CinemaMatters | Movie Reviews

Prasanna walks away with the honours. The man is disarmingly charming, striking the right balance between naivete, hurt and downright villainy when the dithering screenplay allows him to, that is. He invests the dialogues with such effrontery that you can’t help but applaud his talents.

Nandha (Cheran) wants to become a musician and his marriage with Indhu (Nikhita) is on the rocks. One day, Nandha meets Arjun (Prasanna), a rich youth who is the son of Devarajan (Jayaprakash), a business giant. Arjun loves challenges. And he is angry with his father for playing spoilsport in his love.

Muran During the journey, Nandha opens up about his past life. When they reach Chennai, Arjun throws a challenge to Nandha - that he would do a murder for Nandha and in turn, Nandha would kill someone for him.

Cheran, though, is a major disappointment. The man usually doesn’t turn in a terrible performance, but this time, it’s as though he learnt to emote from the Terminator School of Acting. With his beard covering half his face, there’s little to be discerned about any of his emotions at any time. It’s only his confrontations with Prasanna that provide some relief.

OCTOBER-2011

Muran speaks about the travails of two ‘strikingly’ different individuals. A seat-edge thriller, it is seemingly inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers On a Train. Director Rajan Madhav’s first film, which is produced by Cheran and presented by UTV Motion Pictures, it is more like a road journey that has twists and turns from beginning till end. Cheran and Prasanna make it count thanks to their excellent performance. Cheran as an introvert and Prasanna as a rich and spoilt brat, who loves thrills and challenges, suit the roles well. Nikitha, Haripriya and Jayaprakash are adequate. Padmesh’s camera captures thrilling moments well while Sajjan Madhav’s background score gives momentum to the film. A film to cherish and celebrate, despite the fact that is inspired by movies of such genre made abroad.

R MO EV V IE IE W Iniya, who has acted in Yuddham Sei as Cheran’s sister, is a welcome find. Shorn of make-up, she’s natural, appealing, and very expressive.

Vaagai Sooda Va Set in a remote village near Pudukottai, the movie features Veluthambi (Vimal), son of Annamalai (K Bhagyaraj). His father wants him to take up a government job. To prepare him for it, Annamalai advices his son to go to a village and help educate children working in a bricklin as part of social service. Things change Velu’s life when he reaches the village. He gets attracted by the innocent ways of lives the people lead there. The young children there are forced to work in bricklin and education is deprived to them. Steps in Veluthambi with a mission to educate the young minds. In the meantime, he comes across Madhi (Iniya) and romance blossoms. And there is protests for his dreams to educate children from local landlord. There is agony, anger, frustration et al. How all things are achieved by him forms the rest.

Vimal appears a little uncomfortable in his role as a 1960s teacher. His natural ebullience works in his favour a little, but at times, he looks puzzled, as though he’s not quite sure how he’s supposed to deliver his lines. OCTOBER-2011

Vimal Iniya K. Bhagyaraj Ponvannan Directed by A. Sarkunam Music by M. Ghibran Distributed by Sun Pictures

Go for it Vimal is the mainstay in the script. He is simply superb and outstanding. He plays a little serious role in Vaagai Sooda Vaa, which he does with ease. The young Iniya is impressive. Her spontaneous emotions and expressions hold good for the film. K Bhagyaraj as usual leaves his presence with his performance while the likes of Thambi Ramiah, Ponnvannan and Thennavan excel. Watch out for the group of young kids in the film. They may simply sweep your feet with their performance. Gibran’s music and Omprakash’s cinematography add strength. Seenu’s art takes us to the 1960s. Costumes by Natraj have been created after thorough reserach. They are apt for the script. On the whole, Vaagai Sooda Vaa which talks about educating the poor and under-privileged children is a rare film in Tamil cinema.

It is a tailor-made role for Vishal Krishna. The actor has done his character with ease and shines during action scenes. He fights with panache and dances with elan, which will definitely give a big round of applause from the audience.

UNUSUALLY USUAL Vishal plays his part well. It is the Vishal that we have seen in so many films in the past. He romances and he fights. Sameera Reddy is tailor-made for the role. Tall and cute Sameera Reddy has more to do than just romancing the hero on screen. Poonam Kaur is impressive in her role. Music by Vijay Antony is fits the story. Racy songs for commercial films are unwritten rule which he follows it well. Cinematography by R D Rajasekhar captures the mood at its best. A commercial mass movie has certain grammar and rules. Prabhudeva has sincerely followed them. But for a cliched and seenbefore scenes, the movie is an interesting time pass.

