Dear Readers, Hope Summer has hit the roofs and all the movies are hitting the screen as well. I always find myself watching action packed movies, at this time of year. Practical movies and real life movies have been a huge hit these days which is a good sign for creators to be natural in their own skin. The legendary actor Sidney Poitier told “I am the me I choose to be. Just let your thought and let the creations flow out and hoping to watch some more good movies. Enjoy reading, Sainthavi Editor

The long time craving of Ajith fans comes to an end with Mankatha, which is massive and mind blowing. A usual masala entertainer has been presented in an unusual way by director Venkat Prabhu, completely satisfying the appetite of Ajith fans.

GET, SET, GO

Though publicised as a multistarrer, Mankatha is purely dominated by Ajith and the ‘Thala’ delivers nothing but his best in every scene. As a man whose only aim in the life is money, Ajith hogs the limelight. Equal importance has been given to Arjun, the action king of Tamil cinema. Though beauties like Trisha, Anjali, Andrea Jeremiah and Lakshmi Rai are there, there don’t have much scope to take over the screen. And there is a long list of other actors, such as Premgi Amaran, Jayaprakash, Vaibhava and Aravind Akash. Cinematography by Sakthi Saravanan and music by Yuvanshankar Raja are the two biggest strengths of Mankatha. However, a crisp editing could have done a world of wonders, as the first half is lengthy. Shriya Saran plays the heroine. Shriya’s not part of the crew to act, she’s gorgeous and is the film’s cooling factor.

Jiiva is the latest heartthrob in Kollywood thanks to the stupendous hit of Ko. He repeats the magic in Rowthiram, directed by debutant Gokul. In an actionadventure film that is packed with punch, Jiiva does his best. He brings anger, agony in his eyes.

Vidharth continues from where he left in Mynaa. With his boy next-door looks, he fits the role well. Equally impressive is Kavitha Nair. The actress from the God’s Own Country combines glamour and beauty. Ilavarasu and Kishore are also there, proving their expertise on screen. Camera work by Sellathurai and editing by V T Vijayan add value to the screenplay. D Imman’s music reflects well the earthy mood. Debutant director Kumaran should be lauded for his characterisations. The movie reminds one of Kalavani at few places. Also the logic is defied here and there. On the whole, there may be some short-comings in the flick. But pardonable for the team has tried its best to render a quality entertainer. AVM is at it again.

Bharath, after a critically-acclaimed role in Vaanam, is back playing a lover boy in G N R Kumaravelu’s Yuvan Yuvathi. Written by S Ramakrishnan, the movie has a good mix of romance and comedy. Bharath looks stylish. He has action, romance and humour to do on screen. Rima Kaleengal looks good. Unlike contemporary heroines, she has a major role to play. Santhanam’s one- liners impress. Sampathraj is impressive as an arrogant father. Anuja Iyer and Shakthi make special appearance towards the end of the film. Kumaravelu has managed to make the movie engrossing and he succeeds thanks to Ramakishnan’s crisp dialogues. Music by Vijay Anthony is a mix of peppy and melodious tunes with Kola Kuthu reminding one of Naka Mukka. Lyricist Snehan plays the main character with ease with a huge star cast around him. The highlight of the movie is that Premnath has laced with some interesting commercial elements and producer Chandrasekhar has given him ample support as major portion of the movie has been shot abroad in a grand manner. Shankar has cranked the camera while KK has handled editing. Both have done decent jobs. Mani Sharma’s music is average and the songs give a feel of having listened them before. On the whole, Uyarthiru 420 is an average fare as the director could have concentrated more on the script.

Harini as a pretty-village girl is adequate while Shiva, Umar and Avatar Ganesh rock the screen with their performance and one-liners. Music by Arul Dev and cinematography by Gopi Amarnath provide many feel-good moments.

Debutant director Yuvaraj has banked heavily on the script and it has helped him a lot. Of course there is no denial that the film reminds us part of Lagaan, Chak De and Kollywood’s own Chennai 600028. But still, Pottta Potti can be watched for its freshness, neatness and humour. The film runs for just two hours and within that time, it makes you laugh for a lifetime.

Following the Footsteps of Kamal

Kamal Ropes in Rahul Bose

The popular Bollywood actor Rahul Bose will be seen doing a prominent role in a Tamil film, thanks to Kamal Haasan. For the ‘Ulaga Nayagan’ brings him to Kollywood through Viswaroopam. The Hindi actor’s character in this mega budget movie has negative shades, we learn from reliable sources. He has been told to grow a beard for the film. Rahul Bose got ample time to get into the character, since Viswaroopam is getting delayed. He has grown a beard and is looking like the character required for the film, sources say. They add: Bose himself is very excited about working with Kamal Haasan. He is doing intense homework to ensure that all is well when he stands in front of the camera with Kamal.

Viswaroopam

Devi Ravidevan, a former associate of Kamal Haasan, has turned producer now. He is producing a movie titled Kalla Thuppaki. Directing the movie is newcomer Logiyaas. Says Devi Ravidevan: ‘Having worked with Kamal Haasan closely there was always an urge in me to introduce new talents. Though my idea was to establish myself as a director, when Logiyaas narrated the story to me, I chose to produce the movie for him. It is a catchy storyline and need of the hour’. On Kalla Thuppaki, he says, ‘it is about a group of students who go the wrong way in their lives. A good teacher is a must to ensure a good future for them. This forms the crux of the movie.’ Five young boys make their debut as heroes while a Kerala girl Neema is cast as heroine. Popular Telugu music composer S K Balachandran is scoring the music, while cinematography is by rookie A V Vasanth’.

