Editor note April 2011 Dear Reader, At cinemamatters, our heart goes out to all the victims of tsunami and earthquake in Japan. May peace be restored in their lives as soon as possible and we wish them soon recovery. “ Acting is reacting “ which is a very powerful note to be taken. If you notice each artist eventually reacted to the co-artist or the situation and that itself is acting. Any new comer must take this to heart and do homework by reacting to each and every dialogue no matter who delivers it. That’s the major difference between newbies and big stars like MGR, Sivaji, Rajni, Kamal etc.... The body language counts too. It’s important to participate in a scene, even by just moving a cup from one place to the other while delivering a dialogue will make the scene more realistic. Great stars like Mamooty take note of the entire scene and will also learn each and every characters move involved in the scene. This helps him to act and react to the counters given to him. They are all big stars only because they do homework. Acting is not easy and acting is an art and acting is harder than it looks, and actors need appreciation. So if you happen to watch a movie, please look at the hard work that goes into the making of it. Cheers to the actor fraternity. Keep doing what you do and thank you for entertaining us. Enjoy Reading, Sainthavi Editor. Thank you for all your Effort !

Mappillai – Preview The ‘mappillai’ of Superstar Rajinikanth, Dhanush, is ready for his next release, Mappillai. Interestingly, this film directed by Suraj is a remake of his dad-in-law’s yesteryear blockbuster of the same title. ‘Gear up for Maappillai next. Completely opposite genre to my recent release,’ wrote the actor on his page on a microblogging website recently. According to him, it is a racy entertainer stuffed with commercial ingredients. Produced by Sun Pictures, Mappillai has Hansika Motwani as heroine and Manisha Koirala playing the mother-in-law role played by Sri Vidya in the original version. ‘It is a high voltage entertainer where necessary changes have been made to the script,’ the director says. He adds: ‘I had little apprehension

while

choosing the project since the original was a huge hit, that too with Rajini sir in the lead. But I am happy now as the movie has been shaped up well.’Manisha, who is making her comeback in Tamil after a decade (her last film in Kollywood was Baba), says, ‘It is a strong character and I agreed to do it immediately. Dhanush is a nice person.’

Engeyum Kadhal – Preview The long wait is finally over for film-buffs. Actor-director Prabhu Deva’s romantic entertainer Engeyum Kadhal, starring Jayam Ravi and Hansika Motwani in the lead roles, is all set to grace theatres.Music composed by Harris Jayaraj is already topping the charts. The film is produced by AGS Entertainment is a romantic musical shot completely in France and other beautiful parts of the world.Prabhu Deva is confident that the movie would appease Tamil masses. It has everything a youngster would love to come and watch on screen. The songs by Harris Jeyaraj are already a huge hit, he says. Both Jayam Ravi and Hansika have given their best. Working with them was a huge delight. They understood well what I expected and performed accordingly, the director further addsExpressing optimism on his part, Jayam Ravi says,’Engeyum Kadhal is a musical entertainer. Singam Puli STARRING : Jiiva, Divya Spandana, Honey Rose BANNER :Silverline Film Factory DIRECTOR : Sai Ramani MUSIC : Mani Sharma LANGUAGE : Tamil RATING :

SINGAM PULI MOVIE REVIEW For those who like masala movies, debutant director Sai Ramani’s Singam Puli (starring Jiiva in a dual role) would be the right destination. It is about twin brothers who are fighting against each other. Instead of flexing their muslces, the brothers use their brain to outwit the other. Sai Ramani seems to have been inspired heavily by the likes of Vaali and Azhagiya Thamizh Magan. With Jiiva at the helm of affairs. the strategy works to some extent. But post-intreval the pace stutters and it goes too much predictable, losing the element of suspense. The movie is set in a middle-class family consisting of parents (Kuyili and Ponvannan) and their twin sons -- Shiva (Jiiva), who works in a fish-market and Ashok (Jiiva, again), who is an advocate. Shiva is a honest and straightforward individual, while Ashok is an embodiment of evil hidden inside an innocent face. Both have romantic interests; Shweta (Divya Spandana) is Shiva’s sweetheart, while a lustful Ashok’s charms every woman he meets into his bed. The brothers lock horns after Ashok lures a girl with false pretences, with disastrous consequences. Jiiva has done his part well. he is there giving his best in every frame. Divya Spandhana sans glamour uses the opportunity well. Santhanam is entertaining in parts. But could have cut down on his double entendre. Ponvannan, Kuyili and Paandu among others form part of the cast. Mani Sharma disappoints with his loud musical score. Produced by S Parthi and S S Vasan, Singam Puli is lengthy, predictable and needs an urgent trimming. Bhavani STARRING : Sneha, KotaSrinivasa Rao, Vivek

