The JH Traveler team’s #OnlyinJH recommendations: “I absolutely love cross-country skiing up to Jenny Lake and back with my family. Pack a picnic and a camera and it’s the perfect day!” Mindy Duquette Sales Director & Contributing Photographer
“Here’s a good itinerary on your day off from skiing: Take a morning half-day snowmobile trip to Granite Hot Springs and enjoy soaking your ski legs in the 112°F (44°C) pool. You’ll be back in time to eat lunch at the National Museum of Wildlife Art and enjoy exploring the exhibits. Finish up with an afternoon tour of the Elk Refuge via sleigh ride. Then, if you still have gas in the tank, eat dinner in town and two-step the night away at the Cowboy Bar.” Latham Jenkins, Publisher & Chief Photographer
Real Talk “The Snake River is not a loop so please don’t ask your raft guide if you can leave some belongings you don’t want to get wet on the side of the river to be picked up when you come back around.” Geoff Sharp, Sales Associate
“Jackson Hole offers beautiful wildflower displays during June and July. In the summer, a hike to Goodwin or Ski Lake means crossing vibrant meadows alive with Indian paintbrush, columbine, and lupine in full bloom.” Kirsten Rue, Managing Editor & Contributing Writer
“My husband and I like to motorcycle to Kelly, sometimes weaving—very carefully—through herds of bison crossing the road. Bison look awfully big up close and from the back of a motorcycle!” Liz Prax, Copy Editor
Real Talk “There is no actual hole here ... a ‘Hole’ refers to a high-altitude valley, which is where Jackson, WY, happens to be located.” Belmont Diefenshooter, Longtime Intern
“Catch the sunrise, a storm cresting the Tetons, or stargaze at the base of Shadow Mountain. It’s a short drive and you’ll see the Wild West unfold before your eyes.” Matt Deehan, Sales Associate
“My kids and I love to pick huckleberries along the shores of Leigh Lake and use them in our pancakes when we go camping!” Megan Jenkins, Sales Associate
“When hiking the extensive trail system at Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve in Grand Teton National Park, I find myself immersed in my surroundings and the creative inspiration of the natural world.” Cristine Wehner, Creative Director
“My perfect summer day is a mountain bike ride on Munger Mountain followed by a beer at the ’Coach!” Jessica Bilotta, Sales Associate
TRAVELER TIP NATURE NEWS Stay connected to Jackson Hole all year! Founder of The Hole Hiking Experience Cathy Shill shares monthly news: nature highlights, animal sightings, and a tour suggestion. Subscribe for delivery straight to your inbox! holehike.com/naturenews.html © 2014 Jackson Hole Traveler, published by Circ Inc. When you’re in Jackson Hole, Darwinism is in full effect. The large animals can—and will—run over you. Don’t try to sit on their backs or ride them. Don’t run, skip, or ski up to the edge of anything you cannot see over. Weather is extreme, so no standing on an outcropping during a summer lightning storm or licking a flag pole at 20 below. If you steal an antler from the Town Square arches, you’ll incur bad luck for 20 years. Should you need more advice on what not to do, see jacksonholetraveler.com/article/what-not-to-do/

TOP ATTRACTIONS 1. THE TETONS The Tetons rise dramatically in jagged spikes over a lush and undulating valley. These are “what mountains are supposed to look like,” Theodore Roosevelt once remarked of the spectacular range. Discover the iconic peaks, unique geological history, and pristine wilderness of Grand Teton National Park on p. 26. 2. AERIAL TRAM The Aerial Tram—the unofficial mascot of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort—zips passengers to the top of Rendezvous Mountain in nine minutes flat. That’s 4,139 vertical feet! Hop on board for superlative skiing, stunning views, or both (p. 36).

