WELCOME TO THE JUNE ISSUE OF TODAY’S BOAT!
L
ast weekend, people of the UK strung up their union jack bunting and took to the streets for the royal wedding festivities. Roars could be heard from local pubs as the FA Cup final played on the big screen and boating and watersports enthusiasts headed to the water for a taste of the sunshine to come. But with the Summer boating season quickly approaching, safety must be prioritised. Today’s Boat readers are encouraged to keep up-to-date with safety regulations and requirements, including the latest Marine Guidance Notes, published by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). We caught up with Chris Feibusch from WesCom Signal and Rescue to learn more about pyrotechnic flares. These universally recognised marine distress signals have been saving lives at sea for more than a century.

Within our popular Expert’s View column, we check in with the YDSA, ABYA and RYA. The Green Blue, a joint environmental programme created by the RYA and British Marine, has welcomed the news of a new UK bottle and can deposit scheme, likely to be in place by the end of this Parliament. You can find out more about the scheme, alongside information on how we can help to protect our oceans on page 12. What exactly do you need to know when buying a boat? Andrew Hyland, Director of Why Boats, one of the UK’s largest and most flexible Yacht Brokerages, offers some valuable advice on the process. Later on in the issue, we take a look at Cloud 9, a stunning family yacht with a relaxed, beachy interior by Winch Design, as well as some exciting new builds. Enjoy the June issue!

LONDON BOAT SHOW 2019 ON HOLD
B
ritish Marine, which organises and owns the London Boat Show, has announced that the 2019 Show, due to run at ExCeL London from 9-13 January 2019, will not take place. This decision was made after independent research by exhibition experts, Zing Insights, showed there was insufficient support from a large proportion of the marine industry to the London Boat Show with its current format, duration and location. “The decision to put the London Boat Show on hold is naturally very disappointing for the British marine industry,” said David Pougher, President of British Marine, “but British Marine and its Board of Directors has a responsibility to its members and we cannot commit
to running a Show which is clearly forecasted in its current format to be commercially unviable and will not meet customer satisfaction levels. By contrast, TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show produces a positive contribution to the industry, is well supported by exhibitors and visitors alike and is a highly successful event and we are now able to put all our energy, expertise and enthusiasm into this event.” British Marine says making the decision to put the London Boat Show on hold now for 2019 enables the organisation to look at alternative options. “We are very aware that many companies in the marine industry look at a sales activity such as the London Boat Show in January as an excellent way to kick start the year, but times change
and we must do the same in order to offer events which are affordable, accessible, welcomed and supported by the industry and its customers, and are financially viable for all involved. This is now the task for the British Marine team, its Board, its members and valued advisors to seek new opportunities to support our industry,” concluded David Pougher.

he fleet of timelessly gorgeous yachts will do battle in a series of extremely technical and demanding races, with both wind conditions and changeable tides testing the crews’ skills to the limits. The Solent races are absolutely unique, thanks to the historic backdrop provided by this corner of sailing heaven and the exceptional technical standard of the participants. The six-race series, organised by the Royal Yacht Squadron, delivers quality and varied courses that keep many competitors entering year after year. The Nab Tower race will be a new addition to this year’s regatta, taking the fleet east from the Squadron line to the Nab Tower, then back towards Lymington Bank before finishing at the Royal Yacht Squadron. The new race is scheduled to take place on Monday 16th July. Racing is an important part of the regatta, but it is by no means the sole focus. The event is famous for its camaraderie on and off the water, bringing together classic yachts and enthusiasts from across the UK and Europe, and from as far afield as Australia. The nature of Cowes makes it the perfect location for spectators to enjoy the action; with fabulous viewpoints over the water, to a host of bars and shops, regatta week has something for everyone.

