“I was my son’s age the last time I visited Yellowstone. Today I’m standing at Old Faithful again, my four-year-old on my shoulders. Both of us staring in wide-eyed wonder as it leaps impossibly high into the air, painting clouds in the clear blue sky. After all these years, I realize it still has the power to make me feel like a little kid again. ”

Welcome to West Y ellowstone The year-round gateway to Yellowstone Country—West Yellowstone, Montana. Activities abound, and adventure will be found in every season. Yellowstone’s familiar name conjures visions of natural wonders such as geysers, waterfalls, lakes and streams, grizzly bears, bison, trout and wolves. While here, we encourage you to explore all the area has to offer: Yellowstone National Park, our local community and all the natural wonders west of the park. Long summer days offer unlimited access to the splendor of the high country, be it a scenic drive, hiking or horseback riding through flower-covered mountain meadows, whitewater rafting or fishing in crystal-clear rivers. The warmth, beauty and serenity of fall offer vibrant autumn foliage against the evergreen backdrop of our abundant forests. Crisp, cool nights and warm, sunny afternoons are especially perfect when combined with the sounds of bugling elk and honking geese. In winter, Yellowstone has a magic all its own. Snowcovered landscapes, frosty trees and steamy geysers create a wondrous setting. Yellowstone’s geyser-fed rivers remain unfrozen, creating a natural winter refuge for thousands of waterfowl, including majestic trumpeter swans. Breathtaking tours by snowcoach and snowmobile offer indelible memories of this very special season in the park. Snowmobilers and cross-country skiers explore the millions of acres of public lands outside the park, too,
while nearby downhill ski resorts give visitors a variety of thrills and challenges. In spring, the land awakens. Trout are hungry, flowers poke through the snow, birds return from winter habitats— filling the air with song—and wildlife bear their young. Enjoy Yellowstone while you’re here. With every type of amenity available, you’ll find West Yellowstone the perfect base for visiting the entire area. For information on lodging, special events and activities in the area, call the West Yellowstone Chamber of Commerce at (406) 646-7701, visit our official website at destinationyellowstone.com, or stop by the Visitor Center located just one block west of the park entrance.
T raveler Tip s Getting Here Ground traffic enters West Yellowstone from three directions: from the north (Bozeman and Big Sky), take Hwy 191 South. From the south (Idaho Falls or Salt Lake City) follow Hwy 20 North. And if you are traveling through Yellowstone National Park, follow Hwy 20 from Madison Junction to the west entrance of the park. Note: The west gate is open to regular auto travel in the summer months only, from midApril through late November. The West Yellowstone Airport is open with scheduled air service by SkyWest and Delta Connection from June through September. The closest airport in the winter months is in Bozeman, Montana (Gallatin Field Airport), 90 miles north of West Yellowstone. Bozeman is served by Allegiant, Delta, 10 | Destination Yellowstone Guidebook 2013
United Express and Horizon Airlines and is a 2- to 2½-hour drive. Rental cars available at Bozeman include Avis, Budget, Hertz and National. Karst Stage, Inc. also offers regular shuttle service (reservations required) from the Bozeman airport to West Yellowstone in the winter and service by reservation request in the summers. Another option for flyers is the Idaho Falls Airport, approximately 110 miles south of West Yellowstone. Idaho Falls, Idaho, is serviced by Allegiant, SkyWest and Horizon Airlines. Car rental agencies are available, and Salt Lake Express offers ground transportation with reservations.
Climate Mountain weather is always unpredictable. A 70-degree, sunny day can turn into a tumultuous storm
complete with wind, rain and snow in a minute. It pays to always be prepared for cooler weather while enjoying the open blue sky and sunny days that have come to make West Yellowstone such a great place to visit. Even in the heart of summer, mornings can be chilly, averaging around 50 degrees. Layering clothes will help keep you comfortable all day. As the day wears on, temperatures rise into the 70s and 80s in July or August. In the winter, the same rules apply, only thicker, warmer layers are paramount. Temperatures can be among the coldest in the Lower 48, often reaching from the 20s and 30s during the day to below zero at night. You should also have a water-resistant, windproof outer layer. In fall and spring, crisp mornings are frequently followed by cool, brilliant days. destinationyellowstone.com

