Welcome to the seventh Forest Hills High School Key Club Newsletter! This newsletter includes various events in October, Key Club international news, etc. from 2012-2013. This newsletter will inform you all about what the Forest Hills High School Key club is and does. It’s October!! We will celebrate Halloween key club style! We will collect UNICEF boxes!

Key Club International News International News THE HERSHEY COMPANY ANNOUNCES YOUTH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM The Hershey Company is seeking eight (8) Key Club members to join the inaugural year of The Hershey Company Youth Leadership Program. The program brings together Key Club members with Hershey’s business leaders to develop initiatives that improve community well-being and sustainability. Eight Key Club members (one from each Hershey’s Track & Field Games program region), The Great 8, will be selected to participate in a year-long leadership program to develop a new service learning project for The Hershey Company and Key Club International. Selected Key Club members will develop skills and experience in program development and evaluation, event planning, media and public relations and communications. The Great 8 will work as a team to design and implement a new service program to promote active play and access to play spaces for youth (grades K-6) and their families through Hershey’s Track & Field Games local meets and existing community events. Highlights of the program include: Developing the program name, activities and event play book Leading local community test and learn events Planning and attending the national media launch at ICON in Washington, DC Participating in a once in a lifetime Apprenticeship Week with business leaders in Hershey, PA (July 31-August 4) *Travel and accommodations will be provided by the Hershey Company Please read and review the full program description and participation requirements.

Key Club International News WHITE HOUSE HONORED MEMBERS OF KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL AS “CHAMPIONS OF CHANGE” October 17, 2012
On Friday, September 21, the White House welcomed 14 Kiwanis International members from across the U.S. for a daylong briefing and to recognize Kiwanis members as “Champions of Change.” The Champions of Change program was created by President Obama to honor ordinary Americans doing extraordinary work in their communities. These leaders demonstrate how Kiwanis International members have leveraged their national service experience to become influential in their careers and leaders in their communities. Each Kiwanis member had the opportunity to share their stories with Administration officials during this day-long event. Each week, a different sector is highlighted as groups of Champions, ranging from educators to entrepreneurs to community leaders, are recognized for the work they are doing to serve and strengthen their communities.
TRICK-OR-TREAT FOR UNICEF’S CREATE A CHARACTER CONTEST October 12, 2012 In much of North America, October is associated with the color orange. Pumpkins ripen, leaves turn every shade on the orange spectrum, and Trick-or-Treaters carry orange boxes collecting coins for UNICEF. But wait…this year’s Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF collection boxes are, well, white. That’s because you get to create your own! And not only for your own use, but to enter in the Create a Character contest. Design your own devil, dog, vampire or villain, take a photo of your creation and upload it to the contest site. Three winning designs will be used on the limited-edition 2013 Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF collection boxes. Put some extra effort into your decoration and you may just earn some extra donations. This year’s funds collected by Kiwanis-family clubs go directly to The Eliminate Project. So those coins you collect—which added up to more than US$600,000 last year—will save and protect mothers and

Thank you. JOIN THE FIGHT TO END BULLYING October 23, 2012 Millions of children worldwide have experienced bullying at school. Any bullying hurts a student’s self-esteem, but at its worst, bullying could lead to high anxiety, bad grades, dropping out of school or even suicide. The good news: As a Key Clubber, you can help. Key Club is taking a stand against bullying with the help of Kiwanis. Through service, you learn about the impact you can make on your community by giving, caring and sharing. Being in Key Club means you are a leader who can show your classmates how to create a safe, bully-free environment. Bully prevention also promotes Kiwanis-family values: serving the people around us, building better communities for ourselves and future generations, and showing others the importance of the Golden Rule. NYDKC News Governor's Project! For those of you that do not know, this year's Governor's Project is called Keys to Accessibility. This project focuses on any service project that serves the elderly or disabled (physical and emotional). This project ends in April, so please be sure to participate in the project! The goal for the project is 5,000 hours and clubs with the most creative projects can apply for the Governor's Project Award for this year's 65th Annual Leadership Training Conference! For more information, click here. Key Club Dues Because of the impact of Hurricane Sandy, this year's Early Bird Dues deadline has been extended to December 1st! This means that both the Early Bird and Regular Dues deadlines are on the same date. Take advantage of this extended deadline to get an early bird patch for your club's banner this year! Trick or Treat for UNICEF For those of you that had Halloween disrupted by Hurricane Sandy, do not fear! All clubs have until December 31st, 2012 to submit all funds raised for The Eliminate Project through Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. Clubs that raise a total of over $250 dollars

