Zeolites are natural volcanic minerals that are mined in certain
parts of the world. When volcanoes erupt, molten lava and thick ash pour out. Because many volcanoes are located on an island or near an ocean, this lava and ash often flows into the sea. They are further characterized by an ability to lose and gain water reversibly and to exchange some of their constituent elements without major change of structure.
What makes zeolites so amazing is the fact that it’s not only
one of the few negatively-charged minerals found in nature, but it also has a very unique structure. Zeolites have large, vacant spaces––or cages––that allow space for large, positively charged ions to be attracted to it, then trapped and eliminated from the body.
The beginning of the use of zeolites dates back to the 50s of
last century when the properties of this natural mineral were first examined.
Origin and history
of Zeolites
Identification of zeolite as a mineral goes back to 1756, when a
Swedish mineralogist, Alex Fredrik Cronstedt, collected some crystals from a copper mine in Sweden. He found that upon rapidly heating the material stilbite, it produced large amounts of steam from water that had been adsorbed by the material. Based on this, he called the material zeolite, from the Greek words meaning “boiling stones,� because of ability to froth when heated to about 200 C. Following Cronstedt’s findings, zeolites were considered as minerals found in volcanic rocks for a period of 200 years.
Natural zeolites form where volcanic rocks and ash layers react
with alkaline groundwater. Zeolites also crystallize in postdepositional environment sover periods ranging from thousands to millions of years in shallow marine basins. Naturally occurring zeolites are rarely pure and are contaminated to varying degrees by other minerals, metals, quartz, etc.
Most of the initial research on the use of zeolites in agriculture
took place in the 1960s in Japan. A brief review of the literature has pointed out that Japanese farmers have used zeolite rock over years to control the moisture content and to increase the pH of acidic volcanic soils. Ion-exchange properties of zeolites can be utilized in agriculture because of their large porosity and high cation-exchange capacity. They can be used as both carriers of nutrients and a medium to free nutrients

Uses of natural zeolite Their special molecular structure that allows the filtration of harmful substances and even of radiations gave them the label of molecular strainers. They can act as catalysts in a large number of chemical reactions, inclusively in the reaction of oxidation or neutralization of heavy metals ions. In various processing stages, zeolite can be used in agriculture, zootechnics, chemical industry, oil industry, constructions, water and air purification processes, pharmaceutical industry, cosmetics and many other domains. Only few other natural rocks have such a various range of uses. Mineralogical studies conducted on the volcanic tuffs subject to the superior exploitation of zeolites demonstrate that the entire mass of the rock have been subject to zeolitization during the process of diagenesis. Most of the samples collected and subject to mineralogical analyses show that the zeolites are present in proportion of more than 95%, which leads us to the conclusion that the deposit has a significant value.
