Moerlein Lager House named “Ohio Brewery of the Year” by New York International Beer Competition
Bier: A Cincy Tradition
or nearly 100 years leading up to Prohibition, beer was a leading export and the breweries themselves were a major employer of Cincinnati. Although the Queen City had previously been infamous for being the center of pork production in the US, beer eventually took the lead in driving Cincinnati’s economy. By 1890, Cincinnati was the 3rd largest beer producer in the country. Several German breweries located in Over-the-Rhine produced this beer. Over-the-Rhine is a 360-acre neighborhood located just north of downtown Cincinnati. This neighborhood was the landing spot for most immigrants making their way to Cincinnati, including the Germans, who brought with them a serious work ethic, a strong cultural identity and a thirst for bier. (traditional German spelling). At one time, Over-the-Rhine was home to more than 15 breweries. A few of these elaborate structures still stand today. In fact, some lagering tunnels and underground storage facilities that ran underground and connected many buildings and facilities are still being rediscovered today. The many saloons that operated during this period were the nerve center of social life for many of the residents of Overthe-Rhine. They were also the target of several temperance movements and caused a considerable amount of political unrest in the area. With the onset of Prohibition in 1919, the many breweries in the region were shut down. A few were able to reopen in 1933 but, changes in the marketplace made it difficult for them to operate for long. Many bigger operations such as Anheuser-Busch and Miller had changed the game. A few Cincinnati beer names you may recognize include: Hudepohl, Christian Moerlein, Burger, Schoenling and Little Kings. Many of these beers are once again being brewed for a new generation of fans. The legendary Christian Moerlein brand was reintroduced in 1981 and led the way for the local craft beer movement. It soon became the first brand to pass the high standards of the
10
Reinheitsgebot Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. Their beer still contains only four ingredients: Malted Barley, Hops, Water and Yeast just as it did when Christian Moerlein was the brew master. Since 2004 Christian Moerlein has been under the ever-watchful guidance of beer baron Greg Hardman, who purchased the brand in 2004. Greg’s continued commitment to beer excellence makes Christian Moerlein a better beer. The Moerlein Lager House and Christian Moerlein Brewing Co. were awarded “Ohio Brewery of the Year” by the prestigious New York International Beer Competition over the last two years and earned top commendations for its beers. In 2019, Moerlein Lager House won Gold for its Smoked Marzen, Bronze for Barbarossa Dunkel Lager, and Bronze for its Golden Helles. Christian Moerlein Brewing Co. also won Gold for its Emancipator Doppelbock. The Moerlein Lager House and Christian Moerlein Brewing Co. competed against more than 600 breweries from the United States and 14 countries. At the Moerlein Lager House, located across the street from Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati’s colorful beer brewing history comes to life and continues to introduce a new generation of craft beer lovers to time tested traditions. This world-class brewpub features German inspired dishes as well as their freshly brewed, award-winning Christian Moerlein beer on site. The Reds: A Legacy of Champions
The Cincinnati Reds have been thrilling fans in the Queen City and the surrounding area since 1869. The Reds (originally known as the Red Stockings) were the first organized club in major league history! The Club has a very colorful history spanning the length of their existence. From the “Black Sox” scandal of the 1919 World Series to the glory years of the Big Red Machine, the Wire to Wire team that won the 1990 World Series up to their current Manager Jim Riggleman the Reds have been an integral part of Major League Baseball. Many of baseball’s greatest players were members of the Cincinnati Reds. Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Dave Concepcion, Tony Perez, Barry Larkin, Tom Seaver, Frank Robinson, Ken Griffey Jr & Sr, Tom Browning, Vada Pinson, Jose Rijo, Paul O’ Neil, Aaron Boone, Joey Votta, Jay bruce and a long list of others played for Cincinnati. After playing at Crosley Field for 58 years the team moved to Riverfront Stadium (which they shared with the Cincinnati Bengals) in 1970 and have been playing at Great American Ball Park since 2003. Cincinnati has been host to the All Star Game in 1938, 1953, 1970, 1988 and most recently in 2015.