If Yellowstone is your destination, West Yellowstone is your base camp—your place to restore and explore while provisioning and planning for breathtaking journeys into America’s first national park. It’s what Yellowstone’s early explorers did. Imagine members of the Washburn-Doane expedition of 1870 mesmerized by their firsthand experience of the magnificent wonders they witnessed setting up camp at dusk where the misty Firehole and Gibbon rivers joined the trout-filled Madison. Legend has it that at their Madison Junction encampment, 14 miles from West Yellowstone into what is now the park interior, the group sat around a wilderness campfire and dreamed up the idea of preserving the area for future generations. Though more than 140 years have passed since that fateful eve, the setting remains the same. In a sense, West Yellowstone has always been here, it was just waiting to be discovered. Upon the establishment of the park, West Yellowstone quickly became known as the “gateway to wonderland”—a respite for tourists with steam trunks and valets clamoring from trains rolling into the grand depot and dining lodge, which today is the heart of West Yellowstone’s historic district and still bustles with the same exhilaration. Then and now, the free-roaming wildlife, boiling caldrons, destinationyellowstone.com
and plunging waterfalls of Yellowstone await, while West Yellowstone welcomes. Boasting proximity, the town has a street named “Boundary” for a reason. It is that close to Yellowstone. It is also the nearest gateway community to the pulse of the park. The iconic Old Faithful geyser is just 30 miles from West Yellowstone’s gate. Ideally situated and built on legacy, insiders know West Yellowstone is the base camp of modern-day explorers. Yellowstone and the surrounding area is so big that it can easily take days to conquer it all. West Yellowstone gives you accommodations to rest for the night, places to dine, gather up picnic supplies and fill your water bottles. There are ample opportunities to get expert guidance from locals about off-the-beaten-path surprises for your next day’s adventure, in or out of the park. The activities are so endless—from rodeo, live theater, kayaking, mountain biking, fly fishing and hiking in the summer to cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, dog sledding and snowcoach as well as snowmobiling park tours in winter—you will likely run out of time long before you run out of things to do. West Yellowstone offers proximity, amenities and activities for every season. Follow the lead of the early explorers, and make it your base camp. Destination Yellowstone Guidebook 2013 | 11

BISON
GRIZZLY BEAR
Yellowstone’s largest mammal, the bison stands six feet tall, 12 feet in length and can weigh 2,000 lbs. While bison may look large and lethargic, this shaggy, bearded and horned animal can gallop 32 mph. Watch bison graze, cavort and take dust baths near the Firehole River, in Hayden and Lamar valleys, and near Mammoth Hot Springs.
Some 400 to 600 Ursus arctus horribilus live in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Grizzlies weigh up to 700 lbs. and vary from blond to cinnamon to brown. These omnivores eat both veggies and meat. Grizzlies frequent areas between Mammoth and Norris, the Fishing Bridge area, Mt. Washburn and Lamar Valley.
BIGHORN SHEEP
MULE DEER
Daredevils of the rocky cliffs, the Ovis canadenis leap ledge to ledge near the park’s northern entrance. They frequent rock slopes along the northern edge of Lamar Valley and Tower areas in Yellowstone and Hebgen & Quake lakes west of the park. The horns of older males may wrap in a full curl, while those of the female are smaller and more slender.
Plentiful and graceful, the large-eared Odocoileus hemionus roam in small herds throughout the park. Bucks drop antlers in winter and regrow them every spring.
BLACK BEAR
MOOSE
Ursus americanas reside in the meadows, mountains and treed areas throughout the region. Black or cinnamon colored, these bears search for food favorites like insects, rodents, berries and carrion.
The twig-eater Alces alces wallows among willows, its favorite food. This horse-size swamp lover resides near Lewis Lake, the Pelican Valley and along Highway 191 near West Yellowstone.
COYOTE
PRONGHORN ANTELOPE
Sometimes confused with their larger wolf relative, Canis latrans is about half the size of a wolf, has a bushier tail and pointy ears. Coyotes roam nearly the entire park.
North America’s fastest mammal, the Antilocapra americana sprints up to 70 mph through grasslands of Yellowstone and the West. Pronghorn in the Greater Yellowstone area undergo one of the longest migrations of any land animal in the world—from Grand Teton National Park south to wintering grounds in the Red Desert near Pinedale, Wyoming.
ELK
WOLF
Impressive racks are the hallmark of the region’s bull elk. The Cervus elaphus can run up to 35 mph and weighs up to 1,000 lbs. Some 20,000 elk roam through Yellowstone and neighboring wild areas. They graze year-round between West Yellowstone and Madison, within the Hayden and Lamar valleys and lounge at Mammoth Hot Springs.
Reintroduced into Yellowstone in 1995, over 400 Canis lupis live among more than three-dozen packs in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Wolves eat mainly elk taken through packs. Wolves are sighted in the Lamar and Hayden valleys almost daily and cruise wildlands near West Yellowstone along Highway 191.

Nearly 500 species inhabit the Greater Yellowstone region. Viewing wildlife can be the highlight of any vacation, but animals are wild and unpredictable. Stay at least 25 yards away from wildlife and 100 yards away from bears.

