25 years oF rock Stepping onto the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame plaza, you are greeted by sounds & sights that will get you ready for a music experience like no other. In the summer, live bands turn that plaza into a bustling music festival scene just about every day. During cooler months, outdoor speakers broadcast an all-star soundtrack meant to keep the chill at bay. Walk through the lobby doors, and you’ll hear everything from greatest hits to deep cuts as you journey up and around the museum. Plastered on the walls are larger-than-life red, black, and white vintage images of live & loud performances. All around these scenes are nooks and crannies filled with cool artifacts— iconic gear, memorable stage costumes, song lyrics, tour passes, and even a CBGB awning—as well as seatshaking, concert-like experiences highlighting induction performances and The Garage, which lets visitors make glorious noise on real instruments.

The sun-filled atrium gives way to over 55,000 square feet of exhibition space stretched over seven levels. Such a rock & roll museum deserves a star-studded groundbreaking: On June 7, 1993, the Who’s Pete Townshend, Chuck Berry, Billy Joel, Sam Phillips, and Ruth Brown (to name a few) attended a ceremony that kicked off construction in Cleveland. One year later, rock & roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis performed when the building was topped off with the placement of one last steel beam. From the moment we opened our doors through to this very day, one tune hasn’t changed - when you visit, you’ve found your people: a community of music fanatics ready to soak up every morsel of info about their favorite artists. Appropriately, rock & roll is in your face—and ears—throughout your entire tour.

Opening 25 years ago, this 150,000-square-foot music monument has a glass-enclosed pyramid adjacent to a 162-foot tower, both of which soar above the shores of Lake Erie. In a nod to how we’re the home of America’s great art form—rock & roll— world renown architect, the late I.M. Pei modeled our pyramid after the iconic glass structure he designed for the Louvre in France.

Check In at The Flats

T

he area near downtown better known as “The Flats” has been an integral part of the city’s history since its very beginning and continues to be a nerve center of activity and development today. In 1796, the city’s founder, Moses Cleaveland and his survey party landed on this area that borders both sides of the Cuyahoga River at the Lake Erie shore front on the north side of downtown. The Flats was home to Cleveland’s industrial district and steel mills that located there to capitalize on the Great Lakes shipping routes until the 1970’s. With the demise of the steel industry, many of the abandoned warehouses were renovated and The Flats became a hub of nightclubs and various entertainment destinations in the 1980’s and 1990’s. At its peak in the early 1990’s, The Flats were home to the highest concentration of bars in the Midwest. After a period of quiet since the mid 90’s the Flats is now being redeveloped and features some of downtown Cleveland’s most exciting entertainment options.

The FirstEnergy Powerhouse, a former power station located between the Jacobs Pavilion and the Nautica Queen base, has been transformed to host a few major local attractions and restaurants. It is home to the Greater Cleveland Aquarium, the Nautica Café, and Windows on the River and all together these three destinations provide a fun family adventure in one location. This area has recently been named the Nautica Entertainment District. There are numerous restaurants and nightclubs located here that offer many excellent entertainment and dining options. Many of the best and most memorable skyline shots of downtown Cleveland have been taken from the West Bank. For more information on the Flats West Bank please visit: thisiscleveland.com

Flats East Bank

The Flats is divided into two distinctive areas occupying both sides of the Cuyahoga River: The East and West Banks. The East Bank is closest to downtown and is quickly becoming a business and lifestyle landmark. Located between the western edge of the Warehouse District along W. 10th St and the Cuyahoga River the Flats East Bank features new hotels, several restaurants, residential living and a 1,000-foot long boardwalk along the banks of the Cuyahoga River. Exciting destinations such as The Big Bang Dueling Piano Bar have recently chosen to locate in this neighborhood. The restaurants and entertainment facilities here in this area are upscale, modern and offer the local flavors and personality of Cleveland’s nationally recognized and rapidly growing foodie scene. Rivergate Park was developed by the Cleveland Rowing Foundation to accommodate canoeing, kayaking and dragon boating and also calls the Flats East Bank home. This fabulous park provides an excellent opportunity to experience great views of the city while relaxing in one of the city’s most historic areas. The Crooked River Skate Park is located in Rivergate Park as well. This state of the art course is open year round and in all types of weather. Cru Uncorked: The Ultimate French Experience

N

estled in Cleveland’s east side neighborhood of Moreland Hills is one of the finest dining destinations, not only in Cleveland but the entire United States. Cru Uncorked is a fine French Dining restaurant that has been created with attention to absolutely every possible detail. From the marble used in the entrance fountain to the wine cellar, only the absolute finest ingredients and materials have been used. The slate roof, the soundproofing throughout the venue, the very carefully sourced ingredients, the thorough wine and champagne selections and the décor are authentic and original. The team at Cru has gone to extensive lengths to create an authentic French château that serves the finest French cuisine to their valued guests in the most comfortable atmosphere possible.

