For The Love of Bourbon

B Matt Jamie of Bourbon Barrel Foods, during the daily stirring of the soy sauce in the barrels at the Butchertown location.

ourbon has always been one of Kentucky’s best known exports. The recent resurgence in its popularity and a worldwide interest in the making of the world’s finest bourbons has turned the industry into one of the area’s most popular and interesting tourist attractions. The interest and fascination with Bourbon goes far beyond bottled spirits. The recent Bourbon craze has morphed into many bourbon infused and inspired products. Many local craftsmen and women have utilized bourbon itself and various items used in its making, such used bourbon barrels, to create some of the most unique and flavorful condiments, chocolates, home décor and even cooking accessories you’ll ever find. No two bourbons are the same, as you’ll quickly find. Each label handcrafts their own recipe of ingredients and most have been handed down and perfected through several generations of trial, error and success. Many of the area’s best distilleries offer tours of their facilities and each provide an exciting behind the scenes look at how they hand craft their bourbons and why each brand is special in its own adaptation of the basic ingredients that come together to create Bourbon. These tours can be enjoyed while downtown or a short trip to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail is a great way to incorporate your bourbon education into a leisurely visit to Kentucky’s beautiful countryside. Retailers such as Bourbon Barrel Foods, Art Eatables and A Taste of Kentucky offer a vast array of bourbon related products that allow you to enjoy bourbon in many new and unique ways you’d never thought of. The Wine Rack on Frankfort Avenue offers the finest and most compete selection of local Bourbons in the area and the staff is well versed in Bourbon nuances to assist you in picking out the one best for you. Bourbon can now be enjoyed in many forms!

The Proof Is In The Barrel

24

Evan Williams Bourbon Experience

The invention of bourbon is subject to many legendary stories and figures, but is very hard to trace to an original source. Distilling was probably brought to present-day Kentucky in the late 18th century by Scots, Scottish-Irish, and other settlers who began to farm the area in earnest. The spirit they made evolved, and became known as bourbon in the early 19th century due to its historical association with the geographic area known as Old Bourbon (this consisted of the original Bourbon County of Virginia, a region that included much of today’s Eastern Kentucky.) Bourbon made for consumption within the United States must meet these requirements: Only whiskey produced in the United States can be called bourbon. Bourbon must be made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn. The remainder can be a mixture of wheat, rye and/or malted barley. Bourbon must be distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof (80% alcohol by volume). Bourbon, like other whiskeys, must be bottled at 80 proof or more (40% alcohol by volume.) Bourbon must be entered into the barrel for aging at no more than 125 proof (62.5% alcohol by volume). Bourbon must be aged in new, charred white oak barrels. Bourbon has no minimum specified duration for its aging period, although it must be aged at least briefly. Bourbon labeled as “Straight” bourbon must be aged for at least two years. Fluctuating the percentages of corn, wheat, rye and barley creates the many varieties and flavors found in today’s bourbon. The source of each of these grains and their effect on one another is another part of the formula. Each distillery has their own secret formula and variations to work their magic within these parameters. The formula itself, climate and climate changes as well as barrel storage location will influence the final product, not to mention the length of the barrel aging. All of these factors delicately come together to produce a variety of bourbon flavors. Over the past several years Bourbon’s popularity has outpaced demand and many distillers are working hard to not only deliver more product but also to create and refine new flavors. If you’ve ever wanted proof that mingling Bourbons is an art unto itself, you’ll find it in the award-winning, perfectly balanced, Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon. Only Four Roses combines two mashbills and 5 proprietary yeast strains to create 10 distinct Bourbon recipes, in which they mingle together to create their family of premium Bourbons. Four Roses Small Batch mingles four of the ten recipes which gives hints of rich fruits, sweet oak, and caramel, with a soft and smooth finish. Knob Creek selects the highest-quality rye to create the World’s Best Rye (2016 International Wine and Spirits Competition Gold Outstanding Winner in Rye Category). Knob Creek Straight Rye Whiskey embodies shades of gold to light amber tones and bold spiciness with undertones of vanilla and oak. When drinking Knob Creek Rye you sense notes of herbs and rye with nuances of oak, finishing warm and smooth with spice throughout.

