GBJB Great Britain Junior Branch Magazine
2015-16
Hello GBJB’ers After a very successful first edition of our GBJB Magazine, we are here with Issue #2, the year of 2015-16. By putting the yearly report into a magazine we have managed to shorten our Annual General Meeting, and reach far more GBJB’ers beyond those attend NJBF. It has also been a great way to showcase the great work and events GBJB do internationally and nationally. We are very proud of the dedicated and inspiring JB’ers we have, and this magazine is a fantastic way to celebrate what we have done. We would like to say a huge thank you to all those who got involved in GBJB this year, as a participant, as a staff member or facilitator, as a parent or branch member, without you GBJB would not be able to have so much to be proud off. As a JB Board we have loved the last year, from highlights of hosting Wild West Weekend through to another successful Project GB. We have also been working on adapting the way GBJB works and our events to only better the years to come. This magazine will show you this all. Enjoy the read, love from

NJBF’15
National Junior Branch Forum, September 4th-6th 2015, near Leeds
We had an awesome weekend where, during our AGM, our new board was elected, the LJRs for each branch were chosen; and we got to have a joint stepping-down celebration for Freya Caudwell and Vicky Tuff (our wonderful previous NJRs). Along with all of this excitement, we also changed a few things about the way GBJB and our AGMs are structured and run. We voted on motions that changed the voting system within our AGMs to an instant run-of system, we made the constitution easier to read and understand, and we made the treasurer a full member of the GBJB Board! (Finally!) We had sessions of educational content, sessions from EJBM & IJBC, we explored the JB Review and much more. Unfortunately, we said thank you and goodbye to Helen Scott, Róisín McFeely and Jess Wanless, as they stepped down from the Project GB committee. New members joined the committee later in the year to carry on the amazing work started by Helen, Jess, Róisín and Hanne. The JB Board of 2014-15 and 2015-16

NJB Day
90 Participants from National Junior Branch, hosted in Hull
This September Hull began the year with a bang by hosting National Junior Branch day. We enjoyed a successful turn out with representation from all chapters. With the theme ‘I’m not supposed to be here’ we had a fantastic variation of costumes; a few of our favourites were the mad scientist and obviously our very own cricketer Oliver Deane. During the day we obviously enjoyed a few classic CISV games such as quarters and whales and Dolphins but we also had a look at culture, perceptions and how things are not always as they seem. As this year’s NJB day overlapped with peace one day we got to see the moves that each chapter had to offer by attempting our own ‘one day one dance’. Thanks to everybody for attending, over to you North East and we’ll see you on 17th September.
JB Training 16th-18th of October, Near Leeds
This year’s JB Training, was again a great success. Ran by the JB Board, we had over 30 particiapants from all 6 Junior Branches of GB. It was a full weekend, with a theme of ‘How to Train Your JB Dragon’. Again it was great to see so many new faces to the annual JB Training weekend, and many also returning. We had a variety of sessions, with many focusing back to tools and knowledge to be able to better their Local JB’s and National Junior Branch. We also had some fun sessions ran by participants, as well as educational content sessionsto round up the year of Conflict and Resolution. We also held the annual LJR Training, which again went very well with all LJR’s attending. The success of JB Training has led the JB Board to move to a slightly larger campsite so that we can have more participants and parrallel sessions. We hope to see many of you there: 21st-23rd of October 2016 - save the date!
Some of the sessions ran at this year’s JB Training were:

NJB Weekends
Superheroes from across GB in years 7 and 8, met up for a weekend of fun and educational content activities. This year’s theme for educational content is sustainable development, so as the first GBJB weekend of the year, we made this our focus. Alongisde our activities, NJR Ollie came and ran the activity created by the JB Board on the UN Global Goals. 7/8 weekend had a really good turnout yet again this year. At the end of the weekend we left having learnt how to save the world and had made some great friends along the way.
9/10 Back in February, the 9/10 minicamp, hosted in Curley Hill, had participants aged 13 -15 turn up to enjoy a weekend full of time-travel and sustainable development themed activities. The 33 participants all enjoyed the weekend with particular highlights being a game of “smugglers” leading to an in depth discussion on the current refugee crisis which was enjoyed by all. As well as that Lara and Jon popped in and ran another sustainable development activity, the same ran at 7/8, which was a great hit. Overall all participants had a fun but educational weekend!
Information about 2017’s National Junior Branch Weekend’s will be coming very soon.
Vision for GB Vision for GB was brought to CISV Great Britain post the first ever Global Conference to share the knowledge learnt and put new plans and processes into practise for GB. The weekend was for all member of CISV Great Britain, and we had a few JB’ers attend alongside some members of the JB Board. It was fantastic to have such a diverse group of CISV GB members together working on a new vision for our National Association. This new vision was put into place under a Strategic Plan; going alongside the Strategic Plan set by CISV International. This is divided into four sections of Foundation, Impact, Profile and Resources. Post Vision for GB, a working group (Jess (NAR), Nic (GB Chair), Anna, Rhian, Lara, Loki and Raph) developed the goals of our National Strategic Goal, creating sub-goals and action points for our country. Now we are looking for more members to join this core group in carrying out the work set by the Strategic Plan. To find out more and get involved follow the links below! CISV Strategic Plan

32 Participants from 6 chapters and a fantastic leaders & staff group from this Summer’s PGB
Project GB
This year two PGB’s were hosted, one for the age group of 14-15 in the Winter and another for ages 12-14 in the Summer! Here is a round up of the Summer PGB, with a link to the full article written by the staff!
“Throughout the week the participants, who were aged between 12 and 14, took part in activities, planned and ran their own activities for the camp, played games, made friends and laughed a lot. On the Wednesday of our week-long camp, we took a walk through the woods to Ilkley Lido for the afternoon, where we met up with the Building Blocks Village that was taking place around the corner from us. We had a great afternoon pushing each other in the (freezing cold!) pool and doing giant 100-people energisers, which shocked the locals to say the least! On the Thursday, our final day of camp, we met Tom and Wahida. Tom is a member of the Leeds branch of Citizens UK and Wahida works for Faithful Neighbours, a charity based in Leeds and Bradford. These two organisations were our LMOs - Like-Minded Organisations - that we worked with to make our Project GB a Mosaic Project With Tom, we explored the power, or sometimes lack of power, that young people experience throughout their lives, and aimed to inspire them to recognise the ways in which they can use the power that they hold to make changes in their community. Our activity with Wahida focused on identity, and how sometimes our identity can hinder us in forming relationships with others. Faithful Neighbours focus on fostering relationships between young people from different backgrounds, and proving that despite having a different religious or racial identity, we can form meaningful relationships”.

Wild West Weekend Bounds Green, London, GB. Febraury 18th-21st 2016. 62 Participants, 5 Staff, 5 Faciliators
Wild West Weekend (WWW) is an International Junior Branch event for the JBs of the Wild West Neighbourhood, and a few extra international participants (The Wild West Neighbourhood consists of: France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Great Britain). This year, back in February, WWW was held in Great Britain, London to be more specific, and was attended by around 70 participants. WWW was a content based weekend focusing on Sustainability in all its forms, those being: social, ecological and economical. There were fascinating activities from the flooding of the Nile delta and its consequences for northern Africa to the sustainability of the milk market and the economic effect of milk prices, and many things in between. Each activity participants learnt about and tried to understand some of the issues facing sustainability in the world today and then had amazing discussions on all the issues articulating their opinions while taking in others and working towards forming an educating opinion which would help them develop ideas on how they could help change the situation.