A Restaurant Designed to Enhance Their Guests’ Comfort The restaurant features a traditional French entry, three fireplaces, doors and curtains to enclose dining areas to eliminate outdoor noise, individually pin lighted tables, custom designed chairs and tables…the list of details is extensive and it is all designed for the comfort of their guests in mind. Cru Uncorked wants to encourage guests to settle in and feel free to stay a while. The dining room is divided into several separate sections, each hosting 5 to 7 tables each. The Cru Uncorked Menu Features An Authentic French Menu and Ingredients Executive Head Chef John Stropki has developed an authentic and accessible menu featuring the absolute best French cuisine. The menu at Cru changes quarterly keeping all dishes seasonal and fresh.

56

On our recent visit we experienced several dishes being prepared and were deeply impressed with the thought, care and detail that went into every plate. You must try the famous Seared Foie Gras Preparation as it was recently named “Best of Cleveland,” by Cleveland Magazine. The entrées at Cru are “Fully Plated” and dressed, meaning that when you order an entrée they’ll come complete with veggies and sides. No need to order a la carte. Cru sources produce from local farms and all menu items are made from scratch. None of their food is frozen. None of their food contains MSG and they only use the finest cooking oils to ensure the best flavor and that the meal will be the healthiest it can be.

Cru Uncorked Has A Comprehensive Wine and Champagne List Chris Oppewall, president of Cru Uncorked, is in charge of the wine selection as well as training the staff to learn and appreciate the nuances of all wine to ensure they can be the best resource for you possible. The wine focus at Cru Uncorked is certainly French, and their selection is extensive. However, they also feature the best wines from other parts of the world including California, Italian, Spanish, Australia and other parts of the Southern Hemisphere. Cru has created a wine selection from which there are no bad choices. Cru also hosts fabulous and educational Wine Dinners, tastings, instructional speakers and many other wine centered events throughout the year. As the team had planned, a visit to Cru Uncorked is a complete experience and true adventure in dining, not to mention a great way to immerse yourself in French culture.

WINE WITH DINNER W

e came up with a few quick wine pairing tips for you to consider as you contemplate your dinner destination. We’re sure you’ll find the perfect restaurant and hopefully these tips will make your meal a little more enjoyable. The Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse has several location throughout the Cleveland area and each one regularly features excellent wines and vineyards to help you expand your palette. Cru Uncorked is well known for their extensive and approachable wine list. They have been developing one of the best wine programs in the country and are often recognized for this alone. Fine dining at Pier W in Lakewood, Blue Point Grill downtown and Crop Bistro in Ohio City can all be accentuated with exceptional wine selections and knowledgeable service. They all take their wine as seriously as they do their excellent menus. Morton’s, The Steakhouse and Delmonico’s also feature wine lists that compliment their menu. The overall goal is to balance your wine with the food you’re eating. Give some thought as to whether your meal will be creamy, acidic, fatty, lean, mild or flavorful. Mild wines do well with mild food, big flavorful meals match well with big flavorful wines and acidic foods do best when paired with acidic wines. Acidic wines and creamy dishes do not mix well and spicy dishes can completely overpower some wines. Many times wines and foods go best together that grew up together. If you’re eating an Italian dinner you may consider an Italian wine, for example. Wine tannins are an important factor as well and originate in grape skins, seeds and the barrels the wines are aged in. Their astringent flavor strips the taste of fat off of your tongue leading to a refreshing meal. Some studies suggest that tannins