Jim Beam American Stillhouse

O

ne of our area’s most notable products and industries is the manufacturing and distribution of Bourbon. While Bourbon can be made anywhere in the US, it is most commonly associated with Kentucky. It has been estimated that over 90% of all Bourbon produced originates in Kentucky. Only whiskey produced in the United States can carry the name Bourbon. Bourbon was named America’s native spirit by an act of Congress in 1964.

Evan Williams Black Label, named after Evan Williams who founded Kentucky’s first commercial distillery along the banks of the Ohio River, is produced with the same time honored method Evan Williams mastered years ago. It is an 86 proof bourbon featuring a medium amber color along with a light nose with deep vanilla and mint. You’ll taste notes of oak, brown sugar and caramel and a medium to long finish. For those so inclined, Evan Williams White Label, their signature 100 proof Bottledin-Bond bourbon, offers a little more kick. Each year their Master Distillers select barrels that meet their exacting standards. These barrels are used for Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage Bourbon, a five-time Whiskey of the Year award winner. Each bottle is marked with the vintage date it was put into oak, as well as the year it was bottled. Located off the banks of the Kentucky River, Buffalo Trace Distillery has been making bourbon whiskey for more than 200 years. As the world’s most award-winning distillery, Buffalo Trace Distillery produces some of the most sought-after bourbons, such as Pappy Van Winkle, Weller, Blanton’s, and of course, Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. With bourbon’s increasing popularity, many local companies such as Bourbon Barrel Foods have come up with very innovative and tasty ways to utilize leftover bourbon barrels. New bourbon-influenced products are being introduced regularly. As you travel throughout the area you will certainly notice the prevalence and availability of more brands of bourbon than anywhere else in the world. Take advantage and sample some of the world’s finest bourbon while you’re here. If you’re looking to take some home with you, no one offers a wider selection of bourbons than The Wine Rack, 2632 Frankfort Ave., (502) 721-9148. Art Eatables: The Original Bourbon Chocolatier

K

elly Ramsey, founder of Art Eatables, is the world’s first (and currently only) bourboncertified chocolatier. Lots of people dump bourbon into a candy and are content with that. Kelly is unique in focusing on carefully-crafted pairings that accentuate the flavors of the bourbon and make them the star in her chocolates.

34

The mission at Art Eatables has always been to expose and promote Kentucky’s bourbon culture. “I have always said that it looks like we’re selling chocolate, but we’re really selling bourbon,” Ramsey says of her store. Art Eatables is an official sponsor of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and, with Kelly’s skill, they make products for more distillers than the all of the candy companies in the Kentucky combined. Their best known products are original creations like the Small-batch Bourbon Truffle™ and the Orange Chimère™, and new riffs on older candy styles, like their take on the Modjeska. The original plan was for a retail store, a production space and a tasting room where Kelly could really focus on the pairing of spirits and chocolate, and lead people through tastings where they could see how chocolate and bourbon can come together. The tasting room should be ready in early Fall of 2019. While Art Eatables is a chocolate shop, it is focused on celebrating bourbon and educating people about the area’s wider bourbon culture. To do this properly, you need to really care about bourbon. “If someone can’t be bothered to learn the difference between a high-rye bourbon and a rye whiskey, they don’t really have the love that it takes to make a really great tasting,” says Ramsey. Art Eatables is also the home of their own Lollipoppery™ products. “We’ve started to clearly separate the candies that are either made with, or designed to be paired with, bourbon and spirits from the things that are really just meant for kids to enjoy. Everything under the Lollipoppery brand will be made with kids in mind, and always nut free.” The slogan “nut-free, kid friendly” is their guiding principle! he iconic Twin Spires. People come from all over the world to see them, Derby day or not. They signify that you are indeed at the world’s most legendary racetrack.

