Pattern Cutting

Beginners and Improvers

A

E

Introduction

E

Develop your sewing skills and learn how to make your own clothes using a commercial pattern. Each term you will work towards making a new garment, starting with a skirt or pyjama trousers for complete beginners. In the first session you will be introduced to the college sewing machines and shown how to thread up and sew a variety of basic and more decorative seams. The course will take you through the whole process of making a garment, including selecting and cutting the right size of pattern, adapting patterns to fit your shape, cutting out fabrics, sewing darts, pleats and seams, inserting zips, attaching sleeves, collars, cuffs and stitching hems. Each session will allow you time to learn and practise a new technique and then try this out on your garment. Sewing machines and overlockers are available to use although you may find it useful to have your own sewing machine at home to continue making your garment and practise your techniques.

This dynamic course is suitable for those who have an interest in making garments and who want to draft their own patterns from their own designs. Taught by our specialist tutor, you will be shown how to draft a basic block pattern and how this can be adapted to your own design. You will produce a sample of your garment (toile), learn how to fit, adjust and create the finished piece. There will be some input on garment construction but the main emphasis will be pattern cutting. It is a fast moving, structured course which does require some additional work at home.

history The Golden Summer:

The Novel as Social History 4:

Edwardians 1890-1910

E

We study the social and cultural history of the Edwardian period, starting in the 1890s when Queen Victoria had withdrawn from public life, and Edward and Alexandra were very much in evidence and part of the fashionable set. This was the short golden age before war was to change the idyll of elegant life for the wealthy. The huge contrast of great wealth and abject poverty was very much in evidence. A golden age for the wealthy but a tarnished one for the poor. The summer season’s giddy whirl for women of fashion was in sharp contrast to poor wives and mothers trying hard to keep a decent home and the family fed. End-of-the-century style in architecture and furnishings was changing from the heavy, Gothic look, to the lighter style of Art Nouveau. We also look at the arts, literature, fashion, travel, leisure, holidays and early cinema as well as domestic and working life for all classes in town and country. Illustrated with slides, books, extracts from period texts, prints, paintings and video clips. Code

Unique course comprising literature, social and cultural history and book club. Within the pages of the novel we discover more than just a story. We study the social and cultural history of the novel and by exploring the background information we are absorbing unwittingly which is not the main theme, but which gives us a deeper and clearer understanding of period and general minutiae of everyday life. Within every piece of fiction is a wealth of information on culture and social life which can lead us into a deeper understanding of a subject, time or place, period in history, genre, working conditions, habits, style or social trend that we might pursue further, or deepen our knowledge and intensify our interest. This term, we look at novels from the 1940s and 1950s including ‘Miss Ranksill Comes Home’ by Barbara Euphan Todd (1946), ‘Of Love and Hunger’ by Julian Maclaren Ross, (1947), ‘The Slaves of Solitude’ by Patrick Hamilton (1947) and ‘The Fancy’ by Monica Dickens (1953). A reading list is available from the tutor and you will be expected to participate in group discussion. Classes are fortnightly Saturdays (5 classes over 10 weeks). Code

Early Twentieth Century Britain:

The Novel as Social History 5: 1950s and 1960s

A Changing Society 1900-1914

E

The end of Queen Victoria’s reign, 1901 was followed by the short Edwardian period – an era which included old-age pensions and the changing role of women, including the first female MP and the suffragettes and their struggles for equality and the vote. We study the years leading up to the “black pit of war” (J.B. Priestley), when life would be changed forever, by looking at social and cultural history which includes literature, art, architecture, domestic, working and family life; leisure pursuits, travel, holidays, shopping, food and dining, gardening, fashion and the great impact of cinema and film, and how life in the home was being slowly transformed by new technology. But there was still the huge class divide of wealth and poverty -from the lavish lifestyle of the upper classes with servants to wait on them, down to the abject poverty of the lowliest of the working class. Illustrated with slides, books, extracts from period texts, prints, paintings and film clips. Code

Keep the Homefires Burning: Homefront in Wartime 1914-1918

We study domestic, working and social life on the homefront during World War One and the impact it had during this period and its life-changing effects post-war.

ingenuity and inventiveness. Nurses writing home from overseas or who were stationed in Britain give us a touching insight into the lives of men and women during this period.

When men went to war women went to work and took on what had been seen as hard and heavy work in factories, on farms, driving buses, even working as cinema projectionists. When the men returned from war the women returned to the home – which they had not really left. Their stories are fascinating. Women, such as Ruby, the welder, were not allowed to carry on with jobs for which they were highly trained. And, what about life on the home-front? Women displayed their

English for speakers of other languages (Esol) These courses are suitable for people who live or are settling in the UK. You will study the individual skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, at the same time as learning about British life and culture. Our courses are recognised by the Home Office for citizenship purposes.

We have classes for beginners up to advanced level, with many courses having a final Edexcel ESOL exam in speaking and listening, reading or writing. The courses and prices listed in the following tables are aimed at people who live permanently in the UK.

This will depend on the spaces available, your level and the times of the course.

The ESOL Read/Write course supports students who struggle with reading and writing, to prepare them for mainstream ESOL courses. You do not need to complete an application form for these courses. You must attend one of our assessment sessions to make sure you are in the right level class. Attending an assessment session does not guarantee you will have a place on a course.

Entry requirements: Proof of residence in the UK needed (e.g. bank or utility bill statement). You need to come to a placement testing session.

You must be able to attend all classes and complete any homework and assessments.

For application enquiries for all ESOL courses, please contact the curriculum area on 01273 667788 ext. 434 or email ESOL@ccb.ac.uk

Attendance and Punctuality We understand that adults’ lives are busy and from time to time circumstances prevent you from attending your course. Some courses, however, will have a minimum attendance requirement, particularly if they lead to a qualification. This will be explained to you at the start of your course. You will be contacted if your attendance becomes a concern and given help wherever possible to catch up with any missed work. Please respect your fellow course members and your tutor by making every effort to get to classes in good time for the start of lessons.

Book Early Don’t wait until the last minute to enrol. Your course may already be full or might have been cancelled owing to low enrolment.

Health Related Courses You attend all courses at your own risk. If you are on a Sports, Keep Fit, Yoga or Massage course you must not only satisfy yourself that you are medically suitable (ie. consult your GP prior to enrolment) but must also notify the Course Tutor of any relevant medical condition you may have.