Evenings to Remember
Grizzly & Wol f Discovery Center 08/22/12
Evening entertainment is part of what makes West Yellowstone such a great destination. You’ll find more to do than you’ll have nights to do them. Live Theater: This summer, the longtime family favorite Playmill Theatre will be celebrating its 50th anniversary by presenting three of their most popular shows. On tap are “Beauty and the Beast,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.” Open May 24 through August 31. The theater is dark on Sundays. Rodeo: The Wild West Yellowstone rodeo brings bronc riding, team roping, barrel racing and bull riding to their arena, just eight miles west of West Yellowstone, Wednesday through Saturday evenings from June 19 through August 31. July adds Tuesday nights to the mix. Regionwide cowboys and cowgirls compete in a summerlong competition. The crowd favorite “calf scramble” has all of the little ones in the audience out for a live rodeo experience of their own. Museum: The Yellowstone Historic Center Museum is open daily May 18 through Labor Day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. From Labor Day to October 13, the hours will be reduced. The museum, housed in the historic Union Pacific Depot, helps children step back in time by the many stories it tells of how people have journeyed to and through the region since the founding of Yellowstone National Park in 1872. It’s a great add to a day in the park. The Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center: This AZAaccredited, not-for-profit wildlife park and educational facility offers different programs and activities for the whole family. Every visitor to Yellowstone can have a chance to uniquely experience the world of grizzly bears and gray wolves. All of the animals at the center are unable to survive in the wild and serve as ambassadors for their wild counterparts. Open 365 days a year, hours vary along with length of days. The hours from May 10 through September 1 are 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. destinationyellowstone.com
Yellowstone IMAX: Immerse yourself in the breathtaking scenery, majestic wildlife, and vivid color and sound of Yellowstone with the IMAX experience. Films such as “Yellowstone,” “Bears” and “Caves” are offered in one-hour increments in an impressive experience of sight and sound. Chuckwagon Dinners: The dinners are offered mid-June through Labor Day several days a week by the Parade Rest Guest Ranch just eight miles north of West Yellowstone. Visitors can enjoy a ride in a surrey or hay wagon, or join the wranglers on horseback to the aspen grove above Hebgen Lake where a dinner of steak, chicken or burgers awaits. The camaraderie of an outdoor meal, the tranquil setting and a little entertainment make for memorable moments in Yellowstone Country. Learn to Cast a Fly: Reserve Sunday evenings beginning at 7 p.m. from mid-June through Labor Day to join the guides of Bob Jacklin’s Fly Shop at the casting pond in the historic district. Even the youngest novice has the opportunity to cast a line and be hooked by a lifelong fascination with fly fishing. Shopping: Shops in West Yellowstone welcome visitors until 10 p.m. on most summer evenings. A variety of treasures, ice cream treats and fantastic people watching can be found as you explore. Historic Walking Tour: Spend a summer evening exploring local lore. A good place to start is the Yellowstone Historic Center Museum where you can pick up a brochure for the tour (also available at the Visitor Center or one of the many historic locations found along the tour). Finish at the landmark Eagle’s Store, slurping up a scrumptious chocolate malt or root beer float while soaking in the details of its old-fashioned soda fountain. Historic center museum
harriman state park of idaho
As the railroad marks West Yellowstone’s historic beginnings, it is fitting that the Union Pacific Depot building is home to the Yellowstone Historic Center Museum. More than 100 years ago on June 11, 1908, the first passenger train arrived here. To commemorate that momentous date for West Yellowstone, the museum offers free admission every June 11th. The museum includes interactive exhibits and artifacts that explore the complete history of the area—from the time the Plains Indians and bison roamed the land to the days the terrifying fires of 1988 swept through the landscape. Your family will enjoy hands-on exhibits in ancient art, archaeology, nature and history, as well as movie and theater presentations. Also, be sure to inquire about guided walking tours of the West Yellowstone historic district. The museum is open mid-May to midOctober. Call (406) 646-1100 or visit www.yellowstonehistoriccenter.org.
A 45-minute drive from West Yellowstone to Harriman State Park of Idaho is well worth it for the natureloving family. This 16,000-acre, stateowned parcel, located three miles south of Island Park, Idaho, is a wildlife refuge, historic site, recreational area and a working ranch combined. During the summer, Harriman State Park of Idaho is an outdoor classroom where staff teach bird identification, natural history and geology. The park offers endless recreational opportunities, including hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking and fishing. And if that’s not enough, try a history lesson. There are three restored ranch buildings in the park dating back to the turn of the century that are open to the public. Call (208) 558-7368 or visit http:// parksandrecreation.idaho.gov/parks/ harriman.aspx for more information.

Hebgen Lake is located just nine miles northwest of West Yellowstone. Bring your own water equipment, or there’s plenty of opportunity to rent boats and kayaks to enjoy a day on this beautiful lake. You can stay overnight at a lakeside cabin, motel or campground, or take a half-day, “out-of-car” experience with a guided tour by kayak. Both spin and fly fishing are great ways to spend the day, including the perfect spot for kids to cast right from the shore.

