EDITOR FOREWORDS

Don't you hate it when the days start getting shorter and the darker nights come around earlier?

Summer has been and gone, it seemed to pass in the blink of an eye. Now autumn is upon us and it won’t be long before winter is on the way.

you start out in. Explain the sacrifices you will have to make as a couple if you are to continue and pursue a career in executive protection.

I am again asking myself why didn’t I go on that family holiday to enjoy some of the summer sun?? I guess the same reason I haven’t managed every other year; I am a self confessed workaholic!

I preach to those around me to “take some family time” and to “enjoy your time off,” Whilst my partner shouts at me “you’re going away again???”

To progress and have a successful career in the Security Industry you will need to develop and become more knowledgeable in all areas of the industry. You should always maintain a thirst and hunger to learn more and what better way of doing that than reading the latest, and future, editions of the Circuit Magazine? As I mentioned, the days are getting shorter, so why not pour yourself a hot cup of coffee, or, glass of whisky, if you’re off duty; get comfortable in your favourite chair and jump into the latest issue? This issue is packed with lots of informative and interesting stories and sure to be something for everyone.

I guess this is where a lot of us who are successful and working at the higher levels within the industry can find themselves. The role becomes all consuming and our life will be lived around the lives of the people that we protect.

This is something those who are striving to get to the top need to beware of. There are sacrifices which need to be made to reach the higher levels. Not everyone is ready for it and each situation is different. Things to consider: Do you have children or a partner? If so, life can easily pass you by so an extremely understanding partner is what is required. If you don't have a partner then be honest and upfront in any new relationship

Welcome to the latest edition of The Circuit Magazine, the #1 magazine for the Executive Protection Professional.

Sometimes I feel like we don’t get enough credit for that tagline, it’s not just hype, check the marketplace, it’s a fact.

With that said, I can also confidently say, that the editorial staff here isn’t doing it for credit, (I can also tell you we aren’t getting rich from this either), instead, the biggest driving force behind the production of the magazine, month after month is a genuine love for the craft.

Speaking for myself and my copublishers, this industry has been good to us, and as such, we have found a means to give back to the community in such a way that it will inform, educate and perhaps, inspire, others.

Here’s an example, one of the biggest selling points of The Circuit is the fact that it is a periodical for Close Protection professionals, written by Close Protection professionals, that means the box is checked in terms of authenticity.

However, while the average Protector might have a vast skillset, journalism might not generally be on the list. Because of that, many who might have something very compelling to contribute shy away from pitching a story because they

feel they do not have the writing chops. A gentleman I know named Michael Brown fit that example to a “T.” For a few years now I’ve been encouraging him to write about topics he feels passionate about.

I often mention to him to just get the words on paper, and let me worry about the spelling and the sentence structure. In reality, those are the easy part, it’s the ideas, honesty, and mastery of the subject matter that you are speaking on that makes a great article.

Well, I’m happy to report that this month Mr. Brown surprised us with a last minute submission that met the criteria mentioned above. After reading it, it’s my hope that this is the first of many articles from him. I also hope that his words will switch on a light bulb to others, be it taking something positive away from the points he was making, or even motivating them to write something longer than a Tweet or a Facebook post and submit it themselves.

If that sounds like you, feel free to drop me a line, I mean, that’s what The Circuit was designed for.

Michael Jackson's former bodyguard and close confidante Javon Beard has been jailed for up to 18 years September 2019 Beard is behind bars in a Nevada prison after being convicted for armed robbery. A criminal complaint dated August 19 charges 30-year-old bodyguard, Joel Morris, with harassment, assault and theft. In video of the incident (which can be seen here), Ryan appears before the crowd and soon stops speaking. She pauses as a man comes up to the podium (Morris) and then moves to the camera.

Would-be Fans Viciously Attack Bodyguard of Rapper, Future.

It is unclear what caused the confrontation, but the rapper later said he had refused to pose for a photo with the tourists, because he was too tired after a flight, and they had reacted angrily.

The bodyguard allegedly fought the group off at first, before being knocked out cold, as shown in the footage.

Responding to the incident, Future wrote on Instagram: ‘What they did to security I didn’t see period, I’m not a witness to anything.

I know Spoon. Hes one of the good ones. Yes he did get into physical altercation with a group of approx 10, and actually rendered 2 unconscious and as he tried to leave the scene (appearing disoriented and obvious signs from physical altercation judging by missing a shoe, torn hoodie sleeve and the hoodie partially on his head) yes he was hit from a bystander. Those who are seasoned vets in this industry know at any time someone can punch your ticket REGARDLESS of how "Joe cool" "high speed" operator one thinks they are, it can happen. I for one (knowing Spoon) pray for his speedy recovery and am glad it wasnt worse than what it could have been.

I wont try and quarterback the situation as I was not there. We all have read alleged information of multiple attackers and don’t know how many attackers there were, when the initial confrontation occurred. How quickly it may have escalated from words to physical altercation or what previous plans may have been made which didn’t survive first contact.

There are tons of things we normally do in advance to try and mitigate risk, and under the wrong set of circumstances can make everything run a foul. Also, just because you try to walk away doesn’t always mean that option will be granted by the attackers whether you are a one-man team or a multiple man team.

Hopefully Future takes this as a lesson going forward to up his team by 1 at least ESPECIALLY when travelling international. It was said Future walked away because he didnt want to be example like "another ASAP Rocky" and what's going on with him in Switz.

Everyone can always sharpshoot the situation the day after and having never been in any situation like that.

It's not unusual for practitioners of our craft to find themselves operating as a "solo specialists" alongside their respective clients. The question is, are these days slowly coming to an end? If they are, how will we be able to convey this to our clients?

The truth is, are any of us really "solo" practitioner's anymore? Your answer to that question might be an affirmative yes because you are the primary specialist providing protection to your client daily. You intimately know the client. You know all their preferences, habits, and traits and what they like to eat. You are acquainted with the family and have established a rapport with the children. These are all things which a primary specialist should know, but does it stop there? I say YES! In my opinion, the definition of a solo practitioner is; He/she is typically awake hours before the client.

They have eaten, exercised, and dressed, and they have

a rough understanding of the client itinerary for the day. They have checked and accounted for all their, equipment and they are mentally prepared for the day and ready for the first timing. Congratulations, you're a solo practitioner.

