GBJB
Great Britain Junior Branch
2014-2015 Magazine
Hello GBJBers,
As GBJB grows another year older, the time has come to reflect on the previous 12 months. The purpose of this document is to do just that. It has been standard practice for NJR’s of past to give a year report at the AGM. As a board, we think this magazine will help with sharing the information to JBers, as each chapter has received one copy and the document is published online. Additionally, we are trying to cut down our AGM’s (after last years mega-AGM) and this assists in doing so! It has been an absolute pleasure to work on the JB board over the past year. It is apparent we have a huge number of dedicated and hard working JBers here in GB. The Board are very grateful to those of you who we have encountered, you have made our job infinitely easier. As a board, we can leave our posts optimistic for GBJB in the coming years. We would like to extend good luck to next years board and a thank you for everyone’s support.

We played host to 30 participants at the last NJBF. The schedule was filled with sessions by candidates for the board, chapter development, feedback from IJBC and RTF and decision making. An exciting development of NJBF was the introduction of the Tea Committee which has worked on task forces over the year (see page … for more). After a record breaking AGM, last years board left Freya with a new set of faces and a lifetime’s supply of tea. These faces were Ollie, Lara, Rhian and Tom. 7/8 Weekend 7⅞ /8 was really in a league of its own this year, with a sport theme and some funfilled activities. The weekend took place last January in Ilkley. Rhian and Tom were fortunate enough to visit the weekend to check in and run a session on street art as a means of tackling conflict.

Maybe we shouldn’t talk about what happened at this weekend because “ignorance is bliss”. Actually that was the theme for this weekend. It may or may not have occurred in March in the lovely Ilkley. Overall a successful weekend where participants delved deep into the realms of conflict resolution for a truly content-filled weekend.
9/10 Weekend Participants took a trip to Neverland for 9/10 last February. The staff planned plenty of educational and fun sessions for the participants. Freya and Lara dropped by and ran the same session on conflict & street art. Overall a very successful weekend.
Wild West Weekend’15 Wild West Weekend 2015, Hosted in Luxembourg, February 19th-21st 2015
Our region of European, Middle East and African Junior Branch is divided into four neighbourhoods, Central Eastern Europe, Northern, Mediterranean and where GB lies - the Wild West Neighbourhood. Every year since 2010, our neighbourhood has held a Wild West Weekend, where participants from each country in our neighbourhood (and sometimes other international countries) gather together to strengthen and build relationships within our neighbourhood, working towards JB’s goals, delivering training and the usual CISV style fun. This year Wild West Weekend was hosted in Luxembourg, with assistance from France. The group was over 60 people, including a staff team of 6 home staff and 4 facilitators; including the JB Board’s very own Rhian and Lara and four participants from GB. WWW’15 explored this years theme of Conflict and Resolution. The first activity from this year’s team on Stand Up was ran with great success. Participants could also sign up to run activities and three groups did so. They covered topics including Freedom and Society and sparked debate amongst the group. Other sessions ran at the weekend dealt with the conflicting issue of access to information and the media. We also did a session called Why are We Here; which was exploring our involvement in CISV.

The next Wild West Weekend will be hosted by Great Britain in London. It will be from the 18th -21st of February and we hope to have as many faces from GB as possible, so keep an eye out for more information on our Facebook page - Great Britain JB Board and Wild West Weekend’s page. We are also looking for Home Staff until the 13th of Septermeber 2015 - find the application form online.

EJBM’15 European, Middle East and Africa Junior Branch Meeting: Hosted in Lisbon, Portugal, 1st-6th April 2015
EJBM is the European, Middle East and Africa Junior Branch Meeting, which is held once every year and ran by the EJB Team (European, Middle East and Africa Junior Branch Team). EJBM is a 6 day meeting that ran this year in sunny Lisbon, Portugal.
What happens at EJBM? Sessions are ran for the most part by the EJB Team, but also sessions were ran by one of the IJR’s (International Junior Representative) Anjo, a member of the Governing Board; Soli and the ‘3 Musketeers’ (3 people who had be elected to facilitate a thread of sessions, including our very own Freya Caudwell!) Here is a selection of sessions: -Strengthening the Connection -EJB Moves Forward -Meet Me Pathway -Mission & Vision Statements -Conflict & Resolution Sessions -Neighbourhood Time
EJBM Sessions EJBM this year ran through the theme of the 3 C’s: Content, Connection and Contribution.
Motions at EJBM
Changing our name from the European Junior Branch, to the European, Middle East and Africa Junior Branch, to be more inclusive of the countries within EJB. The acronym of EJB will remain as easy to say and recognisable!
Each year motions are put forward to change. All motions were proposed prior to EJBM and discussed in depth during the meeting. All motions passed and here they are: Changing our voting system - To adapt our way of voting to be a ranked and programmed system. This was proposed to save time as the old method was very time consuming, as time is very limited and precious at EJBM! This practise is already used by CISV International for electing the Governing Board.
To hold EJBM and the National Representatives meeting of the EMEA region (BEAM) simultaneously in the same location. This was proposed to strengthen relationships across NA’s (National Associsations). Due to an amendment the collaboration of EJBM and BEAM is on a trial year basis.
Motion A proposed change to the constitution. to pass a motion it must be voted on by the voting members - in this case of EJB.
EJBM is also the time for electing the new EJB Team! This year Gaspard and Ola stepped down, leaving space for two new faces to join Marvin and Roxane in their second year. These faces were Andrew Elder (GBR) and Pipa Raimundo (POR)!