BANNER :Shri Movie Makers DIRECTOR : G. Kicha MUSIC :Dhina LANGUAGE : Tamil RATING :

G. Kicha BHAVANI MOVIE REVIEW Known for playing the girl-next-door roles, Sneha opts to go the Vijayashanthi way in Bhavani. She plays a gritty policewoman, who fights all odds in the society. Produced and directed by Kiccha, the movie is inspired by yesteryear hit vyjayanthi ips which had several enjoyable moments. However, Kiccha seems to have missed out on knitting them together to make it an interesting affair and hence the movie proceeds in a predictable manner.

Bhavani (Sneha), a young officer from Andhra Pradesh takes charge as Assistant Commissioner of Police in Thirunelveli district. The onus is on her to end the illegal activities of one Sivalingam (Kota Srinivasa Rao), a baddie and an aspiring politician.

Bhavani comes across Surya (Sampath Kumar), who raise his voice against Sivalingam and has a bad past. An enraged Sivalingam ensures that Bhavani loses her job. Here, the cat and mouse game begins.

Sneha has given her best. She appears agile and fits the role. It is Sneha all through. Kota Srinivasa Rao shouts at the top of his voice while Sampath Kumar, Ilavarasu and Delhi Ganesh chip in with their best.

Dhina’s music is loud. Boopathy’s camera captures action sequences well. Though Bhavani is no patch to Vyjayanthi IPS, it has some interesting moments but at the end a sense of deja vu lingers.

Muthuku Muthaga STARRING : Natraj, Ilavarasu, Vikranth, Oviya, Monica, Saranya Ponvannan BANNER :Pandiyanadu Theatres DIRECTOR : Rasu Madhuravan MUSIC : Kavi Periya Thambi LANGUAGE : Tamil RATING :

MUTHUKKU MUTHAGA MOVIE REVIEW Matha, Pitha, Guru, Dheivam goes a popular saying. Perhaps inspired a bit too much by this, director Rasu Madhuravan has been churning out movies that give importance to the love and affection parents have on children. For, Rasu Madhuravan’s last week release Muthukku Muthaga is a take off from his earlier venture Mayandi Kudumbathar. The knot could have been a big hit if it was made into a television serial. Not just the knot, but the narration and characters too could remind you the family soaps we see from Monday to Friday on the television. But still, the director should be appreciated for trying his hands at a good subject when the industry is running behind commercial entertainers.Ilavarasu and Saranya are the father and mother of five boys (Vikranth, Natraj, Harish and others). Despite all odds, Ilavarasu and Saranya provide their sons the best they could. Years pass with love, affection and care. As everyone grow up and start to pursue their own lives, some problems crop up between the family members. At one point of time, everyone realise the importance of the parents and what follows is the climax.Ilavarasu and Saranya, the inevitable ‘appa’ and ‘amma’ of Tamil cinema these days, are at it again. Needless to say, they have come out with a commendable performance. Other characters, played by Vikranth, Natraj, Monica, Oviya and Singampuli, add credibility to the script. Songs are average while there is nothing to talk much about other technical departments. A good story, Muthukku Muthukka could have marked its presence felt in a much bigger way, had the director avoided the ‘serial’ feel. kullanari koottam STARRING : Vishnu, Remya Nambeesan BANNER :Darshan Creations DIRECTOR : Sribalaji MUSIC : V. Selvaganesh LANGUAGE : Tamil RATING :

