Westbrook Fun Days Thursday, June 23 through Sunday, June 26

T

he 2016 Fun Days will once again deliver a variety of fun events, great food and excellent opportunities to socialize, offering area residents plenty of reasons to spend the weekend in Westbrook.

There’s something “fun” for every age when Westbrook gets together for its annual summer celebration.

Fun Days gets its start on Thursday evening with a community barbeque hosted by and held at Sanford Westbrook Medical Center and the annual Evening of Praise held at the Westbrook Community Center.

Heritage House Museum

Three events have become staples on Friday afternoon and evening of Fun Days. The annual Health Care Foundation three-person golf scramble is held at Rolling Hills Golf Course during the afternoon. Then Miss Westbrook will be crowned during the evening pageant at the school’s auditorium followed by a street dance, which this year will be held under the tent in the City Park featuring Decadence Inc. Saturday is jam-packed with food, fun and games almost entirely in the City Park. Traditional fare for Saturday’s activities include a noon Whopper Feed along with several other food vendors. Patrons can also expect to find everything from snow cones to mini doughnuts and nachos. A beer garden will also be available at City Park. The games include a sand volleyball tournament, Junior Olympics and a pedal tractor pull and bouncy houses for the youngsters, Bingo is available for all ages. The grand parade at 4 p.m., highlights Saturday’s fun, which also includes Crazy Days at Main Street businesses, a community-wide rummage sale, open swimming at the city pool. A concert will be held under the tent in the City Park Saturday evening. Among Sunday’s activities is the annual community worship service and a pancake breakfast served by the fire department at the Westbrook Community Center. Bingo will begin at 1 p.m.

T

hirty years before Westbrook was settled, pioneers established a nearby village known as Blue Eagle. When the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railroad came to plot out a town site, it got into a dispute with a landowner. As a result, a new town was platted. Westbrook’s 1900 depot reflects and preserves the history of the community. Seven years after the line was abandoned in 1976, local editor and railroad buff Tom Merchant spearheaded a volunteer project that restored the depot to its present condition. It has been named Westbrook Heritage House Museum.

Relay for Life Friday, July 22

T

he 18th annual Cottonwood County Relay For Life returns to the scenic and peaceful location of Tegels Park along the the shores of Cottonwood Lake in northeast Windom in 2016. In what has become a staple among summer events in Cottonwood County, the annual American Cancer Society fundraiser is an opportunity to honor those who are winning their battles against cancer while remembering those who have lost their fight. For the seventh straight year, the Relay For Life committee will hold a five-hour event, a format that has been well-received by teams and guests, increasing participation and donations of time and funds. The Opening Ceremony is set for about 7 p.m., with the Closing Ceremony wrapping up the event at midnight. Cottonwood County Relay For Life typically follows a similar format from year to year with changes only to schedule and activities. The committee and teams devote much of the morning and early afternoon to setting up

The original 1926 Storden School with its 1950 and 1956 additions was purchased by the City of Storden in 1998. It has since been sold to Storden resident John Croatt. It is the site for auctions and special events.

In addition, residents enjoy one of the best soft-water lakes in the area, which is also one of the county’s top fishing lakes.

he Community of Storden turns 109 this year. It has a strong tradition of being a friendly and clean community.

One of the most attractive aspects of this community is its spacious city park, complete with trees, grassy areas and playground equipment.

ingham Lake is a small but growing community along Highway 60.

It is home to about 70 residential units, but has seen vast economic development in recent years with the additions of Poet Biorefining and Miller-Sellner Equipment.

The 1866 Hystad Cabin was moved into Storden in July 1996. The cabin, named after Gerhard Hystad who was born in it in 1898, is a gift from Sunburg, a community 100 miles north of Storden. The cabin may be viewed by the public.

ne of the region’s most photographed buildings is the Historic Cottonwood County Courthouse. The Courthouse, which is included in the National Historic Register, turns 111 this year. It was built in 1904 by J.B. Nelson of North Mankato at a bid of $59,949. Among its many features are the unusual Corinthian style marble columns. After it was completed, additional funds were spent on architectural details around windows, interior decorations and a 12-foot, bronze/copper-plated statue of the Greek goddess of justice, which stands proudly atop the Courthouse dome. Inside are four murals in the rotunda that were restored in 1975-1976 representing government, justice, freedom of the press and freedom of religion. The corner emblems of the dome are called history, government, art and science. Since 1986 several remodeling projects were undertaken, including an upgrade of the commissioners’ room in 2007.

