pH & Healthy Teeth and Gums pH (“potential hydrogen”) is a key measurement of health in the oral environment. As a society, we tend to upset pH balance via consumption of foods that foster acidity: sugar (often a hidden ingredient), artificial sweeteners, deli meats, pre-packaged foods, processed dairy, grains, fruit juices, starchy vegetables, soda, alcohol, etc. Sugars are broken down in the mouth by the enzyme salivary amylase. Oral bacteria (Streptococcus mutans, etc.) use the sugar to produce an insoluble glycoprotein matrix to colonize on the surface of our teeth (plaque build-up). Once bacteria establish a stable living environment, they thrive on dietary sugars, producing organic acids (lactic acid, acetic acid, formic acid) through anaerobic metabolism. These acids initiate two problems: (1) increased acidity of oral pH (which encourages proliferation of oral biofilm, and (2) demineralization of tooth enamel and dentin. An acidic oral pH increases a tooth’s solubility of calcium and other enamel minerals, allowing these minerals to be lost from the tooth surface easily. Demineralization of tooth enamel and dentin occurs when oral pH drops to approximately 5.5. Demineralization significantly increases tooth susceptibility to decay. Saliva is our natural defense against demineralization, containing minerals like calcium and phosphate that will remineralize damaged teeth over time if – and only if - pH balance is reestablished. (Ask us about “band aid” support for oral pH balancing: FL2-Free MI Paste, Uncle Harry’s products, EvoraPro, oil pulling.) Measure oral pH with pH strips, and compare the result to the color chart on the box. The healthy range of saliva pH is 6.0 to 7.0 (slightly acidic). Salivary pH fluctuates greatly depending on recently consumed foods, so take pH readings first thing in the morning to obtain the most accurate measurement. Ultimately, optimizing nutrition is the genuine way to break the “vicious cycle” of oral acidity. Our diet can support our body’s elimination of acids by providing adequate intake of minerals (like sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium), by creating efficiently functioning modes of elimination (liver, kidney, gallbladder, overall lymphatic system), and by supplying adequate hydration to flush toxins. Need help? Schedule a session with our wholefood nutritionist ($50/hour). Balanced pH can be yours now! Other negative influences on pH: environmental toxins, stress, smoking, excess alcohol, lack of exercise, heavy metal burden from

dental materials, galvanic current from metals in the mouth, etc. For more information, visit us at www.MeetinghouseDental.com. Or call 215.293.0909! Next issue: look for our article on EvoraPro, a break-through oral probiotic! See Display Ad on page 26.
Spring Cleansing the Ayurvedic Way Ayurveda stresses of importance of cleansing every spring and fall. Unlike many other methods of cleansing, an Ayurvedic cleanse focuses on the re-kindling of Agni, the digestive fire. The method includes a Kichari mono-diet and incorporates herbal teas and Ayurvedic regimens into each participant’s lifestyle. What is Kichari? Kichari is a rice and legume dish that is balancing and nourishing to the body, and is a complete protein. Kichari serves as a fiber and “scrapes” out toxins (called ama in Ayurveda) that have accumulated in the GI Tract. The body will feel satiated during the detoxification process rather than weak and tired because of kichari’s highly nutritious value. Because this cleanse is gentle and nourishing, and not depleting, it is appropriate for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, menstruating women, and those with health conditions. Kichari is free of heavy ingredients such as soy and gluten, is vegetarian, and can easily be made vegan-friendly. What is a Mono-Diet? A mono-diet is an easy way to press the “reset” button on your digestive processes. Because the body only needs to digest one food for a period of time, it learns to quickly and efficiently do so, and can spend more time and energy to healing, strengthening, and ultimately resting. A Perfect Tea: Whether you are cleansing or not, coriander, cumin and fennel seed tea is a wonderful addition to your daily routine. Add a pinch of coriander, cumin and fennel seeds to hot water and let steep for 10-15 minutes. Drink this throughout the day. Learn More: It is always important to work with an Ayurvedic Practitioner when you cleanse. If you would like more information about Ayurvedic cleansing or would like to participate in a guided cleanse, please contact Practitioner of Ayurveda and Herbalism, Lynn Roberts-Ward. Lynn serves as the Co-Founder of Banyan Yoga & Ayurveda in Elkins Park, PA, is a member of The National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA) and Yoga Alliance, and is a Certified Massage Therapist and Reiki Master-Teacher. She finds joy in practicing Yoga, Ayurveda and Herbalism one-on-one with