Shanthanoo Bhagiyaraj, son of actor-director K Bhagyaraj, is known for playing romantic themes. In Ayiram Vilakku he has attempted an image make-over. Shanthanoo is cool and handles the role well. He does stunts well and one-liners in the company of Theeppeti Ganesan are good. Sathyaraj reminds one of a similar role that he did in Adithadi. Sana Khan gets a chance to prove her acting skills and does well. Ganja Karuppu and Theeppeti Ganesan tries to evoke humour in vain. Suman plays a typical baddie speaking loud. It is a movie made around Madurai. Director Hosimin tried his best and impresses in parts.

Joining hands with him is Fox Star Studios, a global giant in the business of cinema. Both have combined together to present a meaningful entertainer, directed by debutant Saravanan, who is a former associate to Murugadoss. Jai has got a meaty role, perhaps after Subramanyapuram. As Kadhiresan, he is there giving right emotions scene after scene. Anjali as his ladylove does a chirpy character, like her earlier films. Sharvanand is good as a city youth while Anjali as a village girl is beautiful and adequate. Fresh music composer Sathya’s tunes are catchy. So is his background score. Cinematographer R Velraj seems to be a man of imagination. For he blends colours with angles well. CinemaMatters | Movie Reviews Expectations create disappointments, they say. This seems to be the case of Vandhan Vendran. When we go to the film expecting a lot since it brings together for the first time two bankable talents- actor Jiiva and director Kannan- we end up watching an average fare with the script being the major lacunae. Jiiva has liven up the proceedings with his cool act. He is catchy in romantic and stunt sequences. With Santhanam (who is a big stress buster for Vandhan Vendran) around, he tries comedy too. Tapasee, after Aadukalam, proves once again that she can act well. Nandha does his part well. A romantic youth in earlier films, he gets to play a baddie on screen. Thaman’s songs are good while his background score reminds us Telugu movies. P G Muthiah’s lens has captured the business capital of the country well. On the whole, a good knot fizzles out in the narration. But there is always another chance and hope Kannan would not miss the bus then.

Producers Council polls on Oct 9

The Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC), one of the powerful bodies of Kollywood, will go for elections on October 9, to select office-bearers for the years 2011-2013. A decision in this regard was taken at the executive council meeting of the council. Announcing this in Chennai on Monday, advocates L Chandrakumar and V Parthiban, who have been appointed as the elections officers of the TFPC, said that the last date for non-members to become members is September 15. ‘Produces who have obtained censor certificate for their films and have not yet registered their names in the Council are requested to do so before September 15, to take part in the election process,’ the poll officers said. Stakes are high in the elections to the TFPC, since the office-bearers of the Council, especially president, has the power to control the industry. It is said that actor Vijay’s father and the ruling AIADMK’s sympathizer S A Chandrasekaran would contest for the president post.

Prakashraj, who was supposed to do the villain of Maatraan, Suriya’s forthcoming film directed by K V Anand, has walked out of the project and ace north Indian actor Sachin Khedekar will be replacing him. ‘Prakashraj who was committed to do the film reportedly backed out of Maatran since he was busy with previous commitments. Since he doesn’t want to be a reason for the delay in shooting, he backed out of the project’, sources say And following Prakashraj’s exit, and Sachin Khedekar whom we saw as Amala Paul’s father in much-acclaimed Deiva Thirumagal will play Maatraan’s baddie. ‘Director Anand is happy about signing Sachin,’ add sources.

Amala Paul on a roll

Amala Paul, whose impressive performances in both Mynaa and Deiva Thirumagal won her a huge fan following, has also helped her move to the league of top actresses in southern cinema. Says a source close to the actress, ‘Amala plays an important role in Vettai, which will also feature three other top stars namely Madhavan, Arya and Sameera Reddy. Apart from this, she plays the lead in Muppozhuthum Un Karpanaigal along with Atharva, the son of late actor Murali.’