W est Y ellowstone Area T ours West Yellowstone is headquarters for terrific day trips. In addition to visiting Yellowstone’s Northern Loop, Southern Loop or Grand Loop (the two combined), there’s still plenty to explore outside of the park. For more detailed information and suggested itineraries, visit www.destinationyellowstone.com and click on “trip planning.” We’ve captured the highlights of just two of many other journeys to be tried. How much time you take delving into these byways is up to you, but a full day is recommended for each. Before you go, stop by the West Yellowstone Visitor Center located on the corner of Yellowstone and Canyon streets one block from the entrance to Yellowstone National Park. The friendly folks there can load you up with brochures and information to make the trip more enjoyable. And, as some attractions are seasonal, you’ll want to make sure you know who’s open and who’s not.
TOUR #1 – Madison River to Missouri Headwaters 1 MADISON RIVER CANYON EARTHQUAKE AREA The driving adventure begins as you pass through the Madison River Canyon, which, in 1959, was struck by one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded on the North American continent (7.5 on the Richter scale). The earthquake caused an enormous landslide and sent 80 million tons of rock tumbling into the canyon, obstructing the flow of the Madison River. The water soon backed up behind the fallen rocks and formed Earthquake Lake. Today, the Madison River Canyon Earthquake Area is of great scientific and general interest. As you drive along the banks of the water, the effect of the changing earth can be seen all around. Be sure to stop at the pullouts and scenic overlooks. Take a short walk and view some of the more dramatic areas. Stop in at the Earthquake Lake Visitor Center, located on Hwy 287, for complete information, including video presentations 20 | Destination Yellowstone Guidebook 2013
SAMPLE TOUR ROUTE Depart West Yellowstone on Hwy 191 heading north. After 8 miles turn west onto Hwy 287. 1 Drive along the shores of Hebgen Lake, Quake Lake and the Madison River to Ennis. 2 Continue west through Ennis to historic 3 Virginia City (12 miles) and one mile farther to Nevada City. Backtrack to Ennis, then head north on 287 to the 4 Lewis and Clark Caverns (40 miles). Continue on to the 5 Missouri Headwaters at Three Forks, Montana (20 miles). Travel south on route 205 through Logan, Manhattan, across I-90 and onto 191 south (21 miles). Follow 191 south along the Gallatin River all the way back to West Yellowstone (90 miles). You will pass Big Sky Resort and through the northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park.

and geologic displays (the center is open seasonally). Throughout the drive, watch for moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goats and maybe even bears.
2 ENNIS Follow the winding Madison River through the magnificent Madison Valley north to the fishing mecca of Ennis, Montana. You will be greeted at the entrance to Ennis with a sign that reads: “Welcome to Ennis. Population: 660 People, 11,000,000 Trout.” William Ennis homesteaded this area in 1863 during the Gold Rush days. Today, the region is cattle country, and the spirit of the Old West lives on in its quaint western motif.
3 VIRGINIA CITY / NEVADA CITY Next stop Virginia City, just 12 miles west of Ennis, and Nevada City, just one mile farther. Photo buffs will want to stop at the pullout as you leave Ennis heading up the hill to Virginia City—the view of the wide valley and mountain range is Montana at its best. Both towns are Montana treasures and the sites of Gold Rush fever in the 1860s. Today, a drive through either picturesque town feels like a drive through a time portal, with clapboard sidewalks and downtown western facades lining your way. Virginia City was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Virginia City once included more than a thousand buildings. The area holds claim to the largest collection of Gold Rush-era buildings in the West. Fifty currently standing structures date back to the height of the Gold Rush when nearly 20,000 hardy souls called it home. A walking tour of the area is available from the West Yellowstone Visitor Center as well as in Virginia City (if it’s off-season, be sure to get the brochure in West Yellowstone). At its peak, Nevada City boasted dozens of stores and cabins. In 1872, the town had a miner’s store, a brewery, a butcher, a blacksmith, a livery stable and destinationyellowstone.com
a masonic hall. But by 1876, boom turned to bust and Nevada City became a ghost town. Make sure you bring lots of quarters to visit the Music Hall, which features old-time pipe organs, movie machines and great novelty inventions. If it’s peak season, take the train ride on one of two restored locomotives between Virginia City and Nevada City. Make sure you know what time the last train runs so you’re not stranded.
4 LEWIS AND CLARK CAVERNS After you backtrack through Ennis and head up 287, check out the historic pullout that overlooks Ennis Lake and a different view of the valley. At the top of the hill, see if you can spot the wagon train trails. Contrary to the name, the caverns were discovered by ranchers, not Lewis and Clark. President Roosevelt named the caves in honor of the great explorers who passed (unknowingly) in the valley beneath the caverns in 1805 and 1806. Lewis and Clark Caverns became Montana’s first state park in 1937. The magnificent limestone caves are hidden in the white limestone cliffs above the Jefferson River and are gateways to an underground world of multitiered columns, frozen waterfalls and rock icicles. Today, the caverns are electrically lighted, and guided tours are conducted daily from May 1 to September 30. Our tip: Walk along the hill to the cave entrance at the top. There are lots of places to stop, rest along the path and look for fossils in the rocks. If it’s the warm season, think about an early morning tour to avoid the heat, as there is little shade until you reach the caves. The caves themselves have a perpetually cool and damp climate, so make sure you have a jacket or sweatshirt.
5 MISSOURI HEADWATERS (THREE FORKS) Lewis and Clark followed the Missouri River hoping to find a route to the Pacific Ocean. Obviously, they discovered this wasn’t the case but still felt this site was
an “essential point in the geography of North America.” Today, you can walk in their footsteps and see the convergence of the Jefferson, Gallatin and Madison rivers. The area abounds with interpretive displays highlighting the Native American tribes that roamed the area. Visit the Headwaters Heritage Museum, including a visit to the Madison Buffalo Jump. For some off-the-main-road driving, take route 205 to Belgrade and 191 back to West Yellowstone. If you have time, take 205 all the way into Bozeman and visit the Museum of the Rockies.
TOUR #2 – Earthquake Lake to Mesa Falls 1 EARTHQUAKE LAKE See description under previous tour and then continue on to Big Springs and Mesa Falls.
BIG SPRINGS & MESA FALLS SCENIC BYWAY Stop at the Visitor Center for an Idaho map for this quieter, out-of-the-way sort of day. Significant in the early settling of the area, both Big Springs and Mesa Falls have millions of years of geological history as well. Travel south on U.S. Hwy 20 to the Island Park, Idaho, area. Take the Big Springs loop road, and although most evidence of the railroad is long gone, the natural springs that maintain hundreds of trout provide a pleasant retreat-like atmosphere. Rent a raft or canoe, or bring your own and relax while floating down the Big Springs National Water Trail. Afterwards, continue south on U.S. 20 to the Mesa Falls Recreation Area. Here, vast changes began 2 million years ago. The area is under the control of the U.S. Forest Service, and a federal fee of $5.00 covers all of the passengers in a vehicle. A museum, interpretive signage, picnic tables and trails are all to be enjoyed. Continue on the Mesa Falls Road, stopping at the Lower Falls and feeling the peace of Bear Canyon before coming out at Ashton, Idaho. On the return trip to West Yellowstone, stop and explore Harriman State Park of Idaho. Destination Yellowstone Guidebook 2013 | 21