20
After the Reds had a disappointing loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2013 National League Wild Card game, the team fired then manager Dusty Baker and have spent the past several seasons rebuilding. Under the continued leadership and champion level play of Joey Votto and Jose Peraza along with a strong pitching staff, The Reds hope to be a playoff contender in 2020. The baseball tradition runs deep here in Cincinnati. The fans throughout the area are very loyal and the team draws consistently-high attendance for home games. The city’s personality, love of baseball and the environment at Great American Ball Park combine for an exciting and memorable trip to the ballgame! A Reds victory makes things even better! WHO DEY!
The Cincinnati Bengals were founded in 1966 by former Cleveland Browns coach, Paul Brown as a member of the American Football League. Brown served as their coach until 1975. The Bengals have made several appearances in the NFL since 1970 winning the AFC Championship in 1981 and 1988. They ended up losing the Super Bowl to the San Francisco 49ers both times. Their most recent playoff appearances were a string of consecutive berths from 2011-2015. Their 2015 Wild Card game appearance ended with a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Famous Bengals include Ken Anderson, Boomer Esiason, Chris Collinsworth, AJ Green, Andy Dalton, Reggie Williams, Lemar Parrish, Isaac Curtis, Chad Ochocinco and Anthony Munoz. The team is still under the leadership of Coach Marvin Lewis. Current players Andy Dalton, AJ Green and Tyler Eifert make the Bengals offense one of the most productive in the NFL. Defensive standouts Vincent Ray, Dre Kirkpatrick and Chris Worley help keep the Bengals a highly ranked defensive unit.
THECITIVIEW.COM
The Bengals shared Riverfront Stadium with the Cincinnati Reds from 1970 through 1999 and began playing at Paul Brown Stadium in 2000. In 1981, the Bengals went on a winning streak in November, winning all 5 games that month and eventually earning a trip to the Super Bowl. During the streak enthusiastic fans began chanting: Who Dey, Who Dey, Who Dey think gonna beat them Bengals. The answer, of course, is NOBODY! The chant is still used at games today and the Bengals mascot has taken the name Who Dey as well. 2016 was the first time they missed the playoffs since 2010. They are now preparing for a successful 2019/2020 season. Fans expectations are also high and the season promises to be exciting for Bengals fans everywhere! For more information visit: bengals.com

The Edge of Bourbon Country
T Bouquet cocktail, photo courtesy of meetnky
he Cincinnati region was once home to one of the most robust collection of bourbon distilleries, whiskey warehouses and spirit infrastructure in the country. The unfortunate events of Prohibition put most of the industry out of business, but bourbon has come roaring back into the region. Northern Kentucky, the gateway to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, has once again risen to take its rightful place as the Edge of Bourbon Country. Once crossing the Ohio River, you can visit the region’s new stars in the spirit industry like New Riff Distilling in Newport, Boone County Distilling or any of the new up and coming distilleries in the region. The B-Line, a special bourbon experience takes advantage of these distilleries and partners them with select bourbon centric bars and restaurants to provide you with a first sip of America’s Native Spirit. There is so much more to enjoy in the Edge of Bourbon Country like breweries aging their beer in bourbon barrels or wineries doing the same. An abundant array of amazing bourbon bars on both sides of the river as well as culinary gems focusing on the spirit. The options for bourbon in the Queen City are as diverse as the spirit itself. Experience as much of our region’s unique bourbon culture for yourself and make sure to visit one of the many retailers focusing on bourbon to bring Kentucky’s finest home with you.