The regatta promises to be a glorious week on the water with a full and diverse programme and line starts and finishes that will provide pictureperfect moments for competitors and spectators alike as the yachts gather together. A daily programme of ‘cruise in company’ events sees the cruising fleet sailing to a variety of beautiful locations including Bucklers Hard at Beaulieu and Newtown Creek on the Isle of Wight. The British Classic Yacht Club’s motto is Per Ardua ad Marum (Through hard work to the Seas) and after seeing these yachts up close, it is not hard to appreciate why. Most of the British classic yachts are privately owned, meaning that for many, their upkeep is purely down to the devotion of their owners and crew. With such a rich heritage of classic yachts being built and sailed on Britain’s coastal

he island’s largest boat show, featuring yachts, activities and demonstrations on water, as well as recreational fishing products, was completed with remarkable success on Sunday 6th of May. Limassol Boat Show, which took place at Limassol Marina from the 3rd to the 6th of May 2018, hosted more than 120 exhibitors from eight different countries and presented more than ten seminars, live water demonstrations and hundreds of products, marking a record attendance that exceeded 25,000 visitors. As far as the organisers are concerned, Mr Aristos Aristidou, Director of Dacor Advertising & Media Ltd, stated: “We are delighted that both visitors and exhibitors expressed their satisfaction and
enthusiasm for this year’s event. We made a huge collective effort with Limassol Marina’s management and personnel, and I do believe that we have achieved the desired effect. This boat show has made a major leap forward, paving the way for international recognition, thus responding to its initial objective. For this reason, we would like to thank all of our sponsors, exhibitors and visitors.”
Following the successful completion of Limassol Boat Show 2018, the organisers and many exhibitors have already started planning Limassol Boat Show 2019, which will take place from the 9th to the 12th of May 2019. For next year, the organisers have already set a new objective: a greater and upgraded edition of Limassol Boat Show.

NEW UK BOTTLE & CAN DEPOSIT SCHEME
THE RYA AND THE GREEN BLUE HAVE WELCOMED THE NEWS THAT A BOTTLE DEPOSIT SCHEME WILL BE INTRODUCED IN ENGLAND IN A BID TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF SINGLE USE WASTE REACHING OUR SEAS.
A
deposit return scheme for single-use bottles is going to be introduced in England, the Government has confirmed. Plastic, glass and metal containers would be included in the scheme with a goal of increasing recycling rates and slashing the amount of waste polluting the planet. Last month, on behalf of a coalition of
water-based organisations including the RYA, marine environment charity, Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) wrote to Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, calling for the urgent introduction of the scheme. A consultation held later this year will examine the details of how such a scheme would work, but it is likely to be in place by the end of this Parliament. UK consumers use an estimated
13 billion plastic drinks bottles a year, but more than three billion are incinerated, sent to landfill sites or left to pollute the country’s streets, countryside and seas. Plastic impacts on entire ecosystems and marine life gets caught up in it, eats it and lives in it. It also has a direct impact on our health, acting as a sponge for toxins which can end up in our food. Plastic is cheap and incredibly versatile with properties that make it ideal for many applications. However, these qualities have also resulted in it becoming an environmental issue. We have developed a ‘disposable’ lifestyle and it is estimated that around 50% of plastic is used once, then thrown away. There’s no doubt that plastic pollution in the ocean is a growing global crisis and campaigns such as Sky Ocean Rescue, eXXpedition (the team that sailed around the British Isles sampling the waters for plastics and toxins), and the BBC series Blue Planet II have all recently highlighted the scale of the issue. “We can be in no doubt that plastic is wreaking havoc on our marine environment – killing dolphins, choking turtles and degrading our most precious habitats,” said Environment Secretary Michael Gove.

minimise the impact they have on the environment and safeguard the waters and habitats we enjoy and rely on for the future.”
The announcement follows the Government’s ban on plastic microbeads and the introduction of a 5p plastic bag charge. In the ensuing months, Commonwealth members will gather in London to agree measures how to further protect the world’s oceans.
The plastic waste tide we are faced with is not only obvious for us as boaters to clearly see washed up on shore or whilst at sea. Most disconcertingly, the overwhelming amount of marine plastic debris is beyond visual, made of microscopic range fragmented plastic debris that cannot be just scooped out of the ocean.

