Storden 

The Community of Storden turns 108 this year. It has a strong tradition of being a friendly and clean community.

One of the most attractive aspects of this community is its spacious city park, complete with trees, grassy areas and playground equipment. The original 1926 Storden School with its 1950 and 1956 additions was purchased by the City of Storden in 1998. It has since been sold to Storden resident John Croatt. It is the site for auctions and special events. The 1866 Hystad Cabin was moved into Storden in July 1996. The cabin, named after Gerhard Hystad who was born in it in 1898, is a gift from Sunburg, a community 100 miles north of Storden. The cabin may be viewed by the public.

Bingham Lake



Bingham Lake is a small but growing community along Highway 60.

It is home to about 70 residential units, but has seen vast economic development in recent years with the additions of Poet Biorefining and Miller-Sellner Equipment. In addition, residents enjoy one of the best soft-water lakes in the area, which is also one of the county’s top fishing lakes.

Delft



The tiny community of Delft is located in the center of Cottonwood County. Delft has become a hot spot for local music lovers, as the Carson Meeting House, located at the former Carson Mennonite Church, plays host to the Prairie Wind Folk Music and Bluegrass Association, which features several concerts each year.

Celebrations

Westbrook Fun Days Thursday, June 26 thru Sunday, June 29

The 2014 Fun Days will once again deliver a variety of fun events, great food and excellent opportunities to socialize, offering area residents plenty of reasons to spend the weekend in Westbrook.



Fun Days gets its start on Thursday evening with a community barbeque and the annual Evening of Praise held at the Westbrook Community Center. Three events have become staples on Friday afternoon and evening of Fun Days. The annual Health Care Foundation three-person golf scramble is held at Rolling Hills Golf Course during the afternoon. Then Miss Westbrook will be crowned during the evening pageant at the school’s auditorium followed by a street dance, which this year will be held at the Westbrook VFW on Main Street featuring the band Decadence Inc.

served by the Westbrook Women’s Club. Patrons can also expect to find everything from snow cones to mini doughnuts and nachos. The games include a sand volleyball tournament, Junior Olympics and a pedal tractor pull for the youngsters, Bingo for all ages and a Bean Bag Tournament following the parade. The grand parade at 4 p.m., is the highlight of Saturday’s fun, which also includes Crazy Days at Main Street businesses, a community-wide rummage sale, open swimming at the city pool and fireworks at dusk.

Saturday is jam-packed with food, fun and games almost entirely in the City Park.

Among Sunday’s activities is the annual community worship service and a French toast breakfast served by the fire department at the Westbrook Community Center.

Traditional fare for Saturday’s activities include a noon Whopper Feed and pulled pork sandwiches

There’s something “fun” for every age when Westbrook gets together for its annual summer celebration.

Heritage House Museum Thirty years before Westbrook was settled, pioneers established a nearby village known as Blue Eagle. When the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railroad came to plot out a town site, it got into a dispute with a landowner. As a result, a new town was platted.



Located in Westbrook, just off Hwy. 30. Open Sunday afternoons Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Westbrook’s 1900 depot reflects and preserves the history of the community. Seven years after the line was abandoned in 1976, local editor and railroad buff Tom Merchant spearheaded a volunteer project that restored the depot to its present condition. It has been named Westbrook Heritage House Museum.

Relay for Life

Friday, July 25

The 16th annual Cottonwood County Relay For Life returns to the scenic and peaceful location of Tegels Park along the the shores of Cottonwood Lake in northeast Windom again in 2014.

In what has become a staple among summer events in Cottonwood County, the annual American Cancer Society fund-raiser is an opportunity to honor those who are winning their battles against cancer while remembering those who have lost their fight. For the fifth straight year, the Relay For Life committee will hold a five-hour event, a change from the 12-hour, overnight format the Relay employed during its first 11 years. The format has been wellreceived by teams and guests, increasing participation and donations of time and funds. The Opening Ceremony will get things going at about 7 p.m., and the Closing Ceremony wraps up the event at midnight.