KULLANARI KOOTTAM MOVIE REVIEW Making comedy movies is the most difficult task, those in the tinsel town say. Here in Kullanari Koottam, director Sri Balaji walks away with smiles in his maident attempt itself, by presenting a fresh, hilarious film. The movie has its flaws too. Forced scenes and some commercial compromises are to name a few. But still, Kullanari Koottam makes us to come out of the cinema hall with a positive feel, and there lies the success of the director and his team. The cast and crew are not new to Tamil cinema. While Vishnu is the Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu protagonist, Sri Balaji has worked as an assistant director in that film. Actors Appukutty, Suri and music composer Selvaganesh of VKK are also there in KNK.The film starts in Madurai, throwing light on Vetri aka Vetti (Vishnu), an MBA graduate who waits for job, without any worries in life. He has a father, who never compromises one thing in life- that none of his family member should have any contact with the police, even if it is an emergency. One day, while trying to recharge his father’s mobile, Vetri lands up in recharging Priya’s (Ramya Nambeesan). She is a Vellore-based girl, who studies in Madurai. Love blossoms between the two shorlty.Contrary to Vetri’s father, Priya’s father is on a mission. That his son-in-law should either be from the police department or from the Indian military. Those poses hurdle to the relationship between the lover couple. Vetri makes a vow to hold the hands of his ladylove. He hatches a plan to fulfil his future dad-in-law’s dream without hurting the sentiments of his father. But corrupt police officers come in between. How Vetri emerges triumphant is the crux of the film.Vishnu has utilised well the opportunity. The actor delivers goods, in a cool and composed way. Ramya Nambessan is beautiful and talented too. Others in the cast are okay while Selvaganesh’s music provides refreshment. On the whole, Kullanari Koottam is here to entertain the audience. Though there are some shortfalls here and there, there is no denying that the film is recommended for those who love to laugh out loud.

Sattapadi Kuttram STARRING : Sathyaraj, Vikranth, Bhanu, Harish Kalyan, Komal Sharma BANNER :Staar Makers DIRECTOR :S. A.Chandrasekhar MUSIC : Vijay Antony LANGUAGE : Tamil RATING :

SATTAPADI KUTTRAM MOVIE REVIEW A film you can pick a number of holes in, takes a dig at our legal system with its many loopholes. That’s how S A Chandrasekar’s Sattapadi Kuttram can be described in a nutshell. If there’s anything commendable about the film, it is the director’s guts to come down heavily on the ruling party. For the movie, with direct references at many a place and indirect references at some places, slams politicians in power and their wrong deeds. In other words, it’s like watching a street corner party meeting in this election season, addressed by a fiery speaker. Not just politicos, even fake godmen and corrupt police officers cannot escape Chadrasekar’s wrath. There is an overdose of flag-waving and at one point you too want to escape all this, but the cinema hall with its closed doors ensures that you can’t.Chandrabose (Sathyaraj), a police officer whose family members are killed by a politician (A Venkatesh), wears Che Guevara costumes, chain- smokes cigars and instills revolution in the minds of youngsters (Vikranth, Bhanu, Harish Kalyan, Sumathi etc). At one point of time, he is even able to convince judges, bureaucrats, police officers and the media, to put an end to evils in the country. Rowdies get killed, politicians are brought to book and the unearthed scam money is distributed among the public. And an egalitarian society is formed before the film comes to an end.Sathyaraj, the ‘Puratchi Thamizhan’s fire-brand style adds to the in- your- face rebelliousness. As is his wont, he mouths dialogues in high pitch to assert his views. Vikranth and Bhanu are adequate while a cameo by Livingston in Swami Nithyananda costume tickles the funny bone. You may not be in a mood to enjoy Vijay Antony’s music, especially the breezy Ededho... song. In the end Sattapadi Kuttram produced by Star Makers leaves many questions unanswered. Why did it ever get made, is one of those questions.Online Movie Review - http://www.cinemamatters.com/details.php?mid=51 Online Movie Gallery - http://www.cinemamatters.com/galleryimage.php?id=15697&artist_id=731 WWW.CINEMAMATTERS.COM

Says the actor, ‘I play Ashok, a lawyer and Siva, a fisherman. They are two men with different temperaments. It’s a pucca commercial film and the first release for me this year, so I am real excited. Divya and Soundarya are my two heroines. One character has the Kasimedu touch, a very local guy. People have liked me in such roles earlier after SMS became a hit. So I am hoping they will like this too’.