The Henry’s Fork, the Madison, the rivers and creeks of Yellowstone— welcome to fly fishing heaven! Whether you are a seasoned veteran or just getting started, the waters and the plentiful fish of the Yellowstone region await. For more information about fly fishing in West Yellowstone, see page 26.
Bears, bison and wolves may be the first animals that come to mind when you think Yellowstone, but how about peregrine falcons, trumpeter swans and bald eagles? West Yellowstone’s diverse habitat makes it home to a wide range of winged friends. Take the Swainson’s hawk, which spends its summers in West Yellowstone and winters in Argentina. Or the rough-legged hawk, which leaves the Arctic to spend its winters in “balmy” West Yellowstone. All are accessible to visitors via the Forest Service roads and wilderness areas in the region including the Red Rocks National Wildlife Refuge. The Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center (800) 257-2570 offers birding tours in the spring and fall, as well as regular live bird of prey presentations. Pick up a copy of the West Yellowstone Birding Trail Brochure at the Visitor Center.

The 3-mile trek to the top of Purple Mountain takes you to 8,433 feet and offers spectacular views of Yellowstone’s geyser basins and the Teton Mountain Range to the south. The trail is easy to moderate in exertion. For a more relaxed walk, follow the boardwalk along the edge of the Madison River, a mile inside the park entrance. West Yellowstone is horse country, and local outfitters and operators can take you on an exceptional trail ride. We recommend Whit’s Road Trailhead, north of West Yellowstone on Hwy 287, or the Red Canyon Road two miles farther on. Red Canyon opens up into miles of trails including access to the Lee Metcalf Wilderness Area where wildflowers, rugged canyons and wonderful views abound. Be sure to pack a bottle of powerful bug repellent for your trip, and enjoy getting out into the thick of things. There’s nothing quite like being on horseback to make you feel superior, and there’s nothing quite like the backcountry (or a stubborn horse) to humble you. quake lake The Madison River Canyon Earthquake Area encompasses 38,000 acres and lies 25 miles from West Yellowstone. The “Quake Lake” reserve is testimony to one of the most violent earthquakes to hit the West. On August 17, 1959, a magnitude-7.5 quake forced a massive landslide to create this 190-footdeep, 6-mile-long lake. A Visitor Center overlooks the slide area and lake. Educational exhibits with information about wildlife, earthquakes and other geographic phenomena line the walls. Highlights include a working seismograph, photographs of damage taken in the days shortly following the quake and recollections from survivors. The Visitor Center is open 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
river rafting When the heat index peaks and the summer sun is too strong to stand, there’s nothing like a ride down the river to keep you cool. Try a full-day or half-day rafting adventure on the Gallatin River. Thrill-seekers will enjoy the lower section of the river, where Class III and IV rapids with names like Screaming Left, Thumper and The Mad Mile will give you an adrenaline rush. For those with a more relaxed trip in mind, the upper Gallatin is the way to go. A journey through the upper Gallatin Canyon includes fewer rapids, giving rafters a chance to enjoy the scenery and possibly a sighting of deer, bighorn sheep, moose, bear or river otters. biking Photos on these pages by latham jenkins/circumerrostock.com.
If biking is your sport, you won’t be disappointed in West Yellowstone. A large variety of terrain—from old logging roads to hairraising, technical single track—is found within 15 minutes of town. Rental bikes are available, and you can hit a trail from the edge of town or drive to any number of nearby trailheads. One popular mountain bike ride begins at the junction of Yellowstone Avenue and Iris, and heads southwest of town. The ride offers a scenic double-track trail paralleling the South Fork of the Madison River, with views of nearby peaks and a chance to catch a glimpse of moose, geese, blue herons and other wildlife. For a comfortable road ride, try an evening tour along the Madison River. Leaving West Yellowstone, the ride rises gradually as you travel east. Pedal all the way to Madison Junction (14 miles), or turn around anywhere along the way. Then, it’s a gradual downhill back into West Yellowstone in time for dinner.