How many GBJB Faces can you see?
It wasn’t all intense discussions though, a lot of fun was had in the practical parts of the sessions, in the playful evening sessions, and in meal and free time when participants could discuss anything they like from the session they had just attended to just getting to know the inspiring JBers they were surrounded by. Overall WWW 2016 was a great success and we can’t wait for it to be back, and the good news is that WWW will be coming back in 2017! WWW 2017 will be held in February by JB France in the city of Lyon. More information will be coming shortly but if you wish to attend just contact your NJRs and they will be happy to help you get there. Finally, GBJB would just like to thank everyone for making WWW a success. So thank to the EJB Team 2015-16, the home staff, the content staff, the participants and everyone else that made it possible! Next year Wild West Weekend will be hosted in France. Check the ‘Dates for your Diary’ page for more information about this weekend and follow Wild West Weekend on Facebook
EJBM & BEAM 23rd-28th March 2016, Berlin, Germany
This year a delegation of 5 went to EJBM & BEAM (hosted together for the first time!). The NJRs, Ollie and Lara, were joined by Sheela, Jon and Rob (sadly not pictured!) to take on a range of inspiring and motivating sessions that ranged from how to better our JB and goal set, through to personal ambitions and growth, as well as educational content. It was fantastic to share the experience with BEAM and our NAR, Jess, we had a few parrallel sessions and it was fantastic to bring JB and the NA’s together. We learnt invaluable things that will be put into GBJB from this Septembers NJBF! We also elected new EJB Team members and the location of EJBM 2017! BEAM: The Big Europe, Middle East and Africa Meeting between the National Assocation Representatives
This year at EJBM we elected Farida, and only yesterday (1st of Sept) we elected Mia (DEN) as the new members of the EJB Team - Congratulations!

Sheela, Participant from GB at EJBM & BEAM 2016:
“Attending EJBEAM this year taught me a lot about how CISV works on much larger scale than I had previously known and it allowed me to explore areas of sustainable development I hadn’t before. And just like everything in CISV, it was amazing meeting people from such different backgrounds”.
Ollie, NJR Participating from GB at EJBM & BEAM 2016:
“Having EJBM and BEAM together for the first time was a great step towards the integration of JB and the rest of CISV. We got to see and learn how each other worked and what each other did, it also gave us the opportunity to sit down together and plan how we can work together to reach CISVs mission and Vision.

IJBC International Junior Branch Conference, Medellin, Colombia, August 2016 3 Particiapants, 1 Facilitator.
This year IJBC was brought the Americas Region, hosted in Colombia. We were fortunate enough to have a delegation of 4 GBJB’eres. Your two NJR’s Lara and Ollie, as well as Andrew and Rhian. The conference lasted 6 days, exploring three treads of Innovación, Participación and Conexión. They survived the heat of Medellin and learnt a lot to bring back to GBJB.
IJBC brought together all 3 regions, EJB (Europe, Middle East & Africe), AJB (The Americas; Northern, Central and Southern) and APJB (The Asia Pacific Region). To find out what other regions are up to, you can check out and ‘Like!’ their Facebook Pages here:

IJBC Threads:
Innovación, Participación and Conexión. The ‘Conexión’ thread made us as participants look at how we connect with other individuals within and outside of CISV. With sessions that also looked at how we remain engaged as volunteers within our organisation. The ‘Participación’ thread focused on what makes Junior Branch exciting and how motivate our activities and content to be true active global citizens.

“This was my first IJBC, it was fantastic to be surrounded around some of the most motivated JB’ers of the world. It gave great opportunities to discuss the organisation, how to improve, and what we can do in the future with JB. I also gained a lot of fresh ideas and experiences to bring back to our JB weekends here in GB!”

JB Board
What have we been working on during the past 12 months...?
The JB Board of 2016-17 at NJBF 2015
The JB Board has been (not to brag or anything!) very hard at work again this year. The new board of 2015-16 set out to complete the goals of the previous year and continue to focus on our communications methods, our mosaic work and educational content. Whilst some of these goals will continue into the next board, this board can say that it has ticked off quite a few markers in the way to achieving them. Alongside the already aligned goals, we spent a lot of time evaluating the past years during this term and have brought ourselves up to speed with how this Junior Branch board can work to better JB. Alongisde hosting WWW, taking on the PGB Committee, running to host EJBM & BEAM, this JB Board has spent time on our financial systems, something that needed a lot of work - and this can be much credited to our fantastic Treasurer, Kris. And we have also put a few new exciting projects into the pipline for the coming year get excited!