Home of Cincinnati’s Original Oyster Festival Washington Platform Oyster Festival: Bringing Coastal Flavors To Cincy Each Spring
S
pring in Cincinnati is always made a bit more divine – at least from a culinary perspective – thanks to the Washington Platform Oyster Festival. The event serves up a wide variety of seafood and oyster-based dishes, including a 40-item fresh oyster menu. The festival kicks off in late March or early April and continues through early May at the saloon and restaurant, which is located at 1000 Elm Street near Over-the-Rhine (OTR) in downtown Cincy. Popular menu items include the smoked oyster salad, oyster-stuffed jalapenos and – of course – fresh-shucked oysters on the half shell. But the culinary delights at the Washington Platform Oyster Festival don’t stop there. For example, the oysters Bonne Femme is made with fresh oysters, crabmeat, scallion and shrimp that is baked au gratin in a rich champagne cream sauce and served with dirty rice. And if that doesn’t make your mouth water, there’s always the traditional Washington Platform fried oyster dinner, as well as the steak and oysters, which features a petit filet grilled to perfection served with six southern fried oysters. In addition to the annual oyster festival, the Washington Platform Saloon and Restaurant is also known for its live jazz music, with an impressive lineup

Keg-Tapping at Hofbräuhaus Newport
Prost!
Y
ou’ve already read in this book that Cincinnati has a long standing beer brewing history. One of the strongest in the nation, as a matter of fact. Cincinnati is currently experiencing a micro-brewing explosion with many local craft breweries growing and many new brewers about to begin producing. There are approximately one dozen craft breweries in the Cincinnati area. These brew houses offer a wide variety of styles and many seasonal brews are becoming very popular. The Hofbräuhaus Newport was the first authentic Hofbräuhaus in America, modeled after the legendary 400+ year-old Hofbräuhaus in Munich, Germany! They’ve gone one step further and brought authentic German bier and Bavarian dishes directly to the Cincinnati area. Guests are now able to enjoy many of the traditions from Germany that have made Hofbräuhaus famous. Every year the Hofbräuhaus hosts their own Oktoberfest to spotlight their own beers! Even the music and entertainment offered are genuine German! Whether you’re German or not, the Hofbräuhaus Newport is an exciting and always lively place to celebrate any occasion. Actually, no occasion needed!

Cincinnati breweries also get together once a year for the Cincinnati Craft Beer Oktoberfest. There are also occasional “beer fests” that will allow you to sample some of the finest craft beers in town. If craft beers are your thing, the brewers in Cincinnati will surely leave you impressed. Say “yes” to the Goetta! A
popular local breakfast meat, Goetta can be traced back to the large number of German immigrants who settled in the Cincinnati area. Typically a mixture of pork, beef, Steelcut oats and spices, Goetta is traditionally prepared much like a sausage patty and is often served with eggs and toast. Goetta has a rich, savory scent and is available in either spicy or traditional varieties. It can be cut into virtually any thickness or shape and its meaty flavor is complemented by the whole grain flavor of the oats. When perfectly prepared, Goetta is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Dip in ketchup or dunk it in Maple syrup. Any way you like it, Goetta is one of the culinary contributions that Cincinnati can call its own. Although Goetta’s exact history is somewhat debated, evidence points to its creation in the late 1800’s by German immigrants living in Cincinnati. However, some dispute this version of history and claim it was actually first made across the river from Cincinnati in Covington, Kentucky. Here, a family restaurant reportedly sold a combination of oatmeal and meat known as Irish Mush, but over time the product was reportedly copied and taken across the river, where it received the German moniker, Goetta. The controversy continues.

Cincinnati Music Hall
C
incinnati is well known for its historic architecture and its support of the fine arts. One of the city’s best examples of this featuring a combination of both is Cincinnati Music Hall. The Music Hall, located just north of downtown in Over The Rhine is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks and is home to the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops Orchestras as well as the Cincinnati Opera, Cincinnati Ballet and the annual May Festival, which is the longest-running choral festival in the Western hemisphere. Cincinnati Music Hall was built in 1878 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1975. It originally served as the city’s first convention center and was host to many nationally acclaimed Industrial Exhibitions. Through the years the building has hosted a wide array of gatherings from sporting events, trade shows and exhibits, the National Democratic and Republican Conventions and campaign appearances by several US Presidents. While it has built its reputation as a classical music venue, many of the world’s greatest artists have performed here. Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Elton John, Bob Dylan and Pink Floyd have performed here, among a long list of notable others. The Hall also has a reputation as one of the country’s most haunted buildings. The building was constructed atop a local cemetery and there have been numerous reports of strange phenomenon in and around the building.