60

may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. White wines typically have less tannins than red wines as red wines are aged with the grape skins and pips while white wines are not. We’ve identified five categories of wine pairing to introduce you to the concept if you’re not yet familiar. Have fun and Bon Appetit!! Body This is a delicate balance of the “weight” of your wine and your desired dish. The body of each should match. Pair a rich, oaky California chardonnay with a rich buttery pasta and a lighter French Chablis with pasta cooked in a light wine based sauce. The wines and pasta complement each other rather than one overpowering the other. Acidity Tangy foods can make wine taste flat. When eating dishes with vinegar and/or citrus based sauces try to pair with a wine of equal acidity. White wines made from grapes grown in California, northern Italy or France will usually do the trick. Texture Tannic wines go much better with fatty dishes as the tannins and the fat contrast with each other. The buttery texture of fats act as a tannin nullifier, alleviating the drying sensation of tannic wines while the tannins break down the richness of the fat. Tannic red wines pair well with any fatty meat, not exclusively red meats. They will also go better with a ribeye than a filet, due to the fat content of the ribeye. Sweet & Spicy A sweeter wine can take away some of the heat of a spicy dish. Sweeter wines are sometimes lower in alcohol which also helps offset spicy flavors. A high alcohol wine will enhance the spicy flavors instead of balancing them out.

Celebrating The Game!

leveland is home to three professional sports franchises: The Cleveland Browns (NFL), Cleveland Indians (MLB) and Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA). The Lake Erie Monsters represent Cleveland in the American Hockey League while the Cleveland Gladiators are members of the Arena Football League. Needless to say, Cleveland is a booming sports town! Between all of these teams, there are games scheduled all year long and chances are you’ll find at least one of these teams playing at home during your visit.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Cleveland Browns

The Cavaliers have undergone several personnel changes recently. Most notably the Lebron James move to the La Lakers after leading the 2016 team as they brought home Cleveland’s first NBA title in the team’s history! The Cavs won a 7 game series against the Golden State Warriors after coming back from a 3-1 deficit. The only time the feat has been achieved in NBA history! LeBron has moved on to play with the Lakers, but the Cavs still thrill Clevelanders with exciting play. The Cleveland Cavaliers joined the NBA as an expansion team in 1970 and have made 20 playoff appearances in their nearly 50 year history. From 1986-1995 the team made eight playoff appearances behind free throw sharp shooter Mark Price and Brad Daugherty. The Cavs play in Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, which was host to the NBA All Star game in 1997 and is located in downtown Cleveland. For ticketing and more information visit: clevelandcavaliers.com

The Cleveland Browns are four time NFL Champions, most recently in 1964. Their most recent playoff appearance was in 2002 when they lost two of their rivals to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 2018 team had a record of 7-8-1 to finish 3rd in the AFC North division. The noted improvement in performance over recent seasons has their fans looking forward to a potentially exciting 2019 season. The team is named for their legendary first coach, Paul Brown. Brown led the franchise to a championship in its first year in the NFL, in 1950, and twice more in the same decade, in 1954 and 1955. The Browns won another title in 1964. In an un-scientific study, BizJournal named the Browns fans the most loyal in all sports, citing attendance numbers versus weather, climate and team record. A testament to their faith, an organization for Browns fans, Browns Backers Worldwide and its more then 100,000 members, is considered the largest sports fan organization in the United States. The Browns franchise has the fourth most players elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Among those are Otto Graham, Paul Brown, Jim Brown and Ozzie Newsome. The Browns play eight home games a year in First Energy Stadium at the North Coast Harbor near the Great Lakes Science Center and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum. For ticketing and more information visit: clevelandbrowns.com

Cleveland Indians In 2017 the Indians set an American League and Major League Baseball record by winning 22 consecutive games with no ties. 2016 was also an exciting year for the Indians as they made their fifth appearance in the World Series! They ended up losing the series to the Chicago Cubs after seven exciting games but certainly set the stage for high expectations for further years. The Cleveland Indians are two time World Series Champions having won the series in 1920 and 1948. They made appearances in the fall classic in 1995 and 1997 in addition to their 2016 run. To this day, the Indians own the most American League Central Division Championships with eight! For ticketing and more information visit: cleveland.indians.mlb.com

The Cleveland Orchestra

pend an evening with The Cleveland Orchestra — and create music memories for a lifetime. Called “America’s best” by The New York Times and “one of the most amazing classical orchestras in the world” by the Los Angeles Times, this ensemble of gifted musicians, led by acclaimed music director Franz WelserMöst, begins a second century of musical excellence at the top of its game. The promise of remarkable concert experiences, esteemed artistry, and engaging music education programs offers audience members access to the finest symphonic entertainment anywhere.

