Barmuda and Phantom Company Reinvestor Award
East Viking Plaza is a 30-acre development in southern Cedar Falls. This area hosts Target’s retail store and a new 10,000 square foot commercial power center. The Plaza has the potential to provide 100,000 square feet of new development.
Phantom Park is home to Reel Deal Holdings, L.L.C., managed by Darin Beck. When the facility on Roosevelt flooded, portions of the Reel Deal operations relocated piecemeal to several locations in the Cedar Valley. New facilities at Technology Parkway and Chancellor Drive, are now home for Barmuda Corporation, Barmuda Distribution, Phantom EFX, Phantom Distribution, and T8 Design.
UNI Multimodal Transportation Center Development Partner Award Located on 23rd Street, just east of Campbell Hall, this three-level facility provides 350 additional parking spaces and easier access to the campus. It is a stop for the Panther Shuttle, MET Transit and Safe Ride buses. Aerial Services, Inc. Redevelopment Investor Award Just short of one year after the 2008 recordbreaking floodwaters significantly damaged its Center Street location, Aerial Services, a provider of geospacial services, broke ground at Enterprise and Chancellor Drive. They had been located on Center Street since 1976. Community Main Street Tourism, Recreation & Entertainment Award The National Trust named Cedar Falls one of the 2010 Dozen Distinctive Destinations for Historic Preservation. The city’s Downtown District was a significant factor in Cedar Falls’ selection. Broad efforts have helped Cedar Falls receive this recognition, as well as the coveted Great American Main Street Award and state designaion “Arts and Cultural District”.
Holmes Junior High School Renovation Project 2010 Education Partner Award Construction began on this project in April of 2009. The renovation consists of a new 23,783 square feet building. The total budget for this project is $11,788,351 and funded with local option sales tax. BioLife Plasma Services New Investor Award BioLife Plasma Services is an industry leader in the collection of high quality plasma that is processed into life-saving plasma-based therapies. It is a part of the Baxter Healthcare Corporation. The new Cedar Falls BioLife facility represents a local investment in excess of $4.0 million. David Deaver Representative Citizen of the Year Award Dave Deaver has held many leadership roles. His broad range of contributions touch upon every facet of the community. His service extends to the entire Cedar Valley region. Dave is President of the First National Bank of Cedar Falls. He and his wife, Jan, have two grown daughters.
It’s In Our Hands Every decade since 1790, the U.S. Census Bureau has conducted a constitutionally mandated census to count the number of people living in the United States. Census information affects the number of seats Iowa occupies in the U.S. House of Representatives. It’s easy to see what an accurate count of residents can do for our community. The information the census collects
helps to determine how more than $400 billion dollars of taxpayer money is spent each year. By mid March, every household received the Census questionnaire. By law, the Census Bureau cannot share an individual’s census questionnaire responses with anyone, including other federal agencies or law enforcement entities. If you haven’t completed your
Census questionnaire, please take a few minutes to answer the questions and return the form back to the Census Bureau. It’s quick. It’s easy. It’s confidential. A complete and accurate count is in our hands.
Island Park Beach House You’re Invited to a Birthday Party . . . Wednesday, June 23rd from 6 to 8 pm The Cedar Falls Community Theatre is celebrating the 100th year anniversary of the Oster Regent Theatre building with a birthday bash on Wednesday, June 23rd from 6 to 8 pm. Citizens are invited to join the free celebration taking place at First and Main Streets. Activities will include music, dancing, silent movies, street entertainment, popcorn, lemonade, cake and the town singing “Happy Birthday to You” to the building which has given us a “Century of Showtime,” this season’s theme. Come help give a centennial salute to this Main Street treasure celebrating the date of its opening in 1910.
Since 1920, the Island Park Beach House has become woven into the fabric of the Cedar Valley. Fundraisers are finding an overwhelming consensus - people want the beach house. Cedar Falls’ most famous artist, Gary Kelley, created an image of this iconic building, in part because of his own personal experiences at the Island Park Beach House, and also to help raise the needed funds, knowing that no tax dollars would be available (or be sought) for the new structure. A dozen local bands have donated their time and talents to help achieve the same goal. Over $50,000 has been donated in the early stages of the fund drive, a testament to the public’s desire to once again have that special place along the river to enjoy family and friends. “In kind” services, those services that people in the trades offer to help a project are also anticipated, removing them from the total cost of the project. An additional grant on flood mitigation is possible from Homeland Security and is being pursued. Many local foundations have acknowledged this project as one that qualifies for grant application from their organizations. Join the Facebook page “Island Park Beach House” or visit the Web site www.islandparkbeachhouse.org where you may make a secure online donation and receive Gary Kelley’s “Island Park Beach House” image.