The only way to tour Churchill Downs is through the Kentucky Derby Museum, the racetrack’s official tour partner. There is a variety of daily tour options to choose from, and you have time to take a few! The 30-minute Historic Walking Tour comes with general admission and takes you out to the racetrack where you may get to see horses exercise while you soak up Derby knowledge from your tour guide. If you want to take things up a notch, add on a Behind the Scenes Tour. You will head toward the Paddock, where jockeys mount their horses right before the big race. There are plenty of opportunities for pictures especially when the group gravitates towards those gleaming Twin Spires. The group then makes its way to some of the ritziest places inside Churchill Downs where the rich and famous do Derby! You will be as close to the Twin Spires as you can get, so be ready to snap a picture! This includes club level areas and the famous Millionaire’s Row to see that fantastic view! From the glam—to the gym. Yes, the tour explores the Jockey’s Quarters, too, where they work out, nap, get dressed, and weigh out. Unless you are willing to pay the big bucks on Derby Day, this 90-minute tour is the most economical way to get into some of the most elite spots inside Churchill Downs! If you want to see Thoroughbreds, Kentucky Derby Museum also offers The Barn and Backside Tour! This takes you to the back of the historic racetrack, which is closed to the general public. Your van tour will venture through the barn area, where you may see horses getting new shoes, getting baths, or simply grazing in the side lawn. Chances of seeing horses working out on the track are good when you book one of the early morning tours. This experience allows you to see the fascinating community that lives on the backside.

38

You can take this experience to the next level by doing the fourhour Around the Track Golf Cart Tour, which is even more in depth, taking you around the backside to see barns and horses as well as inside Churchill Downs, then ending with lunch at the track kitchen. Save time to explore Kentucky Derby Museum’s two floors of interactive exhibits. The Museum takes you through all aspects of the Derby: from the lavish fashion, to the stories of horses, jockeys and trainers. You can get up close with greatness, taking in fascinating artifacts and personal items from the champions and legends of the sport. The Museum’s 17-minute feature film, “The Greatest Race,” lets you feel the magic of Derby Day. This 360-degree, high definition theater experience immerses you in the sights and sounds of Derby, from start to finish. This movie is the closest experience to Derby without actually attending! It would not be the Kentucky Derby experience without trying a Mint Julep! Stop by the bar in the Derby Cafe Express and sip on one to relax after your tour. Take home a piece of your visit by purchasing commemorative Derby gifts at every price point in the Finish Line Gift Shop which offers an array of official merchandise including clothing, hats, Mint Julep cups and our famous Kentucky Derby glasses. Going to the Kentucky Derby is a bucket list item for people around the globe. It happens once a year on the first Saturday in May, but there is one place where every day is Derby Day, and that is the Kentucky Derby Museum! For more information visit derbymuseum.org

The Art of Cuisine

L

ouisville is known for its diverse dining options. Internationally and nationally-trained chefs flock to Louisville to practice what they’ve learned in the kitchen, often translating their visions into their own eateries. These entrepreneurial chefs have established boutique restaurants throughout the city, and many are part of the movement to use seasonal, locally-grown produce, poultry and meats.

Martini Italian Bistro

National Geographic, Zagat, Travel + Leisure and members of the International Association of Culinary Professionals have all ranked Louisville as one of the toprated foodie destinations in the world. Ethnic fare abounds from Thai, Greek, Vietnamese, Cuban and Indian to the more standard Italian, Chinese, French, German and Mexican. The authentic flavors of dozens of countries are available. If the view out the window is as important as the food on the table, choose from the more than a dozen restaurants on both banks of the river with a view of the Louisville skyline or the Indiana shore. Stay downtown, head up or downstream of the city, enjoy fine dining or picnic fare, and find restaurants with a great view of the mighty Ohio. Why limit yourself to one style of cuisine when there are over 2,500 restaurants available? From country cooking served family style to haute cuisine, formal courses to alfresco finger food, downtown to uptown — Louisville’s got it!

