Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals goes to Women in the 400 Medley Relay Race of the 2120 Olympic Games By: CG It has been twenty-eight years since the National Olympic Committees implemented the Olympic law “Ultimate Best”. The “Ultimate Best” law allows sports that have relays men and women compete head to head. These relay races are only for those who qualify in the final heat of the men’s and women’s final heat. The final heats are combined into the ultimate final heat where both men and women compete in the same heat together. In 2064, when news broke of the decision of the National Olympic Committees allowing this new law, there was much uproar in the sport community, world-wide. The news of women and men being able to compete in the same event and in the same heat was all people could talk about with the anticipation of the Olympic Games that came right after the “Ultimate Best” law was passed. There was talk about the fairness of the “Ultimate Best” law, and how it was unfair to have both men and women compete against each other because biologically men are physically stronger than women. Women on average, have less total muscle mass, both in absolute terms and relative to total body mass. The greater muscle mass of men is the result of testosterone-induced muscular hypertrophy. Men also have denser, stronger bones, tendons, and ligaments. This allows men to physically dominate a sport over women which is why the fairness of the “Ultimate Best” law was being questioned.

The heats in which the “Ultimate Best” law are implemented have been won by men mostly, with only a few women on the podium. There have been Olympic Games, where the event has only been won by men. However, for the first time ever in Olympic History, women dominated the final heat in which both men and women competed in. As an Olympic veteran in swimming, it was an honor to see these women win all medals in the 400 Medley Relay event. I swam representing USA’s team at the Olympics before the National Olympic Committees implemented the “Ultimate Best” law. My first thought when I heard about this new law the Olympics allowed was that I was very lucky to compete at that level only against women that were the same height as me and had the same muscle mass as me. There was no way I thought our women would have the chance to beat the men’s team. The men’s team had a longer stroke than us, they were taller, and had faster times than any of us. The game has changed though, and we saw that in the 400 Medley Relay at the Sydney 2120 Olympics. The men's relay team was said to win the 400 Medley Relay with Nate Richards anchoring with freestyle and Alex Garner starting the relay with his 52.08 seconds in the 100 yards backstroke. The women’s USA relay team was said to come at second place behind the men’s USA team, with the Australian’s women's team coming at third place. Corrina Lopez’s 100 yards backstroke time was seeded at 52.74 seconds, but as the event started, within the 50 yards, Corrina Lopez was a full body length ahead of Nate Richards and the Australians women’s backstroke swimmer was right next to Richards. The crowd went while with the thought of having such a lead on the USA’s men’s team!
As Corrina Lopez touched the wall she has finished at a 51.87, breaking the 100 yard backstroke World Record. We then had Elizabeth Choi swimming butterfly after Corrina Lopez and she flew. There was no one catching up to her, and it continued like this till the very end with Jasmine Johnson finishing with the fastest 100 yard freestyle time of the night.

You were able to see the happiness of the USA’s women's team as they won gold. Not too long after, did the Australians women's team touch, winning silver. Behind the Australians team there was a very close race between the Koreans women’s team and the USA’s men's team, but the Korean women's team won by just a hand touch leaving the USA’s men's team at fourth. It took a few minutes before everyone went wild with the realization that this was the first time in Olympic history that gold, silver, and bronze were all won by women’s teams in an event that had both women and men. As I watched the event with my daughter, I couldn't help but cry as my daughter said “that will be me one day”. This was a win not only for the countries that placed on the podium in the 400 Medley Relay Race, but it was a win for women. It was no longer an option to say that beating a man was impossible because biologically they had the upper hand, at that time and at that moment, we now know that nothing could stop us from getting gold.