Cottonwood County Relay For Life typically follows a similar format from year to year with changes only to schedule and activities. The committe and teams devote much of the morning and early afternoon to setting up for the evening event with Survivor registration getting the event rolling in mid-afternoon. A meal is always included in the early evening activities with the Opening Ceremony, usually starting around 7 p.m., officially getting the Relay out of the blocks. The Opening Ceremony also includes recognition of honorary chairpersons and a Survivor’s Celebration lap followed by team laps over the next five hours. The highlight of the evening is lighting of the luminaria lined pathway which always is one of the event’s 1873 Lysgard Farmhouse solemn and touching moments of the Relay. Visit 1902 Delafield Church Working Grist Mill The event concludes with the Closing Ceremony at midnight. Last year, the county Relay enjoyed another Log Cabin and Stockade strong survivor attendance of 112 registered cancer survivors and most funds raised ever with $76,215. Blacksmith Shop

Buil t in 1904

Cottonwood County Courthouse One of the region’s most photographed buildings is the Historic Cottonwood County Courthouse. The Courthouse, which is included in the National Historic Registry, turns 109 this year.



It was built in 1904 by J.B. Nelson of North Mankato at a bid of $59,949. Among its many features are the unusual Corinthian style marble columns. After it was completed, additional funds were spent on architectural details around windows, interior decorations and a 12foot, bronze/copper-plated statue of the Greek goddess of justice, which stands proudly atop the Courthouse dome. Inside are four murals in the rotunda that were restored in 1975-1976 represent government, justice, freedom of the press and freedom of religion. The corner emblems of the dome are called history, government, art and science. Since 1986 several remodeling projects were undertaken, including an upgrade of the commissioners’ room in 2007.

Public Lands

These areas are open to public use with certain restrictions, except portions of the Talcot Lake WMA which are closed to public use. There is also one newer DNR tract managed by the Ecological Services Division called the Rock Ridge Scientific and Natural Area (SNA). SNA’s are acquired to preserve places of ecological significance that contain rare plant and animal species, geologic formations and natural communities like remnant native prairies. All SNA’s are open to the public for nature observation, and educational and scientific research purposes.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) manage nearly 30 tracts totaling more than 10,000 acres of wildlife habitat in Cottonwood County.



The FWS tracts are known as Waterfowl Production Areas, DNR tracts are known as Wildlife Management Areas and one DNR tract is known as a Scientific and Natural Area. The DNR tracts managed by the Wildlife Divisions are prairie grassland and wetland habitats ranging in size from 17 to over 400 acres. The exceptions are the Talcot Lake WMA, which is over 4,000 acres, and the Expandere WMA which is 850 acres, both located west of Windom.

The FWS Visitor’s Center (above), located on County Road 17, is open to the public Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Interpretation is an important aspect of what the FWS provides. Adjacent to the interpretive center on the Wolf Lake WPA is a new three-quarter-mile interpretive walking trail complete with three observation decks, interpretive reading rail points, a floating dock, foot bridge, four bench nodes and a photo blind. The walking trails at Wolf Lake are paved and handicapped-accessible. The Wings on the Discovery Center is a designated Prairie Passage site. Education is another key facet of FWS. The Wings on the Prairie Discovery Center on the Wolf Lake WPA provides students, as well as adults, a great location to learn about the environment. There is a small book sales area. The Wolf Lake WPA is comprised of restored wetlands, a shallow prairie lake, native prairie and oak savanna. Each of the ecosystems supports a different variety of wildlife and plant species and students receive hands-on experience while visiting the center. The DNR building (left photo) is located nearby on County Road 26. For more information, or to obtain a map to locate WMAs and WPAs call the numbers listed below.

Snowmobiling

These trails are possible only through the kindness of farmers and landowners giving permission to cross their property. The sincere dedication of members, sponsoring snowmobile clubs and local, county and state officials make these trails possible.



