Saturday, May 7, marks the 142nd running of The Kentucky Derby in Louisville and the first InReturn Derby Party at Greenacres Art Foundation in Indian Hill. InReturn is in Blue Ash and employs people who have suffered a traumatic brain injury in a structured, safe, work and life-skills training environment. The event includes fundraising with a live auction and “Fund-a-Need program during the evening. InReturn development manager Alison Kaufman said this inaugural Derby Party event will benefit ongoing programs at InReturn which help associates reach their individual potential. “The ‘Fund-a-Need’ is specifically going toward a therapist, Kaufman said. “We would like to have a therapist here for the associates. We’re working out details, but we would like to get that fund started. Because of their challenges, they’re trying to process loss in their lives. The celebration is being held on the grounds of the Greenacres Art Foundation which features live horses and a breathtaking landscape. The 142nd run for the roses 2016 Kentucky Derby will be broadcast live. The magic and comedy of Michael Kent from Entertainer of the Year will highlight the evening of fun. There will be a silent auction and a live auction with auctioneer
There are natural wetlands, and there are managed wetlands. The Greenacres Foundation in Indian Hill finds itself faced with the former and eager to make it the latter. The wetland stems from a pond built in the 1950s behind Greenacres’ Spooky Hollow Farm at 8500 Spooky Hollow Road. A dam failed there in the 1970s. “This created a natural wetland, said Carter Randolph, president of the Greenacres Foundation. “Our plan is to convert the natural wetland into a monitored and managed wetland to provide an excellent teaching resource and a natural water purification system. “Wetlands are nature’s best sewer-treatment plants, Randolph said. Randolph said the wetland will cover nearly three-quarters of an acre of land when full, and shrink dramatically to a small wet area in droughts. Water in the wetland will come from a pasture to the west of Spooky Hollow Farm and from the parking lot and roof of Greenacres’ nearby early education facility. The Indian Hill Planning Commission recently agreed to allow the Greenacres Foundation to build viewing docks, boardwalks and a walking path

by the pond behind the farmhouse for educational purposes. “The walkways and observation decks will accommodate very small groups — usually under 10 people at a time- to observe and learn about how a wetland works, from the flow of water through the wetland to the types of plants and how each serves a different cleaning function, Randolph said. “The wetland will have a controlled water exit pipe that will be adjusted seasonally to provide differing water levels in support of the wetland ecosystem. See WETLANDS, Page 2A

Doug Sorrell. Prize for the best “Derby Hat will be voted on and awarded by InReturn Production Associates. “For 10 years we held a golf outing as our main fundraiser, Kaufman said. “We’re incredibly excited about the change. The Derby Party is something new and exciting, something Cincinnati doesn’t typically have; a big Derby celebration.
