ten modules, is independently assessed and for those who pass all the practical and theory modules, leads to an invitation to join the prestigious Guild of Master Groomers – the pinnacle of achievement in dog grooming. Industry experts developed the Higher Diploma, which is supported by the Pet Industry Federation (PIF). Challenging but immensely satisfying, the Higher Diploma is for experienced dog groomers who wish to develop their clipping, scissoring and hand stripping skills and knowledge to the highest standards. Learners will research and enhance their knowledge and application of breed standards and be able to demonstrate this in their practical grooming to produce flawless, balanced finishes. The theory units also include business management, animal welfare and the ability to carry out independent research – essential skills for the ambitious groomer. But don’t just take our word for it – Eve Somers and Kelly Davis are both qualified with the Higher Diploma, members of the Guild of Master

It is hard work but the required research, practice and examinations will test both your practical and theory abilities over a wide range of areas, and the rewards in self-confidence and achievement are immense and are invaluable assets to yourself and the grooming industry.” Kelly Davis of KD Grooming Studio said: “I enrolled on the Higher Diploma with the National Pet College, many moons ago because I enjoy challenging myself to become the best at my trade. Such a great course if you would like to gain a deeper understanding about breed standards and elevate your
creative eye. This course is challenging but if you work hard, like me, you too can become a Master Groomer!” Offered to learners on a flexible basis, so they can learn at their own pace within a 4-year time frame, the Higher Diploma is still the same model and standard that was available previously as a PIF qualification, but is now offered through the National Pet College. their families has however been met with criticism, with many being given to animal shelters when owners realise that they can’t care for them. While it is positive that more families are seeking pets and keeping them, there are those that are rejected and end up in an
animal shelter, where it might be harder for them to be rehomed due to a higher demand for puppies. Many owners believed they were prepared to be a dog parent but weren’t actually aware of the responsibilities having a dog brings.
Here, we explore the issues dog owners have had, so you can be informed and decide whether you have the resources and time to buy or adopt a dog as well as answer any questions to may have about your own. After all, giving up a dog can be emotionally, so these considerations shouldn’t be taken lightly.
Barking and loneliness We looked at Google search data from January 2020 to December 2020 to find out what dog owners were searching for the most online. The searches with the highest average monthly search volume were “dog barking”, “dog separation anxiety”, “dog noise”, “dog anxiety”, and “stop dog barking” with 27,100, 6,600, 5,400, 4,400, and 4,400 searches respectively. All dogs bark, this is normal – when dogs bark, it can be their way of communicating with us. They might be trying to tell us that they’re hungry or thirsty, are feeling lonely, or need to go to the toilet. Understanding the different types of dog barks will let us know whether our dog is being a nuisance or needs something in particular. If your dog is barking excessively, the first step is understanding why. 1. Prolonged, non-stop barking, with intervals in between can signal loneliness and feeling unhappy 2. One single yelp or a high-pitched bark can signal unexpected pain 3. A series of yelps or high-pitched barks can signal fear or pain If you’re getting reports from neighbours that your dog is barking a lot when you’re out, this is a sign of separation anxiety. They will also pace, act out repetitive behaviour, destroy things in the house, and will go to the toilet in the house. However, you don’t see this because it occurs when you’re out. To find out if your dog has separation anxiety, you could set up a camera to monitor your dog’s behaviour. If your dog displays these symptoms, it’s a sign that they’re struggling being left alone so much, so you need to 48 | Total Grooming Magazine
avoid leaving them alone so frequently and so long.

Going Mobile…

Grooming Van of the Year
The Portable Palace Created from our Revolutionary insulated panel, the Palace provides groomers with unrivalled benefits never seen before in the industry! This amazing new concept was born due to our lining's incredible lifespan - they often out live the vans they were placed in - so we created a demountable pod where your business can be moved on to the next chassis easily when needed - or if you no longer wish to be mobile, you can demount the pod and work from your garden!
• • • • • • • •
As the chassis ages, the Palace can be removed and placed onto a brand new chassis - resulting in a much cheaper cost than having to buy a whole new van and conversion with next to no downtime If the chassis is involved in an accident or breaks down you can simply remove the body, place it on the ground and work from your driveway whilst you wait for it to be repaired. The lining will not out live the vehicle like so often seen with used van conversions. You then have to sell the van & conversion and then buy a new van and conversion and wait whilst it is converted. Whereas with the Palace, you can keep the pod forever and change the chassis as you need to. Once you choose to retire from mobile grooming you can remove the Palace, sell the chassis and work from the Palace in your garden instead of having to buy a parlour or convert a room in your house. When you choose to move home, you can take the pod with you and this portability combined with the size means they will not normally require planning permission in your garden. You never need to buy a Brand new chassis that can depreciate - simply buy used a chassis and then swap them out as they get too old. Smaller than its LWB Van equivalent but provides a more workable space inside that is highly customisable as there are no van strutts or vehicle constraints Can be driven on a normal car driving license Say goodbye to having to buy a whole new van and conversion every few years - simply move your Palace from one chassis to another with zero down time and when the time comes and you no longer want to be mobile, simply