Cottonwood County Public Lands

T

he U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) manage nearly 30 tracts totaling more than 11,000 acres of wildlife habitat in Cottonwood County. The FWS tracts are known as Waterfowl Production Areas, DNR tracts are known as Wildlife Management Areas and one DNR tract is known as a Scientific and Natural Area. The DNR tracts managed by the Wildlife Divisions are prairie grassland and wetland habitats ranging in size from 17 to over 400 acres. The exceptions are the Talcot Lake WMA, which is over 4,000 acres, and the Expandere WMA which is 850 acres, both located west of Windom. These areas are open to public use with certain restrictions, except portions of the Talcot Lake WMA which are closed to public use.

Lake are paved and handicapped-accessible. The Wings on the Prairie Discovery Center is a designated Prairie Passage site. Education is another key facet of FWS. The Wings on the Prairie Discovery Center on the Wolf Lake WPA provides students, as well as adults, a great location to learn about the environment. There is a small book sales area. The Wolf Lake WPA is comprised of restored wetlands, a shallow prairie lake, native prairie and oak savanna. Each of the ecosystems supports a different variety of wildlife and plant species and students receive hands-on experience while visiting the center. The DNR building (below) is located nearby on County Road 26. For more information, or to obtain a map to locate WMAs and WPAs call the numbers listed below.

There is also one newer DNR tract managed by the Ecological Services Division called the Rock Ridge Scientific and Natural Area (SNA). SNA’s are acquired to preserve places of ecological significance that contain rare plant and animal species, geologic formations and natural communities like remnant native prairies. All SNA’s are open to the public for nature observation, and educational and scientific research purposes. The FWS Visitor’s Center (above), located on County Road 17, is open to the public Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Interpretation is an important aspect of what the FWS provides. Adjacent to the interpretive center on the Wolf Lake WPA is a threequarter-mile interpretive walking trail complete with three observation decks, interpretive reading rail points, a floating dock, foot bridge, four bench nodes and a photo blind. Cottonwood County Snowmobile Trails

T

hese trails are possible only through the kindness of farmers and landowners giving permission to cross their property. The sincere dedication of members, sponsoring snowmobile clubs and local, county and state officials make these trails possible. For more club information, go to: www.bigbendsnowriders.org. Courtesy on the trails is appreciated. When possible, take the time to greet a landowner. Have a good time snowmobiling in Cottonwood County. For your safety and enjoyment, please observe the following rules when on Cottonwood County’s snow trails:

• These trails are for snowmobilers. Four-wheel drive vehicles are prohibited. • These rules are enforced by the Cottonwood County Sheriff ’s Dept. If violations of these rules are observed, please notify the sheriff ’s department.

You have permission to ride the marked trails only. • Do not remove or destroy any trail signs. • Do not damage any trees, shrubs, etc. • Do not litter. • Take special care when crossing roadways and going through fenced areas. • Remember lakes are never completely safe due to springs, creeks and channels eroding the ice away from the underside. Stay close to shoreline whenever possible. • Remember all snowmobilers are judged by the actions of a few. Please do not cause any disturbances or damage to any property. • Where trails follow roads, obey all traffic laws and regulations. Keep to the right, dim lights, etc. • Snowmobilers are prohibited from operating on certain public streets in many towns. When in these areas, watch for marked streets or check with city officials.

stablished in 1901 (formerly the Old Settlers Association), the Cottonwood County Historical Society has occupied the old Co-Op Oil Association building since 1973. The Society’s mission is to collect, preserve and disseminate the history of the county. The museum includes the Remick Gallery, Exhibit Hall and expanded research library. The Remick Gallery is a changing art gallery showcasing local and regional artists along with thematic shows. In April, county students showcase art work of varied mediums in the annual “Cottonwood County Student Art Show.” The summer exhibit, entitled “Facets of Inner Strength,” features local artist Jolene Wirkus. As a local psychologist, Wirkus uses art to help clients and for her own self expression. The exhibit runs from May 1 to Sept. 3. The fall exhibit features three women artists — Anita Skow, Marget Floyd and Mary Christenson. Their exhibit, entitled “The Artful Life,” opens Sept. 18 and will include a variety of mediums and themes, including portraits, still life paintings and outdoor landscapes. The show runs through Nov. 19. During December, the gallery hosts its annual Festival of Trees display with over 15 Christmas trees decorated by local individuals, organizations and businesses. The Exhibit Hall has 3,000 square feet of space dedicated to the interpretation of the county’s rich history, from pre-European settlement to the early 20th century. A portion of the exhibit is completed, giving visitors an opportunity to spend time learning about the towns of the county and places of interest. See artifacts of the Plains Indian before visiting an immigrant log cabin with Norwegian heritage. Contrast their lifestyle to the English Yankee’s Victorian Parlor of the 1890s. Then, go to the head of the class at the one-room rural school.

