Arthur Duff Arthur Duff is an U.S. artist born in Wiesbaden (Germany) in 1973. In Duff̓s work we can see a hypothesis of a spatial translation of light as a collective element. Light is thought of not as an external, atmospheric dimension but rather as a complex noetic space of a constant, everchanging flow of information. In his laser projections, which are based around a combination of luminous artificiality and spatialised language, Duff sees light as a metamorphic possibility prior to a transition into a universe of information, as a potentially infinite physical and dynamic material. This information (which is luminous, linguistic and structural) is treated as a concrete substance that can be modeled and spatialised, moving between two opposite extremes of complexity: on the one hand its fundamental form, which is photonic light, polarized in the laser beam and, on the other, language—its organizational postulate—which interests Duff in terms that are architectural rather than conventional or allusive.

three different portraits by estudio de producción The three films produced by estudio de producción by Rirkrit Tiravanija, Abraham Cruzvillegas and Cristian Manzutto, present three different ways of making a portrait. In Tiravanija̓s words, speaking about Lung Neaw: “it is not a documentary and not a narrative, perhaps it̓s more of a portraiture”. A portrait of a Pilgrim̓s Route where the main characters are nine architectural pieces by different designers, creating a dialogue with pilgrims in specific sites. A portrait of an old Thai man and his daily life walking to his old rice field and resting in his little Sala by the field, going to a local garden or forest to pick up herbs and vegetables to make dinner and bathing in the river in front of his house. A portrait of the Ajusco neighborhood in Mexico DF, seen through intertwining footage of the landscape with the unscripted moments of intimacy as normal couples make love. Abstract or intimate portraits which make the definition of documentary inadequate and limited. Estudio de producción For the last years, estudio de producción has evolved as a space for independent film production, focusing on contemporary artist films. www.estudiodeproduccion.net 10

Lung Neaw Visits His Neighbours A film by Rirkrit Tiravanija Mexico/Thailand, 2011, 154̓ – Presented by: estudio de producción – Produced by: Cristian Manzutto, Rirkrit Tiravanija – Associated Producer: kurimanzutto, Gavin Brown̓s enterprise – Camera: Cristian Manzutto, Rirkrit Tiravanija – Sound: Eva Sangiorgi, Chalermrat Kaweewattana – Picture, sound editing: Cristian Manzutto – Format: Super 16mm / colour – Language: Northern Thai “The film is a half documentary, half fiction. It was shot without a script and all the people in the film are real people from the location, so they are pretty much reacting to and talking with each other without a plan or direction. There is no narrative except for the fact that we were following Lung Neaw and his daily life” (Rirkrit Tiravanija). www.lungneawvisitsfilm.com Rirkrit Tiravanija Born in Buenos Aires in 1961, today is based in New York, Berlin, and Thailand. Tiravanija̓s installations and actions provide platforms for artistic, public and private activities—effectively blurring the boundaries that customarily separate them. His projects invite the public to enter into and literally

engage with his work; in fact, the active participation of the viewer is necessary for the work to be fully realised. Autoconstrucción A film by Abraham Cruzvillegas México, 2009, 63̓ – Presented by: estudio de producción – Produced by: Cristian Manzutto – Associated Producers: kurimanzutto – Video: HDV – Aspect Ratio: 16:9 / colour Through his interest in Autoconstrucción (self-construction), Cruzvillegas explores makeshift, handmade and recycled economies. Shot on location with non- professional actors and developed by a self-organized, guerrilla filmmaking cooperative, the film employs an unconventional narrative without dialogue, intertwining footage of the landscape with unscripted encounters and moments of intimacy. Cruzvillegas̓ film uses the predictable, mechanistic structure of early pornographic films to build a nonlinear story made up of fragments that break down the past and present, the neighbourhood̓s history and present, landscape and everyday life, into an abstract portrait. Abraham Cruzvillegas (Mexico City, 1968). He participated in 1994 in the V Havana Biennial; in 2002 in the XXV Sao Paulo Biennial; in

2003 in the L Venice Biennial; in 2005 in the 1st Torino Triennale; in 2008 in the Bienal de Cali (Colombia), in the X Havana Biennial, and the VII Bienal do Mercosul in Porto Alegre; in 2011 in Istanbul Biennial. In 2012 he is part of dOCUMENTA(13), in Kassel, and he will be part of IX Shanghai Biennale. Ruta A film by Cristian Manzutto Mexico/Switzerland, 2012, 50̓ A film comissioned by the Ruta del Peregrino project for 13th Architecture Biennale – Production: Lina Lasso, Felipe Trabanino – Camera, editing, sound: Cristian Manzutto – Camera assistant: Eva Sangiorgi – Editor assistant: Zazil Barba – Sound mix: estudio de sonido – Sound editor assist: M. Luz Orozco – Format: Super 16mm / Video HD – Sound: 5.1 – Language: Spanish. English subt. Each year, hundreds of people participate in the Pilgrim̓s Route, to meet the Virgin of Talpa, in the state of Jalisco. This religious voyage has taken place since the 17th Century, and now has architectural landmarks along the 117 km route, giving it an iconic narrative and relating the extraordinary landscape to the ritual. 9 pieces by different designers create a dialogue with pilgrims in specific sites. 11