3. TOWN SQUARE Bathed by the neon honky-tonk sign of the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar and bordered by four quirky elk-antler arches, the Town Square forms Jackson’s retail and artistic core. We give you the lowdown on experiencing our cultural crossroads on p. 54. 4. NATIONAL ELK REFUGE You won’t need binoculars to view the thousands of elk wintering on this swathe of protected land set beneath the Gros Ventre mountain range. Each year, elk gather on the National Elk Refuge to feed, scramble for dominance with extraordinary antler clashes, and rear their young. See it by sleigh! (p. 49) 5. SNOW KING MOUNTAIN Find your mountain legs with a hearty hike or take a quick chairlift ride to the summit of Snow King. The vast, windswept panorama of Jackson Hole and the Tetons provides a fantastic orientation to the valley. Snow King in all seasons: p. 48.

THE MILLION DOLLAR COWBOY BAR You can’t miss this landmark! Push through the double swinging doors and head back in time at the world-famous saloon. Perched on a saddle barstool with stiff drink in hand, you can soak in the atmosphere of knotty-pine décor and denizens stomping their boots in time to the live band.

Mountain Weather Tips with local weatherman Jim Woodmencey The old cliché that Jackson Hole has “eight months of winter and three months of bad skiing” isn’t too far from the truth. Winters are revered for storms that bring copious snowfall, blanketing the Tetons with light powder. However, it is the summer season we cherish for its welcoming warmth, green hillsides, and generally more stable weather—even if only for a brief period of time. Jackson Hole has seen its extremes of weather in every season, but keep this in mind: It is the “above normal” and “below normal” weather that makes our averages. Each day, each week, each month, each season, and every year can be wildly different. Most visitors will find that we have a relatively dry climate here in the Jackson Hole valley, averaging less than 16 inches of rainfall per year. The mountains, however, receive three or four times as much precipitation annually. This equates to
more snowfall in the winter and more summer rain showers and thunderstorms over the mountains. Temperatures can vary widely any time of the year, especially when you change elevation. We have more than 7,000 feet of elevation difference to consider between the valley floor and the top of the Grand Teton, which means that hikers, climbers, and skiers need to dress the part, as weather conditions can change quickly with changes in elevation. Snow, colder temperatures, and winter-like weather usually begin by mid-October and last into mid-April. Summer never really kicks in with highs in the 70s and 80s until July and August. The other months—our spring and fall—can be a potpourri of conditions that might resemble a nice summer day or require a little snow shoveling. For current conditions visit mountainweather.com.
MY MANTRA IS: “CLIMATE IS WHAT YOU EXPECT. WEATHER IS WHAT YOU GET!” Get your bearings at jacksonholetraveler.com

HIGH ALTITUDE HEALTH TIPS with Dr. Jim Little Jr.
How can I prepare for high-altitude conditions? Most people will adapt relatively well to the altitude on the valley floor, which is 6,300 feet above sea level. The people who tend to have the biggest trouble often have other medical problems with their hearts or lungs. Even healthy visitors can occasionally get into trouble with the altitude during an activity like mountain climbing or skiing where additional elevation is gained. How can I protect myself from altitude sickness? 1. Stay well hydrated. Due to our dry climate here, it’s very easy to get dehydrated. 2. Limit your alcohol intake. 3. Make sure you get plenty of rest and transition gradually from the valley floor to higher elevations. What does altitude sickness feel like? The most common adverse reaction we see around here is acute mountain sickness. The symptoms are described as being similar to a hangover: headache, nausea, fatigue, and sometimes a little shortness of breath. Generally, those symptoms are worse when you combine higher elevations and exertion. It’s not unusual that we’ll have someone who flies here in the early morning and then goes straight to the top of the mountain to ski. If you feel that you might be suffering from acute mountain sickness, descend to the valley floor, stay

