CIMSA is the result of the committed hearts to create and act towards our nation’s health, following the tagline:

EMPOWERING MEDICAL STUDENTS, IMPROVING NATION’S HEALTH

Moved by Indonesia’s Preamble of The Constitution of The State of the Republic of Indonesia of the year 1945 which states that Indonesia is an independent and sovereign country with the aim to advance public welfare, to educate the life of the nation, and to participate in the execution of world order which is by virtue of freedom, perpetual peace, and social justice, CIMSA was formed to help achieve these goals as we believe two fundamental matters involved are education and health. Thus, medical students are one inseparable part of the nation’s development.

We all have the obligation to build our capacities and abilities, don’t we?

Founded on May 6th 2001, CIMSA held its first General Assembly on May 11th - 13th, 2001. In 2002, CIMSA changed its membership status from individual membership to the establishment of a Local in each university, making it more effective to coordinate and conduct activities. CIMSA grew from 6 locals in 2001, then to 12 locals by the end of 2005 period, 15 locals by the end of 2010 period, and 18 locals by the end of 2015. As of 2021, CIMSA has established in 27 locals, empowering more than 9.000 medical students of Indonesia, and we are still looking forward to all parts of Indonesia.

WE MAKE OUR VOICES HEARD

Shortly after being built, CIMSA established itself as a sustainable activity-based organization up to an international level. CIMSA is officially affiliated with IFMSA with a Letter of Agreement in the year of 2002, stating that CIMSA-ISMKI was the official name of the NMO of Indonesia and that every standing committee was under the auspices of CIMSA, whilst ISMKI was responsible for representing Indonesian medical students’ aspirations in IFMSA.

In 2019, CIMSA officially became the sole representation of Indonesia to IFMSA named as CIMSA Indonesia through the CIMSA-ISMKI Joint Statement. Since 2002, CIMSA has always been nationally and internationally active as an organization . Each year, many of our members, numbered at more than 400, represent Indonesia in international conferences, seminars, workshops, competitions, meetings, working groups, exchanges, and many more.

A handful of international events had been hosted by CIMSA: the Asia Pacific Regional Meeting (APRM) in 2006 at DKI Jakarta; the Asian Collaborative Training on Infectious Disease, Outbreak, Natural Disaster, and Refugee Management (ACTION) at Jakarta in 2009; the General Assembly March Meeting (MM) at DKI Jakarta in 2011; ACTION at Malang in 2011; APRM at Yogyakarta in 2013; and yet another ACTION at Surabaya in 2017. During the 2006-2011 period, CIMSA released a triannual magazine called AORTA, its official website, its social media and mail list, its organization profile, and database of CIMSA alumni. As we went past our first decade, CIMSA was already in a stable position to contribute to tackling health issues leading to CIMSA’s commitment to achieving the Millennium Development Goals in the year 2011. Earlier in 2016, CIMSA supported the 2030 Agenda called Sustainable Development Goals. By 2021, CIMSA has more than 10 policy documents addressing a large variety of topics that are of interest of medical students nationwide including human rights violations and gender discrimination, environmental sustainability, disaster management, communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases, HIV AIDS, maternal health, interprofessional education, bioethics, access to research and research education.

Thousands of activities accumulated from more than 400 activities held each year have been done. Partnering in a national scale, CIMSA has made fruitful collaborations such as the World AIDS Day 2013, SGP Extreme 2014, Thalassemia Project 2014, MADRE 2015, AMOEBA 2020, Ruang PEKA Series 2020, HAZE 2020, and Pekan Peduli Limbah Nasional 2021, to name a few. 1. Indonesia, and UNICEF Indonesia serving as a safe space for supporting mental well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. 6. HAZE 2020 was a collaborative capacity building series by CIMSA together with Vital Strategies held as part of an effort to raise awareness on the air pollution crisis in Indonesia and its correlation with the health aspect.

With the support of Ministry of Agriculture Republic of Indonesia, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Ministry of Health Republic of Indonesia, World Health Organization (WHO), and USAID, CIMSA conducted an event called AMOEBA 2020 to raise antimicrobial awareness through webinar and debate competition.

In the year 2021, hand in hand with Satgas COVID-19 CIMSA conducted a webinar discussing the COVID-19 pandemic face mask waste issues. In international collaboration scale, CIMSA has marked a collaboration with many of other student organizations which are a member of IFMSA national member organizations: IFMSA-Brazil, IFMSA-Morocco, ASEMCOLColombia, FMS Taiwan, IFMSA-Japan, ANEM-Portugal, IMSAIran, Le SOuk-Algeria, IFMSA-Thailand, MSAI-India, and AMSAPhilippines. Utmost important of all activities CIMSA conducted is the essence of medical students’ spirit to serve, help, and express their humanity.