island park , idah o
In many respects, Island Park is truly an island. Whether you enter Island Park south of West Yellowstone, or by ascending the sloping sides of the ancient caldera outside Ashton, Idaho, you’ll immediately find yourself in a unique setting of lakes, woods, rivers, meadows and mountains lightly sprinkled with ranches, summer homes and fishing lodges. The fishing in Island Park is legendary, and the Henry’s Fork of the Snake is the crown jewel. Other bodies of water include Henry’s Lake and the Island Park Reservoir. In the winter, locals and the increasing number of visitors trade their fishing tackle for snowmobiles to explore the hundreds of miles of forest and trails. Bird watching, hiking, horseback riding, rodeo, cross-country skiing, hunting and touring Island Park’s scenic and historical sites are some of the other popular activities. Perhaps not surprisingly, the proximity of Yellowstone National Park has been an important element in the development of Island Park. From the earliest days, travelers passed through by stagecoach on the multiple-day trip to the west gate of the nation’s first national park. Later, around 1909, the railway to the west gate of Yellowstone and the new town of West Yellowstone, Montana, brought more visitors and the advent of Island Park’s first logging and tourist booms. In the post World War II years, Island Park earned renown for having the longest Main Street in America, a 33-mile narrow, incorporated strip on either side of the “Old” Hwy 20. This anomaly was created by local businessmen to circumvent a “no-gambling-outside-incorporated-cities-and-towns” law that threatened their lively slot machine business and ability to serve alcoholic beverages. The advent of the railroads also led to the creation of one of Island Park’s greatest lasting legacies, Harriman State Park of Idaho, a.k.a. the Railroad Ranch. Owned by such East Coast notables as the Harriman and Guggenheim families, operating practices at the Railroad Ranch balanced conservation, ranching 24 | Destination Yellowstone Guidebook 2013
and the needs of the small number of summer guests. Their concern for preservation of the prime wildlife habitat was a major reason for the Harrimans’ decision to donate the 15,000-acre ranch to the State of Idaho. The Henry’s Fork is a fly fishing-only area within the park. In a rush to the more famous west gate, many people forget that Island Park is extremely convenient to the forgotten southwest Bechler entrance to Yellowstone. The Bechler is home to the park’s greatest number of waterfalls and some of its best hiking. Cave Falls is a popular destination for families, offering the perfect opportunity to experience firsthand the roar and spray of a waterfall and an escape from the heat on a hot summer’s day. Nearby Upper and Lower Mesa Falls Scenic Byway on Idaho 47 offers dramatic glimpses of the Island Park caldera’s edge, dropping 114 feet and 65 feet, respectively. This dramatic drop was created between 600,000 and 2 million years ago when an immense shield volcano exploded repeatedly, finally collapsing and leaving behind the world’s largest caldera. Accessed by turning off of Hwy 20 onto Idaho 47 and then following the signs, the setting of the falls is a perfect location for a picnic or short hike. Big Springs, the source of the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River, is also well worth a visit. Although the Big Springs area is protected from fishing, the constant 52-degree temperature and even crystal-clear flow makes the Henry’s Fork a favorite early in the fishing season when other nearby rivers are cold and muddy from the sediment picked up by the melting snow. Big Springs is also near the beginning of a beautiful five-mile canoe or boat trip along a stretch of a National Scenic Water Trail. Other activities in Island Park include a bicycle ride or hike on the Old Union Pacific railroad bed, a game of golf at the Island Park Resort, a horseback trail ride or a visit to Johnny Sack’s cabin. The longer you stop and linger in Island Park, the more difficult you may find it to leave and the more you’ll want to come back. destinationyellowstone.com