A database will soon be available listing veterans of the county. Guests also may step back in time to see a small chapel, general store/post office and farm workshop. The expanded research library contains copies of early county photographs, plat books, directories, genealogy records, tax records and rural school histories. Microfilm copies of the county newspapers and census records can be read on the micro-film reader-printer. The historical society also has expanded its gift shop which is located in the lobby of the museum. It offers a variety of books, crocks and other items that focus on Cottonwood County history as well as Minnesota history. Before departing, sit a spell on the new bench (below) outside the museum. This area north of the museum has a county map in the pavers with the town and township names visible. The new banners promote the museum and the current exhibit in the Remick Art Gallery.

n glacier-scarred bedrock rising from Southwest Minnesota’s prairie grasses, the Jeffers Petroglyphs historic site protects thousands of ancient rock carvings, or “petroglyphs.” This is a sacred place, one that has been used by many American Indian tribes over a period of 7,000 years. For their descendants, it is a place to seek communion with the spirits, find directions left by travelers and learn from elders who teach through the stories pictured on the rock. You can search the rock outcroppings for carvings of buffalo, turtles, thunderbirds and humans, which illustrate the rich and sophisticated cultures that have inhabited this area. Follow the trails through restored and virgin prairies teeming with cactus, blossoming flowers and rare plants. In the visitor center, you can view a video presentation about the site and exhibits about American Indian culture and prairie ecology. Interpreters and hands-on activities help tell the story of the carvings and the prairie. he Business, Arts & Recreation Center, more commonly referred to as “BARC,” is a familiar Windom landmark with a rich history in the community. Formerly known as Windom High School and Area Central School, the building has touched the lives of children and their families from Windom’s neighborhoods to the surrounding region. It is more than a building — it is a legacy! In 2002, the dream of local citizens became a reality. This 76,000 square foot former school building was saved from demolition and became BARC. In 14 years of operation, it has provided unique opportunities to the community. Its halls not only echo the past, but look to the future. As a nonprofit 501c3 organization, BARC’s mission is to develop and sustain a positive environment for the arts, education, recreation and business. BARC prides itself on being community responsive! To that end, BARC offers: •  A 650-seat performing arts auditorium. •  Full and half gymnasium with bleachers. •  An art gallery, featuring local artists. •  A book and puzzle exchange library. •  VHS and DVD movie library. •  Listening library featuring books on tape/CD, music CDs. •  Hall walking. •  Room rentals for gatherings from 2 to 600 or more. •  Technology and conference rooms. •  Long-term leasing and short-term rental. •  Wi-Fi. BARC is also the host site for the Nutrution Assistance Program the second Thursday of each month.

An additional sheet of ice measuring 165x45 is also available. This ice can be used for group skating, hockey, figure skaters, broom ball and a variety of other activities. T

he Windom Public Library, established in 1883, houses a collection of 30,000 volumes, 80 magazines and four newspaper subscriptions, as well as audio books, videos and DVDs ranging from children’s, action, comedy and drama to the newest releases. The library also has 11 PCs available to patrons with Internet access available. The children’s library includes enhanced services and a larger story time area. As a member of the Plum Creek system, an alliance of independent libraries in Southwestern Minnesota that share resources and programs, the library is able to offer an expanded list of ebooks as well as hard cover books and paperbacks. Since 1989, the library services have been free to all Cottonwood County residents, which includes a summer reading program for children and a winter reading program for adults. Located on the southwest corner of the Square, the former First National Bank, built in 1911, has been home to the library since 1985. The building of Bedford stone, marble pillars and granite walls was renovated by community volunteers to match, as closely as possible, the original colors of the bank’s decor. A large mural on the north wall of the main room, which was painted by Roy F. Olson in the late 1940s, features an early settler plowing with his oxen. The Friends of the Library, a group of volunteers that works to benefit the library and the community, also provided funding in 2012 for the purchase of new stacks (see photo), which replaced stacks that were more than 40 years old.