If providing security with understaffed coverage or no immediate backup to cover when the need arises, are we ultimately doing a disservice? Are we giving our clients the best chance of surviving a critical incident? Obviously, If the client won't sanction additional assets, then that's their decision.

However, as professionals, we must always strive to provide the best cover possible and identify shortcomings. Failure to do this is our failure. So, let's use our experience, knowledge, and resolute courage to help improve the everchanging landscape of personal protection.

For the fourth article in the series we’re going to be looking more forwards at some emerging threats out there.

They are only of limited relevance today, but as the technologies involved become more widespread and implemented into every facet of life they will only become more prevalent. While it sounds like the stuff of science fiction, these threats exist now and are not going to go away.

For simplicity, we’ll say that a ‘smart’ device is anything which connects to the internet (or a network) and is not intended to be a computer interface. Intended is the key word there, as many of these devices are insecure for the simple reason that they are a computer. The problem

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 48 is that it is now cheaper and easier to put a general purpose computer into a device and run some software to, for example, turn lights on and off than it is to design a singlepurpose lightbulb which also connects to a network.

The side effect of this is that the smart lightbulb connected to the network is also a computer, and it’s one that the owner has very limited control over. Every ‘smart’ system connected to a network increases the potential attack surface, and potential vulnerabilities.

A lot of the time this is overlooked with the argument that, for example, a lightbulb simply isn’t a huge security threat – even if compromised the worst someone might manage would be to turn the lights on and off.

Unfortunately things are never that simple.

Without even looking at risks linked to specific devices (we’ll get to those shortly) many smart devices rely on connecting to a wireless network, and will happily connect to a spoofed network while revealing the password to all and sundry. We saw in the last article how a MitM

INTRODUCTION TO CYBERSECURITY attack can be used to this end, and a smart device is no less vulnerable than any other.

But we covered MitM last time, and there are much more interesting and dangerous issues with many of these ‘smart’ devices. We’ll look only at those which could arguably be called home devices – semiautonomous vehicles, drones, and similar could easily fill a series on their own. For brevity, we’ll look at three basic threats which come up with ‘smart’ devices – their use for reconnaissance, the potential for mischief, and the potential for

physical threats to security. I separate mischief and physical threats only because the people likely to exploit these are two separate groups, pranks and mischief are much more likely for opportunistic attackers with no real targeted motivation, while the dangers of physical damage are much more likely to be a sophisticated, targeted attack of types we are not really seeing on a large scale as yet.

I occasionally do presentations on the dangers of ‘smart’ devices, or the Internet of Things (IoT), and usually start

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 48 with a list of the absurd devices that can now be connected to a network.

It’s a good place to begin, so lets imagine a home equipped with all of the latest devices, from intelligent electronic locking systems with video doorbells through to the ‘smart’ egg rack in the fridge. No, the egg rack example is not a joke, though I will admit I’ve yet to work out a potential threat from someone managing to compromise one.

Our imaginary smart home will be equipped with the following: • Doorbell with the ability to start a video call to the owner’s mobile when pressed • External CCTV (basic commercial system, wireless cameras with an online portal to be viewed remotely) • Electronic door lock, able to be unlocked remotely by mobile • Smart lighting everywhere, remotely controlled and scheduled • Automatic pet feeder/ treat dispenser with video camera and screen (to check on and talk to the pet when not home, and dispense

treats on command) • Aquarium with mobilecontrolled pump and thermostat • Video-enabled toothbrush, for more effective brushing (this really does exist) • Smart kitchen appliances, including a fridge, kettle, toaster, oven, microwave, dish washer, tumble drier, and washing machine I’ve left out quite a few potential devices since they’ll either be of limited use to an attacker, other than the MitM potential mentioned earlier, or duplicate some of the above.

So first of all lets start with everything with a video camera. Whether through an MitM attack, or direct exploitation, most cameras which have not been set up professionally are highly insecure (and a number of those set up by professionals who have not been trained in how to configure IP cameras, since the default settings leave a lot to be desired).

Those which are built into smart devices, such as the toothbrush and pet feeder, potentially even more so.

The good news is that

the toothbrush relies on Bluetooth rather than wireless networking, so an attacker looking to make use of the spy camera in your bathroom would have to be within range, or have a booster within range.

That means they’re limited to being within a few tens of metres, or having a small battery powered device within that range.

Of course, our hypothetical attacker would also need to find a suitable exploit to hijack the toothbrush’s camera, but given that manufacturers of these devices are not known for their diligence in designing secure systems, and I have yet to hear of

someone connecting their toothbrush to the internet to patch it, someone with the appropriate motivation is likely more than capable of doing so.

The pet feeder, while at least in a less sensitive area, is more of an issue.

Since it is designed to connect to a wireless network and allow the owner to both see and communicate through it (of course, having a microphone as well so that the pet in question can speak back) using their mobile phone while away from home, the only thing that prevents an attacker from doing so is

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 48 the authentication. Some devices or services are so poorly designed as to allow access without any authentication, or use a universal default username and password to grant access to the vendor’s backdoors in the system (which are at least used to update the software).

The CCTV cameras, while also having many of the same issues, highlight another problem with these smart devices.

The search engine Shodan (https://shodan. io) allows users to find open devices connected to the internet by type (including automatic number plate recognition systems, wind turbines, and CCTV monitoring nuclear power stations), and where weak devices are used provides a very convenient list for those looking to cause damage. Denial of service attacks in recent years have moved away from making use of individual’s computers, and some of the largest attacks have been enabled by running a botnet consisting of poorly secured CCTV cameras, usually without any monitoring by the owner. This has led to

some of the largest attacks ever seen, and they continue to escalate.

The video doorbell, of course, causes the same sorts of issues as any other cameraenabled system, but has a whole new set of risks associated when it is connected to a smart locking system. Not only are these systems easy to hijack physically (earlier this year I gave a presentation on how to ‘pick’ electronic locks based on RFID cards), when they are connected to a cloud service which allows unlocking through a mobile phone (and sometimes through Bluetooth) the problems become obvious.