On comedy, he says, ‘the film has enough to spread smile on people. I team up with Santhanam again and it’s a laugh riot. In one place he has a woman get up which is hilarious. This is my second film with him.’ Qyuried about his other projects, he says, ‘I have Ko with KV Anand which should be out soon where I play a photojournalist. Then there is Rowdram and Nanban with Shankar, which is the remake of Three Idiots. So it’s quite an exciting year ahead for me’.

Singam Puli will go places: Sai Ramani Director Sai Ramani, who wielded the megaphone for Singam Puli, the Jiiva starrer, says, ‘the movie not just opened big but also won critical appreciation. There have been enquiries to do the movie in Telugu, Hindi and Kannada’. The movie featured Jiiva in two roles for the first time. Divya Spandhana and Soundarya played his heroines. Says the director, ‘I know Jiiva since the days I worked as an assistant director in E. When I narrated the story to him, he readily agreed’. For a hero to do a baddie is not an easy task. Jiiva had no hesitation in doing it. The end product came good. The movie had a big release and was screened in over 450 theatres. Today, it has collected good revenue in spite of examination and cricket fever’, he adds. Sai Ramani further says, ‘I wanted to do a commercial entertainer. I managed to do it. We have reduced the second half by scrapping a song. Hopefully the audience love it more now’.

Yuvan Shankar joins Billa team

e N

IN Entertainment (INE), part of Hinduja Group, which is backing Ajith starrer Billa 2 with Wide Angle Creations led by Suresh Balaje and George Pius, has confirmed Yuvan Shankar Raja as the music director.

Sunir Kheterpal, CEO, IN Entertainment, says, ‘With Chakri Toleti coming on board to helm directorial reigns of Billa 2, pre-production work has gathered steam. We are currently meeting with key technicians and holding auditions for the remaining cast. We should be able to announce key cast and crew by March 15 and we plan to commence principal photography for the film in== the first week of May 2011.’

Confirming his association with the film, Yuvan Shankar Raja says, ‘I have been looking forward to work with Ajith and Wide Angle Creations. With INE and Chakri on board and dates confirmed, I am delighted to be a part of the Billa franchise and will endeavour to present something unique, which will take the legacy of Billa (2007) further.’ A j i t h

adds, ‘Development team at INE in Mumbai is cur-

energy and vigour required for this project.Yuvan is an integral part of the Billa franchise and all of us are glad to have him on board.’ Billa was earlier made into Tamil with Superstar Rajnikanth as the remake of Amitabh Bachchan starrer Don. The film was remade in 2007 again into Tamil with Ajith playing the role essayed by Rajnikanth. However, unlike the Hindi remake with Shah Rukh Khan, where ending of the film was changed to keep the lead protagonist alive, Billa maintained the same story as the original film. Billa 2 is therefore not a sequel but is being designed as a prequel to Billa, wherein the film will focus on the journey of how David became Billa. Yuvan all set to rock he latest that we hear is that Yuvanshankar Raja has completed scoring music for Mankatha that stars Ajith and Trisha and directed by Venkat Prabhu. Venkat Pravbhu has tweeted recently that ‘Six songs composed!!! Three songs recorded!! There will be a promo song!!! One club mix and Mankatha theme music!! 9 tracks!! U1 rocks.’ Plans are on to launch the songs in a gala manner. It may be recalled that Yuvan Shankar and Venkat Prabhu share a good rapport and it was evident in the way songs had come in their earlier ventures Chennai 28, Saroja and Goa. Hence expectations are high on Mankatha audio. Sources close to Yuvan said, ‘the songs have come really good and it would please all Ajith fans’. The shooting for the movie is almost complete and only few portions need to be canned. Ajith is said to be upbeat at the way Mankatha has turned up so far. WWW.CINEMAMATTERS.COM