They further say: ‘Both movies have already triggered interest in the industry circles and are eagerly awaited. Now, Muppozhuthum Un Karpanaigal is also being simultaneously shot in Telugu. The Telugu version has been titled Nirantharam Nee Voohale.’ ‘This film is based on a real-life incident. We’ve added more characters to an incident that took place and have made it into a film. Atharva plays a software engineer and Amala too plays a software professional who has been born and brought up in the US. If Amala manages to deliver another hit, then she will certainly be a force to reckon with in the film industry.’ Meanwhile, the actress has signed a straight Telugu film. Titled Bejawada Rowdeelu, it will have hot and happening hero Naga Chaitanya (son of Nagarjuna) playing the lead role. And the producer is none other than Ramgopal Varma.

Topless Pic: Kajal Denies, Magazine confifif irms The verbal battle between Kajal Agarwal and a men’s magazine intensifed further on Tuesday, with the actress denying that she had never posed topless, and with the magazine’s editor confirming that the photograph was not fake. The actress, who is irked and peeved, said that the photograph that appeared on the cover of the magazine was distorted. ‘I shot for the magazine, but not this way. They have photo-shopped the picture and changed it,’ she said. Coming out with their side, FHM India editor Kabeer Sharma said in a statement: ‘FHM has never in the past or will in the future morph pictures of any celebrities. We shot with madam Aggarwal on the 18th of August in Mumbai and have a full team composed of assistants, stylists, makeup artists, photographers and others to back it up. We’d be happy to release the full untouched raw pictures on the internet soon to back it up also.’ ‘Furthermore we also have a model release form signed by Kajal herself. To say that the picture is morphed is an insult to both the brand FHM as well as the collective intelligence of you (her fans) as well as anyone with half an idea about how Photoshop works. We don’t know what exactly made Kajal change her mind after the shoot… but if she did, the magazine really cannot be blamed,’ he added. WWW.CINEMAMATTERS.COM

Ponvasantham Gautham to make EPV in Telugu too When Gautham Vasudev Menon made Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya in Tamil with Simbu and Trisha, he simultaneously shot it in Telugu as Ye Maya Chesave, with Naga Chaitanya and Samantha. Now the director is repeating the act. The master of romantic stories, who has started the shoot of his new Tamil film Neethane En Ponvasantham with Jiiva and Samantha as the lead pair, will make it in Telugu too with Ram replacing Jiiva. Samantha will be the heroine in both the versions. The yet to be titled Telugu film will have Ram as a 21 year old engineering student who falls for a psychology student Nithya played by Samantha. It will be a love story set in a metro and is targeted at the multiplex audiences. The film will be shot by cinematographer Manoj Parahamsa, with music by AR Rahman. The Tamil version is produced by Gautham’s Photon Kathaas and presented by RS Infotainment, while it is expected that a popular Tollywood company will join hands with Gautham for the Telugu version.

Gautham gets busy with Jiiva Finally director Gautham Vasudev Menon’s movie starring Jiiva has started to roll. The shoot of Neethaane En Ponvasantham, being produced by R S Infotainment along with Photon Kathaas, commenced in Chennai. The ad campaign that garnered interest with the public over the last few days showcases the film as a feel-good, young, college-romance entertainer. Santhanam is also a part of the film, playing an important role. This is the first time Gautham and Santhanam come together and is in fact the first time since Vivek (in Minnale) that the director has signed on a leading comedian. However, Gautham insists that he will be presenting not only Jiiva, but also Santhanam differently. Samantha, who essayed the role of Jessie in the Telugu version of Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (titled Ye Maya Chesave) is the heroine. Cinematography is by M S Prabhu while Rajeevan handles editing. Audiences are eagerly awaiting this love story from Gautham Menon for he is a specialist in it. Jiiva plays Raghu, an engineering college student. It is said that the movie is being shot entirely in Chennai. WWW.CINEMAMATTERS.COM

Kamal to play Tippu Kamal Haasan will don the role of legendary king Tippu Sultan in one of the biggest projects of Mollywood. The historical movie, titled Tippuvum Unniaarchayum will be produced by Gokulam Gopalan, the man behind the epic Pazhassi Raja.

Tipu was an ardent warrior as well as a multilingual genius, says the movie’s scribe John Paul, adding that Kamal was the only one who would fit in the role. Paul confirms that the movie will have portions of history and legend mixed with fictional liberty. In addition, it will give life to legendary characters such as Unniaarcha, Chandu, Aromal Chekavar, Sultan Hyderali, Fathima Beevi, Rukmini and also Napolean Bonaparte. Paul also says the emotional conflicts of both Thippu and Unniaarcha will be the centerpiece of the story. The shooting of the movie, directed by Vayalar Madhavan Kutty, is scheduled to begin by March next year and the movie is aiming for a 2012-end release.