hydrated, get some rest, and most of the symptoms will pass. If you are having trouble adapting to Jackson, you shouldn’t go to Yellowstone—most of the Yellowstone plateau is significantly higher than the elevation in Jackson. What should I do in case I’m still not feeling well? It’s definitely good to see a doctor who can evaluate and verify that you’re not having more serious problems. Unrelated cardiac problems or other medical issues have symptoms that can definitely overlap with altitude sickness. Other health risks to watch out for … One thing we see often is significant sunburn, as the higher elevation here means that there is less atmosphere between you and the sun. Take precautions to make sure you protect yourself. Dehydration is a very common one, too. Most of the other problems we see are related to sports injuries. Wearing helmets when skiing, mountain biking, riding horses, or snowboarding may protect you from serious injury. Wear layers, too, to be prepared for drops in temperature. ST. WELCOME TO THE LIVING WEST Over the past century, residents of Jackson Hole have worn a lot of hats, but it’s the cowboy hat that’s never really come off.
Fox Hastings, national champion, rodeo bulldogger and steer roper, c. 1920s-30s.
When you visit this special valley, you join a long line of “dudes”—folks who’ve come out West to try on a certain style of living beneath the open sky. Traversing the Teton Pass on horseback or bumping along in a buggy over rough roads, dudes came to ride the range, pitch hay, and camp out under the stars. Today, Jackson Hole’s pioneer spirit is still kicking, and many experiences abound for hardy visitors to put their best boot forward and “live the West.”
A Little History Robert Sass (left) and Herbert Baker. Both worked for the Bureau of Reclamation on the Jackson Lake Dam. No date.
Both the town of Jackson and the valley surrounding it, Jackson Hole, were named for David E. Jackson, an itinerant trader in the employ of a fur company, but the town of Jackson was not established until decades later in 1894.

