Welcome to the sixth Forest Hills High School Key Club Newsletter! This newsletter includes various events in September, Key Club international news, etc. from 2012-2013. This newsletter will inform you all about what the Forest Hills High School Key club is and does. Key Club is a non-profit organization that helps communities around the world by doing community service projects and by raising money for those in need. Key club is a great way to get people to volunteer at fun events that they will enjoy going to. I would like to dedicate this newsletter to the past Key Club officers for encouraging me to become an editor of the club, the Divisional 8A lieutenant governor-Carla Pacheco for guiding me through my Key Club experience, the adviser for giving me advice, the current officers for helping me in everything related to Key Club, all the Key Club members for making my role meaningful, and my family for influencing me to become the person I am today. Key Club International/District International News ARE YOU READY TO PLAY? Get ready, get set, get kids active! Team up with Nickelodeon for its 9th annual Worldwide Day of Play as it encourages kids to turn off their TVs and video games and enjoy physical activities. Worldwide Day of Play is coming up on October 6, but it’s not too late to host an event! Your club can pick any fun, physical activity that you enjoy doing—dancing, playing Frisbee, hula-hooping, swimming, or roller skating to name a few—and create your own Worldwide Day of Play event. Invite other Kiwanis-family members, neighbors and students from schools in your area to participate. Need more ideas? Check out pro-social.nick.com for tips. And while you’re online, don’t forget to register your event online for a chance to see your group’s name on TV! District News Hello New York District! For those of you that do not know me, my name is Daniel Ivan Lin and I am your 2012-2013 District Governor. Starting this month, you will be receiving The Empirical Monthly, my official monthly update to the New York District Key Club. I hope you will find these updates useful and that they will keep your club well informed throughout this year. Below are some updates. Key Club International/District Youth Opportunities Fund The Youth Opportunities Fund is an endowed fund for Key Club International held within the Kiwanis International Foundation. It provides grants to Key Clubs in need of funding for service projects, fundraisers, and more. Applications for YOF are due by October 15th, so please apply if you need to. Just visit the following link for more information: http://tinyurl.com/987vxc2 Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF This year, Trick or Treat for UNICEF boxes are no longer orange, but white. Design your own box and take a picture of it. Your box can become next year's Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF box. All funds from this year's Trick-or-Treat will be going to The Eliminate Project so trick or treat away! Leadership Training Conference 2013 Get ready to set sail and go under the sea to LTC 2013! This year's 65th Annual New York District Leadership Training Conference will be taking place from Friday, March 22nd - Sunday, March 24th. Prices are as follows: $260/student and $300/advisors (sharing rooms), $500/advisors (single room). Please start planning for LTC. Late registrants will have to pay an extra fee of $100 for the entire club, so please make sure to register as soon as possible. Registration will be up around December. Key Club Week 2012 This year Key Club Week is from Nov. 5th-9th! Celebrate by wearing Key Club shirts, recruiting members, doing massive service projects, fundraising for Eliminate and more. IT’S OFFICIAL!!!! CINDY WIN(ME) IS THE NEW DIVISIONAL SECRETARY OF DIVISION 8A!!
My message to key clubbers: Hey Key Club Members of Division 8A! My name is Cindy Win. But you can call me Cindy Windy or Winnie! I am currently a junior at Forest Hills High School. I joined Key Club my sophomore year and like most people, I thought Key Club was a club for making keys. But when I actually joined it, it was much more than that. Before I joined key club, I was active in other clubs and teams, but those clubs didn’t have a life changing impact on me like Key Club did. Due to my shyness, I wasn’t given as big of a role as in Key Club. As soon as I joined Key Club, I felt welcomed and many key club members spoke to me. I had an immense amount of fun in the events. There’s little effort from how much I gained from the events. My past officers encouraged me to run for a position and I did. I’m the editor and web designer of my high school key club. I loved being involved in my club but I wanted to do more to help not only my school club but also Division 8A key club. Now I’m Divisional Secretary and my role is to advertise key club and show off our pride! I have to record everything that is said during the meetings and events. In addition, I have to help Carla, our wonderful lieutenant governor, whenever she needs help. I also have to keep in touch with everyone and inform everyone about events and meetings coming up in key club. My goals are to have more key club members to come to meetings and events and to prove that Division 8A is the most dedicated division out there! I hope to meet everyone in Key Club and I hope to be an efficient Divisional Secretary! You can contact me and I will try to respond as soon as possible! I’ll try to be as friendly as I can and I’ll try to make everyone feel welcomed in our division. Club News I am Division 8A’s secretary!! I will still be a dedicated editor and web master, so don’t worry! Official club meetings are 10th period, Room 163! Dues must be submitted by December!Remember, we want to submit all dues early to get the early bird award! Dues will be $13 each person and each year you want to join key club.You can hand in dues to any of the officers. I will wait an extra period after school (9th period) to collect dues in room 112! I already added emails and names of people who signed up for key club through me, so you should be receiving emails from me. If you haven’t, please email the key club email: keyclubfh@gmail.com. Reminder: We are NOT going to enforce the three hours of community service requirement this month because most members joined late and there are limited events. The events we did in September were the Walk against hunger walk, JDRF Walk, Light the Night Walk, and the Walk against Alzheimer’s. The future eventsin October are Walk Against Hunger, Kidney Walk, Out of Darkness: Suicide Prevention Walk, and October Divisional Meeting!