Dining Along Historic Frankfort Avenue

O

ver the past several years, Frankfort Avenue has become a hotbed for some of he best local dining. Restaurants along The Avenue, as locals fondly call it, feature a variety of cuisines and most of these are chef owned and operated adding to their appeal and success. Many of our favorite dining destinations are located here and they deliver on every visit. Two of the city’s most knowledgeable wine and bourbon experts call Frankfort Avenue home as well. Here are a few suggestions: Volare Italian Ristorante has been serving fine modern and authentic Italian cuisine here for many years. Chef Joshua Moore combines his expert skills with a passion for locally sourced ingredients and house made products. The combination of Chef Moore’s passions and the refined Italian design of the dining rooms are a winning combination. Bourbons Bistro is another local favorite featuring a seasonal menu that is bourbon inspired and the ingredients local sourced. With over 130 bourbons available and a barrel selection program overseen by owner and bourbon aficionado Jason Brauner, Bourbons Bistro also serves as nerve center of Bourbon experience. Jason’s bourbon knowledge is only matched by John Johnson at the Wine Rack just a few steps up the street. The Wine Rack is also a local nerve center of Bourbon experiences. Owner John Johnson has an in depth knowledge of both wines and bourbons and he’ll gladly share when asked. The wine and bourbon selections he offers have been carefully chosen based on the quality of the product. If you’re looking for some bourbon inspiration and /or want to take some of that back home with you, The Wine Rack is your answer. The Avenue and the fine restaurants and business that are located here have established themselves as a reputable and reliable resource for local dining and entertainment. Volare Italian Ristorante

1030 Goss Ave (502) 822-3777 sarinolouisville.com Sarino, serving authentic Italian cuisine since 2017, has been a welcome addition to the Germantown-Schnitzelburg neighborhood. Sarino is the realization of the long-term dream of Carmelo Gabriele, developed over the years while working alongside his father, Chef Agostino Gabriele. Named after a beloved parted uncle, much passion and pride has gone into creation of the Sarino Restaurant. Patrons have the option of dining al fresco on the lusciously green courtyard patio, in-style amidst the modern, sleek indoor seating, or at the communal bar area which often accommodates parties of 20+.

2300 Frankfort Ave. (502) 894-4446 volare-restaurant.com Volare Italian Ristorante is a fine dining restaurant serving modern Italian cuisine with southern hospitality. “Volare,” “to fly” in Italian, is a fitting namesake for a dining experience that soars, ascending beyond the ordinary.

he dining scene in Louisville is a versatile mix of cuisines and expert chefs and owners. This combination is further enhanced by a wide variety of neighborhood backdrops that incorporate a local and authentic feel into an expertly prepared meal. Fortunately, dining al fresco is a common option at these restaurants and add yet another layer to create a perfect lunch or dinner. All of the restaurants you see featured in The CitiVew Louisville guide are among the city’s finest. If you’re looking for an outdoor dining experience, here are a few of our suggestions: In the downtown area, the patio at the Bluegrass Brewing Company on S. 4th St is spacious and festive. Their sidewalk dining at their location on the corner of Main and 3rd St is right in the heart of downtown and offers a great al fresco experience. Marketplace Restaurant at Theatre Square offers a gorgeous bar and outdoor seating, while Mi Casita on 4th, sits between several major hotels and offers great people watching. Joe’s Crab Shack, located near Waterfront Park, has an expansive outdoor deck and a great view of the Ohio River. The Cafe, located in the recently renovated Paristown, has an excellent patio featuring a beautiful garden complete with a natural waterfall and fishpond. Along Historic Frankfort Avenue, Volare Italian Ristorante has a cozy patio that makes for a great romantic meal. Just down the street, Bourbons Bistro offers an exposed patio that allows you to experience the personality of the Clifton neighborhood. If you’re dining in the Highlands area, the Uptown Café’s corner location is perfect for people watching and experiencing the unique and diverse personality of that neighborhood. Located east of downtown, in the Paddock Shops, both Martini Italian Bistro and Mitchell’s Fish Market feature expansive and festive covered patios and are popular gathering spots for locals. Captain’s Quarters, located on the east side of Louisville, is situated directly on the banks of the Ohio River and offers a grand view and is very spacious. CQ, as it is known by locals, has several outdoor dining areas, each with its own unique setting and view of the river and the surrounding area. The aesthetics here make it worth the time to drive over and you’ll find yourself relaxed and inclined to stay for a while. These are some of our favorites and each is a sure bet for great food with a great view!