These folks faced a hard existence and eked out a living through a combination of cattle ranching, farming, and big-game hunting. Despite the hardship, many of the earliest settlers gave their names to towns, roads, and landmarks in Jackson Hole, and their descendants still ranch or reside within the valley. Although the nearby national parks have always drawn sightseers, Jackson Hole’s tourist trade truly took root in the 1920s, when dude ranches like the still-operating Triangle X Ranch began inviting visitors to stay. Since then, times have changed, but the spirit of Jackson Hole remains true to its original residents. THIS IS THE LAST OF THE OLD WEST, AFTER ALL.
DO
Ways to “Dude” EXPLORE THE TOWN SQUARE The historic nexus of the cowboy lifestyle and the tourism trade is still evident in the town of Jackson today, with well-grooved pedestrian boardwalks and Western-style storefronts.
HOP ON A STAGECOACH Pulled by an enormous pair of Clydesdale horses, the red-andyellow local stagecoach is modeled after the original 19th century coaches that traversed the territories carrying mail and supplies. Rides depart from the Town Square and run for about 10 minutes each. Stagecoaches seat up to six, so pile in with the whole family and take in the mountain breeze.
FREE! JACKSON HOLE SHOOTOUT Gathering every day at 6 p.m. at the northeast corner of the Town Square, spectators have the chance to witness the longest-running gunfight in the United States. This free show is full of outlaws, stern sheriffs, and a re-creation of the rowdy crews that once rode pell-mell through the valley—and still do. The Shootout is fun for the whole family. Don’t worry: They’re only firing blanks.
VISIT HISTORICAL SITES Some of the valley’s original homesteaders left plenty of traces behind—like a ghostly brand on the wilderness. For a glimpse of the structures they built to shelter from the elements, drive out to Mormon Row or check out the Menors Ferry Historical Site inside Grand Teton National Park. Both provide an indelible and highly picturesque image of pioneer life. Pretty rough and tumble, too!
RIDE WITH REAL COWBOYS For five generations the Mill Iron Ranch (millironranch.net) has been known for guiding guests through the breathtaking scenery of Jackson Hole. Family-owned and operated since the early 1900s, this tradition continues to mesmerize guests with untouched scenery that will stun your senses and make you feel like you are part of the Old West. Customize your experience with two-hour, half-day, or full-day wildlife, photography, or horseback fishing trips. Our trail rides and pack trips accommodate all levels of riders. After a day of riding, a worldfamous T-bone steak dinner at our ranch hits the spot! 3495 E Horse Creek, 10.5 miles south of Jackson | 307 733 6390 or 888 808 6390
BAR T-5 COVERED WAGON COOKOUT Make like the original homesteaders and ride to dinner in a horse-drawn covered wagon, rumbling up a dirt road into the mountains. Then, disembark and gather ’round for an evening of delicious camp-style food, cowboy songs, and horseback-riding performers in traditional garb. Your delightful evening ends as the setting sun glimmers in the western sky. Bar T-5 (bart5.com), Jackson Hole’s original chuckwagon, celebrates its 41st season this year. The Grand Teton is 13,770 feet high and is the secondhighest peak in Wyoming. Its first ascent is disputed: Two climbers claimed the first summit in 1872, but the group that gained the top in 1898 cast doubt upon their story. Even before that, Native Americans built a structure of rocks called the Enclosure near the summit. Thousands of locals and visitors now successfully climb the iconic mountain every year. Our catch-all guide to your perfect day(s) in the Tetons.
GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK
T HE T E TO N S The world-famous Tetons are a young mountain range. Ten million years ago, the stony peaks began to rise along the Teton fault line in what is known as a “fault block.” Picture tons upon tons of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock vaulting up and forward while the valley of Jackson Hole sank (and continues to sink) in response. This created the sheer relief the Shoshone dubbed “Teewinot,” or “many pinnacles.” Intense glaciation then proceeded to sculpt the range into the rugged spines you see today.
GRAND TETON PARK FLOATS WITH BARKER-EWING “Ten of the most beautiful miles of river in the world,” and that’s why we run our float trips only inside Grand Teton National Park. Old Faithful (17 miles from West Thumb)
This will be your introduction to a variety of geothermal features: bubbling springs of finely milled mud, multi-colored pools, and steaming lakeside cones. Located right on the shore of vast Yellowstone Lake, this stop includes the Thumb Paint Pots, the deep blue Abyss Pool, and Fishing Cone, where early visitors joked one could catch a fish in the lake and then dunk it directly in boiling water to make dinner.
Guaranteed to be a highlight of your day in Yellowstone, be sure to set aside a large chunk of time to explore the Old Faithful Inn, catch one of the famous geyser’s on-time eruptions, and explore the wondrous Upper Geyser Basin. Inside the new visitor center, you’ll find posted signs predicting the next Old Faithful eruption, so grab a seat and wait for the impressive sight of up to 8,400 gallons of scalding water reaching heights topping 184 feet. The monumental Old Faithful Inn, completed in 1904, is the largest log structure in the world. Its massive 65-foot ceiling, stone fireplace, and gnarled railings made from local lodgepole pine ensure its stature as one of the most legendary buildings of the American frontier. The inn also features shops and restaurants.

Midway Geyser Basin (8 miles) Known as Hell’s Half Acre, a brief stop at Midway Geyser Basin is 100% worth it. Carved into soft rhyolite stone by the Yellowstone River, the canyon is where visitors can truly see how Yellowstone garnered its name, with a rainbow of colors (including yellow!) in the exposed rock descending to the canyon floor. The tumbling waters of Lower Falls spiral from a height twice that of Niagara Falls. This thundering vista can be enjoyed from Lookout Point, Red Rock Point, and Artist Point.

How does a whitewater trip introduce visitors to Jackson Hole from a new angle? “What better way to see any new area than from a river! Jackson can be crazy in the summertime, with traffic in the Town Square and lines of cars in Yellowstone. Getting out on the river is a great change of pace for any visitor. The cold water is refreshing for hikers, climbers, campers, bikers, etc. Also, spending two hours on the river with any guide is like having a sit-down with some of the best concierges in Jackson!” Nate Mintz, Whitewater Guide

“After over a decade of guiding natural history programs around the world, one of my most powerful memories was witnessing a courtship display of Calliope hummingbirds in Grand Teton National Park. Each family member found a different joy, but the highlight for me were the tears of joy from a visually impaired child when she saw these beautiful birds perched on a branch just feet away. This was more humbling and inspiring than watching a moose or grizzly bear.” Jared Baecker, Wildlife Guide