THE DANGERS OF VERBALISING CONCLUSIONS

part for those sharing an office, being a surveyor is usually a solitary occupation requiring specific and not readily acquirable skills. It’s not that surveyors lack being surrounded by persons or that we lack social skills, it’s solitary because all the decisions have to be taken silently and in solitude. The lack of peer group presence triggers this condition, leaving all the decision-making to grow from within. It’s difficult to bounce an idea, to think out loud, to consider options, to share the knowledge bank of peers and benefit from the experience of others. All too often during Pre-Purchase surveys the Broker, the buyer and the seller, all with opposing interests, will be trying to pry information while the surveyor is in the process of investigating the vessel and exercising judgment to draw conclusions. It is at this point when the surveyor is most venerable to verbalising judgment. After all, it is only human to think out loud. Verbalising judgment, however, leads to a number of misunderstandings, friction, discontent and in the end,

Now one of the leading brokerage firms in the UK, the expert team take great pride in what they do and are dedicated to helping clients find the perfect boat for their needs. ANDREW HYLAND’S ADVICE ON BUYING A BOAT “When considering purchasing a boat, you must first decide which type of boat best suits your requirements. If it is a yacht, consider whether you are cruising, racing or both – coastal cruising, crossing the channel or even the Atlantic. Consider the family and how many people you are likely to have on board.
the vendor is documented as the owner. • There is evidence that the boat is a VAT paid vessel. This is typically done by the vendor or broker. • There are no liens or loans on the vessel. Again, this is something that a reputable broker would do before completion. If there is a loan, make sure the debt is paid off on taking ownership. This will be done by the broker by paying directly to the lender part of your funds deposited into their client account before paying the vendor the balance.
Once you have decided on the type and model and budget, arrange to see as many boats as possible. They often vary in equipment levels and conditions. Then it’s time to make an offer. Unless the vendor or broker has made it clear that only the asking price is acceptable, always try to negotiate. It is worthwhile making the offer subject to survey and sea trial. This will give you the right to have the boat fully inspected and tested before completing the sale. Make sure you have a proper sale and purchase agreement reflecting your offer. If using a broker, they will either use a standard agreement from with British Marine (BM) or the Association of brokers and Yacht Agents (ABYA).
There are many pitfalls and hurdles in the buying process, remember every yacht is the vendors pride and joy and will have spent many days and years enjoying life on the water in her. Be friendly and polite throughout, even when faced with some surprises on the survey. A good broker will be able to help both you and the vendor find a way through most difficulties.”
You must check that the paperwork is correct. If you are buying through a reputable broker, then they will be doing this on your behalf but always make sure:
Visit www.whyboats.com to find out more.
• There is clear title to the boat and FOUNDERS ANDREW HYLAND AND IAN WATKINS

Once you have done this, establish a budget for purchasing the boat. It is best to add up to £1,000 for buying expenses such as a survey – then stick to your budget. I would always recommend speaking to an experienced and well qualified broker who understands your requirements. They should be able to make recommendations to the type of boat you might find suitable. Brokers will often do this even if they haven’t got a suitable boat on their books at the current time. Why Boats are always able to do this and even try to find the right boat for you elsewhere. WWW.TODAYS-BOAT.COM | 01795 509111|

THE BUSINESS OF SAFETY THE SIGHT OF A RED PYROTECHNIC FLARE ILLUMINATING THE SKY IS THE MOST UNIVERSALLY RECOGNISED SIGNAL INDICATING DISTRESS OFFSHORE. IT HAS BEEN SAVING LIVES AT SEA FOR MORE THAN A CENTURY. WE SPEAK TO CHRIS FEIBUSCH, DIRECTOR OF GLOBAL MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS AT WESCOM SIGNAL AND RESCUE, ABOUT THE PROCUREMENT PROCESS OF PYROTECHNIC FLARES.
M
ore than 100 years ago, Safety Of Lives At Sea (SOLAS) regulations were put in place as a result of many accidents and emergencies at sea. It therefore became a health and safety requirement for certain life-saving appliances to be carried on board commercial ships, including pyrotechnic distress signals, when making journeys, travelling overseas or carrying passengers. There are many different types of pyrotechnic flares, each having different functions designed to suit specific emergency situations, or to initiate a particular action. For
example, the Red Parachute Rocket is a long-range signalling device with a 30,000 candela red flare suspended on a parachute deployed at an altitude of 300m. It will burn for a minimum of 40 seconds as it descends at a controlled rate of no more than 5m/s. Red Handheld flares and Orange Smoke signals function as distress alerting signals, as well as being one of the most effective ways of pinpointing a position during a search and rescue operation. Parachute illuminating rocket flares are used extensively by search and rescue organisations at night or for collision warning. Over the years, safety technology has WWW.TODAYS-BOAT.COM | 01795 509111|
evolved, including many advances in pyrotechnics. Modern flares are smaller, they burn more efficiently and have less explosive content, making them ever more reliable and easier to use, whilst still operating to the same performance standards mandated within the SOLAS regulations. Every liferaft and lifeboat requires six red handflares and WesCom Signal and Rescue estimates that there are around 450,000 liferafts in service requiring commercial SOLAS pyrotechnics in around 110,000 vessels. Pyrotechnics are also mandatory safety equipment on other commercial vessels, and in some @TODAYS-BOAT |