At this point a dedicated, sophisticated attacker essentially has video surveillance and audio monitoring throughout the house, yet we aren’t quite done as there are some more esoteric attacks against smart devices which can dwarf the simple risk of espionage. The kettle is a prime example of this – initially it does not seem a particularly dangerous device, at worst someone could maybe cause a cold

Some of the largest attacks have been enabled by running a botnet consisting of poorly secured CCTV cameras, usually without any monitoring by the owner.

cup of tea or keep reboiling the water. It’s the second one that becomes a problem (not with all smart kettles, but there are models which have this combination of flaws) where the thermoregulator is implemented in software rather than hardware, and runs on the same general purpose computing as the ‘smart’ controls.

Someone wanting to cause real damage, aware of these issues and how to exploit them, could turn off the safety cut out and repeatedly boil the kettle until it ran dry. At that point, continuing to heat causes a clear fire risk.

The same sort of risks apply with the toaster, oven, and some other smart appliances. Another example is, say, a smart freezer – a subtle attacker could cause it to thaw and refreeze overnight, repeatedly, spoiling any food without the owner’s knowledge. While food poisoning is not as immediately dangerous as a kettle bursting into flames, the risk is clear.

Unfortunately at the moment there is no real remedy to many of these problems, except a comprehensive

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 48 security review of any ‘smart’ devices being purchased by experts.

Such a review gets expensive quickly, though many pen testing companies showcase their capabilities by highlighting the risks in commercial products (and in ‘smart’ toys, such as teaching a doll to swear or a teddy bear to share video with strangers) and making them publicly available.

Another possibility to reduce the risk would involve making the house network highly secure and isolated, with only a well-protected connection from the phone, but as many of these devices rely on cloud services for management this would remove any benefits of the intelligence.

What is most needed is education about these risks, and a demand from manufacturers for demonstrably

secure products based on the best practices established over years of information and cyber security. Without this we will continue to see the attack surface multiply year on year, as more and more ‘smart’ devices are turned against their owners. For the time being, knowing the risks these devices pose, being aware of how they can be misused, and knowing how to isolate them when necessary (or simply not purchasing them) will have to do.

In the next issue we’ll be looking at a brief introduction to how you can hide (to a point) from OSINT, and make information on yourself harder to find. We won’t be covering the full scope as the field is huge, just a few simple basics to start with and some recommendations on where to find a lot more information.

Where will it lead you, and what will it have you doing?

Brace yourself because you'll discover there are many different moving parts and applications of practice in this business.

In the past, I viewed Executive Protection (EP) as persons who provided corporate level protection. This was the guy who only walked with the CEO, politician, or other important corporate executives and dignitaries.

With my limited understanding, I didn't think of those who drive these same individuals as being considered Executive Protection agents as well.

Let me share two of the best lessons for anyone in this business. One is to realize that learning never stops. It doesn't matter if you are new or have worked in the industry for many years, the moment you think you know it all is the moment the light in your career will start to go dim. Number two is always keep trusted, seasoned, and proven professionals as mentors and advisors. This is not to say you won't have your own way of doing things, every business has its own flavor. Some can guide you as you get started or if you hit a bump in the road. One thing that has helped as I grow my business is to be able to receive advice as well as crucial critique. I believe it is out of genuine concern for my growth and future and never an act of malice or contempt.

When I earnestly assess a situation, adjustments can be made which works best for my business and family.

As a new EPS, I continue to study and learn to

be the best I can in the field. Before researching, I had no idea that there is so much to learn about the business. With that in mind, I looked again at my thoughts and opinions on the true definition of Executive Protection. Furthermore, on a recent assignment, I was caught a bit off guard after a briefing the day before the task begun.

This briefing disclosed a client being protected from sex traffickers, the involvement of a cult, and 24-hour surveillance for the victim and family.

Of course, I thought this was surely a case for the FBI. During the briefing, I realized it wasn't that simple. With any assignment, it is crucial to understand all details and facts before making assumptions. Victims don't all start out in the same manner. Some situations start with persons voluntarily engaged with others and end up trapped. The key is for all EP personnel to be fully briefed, trained, and ready to adjust to any situation.

They prey on the unhappy, rebellious, adventurous, or dissatisfied child, or they may just kidnap their victims. Let me be clear, it's definitely not always done by force and many times it only takes some clever coercion; coercion that'll have the victim making the decision on their own to want to be a part of this lifestyle.

And maybe they truly do, but then the question becomes, why. Why do most join street gangs?

Because in many cases, the gang will be the family that the child feels their biological family isn't being.

While we are protecting, there are Private Investigators who are investigating. You can get new information at any hour or minute. It can be updated information on the players in the trafficking organization, new vehicle descriptions and license plates to look out for, cell phone pings (if being tracked, and our suspects were being) and a host of other intel.

These criminal groups have been known to check into hotels, hospitals and anywhere they think the victim may

be publicly housed, even if it's just to make eye contact with the victim and convince them of the still-present threat. And not always the danger to them, but perhaps to a family member. They'll have the victim feeling their family isn't safe if they don't rejoin the cult of sex traffickers.

Many times, the victim wants to go back because the parents can be a contributing reason in an already strained family situation. There could be mental health issues, drug addiction, plain old rebellion and other factors that can go wrong amid the aftercare In the parents' frustration, they'll use threats of taking money away, and abandonment if the child doesn't comply. When you have counselors suggesting mental institutions and halfway houses, over going home, no cellphone or social media use until they show signs of stability and maturity, there is going to be a battle to keep the young adult stable enough, long enough to clear their head. And after all of this, there are no guarantees that the person won't flee or go missing again.

This was a physically, and emotionally draining assignment. A different story to tell, and one which unexpectedly became a part of my own story over the time I spent with them.

A week quickly turned into a month, and every day brought surprises and uncertainty. I just wanted to share a bit of my experience as I go through my thoughts lying awake when I should be resting.

After spending a week with this 21-year-old victim I must admit, it started to feel a little personal and at times I've wished I had the resources and ability to hunt down people like this and do a Liam Neeson, from Taken, on them.

WHAT IS EXECUTIVE PROTECTION? to feel the hurt too. It hurts enough so that your natural instinct is to wish you could respond in a manner that won't allow there to be another victim.

To see so much torment, in the family and with the victim is saddening and hurtful. It's hard being asked questions you can't answer, which should only be answered by professional counselors.

You try to avoid getting too close and personal, as with all assignments, and mainly it was a case of observing, reporting, and being prepared to move or protect at a moment's notice. Although this assignment had many similarities to most other EP assignments, there was added stress because of the subject matter and possible targeting of not just one person, but potentially a whole group.