56
Music Hall possesses one of the largest and bestequipped stages in the world. A 90-ton steel grid framework is used to suspend scenery and lighting. The Music Hall was extensively renovated through 2016-2017 and reopened in October 2017. It continues to be a very important part of Cincinnati and the vibrant Over-The-Rhine neighborhood. Washington Park, located directly across Elm St., was also recently renovated and provides a beautiful greenspace and gathering spot for local residents and visitors. Tours of Cincinnati Music Hall are available. Go backstage and beyond through private and public spaces and explore this stunning and majestic structure and how it reflects the spirit of both past and present. You’ll quickly see why it was the envy of the Great Midwest in the 19th century and the cornerstone of the 21st century renaissance of Cincinnati's historic heart. Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra
T
he Cincinnati Symphony was established in 1896 and is the sixth oldest symphony in the US. At that time, Cincinnati was only a small village surrounding Fort Washington. The Cincinnati Orchestra gave its first concert in December of 1872. The nucleus of that group went on to become the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
The Cincinnati Pops, which also performs as the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, is under the direction of John Morris Russell and presents a diverse array of musical styles, all bathed in the world-renowned “Cincinnati Sound.” The Pops was officially founded in 1977 with the late Erich Kunzel, and since 1980, the Orchestra has sold ten million recordings around the globe. The CSO was the first American orchestra to be featured on a national radio broadcast in 1921 and continues to reach millions of listeners across the country and around the world annually through radio broadcasts and online streaming. While very rich in history and accolades worldwide, the Cincinnati Symphony is just now coming off another extraordinary season. The Orchestra returned to Cincinnati Music Hall after a $143 million renovation and a three-week European Tour that included debuts at the Edinburgh International Festival and the BBC Proms. The CSO was also the first international orchestra to perform at the new Paris concert hall, La Seine Musicale where they premiered a new acclaimed edition of Gershwin’s An American in Paris. The CSO’s Concertos for Orchestra album, which features three pieces commissioned by the orchestra, was nominated for two Grammy Awards and the CSO introduced the world to five new commissions this past week alone.
THECITIVIEW.COM
In the coming season, Music Director Louis Langree and the CSO are pleased to welcome such acclaimed artists as Joshua Bell, Danil Trifonov, Alisa Wellerstein, Donald Runnicles, Yefim Bronfan, Sir Mark Eder and composer in residence Jonathan Bailey Holland. The Cincinnati Pops has had more albums on the Billboard charts than any other orchestra on the planet. Their latest project American Originals:1918 was recorded live at Music Hall and was released in the fall of 2018. The Pops’ American Soundscapes series of online videos have a global audience. In the coming season, Conductor John Morris Russell and the Cincinnati Pops welcome acclaimed artists such as; Hamilton star Renee Elise Goldsberry, an evening with R&B legend Ledisi, Grammy-winning Bruce Hornsby and The Noisemakers, among others. Celebrating the 125th Anniversary Season, Conductor Louis Langree and the CSO ignites sparks of creativity. Join the celebration at the 125th Anniversay concert, as George Gershwin takes the stage and Music Hall gets loud with color. Also in the coming season, Renee Fleming and Rachmaninoff, Play of Light: Ravel’s Enchanment, Beethoven Akademie 1808, Mozart’s Paris, among others. The “Right On” Queen City Sound
Did you know Cincinnati was home to one of the most influential record labels? Or that The
Twist (Later made famous by Chubby Checker) was first recorded here? Some of James Brown’s most significant recordings were also recorded at King Studios!
This legendary hotbed of funk and country music was located at 1540 Brewster Avenue, just north of downtown, in a former ice storage building. Owner Syd Nathan started King Records to fill the country music niche that was currently being ignored by the larger record labels of the time, in 1943. Soon after, King Records began recording and releasing R&B songs from many black artists, also being ignored by the major labels. King was essentially a one stop shop for making records. An artist could record the song, make the masters, press the records and even ship them out all in the same day. These records were usually pressed in small numbers making many of them rarities and collectors items. The roster at King included some of the most influential artists of all time. While there are way too many to list we’ll give you a few highlights. The roster of Country artists who recorded for King included Reno & Smiley, David Allen Coe, Wayne Cochran, Minnie Pearl, Ralph Willis and the Stanley Brothers.