President’s Message
Hello everyone, Most of you may not know me, so let me introduce myself. My name is Sonam Sherpa, and I am your President for the term 2012-2013! So if you have any questions about the club, ask away and I will do my best to respond as quickly as possible. Our club's membership drive is currently open till October 15th; if you would like to join, fill out the application and hand us the $13 dues! We have couple of events this month that we would like everyone to participate in! Furthermore, we aren't enforcing the three hours requirement this month due to the limited number of events! K-Family Picnic By Cindy Win On September 2, 2012, we, our key club, went to the K-Family Picnic! K in K-family means Kiwanis and Kiwanis is a world-wide organization of volunteers who hope to have positive impacts on the world. The picnic took place in Cunningham Park. The picnic gathered many organizations that are part of Kiwanis. 119 members of the Kiwanis family attended the picnic, including 4 Branches of the Kiwanis Family and 30 clubs. The clubs that attended from Kiwanis were Glendale, East Meadow, St. Albans, and Jamaica. The clubs that attended from New York District Circle K International were Queens College, St. Johns, SUNY Albany, SUNY New Paltz, Stony Brook, Adelphi University, Cornell University, Five Towns College, Columbia University, and Cornell University. In addition, clubs from the New Jersey District Circle K International: The College of New Jersey, Monmouth University joined the picnic. Also Key Clubbers from Brooklyn Tech, Edward R. Murrow, Midwood, Forest Hills, Richmond Hill, Garden School, Aviation, William Cullen Bryant, Queens High School for Sciences, Bayside, Francis Lewis, Baldwin, East Rockaway, and Bronx Science came to the picnic. Everyone who attended helped raise $381 for the Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation! The amount of money we raised exceeded that of last year’s. Last year we only raised $300! Lyme disease is a serious disease caused by the bacteria carried by blacklegged ticks. Early symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, and skin rashes. If these symptoms are not treated, they will become worse and might involve problems with the heart, joints, and the central nervous system. Key clubbers knew how serious and life threatening the disease is, so that’s why they decided upon donating to people with this disease. During the picnic, we played various games such as ice breakers and water balloon fights. We also got to eat sandwiches and cookies which was all for only $3. I got to enjoy nature and meet new people from different divisions. Before I went to the picnic, I was nervous that I wouldn’t be able to talk to new people easily but when I went to the event, it wasn’t hard at all! I learned more about what other officers did in other divisions and how their clubs ran events and meetings. I received a lot of advice and felt I could do more with the division and club I joined. My favorite part of the picnic was making up questions for an ice breaker. I tried my best to think of unique questions such as what was your most awkward situation. It was also fun talking to key clubbers in my club because I got to have an insight of how they thought key club was. I am very glad I went to the picnic and I am looking forward to it next summer!
Light the Night Walk Light the Night Walk By Kai-yingZheng On September 22, 2012 key club members attended the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk. The walk was to raise funds for Leukemia and Lymphoma patients. The event brings help and hope to people who are fighting against blood cancers. During that night, a lot of people of different ages and various races came together to raise funds for people in need ofhelp. Every year, families and friends across the United States and Canada join the Light the Night Walk events to raise one-hundred or more dollars for people battling blood cancers. The money does not only help people with blood cancers, but also provides lifesaving blood cancer research, free educational materials and events for patients and their families, local programs, counseling programs, and personalized assistance. People were holding balloons while walking on the streets of Woodhaven Boulevard and Forest Park. The balloons shined up the night sky with its white and red lights. White balloons are meant for survivors, red ones are for the supporters, and gold balloons are in memory of loved ones lost to cancer. In between every 5 minutes of walk, there would be teams cheering for the people walking. All of the supporters are volunteers. People volunteer to walk because the walk is inspirational. The walk can help thousands of patients. It is also held in honor of surviving patients and those who passed away due to cancer. The night was filled with music, food and entertainments. Performers were invited to dance and sing for those who walked. Although the walk was long, everyone had fun. It was a fun and meaningful walk for everyone who attended the event.