26 : SAFETY countries, it is also mandatory for recreational boaters to carry certain pyrotechnics – for example, the USA, Australia, France, Italy, Spain and Finland. Ensuring marine pyrotechnics are available in major ports around the world requires a robust administration and shipping process, alongside the most stringent safety and transportation systems. It requires a global network of trusted and experienced distributors who have in-depth knowledge of their market and customer needs, to keep up production levels at all times of the year and ensure that Pains Wessex and Comet tick the boxes – from shore to ship and back again.
The transportation of Pains Wessex and Comet products by road, air and sea, is strictly regulated. In Europe, it is operated under the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR), a 1957 United Nations treaty that governs transnational transport of hazardous materials.
container shipping. However, very few airlines and sea freight carriers accept dangerous goods cargo, so it can be challenging to secure freight availability. In addition, the distributor must have an import licence and approved storage facility. Local transportation usually needs to be in specialist or approved vehicles with trained and qualified drivers.
Director of Global Marketing and Communications at WesCom Signal and Rescue, Chris Feibusch, says, “Safety, quality, and reliability are a given. We choose the simplest possible route to market so it is faster for the end-user. Our global network of distributors know their markets and are skilled in ordering in good time through safe and secure transportation methods.”
Chris explains, “Our logistics time is constantly changing and our distributors have to have their finger on the pulse, as we deliver fresh product all around the world. This means that our distributors often have to have a crystal ball to forecast demand up to four months ahead, which includes a four-to-six-week manufacturing lead-time and up to eight weeks transit time. This is the big challenge within our business and why global availability, whilst being vital to our success, is incredibly challenging to achieve.”
Further afield, shipments are carried by air, using cargo planes, or across the sea through
All Pains Wessex and Comet products are made to order and have a manufacturing and expiry date marked on them. Therefore, holding stock is not an option, as they would have a reduced service life even before being shipped. WesCom Signal and Rescue has historically been committed to understanding its role in facilitating safety on vessels and where that fits with vessel purchasing systems. However, this dedication to ensuring safety is not echoed throughout the industry. There are problems with counterfeit products and resellers who attempt to change the expiry dates on the LOT Number. Mr Feibusch reiterates the problems caused by counterfeit and inferior marine distress signals. He adds, “It is vital that clients understand that the cost of purchasing market-leading products is nothing compared with the cost if things go wrong during emergencies

SAFETY : 27 on the water with lower-quality marine distress signal brands.” Re-dating has been a particular problem in India. Fakes can be sophisticated and not always easy to spot, explains Chris. “We have seen products where they have almost exactly copied our label printing capability and completely re-labelled over the top of an old one. They call it ‘spurious pyroing’ in India and I’m sure it goes on in other areas as well. We have been sent images by customers asking if a product is authentic and we can cross reference the lot numbers to confirm or not. Sometimes it is obviously wrong because it is a product that we have not produced for a number of years.” The correct emergency equipment should be stored in an obvious place and should be working efficiently in date and regularly tested. At the forefront of everything WesCom Signal and Rescue does, is saving lives, and changing these lifesaving devices and cutting corners with regulations puts lives at risk. That is why it is vital that clients purchase products from approved distributors to make sure that they receive the correct manuals, labels and documentation. Aside from the moral issues, ultimately, in the event that something goes wrong, those involved with these illegal practices could be held accountable, leading to compensation claims, heavy fines or jail. WesCom Signal and Rescue is the world’s leading marine distress signal manufacturer, with the largest international network of distributors. Its comprehensive range of marine distress signals and safety systems are trusted for their reliability by the world’s navies, lifeboat and rescue services, merchant fleets and airlines, as well as by fishing vessels and leisure crafts. As an initial response to this brief, a complete collection of interior visuals were shown to the client, with every cushion and feature presented. All of the necessary requirements were thought of, with the need to be: child friendly, accommodate teaching staff and have additional relaxation areas (spas for parents and cinema and entertainment rooms for children). This meant that the interior design had to include no sharp corners or angles. Throughout the whole process there was a consistency to make sure Cloud 9 had a fresh, relaxed ambience which fitted in with a versatile lifestyle. To create a relaxed, contemporary beach theme, sand tones, vibrant blues and treasure troves of decorative shells are prominent throughout. This can be seen right through the interior, which totals in excess of 1000 square metres. Fifty surface materials were used on board which include Brushed Douglas Fir and Limed Oak.