Division News During the divisional meeting, we talked about LTC! A lot of members were interested in what it is and what we would do there and Carla answered all the questions we had. We also talked about how we will do a Harry Potter movie marathon, but unfortunately, there were complications and we didn’t do that. Although, we couldn’t do that, we still got to collect money for UNICEF!
Club News It’s October! The main event in history in October is Halloween! We will collect money for UNICEF next month! We will do more walks, park clean ups, and fundraisers! We did the Walk Against Hunger and advocated for it! For the Kidney walk, we met a celebrity!! The celebrity was Nick Cannon! We went to the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk and the Avon Walk! We also went to the October Divisional. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do the Out of Darkness: Suicide Prevention because of Hurricane Sandy. I hope all the best for those who lost their homes ad property due to Hurricane Sandy. We collected a lot of dues and applications from you guys! We have over 200 members so far! We beat last year’s number of members, which was only 100 members!
President’s Message
Hello everyone, Yes, I will be repeating my introduction forever until the membership deadline approaches. My name is Sonam Sherpa, and I am your President for the term 20122013! If you have any questions about the club, ask away and I will do my best to respond as quickly as possible. Because of the recent flu and stomach virus in the city, many of you haven't been able to come to school, so our membership deadline has been moved to October 31st! Club Fair is on October 26&27, attend them, so you can know Key Club better! Yes, application will be handed there and we will collect your dues there as well. Yes, starting this month, you are responsible to fulfill the 3 hours requirement (each month). If you have any questions/concerns, let me know! Walk Against Hunger By Ting-Yen Yeh Over 128,000 people, including 50,000 children, are in need of emergency food assistance in the Greater Hartford area each year. That's why I was at walk against hunger. We took the R train all the way down to Brooklyn. On that train, we were so excited about the event. When the train arrived at the 86 street, we were all getting off the train. But the door closed when most of the people already got off the train but my friend and I were still on the train. Luckily, a girl told us how to get back to the 86 street, but we were so nervous if we wouldn’t get back to the original place. That was quite an awful experience, and it kind of delayed our schedule. But I’m glad that the key club members waited for us the whole time. Then we took a short walk to the Dyker Beach Park to start our walk against hunger. This time, the walk felt easier. We walked with the good music playing, and we held up the yellow brand with "walk against hunger" in different languages. During the walk, I saw a girl walking with us. It made me feel really good to see her smiling on the way. She must have a pure heart for hunger people. Although the road we walked on was quite narrow, we breathed the freshest air ever. Fighting the battle against hunger one step at a time.
National Kidney Walk By Diana Okon The National Kidney walk is a walk made to help sponsor chronic kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease damages an individual’s kidneys and decreases their ability to continue living a healthy life. As kidney disease gets worst; an individual may develop complications like high blood pressure, anemia, weak bones, poor nutritional health and nerve damage. Kidney disease increases your risk of having heart and blood vessel disease. Chronic kidney disease occurs slowly over a long period of time. Early detection and treatment can often keep chronic kidney disease from getting worse. This disease may be caused by diabetes, high blood pressure and other disorders. Diabetes happens when your blood sugar is too high, causing damage to many organs in your body, including the kidneys and heart, as well as blood vessels, nerves and eyes. High blood pressure, or hypertension, occurs when the pressure of your blood against the walls of your blood vessels increases. Moreover, it may eventually lead to kidney failure, which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain life. The National Kidney Walk is a fundraiser that calls attention to the prevention of kidney disease and the need for organ donation. It's also an opportunity for patients, family, friends and businesses to come togetherWalking in this event is a great experience; it’s amazing to see how many people care. Taking part of this event by volunteering with the Forest Hills Key Club shows that there are others in my community that care as well. We set up tables and cheered for those people who came and supported this cause. Having a friend whose mother passed away three years ago from this disease helps me understand the importance of the event. It’s amazing how many students from my school came out to show respect, it gives me the best feeling ever when I see so many people want to make a difference. It’s significant to raise as much money as possible to make sure all those with the disease could be helped.