58
Blues artists included Freddie King, Blind Blake, Earl Hooker and Johnny “Guitar” Watson. King also dabbled in jazz with recordings by Earl Bostic and Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, but the music that really put King over the top was their R&B. Little Willie John, Roy Brown, Joe Tex and Hank Ballard & the Midnighters were all very popular, but it was James Brown who consistently topped the charts and kept things moving at King. James Brown spent a significant amount of time in the Cincinnati area while recording for King. In 2008, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum placed a historical marker at the King Records site. The building is still standing as is the Manse Hotel building nearby, which is where many famous black entertainers stayed while it was in operation, including James Brown and the roster of King recording artists.

Statue of Cincinnatus; “Lucky” Quinctus Pigasus at Sawyer Point Park
When in Cincinnati...
ou may not notice at first glance, but Cincinnati has a couple of very interesting things in common with ancient Rome. First, the city was settled in an area featuring seven hills, just as Rome was. Second, the name Cincinnati is derived from the very effective and efficient Roman dictator, Cincinnatus. Quick history lesson - Cincinnatus was a great leader of Ancient Rome. He was a war hero and rose to power but gave it all up when he felt he could do no more good and retired to a farm. This example gave birth to The Society of The Cincinnati after the American Revolution, which preached the words of Cincinnatus, and eventually lent it’s name to the city. The city of Cincinnati was settled in an area who’s topography includes several hills forming a crescent from the east bank of the Ohio River to the west bank and is often referred to as “The City of Seven Hills.” However, there are many more than seven. Trying to get a consistent list of the “seven” hills proves to be most difficult, even amongst locals. No one can quite agree which ones make up the seven and which ones do not.
62
Depending on the source, any or all of the following “hills” should be included in the list: Mt. Airy, Mt. Adams, Mt. Echo, Mt. Healthy, Mt. Lookout, Mt. Storm, Mt. Washington, Walnut Hills, Price Hill (sometimes referred to as Mt. Harrison), Fairview Heights, Vine Street Hill, Fairmount and Mt. Hope. There are several examples of art throughout the city that give a nod to the Roman connection. On Central Parkway (near Vine) is a mural of a Roman Colosseum with a statue of Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, the city’s namesake, at it’s base. This mural is the definition of epic, and you’ll find yourself wanting to step in for a photo...hard to do in a painting! However, you can, pose with Lucies “Lucky” Quinctus Pigasus from “The Big Pig Gig.” You will find him at Sawyer Park near the other, more formal statue at Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus.

Covington
L
ocated directly across the Ohio River from downtown Cincinnati in Northern Kentucky, the community of Covington was established in 1814. With a constant influx of industry and inhabitants, Covington was a full-fledged city by the mid-1830’s. “The Point” at the confluence of the Licking and Ohio Rivers, was both the commercial and residential focus of the city for several years, home to various shipping facilities and industry along the rivers, taking full advantage of Covington’s superior river location. The architecture and culture of this area can be traced back to the city’s German heritage. One stunning example is the historic Covington-Cincinnati suspension bridge, built by John A. Roebling between 1856 and 1867. Covington’s most popular destination for visitors, MainStrasse Village, is a thriving entertainment district with local restaurants integrated with a few boutique shops along Main Street. The neighborhood is characterized by its 6th Street promenade and the Goose Girl Fountain that often hosts festivals and other entertaining events for both children and adults. Devou Park offers an array of recreational opportunities including an 18-hole golf course, multiple playgrounds and picnic shelters, over eight miles of mountain bike trails, an amphitheater, a fishing lake and a spectacular view of downtown Cincinnati. Covington is also home to a variety of attractions and festivals, including the MainStrasse