T

he Windom Skateboard Park was constructed in 2003 after months of fund-raising by a group of local teens. A large grant from the Remick Foundation, as well as donations from various businesses and organizations, helped make the park a reality. The park features a number of ramps, jumps and obstacles designed to challenge skateboarders and stunt bicycle riders of all skill levels. The park is open for use year-round (unless covered by snow). Lights for the park are on a timer, and turn off at 10 p.m., when the park closes. The park is open at 6 a.m. daily. Use of the park is free of charge.

Windom has a challenging eighteen-hole disc golf course, located at Mayflower Park.

Tennis Courts Three tennis courts, with lights provided at no cost, are located in Witt Park at 5th Ave. and 10th St.

T

he Windom tennis courts have been a staple in Windom for more than 30 years and continue to get seasonal use. The three courts received a $12,000 facelift in July 2008 when they were acid-etched to remove contaminants, then hydroblasted to clean the surface and remove loose materials. After an acrylic primer was put down, two coats of sandmix blue covering, or "U.S. Open Blue," was put down followed by two coats of white playing lines. The courts are in top condition and cater to tennis players of all ages.

N

estled in the scenic prairie west of Westbrook, Rolling Hills Golf Club is a course that lives up to its name. The gently-rolling terrain, coupled with trees, sand traps and water hazards, can challenge golfers of any skill level while still being gentle enough to walk comfortably. Playing the course will challenge every club in the bag and will test a golfer’s daring, skill and smarts. Rolling Hills is a classic “risk/reward” golf course, where the daring golfer will either be rewarded with lower scores if a bold shot is accurate or punished by hazards or tough lies if a risky shot goes awry. And every day can bring a new challenge, depending on speed and direction of the typical Southwest Minnesota winds — further putting each and every club in the bag to the test. The course is open to the public daily, excluding Tuesday Ladies’ League Day and Wednesday Men’s League Day. League play at the course begins in May. Contact the clubhouse to see if tee times are needed on a particular day. Cart rentals are also available. In addition to the weekly Ladies’ and Men’s Leagues, Rolling Hills also hosts numerous tournaments throughout the season. Among the highlights are the annual Two-Bar Tournament and the Healthcare Scramble in June, the Member-Guest Tournament in July and the Parent-Relative/Child Tournament in August. Rolling Hills also hosts an annual Youth Open as well as Ladies’ and Men’s Club Championships. Rolling Hills features the Hole 19 Restaurant in the clubhouse, which is open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. after Mother’s Day. The clubhouse is also available to host parties and class reunions.

Economic Development Authority of Windom AN AERIAL VIEW of North Windom Industrial Park shows the significant changes that occurred in 2015. The changes include the start of construction by Ryan Companies on the The Toro Company’s new $7 million warehouse. The local manufacturing plant began moving its warehouse operations into the building in February 2016.

I

n 2015, the Windom Economic Development Authority had opportunities to work with numerous businesses — both large and small — on plans for property acquisition and expansion of their businesses. Lots in the North Windom Industrial Park were sold to Cheley Smith, who has constructed Highway 71 Mini Storage, and Ryan Companies, which constructed the new 126,000-square-foot warehouse for The Toro Company. The EDA also assisted Jed and Cynthia Knutson with their plans for Windom Towing and helped Fast Manufacturing with its application to the Department of Employment and Economic Development for an award in the Job Creation Fund Program. Through a grant from the Minnesota DEED, the last segment of Commerce Boulevard in NWIP and adjacent utilities were installed which provide access and utility service for the new Toro warehouse. Aaron Backman successfully led the EDA in many important projects during his seven-year tenure as executive director of the EDA. Although he has now moved on to a new opportunity in his career, these are exciting times as the EDA looks forward in its search for a new director.

THE NEW $7 MILLION, state-of-the-art warehouse for The Toro Company in Windom is located in the northeast corner of North Windom Industrial Park. The construction of the warehouse solidifies Toro’s presence in the community.

In 2016, the EDA has many opportunities, including: •  Prospective lot sales in NWIP. •  Expansion of the NWIP to provide additional lots for sale. •  Work with the local school district on a new residential housing subdivision. •  Potential sale of property to a developer for a new hotel. •  Renewed interest in the EDA’s available lots in River

Bluff Estates. •  Reuse of the EDA’s spec building. •  Continuation of the EDA’s research into a potential data center for Windom. •  Technical assistance to the new owners of Prime Pork during their renovation and reopening of a meat processing facility in Windom.