Here's a great take away, very successful persons in this field must have excellent adjustment ability. No matter what the assignment, if they

call on us and we accept the work, then we must be ready to adapt so, we can successfully accomplish a task that we may have never have been trained for. We must always prepare to be our best so we can do our best, regardless.

We'll make mistakes, but there's no excuse for not being knowledgable, and mentally and physically prepared for the task.

In the end, what is Executive Protection? It is the provision of protection and safe movement for whoever requests it.

Through this experience, I have grown and learned so much, not merely about Executive Protection, but about myself too.

It doesn't matter what the brief is if we accept the assignment, we must always be trained, ready, and professional in executing those services.

Last issue I introduced LTE radios using PoC or Push-to-talk Over Cellular as the future of group communications. This time we will take a deeper dive into the technology and look at some of the hardware available.

So how does it work?

Essentially, a PoC service is like any other client server system that you use. Take Skype as an example that many people will be familiar with. This is what is commonly referred to as a ‘client-server’ application. The Skype app sits on you phone, tablet, laptop or desktop

and is in constant communication with the Skype servers out there in the cloud.

When someone calls up your ID and initiates a message or a call, the server does the heavy lifting, to make sure the two are connected correctly, and that, as far as is possible, that call

PoC is the same, except it is made to look and feel like a regular, conventional two-way radio. So you still have a client application that sits on an LTE radio terminal, talking to a server, and when you press the PTT button, all of the other users also within your talkgroup or channel, will hear your message. Exactly like a regular two-way radio call, but with no limits on range or coverage.

Let’s bust a myth again!! Some people will tell you this isn’t real radio, because it is using the cellular data network rather than UHF or VHF……wrong!!

As I pointed out last issue, a cellphone is nothing more than a fancy two-way radio. It still uses radio waves to communicate from the phone to the cell tower and back again, so in this respect, the only significant difference from a UHF or VHF radio are the operating frequencies being used.

All PoC systems comprise three elements: service, airtime and hardware.

Let’s look in more detail at each one.

Service The PoC service is the bit that gives you the client-server interaction.

There are a few options available to you, and very often it is a matter of personal preference that will decide which one you go for.

The most well known is probably Zello, and they have done a lot to further the use and understanding of PoC. Zello is popular because it is free (up to a point!). Everyone can have a free account, you can sign up as an individual, and it takes just a few minutes.

You can then setup your own channel (more commonly called talkgroups) and give others access to it, and now you are on the air!

Zello has millions of users across the world taking advantage of the free service.

WiFi is a good choice if you are operating within a known geographic boundary, such as a house, large estate, shopping centre or other such location, already server with good WiFi coverage. But be aware that you will be sharing this WiFi connection with many others, and when not gets busy, you may notice an impact on the performance.

In circumstances such as this, we would recommend configuring the WiFi to give priority to your devices, or to put in an overlyWiFi network purely for your PoC devices; both of these we regularly do for our PoC clients.

Network operators will insist they treat PAYG SIM’s no different to contract SIM’s but a mass of anecdotal evidence would argue differently.

Cellular data is the right choice if you are on the move and are never sure where you are going to be headed.

Most first and second world countries are well served with 3G & 4G but take care in selecting

your network. We all have experience of poor coverage areas from our own airtime provider, so do your homework to ensure you pick the one most suited for your area, or better still, bring in a professional company to advise.

Make sure you go for contract SIM’s rather than pay as you go (PAYG) SIM’s to ensure continuity of service and reliability. The network operators will insist they treat PAYG SIM’s no different to contract SIM’s but a mass of anecdotal evidence would argue differently.

Also beware of multinetwork roaming SIM’s they are not always what they appear to be. We have had horrendous performance results using multi-network SIM’s to the extent that we are now swapping all of our SIM’s for both our clients, and our extensive PoC hire fleet, back to single operator roaming SIM’s.

Find a plan that allows a set data bundle to be shared across a range of devices, and you will be even better covered.

Hardware Here we have an ever growing choice. In the simplest of terms you can do what we call BYOD or Bring Your Own Device. If you already have a smartphone, chances are you can download a PoC app onto it and get up and running.

However, approach with caution! We all commonly use our smart devices for a whole range of things other than talking, so unless you are going to be doing very little of the latter, our advice to clients is to stick with a dedicated device for your PoC requirements.

Give an operator a radio however, or what looks like a radio, and they will use it like a radio. We’ve seen this phenomenon time and again, and it is real!

So choose your PoC hardware wisely. We only offer hardware to our clients that we and our partner organisations have tested and approved for use with Lynx7, our PoC service.

but there is also a lot of rubbish.

If you are bold enough to try to source hardware yourself, ensure you look for the CE marking indicating that it is certified for operation within the UK & Europe, but don’t stop there.

Insist on seeing the CE Certification itself. If it cannot be produced then it probably hasn’t been through the approvals process so don’t touch it.

Better still, find a company that you trust and that has a good pedigree, not only in the technology but in the industry. That doesn’t have to be us (but we’d be delighted if it was!), just make sure you take good advice before parting with you money!

There is nothing fancy about that nor any major insights into the human purpose here. What there is thought, is how serious professionals are now looking at the skill and the level of work that is being put into the development of it. Even deeper, how the industry at large is looking at the melding of this and other soft skills into their daily operations. The level of work put into the development of the skill is where I have seen the gap in training.

Tone and body language should be something that is also added to the soft skill development.

Something as small as talking with your palms facing upward can impact a conversation.

Most students don’t know where to start in developing the skill sets needed to make them the go-to-guy for their team and/or client. Hard skills are easy to figure out where to start. Take a driving class, get your TCCC, or attend a Bill Rogers Shooting course.

The most favored method is to carry the handgun on the same side as the dominant/strong hand (strong side).

It is believed that this is the safest method of carry because when the handgun is drawn from the holster, it points in a straight line directly at the target. The cross-draw is where the gun is on the opposite side of the body to the dominant hand, so you have to reach across the body to draw the handgun.

Personally, I see no problem with cross-draw.

Many people claim that

it is dangerous since the handgun sweeps through a 180-degree arc to get from the holster to pointing at the target, which could mean the handgun could be pointing at bystanders.

