A warm welcome Adult Education - Qualifications, Re-training Opportunities, Leisure & Craft Workshops all in the heart of Brighton City College Brighton and Hove is the largest provider of Adult Education in Brighton. Each year over 7,000 Adults enrol on courses with us. In recent years, the current economic climate has seen an increase in students looking to study with us on a full or part-time basis to gain new skills and qualifications or to re-train for new career opportunities. I’m immensely proud of the sheer range and quality of the courses, training programmes and adult apprenticeships that the College is able to offer those looking to build on their skills often to improve their employability, job prospects or career progression. Adult Education is not just about career prospects and job hunting, for many of us it’s about trying something new; in our leisure time, for our own enjoyment and personal development. The College also runs hundreds of leisure classes and creative skills workshops from Pottery to Massage, Languages to Cookery...running on weekdays, evenings and Saturdays. Our high-achieving tutors and support staff are passionate about the courses that they deliver in first class facilities and in a friendly, welcoming environment. Simply find your course on www.ccb.ac.uk and click the ‘enrol & pay online’ button and you will be directed to our secure online payments system. Register your details on the system, pay using our secure server and your space will be reserved on the course. Please note that this facility is only available if you are paying the full fee in one go.

fees and concessions information The course fees marked with an asterisk (*) in this brochure are fully or partly funded by the government. The fee shown is for those in Category 3. For Category 1 and Category 2 fees, please view your course on our website www.ccb.ac.uk. In addition to this already reduced price, there are various concessions available to you depending on your circumstances. Fee Categories Explained The total cost of your course will depend on the following categories: Category 1: If you are aged between 19-23 years* and are studying at the level of your chosen course for the first time. This applies to Level 1, 2 and 3 courses. *If it is your first Level 3, the upper age limit is 24. Category 2: If you are in receipt of a ‘work- related’ benefit such as Job Seekers Allowance, or that you can self-certify (sign a form) that you are actively seeking work. Category 3: If you do not sit within Categories 1 or 2, the fee shown will be the cost that you will need to pay for your course. What does the total course fee include? The costs that you see against each course in this booklet are all the total costs that you will need to pay for the course. This total cost includes tuition fees and the registration, exams and resource fees.

What if my Employer is paying for the course? If your employer is paying for your course, they will need to complete a Contract of Sponsorship form, you can find a copy in the centre pages of this brochure. Contracts should be returned to the Finance Department before you enrol, the address is: Finance Department Room PT220 City College Brighton and Hove Pelham Street Brighton BN1 4FA If we have received your Contract of Sponsorship, you will not be required to pay any fees when you enrol. Part Payment Agreement As long as your fees are greater than £90 you will be able to enter a part payment agreement with the College. You will need to pay at least 25% of your fees when you enrol and will be asked to enter into a direct debit agreement for the remainder of your fees payable in 2 further installments. You will also need to sign an agreement that you will pay all of the course fees, even if you withdraw from the course. If you wish to take advantage of the part payment plan you will have to enrol in person, please remember to bring your bank details for the direct debit with you when you come in to enrol.

Apprenticeships for adults Skill shortages mean recruiting a skilled workforce is harder than ever. Thousands of businesses in Sussex have recognised the value of growing their own talent; they have recruited Apprentices on programmes of structured learning and work experience - in over 50 different vocational areas. Apprenticeships are not just for under 19 year olds. At City College we are working with employers to provide training for adults who are already employed and looking to upskill and train through the apprenticeship programme. Employees receive high quality training, that is practically based, and use evidence gathered in the workplace to demonstrate that they have fulfilled the requirements of their chosen course. It’s a fantastic way for adults to gain training and qualifications as it can be done alongside their working commitments and is very relevant for their chosen career. Below are some frequently asked questions about Apprenticeships: What is an Apprenticeship all about? Apprenticeships for adults are really just another way of saying you are gaining professional development or training. The big difference between this route and a traditional college course is that an assessor will work with you and your employer to ensure that you have demonstrated the core competencies of your course. Apprenticeships offer a fantastic range of training in almost every business sector. City College Brighton and Hove will help you decide which Apprenticeship is best for your career. How does it work? Apprenticeships focus on the whole working spectrum, not just individual skills. You would learn through a combination of ’on and off the job’ education and training. On the job, you would be working alongside your colleagues in the workplace and the rest you learn from experienced and professional Assessors employed by City College Brighton and Hove.