Global Conference & IJBC’15 Global Conference and International Junior Branch Conference: Hosted in Oslo, Norway, 4th-9th of August 2015
This year IJBC was hosted in parallel with the Global Conference in Norway. This allowed for participants of either event to dive into the others sessions and we also had a lot of common sessions. GBJB sent Freya, Ollie and Andrew to IJBC. Rhian, also a JBer, was lucky enough to attend the Global Conference.
IJBC
This years IJBC had sessions based around the themes: Link, Learn and Look ahead. There was a big focus on how JB achieves it’s goals and the broader goals of CISV. The sessions were intense and super-motivating, there’s nothing like being in a room with some of the most active JBers in the world. News of IJBC

IJR’s 2015-2016
At IJBC the International Junior Representatives (IJR’s) are elected. This year Gaspard Simon (FRA) was elected for the two year term. Alongside this Dow Linnell (CAN), as last year (2014-2016) alternate, stepped in as Senior IJR. Congratulations to Gaspard and Dow, it looks to be an exciting year and a huge Thank you to last year’s IJR’s Anjo and Hana for their hardwork!
GloCo As for GloCo, there were a huge number of sessions as most were run in parallel. This made it difficult to decide what to attend, how do you choose between becoming a PDPEF whizz or a smooth talker when it comes to explaining CISV? All the sessions we attended gave us a deeper understanding of the organisation and how we can help to improve it.

‘Fighting for Peace’ Project GB: Year 7/8 Summer 2015, August 14th-21st All chapters represented across 5 delgeations. 30 participants, 5 leaders and 4 staff.
Project GB
Summer Project GB was a Mosaic Project for participants in years 7 and 8. This year the theme was Fighting for Peace, linking with this years overall theme - Conflict and Resolution. Throughout the week our participant planned session around the theme as well as attending session planned by Leaders, Big Sibs and Staff. As part of the mosaic we work with a Like-Minded Organisation; Leeds Development Education Centre (Leeds DEC). They spent a day with our group and ran numerous sessions about local conflicts and different styles of resolutions. With over 25 participants every chapter was represented. We would like to thank the Project GB committee for all their work as well as the Staff Team, Leaders, Big Sibs and Kitchen staff.
LJR: Branch Updates
London
“It’s been another great year for London! Out regular JB meetings gathered around 20-40 people from a variety of ages. We gave free hugs for PoD in Trafalgar Square, hosted NJB Day, sent participants to JB training and Year 9/10 weekend, as well as running 2 minicamps ourselves. For fundraising we had a Cookie-a-thon which raised over £100! We have also taken part in GB’s first ever chapter-based Mosaic, partnering with Destitute Asylum Seekers.”
Manchester
“JB meetings had an average participantion of 18 sometimes with peaks of 30! Lots attened 7/8, 9/10, JB Training and NJB Day! They hosted a fundrasining back pack which was very successful! They made new merchandise; a sweatshirt and pillowcase - both very popular inside and outside of the chapter! They had social junior branch events including a movie night, picnic and playing laser quest! The new LJRs are Amy Irving and Dougie Pitman!”
Hull
“This year Hull’s Junior Branch has improved quite considerably, numbers have continued to grow to average between 15-20 people at JB. All have enjoyed Junior Branch meetings! We have had fundraising with 3 bag packs, numerous car boot sales, plant sales and many other things. Hull have sent people to all National Events and look forward to hosting NJB in September. The new LJRs are George Richards and Dan Allday.”
North East
“North East have had another great year, continuing with fantastic turnouts at JB, with approximatley 35+ as an average turnout. We have also increased their participants at National Events, particularly at 7/8, 9/10 and NJBF. Educational content has increased at JB and we have a great Junior Committee running and planning JB. We have postponed our Italian Night Fundraiser, which is coming soon and we have held a minicamp early in the year. Next year’s Junior LJR is Alice Ritchie!”
Leeds
“A fantastic year in Leeds, with two bag packs raising over £1000 at one alone and a social BBQ fundraiser too! We have created new t-shirts, which sold really well and have had an average participation at JB of around 20. We have increased the educational content, including it at most JB meetings! We have always had good turn out at national events including JB Training, 7/8, 9/10 and 17+! Our new LJRs are Callum Elson and Laura Bewsher.”
Sheffield
“We have had more education content at JB including good debriefs! Held a minicamp in November and another will be coming soon. Both JB and the minicamp have had great turnouts. We have had a few fundraisers this year; Pea and Pie Night and a Garden Party! Both raised a lot of money for the branch and helped with the running of the Sheffield village this year. We have created new TShirt! Sheela Steele will become the Junior LJR alongside Max Croft! Miles Edwards Wright is the new Treasurer (formerly called LJC)!”
The JB Board: 2014-15 The JB Board have been busy bees this year, ensuring GBJB is running smoothly. Here’s just a few things that have kept us occupied...
Board Meet-Ups
This year the board have been lucky enough to meet up twice to crack on with work. Once for a weekend in November and another in June. These were both incredibly productive weekends. We covered all things GBJB, from Wild West Weekend to the GBJB year goals. During the first meeting we were lucky enough to participate in a Newcastle JB event. At the second we attended the June National council meeting and had a skype with our Wild West coordinator, Marvin.

Tea Committee The Tea Committee was set up this year to help facilitate the running of taskforces in GBJB. A member of the committee was assigned to each taskforce in GBJB and their job was to provide the support needed for the taskforce to work towards their goals. Usually it meant giving taskforces a nudge to get on with things but sometimes more support was needed. This was the first year the Tea-Comm has been set up and as a board we are happy with the progress made. We have a few thoughts on how to improve the committee over the next year and are very optimistic for this committee's future.