Village “Original” Goetta Fest, which is held each summer to celebrate everything about Goetta. Covington is easily accessible from downtown Cincinnati and Newport. In fact, downtown Covington is a very short walk across the Roebling Suspension Bridge from downtown Cincinnati. owntown Cincinnati is located along the Ohio River and surrounded by steep hills. The downtown area is conveniently connected to Northern Kentucky by several bridges spanning the Ohio River. It is certainly one of the easiest cities from which to cross from one side of the river to the other. Downtown Cincinnati is well known for its collection of fabulous architecture, historic buildings. Fountain Square and several world class museums. It is also home to two major sports stadiums; The Great American Ballpark home of the Cincinnati Reds and Paul Brown Stadium home of the Bengals. Cincinnati was once one of the country’s most influential business centers during the 19th century and there are numerous reminders of that era throughout the downtown area. One of the interesting features is the John A Roebling Suspension Bridge. In 1866, the first pedestrians crossed this bridge that connects the Kentucky and Ohio shores of Covington and Cincinnati. The bridge is named after it’s engineer and designer, John A. Roebling. The bridge has stood fast for over 150 years and is still the busiest non freeway bridge in the area. Many pedestrians use the bridge still, especially when attending events at Great American Ball Park or Paul Brown Stadium. The Suspension Bridge connecting Covington and Cincinnati was a marvel of its time and served as the blueprint for Roebling’s other well known engineering feat...The Brooklyn Bridge. It is still an integral part of the Cincinnati skyline and the city’s colorful history

yde Park has long been a leading community in Cincinnati for people from many walks of life wanting to live, go to school, shop, eat and play amongst abundant green spaces, parks, shops, restaurants and turn-of-the-last century homes set amongst lush 100+ year old flora and fauna. At less than 5 miles from downtown Cincinnati, Hyde Park offers those who choose to live and visit here terrific proximity to the center-city as well as easy access to other destinations including the Greater Cincinnati airport, Northern Kentucky and popular outlying suburbs. Think of Hyde Park as a picturesque one-of-a-kind “cityburb” and you’ve got the picture. Idyllic Hyde Park Square is the heart of this community. The center of “The Square” (Erie Avenue between Edwards and Michigan) is defined by an island park in the middle of Erie Boulevard featuring lawns and landscaped areas as well as historic Kilgore Fountain. Residents and visitors alike find this spot great for sitting on a bench to enjoy a Graeter’s ice cream cone, relaxing after a great breakfast at The Echo, communing with neighbors (and their happy hounds) or just taking in the sights. ituated directly across the Ohio River from downtown Cincinnati, the city of Newport was settled in 1791 and by 1900 was the third largest city in Kentucky, after Covington and Louisville. Newport and Covington are both considered satellites of Cincinnati. Newport once had the reputation of "Sin City" due to its upscale gambling casinos on Monmouth street, but Monmouth was also home to many many men's stores, nice restaurants, and ice cream parlors. In the 1980s and 1990s, Newport began developing its riverfront and focusing on "family friendly" tourism. In May 1999 the $40-million Newport Aquarium opened and the Newport on the Levee entertainment complex opened the following year. Today, Newport is home to a thriving entertainment district, with attractions such as the world-class aquarium, upscale shopping and dining, the World Peace Bell and the sightseeing offerings of BB Riverboats and Stratus Helicopters. For a glimpse of Newport’s storied past, the Gangsters Dueling Piano Bar is the starting point of the Newport Gangster Tour which visits many of the local spots previously visited by America’s most notorious gangsters. Newport hosts a variety of festivals throughout the year, including the Queen City Sausage Fest in July, the Great Inland Seafood Festival in August and the Newport Oktoberfest each September. Newport is easily accessible from any part of Cincinnati or Covington and can even be reached on foot from downtown via the Purple People Bridge.

