DECLARATION
Design is not exclusive to a select group of individuals; anyone can be a great designer as long as they possess empathy, intentionality, and curiosity. Design should not be taken too seriously; it should be enjoyable and whimsical. Great design should evoke curiosity, spark creativity, and foster communication among people. As designers, we have a moral obligation to create spaces that enhance our health and well-being, and we have the power to shape environments that lead to a more fulfilling life. Design can greatly impact our interactions and relationships with one another. Our surroundings are a reflection of our internal state, and an organized environment can have a positive effect on its users, while a chaotic one can lead to disarray. Therefore, it is crucial for designers to create spaces where people feel safe and supported. Design should have a sense of rhythm, beauty, and playfulness, as these elements contribute to its overall effectiveness.

DISCOVERY A Visual Arts Elementary School
Site: 10 N Brunswick St Richmond, VA 23284
Approximately 22,200 SQ FT
Year Built: 1920
Architect: Carneal & Johnston
Project Statement:
“Discovery” is a visual arts elementary school designed to foster hands-on learning through art-making. Research shows that art enhances the process of learning because it enriches our cognitive, attentional, emotional, and motor capacities, which are the driving forces behind all learning. This project aims to support learning and teaching practices that encourage students to investigate and experiment in a more processoriented manner.
Concept Statement:
The Art Elementary school displays elements of exploration through the design of lighting, color, and forms, creating a compelling environment for students to learn and discover. Exposure is encouraged through open spaces, displays of artwork, and flexible furniture, promoting interaction and collaboration, while exposition is highlighted through curated displays, celebrating the students’ creativity and inspiring further artistic expression. Additionally, each concept model and drawing explores six common Gestalt principles, which were developed by German psychologists to describe how we interpret the world around us.
Law of symmetry: The tendency of the brain to perceive symmetrical elements as being connected, even if they are not.
Law of closure: The way the brain perceives an incomplete object as a complete one.
Law of proximity: The natural perception of objects that are near each other as comprising a group rather than seeing them as individuals.
Law of similarity: The brain’s ability to perceive items or objects as related if they share certain characteristics, such as shape, color, or pattern.
Law of prägnanz: Humans prefer experiences that are simple and orderly, and when faced with perceived complexity, our brains tend to simplify them.
Law of continuity: The brain tends to follow a path that is literal or implied by the objects it sees.

DESIGN FEATURE
Inspired by Loop Kindergarten in Tianjin, China, I wanted to design an element that connects all three levels together. I had the idea of using a translucent material to allow students to display their work while providing light and color to reflect off the walls, by incorporating a skylight. Over time, I incorporated the idea of displaying work on the walls and used this geometric form to guide an element of a future design feature.

This idea was later inverted and developed into colorful fabric panels. Initially, I was thinking of using sheets of colored acrylic, but I changed my material to chiffon fabric to allow for movement.

SEDIMENT A New York Loft Apartment
Site: 500 Park Avenue, 37th Floor
New York, NY 10022
Approximately 4,500 SQ FT
Year Built: 1960
Architect: Skidmore, Owings and Merill
Project Statement:
This loft is located at 500 Park Avenue, New York, with a 360-degree view of the city. The apartment was designed for a local couple: the woman is a bag designer who owns her own business and occasionally works from home, and her partner is currently retired with a background in architecture. The client requested a modern Tribeca-inspired apartment with unobstructed sight-lines to the views.
Concept Statement:
Connection and disconnection are recurring themes in the couple’s lives. They are connected to each other, their families, the city, and their careers. However, they also desire moments of disconnection from the busy day-to-day life in the city.

PERMUTATION A Multi Generational Home
Site: Forest Hill Park Richmond, VA 23225
Approximately 1,500 SQ FT
Project Statement:
Permutation is a multi-generational apartment building situated in the heart of Forest Hill Park. The intent of this design is to create two flexible living spaces by incorporating movable walls and adjustable furnishings. The building is divided into three equal sections. Each apartment includes a workspace, bedroom, and restroom. The third section is designated for communal and task-oriented activities, such as laundry, cooking, dining, and relaxing on the patio.
Concept Statement:
The concept for this design stems from the movable compartments of a Rubik’s Cube. The bold colors and right angles influence the form and function of the space. The three spaces have been designated for the three primary colors: yellow, blue, and red.

BALANCING DEVICE
Inside / Outside
Project Statement:
Design a space for the balancing device where someone can marvel at the phenomena of gravity and observe how even the gentlest breath of wind, the force of gravity, and the changing position of the sun throughout the day interact with the balance.
Concept Statement:
The concept for this project developed through a series of sketches inspired by a tomato pin cushion used for sewing. The form, color, and functionality of the pin cushion served as inspiration for the design of the balancing device.
The balancing device is to the space like an octopus is to camouflaging in the space.