Fly Fishing on the henry’s fork and madison rivers
The Henry’s Fork of the Snake River has been called the finest dry fly stream in the country. It is best known for its smooth currents, prolific insect hatches and large—though selective— trout. It is more than 60 miles long, and there’s a stretch for both beginners and experts alike. The Henry’s Fork gets going in early June, while other area rivers are still clouded with snowpack runoff. The Railroad Ranch and Box Canyon are the quintessence of Henry’s Fork fishing. The Ranch is flatwater fishing, casting to large trout feeding on insect hatches. Green and brown drake hatches in late July are not to be missed. “The Box” is home to some of the largest trout in the Yellowstone area. Rainbows have been caught weighing over 5 pounds. It is an early season delight, with hatches of giant salmon flies, caddis, stoneflies and mayflies. As with many area rivers, the Henry’s Fork fishes best in the early morning, trailing off a bit during the
afternoon hours, and goes out with a bang in the late afternoon and early evening. Presentation is often crucial, so make that first cast count.
the madison river Just over the Continental Divide lies the world-renowned Madison River. Fast pocket waters find rainbows and browns lurking behind every rock, tree and bend. The Madison offers the best fishing both early and late season. July has been noted as “the month of the Madison,” which is to say get on the river, and you can’t miss. The river in Yellowstone National Park fishes especially well in the fall during the run of the browns, when large brown trout come into the river from Hebgen Lake in preparation for spawning. In the park, a road runs along the river, making it easy to access. From any access point, hike up- or downstream for long stretches of water and relative solitude.

In August, the waters of the Madison warm a bit, causing fish to stick to deep holes and pockets. It’s best to use nymphs to hook into the lunkers at the bottom. Try using a big dry fly as a strike indicator, with a nymph tied on as a dropper. Ten or so miles below Quake Lake at the Reynolds Pass Bridge, the quality waters of the Madison begin. Huge boulders in this area form deep pockets full of wild rainbows and browns. The water is swift, and presentation is less critical, making it an ideal area for both novice and experienced fishers. In August and September, terrestrial patterns are on: ants, beetles, grasshoppers and others. In the evenings, you’ll find great action on caddis and mayflies. In parts, the Madison has sustained some damage from the impact of whirling disease. The rainbow populations have dropped considerably, causing— fortunately, in some respects—the disappearance of fly fishermen. However, despite the decline in rainbows, excellent fishing remains prominent on the Madison River. The best way to fish both the Henry’s Fork and the Madison is by boat. Local guides are both highly skilled and abundant. Roadside sportsmen access areas are also terrific. There are enough trout in the waters of the Henry’s Fork, Madison and West Yellowstone-area rivers to allow everyone to spread out and enjoy the fishing without crowding fellow anglers. The rule of thumb for courtesy is to provide the person up- or downstream at least 50 yards on the left and right side. If you cannot find a space, keep looking—one is bound to turn up. You have chosen wisely in your location. Enjoy the beauty of the area, its scenery, its rivers and its fish. Tight lines!

Rendezvous Ski Trails
Although the heart of skiing in West Yellowstone is the Rendezvous Trail System, easily accessible backcountry and recreational touring opportunities are virtually unlimited, bound only by your imagination and initiative.
West Yellowstone, Montana, is rapidly becoming a favored destination for both recreational and competitive cross-country skiers. Known as the site of the Rendezvous Ski Race, West Yellowstone attracts skiers of all abilities, interests and nationalities. The West Yellowstone area has something to offer every cross-country skier, from perfectly groomed trails to deep backcountry powder. Easily accessible snow is virtually guaranteed from mid-November through mid-April.
The Rendezvous Trail System is the heart of skiing in West Yellowstone. Boasting a convenient network of trails for skiers of all abilities with some of the best groomed conditions, the trail system is arguably the best in the nation. Within walking distance of any location in West Yellowstone, the 30 kilometers of trails start on the south side of town beneath a dramatic log arch. The trails are ideal for beginners and experienced skiers alike, consisting of gently rolling terrain as well as technically demanding hills and turns. A modest $8.00 fee is charged for use of the trails December through March. During the month of November, fees are higher to provide extra grooming during the Ski Festival.
Riverside Ski Trails
Cross-Country Ski Events
Located on the east side of town, this 10k trail takes skiers to the Madison River inside of Yellowstone. The trail breaks into an up- or downriver trail and is groomed approximately once a week. There is no fee for this trail.
Beginning with the Yellowstone Ski Festival in late November, at least one event takes place each month in West Yellowstone throughout the ski season. The Ski Festival—a Thanksgiving feast of clinics and the premier fall international event—offers “try & buy” demos, product exposition, races and skier camaraderie. Local races, dubbed “Spam Cup,” occur December through March and are informal events popular with enthusiasts from the region. West Yellowstone also hosts the Yellowstone Rendezvous every year. This event, part of the American Marathon Series, attracts more than 600 participants. It offers distances from 5 to 50 kilometers in both classic and freestyle, and welcomes all age levels. For more information on skiing activities, race schedules, and snow and grooming conditions, visit www. rendezvousskitrails.com or call the West Yellowstone Chamber of Commerce at (406) 646-7701.