The New JB Board Role Profiles With the Treasurer offically becoming a full member of the JB Board, we took the time to work out exactly what being a ‘Board Member’ entails. This led us to review the JB Board Role Profiles we had in place. The JB Board has grown and diversified since the last time these profiles were created, so this year we have adapted them to fit our needs of today. This also included a new focus on fundraising. This is something we found the JB Board had not been commiting enough time too, therefore the Events Coordinator becoming the Events & Fundraising Coordinator. These new role profiles will be voted on at NJBF.

Local Junior Representatives round up the year in their branches...
Sheffield
Sheffield JB has been very busy this year, with our minicamp, socials, LMO collaboration and new merch. We began with our annual minicamp, which this year was a Disney themed weekend with visitors from 3 of the other GB chapters! We also had a Christmas bowling social, followed by a visit from the refugee charity ASSIST who ran a workshop for our JBers and some fabulous new jumpers! Sheffield also worked with other branches, creating activities with the North East and showing its presence at national and international JB events like NJBF, NJB day, JB Training, Wild West and EJBM.
North East
“This year NE junior branch has continued to thrive, with 30 plus people turning up to each junior branch. We have also had representatives at all of the national minicamps held this year, including being the branch with the most representatives at junior branch training. Throughout the year we have held regular junior branches, and held a Christmas party and even a clubersize fundraiser which was thoroughly enjoyed by all!”
Hull
“This year the Hull and Easy riding chapter did several small fundraising task such as plant sales, tom-bola, summer fairs and also a bag pack, the bag pack had a good turnout and raised about £200. Also the plant sale raised about £500. The annual summer BBQ was a hit with around 30 people coming, and generally all families. Another popular social this year was the Christmas bowling party which we do as a fun session every year. We think this helps more people become interested in JB if we have the odd session that is different. On the other hand Hull’s turnout for JB is not always the best, meaning there is only really a small group of about 8-12 most meetings, for this year attendance should be a key goal for Hull.”
London “This year CISV London has had three minicamps. The minicamps are filled with a range of activities. At the minicamps their were chances for the JBers to plan activities, a JB discussion and activities planned by LJRs and staff. The minicamps are always fun, enjoyable yet educational. We have had two socials, which give are a time for JBers to interact socially and often include games. These usually have a large turnout and are extremely successful. The fundraiser we had was the viewing of the documentary “I am 11”. We showed it for 3 nights and people, not just from CISV, payed to see it. We raised just under £700 and it also brought more families with CISV interests to us.”
Manchester
It’s been a successful year for Manchester JB, we’ve had good attendance from age raging from 11 to 18, the age group most represented was year 6 to year 9. We are try to recruit more and more people to fill the whole age range. Fundraising this year was successful, to raise funds we all went out for a meal at a Greek restaurant that was for children and parents over 20 attended. We have also had a quiz night volunteers made chilly for us to eat along with beverages and a fantastic quiz and a raffle the evening was very enjoyable, we had 30+ people who came to enjoy the night and raise money. Over all Manchester JB has had a successful year.
Leeds
Leeds Junior Branch has taken a real uplift in participation this year, as nearly all of 2015 village participants have stayed involved. We have made a move towards a 16+ planning group for JB activities - including some involvement in the organisation and running of our upcoming BBQ/Feedback Evening. The JB has made a real effort to work within the theme of Sustainable Development, such as a month of recycling, in which we collected materials to use for several JB activities. On the whole, CISV Leeds has had an extremely fun and productive year, and we look forward to the next one ahead - with our 2 new LJR's, Max and Joanna.