Courtesy on the trails is appreciated. When possible, take the time to greet a landowner. Have a good time snowmobiling in Cottonwood County. For your safety and enjoyment, please observe the following rules when on Cottonwood County’s snow trails: • Do not wander off trails. You have permission to ride the marked trails only. Contact person for trail maps for Big Bend Snow Riders Club is Kevin Moulder, 507-628-4847.

• Do not remove or destroy any trail signs. • Do not damage any trees, shrubs, etc. • Do not litter. • Take special care when crossing roadways and going through fenced areas. • Remember lakes are never completely safe due to springs, creeks and channels eroding the ice away from the underside. Stay close to shoreline whenever possible. • Remember all snowmobilers are judged by the actions of a few. Please do not cause any disturbances or damage to any property. • Where trails follow public roads, obey all traffic laws and regulations. Keep to the right, dim lights, etc. • Snowmobilers are prohibited from operating on certain public streets in many towns. When in these areas, watch for marked streets or check with city officials. • These trails are for snowmobilers. Four-wheel drive vehicles are prohibited. • These rules are enforced by the Cottonwood County Sheriff ’s Dept. If violations of these rules are observed, please notify the sheriff ’s department.

Historical Society

Located at 812 4th Ave., Windom.

Phone 507-831-1134.

No admission charged for the museum. Fee of $2 to use the research library. Hours: Monday thru Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Established in 1901 (formerly the Old Settlers Association), the Cottonwood County Historical Society has occupied the old Co-Op Oil Association building since 1973. The Society’s mission is to collect, preserve and disseminate the history of the county. The museum includes the Remick Gallery, Exhibit Hall and expanded research library.



The Remick Gallery is a changing art gallery showcasing local and regional artists along with thematic shows. In April, county students showcase their art work of varied mediums in the annual “Cottonwood County Student Art Show.” The summer exhibit is tentatively planned to be a show titled “Horses of Many Colors” by Deborah Meyer. The artist is a graduate of Windom High School who now resides in California. Over 15 pieces of art work will be displayed featuring numerous equestrian images with watercolor as her medium. The exhibit runs from May 4 through Aug. 30. Opening Sept. 14 is an exhibit by Nan Karr Kaufenberg, an artist from Redwood Falls, titled “Rural Images.” Her linoleum block prints tinted with watercolor showcase her love of our rural landscape. This exhibit runs through Nov. 22. In December, the gallery hosts the Festival of Trees with over 15 Christmas trees decorated by local individuals, organizations and businesses. The Exhibit Hall has 3,000 square feet of space dedicated to the interpretation of the county’s rich history, from preEuropean settlement to the early 20th century. A portion of the exhibit is completed, giving visitors an opportunity to spend time learning about the towns of the county and places of interest. See artifacts of the Plains Indian before visiting an immigrant log cabin with Norwegian heritage. Contrast their lifestyle to the English Yankee’s Victorian Parlor of the 1890s. Then, go to the head of the class at the one-room rural school. Enjoy the contrast of an early 1940s kitchen prior to and after electricity. Guests also will step back in time to see a small chapel, general store/post office and farm workshop. One area of Exhibit Hall that continues to receive an upgrade during 2014 is the military exhibit. The historical

24

society received a $19,000 grant from the Minnesota Historical Society for software design and hardware purchases for collecting and making accessible the names of Cottonwood County veterans who served in all branches of the Armed Forces. The exhibit also will be enhanced with several visual graphics and artifacts. The expanded research library contains copies of early county photographs, plat books, directories, genealogy records, tax records and rural school histories. Microfilm copies of the county newspapers and census records can be read on the micro-film reader-printer. The historical society also has expanded its gift shop (below) which is located in the lobby of the museum. It offers a variety of books, crocks and other items that focus on Cottonwood County history as well as Minnesota history.

Jeffers Petroglyphs

Open May 24 to Labor Day Daily educational programs will be held at 2 p.m. throughout the season. Each week a different program exploring American Indian culture, prairie ecology or the scientists who study them will be featured. Guided tours are offered daily at 10:30 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. On glacier-scarred bedrock rising from Southwest Minnesota’s prairie grasses, the Jeffers Petroglyphs historic site protects thousands of ancient rock carvings, or “petroglyphs.” This is a sacred place, one that has been used by many American Indian tribes over a period of 7,000 years. For their descendants, it is a place to seek communion with the spirits, find directions left by travelers and learn from elders who teach through the stories pictured on the rock.