Kamal’s daughter in Mani’s film Ace director Mani Ratnam is back to direct a movie that oozes with romance. According to sources, Mani Ratnam’s next will be an intense love story based on the sensitive issue of plight of Rameshwaram fishermen at the hands of the Sri Lankan Navy. Now, the latest buzz is that the film will have actor Karthik’s son Gautham and Kamal Haasan’s younger daughter Akshara in the lead roles. Veteran cinematographer Rajiv Menon and music director A R Rahman will reportedly be a part of this project. Kamal’s new film

Mollywodo film 4 Friends directed by Saji Surendran starring Jayaram, Jayasurya, Kunchacko Boban and Meera Jasmine had Kamal Haasan making a special appearance in it. The movie has won many awards and accolades. Now the film is to be dubbed in Tamil with the title Anbulla Kamal. It may be recalled that a couple of decades ago, a movie titled Anbulla ‘Rajnikanth’ was made in which Rajini acted as himself. Pradeep, who will be releasing the film in Tamil, says, ‘Kamal plays a crucial role. Since he liked the concept of the story, he acted in it without remuneration. I am extremely happy to release 4 Friends in Tamil.’ He adds: ‘We registered the title for Tamil version as Anbulla Kamal because he is the one who gives a pep talk to the protagonists and changes their ideas about life. Hee is the reason why they decide to live their lives. This title is totally apt.’ The Tamil version is likely to release on 16 September.

Kamal Shooting fast track for Viswaroopam Kamal Haasan has finally commenced shooting for Viswaroopam. Initially Kamal was planning to do some scenes in London. But now he is planning to go to Jordan instead and can the sequences. Anushka will be accompanying him to the country. ‘Viswaroopam is an action thriller and the script too is penned by Kamal himself. Gandhimathi is no more Veteran actress Gandhimathi, who had acted in over 300 films, passed away in Chennai this morning. She was 65 and was suffering from health ailments, sources say. Popular for her supporting roles, Gandhimathi had acted with almost all leading actors and actresses. She is remembered for her performance in 16 Vayadhinilay with Kamal Haasan and Muthu with Rajinikanth. Gandhimathi has featured in many of the movies of Kamal Haasan and Bharathiraja. Whilst she was a Bharathiraja regular at one time, Kamal always wanted her in at least a small role in any movie that he made with a village as its premise, Devar Magan and Virumandi. This is perhaps the greatest recognition that she has received.

All is well, says Parthiban Denying rumours that there is a rift between him and the director duo Hari Shankar and Haresh Narayan, wielding the megaphone for Ambuli, R Parthiban said, ‘There is no problem between me and the directors over dubbing issues.’ The actor-director adds, ‘In fact, I haven’t even seen the film yet. I’m quite busy with Vithagan and I was told that Ambuli would release only after Vithagan. So, I still haven’t started dubbing for the film yet’. Director Hari Shankar is surprised. ‘Parthiban has a guest role in the film and he’s given us full cooperation right from the beginning. During the audio launch of the film, we told him that dubbing work is on for the movie and asked him when he would like to start his portions. ‘But he said he’d like to watch the full film first before starting dubbing. So, we will screen it for him in the next two days,’ he says.

Ban on Nikitha lifted

Coming under attack from the film industry, the Kannada Film Producers Association lifted its three-year-old ban on multi-lingual actress Nikita Thukral, saying its action against her was foolish. The Association also tendered an apology to the actress, admitting that the decision was taken in haste, four days after it slapped the ban, holding Nikitha responsible for the matrimonial discord in the family of popular actor Darshan and his wife Vijayalakshmi. Speaking to reporters, Association President Muniratna Naidu said, ‘We admit that it was a hasty decision. Actress Nikitha has a blemish less record and is of a good character. She is free to go anywhere in Karnataka and act in Kannada films. We have decided against resorting to ban on actors hereafter’. The move to retract its step came after several prominent personalities in the Kannada film industry including Parvathamma, wife of late thespian Rajkumar, and her actor-son Shivarajkumar, opposed the ban. Nikitha had denied being responsible for the marital discord in Darshan’s family after his wife raised allegations linking her husband with her.

Ajith wants to retain his look Ajith fans are upbeat, as the Thala rocked in Mankatha. As a baddie Vinayak Mahadev, who was suspended from the police department for malpractices, he sizzled the screen.
