Hearst Center instructors are available to do face painting and art activities for community and corporate events. Collecting Artwork:
Student artwork can be picked up for a full four weeks following the last day of class. Artwork left at the Hearst Center more than four weeks after the class ends will be recycled.
Cancellations:
Don’t wait! We encourage you to register yourself and your family early to ensure a reservation in classes and workshops. Programs not meeting the minimum requirement one week before the start date are subject to cancellation and registered participants are notified. Unless otherwise indicated, minimum enrollment for children’s classes is three and the minimum enrollment for adults’ classes is five. Registration for a program is accepted until the day that program begins if it is not cancelled. If you must cancel or change your registration: • Please call the front desk at 319.273.8641. • A handling fee of $10 for all refunds applies. • No fee is charged if a course is canceled by the Hearst Center due to low enrollment. • No fee is charged if a participant transfers to another class when the request is made at least seven days before the class begins. • A 50% refund is issued for cancellations made between one and six days before the course begins. • Students do not receive a refund if they cancel or change on the day the course starts or after it begins.

ART JOURNALING Create your own bound journal and learn a variety of techniques to fill the pages, by creating interesting backgrounds, applying images, and informal lettering styles. Your unique book becomes a playground for self-expression, a place to test new art materials, and a tool to record ideas. All skill levels welcome. PAINT YOUR WAY Students of various skill levels grow in their understanding of basic acrylic painting techniques by working on projects of their choice. Instructors provide individualized guidance for each student’s particular interest in a casual and supportive studio atmosphere. WHEEL THROWING I Develop and hone your basic skills of throwing pottery on the wheel to create personal items like cups, mugs, bowls, and plates. Once finished with glaze, they can be used in the microwave, oven, and dishwasher. Demonstrations and discussions on form/function take place throughout the class. DRAWING 101 Have you always wanted to draw, but been afraid to actually put pencil to paper? This class is perfect for the beginning or intermediate drawing student looking to learn how to sketch, shade, and more. SLAB STYLE HAND BUILDING Explore the use of slab-building to create a 3-D canvas for detailed surfaces. Slips and underglaze will be used in a precise manner to enhance simple forms and excite the viewer. This class is ideal for those with experience in drawing and painting, however, all are welcome! Time: 6:30–8:30 pm Location: John Adams Ceramics Lab Instructor: Kyle Bates Fee: $50 ($45) + $25 clay lab fee • Limit 8 GROUP GUITAR Perfect for beginning and intermediate acoustic guitar players, this class will guide students in a group setting on basic chords, riffs, and pieces for acoustic guitar. Learn from a local musician who has taught students of all ages and abilities. Students need to bring their own guitars. Students finish this class with their own weaving project as well as developed weaving skills and knowledge. GUIDED HAND BUILDING STUDIO Learn skills and techniques to create abstract and/ or anatomical ceramic forms. The focus will be on the processes used to create a variety of pieces. This studio class is best suited for beginners and intermediate students although all levels welcome.