loud 9 is an approachable 74m yacht which marks Winch Design’s first collaboration with the Italian design studio, Zuccon International Project. The interior and exterior guest areas were designed by Winch, suited for both family and business use. The yacht is also available to charter.
The yacht has a beautiful driftwood beach chic feel throughout. This is seen with the main deck area outside the saloon. The sofa in the saloon (and the one on the aft deck) is 1.5 metres deep. It’s a lie down sofa, which is what you want to do when you watch a movie or come up from the swimming pool. Additionally, the entrance lounge was made into a space of waves, creating an interior based around the senses. Winch Design had worked with the client on a previous project, designing the interior and exterior of his former yacht in 2009. It therefore seemed logical for the client to upgrade to a “2017” yacht, with the purpose to create an “on water house”, to travel the world with his family. The client basically handed over the

The ongoing story of the “on- water house” was achieved to give a sense of relaxation. Since completion the owners have been on board for over four months non-stop with two children, a teacher, nanny, guests and the owner’s mother. For them, it’s a home, not just a holiday boat. PEARL YACHTS INTRODUCE THE PEARL 80
P
earl Yachts is introducing a new model in its range: the new Pearl 80. This yacht breaks ground for the yard with impressive manoeuvrability and exceptional comfort. With a length of 24-meter and a 6-meter beam, the new model stands out for the large, luxurious spaces and the outstanding levels of comfort, result of the successful collaboration between naval architect Bill Dixon, who developed the exterior, and designer Kelly Hoppen, in charge of the interior layout. Following a long-term collaboration with the highly acclaimed Dixon Yacht Design, Bill Dixon has once again provided the distinctive exterior styling and hull design for the Pearl 80. Lines are aerodynamic with a huge focus given to both the large windscreen and the three tiers of glazing seen from each side. The generous strip of continuous windows close to the waterline make for an extremely well illuminated lower deck, whilst on the main deck the effect is of a conservatory roof flooding the galley area with light. Seen from the water, the boat is reminiscent of a dart or an arrow, crafted for speed and efficiency. Construction is in vacuum infused GRP and the yacht features a white gel coat finish. Following its exclusive relationship with award winning interior designer, Kelly Hoppen MBE, the Pearl 80 is offered with three alternative interior themes; ‘Studio’, ‘Taupe’ and ‘Luxury’. Clients can expect plenty of variety

Both darker and lighter woods are used to add a sense of visual depth, whilst high-gloss, white lacquered ceilings provide reflection, adding to the sense of spaciousness. N
umarine has unveiled the full details of the hull #1 of the 26XP Series. This compact 26-meter expedition vessel was sold in May 2016 to a returning customer from Turkey, his fourth Numarine boat to date. The first 26XP was launched in February 2018 and underwent extensive and highly successful sea trials ahead of the delivery. Numarine’s long-term collaborator Can Yalman designed the 26XP’s exterior and interior. Naval architecture is by Umberto Tagliavini, another perennial partner of the shipyard. She is very modern, even futuristic, due to angular windows and a vertical bow, and carries the DNA of a larger model, the 32XP, the first of which was launched last summer. Designed to offer the same
capabilities of her longer sisters, the 26XP’s smaller draft allows her to berth in shallow harbours. The
yacht has a well-proven and efficient hull, especially designed for ocean cruising.