Respiratory Infections can be treated naturally According to the NIH, lower respiratory infections are a greater burden of disease worldwide than HIV, malaria, cancer and heart attacks. (1) People who suffer from COPD, cystic fibrosis or asthma are especially prone. (2) Treatment can be especially difficult when we don’t even know whether it is a virus, bacterium or fungus that we are battling. To make matters worse, the standard of care in allopathic (western) medicine has us taking pills. This systemic approach has the dangerous drugs passing through our entire bodies and all our organs while treating an invader that is primarily on the airside of our lungs. This dangerous treatment is neither appropriate nor effective in most cases. When you are treating an infection on the air-side of your lungs, you should apply the active agent to the air-side. (3) Lay it down right on top of the invading pathogens. Replenish it often to keep the area moist with antimicrobial. This much more effective delivery can be accomplished by breathing the fine droplet mist of a nebulizer. One can achieve far greater local dosing with much less of a systemic dose. The difference can be as great as 1000:1 in dosing and coverage. Put the medication where it’s needed and only where it’s needed. You need less and it works better. The next important step is to choose an antimicrobial that kills all three pathogens. In this manner, your doctor doesn’t have to guess the proper drug or try them all sequentially. In fact, you don’t even need to use a drug. Clinical studies have shown that administration of an enhanced aqueous colloid of silver in this manner will clear even the most difficult pathogens. (4) Perhaps the best attribute to this therapy is the complete lack of adverse side-effects. Natural, healthy and effective respiratory relief for infections. When using an enhanced aqueous colloid of silver of 50ppm concentration or better, the dosing protocol is usually 3 milliliters, 3 times per day. For acute infections, the 3 milliliter dose can be administered every two waking hours. One must use a nebulizer
so that the liquid comes off in micro-droplets. A vaporizer will not work as it will produce steam from the water and leave the active ingredients behind. The nebulized mist is inhaled deep into the lungs where it will coat the invading pathogens. Reiki-Reiki-Reiki! What in the world is Reiki? Reiki (pronounced “RAY-key”) is a gentle, non-manipulative and non-invasive, hands-on healing art. Reiki is a Japanese world for a high, fast, and beneficial frequency of Universal Life Energy. Reiki energy stimulates the body’s own innate wisdom to heal at the root cause of the issue. It addresses both chronic and acute conditions, gently and powerfully supporting balance among all the body’s systems and the regenerative processes of body and mind. There are three degrees or levels in Reiki. Level I is a oneday class in which you receive four “attunements” (energyactivating sessions), to channel Reiki energy for the rest of your life and learn how to help yourself anytime you want to relax, feel more balanced, manage pain, speed healing, etc., or to help others do the same! Reiki is fun and easy. Even young children can become Reiki Practitioners! Rev. Glenda Smith teaches Reiki and offers treatment session. 267-218-4254 or email Glenda@circleofmiracles.org. Homeopathy: Customized Solutions for Women’s Health Two of the most common concerns women have may occur monthly— and they are migraines and cramping. There are many ways to support healthy hormonal balance, and when this is achieved, these symptoms become a thing of the past. Homeopathy is a system of medicine that has over 200 years of clinical data behind it. Homeopathic remedies are made from very dilute amounts of natural substances, and with no side effects, you can see why it is continuing to gain in popularity. Homeopathic remedies are chosen based on the individual’s symptoms; there isn’t one remedy for cramps and another for migraines. Although there are remedies that are commonly used by doctors for these conditions, the right remedy will be chosen with your specific symptoms in mind. For example: —if you become emotional before your period and are irritable and start crying easily or over simple things like commercials on tv, if your period comes late, or if you have a headache with wandering pains that causes you to want to get some fresh air, you might
40

benefit from a certain remedy called Pulsatilla (wind flower). These women are likely to have difficulty digesting fatty foods but will also really like them, especially butter. This remedy helps balance the hormones that cause the emotional rollercoaster that can occur before menses, and helps women regain control over their emotions. —if your period is characterized by severe cramps that feel like a bearing down sensation, if your migraine before menses is like a heaviness, and if you get acne prior to your menses mainly on the chin, you may benefit from a remedy called Sepia. Women who benefit from this remedy may also have changing skin color (called melasma) that is due to hormonal imbalances. Because of the popularity of homeopathy, many stores now carry combination formulae. These medicines have low strengths (6x) of the most common remedies used for certain conditions; you may see a PMS formula