ermantown is one of Louisville’s oldest neighborhoods and, as the name suggests, features a strong German heritage. Located just three miles southeast of downtown, Germantown has found a way to retain its historical personality while becoming home to many younger residents. The new influx of youth has also brought along a resurgence of great dining and unique retail options not to be found anywhere else I the city. If you’re visiting in July you should definitely take part in the World Championship Dainty Contest. German immigrants invented the game where competitors use a 3-foot broom handle to pop up and hit a small wooden peg. The furthest peg hit wins! As you would expect, the neighborhood celebrates Oktoberfest on Goss Avenue each year with beer, sausages, wiener dog races and yodeling contests. Two of our favorite dining spots are located just a few block from one another along the neighborhood’s main street, Goss Avenue. Eiderdown highlights the neighborhood’s German heritage while Sarino delivers authentic Italian dishes. As a bonus they both offer outdoor dining! Eiderdown, one of the first of the finer restaurants to locate in the Germantown area, specializes in thoughtful German-American dishes. Heather Burks, James Gunnoe and their staff have worked together for many years here and the family like atmosphere is immediately obvious and makes you comfortable right away. They use many local ingredients and make as many of their menu items in house as possible. This results in the best sausages, pretzels, beer cheese and desserts in town! Sarino, serving authentic Italian cuisine since 2017, has been a welcome addition to the Germantown-Schnitzelburg neighborhood. Owner Carmelo Gabriele has put much passion and pride into the creation of Sarino Restaurant. Patrons have the option of dining al fresco on the lusciously green courtyard patio, in-style amidst the modern, sleek indoor seating, or at the communal bar area which often accommodates parties of 20+. With the highest quality, imported ingredients coupled with a talented culinary and service team, Sarino is an experience not to be missed. The Germantown neighborhood is one of Louisville’s hidden gems and a must stop for an authentic visit to the past with the comfort of excellent dining and shopping.

owntown Louisville is a thriving hub of activity that includes concerts, sporting events of all types and cultural events that will rival those of any metropolitan area. The area continues to boom with new hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues opening at a very rapid pace. Of course there is no shortage of restaurants appropriate for a stop before or after any of these outings throughout the downtown area. The Troll Pub Under The Bridge, located at 150 W. Washington St., is literally under the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge at 2nd St. next to the Yum! Center. This 6,000 SF subterranean space is a unique underground dining experience you’ll not soon forget. You’ll be greeted by Louie the Troll as you enter and the dining room features cozy nooks, original brick walls and beamed wooden ceilings capturing the look and feel of the original building, which was erected in 1865. The menu is full of your favorite pub grub enhanced with a long list of local beers. The Troll Pub is open for lunch, dinner and late night dining, making it the perfect stop before or after your favorite event seven days a week! Dish On Market is another excellent choice for downtown dining prior to or after your event. Many local magazines have chosen Dish On Market as the best destination for Bourbon, Breakfast, Brunch and Burgers over the past several years. The menu features local twists of your comfort food favorite dishes, many of them made with locally sourced ingredients. Just hop online and let them know what you need! Mi Casita is another of downtown Louisville’s excellent choices for Mexican fare. The dishes at Mi Cocina are prepared with unconventional seasonings and the staff pays special attention

to details providing a homemade flavor. Their many recipes have been handed down for generations and have been reinvented to give them a personal touch. The authenticity carries through to their bar service and you’ll find you r favorite tequilas and maybe even a few you weren’t aware of. Located on South Fourth St. just steps away from the Palace Theater and Mercury Ballroom make this another perfect pre or post event destination. Joe’s Crab Shack combines the great seafood they’re well known for with an incredible view of the Ohio River. The spacious dining room sits high above the river and features both indoor and outdoor seating. As a bonus, Joe’s Crab Shack is only a few blocks from all downtown hotels. The restaurant is family friendly and the menu features fresh seafood, authentic flavors and Southern coastal flair. There are plenty of choices of crab, fish, lobster, mussels, clams, shrimp and even gluten free items! BBC is Louisville’s original craft brewery and pride themselves on their handcrafted, award winning beer. The beer menu features “always on tap” standards, seasonal offerings, and specialty brews. The food menu at BBC does not disappoint either! The vast and tasty choices make it hard to decide what to eat! It is important for many to note that there are Vegetarian options here and that makes any BBC location a crowd pleaser. As an added bonus, both downtown locations of BBC offer exceptional al fresco dining. The S. Fourth St. patio is expansive and relaxing. The location at 3rd and Main is near the KFC Yum! Center and most other downtown venues and is a great spot for people watching. dishonmarket.com trollpub.com ellbarriolouisvilleky.com micocina4th.com joescrabshack.com