It must be remembered, however, that whatever method of carry you use, before you go on the street, you should do as much practice as possible.

As I've said before; If you don't think you can draw

your handgun without it going off by accident, you should not be carrying it.

It is easier to take a handgun from someone carrying on the strong side than cross-draw. You can come up behind someone carrying strong-side and

If your gun is carried crossdraw, you have easy access to it with both your left and right hand

when I was working as a security operative in South Africa in 1994.

My day usually started in the evening when the first task was to provide cover for the staff of a liquor store when they closed up and left with the day's takings. The store was in 'a colorful' area just outside of a large township, and I would say that mine was the only white face for a good mile or so. I took it for granted that everyone knew I was armed — I wouldn't be there otherwise. The store closed at the same time every day, so, it was hard to avoid setting a pattern of the time I'd be dropped off each day. To get behind the grilled counter of the store, I usually had to push through a crowd of semi-intoxicated people spending their day's pay.

It was my driver's job to cover me until I got behind the grill, which depending on the driver, did not always happen. And in any case, once I merged with the crowd, there was very little support the driver could offer me. Initially, I carried my 4-inch .357 strong side but soon changed to cross-draw

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 48 when I realized that, when in the crowd, it was easy for someone to bump into me, feel where I was carrying my gun and potentially grab it from behind.

If I got into a physical confrontation with someone that would require my gun hand to deal with it, I would then not be able to reach the .357 with my weak hand. At least with cross-draw, I stood a better chance of getting to the gun - if I were not dropped in the initial attack. Realistically, in retrospect, I would have stood little chance if I had been attacked in the crowd by two or three assailants with blunt or edged weapons.

I would have been lucky to get the .357 out.

What many people seem to forget is that carrying a handgun can actually make you a target. In places like Africa, Latin America, and in some Caribbean

Islands where people live in extreme poverty, a handgun is a very valuable commodity; criminals routinely target and attack people solely for their firearms.

Even in developed countries, a criminal can make money from a handgun: They can commit robberies or settle scores and then sell the weapon, etc.

The tell-tale lump under your shirt could be there to show your friends that you bought the new Glock or to warn others that you are armed and dangerous, but to a professional, it just means you have a gun, and he can take it off you. If you carry a weapon, no one else should know.

Don't think all criminals or terrorists will be intimidated because you flash a gun at them.

If you're not drawing it with the intention to shoot to kill, keep it concealed!

Fit for Purpose

Motivation & Mindset Struggle will be experienced by every single one of us, at differing intensities, durations and regularities; it is one of the only true guarantees in life.

The more robust we are physically and mentally, the more we cultivate a purpose, then the easier it will be to adapt and thrive. This is something that needs to be a work in progress continually and approached individually.

Approaching a situation I read a quote years ago that has always stayed with me: “If circumstances cannot be changed, attitude is everything�.

Easier said than done I know, but finding something personal to you, something that you have searched out or stumbled upon that allows you to break the train of negative thought and manifest it into a positive (or at least make it bearable) can be a real game changer.

I reiterated this quote to my Son again and again throughout his time in training for The Parachute Regiment, a classic example of a long running series of scenarios that were out

FIT FOR PURPOSE of his control. All he had was the ability to accept the situation and adjust his attitude accordingly to prevail.

Make uncomfortable choices Knowingly taking on something potentially uncomfortable when there is a softer, easier option will develop a steely resolve and a confidence, so when situations get difficult, you will more effectively bear the burden Below are two scenarios for a regular day. Now I

know first hand that jobs in some industries are not typical or necessarily routine, but this can also be used as an excuse to take the easy option and justify poor choices, so use the templates and attribute them to your own situation Option 1 Wake up, immediately grab phone to check Facebook, climb out of bed, get straight into a hot shower, get dressed in your centrally heated room, eat cereal and drink coffee before beginning commute, getting as

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 48 close to the workplace as transport allows. Take lifts and escalators, sit for long periods, eat processed foods and takeaways and remain in artificial environments when there are options to get into natural ones.

Option 2 Climb out of bed, open windows or go immediately outside (weather dependent, or not!), mobilise and oxygenate the body, gain some mental clarity. Get into a hot shower, limber up the muscles, breath deeply and then turn the shower to its coldest setting. Attempt to control the shock and keep the breathing as even and regulated as possible and work to still the mind.

Maintain this for as long as possible, knowing that the body will adapt as it gets over the initial shock (and will improve with regularity and practice).

In the Western world, having a busy mind is all too common with the proliferation of technology and a plenitude of distractions, so it's helpful to practice ways of reducing the chatter and learn to focus.

Get dressed (any room will be warm compared to the cold water and the bodies internal furnace will have been ignited). Prepare hot drink and put in thermal mug to drink on journey, delay eating initially and pack food prepared the night before to break fast in a few hours. Park or get

off a stop a bit further away from the work place and walk in. Take the stairs where possible, if job involves sitting for extensive periods, set reminders to break the position, standing and moving the body or if possible going for a short walk (outside preferably).

Go outside for breaks and to the most natural environment possible within the vicinity.

Do I choose Option 2 without fail everyday?

Absolutely not, but I will incorporate as many elements of Option 2 as I can and I will never follow the majority of Option 1 whatever situation I find myself in.

Set regular challenges This doesn’t need to be an epic, physical and mental endeavour; regular challenges can be something out of your norm or comfort zone. It may involve holding concentration for longer on a task,

solving, attempting something that you fear, enduring different forms of deprivation, a physical challenge. It could take a few seconds, be a split decision and spontaneous or a meticulously planned, lengthy event.

Improve your physicality Spend time working on your physical capabilities: mobility, strength, coordination, balance and endurance, all the

qualities that improve human capability and effectiveness. Analyse the overall effectiveness of the physical training you engage in, what are the motivations? Purely aesthetics? Bowing to peer pressure, fads or the collective? Does it noticeably improve everyday life for the better or break the body and mind down further?

Don’t burn the candle at both ends

Everyone’s mind and body are different and we need to tap into them to make the best decision, but also know when we need to put the hard work in and stop bluffing ourselves, a tightrope at times.

No Cutting: Get To The Back Of The Line Throughout my nine years of experience in the Executive Protection (EP) industry, I'd like to think that I've achieved many significant accomplishments.

