This edition is around the people

MJK : We are big fans of the printed word (andany visual thing), and wanted to create a well new type object, that would slot onto your bookcase, sit on the coffee table or be slung into a rucksack. We believe that the interaction and experience that printed material allows is invaluable, and we look to be a permanent fixture on your shelf. Through our ethos we have created a magazine that looks to inspire and explore. In the future we look to expand our brand, but for now we are happy telling stories.@@

It's terribly crowded, yet can be strangely quiet..... (Time 2013)

Aperture Rinko Kawauchi

Kawauchi's themes of family, human interaction with nature and the cycle of life are photographed in pastel colours. her work reveals exquisite delicacy, achieved through sensate compositions, a careful attention to texture and the cultivation of a beautifully clear, clean, often whitish light.(Apurture.2013)

Rinko Kawauchi (born in Shiga, Japan, 1972) studied graphic design and photography at Seian Junior college of Art and Design.

In 2001, Rinko Kawauchi launched her career with the simultaneous publication of three astonishing photobooks—Utatane, Hanabi, and Hanako— firmly establishing herself as one of the most innovative newcomers to contemporary photography, not just in Japan, but across the globe.

Photographs by Rinko Kawauchi

Rinko Kawauchi has gained international recognition for her nuanced, lushly colored images that offer closely observed

fragments of everyday life. In her latest work, she shifts her attention from the micro to the macro.

The title, Ametsuchi, is comprised of two Japanese characters

meaning “heaven and earth,” and is taken from the title of

one of the oldest pangrams in Japanese—a chant in which each character of the Japanese syllabary is used. In

Ametsuchi, Kawauchi brings together images of distant

constellations and tiny figures lost within landscapes, as well as photographs of a traditional style of controlled-burn

farming (yakihata) in which the cycles of cultivation and

recovery span decades and generations. Punctuating the series are images of Buddhist rituals and other religious ceremonies—a suggestion of other means by which

humankind has traditionally attempted to transcend time and memory. ◎

Kiko Mizuhara

I found out about Kiko Mizuhara the same way that most people found out about her , from watching director Tran Anh Hung’s film adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s Norwegian Wood. Kiko Mizuhara played Midori, and perfectly. How can she be Korean if her mother was born in Japan? How can she be Japanese if she was born in Texas to a Korean mother? How can she have a Japanese last name if her father was a Caucasian guy from Texas? →

Kiko Mizuhara is beautiful and talented, about her I only know she is a "sense girls "in my eyes, which mean you look at her,you can feeling one sense we call artless grace.Without make up,without photoshop, even you know her life style, you also feeling the "sense"of comfy. About her name, actually in English, it’s really hard to find any information about

#2 Coming to her background, her official nationality is American, and that’s where she was born. Kiko’s father is a Caucasian American man from Texas. Kiko’s mother is a Japanese-born woman of Korean ancestry. In Japan, this nationality is called Zainichi. Oh,she can speaks three languages.

Kiko Mizuhara. Even something as basic as her name is up for debate. Wikipedia says she was born Audrie Kiko Daniel but Asianwiki says she was born Noriko Daniel. I guess both sites are partially right: Kiko Mizuhara was born Audrie Noriko

"She’s sexy and funny and has fashion sense.",She was great in Norwegian Wood ( ノルウェイの森 ) and I wanted to steal all the dresses she wore in that film.!" (openprivatelife.,2012)

Daniel. (Even Wikipedia can be wrong sometimes.) Kiko Mizuhara is a stage name.

Mika Photo by nordicthink Tolvanen ミカ トルヴァ ネン

Mika Tolvanen is a designer based in Helsinki, Finland. He was invited by DESIGNTIDE TOKYO as one of the

Love For Simple Functional Shapes

designers for TIDE FOCUS, and this was his first time in Japan. All the works exhibited in the show had certain functions within their simplicity, and their appearance were very quiet, without ism, but with panache. It was similar to Mika himself who is a man of taciturnity but has impressive eyes with intention. There have a interview from designtide interview Mika Tolvanen and I chooce some content to disscuss it.

#1 What is your overall impression on participating in DESIGNTIDE TOKYO? It was really nice and compact. I did not really know what to expect as it was my first trip to Japan but I was happily surprised to see DESIGNTIDE

Mika Tolvanen ミカ トルヴァネ シン プル で機 能的 なか ンたち への 愛

TOKYO was so intimate in size.

#2 Participating in DESIGNTIDE TOKYO what was your impression on the design scene and designers in Japan? I have always liked the way Japanese design pays attention to detail. And it was good to see that heritage is still live and kicking.

#3 Are there any Japanese products or designers that you are currently interested in? Nendo and Fukasawa are the obvious ones, but what I really like are the Japanese ceramic designs by Sori Yanagi, Sueharu Fukami, Makoto Komatsu and Masahiro Mori.

#4 What kind of differences do you feel between the design scene in Helsinki and in Tokyo? Japanese and Finnish design have always had same characteristics. Love for simple functional shapes for example.Despite the huge difference in size, designers in capitals work in a similar way. My visit was brief but from overall view I would tell Finnish design is slightly more concentrated on larger urniture → pieces.

#5 What do you expect from DESIGNTIDE TOKYO? What kind of event do you think it should become? I hope it will never become too big bloated commercial event. The lack of big companies will keep the spirit fresh.

EAT WELL?

EAT WELL?

Agedashi Tofu

EAT WELL?

The Secret food for

Staying young

Tofu is made of curdled soy milk, pressed into blocks in a process similar to

making cheese. It is a good source of protein and a staple of Japanese cuisine. Tofu is an especially important ingredient in vegetarian Buddhist temple cuisine (shojin ryori). On its own, fresh tofu has a delicate taste. It is a

versatile food that can be used in a variety of sweet and savory dishes.

Many of my internation friend first hear about tofu.I rememer when I checking with a senior from NTU working at Lancome counter about the skin problem,I suggest can eat tofu .She told me she was first time hear about it,also don't know what is it look like.I absolutely love tofu.I saw this Tofu Tutorial online last last month, by Ms. Gliding Calm.I follow this recipe to make my tofu.with my friend last week,And I want to share this to people whom looking at creat and handmake a new food^ Gliding Calm Rub/Marinade: -ginger powder -brown sugar/honey (or another sweetening agent!) -sesame oil -rice wine vinegar (optional) -soy sauce (optional) -chili sauce (optional) -onion or Chili, black pepper powder may also be added

I start with a block of tofu(Which I bought from Tesco chinese area)and slice it into about 10 pieces, each 1/4 an inch thick. Then I cut those in half as well and press them firmly with a paper towel or clean dish cloth to soak up the excess moisture. And actually you just get the surface dry i would be fine@~

The ordinary web say we need to spray our pan, actually is depend on how dry your tofu was..ha,I forgot to spray my pan but noting happen.I’ve put my flavorings sauce from simple:only BBQ sauce &Chinese pepper^

After that,is time to cook our special mix tofu^ Just try your best to coat both sides with your sauce or rub and bake in a high-heat oven .About 425-450* for 36min. Might depend on which type tofu you were chooce before. It’s done when you say it’s done la.