or a cramps formula that contains either of the remedies above. These combination formulae can be very helpful for many women, but as you can see from the above descriptions, they will only be helpful if they contain the remedy that matches your symptoms. The remedies mentioned above are not recommendations, but just examples of the variety of symptoms women with the same concerns may have. The right remedy will stimulate the body’s own healing capacity, thereby normalizing menses, migraines, mood, and more. And with no side effects, homeopathy can be the way to go for the modern woman. The Power of Creativity in Health and Well-Being Recent advances in the field of neuroscience demonstrate how creativity has far reaching effects on our overall wellbeing. Creativity allows new expression, which can manifest in our body, cells, and even genetic material. Even though our genes remain unchanged, the proteins our genes express can shift significantly. For example, an 8-week mindfulness class changes the volume of our prefrontal cortex and reduces neural connections to the amygdala (the fear center in our brain). Because of these neuronal changes, genes express different proteins. So how we think and respond to ourselves can literally change our body and our health! In Art Therapy, participants use drawing, coloring, clay, photography, collage, and other media to express, release and give voice to those parts of themselves and their lives they haven’t been able to put into words yet. Talking about the experience in creating, the words often come to form, leaving people with a sense of relief, understanding, and empowerment. Art Therapy and Mindfulness
practices combine to offer a powerful, quiet, attentive, and nonjudgmental journey to the present moment, providing the opportunity to practice a relaxed, curious, way to observe, cultivate a sense of being grounded, and deepen awareness. In Child Centered Play Therapy, the focus is on the relationship between the therapist and the client as the basis for change. The therapist takes a nondirective approach and promotes understanding and empathy to support a child in expressing emotions through play, the natural language of children. Through fully attuning to the child in this process, the therapist facilitates the creation of new neural pathways in a child’s brain – to establish more secure attachments, improve mood, and promote self-regulation. Sand Tray Therapy uses miniature figurines that clients arrange in the sand, providing a way to nonverbally express emotional issues. This provides a safe psychological distance, allowing clients to communicate through these miniatures rather than directly verbalizing pain. Projecting feelings onto the figurines helps to access and regulate right-brain processes, where trauma is stored, making it an effective intervention for reworking trauma and pain. Creative expression can be effective for a range of concerns, including bereavement, trauma, anger, attachment issues, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and mood disorders. The Resiliency Center in Ambler, PA offers creative approaches to healing as well as workshops in art, writing, and therapeutic drumming. Integrative Approach for Inflammation and Arthritis Immune system is our defense system and protects us from day to day threats such as infections and fights against serious cancers. Unfortunately, in some cases our body is exposed to unwanted environmental triggers and infections which can activate our immune system. This activation process can become uncontrolled if the person has prolonged active infection or has persistent exposure to culprit agents. This activated immune response leads to changes in our defense cells and the start producing chemicals called cytokines, which are part of the pathologic immune response. These cytokines lead to unwanted inflammation and damage in our body tissues. These markers of inflammation can be testes in blood of patients with autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and scleroderma. CRP and ESR are common tests done to identify inflammation in the body. Over the last decade, extensive research has concluded that many chronic conditions such as asthma, heart disease and dementia also have inflammation in the background as contributor factor for the origin and high activity of these diseases. Over the last few years it has also become evident that environmental and nutritional factor play a major role inflammation and its effects on our genes. Studies have also found out that there are natural solutions available to slow the inflammatory process occurring in our body. Rheumatoid arthritis Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common autoimmune arthritis affecting 1% population. Rheumatoid factor and anti CCP are antibodies help in confirming diagnosis. Integrative therapy has very promising role in controlling inflammation seen in rheumatoid arthritis and similar autoimmune conditions such as psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and systemic lupus erythematosis. Integrative approaches can help us become stronger and keep inflammation at minimum. Introducing anti-inflammatory nutrition and healthy lifestyle is the cornerstone for stopping inflammation. Incorporating nutritional supplements can also help reduce inflammation and stabilize immune system through regulation of immune system. Exercise and dietary changes are now considered the most important game changers to control chronic inflammation. A study in England revealed that middle aged men and women who increased their exercise were able to lower their levels