LIGHT, The journey of a dress: 3 colours, 3 women, 3 cities Malìparmi presents, out of competition, “a focus on up-and-coming generations and a desire to experiment with creativity are crucial elements in our activitiesˮ, in the words of Annalisa Paresi, president of Malìparmi. “For this new initiative we̓ve linked the valuable contribution made by youthful minds to the production of a video, an instrument we̓ve always had a great belief in and one that we think is a highly effective way of inspiring emotional involvementˮ. “It̓s a light, experimental project that̓s full of emotion and strongly yearned. Fragments of normality and truth shot through with passion,” says Silvia Bisconti, Malìparmi̓s artistic director. Malìparmi turned to a talented young team, fertYlize: Maurizio Adamo (director and scriptwriter with Silvia Bisconti), Stefano Rinaldo (photography and editing), Maximiliaan Tropea (executive and pr). Silvia, Maurizio, Stefano and a small crew of five people shot the video, journeying across three cities in less than a week, embodying the concept of light truth. Malìparmi Femininity, passion, irony, creativity and innovation belong to Malìparmi’s DNA. Bags were the original brand product in the 1970s, made with exceptional care, embroidered, precious and very special. 14

The next step was the development of footwear and finally clothing, completing the line and creating the brand’s comprehensive image. Today the Malìparmi is distributed in prestigious boutiques in Italy and abroad, as well as in a growing number of single-brand sales points. www.maliparmi.it Light A film by Maurizio Adamo, 2012, 6̓ – Produced by: Malìparmi – Theme and script: Silvia Bisconti, Maurizio Adamo – Executive producer: Silvia Bisconti – Photography: Stefano Rinaldo – Editing: Stefano Rinaldo – The women: Simona Belotti, Julie Compans, Ayse Süeda Yasaman – Aspect Ratio: 16:9 Color The video tells of the journey of single dress in three different colours through the actions and attitudes of three women, filmed in the “normality” of their gestures, at moments when they are alone, in a private state of mind. At the same time we see the journey through their cities—Rome, expressing all our intensely Italian spirit, Paris, the symbol of elegance and creativity, and Istanbul, gateway to the East and a fascinating meeting-place of different cultures. A cast comprising only normal women, not models or actresses, each one of them with their own special story, personality and attitude.

IN OUR GHETTO kinabuti Kinabuti was born by a deep-set passion for fashion and inspired by a longterm vision for the Fashion Industry in Nigeria and Africa at large. The fashion house combines the creativity of exquisite African inspired designs and fabrics with an ethical approach to business, achieving this blend through utilising resources from its operating environment. kinabuti.blogspot.it In Our Ghetto A film by Marcus Werner He̓d Nigeria/UK, 2012, 27̓ – Produced by: Kinabuti – Co-producer: Pundersons Gardens – Editor: Edoardo Trowse – Music: Duncan Mighty and Nneka The film shows us the making of the ˮIn Our Ghetto” project. Instead of working with professional models, Kinabuti chose to launch its first collection with aspiring models from the waterfront communities of Port Harcourt, Niger Delta. From 160 participants, 22 were selected and trained by professionals in the skills of make-up, hairstyling, walking and the other elements needed to give them a deep understanding of the modelling profession, so that they could put it into practice during the Fashion Show and hopefully onwards developing professional modelling careers.

FOCUS ON Zoe Cassavetes The focus on Zoe Cassavetes will screen her most significant films. Here below an abstract of an interview by Valentin Barzaghi with Zoe made in 2009 when she was guest at Circuito Off with the short film “Samedi Soir”. Hello Zoe! Nice to meet you... How are you? Hello! I̓m very well, thanks for asking! The first thing you thought when you got up this morning? What the hell time is it? Describe yourself using three adjectives. Oh, it̓s hard to tell the truth... I̓m not good at this sort of thing. Whatever I say I would still feel too full of myself. Do you remember the first time you were on a set? Not really, but you know, both mom and dad have really made a lot of movies within the walls of our house, so it̓s like I grew up in a set. But then, you had to attend a school or will be enough “family life” to learn the fundamentals to become a good director? I̓ve always felt comfortable on a set 25

because that is where I was raised, but even today I still believe that he still has a lot to learn. Have you ever been afraid to be seen always and only as “the daughter of your father”? For better or for worse, I am my father̓s daughter. I can not deny and I̓m really proud of this great legacy. Let̓s say I already undergo a lot of stress resulting from my art, so if I should worry also about being good as my father it would be the end. I am me, with my own way of thinking and view on life... What is the best memory you have of your father on the set? John was a great leader. He had a boundless joy for what he did. He loved to “lead” and the set was the crucial contribution of every person. It was great in what he did, but could also be a very fun and caring man. I really enjoyed watching him work a lot and I was ecstatic to see what he could create with the actors in those moments. Which type of director are you on set? I love to run. I love the bonding that occurs during the filming. There is much enthusiasm to work with people and their ideas. So I always have a cheerful mood. I can not stand people yelling, it̓s something that I could not tolerate on a set because I am convinced 26

that nothing good would come out of a job done that way. I also love to see the characters in action. When you write something you imagine this in certain way, but the actors then bring always something new and innovative. What is the thing you fear most in the world? The lack of humanity that people have towards their own kind. Which things you just can̓t stand? Ignorance, closed mindedness and cruelty. Are you happy? It depends on the moment. What are you doing after this interview? I am ready to go back to work. Then good-by Zoe, have a good work.