Cedar Falls Bicycle Advisory Committee Established With Cedar Falls City Council’s recent decision to utilize the Cedar Falls Bike Plan as a guide in future transportation planning, Mayor Jon Crews appointed a Bicycle Advisory Committee to assist in implementing a Bike Plan. Members of the committee are Brent Johnson, Jon Taiber, Bob Morgan, Kathy Green, Mare Schmidt, Kate Stainbrook, and Mike McCallum. The Advisory Committee will participate with City staff in city planning and design process for bicycles on streets. The Cedar Falls Bike Plan is the culmination of more than two years of work by the Cedar Falls Bike Task Force, City and regional planning staff, consultants, and citizens. Along with the establishment of a designated bikeway network, Bike Plan goals relate to engineering, enforcement, encouragement, education, and evaluation, with safety of all citizens as a priority. The needs and experiences of all road users will be taken into consideration for all street projects. Cedar Falls has been designated a Bicycle Friendly Community, Bronze level, 2009, by the American League of Bicyclists. Bicycle Advisory Committee will work toward the Platinum level designation. Being Prepared – NOW!
With the change of seasons comes a different set of weather concerns. Spring and summer weather brings with it the potential for severe storms, flooding and tornados. The June 2008 flooding was due to significant rain throughout the watershed area during the Spring of 2008. The effect, if any, of this year’s snowfall on the river level is unknown; however, it is always a good idea to review family emergency preparedness plans, including a list of items needed in the event that evacuation becomes necessary. Families should practice Exit Drills In The Home (EDITH) in case of fires. Now we are asking that families practice “exit drills in the home” for flooding. The following are some tips to help you prepare for this type of emergency:
CodeRED (Reverse 911): CodeRED allows the City to telephone all or targeted areas of the City in case of an emergency. Citizens may sign up for CodeRED by clicking on the link on the www.cedarfalls.com website. Evacuation Route: Everyone in your home should know your emergency plan. A specific route to leave the flood prone area is vital for safety. A brochure to help is available at www.cedarfalls.com/flood. Contact Person: Designate an emergency contact person. Choose someone who lives a good distance from you or even an out of state relative. Ensure that all family members know the name, address and phone number of your contact. Phone Numbers: Place emergency numbers next to all home phones. Hazardous Items: Secure or protect any hazardous items in your home now rather than when the flood is imminent. Any interior fuel oil or exterior propane fuel tank should be properly secured to prevent them
from floating away and possibly damaging home or property. Electricity Issues: Sump pumps in your home should have battery backup power. Electrical outlets and breaker panels should be placed at least 12 inches above potential floodwaters. A licensed electrician should raise these devices if necessary. Back Flow Prevention Systems: Water and sewer lines in your home should have back flow prevention systems installed. A licensed professional can install valves. Flood insurance: Flood insurance is one way of protecting your home. Remember, most flood insurance policies require at least 30-days before the policy is in effect. Prepare an Emergency Evacuation Kit: (Store in an easy-to-carry container, ie. backpack, duffle bag or plastic bin.) n Medicines n First Aid Kit n Important Documents • Mortgage • Insurance • Birth Certificates • Social Security Cards • Wills • Tax Information • Bank Information • List of family physicians • List of important family information, such as style and serial number of medical devices like pacemakers • Video/picture inventory of household items n Cash / Checkbook n Clothing - at least 1 change of clothes & sturdy shoes per person n A blanket or sleeping bag per person n Water - 1 gallon/ day/ person (Keep a 3-day supply on hand.)