Having traveled to over 30 countries, building executive protection and estate teams, embarking on 10 major worldwide tours and transitioning from field agent to Director of Security. Despite my successes, I've still felt like a student at best, but now finally considering myself a Specialist. Naively, many young protectors are eager to consider themselves "specialists" without undergoing the proper mentorship and gaining the practical experience needed to hold this title.

While doing some research and reading through different EP online

forums, I've observed an unfortunate trend that has developed within some of our young protectors in the industry. After completing basic training and obtaining minimal experience, many new protectors are not seeking to advance their knowledge further, leading to stunted potential growth.

Outside of the martial arts world, many view the black belt 1st dan as the highest level of skill. However, those who have studied the art understand that the 1st dan symbolizes a practical understanding of the basics that gives you a foundation to learn the true craft then. Similarly, EP school provides the bare

minimum basic training and knowledge of the Executive Protection Industry.

This is where advanced training, mentorship, and practical experience bridges the gap, allowing a generalist to transition into a specialist. Without this necessary progression, a generalist does not learn the appropriate times and techniques in which to employ the tools they've gained. Through mentorship and experience, a generalist learns where they are proficient, as well as where their skills need sharpening.

When I graduated EP school at the age of 21, like the generalist I am referring to, I thought I was prepared to work with any client, anywhere in the world. Luckily for me, I had seasoned specialists that sat me down to teach me the process. These specialist mentors came from various backgrounds and worked in different protection platforms, such as highnet-worth individuals (HNWI), celebrity & entertainment, corporate, and dignitary protection.

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 48 Fortunately, these seasoned professionals saw my potential while working in their respective areas. This presented opportunities for me to work with them in their details. These experiences gave me an understanding of the nuances of each of the different sectors. I quickly chose the celebrity & entertainment field because of my educational background in 'Music Business and Marketing.'

Taking into account my age and personality, this segment of the security industry was the best fit for me.

Once I made my decision,

I researched everyone in the field and began to develop my craft by taking the necessary training courses. I took a training course with Elijah Shaw and soon after I was working for his global security firm servicing high profile celebrities. As this was my first detail, I started from the bottom.

Initially, I worked the halls and walls, there was also security driving and even performing the work of what some might consider personal concierge/ assistant. Experiencing this process gave me a greater understanding of the intricate working parts of a protection detail.

NO CUTTING I began to further my training and networking by attending summits and conferences. During one of these conferences, I met two men who would soon become my mentors, Eric Konohia and Avery Mitchell. Konohia took me under his wing and taught me the responsibilities of the person who sits in the front right seat ("FRS"). He fine-tuned my basic knowledge of executive protection and consequently turned me into a detail leader.

Mitchell conditioned my mindset and developed my mental acuity. I would say the mentorship of these two seasoned specialists propelled me into being where I am today.

I dedicate this article to young generalists in the industry, hopefully expressing the importance of not skipping the process of becoming a specialist. In this industry, the key is to stay the course, and eventually, you will have the opportunity to become a leader in the field. Over the past nine years, I've learned from my mentors, both from their successes and failures.

Approximately five years ago, Mitchell connected me with an opportunity that allowed me to showcase my years of preparation. I accepted a three-week detail assignment that soon became a full-time placement. Fast forward years later, and I am the Director of Security and also own a global security company.

Clients are often aware of the holes in the services being provided; as an Executive Protection Specialist, the services we provide should always be at an executive level.

Be humble and enjoy the journey, there is wisdom in getting to the back of the line. Perfect your craft, wait your turn, and eventually, you too will move up to the front.

My advice to those just starting out is to be humble, welcome criticism, seek out a mentor, and always be a student. Following these steps will ensure your sustainability and relevance in the industry.

2019 PIRACY REPORT By: Ed Hill

Maritime piracy has co-existed alongside maritime trade as far back as commercial history can be traced.

Pirates are and always have been not only a considerable problem to maritime trade but also the perpetrators of many dreadful crimes. The issue of piracy at sea gained notoriety in 2008 when the crisis on the Somali coast reached its peak. In the Gulf of Aden, approximately 100 acts of piracy were reported on a daily basis. The attacks had a significant impact on maritime trade but also bought massive financial gains for the pirates.

Fast forward to today, and thanks to the efforts of the international community, particularly the private maritime security industry, the situation around Somalia has markedly improved. However, statistics suggest that the piracy problem on a global scale is still very active.

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 48 In the first half of 2019, the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre recorded 78 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships worldwide, compared with 107 incidents for the same period of 2018.

Despite the downward trend, the reality of the global piracy problem is highlighted in the following statistics.

The first half of 2019 saw: • 57 vessels boarded by pirates • 38 crew members taken hostage • 37 were kidnapped for ransom • One seafarer killed

Somali pirates have plagued these waters for over a decade and joint international efforts have gone a long way to reduce the number of attacks.

The global piracy problem is widespread, but it is more prevalent in certain regions.

Here we shall break it down into those regions more commonly affected.

On 1st May 2019, the designated High Risk Area (HRA) was reduced even further.

Nevertheless, on 21st April a fishing dhow was seized by pirates off the coast of

The pirates then proceeded to navigate the captured dhow along the Somali coastline using it as a mother ship to attack another vessel, the FV Adria. This attack took place in the Indian Ocean, some 280 nautical miles off the coast of Somalia.

In a matter of hours, the European Union’s counterpiracy force EU NAVFOR Somalia Operation Atalanta had responded to the attack. Two days

later, the incident was over with five suspected pirates detained and 23 hostages released.

Speaking of the incident, Operation Commander Rear Admiral Antonio Martorell Lacave said, “this incident clearly demonstrates that piracy and armed robbery at sea off the coast of Somalia has not been eradicated.”

Gulf of Guinea world piracy hotspot The seas around West Africa remain the world’s most dangerous for piracy. Of the 75 seafarers taken hostage on board or kidnapped for ransom worldwide so far this year, 62 were captured in the Gulf of Guinea, off the coasts of Nigeria, Guinea, Togo, Benin and Cameroon. An IMB piracy report reveals that 73% of all kidnappings at sea and 92% of hostage-takings have taken place in the Gulf of Guinea.

Advice for Seafarers Being aware of the threat and making the necessary

plans is the first step to a safe passage. The implementation of ship protection measures, remaining vigilant and disciplined when transiting through an area of high risk is paramount. Early detection of an approaching suspicious craft is key to prevent boarding and gives time to raise the alarm and if needed, retreat into a citadel.