M
JM Yachts has announced the introduction of a quad-powered 53-foot yacht for summer 2019. With quad Mercury Verados, it is expected to reach speeds of 50 mph while offering the benefits boaters enjoy from smaller sport boats: shallow draft, easy maintenance, and easy handling around the docks. The Doug Zurn-designed hull has a slippery 3.5-to-1 waterline lengthto-beam ratio for great stability at higher speeds. The new model’s predecessor, the MJM 50z, powered with triple IPS 600’s, has a top speed of 40 knots (46 mph,) considerably quicker than its downeast competition. MJMs are built stronger and lighter by Boston BoatWorks, the leader in advanced epoxy composite construction. The weight savings resulting from this unique design/
build are reinvested by MJM to create a fast outboard-powered cruising yacht over 50 feet which, to date, has only been achieved by smaller boats or big, open center consoles Living spaces are generous and well appointed. Belowdecks, a spacious two-cabin dual master suite layout with ensuite heads is standard. Each

SECOND BUILDER ADDED FOR 1C37 WITH DEMAND SOARING FOR THE NEXT BIG ONE-DESIGN KEELBOAT CLASS, THE NEW YORK YACHT CLUB AND MELGES PERFORMANCE SAILBOATS HAVE LICENSED A SECOND MANUFACTURER FOR THE IC37 BY MELGES.
F
IBRE Mechanics, based in Lymington, England, will join Westerly Marine (Santa Ana, Calif.) as an official builder of the 37foot one-design keelboat designed by Mark Mills to a concept created by the New York Yacht Club. The Club has ordered the first 20 boats for use in the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup and as a member charter fleet. The first IC37 by Melges has undergone sea trials and was christened on Saturday, May 12, at the 31st Commissioning of the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court. “We were cautiously optimistic that this boat would strike a chord with Corinthian sailors around the the world,” says New York Yacht Club Commodore Phil Lotz. “The interest has exceeded our expectations, even before we had a boat for people to test sail. Adding a second builder, in England, will allow us to meet demand more quickly and help us grow the European fleet.” FIBRE Mechanics is a new name in the boatbuilding industry, having formed in late 2016. But the core team of managers and boat builders is comprised of former employees of Green Marine, which built many America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race yachts during a distinguished run as one of the world’s premiere builders

of custom composite yachts. “We are extremely pleased to have been selected to join the IC37 project team,” says Geoff Stock, managing director of FIBRE Mechanics. “The Club’s vision for the class is outstanding, and the work done by Westerly Marine and everyone involved with boat one is truly impressive. Our build teams have over half a million work-hours of experience building high-end racing yachts, including the assembly of the current Volvo Ocean 65 one-design fleet, which will serve us well as we look to deliver a fleet of identical yachts to help build this new class.”

Maintaining the strict one-design characteristics of the burgeoning class will be the top priority for FIBRE Mechanics, which will be building its hull and deck molds from the original plug created by Westerly Marine. The plugs and other associated tooling are currently en route to the FIBRE Mechanics shop in Lymington, with construction of the first boat scheduled to begin by mid-summer. Melges Performance Sailboats is currently taking orders for privatelyowned IC37s, which should be available early in 2019.

berspächer air heaters are independent both of the engine and of the vehicle’s own heat balance. The Airtronic air heater blows warmed dry air into each cabin, using minimal energy with heat outputs from 800W to a mighty 8kW and generally recommended for boats and yachts from 13ft up to 62ft.
Eberspächer’s Hydronic water heater range starts with an output of 2.4kW to a colossal 35kW and works by transferring thermal energy into the boat via a blown air heater matrix unit or a domestic radiator/convector based system. aniamant has released their newest EchoPilot FLS 3D. The new FLS 3D has been upgraded to become the most powerful forward looking sonar in the leisure market at its price level. Forward Looking Sonar is a navigational technology that lets the captain see any underwater dangers in front of his vessel. According to McDougall Insurance, the number one boat insurance claim is hitting an underwater object. Unfamiliar waters, submerged objects, rocks or rock beds – these are all an issue when sailing and with the new FLS 3D you can see the dangers before they hit you. The FLS 3D was developed to make everyday sailing safer for the captain and crew. The FLS 3D has been developed with the patented and groundbreaking technology of Real-Time Forward Looking Sonar. Real-time Forward Looking Sonar is unique to EchoPilot’s patented design. Realtime means that the FLS does not gradually build up the picture like a phased array sonar.
Likewise, if the boat turns to another heading with no target ahead then the FLS screen will immediately show clear water ahead. The sonar display is not historical; it is realtime. www.daniamant.com
Instead the FLS scans the whole forward view and updates the screen several times a second. An obstruction ahead of the boat will show on the screen immediately.