n Water purification kit or bleach n Food - Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits and vegetables; juices; soup; baby food; special diets, etc. n Manual can opener and utility knife n Irreplaceable Items n Supplies and Special Items n Extra set of eyeglasses/contacts n Extra house and car keys n Battery radio and batteries n Flashlight and extra batteries n Mess kits, disposable cups, plates, and utensils n Anti-bacterial hand wipes/gel n Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, etc. n Toilet paper, towelettes n Pet food, water and feeding bowls, leash, bedding n Vaccination records Special issues for people with disabilities: n Always wear a medical alert bracelet or necklace. n Build a support network to help with any type of emergency. Know where emergency supplies are kept; make a key available, list how to operate home equipment, list medications, dosages, and allergies. Keep spare batteries for powered medical equipment. List manufacturer and serial numbers of any medical equipment. Always have medical insurance cards and/ or Medicare information along with a list of your doctors and contact addresses and phone numbers. If you are a dialysis patient, locate an alternative dialysis clinic. For more information, please contact the Cedar Falls Police at 273-8612, Cedar Falls Fire Dept. at 273-8622, or the Black Hawk County Emergency Management Agency at 319-291-4373.

Radar Trailer Requests Concerned about speeding vehicles in your neighborhood? Let us help. The Cedar Falls Police Department purchased a new radar trailer in 2009 for this purpose. The unit not only displays the vehicle’s speed, it has a red and blue flashing visual to alert violators. The unit also collects valuable information that the Police Department can use to assess traffic in your neighborhood. If you would like to have the radar in your neighborhood, call the Cedar Falls Police Department at (319) 2738612 or visit the “Citizen Support Center” link on the Cedar Falls website at www. cedarfalls.com. Click on the Speed Trailer Request.
Panther Pickup The University of Northern Iowa will hold its second-annual Panther Pick Up -- a project to help the environment while benefiting the community -- during the final week of April and the first week of May. Many UNI students are moving out of residence halls and apartments at that time. Rather than throwing usable items away, students can donate to charitable organizations in the Cedar Valley. During Panther Pick Up, St. Vincent de Paul and The Salvation Army park trucks at convenient locations around campus and College Street. They accept clothing, dishes, furniture, carpet and household items. Metal items not accepted can be recycled on campus. No appliances or electronics of any type will be accepted. From May 3-7 during regular business hours, University Book and Supply will collect books to help educate students in other countries. Gently used books and textbooks will be donated to Books for Africa and Bridge to Asia when patrons specify their books are donations to Panther Pick Up. Visit www.uni.edu/pantherpickup for details.

The July 2009 windstorm devastated a large number of trees in Cedar Falls, especially the street trees around the College Hill neighborhood area. The City of Cedar Falls removed approximately 300 damaged and unsafe street trees citywide, with 80 - 90 from the College Hill neighborhood. Two UNI students, Paige Nagle and Megan Halsch from the Community Planning Workshop are working with Jill Lankford, UNI visiting Scholar in Health, Physical Education & Leisure Services, to assist in replacing street trees in the College Hill area. The Community Planning Workshop has been meeting with the Cedar Falls Park Division and the Cedar Falls Utilities Cedar Falls TREES Committee to develop a College Hill Neighborhood Urban Street Tree Plan. The College Hill Neighborhood Urban Street Tree Plan details the trees lost and removed. The plan also maps the areas that need to be replanted. This spring many groups including UNI students, NU high boys and girls soccer teams, MPLS students, residents, and business owners will be replanting trees in the College Hill Neighborhood. Homeowners who lost street trees can contact the Park Division at 273-8624 or email at jamie.kramer@cedarfalls.com.

“It’s All Relative” is Restored The bright blue sculpture near the Oster Regent Theater was created by local artist, Jerry Cowger. It was purchased for the Public Art Collection by Community Main Street with a grant from the Ronald E. and Doris Juhl family “In celebration of the quality of life in Cedar Falls.” The Midwestern freeze-melt cycle caused surface problems and “It’s All Relative” was removed for about a month during restoration.

“Whisk is a dynamic cyclone touching down at the Hearst Center. With a form similar to swirling winds and lightning bolts, Whisk imparts action and movement to the front entrance. The words of “Spring Fever,” a poem by James Hearst about remembrance and rebirth, cut through and spiral around the sculpture creating an interplay of light and shadow similar to sunlight passing through a leafy tree. Visitors will need to circle around and around to read the entire poem, in essence twisting themselves around art.” - Marc Moulton, Spring 2000