Shooting Starts From today, Kamal Haasan will start shooting for Viswaroopam, a film which has the Ulaga Nayagan in many roles. He is the director and protagonist of the movie, besides taking care of the story, screenplay and dialogues. If sources are to be believed, a grand set has been erected on a site at Old Mahabalipuram Road, the IT Corridor on the outskirts of Chennai, where the shooting of Viswaroopam will be held today. ‘After finishing the first schedule in Chennai, the cast and crew would leave for foreign locales, including England and Canada. It is a gripping thriller penned by Kamal himself,’ sources say. Anushka has been roped in by Kamal to play the female lead in Viswaroopam. Devisri Prasad, who had earlier worked with Kamal in Dasavatharam and Manmadhan Ambu, will score the music.

Jiiva, who has recently floated a film production house called Spiral Dreams, in associaton with his elder brother and actor Jithan Ramesh, is planning to roll out his maiden venture soon. Interestingly, the film would star Jiiva and Arya in the lead roles. Guess who is wielding the megaphone? Rajesh, who had directed both of them (Jiiva in Siva Manasula Sakthi and Arya in Boss Engira Baskaran) will be doing it. ‘My brother Ramesh and I were trying with the idea of producing films for quite some time. It’s just that we want to give something back to the industry where we have grown. Aamir Khan is my role model in this endeavour. Hence I started Spiral Dreams’, says Jiiva. There is a buzz that Arya would co-produce this yetto-be-named film, which is set to hit the floors soon. Meanwhile, Jiiva is waiting for the release of Rowthiram. Directed by Gokul, it stars Shriya opposite him.

Cheran in a Film Titled City

Arjun, Cheran in Vasanth’s Film

After a brief intreval, director Vasanth is back to wield the megaphone. The former associate of veteran K Balachander will be directing a love story, which has apparently titled Moondru Paer Moondru Kathal. Vasanth who made great romantic movies like Keladi Kanmani, Aasai and Poovellam Kettupar is back after a hibernation mode. His last release was Satham Podathe, a thriller which had Prithviraj, Nithin Sathya and Padmapriya as protagonists. Moondru Paer Moondru Kathal would have ‘Action King’ Arjun, director Cheran and a newcomer as male leads. Three new females will be introduced by Vasanth. The movie would be produced by Mahendra Talkies. Vasanth is upbeat that the film would do wonders at the box office. ‘The script is ready and we would shortly go in for shoot,’ circles close to him say. Arjun has completed Mankatha while Cheran is ready with Muran. Trisha Krishnan is all smiles when she starts to speak about Mankatha. The former Miss Chennai plays the lead role alongside Ajith in this 50th film of him, and this is third time for her to do so, after Ji and Kireedam. ‘He is so down to earth. It is nearly impossible for a star of his stature to be this simple and humble. And he is extremely honest too. So I like him very much and he is one of my favourite costars,’ she says. Says Trisha on Mankatha, ‘It’s a boys film and I have very little to do in it. When this role was offered to me, I grabbed it for the simple reason of working with Ajith and Venkat Prabhu. And it was a blast shooting for the film.’ Interestingly, Trisha has dubbed herself in Mankatha. ‘I play a girl from Mumbai and guess that’s why, Venkat insisted on me dubbing in my own voice. He told me that we will give it a try and it worked. He was extremely happy. Looking back, I think I was not confident to dub but now I hope to dub for all my Tamil films.’ WWW.CINEMAMATTERS.COM

After Muran, actor-director Cheran will be doing a city-based subject that has been aptly titled City. It will feature him in a modern role, sources in the know say. Cheran plays one of the lead protagonists, the other being Kishore. It is directed by Nagulan Ponnusamy, who earlier did Srikanth’s thriller, Varnajalam. Cheran is also reportedly acting in director Vasanth’s film. The shooting for City would go to floors early next month. ‘It will be completed in one go,’ sources add. Muran stars Cheran and Prasanna and is being marketed by UTV Films. A road thriller, Muran is getting ready to hit the screens by the first week of September.

Arundhathi is Always Close to Me Anushka

Anushka is pumped up with the success of Deiva Thirumagal. Asked if the movie is close to her heart, she says, ‘Of course yes, but it is next to Arundhathi’. ‘My parents enjoyed the movie a lot. They normally don’t watch a film more than once. But they watched Arundhathi twice’, she said. On her forthcoming projects, she says, ‘I am there in a Tamil film which has Karthi Sivakumar in the lead role. Also, I will be part of Selvaraghavan’s forthcoming venture, an official announcement on which is expected at the earliest’.

Anushka unplugged Actress Anushka has emerged a name to reckon with in both Tamil and Telugu industries with her latest film Deiva Thirumagal (Nanna in Telugu) hogging all attention. She says that she always wants to prove herself as a talented actress. ‘I tried to strike a balance between my Telugu and Tamil assignments. But the flow of the Telugu productions didn’t leave me with enough dates to do Tamil, as much as I’ve wanted to,’ the outspoken actress says. ‘I always believe in completing one film before moving onto the next, so that the dates don’t clash. This year onwards, I’ve decided to do a few more Tamil films, provided good scripts come my way’, she says.