What is special about a day skiing the backcountry, and why is a guide necessary? “My perfect day is a bluebird powder day skiing untracked snow. A guide can show you terrain that would take you years to learn on your own. Guides can teach good backcountry etiquette, as well as snow structure and how to move through high-alpine terrain smoothly. I think meeting interesting people from around the world, being at the top of the mountain every morning, and skiing ‘the goods’ make each day special.” Dave Miller, Backcountry Ski Guide 32

What kind of wildlife can be spotted while rafting the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park? “In the national park we frequently see moose, deer, eagles, osprey, and a variety of smaller birds. Less frequently we will spot a fox, coyote, a family of otter, or maybe even the occasional bear. Over the past eight or nine years I have been lucky enough to see five different grizzly bears! On evening trips we can count on seeing the ever-popular beaver dining on the riverbanks or swimming and diving near its lodges.” Reed Finlay, River Guide BARKER-EWING FLOAT TRIPS 800 365 1800 | 307 733 1800 | barkerewing.com

WILD THINGS OF WYOMING 307 690 6784 wildthingsofwyoming.com What are the benefits of exploring the valley on foot? How do hiking tours open up different ways of experiencing the wilderness here?
What most “wows” your guests during their tours in Yellowstone National Park?
“Hiking allows you to be within nature, making the most of your experience. Leaving your vehicle is a huge reward. As you learn about this amazing ecosystem, you utilize your senses to align with the Earth. At the end of your journey, you have connected to a sense of the landscape, the animals, the richness of the natural world, and a sense of rejuvenation. All tours are customized to your interests and ability. Join us!” Cathy Shill, Owner & Hiking Guide
“There are so many things about the world’s first national park that amaze us all, but guests joining one of our Yellowstone safaris often most appreciate the fact that Yellowstone is still very much as it was hundreds of years ago. It remains the most active geothermal area on the planet and offers the same diversity of wildlife and spectacular scenery that early explorers would have experienced in the 1800s.” Kurt Johnson, Naturalist Guide
Beyond catching fish, how do you know that your guests have had a successful trip with you? “A fishing guide’s barometer of client success is best measured by two things: how well that person was able to relax, therefore allowing the fishing to come more naturally (if you are relaxed, you are not too concerned about how tough the fishing might be) and, most importantly, how much he or she learns from you. Fly fishing is a sport of unlimited possibilities, hence continuous learning is what you should crave the most.” Scott Smith, Fishing Guide GRAND TETON FLY FISHING 225 W Broadway, Jackson 307 690 4347 | grandtetonflyfishing.com

Hiking Trails If feet are your main method of transportation, you’ll be delighted to learn that the extensive hiking trail system has expanded at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. In addition to new trails connecting the tops of the Aerial Tram and Bridger Gondola through Tensleep Bowl, the trail crew recently completed the beautiful Wildflower Trail, which links the Lower Faces trails from the bottom of the mountain all the way up to Casper. Great views of the valley, Aerial Tram, Bridger Gondola, and wildflowers can be soaked in to the fullest, as the trail boasts a number of benches at several scenic points. There is even a picnic table that offers shade and one of the best views around. You can expect this trail to be about two hours round trip.
There is a wonderful variety of dining opportunities in Teton Village, from delicious foodtruck-style tacos to gourmet dinners with a view. Stop by Nick Wilson’s at the base of the tram for lunch on the patio or enjoy grab-and-go tacos and margaritas at the Tin Can Cantina, located at the base of the Bridger Gondola. PRESERVING THE WEST Tucked a block away from the Town Square, Cayuse Western Americana (cayusewa.com) has earned a reputation as a mandatory stop for savvy collectors of the American West. The New York Times noted Cayuse’s expertise on the genre in their recent article, “36 Hours in Jackson Hole.” Our carefully curated selection of antique Native American, cowboy, and national park art and handwork is unmatched. With an emphasis on condition and authenticity, Cayuse has brought together bits, spurs, saddles, and chaps. In addition, the gallery houses an incredible selection of antique Navajo and Zuni turquoise, as well as vintage silver and gold buckles worn by cowboys and cowgirls of the past. Early art and photographs spanning the vast landscapes and inhabitants of the West grace the walls, while beaded horse trappings and clothing of the Northern Plains tribes bring this art to life. A handful of the best contemporary artisans continue the legacy of fine silver and gold buckles and jewelry. 255 N Glenwood, Jackson 307 739 1940

Recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and the U.S. Department of the Interior, Jackson Hole’s wilderness represents some of the most renowned natural beauty and ecological significance on the planet. The economic benefits our state’s residents enjoy are certainly rivaled only by the health and lifestyle benefits. NORTH OF JACKSON Price range: $750,000 to $20 million The Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis Club blends the rugged West with the country club lifestyle and boasts a Robert Trent Jones II-designed golf course. Many of these subdivisions are tucked off main roads and have Snake River access.

ASK A REALTOR What is the most significant trend in Jackson Hole real estate today?
What development or trend are you most excited about in the coming year?
“The market recovery gained a lot of strength in 2013. We’re seeing the inventory of single-family homes (condos, homes, and town homes) at its lowest level in almost 25 years. Sales prices are strengthening, with the median sales price up 21% year over year (first quarter of 2013 vs. first quarter of 2014). However, there are still some good values out there if you know where to look.” Fred Harness | 307 690 0417
“Personally and professionally, I’m really excited about the reopening of the Snake River Sporting Club, a private club just a few minutes south of town. The combination of sporting pursuits available to members—a Tom Weiskopf 18-hole golf course along the Snake River, 6 miles of private Snake River access, horse rides and equestrian activities, paddle tennis, cross-country skiing, Frisbee golf, a 3-D archery course, etc., all right next to millions of acres of national forest—is unmatched in Jackson Hole. I’m enthusiastic about the club and the real estate opportunities we’re representing here.” Chip Marvin | 307 690 2657 OBSIDIAN REAL ESTATE | 110 E Broadway, Jackson | jhobsidian.com

3 Days of Adventurous Fun! DAY 1 | GUIDED ATV TOUR AND EVENING SCENIC FLOAT ATV: This trip will start 30 minutes north of Jackson in the Bridger-Teton National Forest. It includes about two hours on the trail with great mountain scenery. An excellent option for your family’s first backcountry experience. (Children 16 and older are welcome to participate.) Float: A 10-mile scenic float trip glides along the Snake River allowing you to see beautiful forests, seasonal wildflowers, and possibly spot deer, elk, moose, bald eagles, and other wildlife. View the natural splendor of Grand Teton National Park with the Teton Range as your spectacular background.
DAY 2 | WHITEWATER RAFTING AND SUNSET WILDLIFE TOUR WITH DINNER AT SIGNAL MOUNTAIN LODGE Whitewater: The Snake River Canyon is rich in geological history and your guide will point out some of the features that make this canyon unique. You might see river otters, osprey, and bald eagles during your trip. A lucky few may even catch a glimpse of a mountain goat, mule deer, elk, or even a grizzly or black bear! Sunset Wildlife Tour: Roam the Antelope Flats in search of bison and, well, antelope. Experience a bit of history at the Shane Cabins and see what early life in Jackson Hole might have been like. Stop at Signal Mountain Lodge for dinner on the deck with spectacular views of the Teton Range. Following dinner, head back to Jackson along the wooded Moose-Wilson Road, home to the North American moose.
DAY 3 | FLY FISHING ON THE SNAKE RIVER Join us for a guided fishing trip on the Snake River through Grand Teton National Park on board our ClackaCraft drift boat. This all-inclusive trip saves you both time and money. We’ll provide all rods and reels, flies, and fishing equipment.