Avon Walk for Breast Cancer By Jennifer Chavez The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer is an annual event that takes place throughout the country in order to promote awareness for the subordinate cause of death (in relation to heart disease) in the nation. The Avon Foundation for Women established the project in 2003, and has given individuals all over the nation the opportunity to attend the series of fundraisers .Participants may choose whether to walk 39.3 miles or 26.2 miles over the course 48 hours on a Saturday, but only 24 hours on the Sunday of the same weekend. The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer is a weekend long commitment and has mandated that all participants raise, at minimum, $1,800. The Avon Foundation awards funding in breast cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, support services and scientific research, including prevention and therapeutic vaccine studies. The philanthropic foundation gives grants at the closing ceremonies of each walk. Nearly 1 in 3 women living in the U.S. are affected by the malignant disease. A large quantity of that percentage is the Caucasian and African American woman. Breast cancer is a hereditary disease, but can be contracted by an individual that has no family history of it. It is common thought that the male gender is not at risk of breast cancer, on the contrary, anyone can become victim of the malicious disease. Breast cancer begins in the breast tissue and if not treated can spread and affect the rest of the breast, other bodily functions, and ultimately lead in death. The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer was the first Forest Hills Key Club event I attended on October 20, 2012, and had a powerful impact on the way I view situations now. Everlasting gratitude is what I felt while at the event because I realized how fortunate everyone walking, running, cheering, smiling, and breathing were. At that moment we were all alive, and trying to promote awareness for one of the many malignant diseases that could, unfortunately, take away that privilege. Key Club is more than a philanthropic club in our educational system; it serves as a place to have a different perspective on life. While at the event, I had the opportunity to interview John McNally, a true witness at how the Avon Foundation for Women has collaborated with the sciences to end breast cancer. McNally started volunteering with charitable events in the 90’s that is twenty two years of humility and good citizenship. Throughout the years he has been to over 20 events in Boston and New York. He has witnessed the radical change in the number of males supporting the cause. He states “At first, you’d see maybe 50 men, and now you have more than triple that. They even come out in pinks wigs and skirts, they go all out and it’s really amazing how these fundraising events really do increase awareness to Breast Cancer.” If one individual can prevail in helping to raise awareness for breast cancer, the magnitude of strength clubs and cities can have, would be overwhelming. The participants of the walk would raise fists, clap, cheer and thank Forest Hills High School for giving them the penultimate strength in finishing the walk. Everywhere I looked I saw slogans like “For my mom” or “For my sister”. It’s a ghastly thought, to think my mother, my sister, my grandmother could be victim of this disease, and could possibly die. It’s refreshing to see a Foundation that doesn’t promote awareness for their own lucrative behalf, but for the behalf of every woman and man struggling to survive. A man or woman that in the future could be a relative. Forest Hills High School is aiding those, who aid the promotion of life.
Making Strides against Breast Cancer Walk By SunayanaLimbu
First of all, Key Club is a great community service club that gives students the opportunity to help the people in the community, build our characters and develop our leadership qualities. This is a very fun club where we have events and mostly walks on weekends. I have made many new friends after I joined the club. We went on a walk for “Making Strides against Breast Cancer walk” on Sunday,October 21 . Breast cancer is a type of cancer originating from breast tissue, most commonly from the inner lining of milk ducts. It was a sunny day, a little chilly, but it was a great day for a walk. So, we all met up at Roosevelt Avenue and got on the subway trains which dropped us to the Central Park in Manhattan. As soon as we got there, I saw a bunch of people. Most of the people were dressed in pink; some held pink colored posters with thingswritten on them, pink balloons and other pink stuffs. Then, we took a group picture together and waited for the walk to start. After 30 minutes or so, we all walked to make strides against breast cancer! It was a 5 miles walk and we were all excited to do it. And then, we continued to walk. While walking, we saw people cheering for us which urged us to keep walking on and on. We talked to each other, listened to music and took pictures, so that we keep walking at the same pace. Our president helped us finish the walk. Finally, we saw the “5 mile” sign board and drew a breath of relief. We were all tired but also happy simultaneously because we made strides against breast cancer! Breast cancer has taken the lives of so many women in all over the world. I remember the people walking whose daughters, mothers, sisters or aunts have died fighting against breast cancer but there were also survivors who were also walking with us. Knowing that people walked against breast cancer, made me feel like a better person because I had done something worthwhile that day. st

K-Family Relations -This committee has the primary responsibility of preparing inter-club activities with Kiwanis, Circle K, Builders Club, K-Kids, and Aktion Clubs. They also ensures attendance at each meeting of the sponsoring Kiwanis Club. -Educates the membership of the Key Club about the Kiwanis Family and keeps the membership of the sponsoring Kiwanis Club informed of all Key Club activities. -Furthermore, they work on building stronger relationship with other clubs in the High School. Service Project This Committee is responsible for formulating worthwhile activities, and recommending them to the Executive Board Officers. Once approved, the committee is responsible for setting up all the programs for every event. - Research Events and plan them out: Location, time, and date.
Video Committee Goal: Video for LTC Competition - Makes Event Promotion Video - Makes Membership Promotion Video. - Takes video of every events/activities in Key Club. - Works with Public Relations.
Pubic Relations Informs the public of the Key Club’s activities and goals through the use of flyers, articles, photographs, the local newspaper, talks with school officials, radio and television. - Keep members informed of important activities, opportunities and deadlines at the club, division, district and international levels - Request meeting announcement at the school announcement system