inflammatory markers, CRP and IL-6. Another study looked at 10 year follow up of more than 4000 men and those with at least 2.5 hours a week of moderate to vigorous exercise routine had siginificantly lower levels of both CRP and IL-6. Coffee and smoking: High consumption of coffee is linked to rheumatoid arthritis. Cessation of tobacco use is been found helpful in reducing RA disease activity. The following nutritional agents are found helpful in rheumatoid arthritis. Omega 3 FA: There is been an increasing amount of scientific data supporting use of omega-3 fatty acids obtained from cold-water fish such as salmon and also sardines. Tree nuts such as walnuts and almonds are also rich in omega 3 FA, plant source of omega 3 included flaxseeds. Dose is up to 2-3 g a day or GLA 1.5-3 g/day, Conjugated linoleic acid does 2-3 g daily Antioxidants: Vitamin E 100 units as mixed tocopherols, Vitamin C 250 mg twice daily, Selenium 400 mcg daily Botanicals and Herbs: Green tea extract (EGCG), curcumin (turmeric), quercetin, ginger, white willow bark, boswellia. Most commonly Ginger dose is 1 g 2-3 times a day, Turmeric 500 mg to 1000 mg 2-3 times daily. Mineral and Vitamins: Calcium 1000-1200 mg daily, Magnesium 400-750 mg daily, Vitamin D 2000 international units daily. The energy of Andara crystals is specific to the upper chakra centers. Thoughts become more focused, and the transformational process of energy ( intent) into matter is accentuated. The vibrational difference between thought and the object of the thought, becomes reduced. Therefore the time and conscious effort required to manifest intent into physical reality is also reduced.
Deb McComas utilizes the Andara Crystals and creates what is called THE GENESIS SPIRAL for meditation and healing. See dates and times in events & activities section. See Display Ad on p. 29.
Many experience the effects of Andara crystals as dramatically expanded sensory perception and access to information beyond normal third dimensional channels. Intuition is increased, especially experiences of telepathic connection with other people of beings. Connections to your higher divine self are strengthened, increasing feelings of universal oneness, harmony and joy. Andara crystals are a soul enhancing, high vibrational healing tool that works on all levels; physical, emotional and spiritual. The Oral-Body Connection: Roots of Inflammation Most people’s concern with oral health begins and ends with cavities – “Look mom, no cavities!” Although having a mouth free of cavities is great goal, in terms of the impact on overall wellness, the attention should be focused on the area surrounding the roots of the teeth, the gums. Yes, the gums. You know the area of the mouth that gets

flossed with reckless abandon two days before the cleaning appointment. Although the medical field has recognized for many years that any infection in the mouth can seed bacteria to other parts of the body (the reason why an organ transplant and artificial joint patients need dentist clearance for mouth infection), the main body of research currently focuses on a strong link between gum disease and chronic inflammation of the body. This connection is the based on the evidence that bacterial damage of the tissue lining the gums causes inflammation of the immediate area and beyond. The significance of this fact is that periodontal disease may affect as many as 75% of the population in their lifetime.
In conclusion, mounting research has shown the value of good oral hygiene and proper oral health. Although the public is obsessed with whiter and brighter smiles, from a wellness perspective a mouth free of infection and inflammation is the key to systemic good health. Good floss to you! See Display Ad on page 33.
Typically, inflammation is a normal response of the body’s immune system to quickly defend and heal from foreign invaders or injury. The immune system mobilizes certain cells and special chemicals to attack the bacteria. This initial reaction is beneficial, however if the attacks or damage continue for an extended period of time, the inflammation that was initiated to heal begins to injure the body.
The decision to disclose sexual identity for lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals can be tough. People struggle with concerns of being rejected by friends, family or employers. Coming out is a life long process that happens every time a person makes new friends, starts a new job, or moves into a new neighborhood. As a psychologist, I help individuals and families to negotiate the coming out process by providing education and dispelling myths. Below is information to help you support a friend in the coming out process.