The Cleveland Orchestra is renowned for subtlety and detail in its performances, creating an intimacy with music for audiences during annual tours and concert seasons at home — in Cleveland’s grand Severance Hall and each summer under the stars at Blossom Music Center. The Orchestra remains a vital part of the reinvention of this family-friendly city, attracting graduates from the world’s best conservatories. “The musicians of The Cleveland Orchestra take great pride in providing artistic excellence at the highest possible level,” says horn player Jesse McCormick, who joined the Orchestra in 2006. “That’s a torch I’m honored to carry.” Since its inception in 1918, The Cleveland Orchestra has been guided by a set of core principles created to foster an uncompromising focus on musical brilliance, an unwavering commitment to community engagement, and a steadfast belief that classical music inspires and enriches the lives of future generations. Building on more than a century of exciting education initiatives, the Orchestra has a number of innovative programs designed to spark a lifelong love of music in young people, including Under 18s Free, which allows patrons ages 17 and under to receive free admission to performances with each regular-priced adult ticket.

72

Cleveland Orchestra concerts are offered in a variety of formats for a variety of audiences — including casual Friday night events, film scores performed live by the Orchestra, collaborations with pop and jazz singers, ballet and opera presentations, and standard repertoire contrasted with new and older works. For the past thirty seasons, the Orchestra has also played a free community concert in downtown Cleveland around the Fourth of July. Mr. Welser-Möst’s creative vision continues to provide the Orchestra with unequaled opportunities for exploring music as a universal language of communication and understanding. Today, The Cleveland Orchestra remains deeply committed to engaging people of all ages through the power and passion of music, inspiring audience members in concert halls and classrooms throughout Northeast Ohio — and around the world. As generations of Clevelanders celebrate many of life’s most important moments with the music of this extraordinary ensemble, the Orchestra continues raising the bar on artistic excellence as one of the most admired orchestras in the world. Severance Hall

elebrated as one of the most magnificent concert venues in the world, Severance Hall has been home to The Cleveland Orchestra since its opening in 1931. According to a Cleveland newspaper editorial printed shortly after the first concert: “We believe that Mr. Severance intended to build a temple to music, and not a temple to wealth; and we believe it is his intention that all music lovers should be welcome there.” In the decades that followed, the Orchestra’s warm and welcoming hometown hall has become a bucket-list destination for music lovers and architecture aficionados alike. The Orchestra chose to build its concert hall in the heart of Cleveland’s University Circle area — a picturesque setting on the city’s east side that serves as an epicenter of major cultural, education, and medical institutions, including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Institute of Music, and what is today Case Western Reserve University. Most of the funds needed to erect this majestic structure were donated by local businessman John L. Severance, president of the Musical Arts Association (1921-36), and his wife, Elisabeth. Designed by the Cleveland firm Walker & Weeks, Severance Hall’s elegant Georgian exterior was crafted to complement the classical architecture of other notable buildings in the neighborhood. The interior of Severance Hall features a combination of styles, including Art Deco, Egyptian Revival, Neoclassical, and Modernism. In addition, the hall contains a massive Skinner pipe organ and a reflective stage that provides honest and clear acoustics — a stage on which legendary performers such as Béla Bartók, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Leonard Bernstein once stood. From the beginning, Severance Hall has been instrumental in shaping the Orchestra’s much-admired sound — allowing the

ensemble to rehearse and perform in a consistent and idyllic acoustic environment. In the wake of a restoration project that was completed in 2000, the hall continues to play a major role in refining the Orchestra’s chamber-like sound under renowned music director Franz Welser-Möst. Said The New York Times, “The renovated concert hall sounds as seductive as it looks.” Among the first concert facilities built with radio capability, Severance Hall helped usher The Cleveland Orchestra into living rooms across the country through weekly broadcasts. Of course, even the most memorable broadcast lacks the visual splendor that comes with actually visiting Severance Hall — from its glimmering ceiling, “like frosting on a wedding cake,” to its two-dozen red jasper marble columns imported from Italy to its brass torchères bearing the hall’s familiar lotus blossom design, a nod to Elisabeth Severance’s favorite flower, nothing compares to experiencing this stunning landmark in person. Free tours are available to the public across each season and more than a hundred times a year, the acclaimed Cleveland Orchestra delivers on Mr. Severance’s vision by filling his concert hall with glorious music.