Although great efforts have been taken to address the issue, maritime piracy continues to plague the seas. Stay abreast of worldwide pirate incidents by registering with the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre to receive free email reports.

Somalia Fatalities Reported in Roadside Bomb Explosion in Wanlaweyn District, Lower Shabelle Region Two soldiers and a civilian were killed in a roadside bomb blast in the Wanlaweyn district of Lower Shabelle region. Reports indicate that an improvised explosive device (IED) was triggered by a motorbike in the Caligaad area of Wanlaweyn.

Further details regarding the incident are awaited.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Cameroon Fatalities Reported after Vessel Capsizes Off Atlantic Coast; Dozens Remain Missing At least three people have died and over 90 others are still missing after a passenger ferry sank off the Atlantic coast of Cameroon.

The ferry operated by the Achouka Shipping Company was travelling from Nigeria to Tiko Wharf in the Southwest region. A spokesman for the Cameroon Navy said that 100 people were rescued during search and rescue operations which are still ongoing. It is currently unclear what caused the vessel to sink, although early investigations show that the ferry had encountered rough weather.

Americas St. Lucia Government Orders National Shutdown Ahead

of Arrival of Tropical Storm Dorian The national government has ordered a shutdown of the island. This measure has been put in effect due to the approaching Tropical Storm Dorian. Local authorities anticipate that Dorian will be a Category One Hurricane during its approach to the island.

During the shutdown, all residents of the island are urged to stay indoors. Local police will stop anyone on the street and will treat them with suspicion. The shutdown will remain in effect until the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) gives the authorities an all clear.

Currently, Tropical Storm Dorian has sustained winds of 60mph (96 km/h) and is moving in a north-westerly direction at a speed on 14 mph (22 km/h). The storm will bring heavy rains and strong winds to St Lucia and other Islands along its way.

Guns on the Table One of the biggest reasons that gun discussions often don't gain traction is the two sides are often comparing apples and rocks.

Those who are for gun control are often discussing death and emotion, while those who are pro-gun may speak of technical aspects (semi-automatic vs. automatic) and entitlement (the 2nd Amendment).

Regardless of your position on the gun debate, it's hard for even the most objective people to make sense of multiple dead and wounded lying in a parking lot. When hardened Second Amendment

advocates lecture the antigun lobby on the subject of firearm functionality, their comments often sound tonedeaf; resulting in a loss of support from neutrals and the undecided.

Add to the mix, self-serving politicians, lobbyists and commentators on both sides with political agendas, along with the media, who are compelled to fill 24hour news cycles, you have the perfect recipe

Throw in terms like "military-grade" and weapons of war, and the sensationalism meter and emotional quotient goes off the chart. What does military grade mean anyway? Does it refer to the materials of the firearm? Does it refer to the operating system; semi-automatic, automatic, or three round burst?

Consider at the military M4 rifle, which resembles the civilian AR15, while it may look similar, they actually operate very differently.

The military version of the rifle comes equipped with fully-automatic or threeround-burst capabilities (machine gun). However, that is not the same functionality as the AR15.

The AR15 operates like all modern handguns, one bullet per one squeeze of the trigger.

What does military grade mean anyway? Does it refer to the materials of the firearm? Does it refer to the operating system semi-automatic, automatic, or three round burst?

With the AR15, what causes death and injury is not necessarily the type of round fired. Most modern firearms are deadly force tools designed to cause severe bodily harm or death, regardless of whether they are handguns, shotguns or rifles. Every traditional

DISSECTING THE GUN DEBATE hunting rifle on the market (i.e., 30-06, .270, .300) is significantly more potent than the AR15 round.

It isn't necessarily the 30-round magazine either; it is the fact that active shooters are typically the only ones doing the shooting (they have a force monopoly) in an often highly confined space and with the absence of capable guardians to repel the threat. That is why you see shootings in schools, malls, churches, movie theaters, etc. If you gave a shooter five-shot revolvers and put them in a congested area, you would also have a high injury and death rate.

If we allow the mass public to become misinformed, it leads to bad policymaking, and bad laws; 'feel-good legislation' and over legislating doesn't serve anyone. Let me be clear, I too want to have a safe world for our children to grow up in. I am just saying that many of the proposals brought forth will not mitigate violence. Here is a perfect example; many people are for universal background checks, and I support the idea. However, until the background check process also cross-

references medical history, it will be woefully incomplete. But you can't cross-reference medical history because of the HIPAA privacy laws. So, until you change the HIPAA laws finding people who are medically adjudicated not authorized to own a firearm, you will still have a voluntary checkbox.

Question 11F of the federal firearm form, 4473, states, "have you ever been adjudicated as mentally defective OR have you ever been committed to a mental institution." Had the authorities been able to cross-reference the Virginia Tech Shooter's medical history, he would not have been able to purchase a firearm legally. Also, just a reminder, he killed 32 people with a handgun, not an AR15. Again, the absence of the capable guardians to initially repel the threat and not the type of firearm used is what caused the death and destruction.

When it comes to closing the private gun sale loophole, that could be instantly solved or significantly impacted by allowing private citizens to access the same National Instant

Similar to when people go to auto auctions to buy automobiles, and some third-party mechanics can check the roadworthiness of a vehicle for a nominal fee. Most FFL dealers charge $5.00 to run the background check process on prospective buyers.

I grew up in a very politically active family, and I learned long ago, "If you are not at the table, then you are on the menu."

When it comes to safety and violence reduction, I don't believe in outsourcing that responsibility to people who don't understand violence mitigation. The majority of the proposals surfaced are reactive ones or suggestions which don't get us in front of the crisis. Also, everything is not solved by more laws, hell, we don't even enforce our existing laws on the books! Murder is already illegal, and it has not deterred one active shooter or terrorist. Felons cannot legally own firearms, yet those laws have also not stopped criminals from securing firearms. The majority of these firearms are stolen and thereby, once

People often ask why does a civilian need an AR15?