Shopping In The Highlands

T

he Highlands is one of Louisville’s most unique and exciting destinations. You’ll find a long list of retailers and restaurants catering to nearly every style and taste. If you’re looking for an unforgettable and unique day or evening spent shopping and dining or just relaxing and getting a feel for the city’s personality, this is the perfect place. The Highlands neighborhood is so named because it sits atop a ridge between the middle and south forks of Beargrass Creek. The center of activity is focused along a three mile stretch of Bardstown Road that starts at the intersection of E. Broadway and Barrett Ave just a few blocks east of downtown Louisville and runs south to Taylorsville Road. Many of Louisville’s most interesting and unique retail shops and boutiques are to be found in the Highlands. It seems no two are alike and you’ll find plenty of things to peruse as you casually stroll down Bardstown Rd.

Our much-loved Forecastle Festival, an annual nauticalthemed weekend of music, art, and sustainability, features some of the best local talent and local food the Derby City has to offer. It is also a one of the premier music festivals in the world. Up and coming bands play alongside established and classic artists during three days of non-stop music. Headliners of previous festivals have included Chris Stapleton and My Morning Jacket while artists as diverse as Robert Plant and the most popular hip hop artists have also played the notorious festival. Everyone in attendance at the annual Forecastle Festival enjoys great views of downtown Louisville and the Ohio River alongside killer lineups. “The food and people watching is something I always look forward to, but most definitely the local artists is something you certainly don’t want to miss,” said a native Kentuckian who came to Louisville to attend Forecastle from Lexington. “I’ve come to Forecastle for the last three years and I love it! I really enjoy the urban setting of this festival and all the bands they have play. Louisville is a great city and has a lot to offer, and the annual Forecastle Festival is one of those many great things.” For more information visit forecastlefest.com

Louisville Mega Cavern Underground Zip-Line Course

by Kirsten Silven

oused in a former limestone quarry, the 100-acre Mega Cavern in Louisville is home to the world’s first underground zip-line course, offering adventure-seekers a spectacular and truly unique experience. Although it’s not a natural cave system, the Mega Cavern is nothing short of breathtaking, with towering columns of sheer rock to support the massive underground space, which lies beneath 10 lanes of the Watterson Expressway (I-264) and parts of the Louisville Zoo!

Entering the Mega Cavern is a breeze and some tours are handicap accessible. Once inside, the average temperature is 58-60 degrees year-round – a respite from the hot summers in Louisville and cold winter days! Close-toed shoes are required for most tours and it’s a good idea to have pockets that zip if you want to bring a cell phone or camera along to document the journey. Full-service restrooms are available in the gift shop check-in area, and lockers are also available to rent. There are a variety of activities to choose from at the Mega Cavern, including E-Bikes, a seated historical tram tour, and ropes challenge course, but the Mega Zips experience is among the most unique and popular activities in Louisville, as thousands of fabulous TripAdvisor reviews will attest! The whole experience takes about 2 ½ hours to complete, depending on the number of participants, and the tour ranges upward from the cavern floor to 8 stories high. Before practicing on a beginner-level zip, experienced guides will help suit you up with a harness, safety helmet and lamp. They will also cover a variety of basic safety measures, putting everyone at ease with lighthearted banter and an obvious passion for the job at hand. After the practice run, it’s on to the main attraction! Guaranteed to get your heart racing and adrenaline pumping, the zip-line tour features six totally unique underground zip lines and two suspension

bridges, offering plenty of opportunities to test your balance, skill and courage! The interplay of light and shadow on the colossal cavern walls is mesmerizing to behold as you fly from one platform to the next; an easy feat thanks to the expert help of the tour guides, who handle the braking, inspect and connect the gear and take every precaution to ensure the safety of all visitors. The longest line stretches an incredible 900 feet over the deep underground chasms, and challenge bridges, propelling you to speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. Other highlights of the tour included jumping off a 70-foot high platform and a dual/parallel racing zip finale that allows you to race another person to the finish line. Situated just five miles from the Louisville Airport and 15 minutes from downtown, the Mega Cavern is the perfect activity for travelers who want to see more of Louisville that typically meets the eye! Open year round with tours available rain or shine, it’s a good idea to reserve a spot in advance, since tours tend to fill up quickly. Don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity for adventure.
