WELCOME TO OUR 40TH ANNUAL MARKET This anniversary of our beginnings four decades ago at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre presents an opportunity to reflect upon our mission as a cooperative “To promote and sell members’ quality crafts”. We have always envisioned ourselves as assisting artists and craftspeople to make a living from the talents that they have worked so hard to develop. Craft has always involved the inter-generational transmission of knowledge and long-term apprenticeship. This year we were concerned and saddened to see the “suspension” of the Textile Arts Program at Capilano University due to a government funding shortfall. We decided that the faculty of the Textile Arts program might use this opportunity to speak to its importance, its long term relationship with Circle Craft and the importance of quality education to bringing the highest caliber work to the public. -Paul Yard
FUTURE ARTISTS LOSE OUT ON EDUCATION OPPORTUNITY Here at the Textile Arts Department of Capilano University we are honoured and privileged to congratulate Circle Craft on the 40th anniversary of being a unique co-op that has supported crafts artist, providing the Vancouver, B.C., and international community with the best of the handmade that B.C. has to offer. We know we have been an integral part of that journey – we are also turning 40 this year. Paul Yard once referred to us as the “Farm Team”, a wonderful compliment that connotes cultivation – harvest – resource. The Textile Arts Department began in 1973 as the two year ‘Clay and Textiles’ program; some readers will remember the ‘Craft Instructors Training Program’ that ran for several years; in the very early 90s, we became the (always evolving) two year Textiles Diploma Program (which has developed four formal degree completion agreements), and the Advanced Textiles Certificate. We faculty always see alumni at the Circle Craft Christmas Market, and know that alumni have often served on the Circle Craft Board. Last May it was announced that our program was slated to be cut. We at the department were both honoured and humbled by the profound and moving wave of support that we received from the crafts, arts and general community in response to these proposed cuts. It seems that somehow the presence of this program has provided cultural nourishment to a very big and increasingly connected community over these four decades, in our broad educational mandate of professional artistic practices. It seems, and we believe, that it is impossible that this resource, this Textile Arts Department, will simply disappear. And so this year, rather than enjoy our display and demonstration booth at Circle Craft in this special birthday year, we faculty must devote ourselves to imagining and creating a future on the edge of a very unclear horizon. We do so with gratitude to our entire community, with the hopes that the future –whatever form it takes - will bring us an expanded community, and with special thanks to Circle Craft, which has provided our biggest and most generous scholarship to graduating students - a launching pad and an affirmation for each alumna that has received it. ABOUT US Circle Craft is a unique BC Artist Co-operative dedicated to providing opportunities for craftspeople to connect with the community. Formed in 1972, Circle Craft has grown to become a major force in the marketing and promotion of quality craft, utilizing a ‘direct from the artist’ approach. STUDENT ART EXHIBIT The Student Art Exhibit features student work from seven lower mainland secondary schools. The objective of this exhibit is to promote and encourage student participation in a broad spectrum of visual arts.