Why not, they are legal semi-automatic firearms just like most modernday handguns? As a lawabiding citizen, I should have the enhanced ability to protect my family and home from extreme violence. I don't care if the source of violence is religious extremism or desperation like we saw with the civil unrest during hurricane Katrina and Maria. I reviewed a video earlier this week, where seven (7) bad guys

were trying to break into a property. The roads may be impassable for law enforcement or the response time may be delayed or nonexistent due to the conditions. The speed of violence happens in seconds, not minutes, so every citizen must be prepared to be their own first line of defense, possibly for an extended time.

For a small frame person, an AR15 will be far easier for them to shoot accurately than a handgun or a 12 gauge shotgun. And just because one person commits a crime, you should not

When another person commits a DUI (Driving Under the Influence), no one proposes taking your car away, so why would you propose limiting my right to own a firearm based on another's actions? There are over 10,000 deaths per year in vehicles due to DUI. Every 48 minutes, someone is killed by a drunk driver.

This means you are far more likely to be killed by a drunk driver than an active shooter with a rifle. Look at FBI statistics for the last 10 years, and you will see that deaths by all rifles – hunting, sporting or assault rifles account for less than 500 deaths per year or 1 – 2% of homicides.

I have been preaching violence reduction for years.

However, if you really want to mitigate violence, you have to start getting in front of the crisis. That begins by understanding aggression, particularly emerging aggression, not merely focusing on the tool of terror.

We also have to encourage our government officials to provide both the money and manpower to stop homegrown violent extremism (domestic terrorists) as they are the greatest threat to our collective country's safety.

The Anti-Defamation League did an analysis of Domestic Terrorist attacks in the US from 2009 to 2018, and it found that 3% of the attacks were

Dale, while I know you personally, could you share some of your background?

I was in the military police in the Army, which I consider one of the best training schools I’ve ever attended. While I was in college I began working

on the school security patrol, then was hired as a jailer and nighttime dispatcher at the Shasta County Sheriff’s Dept. I was still going to college when I transferred to the Redding, CA police Dept. When I finished the community college

Police training was not so formal in those days so, because of my experience and education I was exempted from their academy training and began working as a report taker on the desk.

In a short time I was given a partner and patrol district. During my senior year I applied at the Secret Service and the rest is history.

After spending a little over five years with PPD I was transferred to the San Diego field office. I did a couple temporary assignments with President Carter.

When President Reagan was inaugurated I attended and worked as a protective intelligence agent to respond to any potential threats. The interesting thing about that was that when Reagan was inaugurated as governor of California, I was the only Sacrament Police officer to work all of his inaugural events.

He hired me and I was with him for over a year. During that time we traveled extensively including trips to Europe.

I was also able during that time (when he went back to Saudi for vacation) to pick up assignments with a CEO from a large company in Mexico.

What differences have you noticed in executive protection from when you first started?

The primary difference I have experienced is the professionalization of the industry. Also when I began there were very few EP companies and EP training was limited to Dr. Kobetz, ESI, and Tony Scotti. Another

difference I have seen is the growth and demand of the industry. When I began there was very little demand for protection specialists.

I feel I was one of the pioneers in the field.

You recently coauthored a book, An Introduction to Celebrity Protection & Touring with Elijah Shaw. This is coming after your book, An Introduction to Executive Protection, that many consider an industry bible. What are some similarities that your book (intro to E.P) and Elijah's book have in common?

The easiest to say in the similarities is that the principles of protection don’t change.

Procedures and practices are the same. Candidly speaking, even the instances of boredom doesn’t change.

What was something you (the Co-author) got upon completing this project?

Before we started the project I felt honored to be asked by Elijah to work with him on it. It afforded me an

opportunity to make a personal relationship and long friendship with a good man. When writing a book the intent is to inform and entertain the readers. I feel we accomplished that. It also is a learning opportunity for the writer to think in terms he hadn’t before.

Meaning I learned more than I knew before. It also gave me a chance to stretch my imagination and find new ways of

expressing standard material and to reach a wide audience.

What is your favorite chapter and why?

The last chapter is always the favorite. This is where you write THE END. It is a relief; the baby has been in the womb, but now it is being born. All that is left is to reread, rewrite, reread again, rewrite, edit. then proof read and send it off.

It never fails, it always seems like when I’m writing my monthly column for The Circuit (among the last thing I do before we close the issue), I’m overseas somewhere.

However, I’m happy to report this time it’s a little different.

While for decades now, I have traveled intensively on assignment, and am known to carve a day or three in for personal adventures, this is actually the first time I’ve used the words vacation and

This was a cycle that repeated itself, time and again and when I finally slowed down long enough to think about it, I saw that there was no end in sight. relaxation in a very long while. The reason I bring it up is that this is an industry that is tough to get into, and once there, will demand quite a bit from us. As such, we as Protectors will make work our priority, sometimes at the expense of other very important things like family, friends and just physical and mental wellbeing.

I myself am speaking from first-hand experience having throughout the years missed birthdays and other special dates for myself and others, causing disappointment, strain and aggravation. This was a cycle that repeated itself, time and again and when I finally slowed down long enough to think about it, I saw that there was no end

in sight. I can recall that being the cornerstone of my position when it was time to renegotiate my contract with a major client of my firm. More money is always welcome, but a better work/life balance was what I was looking for.

Of course that may be easier said than done, particularly when you are new to the industry and need to pay all the dues you can to establish yourself. I don’t disagree with that mentality, what I do say is, always try and keep the big picture in mind. You are working to provide for self or family as well as enjoy the fruits of labor. Think of a blue collar worker with a very physical job who puts in long hours for the last 40 years and is looking forward to his

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 48 retirement so that he can at that point start enjoying his life. However, what happens if, once he reaches it, he’s too old or ill to take advantage of the freedom he now possesses? This can’t be the end result of a career in which so much is required of us, yet how do we course correct, if we are already on the path?

One way is to, set the intention. I’m not saying that in a new age, spiritual sense, but rather, go into every project, every new company, every year, with an idea of what you want to get from it. It can be experience, money, or whatever floats your boat, but you should have purpose. That purpose should be the path you attempt to follow as you build your career, but we have to keep in mind that we are so much more than the job.

I love photography and travel, and I’ve figured out how to follow my passions at the same time I navigate this industry and provide a high level of services to my clients. Yes, the name of the game is find work and keep it coming in, but that’s a means to

an end not the end itself.

So what’s your end?

When the shift concludes how do you feel? When your run concludes what will you have to show for it? Start thinking of these things now as this career is only one part of your life, and life is for living.