You can search the rock outcroppings for carvings of buffalo, turtles, thunderbirds and humans, which illustrate the rich and sophisticated cultures that have inhabited this area. Follow the trails through restored and virgin prairies teeming with cactus, blossoming flowers and rare plants. In the visitor center, you can view a multi-media presentation about the site and exhibits about American Indian culture and prairie ecology. Interpreters and hands-on activities help tell the story of the carvings and the prairie.

HOURS: Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sundays: 12 to 5 p.m.; Saturdays in September: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tours: Open for tours, by advance reservation, for groups of 10 or more. The library and classrooms may be rented and used for organizational meetings, classes, parties, reunions and more. With newly renovated rooms available, BARC provides the area with both short-term and long-term rental opportunities. It also offers a variety of technological services, including free Wi-Fi access, as well as a variety of education classes which focus on the arts and recreation. Located on the southwestern corner of the Square, the former First National Bank, built in 1911, has been home to the library since 1985. The building of Bedford stone, marble pillars and granite walls was renovated by community volunteers to as closely match as possible the original colors of the bank’s decor. A large mural on the north wall of the main room, which was painted by Roy F. Olson in the late 1940s, features an early settler plowing with his oxen. The Friends of the Library, a group of volunteers, sponsors cultural enhancement programs and also provided funding in February 2012 for the purchase of new stacks (right photo), which replaced stacks that were more than 40 years old.

Sun Valley Gun Club Located 7 miles NW of the Windom Country Club on River Road (County Road 13). A Game and Fish membership is required to use the range one time. For return visits, a Gun Club membership is required.

Tennis Courts Three tennis courts, with lights provided at no cost, are located in Witt Park at 5th Ave. & 10th St. The Windom tennis courts have been a staple in Windom for more than 30 years and continue to get seasonal use. The three courts received a $12,000 facelift in July 2008 when they were acidetched to remove contaminants, then hydroblasted to clean the surface and remove loose materials. After an acrylic primer was put down, two coats of sandmix blue covering, or "U.S. Open Blue," was put down followed by two coats of white playing lines.



The courts are in top condition and cater to tennis players of all ages.

Founded in 1966, the Sun Valley Gun Club is NW of Windom. The club is known for its many trap-shooting activities but also has an NRA-approved rifle range and pistol range. Several regular shooters at the club have won state and national awards. Trap-shooting leagues are held every Tuesday night (AprilSeptember) from 7 to 10 p.m.

Skateboard Park Located near Kastle Kingdom and Recreation Area in Windom. The Windom Skateboard Park was constructed in 2003 after months of fund-raising by a group of local teens. A large grant from the Remick Foundation, as well as donations from various businesses and organizations, helped make the park a reality.



The park features a number of ramps, jumps and obstacles designed to challenge skateboarders and stunt bicycle riders of all skill levels. The park is open for use year-round (unless covered by snow). Lights for the park are on a timer, and turn off at 10 p.m., when the park closes. The park is open at 6 a.m. daily. Nestled in the scenic prairie west of Westbrook, Rolling Hills Golf Club is a course that lives up to its name. The gently-rolling terrain, coupled with trees, sand traps and water hazards, can challenge golfers of any skill level while still being gentle enough to walk comfortably.