Walk To End Alzheimer By Cindy Win On Sunday, September 23, 2013, the Forest Hills High School key club went to the Walk to End Alzheimers at Coney Island, Brooklyn. We went to the event late but we still managed to walk with the group of people supporting the walk to get rid of Alzheimers. We saw many people walking for it and we even saw some disabled people with crutches walking for it. The president of key club and I thought of creating this event because Alzheimers is the sixth-leading cause of death and we thought it would be amiable of us to support people fighting against this disease. “The Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, this inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to reclaim the future for millions. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease, the nation’s sixthleading cause of death. Walk to End Alzheimer’s unites the entire community — family, friends, co-workers, social and religious groups and more --- in a display of combined strength and dedication in the fight against this devastating disease. While there is no fee to register, each participant is expected to fundraise in order to contribute to the cause and raise awareness. The Alzheimer’s Association provides free, easy-to-use tools and staff support to help each participant reach their fundraising goal. When you participate in Walk, your fundraising dollars fuel our mission-related initiatives of care, support and research. In addition, your actions, both through fundraising and participating in the event, help to change the level of Alzheimer’s awareness in your community. At a Walk event, you can learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and the support programs and services offered by your local chapter. You will also have unique opportunities to get involved with the cause through advocacy initiatives and clinical trial enrollment. These experiences, in addition to other on-site opportunities, help each participant connect to their reason for walking. JDRF Walk By Ting-Yen Yeh With my curiosity, I pressed the "join" button for the JDRF walk online one week ago. The moments in the JDRF Walk gave me beautiful memories with the Forest Hills Key Club on September 30th, 2012, which was the most beautiful day ever. The walk occurred on a sunny and windy morning.We took the subway to Canal Street to start our walk. In the park, people were giving out free water for the walkers, and shouting out to support us. When walking on the street, I noticed not only beautiful scenes, but also the kindness, caring, and love from the walkers. It made me feel really good when the people greeted me passionately. This walk drew us together in a healthy activity for a worthy cause, raising money to help find a cure for diabetes. We have only one goal: TO HELP those who are in pain, to help them stand up to face the world once again and to impact this beautiful world one more chance. We try to help everybody to live their life in love, peace, hope, and belief because together, we can make a difference. The JDRF walk was my first walk with the FHHS Key Club, and it was also the best day ever had in my life. JDRF is improving lives and curing type1 diabetes.

I created this lay out as soon as I was editor and web master of the club and I think it fits into what key club is. Also I gave the key a meaning in our club. It’s the key to happiness and helping others. The top left corner is the key club symbol. The top right corner is the key club mascot. The bottom left corner is a person running towards the door that is the way to helping people and helping the community. I will update the website weekly or monthly! Message to New Key Club Members Welcome to Key Club! For the new members, here is a description of what key club does! Key Club International is the high school organization sponsored by Kiwanis International. Key Club assists Kiwanis in carrying out its mission to serve the children of the world. High school student members of Key Club perform acts of service in their communities, such as cleaning up parks, collecting clothing and organizing food drives. They also learn leadership skills by running meetings, planning projects and holding elected leadership positions at the club, district and international levels. Key Club International brings together all Key Club's members' efforts and energies into an area that makes an international impact through the Major Emphasis, "Children: Their Future, Our Focus.” The Major Emphasis unites Key Clubs under the banner of service that deals with the most important part of our community, our youth. The Key Club service initiative is the hands-on element of the Major Emphasis. All of the hands-on service provided to children by Key Club International members is directed to a single area of need, to make a substantial impact. The current service initiative, The Eliminate Project, allows Key Clubbers joining forces with Kiwanis International and UNICEF eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. Each year, Key Club International teams up with its three partner organizations, March of Dimes, Children’s Miracle Network and UNICEF, for the fundraising element of the Major Emphasis.