t. Adams is very popular among locals and visitors. The area is known for its charm with narrow, winding streets, spectacular river and city views, a bustling commercial life and interesting examples of architectural styles, including five buildings currently listed on the historic register. This upscale residential neighborhood is located just east of downtown and is surrounded by Eden Park. The park is home to the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Krohn Conservatory, Playhouse in the Park and the historic Rookwood Pottery facility, which now operates as a restaurant. Originally named Mt. Ida, it was rechristened Mt. Adams after President John Quincy Adams delivered the dedication address for the then new Cincinnati Observatory in 1843. The Cincinnati Observatory owned the most powerful telescope of its kind when it opened. Mt. Adams is home to an important 150-year-old annual pilgrimage known as “Praying the Steps” which is a tradition carried out each year on Good Friday upon the steep, spiraling staircase leading to the Holy Cross-Immaculata Church. You can climb these stairs at any time, though, for a breathtaking and spectacular view of downtown Cincinnati, Newport, Bellevue and Covington, KY. The view is well worth the effort! The great variety of performing and visual arts, dining and entertainment combined with the well kept Victorian homes and spectacular views make Mt Adams a memorable way to spend the afternoon or evening while in Cincinnati. riginally settled in 1796, Montgomery was a coach stop on the Cincinnati-Zanesville Road, later known as the Montgomery Pike, with an inn, two taverns, a grist mill and a carding mill to process its agricultural products. In the 1960’s, Montgomery started to become an affluent bedroom community for people working in Cincinnati. The city has retained its historic downtown with many 19th-century houses scattered throughout the community. It is only 10 minutes north of downtown Cincinnati and near the Blue Ash and Kenwood communities. Eight Montgomery landmarks are registered with the National Register of Historic Places. Downtown Montgomery features many high end retail boutiques, jewelers, restaurants and home furnishing showrooms in a very clean, safe and quiet environment. T
his neighborhood’s distinctive name comes from its builders and early residents, German immigrants of the mid-19th century. Many walked to work across bridges over the Miami and Erie Canal, which separated the area from downtown Cincinnati. The canal was nicknamed “the Rhine” in reference to the Rhine River in Germany, and the newly-settled area north of the canal as “Over the Rhine.” Believed to be the largest intact urban historic district in the United States, Over the Rhine, also known as OTR among locals, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It contains the largest collection of Italianate architecture in the United States, and is an example of an intact 19th-century urban neighborhood. Its architectural significance has been compared to the French Quarter in New Orleans, the historic districts of Savannah, Georgia; Charleston, South Carolina, and Greenwich Village in New York City. This neighborhood was the nerve center of beer brewing during the late 1800’s. Today, Over The Rhine is home to a thriving arts community, many unique boutique shops and exciting restaurants. The historic and architecturally significant Cincinnati Music Hall, home to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is located here, as is the historic Findlay Market. Washington Park has recently completed a major renovation and is now one of the premier outdoor destinations in the city. OTR hosts the annual Cincinnati May Festival, held at Music Hall, Bockfest, and the Cincinnati Fringe Festival. The annual Cincinnati Reds Opening Day Parade begins its journey through downtown to Great American Ball Park at the Findlay Market. For more information please visit: OTRChamber.com

Tyler Davidson Fountain
D
edicated in 1871, the Tyler Davidson fountain is the centerpiece of downtown’s Fountain Square. The statue is also known as the Genius of Water, which pays homage to the Ohio River and its significance to the development of the city. Fountain Square has been symbolic of the center of Cincinnati since the Fountain’s installation. Cincinnati businessman Henry Probasco who was searching for a proper tribute to his business partner and Brother in Law, Tyler Davidson, secured the fountain in Germany. A large part of Cincinnati’s population at the time was either from Germany or of German descent and that is still true today. The statue originally faced east toward Europe for the same reason. The Fountain was renovated in 1970 for its Centennial celebration, in 1999 and in 2005 the entire Fountain Square was redone with the statue being moved to the center of the square. Many remember the Fountain from the opening sequence of the popular hit TV sitcom, WKRP in Cincinnati. Over 2 million people attend the many events held in Fountain Square throughout the year including the Oktoberfest and accompanying Wiener Dog races,

Fountain Square is family friendly and a great spot to enjoy during the warmer months as locals and visitors enjoy the fun atmosphere and regular goings on. Many times the square serves as an outdoor patio from which to enjoy the downtown area Fountain Square is also host to the annual PNC Summer Series at Fountain Square. All summer long beginning in late May, concerts, trivia contests and salsa dancing are held on various nights of the week. There are many fabulous restaurants located around and within a very short walking distance from the Square as well as some great shopping destinations.