West Yellowstone is known for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing, but there’s a multitude of other activities to choose from!
Dog sledding
snowshoeing
Your tail-wagging team of dogs was born to run, and they can’t wait to begin. Choose a half-day trip or a full-day journey, complete with snacks, hot drinks and lunch. If you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of a moose, bison or bald eagle en route. Adventurers of all ages can enjoy dog sledding. Whether your idea of heaven is sitting back, enjoying the views and letting the dogs joyfully do all the work, or learning to drive your own sled, the ideal trip awaits you.
Snowshoeing is the only way to travel when you want to make tracks through deep snow. Luckily, snowshoe design has come a long way in the past few years. The heavy, ungainly snowshoe made of wood and sinew has given way to streamlined gear made of spaceage materials. Snowshoes can make it easy to get to places that are too difficult to reach in the warmer months. Snags of logs and bramble are smoothed over by 5 feet of snow, allowing easy passage. A nature hike led by someone who can tell you what all those tracks mean can be a highlight of your winter wandering. Both Yellowstone park, Gallatin National Forest and Harriman State Park of Idaho offer weekly ranger-led tours.
downhill skiing A short drive north of West Yellowstone, discover Big Sky, Montana, home of the nation’s biggest vertical rise of 4,180 feet. Abundant snowfall, diverse terrain, a natural setting and 3,500 skiable acres characterize this resort. From the top of Big Sky’s Lone Peak, enjoy views of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. Call (800) 548-4486 for more information.

Snowmobiling west yellowstone
Do you dream of powder-stashed bowls or stomach-churning hillclimbs? Maybe driving your sled leisurely to explore numerous shops and restaurants? Or perhaps gliding along silky trails with magnificent views is more your style. If your idea of the perfect winter vacation includes any of these, then West Yellowstone is the place for you. This snowmobile-friendly town accesses the nation’s most extensive trail network, including more than 400 miles of groomed delights in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho, and off-trail exploration on countless acres of national forest. An average annual snowfall of 150 to 175 inches in West Yellowstone creates a blanket over which you can travel long distances and view spectacular wildlife and natural wonders up-close.
Big Sky Just north of town, Big Sky Trail stretches 120 miles toward Bozeman with various access points providing shorter alternatives. The trail is groomed for about 12 miles, but beyond this point is recommended only for proficient and wellconditioned riders due to deep, ungroomed snow and incredible hillclimbing options.
Two Top Two Top National Recreation Trail begins conveniently west of town. Gently ascending more than 2,000 feet, you find yourself astounded by “ghost trees” and magnificent views. This 34-mile loop connects with a system of groomed trails in the adjacent Targhee National Forest.
scenery transformed by rugged winter conditions. Best available technology (BAT) snowmobiles, accompanied by guides in groups of 10, are welcome. Another great way to visit Yellowstone is via snowcoach. The park is open daily from mid-December to mid-March and offers fuel, food, restrooms and lodging.
Lionhead
Other Options
Easily accessible from Two Top Loop, this 10-mile trail ends amid dazzling vistas. Offering some of the trickiest terrain in the area, it’s an adrenaline junkie’s dream come true.
Numerous other marked and groomed trails in the national forests offer relaxed and scenic rides. Cougar Creek meanders through the woods and past open spaces. Horse Butte Loop navigates thick pine forests and open meadows, with a fantastic view from the butte’s lookout tower. Madison Arm Loop includes matchless visions of Hebgen Lake. South Plateau follows creeks and rivers as it parallels the park boundary to connect with a groomed network in Idaho.
Yellowstone National Park A winter visit to West Yellowstone isn’t complete without an excursion through the nation’s first national park. Nearly 200 awe-inspiring miles of groomed trails access
DETAILS Before you begin exploring on your sled, make sure to review the local rules and regulations. With access around almost every corner, one must pay attention to different rules and regulations for the Town of West Yellowstone, Gallatin National Forest, Targhee National Forest in Idaho, Yellowstone National Park and beyond. Permits, rules, age regulations and user fees vary for each location. Find more details on the West Yellowstone Chamber site at www.destinationyellowstone.com.

SNOWMOBILE EVENTS West Yellowstone is home to March’s annual World Snowmobile EXPO with SnoCross racing thrills, snow dragsters challenging one another for bragging rights, vintage snowmobile displays, after-market parts exposition hall and displays of next year’s snowmobiles. Nighttime activities include a “FunnyMoney” Casino night, live entertainment and plenty of time to gather with friends and family. Other seasonal snowmobile events could include additional SnoCross races and freestyle open competitions.
SNOWCOACH While snowmobiles may be the most popular means of seeing the country, a ride in a snowcoach is equally scenic—and a whole lot warmer! Using modern, converted vans on snow tracks or the original Bombardier, snowcoaches are a popular method to view Yellowstone in the winter. They offer an enclosed and heated option, and include a naturalist guide as chauffeur. In the quiet of a snowcoach, your guide will have an opportunity to entertain you with stories that bring the history of Yellowstone alive. Some companies offer opportunities for you to be “dropped” from the snowcoach to trek out on your skis or snowshoes and reconnect with your tour later on. Full-day tours to Old Faithful and Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone areas are both available, as are private charters. Call Snowcoach Yellowstone (800) 426-7669, Yellowstone Alpen Guides (800) 858-3502, Yellowstone Tour and Travel (800) 221-1151,or Buffalo Bus Company (800) 426-7669 for more information.