City Business Skills City Business Skills works with employers and employees across a whole range of industry disciplines, including corporate business, retail, tourism and construction to offer the following: Apprenticeships - City College offers a wide range of apprenticeships across lots of different industries. We’ll handle the paperwork and assessments (and much more) leaving you to get on with what you do best. FREE Skills Analyses - A no obligation visit from one of our skills advisers, who can give you advise on your training and skill gaps. Impartial Business Advice - Our skills advisers have years of experience in their respective industries and can offer you no obligation business advice to help you succeed. student Services Course Information and Advice The Student Advisor team can provide you with information and advice about the full range of College courses along with information about financial support and the various support services available at the City College. Financial Support Financial Support from the College may be available to help you with the cost of fees, equipment or child care, if you are studying a government funded course. You do not have to be on benefits to get financial help; many successful applicants are working but we try to support those students in most need. The funds we have are limited and do run out, so you should apply as early as you can. The deadline for applying for College funds is 4pm Friday 17th August 2012. Guidelines and application forms for all College funds are available from the Student Centre or on line via the Financial Support section on www.ccb.ac.uk. We have made the system for applying as simple as possible, but it does involve filling in forms, providing evidence and telling us in detail about your financial situation. The funds are limited and are offered at the discretion of the College. Please note that not all courses are eligible for support. If you are planning to study a full cost course then you will not receive any discounts, fee waivers or financial support. Qualification Guide Qualification Level

Level 4 and higher

Description We have a wide range of Foundation Degrees and professional qualifications at Level 4 and above. Our Foundation Degrees are all validated by the University of Brighton. Foundation Degrees are two-year full-time or three year part-time courses that give you the skills to move straight into a job or top-up to an Honours Degree with an additional year of study. There are also professionally recognised qualifications like AAT (Accountancy) and the PGCE/Cert Ed (FE Teaching and Training) that are a requirement to work in the related industry.

Level 3

This includes one year vocational Certificates and Diplomas and two year BTEC National Diploma qualifications. GCE A-levels are also Level 3 and a BTEC National Diploma is equivalent to 3 A-levels and attracts the same UCAS points for entry to higher education. This is also the level of the Advanced Apprenticeship. You can enter directly onto a Level 3 course if you have at least 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, a good grade at First Diploma level or a Level 2 vocational qualification.

Level 2

In vocational areas, Level 2 qualifications are the requirement for entering employment at Technician level or working towards an Apprenticeship at this level. A BTEC First Diploma is a Level 2 qualification and equivalent to four GCSEs at Grade C or above.

Level 1

In vocational areas, a Level 1 qualification provides you with the basic skills in your chosen craft or trade to enable you to progress to the next level. A BTEC or other recognised vocational Level 1 qualifications provide a Foundation for further progression for learners without a formal or traditional educational background.

Entry Qualification Types

Entry qualifications are for learners who are starting out on their journey to gain recognised qualifications. Description

Access to HE

The Access to Higher Education qualification is the recognised route for anyone aged 19 or over who wishes to progress to University. It is a highly successful programme that enables adults with little or no formal education at this level to access higher education. The college has progression agreements with both the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex.

BTEC Nationals

BTEC National Diplomas are a nationally recognised qualification equivalent to 3 A-levels that combine underpinning knowledge and practical skills application within specific vocational and professional employment sectors.

Work related qualifications

This is a range of Certificates and Diplomas such as City and Guilds designed to develop and apply the skills and knowledge required to work in a particular job sector such as Electrical and Plumbing or Food and Catering. They are industry recognised qualifications.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are available at Levels 2, 3 and more recently Level 4. You need to be in employment as part of your course but we can help you find an employer if you are interested in gaining a qualification in the workplace. Some Apprenticeships require attendance at college a day a week or on block release.

Life Skills Programme Life Skills Programme

We have two areas within our Life Skills department, both offering supported courses designed for learners to gain skills to progress with life after college. This may be with independent or supported employment skills or with independent or supported living skills.

Entry Level Skills for Independence & Work This full-time course suits young adults with MLD/SpLD who want to develop independent living skills for home and for work. Learners who apply for this course will probably live in supported housing or at home and will have attended a special school. The course focuses on developing skills to increase understanding and build confidence. All learners study English, Maths and ICT Functional Skills as part of the course. Learners are expected to be able to cope independently within the main college environment after an initial transition phase. • • • • •

Classes are small and supported by an LSA Opportunities for Enterprise Projects Supported break times Exciting timetable with variety of subjects Progression possible from E2 to E3

ALDD Part-time Courses These courses suit learners with SLD / MLD / SpLD who want to come to college to learn a new skill, for enjoyment or to gain skills for transition to supported living or work. Some courses have a NOCN qualification attached to them so learners will be assessed as to suitability for the course. Other courses are for social interaction and fun as well as learning new skills. Each separate course runs for 2 hours a week over a 30 week year. Learners can choose more than 1 course to study each year. Classes are small and supported by an LSA. Learners are welcome to be supported by their own key workers for personal care and transition needs.