The primary damage this chronic inflammation seems to have on the body is in the lining of blood vessels, most significantly in the heart, brain and other arteries. The introduction of a steady stream of bacteria and immune chemicals also trigger the release of inflammatory agents such as C-reactive protein and fibrinogen. The combination of all these factors can damage the arteries and eventually increase the risk of atherosclerosis and lead to cardio vascular disease.

How to Support a Friend Who is Coming Out
215.345.6525
www.CreatingCommunity.com
1. What does LGB mean? This stands for lesbian, gay or bisexual. Some people may not want to label themselves so it’s important to affirm various identities and avoid making assumptions. 2. Isn’t bisexuality just a phase? No, bisexuality can be a stable and enduring identity for some people. 3. I’m afraid my friend will be bullied. Isn’t it better to keep sexual identity a secret? Research indicates that suppressing sexual orientation can create stress, anxiety and strained relationships. Psychological and physical safety should always be considered when determining if, how, when, where and to whom individuals come out. 4. How can I support someone who is coming out? Listen, empathize and avoid assumptions. Be open and flexible. It is true that heterosexism and homophobia exist and people need to be aware of safety issues as they negotiate the coming out process; however, outcomes are positive when LGB individuals have a strong social support system. 5. Is sexual orientation a choice? Research indicates that for most people, sexual orientation is probably not a choice. Although people can choose their behaviors, sexual orientation is much more multifaceted and includes enduring emotional, romantic, social and sexual attractions. 6. What about psychological well being? Research indicates no significant differences between LGB and heterosexual people in terms of psychological wellbeing; however, when sexual minorities are the
victims of bias, hatred, rejection and bullying, there are higher rates of depression and anxiety. Here are some tips to support a friend in the coming out process: -Be genuine -Express an openness to learn more -Avoid stereotyping -Seek accurate information -Communicate support, love and affirmation Audrey Ervin, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist in Doylestown, PA. Neurofeedback is Approved as Treatment for ADD & ADHD Neurofeedback has recently been approved by the American Academy of Pediatrics for the primary treatment of ADHD. Why is this an important issue? Up until this past November, the only approved treatment for ADD and ADHD was stimulant medication. Characteristics of ADHD include restlessness, impulsive speech and behaviors, and being “constantly in motion.” Other characteristics include inattention, daydreaming, forgetfulness, not listening, poor organization, etc. Individuals have difficulty following directions and

struggle at home and at school. Parents are often frustrated with these behaviors because they interfere with academic/ occupational, personal and social life. Stimulant medication has many draw backs because they seldom have long range positive effects. Since they are amphetamines, there is a risk of addiction. Neurofeedback was discovered in the 1960’s by the military when pilots were trained with EEG-biofeedback or neurofeedback to produce faster brain waves. This training was done to prevent the seizures produced from inhaling jet fumes. Pilots reported being more alert and calm with improved focus as a result of the neurofeedback training. Interested scientists and clinicians began using neurofeedback in their laboratories and clinics where much supportive evidence was generated. Neurofeedback as a treatment modality has been growing in the United States since the late 1980’s. Recently, the international community has begun to show an interest in the use of neurofeedback in the treatment of ADHD and other emotional and behavioral concerns. When the international community became interested, the research skyrocketed at the university level. The results of their research became further confirmation of the beneficial effects of neurofeedback for treating ADHD, ADD and other disorders. ADHD and ADD have been known to be associated with a brain wave imbalance. The brain of individuals with some forms of ADD or ADHD produce more slow (inattentive) waves. These excess slow waves are associated with decreased attention and focus, difficulty staying on task, and daydreaming. They also can be associated with hyperactivity, excess movement and impulsivity. In our office we train the brain to produce more of the faster more acceptable waves and less of the slower unfocused waves by a system of rewards and inhibits. Over time, the brain learns to spontaneously produce the more desirable waves. The amount of training needed depends on the severity of ADD or ADHD, with the more severe types taking longer time for the brain to learn to generate the more positive waves. Since results are usually permanent, the individual can enjoy a more satisfying life. See Display Ad on page 37.