Playing the course will challenge every club in the bag and will test a golfer’s daring, skill and smarts. Rolling Hills is a classic “risk/reward” golf course, where the daring golfer will either be rewarded with lower scores if a bold shot is accurate or punished by hazards or tough lies if a risky shot goes awry. And every day can bring a new challenge, depending on speed and direction of the typical Southwest Minnesota winds — further putting each and every club in the bag to the test. The course is open to the public daily, excluding Tuesday Ladies’ League Day and Wednesday Men’s League Day. League play at the course begins in May. Contact the clubhouse to see if tee times are needed on a particular day. Cart rentals are also available. New members can purchase memberships at a discounted rate. In addition to the weekly Ladies’ and Men’s Leagues, Rolling Hills also hosts numerous tournaments throughout the season. Among the highlights are the annual TwoBar Tournament and the Healthcare Scramble in June, the Member-Guest Tournament in July and the ParentRelative/Child Tournament in August. Rolling Hills also hosts an annual Youth Open and ends the summer with the Ladies’ and Men’s Club Championships. In addition to a top-notch course, Rolling Hills features the Hole 19 Restaurant in the clubhouse, which is open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. after Mother’s Day. The clubhouse is also available to host parties and class reunions.

Writing the next chapter in renewable energy. POET Biorefining – Bingham Lake pays top prices for your corn.

Highway 60, Bingham Lake. Phone 507-831-0063. Sixteen years ago, the partnership of Southwest Minnesota Agrifuels Cooperative (SMAC) and Broin Enterprises, Inc. constructed a corn grain ethanol facility, which is now known as POET Biorefining - Bingham Lake.



Each year this facility utilizes 12 million bushels of corn from area farmers to produce 35 million gallons of ethanol, 100,000 tons of Dakota Gold DDGS and 50,000 tons of liquid CO2. The plant proudly employs 40 people with an annual payroll of $1.9 million.

Windom's state-of-the-art telecommunications system, known as "Windomnet," began operations in April of 2005.

The project, which emerged from six years of research and a $9.7 million bond sale, resulted in a system that delivers fiber-optics to every residence and business in the community. It is believed to be the largest fiberoptics deployment in Minnesota. Windom residents and businesses now have a cityowned system that offers: • Multiple internet speeds — dial-up; "Ultra High Speed Internet Lite" (downloads 15 times faster than dial-up); "High-Speed Internet Basic"; plus speeds of up to 100 megabits for businesses and other special circumstances. • Enhanced cable TV services including High Definition TV, digital TV and more than 125 cable channel options, which include a variety of sports, movie and music packages. • A state-of-the-art municipal telephone system that offers the best in customized business-related telephone and data packages. Plus the following residential calling features: voice mail, call waiting, speed dialing, selective call rejection, caller ID, call forwarding, sim ring and busy call transfer. For more information regarding Windomnet go to: www. windomnet.com or call 507-832-8000.

Windom Economic Development Authority

Under the leadership of Executive Director Aaron Backman, Windom's Economic Development Authority actively promotes economic growth and vitality in the Windom area.



Here are the EDA's strategic goals for 2014: •  Strategic Goal 1: Recruit at least one new restaurant to locate or expand into the City of Windom, preferably along the City’s main commercial corridor, U.S. Highway 71/State Highway 60, or in the Downtown Area. •  Strategic Goal 2: Continue planning and implementation of Phase II of the North Windom Industrial Park Infrastructure (NWIP) Project and obtain Shovel-Ready Site Certification from the State of Minnesota for the new industrial park. •  Strategic Goal 3: Undertake a comprehensive housing study of the City of Windom and encourage developers to evaluate the feasibility of construction of additional housing units for all demographic groups in the community, including senior citizens and individuals who do not fall within the income guidelines for leasing of existing rental property. •  Strategic Goal 4: Collaborate with existing local manufacturing, distribution and other commercial businesses to expand/remain within the City of Windom. •  Strategic Goal 5: Collaborate with government and local organizations to promote the community as a whole. The EDA offers commercial and light industrial lots for development. For example, the EDA has land available in its North Windom Industrial Park located a mile north of Windom along Highway 71. The 80acre, light industrial park has nine lots available for manufacturing, truck terminals, distribution centers, etc. In River Bluff Estates, a subdivision located in southwest Windom, the EDA offers seven lots for residential construction.

IN 2013, THE EDA led an effort to install new directional signs along Highway 60-71 in Windom. The goal of these signs is to help visiting motorists more easily navigate the community and find specific destinations. A Remick Foundation grant helped make the new directional signs a reality.
