The Little Yellowstone of Minnesota

A

t 256 acres, Alexander Ramsey Park is the largest municipal park in Minnesota. Formerly a Minnesota State Park from 1911-1957, miles of trails with footbridges crossing the Redwood River and Ramsey Creek give hikers and joggers the opportunity to explore the heavily wooded park with its deep ravines and beautiful trails. The trails can be accessed at many signed trail heads, complete with maps, throughout the park. Starting your journey at the trailhead behind the ELCA building, just before you reach the bridge, you’ll come across the old Burmeister Mill Site, marked by a plaque where you are able to overlook the Redwood River gorge. In 1889, a young

German immigrant came to Redwood Falls and established a business that became that springboard for many future enterprises in the community. At this site was located the Burmeister grist mill which received its power from the water of the Redwood River. In 1898, August Burmeister established an electric power plant which provided power for Redwood Falls and a number of neighboring communities. In 1901, he built the dam that today forms Lake Redwood. The construction of the dam was intended to provide a constant source of water for his mill and power plant. Just around the corner from the Burmeister site you will cross the Redwood River on

Ramsey Park Zoo

One of the park’s most popular attractions is the Ramsey Falls observation area, which utilizes rather unique bridges and pathways to access many varied scenic vistas of Ramsey Falls and Ramsey Creek. The area also provides ample picnic space with an open shelter, modern restroom building, playground, and access to some of the park’s most scenic hiking trails.

The Ramsey Park Zoo is a favorite among visitors of all ages. The recently renovated zoo features a permanent population of buffalo, elk, deer, and prairie dogs, along with numerous species of upland game and waterfowl. Friends of the Park, an active non-profit organization in the area committed to improving and maintaining Ramsey Park, has fundraised for many of the zoo and park improvements.

Park Shelters The park has five park shelters which have been carved out of the park’s natural woodlands. The Lower Shelter Area is the park’s original and largest recreation area, featuring the 1930’s W.P.A. Vintage Lower Shelter with its massive timber and granite structure. Three shelters can be reserved. Shelter reservations are available at www. redwoodareacommunitycenter. com or call 507-644-2333. Without reservations, shelters are on a firstcome first-serve basis.

History

History in the Redwood Area Francois Hotel The Hotel Francois was the largest building ever constructed in downtown Redwood Falls. It was an opulent hotel located in the center of the expanding agricultural community. The hotel burned to the ground in a dramatic 1903 fire and the current building was reconstructed on its original foundation in the image of its former self. Recently the building has become the center of redevelopment efforts in the downtown core with a vintage restaurant, residential, and retail spaces planned.

History Lower Sioux Agency

T

Lower Sioux Agency

he Bdewakantunwan Dakota (Sioux) is one of the seven bands of the Oceti Sakowin (Seven Council Fires). The Lower Sioux Indian Community, home of the Minnesota Bdewakantunwan band of Dakota, is located in south central Minnesota, bounded by Redwood County, and the Minnesota River. The Lower Sioux Indian Community, traditionally called Cansayapi (where they paint the trees red), offers a rare combination of scenic beauty and Minnesota heritage. The Lower Sioux Indian Community established a constitution and bylaws under the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934. This sovereign nation has a land base that consists of 1759 acres held in trust status. The land was never allotted to individual Bdewakantunwan Dakota’s, but home sites were assigned to the tribal citizens. There are about 1,100 acres classified as agricultural land grassland and cultivated land, 570 acres of forest. However, due to the historical background of the Bdewakantunwan band of Dakota, the Lower Sioux Indian Community does place historical claim to other sites outside of its current land base in the State of Minnesota encompassing an area of over 24 million acres in the Minnesota River Valley alone. Since 2007, the Lower Sioux Agency Historic Site has been managed by the Lower Sioux Indian Community in partnership with the Minnesota Historical Society. The Lower Sioux Agency was established in 1853 by the U.S. government to serve as administrative center for government efforts to remove the Bdewakantunwan and Wahpekute bands of Dakota to it’s reservation lands and to colonize them to become self-sufficient farmers. This reservation was just four percent of the land the Dakota previously inhabited. As the United States drifted toward civil war, promises to the Dakota tribes were all but forgotten amidst the graft and corruption in the Indian service. Frustrated and provoked by a series of broken promises and by reservation policies that forced cultural change, Dakota warriors decided to go to war with the United States on a hot August Sunday in 1862. The fighting lasted six weeks

and took the lives of nearly five hundred whites, mostly civilians, and an unknown but substantial number of Dakota. To learn more about the U.S. Dakota War of 1862, visit the Lower Sioux Agency Historic Site and learn stories of the people who lived and worked here, the history of life and early settlement on the Minnesota River, and human impact of the environment.