Rahman’s large heart Many thought A R Rahman would be second time lucky at the 83rd Oscars for his If I Rise number from 127 Hours it was not to be. The Mozart of Madras is still cool and not bothered about losing the award to Randy Newman for his composition ‘We Belong Together’ from Toy Story 3.Rahman had always maintained that his chances of winning an Oscar were tough. He had said that the Oscar nomination came as a surprise to him. Reportedly he had also mentioned that the awards were highly competitive and there were ‘so many factors’.True to his largehearted, appreciative nature, the maestro tweeted on his microblogging site, citing the dilemma of two composers’ sons as follows:What a night... My son Ameen and I saw Toy Story 3 a couple of months back. When the Academy Award nominations for songs came in he said he wanted Toy Story’s song to win... Well... It came so naturally from him... At the same time, Randy Newman’s son Amos Newman, who is my manager in the US, wanted If I Rise to win because he was passionately behind the production, organizing the whole thing.

When A R Rahman got angry A R Rahman, who has emerged the hot property across the globe after winning Oscars and Grammy, is now the only composer who keeps the rights of all the songs that he composes with him in India. Recently a soft drink commercial featuring Katrina Kaif has used his tune from Slumdog Millionaire. The Mozart of Madras claims this has been done without his knowledge and is all set to initiate legal action. Rahman has reportedly ordered his lawyers to look into the matter, and his officials are already in talks with T-series, the record company, to find out how the track could have gone to the mango drink label without the composer signing off on it. ‘Yes, our legal team has sought for an explanation on how the track made its way out. As of now they have not responded. We are definitely contemplating action,’ an aide Rahman was quoted as saying. WWW.CINEMAMATTERS.COM

Stars talk about World Cup World Cup cricket fever has gripped the whole nation. Discussions and debates on India’s chances in the event are common at street-corners it can be said. Kollywood is also not far from it. One could hear actors, actresses and other technicians expressing their opinions on the prospects of the ‘Men in Blue’ in the mega event and some even put forward ideas/strategies for the team to be successful. The loss Team India suffered the other night against South Africa is a wake-up call. It is time the players pulled up the socks and be prepared mentally and physically, they say in chorus. Check out what the stars had to say Jiiva, an ardent cricket-fan and Team India supporter says, ‘ Indians looked on course for a massive score against South Africa till the 43rd over at Nagpur. They lost the way as the batsmen started playing some rash shots. It is a lesson for us to play sensibly. We have a good batting lineup. If they combine well and a post a big total batting first, victory is ours’. Echoing the same is Nithin Satyaa, who was part of Chennai-28, a movie that was based on cricket. He says, ‘India should include R Ashwin for their match against the West Indies. With Sachin Tendulkar playing well, the rest of the batsmen should rally around him and give him necessary support. They should know how to use the batting powerplay well’. Ramana, who is the skipper of the Kollywood cricket team, feels, ‘Dhoni should be more proactive. He should give a chance for Sehwag and Tendulkar to roll their arms over. With the dry wickets in India providing turn, he should have two spinners in the side’. The real test begins from the quarterfinals and India should play from their skin. The way Sri Lanka and Australia are playing, we have a tough test ahead, he adds. Actor Srikanth, says, ‘despite my busy schedule, I keep track of the scores. I am confident that Tendulkar will reach 100 centuries in this edition of the World Cup. Dhoni and his men should get their act right and win the cup. It would be a perfect gift for the batting maestro, who has been serving the cause of the country for over two decades’. Music composer Ramesh Vinayakam, who is thrilled with the Indian display so far barring the match against South Africa, says, ‘We have the potential to beat any side. Hopefully we forget the drubbing we received the other night and concentrate on the game and win the remaining matches. Four wins from four matches would mean the cup is ours’.
